[Music] the Nintendo switch has been around for over two years now so there's already a huge dedicated fan base but thanks to the launch of the switch light there's a new wave of Nintendo fans out there and you may be one of those who are struggling to choose from the switches stupendous selection of games so whether you're already a proud owner of the switch and just want to make sure you're rockin the best of the best in your console or you're planning on getting a shiny new switch light under your tree this Christmas and want to hit the ground running with some of the best games on the system here in no particular order are our picks for the 20 best games on the Nintendo switch [Music] the first time I experienced breath of the wild was when I got drunk at university ate two mixed meat kebabs with garlic mayonnaise in one night and then forgot to brush my teeth before I went to bed thankfully the first game on this list is nowhere near as disgusting as my morning breath was back then so say hello to the Legend of Zelda breath of the wild a game that's so good it's on pretty much every best of switch list ever made [Music] now breath of the wild is a game about nature and to make a game about nature that's this good Zelda's creators had to change the way they created the precision tooling of every part of the environment had to be hidden away and the intricate dungeons that clip together across the landscape in other Zelda games were replaced with massive vistas that at first appear thrillingly empty do not be fooled by that emptiness though breath of the wild is as obsessively designed and crafted as any Zelda game before it but everything in this huge seemingly untamable game is put in place to make you feel lost and small and at the mercy of the elements pick a direction and just go exploring an adventure of genuine beauty and revelation awaits my daughter [Music] [Music] you've got to tip your hat to Nintendo while most companies trot out the same old formula with minor tweaks here and there for each and every one of their sequels the begin is constantly trying to reinvent the way we play with its most iconic of characters so step forward copy the magical talking hat being that allows Mario to possess and control everything from t-rex's to slabs of meat Odyssey is a wonderful purposely incoherent Mario game in which each world has its own costumes and gimmicks but also its own defining aesthetic after the rolling majesty of breadth of the wilds Hyrule it's a little bit like diving into a jumble sale but like all jumble sales there are brilliant things to discover strange worlds that glitter with unusual textures and that seem to be driven by alien rules and at the heart of it all is that brilliant sense of wait momentum and pace that makes Mario the platformer that nobody else can touch oh and in this game you also get to see Mario's nipples so it's a must buy just for that if I'm being perfectly honest [Music] [Applause] [Music] Christmas isn't Christmas in my house unless someone ends up throwing mince pies at the TV because they think they've been unfairly thrashed in an ale fueled Mario Kart multiplayer sesh of course countless others have taken on the Mario Kart formula since its inception in 1992 not least of which is Nintendo itself delivering various mutations variations and iterations over the years it wasn't until mario kart 8 however the anything matched the brilliance of the snares original with the work of stunning imagination and impeccable craft then with the release of Mario Kart 8 deluxe on switch a few years after Nintendo delivered what's in arguably the best game in the series to date bundling together all of the DLC that came to the Wii version post release and most importantly it also added a brilliant battle mode that completed the package Mario Kart 8 deluxe is thrillingly close to perfection and it's well worth owning despite the potential hazards of any airborne Christmas snacks that might hurt all your way [Music] whether you fancy yourself as a kid now or a squid now if you're looking for one of the best multiplayer games on the switch look no further than splatoon - because it is incredible get it splatoon - is a glorious team-based shooter where you use your ink guns to spread delicious globs of color about a map diving into pools of the stuff to move around that little bit faster in squid form or simply shooting it to splat the opposition that cool mechanic is spread beautifully across a variety of multiplayer modes and a fairly generous single-player campaign where you work your way through a series of smartly designed self-contained levels if you've played the original game there won't be too many new surprises here although returning splatoon players can also delight in a handful of quality of life improvements and an all-new League battle mode in which you can fight alongside friends but if this is your first time with splatoon you are in for a serious treat back in the days of the Nintendo and Sega console wars there were countless playground squabbled surrounding who would win in a fight between Mario and Sonic just thinking about all those shattered childhood friendships makes me rather sad especially seeing as nowadays there's no need to guess which mascot is the hardest you can just put your arguments to the test in Super Smash Brothers ultimate now it doesn't even matter if you like fighting games or not Smash Brothers is for anyone who's ever fallen for video games full stop it's a mad impossibly expansive and expertly engineered celebration not just of Nintendo's rich past but that of the entire medium the cast is outrageously vast and takes in all comers from Mario to Metal Gear the options are plentiful and the soundtrack is just to die for oh and the game underneath all that is brilliant - a willfully chaotic dust-up that's best enjoyed shoulder-to-shoulder with friends you'll find a little of all video games here in Smash Brothers ultimate a breathless celebration of the medium in all its mad incoherent and joyous glory oh and just in case you're wondering Mario would blatantly win in a fight against Sonic [Music] how's this for a pitch the mariokart team does for fighting games what it once did for driving games in a ludicrously colorful energetic and original switch exclusive sounds a bit far-fetched if I'm being honest with you but arms delivered so well on that promise that people in the Eurogamer office still crowd around the TV every lunchtime in order to play it and also quite a lot of the time when it's not lunch either which may explain all of our missed deadlines please don't tell our boss but only wait this is a fighter that's instantly accessible offers boundless depth and does all this with one hell of a spring in its step oh and it springs in its arms too as your fighters reach into the screen in an enjoyable pliable brand of pugilism the chances of a sequel seems slim because despite its brilliance arms never really found the audience that it deserves so pick this one up as soon as you can and make the most of a game that's truly one-of-a-kind [Applause] Battle Royale Tetris sounds like a joke right I mean with every other game jumping on the battle royale bandwagon it almost should be but it turns out it's not instead this spin on this generations most imitated gameplay genre is the basis for one of the most energizing console exclusives in years it's Tetris a game you've been playing forever but in Tetris 99 you're up against an entire game show board of rivals there's two kinds of beauty here the beauty of a game you know innately being twisted into a new form and then the buried beauty of the hidden rules and synergies that will see you racing up the leaderboard Tetris isn't just the eternal game it's an eternally surprising one and with Tetris 99 on your switch you are definitely on to a winner winner tetromino dinner [Music] poor old Donkey Kong despite having helped make Nintendo a key player in the world of video games in the 1981 arcade title barring his own name he's always been cast in mario shadow in fact I've often found it hard to fathom exactly by his character doesn't have quite the same appeal he's a guru nor in a necktie for heaven's sake but still maybe that set to change because this switch port of Donkey Kong tropical freeze has emerged over time as something of a modern classic here's a 2d platformer with muscle Halfdan most importantly imagination piling on set piece after set piece in a gloriously creative spin on one of gaming's most well-worn mediums it's all helped along with an impeccable score making for one of the all-time great platformers regardless of platform so quit monkeying around and get this one on your Christmas wish list right now [Music] excuse the well-worn cliche but Fire Emblem three houses really is a game of two halves on the one hand it's almost a dating sim rich with romance options and side stories to explore and on the other it's a tightly engineered staggeringly deep turn-based tactical game serving up a smart evolution of the formula that intelligent systems has been developing for nearly 30 years now there's a huge amount of game here dauntingly so at times with the first half of the campaign based within the walls of the monastery as you teach your pupils before hostilities break out in the latter half as the story skips forwards and you engage in all-out war with rival houses three houses then is a deeply emotional tactical game one in which you end up invested in each unit in that way it's true to what's always made Fire Emblem so special it's just that three houses expresses itself on a different scale and a different style so yes Fire Emblem three houses may be a game of two halves but they come together to make one incredible whole [Music] Mario maker 2 has a lot of stuff that other content creation games don't it has a pidgin that helps you through the tutorials it has an undo button that is also a dog and a clean slight button that is a rocket but the cool thing it has is that pretty much everyone who knows about games knows about Mario so it's incredibly easy to understand its world from the off you know how things will work in Mario maker too because you know what Mario can do you know how the creatures and objects around him will behave because his past adventures have been enjoyed by almost everyone that's old enough to pick up a controller so when it comes to making brilliant levels in Mario maker 2 for yourself the gentlest of nudges is all you'll need Mario maker 2 is a wonderfully powerful tool you can reskin levels change their themes build landscapes and add baddies and pickups all in a match for prods if you're using the touchscreen or with just a little shunting around of the face buttons if you're docked and using the controls but this isn't just a creation tool of course there's also a story mode in Mario maker 2 which is a wonderfully fluffy collection of over 100 scattershot challenges that were also built using the in-game level editor so don't worry if you Mario make a mess of your first few levels because with the single-player campaign and an almost infinite amount of user-generated levels to download you'll never be short of inspiration [Music] Luminas started life on the PSP in 2004 and despite the transition from sony to nintendo remastered feels like a homecoming luminaires is the only puzzler to truly challenge Petrus in terms of universality or brilliance except for maybe drop 7 and it's built for a screen like this bright and luxuriously wide and yet held somehow in your hands the levels have never looked better and the use of vibration on the switch is sublime mostly though its luminaires back where it belongs inches from your eyebrows the timeline racing through again and again and leaving the glinting landscape behind it transformed once again all these years later luminaires is as potent a puzzler as it's ever been and on the switch remastered is close to perfection jammer discover the best frisbee game ever made I had a bad case into the wind jammers once but I managed to sort that out pretty quickly thanks to a munch on some rainy deaf Latinas on the switch however is something you won't want to get rid of in a hurry because this port of the 90s Neo Geo classic is arcade perfection serving up a delicious alchemy of Street Fighter and pong it's one of the very best local multiplayer games available which makes it an absolute essential for the switch never again will you hope that the pub you're heading off to has a well-stocked neogeo cabinet propping up the corner because thanks to the marvels of modern technology you can challenge someone to a game of Windjammers wherever you may be give us your money the best game of 1994 Windjammers [Music] the tactics gained concerned with the world's dinky astern version into the breech is a study in economy from the games tiny play areas and short match times to the sparse animation and simple rules that govern a unit everything here is bright and glinting and wonderfully fit for purpose such basic elements lead to rich surprises however and this is one of those games that you can play for days and weeks and months without ever feeling that you ceased to learn his attempt to get you started when you inevitably pick up into the breech don't just think about what a unit can accomplish on a turn but also think about where it ends up once the turn is finished if you've never played into the breech before we honestly envy you because tactical perfection awaits [Music] the next game on this list is very buggy indeed but not in a bad way you say polo Knight is an adventure game set in a deep dark labyrinth that's crammed full of deceptively cute insects and bizarre beetle like NPCs you play as a nameless knight who must battle his way through the ruins of the hallow nest learning new skills and battling countless beasties as you go with a bare-bones story and hardly any hand-holding at the start holo Knight can feel a bit daunting at first but once you get into the flow of it all you'll quickly become obsessed with exploring every inch of the game in order to uncover secrets and unravel the mysteries and law of the world don't let the cute character designs fool you though there's over 20 hours of gameplay here and after a gentle start difficulty ramps up pretty sharply offering up fiendish boss fights and some delicious bouts of heart-stopping platforming couple all this with a Dark Souls esque way of losing and regaining your loot upon death and simply put you've got one of the finest examples of a Metroidvania style game ever made [Music] starchie Valley is already available on almost every console under the Sun but it's relaxing blend of farming fishing mining and mingling fits perfectly onto the switch and its pixel art graphics look absolutely lovely on the handheld small screen as in the game's most closely observed inspiration Harvest Moon your home town is filled with people to get to know each with their own distinct personalities and tastes a notice board outside the local shop informs you of upcoming birthdays and checking in with the locals builds rapport and intimacy which in turn triggers scenes in which you get to know the townspeople better and just like in Animal Crossing another inspiration for this game the local museum can be filled with collected items of interest no matter what direction you choose to take in this game starchie Valley bends beautifully rewarding your efforts in kind and best of all last year's multiplayer update made it possible for up to 4 players to coexist on a single farm at once where they can work together to share the toils and spoils of hard labor now where did I put those tulip seeds [Music] you won't need eight arms to play octopus traveler nor indeed will you need a path although it's always nice to have a path or to close by I guess just in case of emergencies no all you'll need to enjoy this epic adventure is a Nintendo switch and an appreciation for the 16-bit golden era of JRPGs saying that opt to path traveller is the kind of game that could get overlooked by newer players for being a bit too old-school but to do that would be to overlook its charismatic innovations in battle and the strange detached construction of his narrative with eight more or less standalone tales unfolding in parallel across 60 hours of play you'll pick one character is your main protagonist and then you'll scoop up the other characters one by one as you progress while the traditional JRPG pixel art graphical stylings have been brought up to date with some fancy 2.5 B tilt shift effects the majority of the gameplay will still inspire nostalgia for the classics but with plenty of modern innovations going on under the hood octopus traveler combines the best of the old with the best of the new [Music] the legend of zelda links awakening was one of the best games ever made for the Game Boy and now it's one of the best games on the Nintendo switch thanks to a frankly stunning remake that's dripping with so much nostalgia you might want to play it while stirred in a bucket because honestly it takes ages to scrub nostalgia stains out of a carpet every inch of Link's Awakening has been lovingly recreated for the switch and the new visual style which transforms the flat monochrome sprites from the original into bright tactile and almost model-like characters accurately preserves the originals quirks for those new to the game ko hole in Thailand is a place that's full of secrets awaiting discovery but for those of you thinking of returning you'll be overjoyed by just how fresh it all feels especially with some of the quality of life improvements made to the game's controls there are some framerate issues on the overworld sections which some people seem to be at pains to point out but those issues bothered me not because I was too busy falling in love with the game all over again [Music] Mario rabbit's kingdom battle is the game none of us knew we wanted and when it was first announced I'm pretty sure most people thought they were dreaming believe it or not Mario Rabbids kingdom battle is a turn-based tactical combat game in the style of XCOM which mashes together the magical mushroom kingdom of mario with the absolutely bonkers antics of Ubisoft's Rabbids it has cover and half cover line-of-sight overwatch chance to hit crits and supers skill trees and mathematical budgets of movement and range to be spent across its grid layouts and it has guns lots of them fine they look like chunky nerf guns and shoot energy bolts that cause defeated heroes to get knocked out and enemies to harmlessly dissolve but they are still guns and did I mention that Luigi is a sniper in this game because he is and that's crazy the most unexpected thing about this game though apart from the fact that it actually exists is that it is absolutely excellent so excellent in fact the eye a notorious hater of all things turn-based not only loved it but also played the campaign through to almost 100% completion anyway that's enough rabbiting on from me just give it a go you honestly won't be disappointed especially once you managed to recruit rabid Peach [Music] [Music] that sells is a swaggering macabre role-playing beat em up that's very easy on the eyes and dense with secrets this action platformer with roguelike elements such as perma death randomized rewards and procedurally generated stages takes place on an island overrun by undead creatures and casts you as the worst critter of the lot a parasitic snot ball that survives by reanimating the bodies of beheaded criminals die in your efforts to escape and the parasite squid is back through the islands plumbing to the prison where another corpse is always somehow waiting fortunately once plugged into a torso your snot wall becomes a formidable martial artist and a delight to control able to perform risk 3 combos double jumps blocks of Perry's slither around ledges kick down doors to stun nearby foes or slammer threads mid jump to pulverize anything beneath few role-playing games out there offers such a breadth of options within reoccurring structures and fewer games in general managed to put across such elaborate systems with such swagger dead cells might cast you as a possessed hunk of corpse flesh but give it a go and you'll find out that it's actually incredibly lively [Music] the fate of images never changes and you're going to get tricks mixed up in this no matter how hard you tried that boy will find some way in xenoblade chronicles to humanity is a parasite that lives on the backs of titans sounds a lot like real life just with added titans if I'm being honest anyway the Titans are so tall that the clouds through which they once burst have become the sea on which humans sail and when a Titan dies it's bad news for everyone who lives on its surface because their world collapses in this open world action RPG you take control of Rex who after an unfortunate run-in with the pointy end of a sword at the beginning of the game joins forces with a legendary blade named Pyrrha in an attempt to reach the world tree and save the Titans with around 70 plus hours of adventuring to be had and a huge amount of enemies to fight in it's vastly improved combat system Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is the true sequel to one of the best-loved contemporary JRPGs it's unrestrained in its ambition and the end result is a chaotic kind of brilliance get it in your switch we're going to Elysium [Music] and that's us done obviously these are just our picks and with so many games to choose from on the Nintendo switch you're bound to have spotted something we've missed so please do share your
