attempted field goal by Gary Andersen to keep the game scoreless early on following a field goal by Matt Barr here is Kosar off the play fake flipping to the former replacement player Derrick Tinnell the rookie out of UCLA they had the point after blocked by Rod Woodson so it was 9 to nothing here's a first and goal after pass interference call against the Browns Eddie Johnson bats it up in the air and intercepts mark Malone in the closing minute of the first half off lofts the dejected Malone off the mark again indeed the 18th time this season he has been intercepted 9 to 3 in favor of the Browns let's go back out to the stadium Paul McGuire is standing by along with Ahmad Rashad fellows hi Bob you know the thing that impressed me about Cleveland's they came out and played this game I mentioned it there was a lot of intensity in the locker room but they came out they played the first half very businesslike ball well you know Cozart he likes and throw control patterns he throws to Mack he throws the binder he throws to Newsome but well you're gonna see the second half of this game I got a feeling because I put so much pressure on the safety minute all of a sudden he starts dumping this ball to safely start to cheat and when they do that then the wide receivers start going deep one on one and that's where Kosar can kill you well when you talk about Pittsburgh good thing that Malone is in or I talked to ham prediction before the game he said we don't want him to run the ball because we play man-to-man defense and when we cover those receivers our back is to the quarterback so what happens Malone being a very good running quarterback takes off running down for positive yardage to things that would like to see you don't read the press clippings and the things on him alone let him go ahead and throw the football he can't throw the ball he's got great receivers on the outside thing you're talking about it just drives not only defensive backs crazy but it drives linebackers nuts because all of a sudden when they have to play zone and they have to get to his own and they know that before I get there I've got a check first is he going to run or is he gonna throw the ball and it really puts the pressure on the linebackers because now they're caught between the zone are supposed to be in and the one that they're stuck in what about taking advantage of scoring opportunities now Cleveland in the first half took advantage of every scoring opportunity when they got in it within distance to get some points Dave I got the field goal or they got the touchdown on the other hand look at Pittsburgh now they get a chance they get first and 10 on this call can we roll this playing they get first and 10 on a pass interference here now they got a chance to either get three points or get a touchdown and take the leg in this here it is right here Ouija Thompson gets a pass interference call here that bring it down they got first int in the very next play Mark Malone comes back throws an interception blows the scoring opportunity and they're behind at the game at Hampton first of all I think Malone can't throw the football even though they boo him every time he does but the other thing is Cleveland's taking them totally out of their running game now you're down there first and nine you've got two minutes to go in a ball game in the half come on go ahead and run the ball a couple plays that's not gonna hurt they've got big backs they can run the football and if you run the ball once or twice it's gonna take some pressure off those wide receivers and may be able to dump do something roll out the Mallo strong enough to run with the ball I expect the Cleveland Browns here in this second half for the emotional level and their level of play to rise can Pittsburgh rise and stay with them no I don't think Pittsburgh can and I know Bob Costas back in New York and he's very jealous of our hat yes actually I prefer Maude's to yours Paul but I know that's cruel to say there's no question that the guy on the right is the one who's gonna wind up on the cover of gentleman's quarterly but Bob go like a couple of questions do you have an update on his condition after the injured arm and if he is unable to return in the second half as appears to be likely how a lot affect the Browns you know it's really gonna affect advice we haven't found out just exactly the the seriousness of his injury but if he's not able to come back Bob Goins role is not to make tackles but to force everything clog up the middle and force everything to the outside if he's not able to play it's not only gonna have problems here in this game but next week and so on in the playoffs I think one thing that will happen though Bob when you lose a great player like goalie who is an all-pro it just seems to make the other players play that much harder and II's gonna be missed a little bit but not a lot I disagree he'll be missed a lot he's a great player he's going to the Pro Bowl they don't have a pro Bono's Center behind him all right you guys battle it out out there in the booth and free rivers we've got other business to tend to and that pertains in the City of Brotherly Love Buffalo and Philadelphia square off in a game that features two young and exciting quarterbacks Jim Kelly of the Bills and Randall Cunningham of the Eagles footballs will be flying but both teams know they'll be left out on the cold when it comes to postseason play so the bills and the Eagles are part of NBC's menu tomorrow nothing is at stake but New York area bragging rights when the Giants and Jets meet at the Meadowlands the beginning of the year it looked like this game would be so much more than Giants by the way are technically the home team then at 4:00 Eastern Time it's the Broncos going after another AFC West title they play the Chargers at home and they are the champs if they beat San Diego the Chargers can be a wild card but a lot of things have to break right for them dan bounces out mark Herrmann is in at San Diego's quarterback so join us tomorrow at 12:30 Eastern time for NFL live followed by a star-studded lineup of NFL action it's
