the first time Elway returns to Cleveland to duel Bernie Kosar and the brown [Music] NBC Sports presents the national football team today it's the Denver Broncos vs. the Cleveland Browns it's a beautiful day along the shores of Lake Erie is a sellout crowd will watch the matchup today between the AFC West and the AFC Central good afternoon everybody and welcome to Cleveland stadium along with Paul McGuire I'm Joel Myers new today the Browns take on a team that has been a source of frustration for them for a long long time now involved seems almost hard to believe that the Browns have not been able to beat the Broncos since 1974 and it may continue again today the Cleveland Browns they have two offensive linemen on the right side Dan Pike and Cody Rison who are both playing hurt and it's just a matter of time when they go down the Browns have not been able to run the ball so far in three games and they have three new running backs in the backfield a lot of excitement surrounding those new running backs as it's the first career start today for the first round draft choice from Texas Eric McGowen I'm looking forward to seeing Eric Metcalfe you talked to the Denver Broncos about Metcalfe who saw what he did on Monday night on artificial surface they said we'll wait a minute he's going to be playing on grass the moves that he made Monday night he may not be able to make here today on Sunday [Applause] Eric Metcalf is ready to return the opening kickoff and the Browns they're pulling out all the stops today's they are wearing their brown jerseys for the first time at home since 1983 so maybe that's the good luck charm Paul they need I think you're doing it for Jimmy Brown Treadwell gets into it it'll be Metcalfe from the six and we'll underway from Cleveland there goes that cap he's out past the 40 great start for Cleveland was brought down by the placekicker david Treadwell let's look at the offensive unit for the Cleveland Browns that makeshift offensive line Farren banker Rakosi bike and rising up front and of the backfield along with bernie kosar tim manoah's the full-back Metcalf the tailback and the gifted wide receivers slep stirred slaughter reggie Langhorne and the tight end Ozzie Newsome first and ten at the 41 the jump off to met cap they set up the screen he's at the 50 yard Rick Dennison dumping Metcalfe they just want to get to his hands as often as possible now when they go to the shotgun formation but Cleveland Browns with the four wide receivers Metcalfe will leave actually hills go to a slight position he'll stay in there and we'll be joined by Gerald McNeil and manoa will be the only running back with Bernie Kosar the gonna love what they've done with with bed camp right off the bat they let him return to kickoff and then they get him to ball right away he's got it again and he's got a first down with blacks out of the play into the secondary goes for a first down while in henderson bringing down Metcalfe but there is a flag down on the play all hold against Cleveland Joel what's happening is that Metcalfe since they're starting they know he's nervous and what's going to happen in you in ballgame the call you saw him play at the University of Texas where the humidity and the heat is so great I've got to believe he can work in the atmosphere and the conditions here in Cleveland he will play all day third and 15 as Metcalfe goes in motion Kosar to Metcalfe again he can't beat the double-team on the outside he's short the first down by about nine yards he's brought down by Tyrone Braxton we talked to Eric Metcalf father earlier this morning Terry Metcalf and asked him is his son just like the father yes very very much like me wants not only plays and stuff but he wants to gets it here he comes Bishop is moving out to pull out here comes Perry there's the hand on Elway and look at him he goes back at the ball he's rolling for it kicks it away from that way look at this guy you talk about hustle he just runs right by Bishop but I think Bishop was going to pull out and was supposed to have help on that side by Gerald Perry number 60 Robert banks made the fumble spin it around [Applause] Browns raised their record to three meeting the Denver Broncos [Applause] bigger field go to the career of Matt Barr he's in his 11th season out of Penn State that may be the biggest I think one of the things Denver is going to have to do is really go back and take a look at their offense because you know they will do scheme going with wider and Alexander and Bratton Humphrey but Elway was way off today except in that one drive when he gets the team down for the score the Cleveland's defense hung in there again [Applause]
