[Music] okay you're watching the carolina classic fair friday night rivals presented by rolling law this evening we hit the midway point in the high school football season with clubs from across the tar heels state jockeying for position in their quest for a conference crown from billing stadium it's grimsley visiting northwest guilford and we welcome you to greensboro chris edwards happy to be alongside mark covert and delighted to have you with us mark grimsley won the 4a state championship game last spring but a new club for grimsley now on the flip side for northwest guilford they are loaded with young players could tonight's game be a breakout for one of these clubs yeah i think absolutely chris you're looking at two young squads who are looking to make a statement in the state here tonight we're going to see which one of these teams has shown the most growth up to this point in the season two dynamic quarterbacks on display tonight as we watch our players to watch and we'll start with grimsley and their quarterback alonzo barnett the jmu commit who was the mvp of the state title game last spring yeah and he's a great quarterback a dual threat an ultimate weapon for this offense he's going to have to be great here tonight to come away with a w flipping over to the northwest gilford side tanner below a sophomore who's coming into age so far this season but he is a leader for this offense a guy that this coaching staff trusts we're going to see how much he's grown in his own right tonight all right for more on tonight's game let's say hi to the third member of our team here's hannah brady thanks guys we're here for another friday night matchup at billing stadium as grimsley takes on northwest guilford grimsley the reigning state championship title holders are currently 4-0 and have a current undefeated season hoping to get another win here tonight meanwhile northwest guilford is currently had a great season and they have done really great with their young offense and young defense and they have played tough so far we asked head coach kevin wallace what his thoughts were coming into this game and he said he just tells his players to treat every game like the opponent doesn't matter and he wants to play tough and play hard and he said they're currently three and one but could easily be three and seven if they're not careful chris and mark deferred [Applause] now hey [Music] welcome you back into billing stadium here in greensboro chris edwards mark covert hannah brady roaming the sidelines great to have you with us as we get set for this big conference clash mark an opportunity for these two teams to make a statement not only to the league but to the rest of the triad that maybe they are contenders for a state title of course grimsley won that title last spring but their head coach daryl brown said you know there's no pressure on us because this is a new team that has new goals meanwhile for northwest guilford we mentioned at the top a young club but they've got a lot of really talented skill position players that are young impact players and if you're really looking to reach the summit get to the top that championship level where you have those aspirations year and year out you can look no further than the other sideline tonight chris grimsley has exactly what this northwest guilford squad wants we're going to see now if they've got the metal the toughness and the physicality the wherewithal to finally grow up and reach that summit or at least get another step closer to it tonight well there are a ton of college prospects on the field we'll dive into that as the evening progresses but if you're a fan of collegiate football and sing prospects this is a great game for you just because of the talent that's littered across the field talk about a future showcase here to the to the next level that collegiate level that every one of these players wishes to get to a lot of them have that opportunity and this is another opportunity for them to show out here tonight maybe get their name in front of a few more scouts a few more programs saying wait hold on let me go back and look at that kid and maybe just maybe landing a chance in a shot to capitalize on your your high school career moving on to the college level all right so grimsley won the toss tonight they deferred their option to the second half so we'll see this northwest gilford offense on the field first a chance for their head coach kevin wallace who's also the offensive coordinator to put some points on the board early it's more high school football back and we're delighted to have you with us for our contest tonight colin prego the senior place kicker we're ready to go toe meets leather and off we go from greensboro short kick live ball this is fielded by carter trying to bounce it outside and gets out to the 32-yard line good field position for this offense of northwest guilford as they get set to come out on the field tanner the sophomore quarterback the signal caller the captain the leader of this offense dressed in red and black tonight he's gonna look to lead them on a scoring drive here to start and america's navy forged by the sea two teams that are predicated on throwing the football could be a fun night if you like points low snap they'll start on the ground with payne payne trying to bounce one to the outside and he will pick up nine maybe ten a nice run to start the ball game here and it's a first down there's actually mike gadette who got the call his 21st of the season and that is indeed a crescent ford first down ride to the game in style with a new f-150 from crescent ford of high point and a nice run by cadet that time starting with a little inside zone action that time but bouncing outside saw nothing in the middle bounces it out and finds some room to work with on the edge great job by the offensive line up front to seal everyone inside and a good run to start this game offense it's averaging about 128 yards per game on the ground for northwest guilford cadet had to play action fake the fire over the middle and hanging in there to make the nice catch was bristol carter it'll be another crescent ford first down as carter hauls in his 13th of the season and this is what you're going to see this is a nice what like this offense likes to do the rpo action but it's a little bit different faking the run inside doesn't like it tanner pulls the ball out and fires down the field you see a lot of that here tonight giving your quarterback tanner baloo below or blue yes the option to make that play carter the east carolina baseball committee two-time all-conference selection and a really nice throw for the sophomore tanner ballou who completes his first pass of the night gonna throw again ball is out and that'll be rolled an incomplete pass heavy pressure that time by tamara thompson the three-year starter who got his big paw on it and brings up a second down thompson is a terror on the defensive side of the football for this defense of grimsley and he you just see the stats nine tackles for loss coming into this one as well as three sacks leading the team just an absolute animal no travis shaw up front on the starting lineup for grimsley shaw the five-star player committed to the university of north carolina still working his way back from an off-season shoulder injury coach brown said he's working his way back he'll be back in there soon did not rule out we could see shaw tonight that would be huge for grimsley to get him back up front second down in 10 ball on the right side of the 50. little pop pass over the middle and incomplete looking for carter again but it brings up the first third down to the night again you see that rpo action there just really quick it's not going to be a a long delay here people like to think maybe it's a play action but tanner blew below has the chance to hand that ball off so he goes up the middle but he's pulling it out based on what he sees up front if there's pressure coming up the middle of the defense he has the option to pull that ball out keep it himself or throw the ball down the field xavier simmons the missouri commit in the backfield third down the first one of the night for this viking offense play clock inside of ten below wants to throw to the flat and off the hands of trent cloud and brings up fourth down cloud only a sophomore mark offers already from michigan state west virginia louisville and charlotte you saw some of that right there the instinct to break on that football that's going to be key here though for this offense as quickly as they want to move with what they're doing with their run pass options they have to be careful a lot of those quick passes if you continue to go back to that well it's trouble looks like they're going to go for it here on fourth down and 10 near midfield and you do wonder if maybe this is one of those quick kick situations for the quarterback baloo he's backing up looks like maybe punting this one away yeah it is that quick kick formation trying to coughing corner grimsley back in there and a great kick that'll roll out near the 10-yard line so a phenomenal kick there by the quarterback and grimsley will have a long field of their first offensive drive and get a chance again battle the quarterbacks here tonight we're gonna get our first chance to see what this grimsley offense can do with alonzo barnett and barnett the commit to jmu the mvp of the state championship game a season ago look at the starting lineup for grimsley powered by the united states navy set your career in motion call your navy recruiter today america's navy forged by the sea watch out for julia melton a couple big wide receivers out there as well tons of playmakers for this grimsley offense they start four wide start on the ground cutting one to the outside it's melton with his 63rd carry of the year there is a flag down and the area of a hold would negate a nice run for jalil melton the 510 senior melton just such a tough runner to bring down he's also got some pretty good hands out of the backfield as well chris comes into this one not just with all the rushing yards but also 118 through the air as well so a dynamic playmaker out of the backfield chris barker our referee tonight and it is indeed a hold on grimsley that's one of the things that daryl brown talked to us in our conversation this week he said we've got to be better at eliminating some of those silly penalties those unforced errors right and that's what's going to give them a chance to win the ballgame here tonight this is a very good northwest guilford team if you give them opportunities to push the football down the field and just give them more opportunity to get free yards they're going to make you pay one way or another later as the game continues to go on darrell brown in his 17th season overall his sixth season as the head coach at grimsley now back to deep in their own end it's melton straight ahead and gets out near the 15-yard line carrying a couple of tacklers with him melton a guy that coach brown said will play at the next level absolutely you see it there just a strength in the middle there to run the football break some tackles fall forward and pick up a few extra yards as well you want to see your senior running back towed the rock with effectiveness 5 10 175 and plays a whole lot bigger than what is listed sizes second down man in motion and a flag will stop the proceedings the second penalty on grimsley it'll be a procedure penalty and that will not make the head coach very happy now i think an interesting thing as we move along tonight mark to watch is this grimsley offensive line coach brown pointed out that you know we won a state championship last year we're really young up front not a single senior on that offensive line yeah and you just see that youth that we talked about in the opening and also up to this point on both sides of the football that offensive line for grimsley is no exception they have to play really well here tonight to keep their quarterback in the running game going second down and long here this is melton on the carry again and he's pushed out of bounds after a minimal gain first third down of the night coming for this grimsley offense that was just so good getting to the edge and turning that corner has speed we talk about a guy playing at the next level he's got to have all the tools the speed the vision and the power and so far even though it hasn't equated too much yardage just yet melton has really gotten it done when he's had the football in his hands it's been all melting on this drive an offense for grimsley that has been mostly passed this year they're averaging 271 yards a game through the air versus 136.5 yards on the ground per contest but it's been all runs here so far facing a third down and six opening drive of the game for the whirlys five wide pressure coming barnett throwing for the first time tonight it's melt near the sticks has a first down and shakes free melton galloping down the sideline one man to beat high stepping to the end zone [Applause] and down at the one tenth catch of the season for melton and a huge third down conversion for grimsley it's a pickup of 67 yards you get the hands that we see from melton here we already talked about his receiving ability coming out of the backfield and now running down the field and getting a nice play and now straight ahead it's melton who caps the drive with a touchdown run grimsley strikes first and it's a sunbelt reynolds touchdown for grimsley sunbelt rentals offering rental locations across the triad to quickly deliver ready to work equipment when and where you need it does letting him finish the drive himself should have finished it there on the long reception but also down the field his defense is tired running all the way down the field just a quick snap give it to your elite back in the backfield for a one-yard plunge and now prego on for the extra point drives it through and it's grimsley who takes the opening lead in the ball game one possession for each side and it's all jaleel melton who marches the whirlies down the field and punctuates the drive it's a seven point lead for grimsley when you come back to greensboro on the friday night rivals [Music] okay for the vikings seven nothing grimsley here early in the first quarter an impressive touchdown run and just driving general mark for the grimsley whirlys i think he was actually really symbolic of what we can see this offense do and also what's holding them back those penalties to start the drive and then the explosiveness on the back end from one of its elite weapons julio melton carter with a chance to return from the ten had a nice return to start the ball game and looking for a big answer carter set sail into the second level a 60-yard kickoff return and it's first in 10 vikings for the plus 40. i'm telling you folks you came here for a college future showcase this is it carter making his impact now the response is so huge after that first touchdown how is the opposing team going to answer back and just like that carter sparks a nice drive and just like that starting in plus field position after giving up a huge pass on the previous drive defensively now northwest guilford is set up in plus territory and ready to work it's an offense that is starting to find its rhythm in the words of their head coach kevin wallace in his fifth season guiding the viking program he'll start on the ground with xavier simmons the missouri commit and it's a five-yard pick up on first down for simmons a guy that will go both ways for this northwest guilford club just another one of those athletes when you look at the field there's a lot of guys that actually platoon here tonight these aren't huge rosters so you got guys they're going to play both ways and they have an impact on both sides of the ball as well simmons listed as a four-star recruit the number seven player in north carolina from some of the recruiting services kevin wallace spoke so highly of xavier simmons saying he's a student of the game he's so smart he knows the blocking schemes so he knows where the holes are going to be always helpful when you have a back that understands what you guys up front are doing blue wants to throw pop pass to the outside spinning off of one tackler keeping his feet as trent cloud and cloud down inside the 20 another crescent forward first down looks like that's the moves on the back end of that play that time but nice pass by below but by blue out to the outside nice composure that time able to get down the field game of 12 and another first down just see here the footwork the presence of mind to get that ball out finds the soft spot in the zone and just making some magic on the back of that one getting some extra yards into the boost mobile orange zone for the first time tonight boost mobile america's fastest and largest 5g network certainly appears as we continue our crusade to change the football lexicon under the ground it's payne who tries to cut one to the outside paying inside the 10 and it'll be first and goal for the vikings and just a nice carry finding the edge that on this defense for grimsley and working its way up field we've seen some successful runs from two offenses that are predicated on passing the football working that run is going to be paramount for a victory here tonight on both sides of the football right now they're standing on even ground there's actually mike godette beggar pardon who got the call and now from the six yard line first down and goal to go second time cadets got loose on the right edge of that offensive line too sorrantos the motion man low snap again time over the middle and incomplete more good coverage by tyler clyburn the 5 9 corner that's going to be a fun matchup to watch tonight clyburn against bristol carter two guys that can really fly and you can tell there's a an effort to get that football into carter's hands so far the electric kick return already has one catch to his name so far tonight that is going to be a fun matchup just a number of matchups that we've got on the field here tonight that's going to be so exciting to watch i'll be interested to see what the play call goes where we go from here because right now this northwest guilford team has run the ball pretty well in the the attempts they've had up to this point and looking where the field shrinks down you don't have as many passing lanes to work with running the ball is so paramount and now timeout call by northwest guilford didn't like the look so their head coach kevin wallace wants to talk about it kevin wallace who was the offensive coordinator at glenn before getting the job here at northwest guilford was all set to go and become the offensive coordinator for adrian snow at west forsyth but said nah this job came open wanted to get this job and why not he's done a really good job of developing talent here at northwest guilford last year they went six and two in the spring was their first winning season since 2016 mark and they're trying to build something here trying for their first back-to-back winning campaign since they went six straight years winning seasons from 2010 to 2016. and they've got about as good a chance as anyone right now to do that correct i mean you look at the talent that's on the field here tonight especially that northwest guilford is fielding he's done a great job of really cultivating a culture here that is based on winning they know how to win they are figuring out now how to transcend just winning and move up to the next next level where you are considered a a championship contender to your point he said they're learning how to practice and learning how to prepare in pregame those are all things you have to do to learn how to win and that's how you perfect your craft that's how you continue to move up the ladder second down and go to go another low snap it's simmons straight ahead and he moves the pile inside the five it's a rugby scrub that simmons moves down to the two yard line a gain of four it'll be third and goal future tiger just keeping those legs moving down the field as lyman obliged to keep moving him down there as well just a nice scrum now only yards away from the end zone again those passing lanes that you have to throw into shrink down they're non-existent once you get closer and closer to the end zone i'll be interested to see what northwest guilford he pulls out here the rpo is such a huge part of their offense see if they whip some of that out and maybe do a little something different we've only kind of seen slant routes so far up to this point with those plays that they've run with the rpo bristol carter is off here for this third down and goal play full house backfield it's back to simmons who powers his way in touchdown vikings well that's just too easy there's not working off the right side that right side that offensive line is doing excellent job in run blocking so far here tonight we've seen gillette have a few nice runs off the right side and now that time simmons just untouched into the end zone great job by his big uglies up front and that was easy for the future mizzou tiger fourth rushing score of the season for simmons another sunbelt reynolds touchdown and now northwest guilford a point away from tying this one up as cameron will trot on for the extra point again that response after giving up the first touchdown the game is so huge and you can see these young vikings are ready to play tonight [Applause] this week what culture he tries to establish and he says he preaches to tell his guys great attitude and toughness and he says he wants his guys to be both mentally and physically tough as they go out each week on friday night chris and mark hannah that's exactly right and they're showcasing some of those pillars here early in the first quarter i've been so impressed so far from both sides we've got a potential great game here so far in this one chris and it's just gonna continue to get better again we talk about how young both these rosters are how they're still trying to find their way around this high school landscape in the triad area and right now the talent is evident on both sides of the football right now we could be in for for a nice little a nice little contest a clash of titans if you will here in greensboro cameron tippett ready to put it in play again boy a good ball game here between these two long time rivals getting into the meet of conference play this one's sailing back toward the goal line and is returnable for northwest guilford comes this way for antonio shaw and shaw wrangled down shy of the 15-yard line it's a 13-yard return and first and 10 grimsley who set sail for their second offensive drive and shaw thought that was going to be a touch back his his left foot actually went into the end zone and north carolina high school football states if the ball goes into the end zone it is a touch back so as long as the ball doesn't sail into the end zone it could be any body part that ball is returnable it's a live football at that point so grimsley starts first and ten off their own 14 yard line it was a steady diet of the run for the whirlys when they started the ball game but spread the field here on five watts melton fake the fly sweep quick out terrell anderson hauls it in and then he is chaperoned out of bounds by christian white the team leader with two interceptions this year for anderson mark that's just his second catch of the season yeah just another one of these weapons though that really get to work within the space of this grimsley offense playmakers everywhere and splitting five wide is gonna be so challenging trying to find who you're gonna really guard one on one because at that point almost becomes pick your poison against this offense at grimsley after a gain of 11 a crescent forward of high point first down northwest guilford chose blitz design roll out for barnett throws off his back foot and short hopped his receiver looking for anderson again [Music] another second down coming short armed a little alligator arm on that one just couldn't complete it it's the first incompletion of the night for barnett who started the game two for two a 61-yard pass play a 12-yard pass play and now second down and 10 coming for the whirlys just the engineer of this offense is alonzo barnett yeah it looks like we had a penalty there too mark it was a hold on grimsley so now that one backed up 10 yards it's second down in 25. i don't know that i saw that flag i didn't either [Music] but nevertheless alonso barnett is going to have to really be a catalyst for this offense here tonight make sure he's seeing the field well understanding when he needs to run and when he needs to throw he's a dynamic athlete he can work with his legs or with his arm he's just got to make the right decision to read tonight back to the ground this is melton trying to spin off of a tackler ball nearly came loose good defensive play that time by dylan kesserling the middle linebacker who is committed to catawba to play college lacrosse a two-time all-conference pick making his team best 34th tackle of the year just want to see how downhill this northwest guilford defense is going to play here tonight just how much are they going to crowd the line of scrimmage because we already noted how young this offensive line is for grimsley so northwest has a chance to apply some of that pressure and see how frustrated how confused this offensive line of grimsly could really turn out to be last third down grimsley hit a 61-yard pass play see what transpires here on third down and 23. barnett wants to throw he's flushed scrambles and dax is out of bounds another nice job by this northwest guilford defense led by kesseling their middle linebacker ushering him out of bounds and fourth down coming up just like he was spied on that time good pressure applied up the middle shedding the tackles working his way back inside barnett broke contain but still had a spy on him that entire time forces him out of bounds well short of the sticks now barnett is also listed as the punter so we'll see both clubs it appears try to just quick kick it here but it's actually listed as third down not fourth down thought we were at fourth down but now third down and 15 they're going to throw barnett rolls the pocket right and just ducks this one down remember there's no tackle box in high school football and there was a receiver in the area no flag it'll be fourth down officially this time well melton was actually right in the area i believe they were looking for a screen that time trying to get it to him just nowhere to go great job by the defense of northwest guilford to flow with that play stay with their men and force the incompletion that time it just really that time barnett had nowhere to go with the football now coach wallace the head coach of northwest gopher told us this week he really loves his linebacker course so those three guys in the middle the cream of the crop and grimsley now wants to call a timeout that's their first of the half a little confusion here for the whirlys i tell you what northwest guilford has been game here in the early stages mark they're not overwhelmed by the game by the reigning 4a state champs in their house in the second week of conference play what's the saying if you come at the king you best not miss and right now northwest guilford isn't missing they're taking their shots and they're landing body blows against this whirly team this is a grimsley team mark that has won 20 or beggar probably won 14 straight games that's the second longest active streak in the state the only team that's won more consecutive games reedsville will see the rams next week at walkertown reads won 23 consecutive just high level football that we've had we had a great game last week we got reagan in west east guilford so now we get a a fantastic contest to start this week hopefully a great one next week but you just look at the talent just oozing off the field here tonight it's permeating off the field and on your screen at home you got to love what you've seen so far if you love football if you just love how well football is played at its highest peak in north carolina this game through the first few minutes of this first quarter has been it punting for the first time tonight it is barnett who does the punting no rush and this perhaps returnable for carter who instead watches it bounce but more good field position coming for northwest guilford as they'll start from their own 40-yard line and looks like there is a flag down as well so we'll check on the laundry here before the vikings start their third drive i'll tell you what i really love the rhythm [Music] that the vikings were in on their last possession really mixing in the run and the pass quite well that time a lot of those runs were designed i think there wasn't a whole lot of rpo i really love how they attacked this defense of grimsley on the last drive really took it to them didn't wait to see what grimsley was going to do they dictated the flow that they were how they were able to put a scoring drive together so block in the back on northwest guilford so that'll back them up a little bit so instead of starting from the 40 they'll start back around the 25 30 yard line so it should be northwest ball from their own 25 if they mark off the penalty for northwest guilford that's their first infraction of the night [Applause] and a little confusion as we mark off the infraction now we're ready to go i guess just a 10-yard penalty so first and ten off the 30-yard line even then still fairly good starting field position you're at the 30-yard line 70-yard yards to go still but much better than most play action balloon looking this way coming back to the football is cloud but he can't bring it in [Music] trent cloud just the sophomore we mentioned the litany of offers he already has michigan state west virginia louisville charlotte his brother played football here at northwest guilford now plays football at richmond just a sophomore we talked with coach wallace about his maturation this week so you know he's still learning how to be a wide receiver and that's such an incredible thing with all those offers finding a way to still play on the offensive side of the football handoff and a gaping hole here for mike gannett who's into the second level and out near midfield another crescent forward first down this engine getting warmed up for northwest guilford i'll tell you what i don't know if they just don't know that mike cadet is out there because he is so small on stature but he's working the right side of that offensive line again finding a gaping hole on the right side and taking full advantage of that one a huge gain his biggest other night so far a pickup of 18 yards another crescent ford first down and after just two plays northwest guilford already approaching midfield as we approach the final four minutes and change of this opening stanza good one so far from billing stadium simmons straight ahead and just drags a man to the ground how about the power run that time by simmons finally wrestled down by a quarry and diablo the outside linebacker but a pickup of six on first down how don't you love that running style if you're an offense that's so predicated on throwing the football when you run you've got to make sure you're getting every single yard you possibly can you got a guy like xavier simmons back there toting the rock and finishing runs like that it is huge for your team another low snap this one back to simmons hurdles the man stiff arms the man and down inside the 35 yard line a man run by the missouri quarterback and just great blocking downfield as well he really didn't get touched he was at least five yards down the field and that was after he worked the edge for a while this offensive line on the right side is taking over and this coaching staff is recognizing that making play calls in that direction and they are taking full advantage of this grimly d after a gain of 14 it's gadette who totes the male and tripped up inside the 30 yard line late flag flies in too might be in the area of a hold and indeed it is a hold on northwest guilford their second infraction of the night you mentioned the offensive line for northwest guilford they're another group that has no seniors across that offensive line as a matter of fact three juniors a sophomore and a freshman up front for the vikings i mean that's absolutely wild but think about what they can grow into i mean you just see how the future could possibly develop here i think any coaching staff in america would tell you if you have a great starting five in front there's nothing you can't do if they can get everything going change the line of scrimmage win the battle in the trenches you've got you can't get in business with anything little bubble screen dangerous pass but the catch is made by cloud and then cloud tries to spin off a man gets most of the penalty yards back but it'll still bring up a second down and long formation really a nice job throw the football that time by blue put the ball out in front of the receiver you see it here great blocking down the field that's a nice little play that was just running right there you can see cloud fighting for yards again if you want to get those offers and have them keep coming in the sophomore fighting for everything while still learning the position that that bubble screen is that like an extension of the running game for northwest guilford well it could and it's just another variation of the rpo that we've heard so much kevin wallace told us about that his offense really running through that bootleg near side for ballou gonna fire one downfield into the seam it's cloud again for the catch and he's close to the marker [Music] it was second down and long and might be enough to move this chains a pickup of 13 and another crescent forward first down for the viking offense that right now mark appears to be having their way they are running on all cylinders right now they are running the football well they are throwing it with ease again they are dictating the flow of this game right now they are controlling the tempo and this grimsley defense has no answer for what they're doing right now kevin wallace and his staff are calling a terrific game up to this point final 90 seconds of the opening stanza cadet and he's going nowhere thrown for a loss khalil steps in the outside linebacker right there to make the stop for a loss of three and just like that they come right back down the field great penetration up front by this grimsley defense stimson sniffing that one out on his blitzing route and right place at the right time just see him blitzing straight through pulling guard that time just happened to miss the block coming around was a little trap just could not pick up stimson as he came down field and stopped that play before he could get anywhere second down and officially 12. [Applause] being behind the chainsani has certainly not impacted the vikings ability pressure off the edge oh a big hit on baloo and just gets rid of that one incomplete but he was sandwiched between a couple of defenders tell me thompson was the first man there and he put a big hit on the sophomore quarterback yeah it looked like blue was looking out into the flat that time but his back just turned up field right before he could ever ever actually have a chance to catch that football just turned up field right as blue got hit and got rid of that football so right play call just maybe a little bit of the the timing being off that time and couldn't connect third down coming up for northwest guilford they hand it away to cadet spins off one tackler but cannot get away from the second and we'll bring up a fourth down but i believe there is a flag on the play as well and there is zebras have had a pretty busy night so far to this point to this juncture they have not ruled anybody in bounds that was out of bounds it was a hold against northwest guilford another penalty on the vikings their third of the opening quarter just really working in between the plays and giving this offense for northwest guilford which right now does not need any help and they're just giving them free yards you can't do that daryl brown told us about that this week as you are alluded to chris they can't be giving away free yards to an offense that's this potent interesting that grimsley took the penalty yards to replay third down versus declining the foul and making it a fourth down situation so now third down and 22 for the vikings [Music] and before the play a whistle and a procedure penalty here against northwest guilford [Music] and after such a promising start to the drive it's become derailed by penalties the fourth of the night the second in as many plays for the vikings obviously not going in the right direction now but it is interesting because as you look at the field you can only see one safety back on this defense and obviously this is a down a distance where you think that this offense is going to throw the football down the field they got to feel good in their one-on-one match-ups and man coverage bellew gets the play from the sideline play clock winding down [Applause] and does grims does northwest guilford want to take a time out i believe they do got a guy back deep as well so they are going to go for it here baloo taking a shot into double coverage and it's caught stretching for the pylon it's cloud who is out inside the five it'll be first and goal for northwest guilford how about that catch you want to talk about getting lost what a play down the field blue giving his guy a shot to go up and make a play on this football and carter making a play over the db that time exceptional job finding the ball in the air locating it and then high pointing it as well a great play all around a gain of 38 yards for bristol carter it's a have been in winston-salem by that point just what the confidence that is coming off of that northwest guildford sideline you can feel it from up here in the booth chris it is it is massive you can just feel it the whole way up here and with a young team like northwest guilford has how much do those plays where it was a fourth down conversion you give it to your your big upperclassmen there how much does that boost the confidence and boost the the hey we can do this on that sideline massive they are huge confidence boosters and really there might not be any plays that come up like that that would be bigger i mean just just look at the play in and of itself you're talking about fourth and forever and you're it's it's one play and it was about double maybe even triple coverage bristol able to pick it up and get a couple yard return there now we'll see how grimsley responds this is a grimsley team that is used to being down they were down 12 at halftime a couple weeks ago at reagan gonna be interesting to see what the whirlys do offensively and if you want to look back and see what this team has done to this point in the season they've won a bunch of close games they know how to win close football games to this point in the season you talk about 21-19 28-14 and 27-17 last week so they know how to win in close contests alonzo barnett the third already 73 passing yard to the first quarter of play starts on the air here a little short out and a nice catch made by tyson resper the 5-7 senior his 18th catch of the season that's a nice little play allow burnett to get some rhythm going here in the second quarter now had the 73 yards passing in the first quarter but not a whole lot of rhythm with what this offense was trying to do just allow him to set his feet make an easy throw to the outside and build that confidence now after a gain of five second down in medium empty set for the whirly spin a lot of those so far tonight for grimsley [Applause] melted in motion they faked the sweep barnette plenty of time down the seam skying up was noah albright but he couldn't haul it in good coverage in the secondary that time by northwest guilford i believe it was connor balton the outside linebacker who was up there along with ryan deboe to help and cover just what a play too broke on the football that time nice play recognition grimsley looked like they had it here but debo great concentration tracking the ball in the air and making a play debo a true freshman playing in the secondary for this northwest gilford club now third down in five for the whirlys another empty set chris plenty of time for the quarterback fires to respawn over the middle makes the catch ball comes out and the vikings pounce on it returnable for northwest guilford and out of bounds the game's first turnover a late flag for the celebration too but i believe it was bristol carter who picked up the loose ball and marks it forward and perhaps a little chippy on the field as we take another look another easy throw that time for burnett good rhythm throw but just a nice play on the back end pop that one out that was xavier simmons forcing the fumble and bristol carter picking it up six to five a little bit of chippiness on the sideline such a highly contested football game right now again defending state champ versus the the up and comer the young team trying to make a statement and the unsportsmanlike call listed against grimsley here after the play was over so that'll be a free 15 yards for northwest guilford and right now it's this upstart viking program that's playing with a ton of emotion and energy again if you want to take a shot at the king the the area the person the team the program that you are trying to get to the level that they're at you got to make sure when you have an opportunity to go against them you stand toe to toe it's the fourth penalty of the night on grimsley something that grimsley head coach daryl brown said they have to eliminate have to be more fundamentally sound not been that in terms of penalties through the first quarter first almost 13 minutes of the game well and who knows their only points of the night so far have come right after a long pass down to the one yard line but before that it was a penalty-laden drive as well so that's obviously been a point of emphasis for coaster for this coaching staff and right now their team is not responding to what they've been preaching so far now ready to go tanner baloo facing that four-man front pressure off the edge design rollout baloo steps in heaves one downfield and intercepted was the inbounds he was what an interception it's jordan watkins the senior who makes the big pick and one turnover deserves another [Music] back and forth the pendulum of momentum swings in this one right now balloon finally making his first mistake of the night this grimsley secondary makes him pay set his feet he had his receiver i believe that was cloud underneath he was open just air mailed that one and just like that grimsley and watkins take it right back seventh interception of the season thrown by tanner ballou remember he's a sophomore kevin wallace the head coach of northwest guilford said you know sometimes he does things that a sophomore would do that a first year starter would do exactly but he makes really good throws and you've seen it so far but again when you're young like that you're gonna make mistakes as coaching staff understands it they're willing to take those lumps melting straight ahead and just a couple yards there seems like the game now maybe at a point where both coaches would love to see it slow down a little bit so much competition taking place on the field so highly contested so far in this one you already saw some of the chipping is bleeding through on the northwest guildford sidelines you see the turnover chain there for i love it and the cape too yeah jordan watkins also our biscuitville scholar athlete you'll see him at halftime design roll out barnett had that one deflected away believe it was one of those big guys up front getting his paw in there again like it was simmons who got his hand on it brings up third down supplying that pressure getting into the face of barnett that's how you make any quarterback uncomfortable it doesn't matter if it's alonzo barnett or tom brady from from a to b from high school to the pros any quarterback that's not feeling comfortable within his playing space within the pocket his own backfield he's gonna get flustered he's gonna make rough decisions with the football in his hands and to this point this northwest guilford squad defensively he's done a really good job of unsettling alonzo barnett third down and seven [Applause] again empty here for the whirlys pressure now barnett gonna run eludes a tackler and does a dance to get eight yards and move the chains should be good enough for another crescent ford first down check out the newest four hammer away against this defense those are gonna be the plays that will eventually add up and they will matter in the end because three four five yards will eventually turn into six seven eight nine and ten already six carries for melton tonight remember he had that big catch down to the one yard line earlier in the game northwest guilford shows blitz plenty of time here for barnett now he's flushed gonna try to do it with his legs again and he's wrangled down from behind good open field tackle that time after a gain of four and brings up another third down you can kind of see what northwest guilford is trying to do defensively if they are bringing pressure up front against that young offensive line that the whirlies have they're also adding a spy that's going to look right at alonzo burnett so if he takes off outside the pocket you've got a viking following him wherever he happens to go they're making that a point they're not going to let this quarterback beat them with his legs [Applause] third and three more pressure as his melton straight ahead crosses midfield moves the chains again for this whirly offense you know chris they already got a touchdown drive again really helped by a long passing play but this may be their best drive of the game to this point so far very methodical staying on schedule and handling their business playing really well up front and moving that ball down the field oh so oh so slow after a seven yard gain seventh play of the draw and look at this formation three receivers bunch to the bottom of your screen usually a formation like that is a lot closer to line of scrimmage and now timeout called by grimsley that's the final timeout for the whirlys and head coach daryl brown who wants to reset and while they reset we'll take the some football at the highest level and there's no better opportunity than the one they face here tonight against the defending champions first and 10 grimsley from the right side of the 50. back to melton straight ahead into the second level spins off a tackler and down to the 36 yard line it's another crescent ford of high point first down melting keeps the legs turning and now starting to get into that plus territory after a gain of 34. yeah they're doing a really good job on this drive just continue to move the football not in chunks but just bits and pieces continuing to convert those first downs that time is just good old-fashioned smash mouth football straight up in the middle of that defense and julio milton still continuing to have himself an impressive night so far actually a 14-yard pick up there by melton so it's first and ten play action barnett plenty of time goes to the outside and overthrew his receiver trying to hit terrell anderson the sophomore anderson's had a really good sophomore campaign already 21 catches he's averaging almost 94 yards a game yeah he is the receiving leader for this whirly offense you see it there just the size right away you see across the board not just him but this entire receiving core they've got some good size to them as well just another part of this offense that's so potent when they are running on and clicking on all cylinders anderson 6-2 195 only a sophomore man he's going to be a high prospect melton's going to be a prospect too as he shakes free and breaks the tackle down the sideline extra yards for melton who stays in bounds and gets down inside the 10. a huge run for jaleel melton a gain of 32. and they're into the boost mobile orange zone chris i can't help but think right before that play he's wearing number 15. it looks almost a little bit like ezekiel elliott when he played for ohio state just breaking it back inside shows the burst to the outside breaking inside with the instincts and fishing off of the power back to the ground melton lowers his head and is stonewalled nicely inside the five-yard line another really good tackle that time up front by gabe salazar looked like it was carson shelton that was also in there too mark sorry that's just punch for punch right now i mean these these these two teams are going at it and just when you thought northwest guilford might start to put a bit of a a hold a stranglehold on this football game grimsley's now fought back barnett rolling looking now gonna reverse field he's got some blockers that way he directs traffic sidesteps one defender and scores [Applause] one of the best two yard runs you'll ever see and it's grimsley who's right back in it i'll tell you what if it wasn't one of the best it was one of the longest great play though at that time burnett reversing field didn't find anything on the rollout and there was no one on the back side of that play pursuing him for northwest guilford behind the line of scrimmage locates that runs back across the field got a few targets open the end zone but if you can finish it off yourself why not sure bet barnett finds paydirt another sunbelt reynolds touchdown for grimsley and now colin prego will try to knot it up sneaks that one inside the upright and as we approach the midway point of the second quarter at barn burner here at northwest guilford it's the whirlys who spin their way down the field barnett running for his life a great two yard touchdown run and it's 14 all midway through the second quarter when you come back [Music] [Music] legs 14 all midway through the second stanza chris edwards mark covert hannah brady the rest of our great team with you from billing stadium it's like a heavyweight fight here in the first half blow for blow these two are going at it right now it might be a case of which team has the football last and i know we're still a long way to go but shaping up that way ready for another arnold jones kickoff that's prego with a pooch kick this is returnable north of the 30-yard line shimmering three is christian white and white out across midfield a nice return of 22 yards before he's drugged down [Applause] and it'll be first and 10 northwest guilford as they start on the right side of the 50. i gotta wonder if he actually set that up by himself white just worked his way back towards the middle of the field and maybe just was trying to lure the that return team or not with the return team but the kickoff coverage for grimsley back to the middle he cut right back outside and got all those yards a nice play that time by white take a shot down the field if you're northwest guilford here i think about it they haven't yet fumble another loose snap and i believe it was grimsley who pounces on the football and they do the whirlies fall on it and it's nick richardson who comes away with a fumble recovery this was only a matter of time before there was going to be a turnover on one of the snaps all night long so far if there has been one bugaboo that we have not brought up yet with this northwest guilford offense it's been the way the ball has been snapped so far tonight almost all of them have been low a few of them have dribbled back to baloo so now finally one doesn't get the whole way back throws the play off and grimsley back in business just like that second turnover of the night for northwest guilford your point well taken a lot of low snaps by that center quarterback exchange tonight so now grimsley trying to take the lead and see if they go back to melton who's already got 66 yards rushing tonight on just nine carry play action barnett looking left goes that way nearly intercepted but a nice catch and look at carrying men with them it's terrell anderson the leading wide receiver and now a little bit of a scrum there on the far sideline across the way but curious where they spot the football no forward progress was given here it appears that ball was caught all the way back up towards the 40 it looked like dangerous throw that time way to come back to the football that time by anderson and to fight for possession of that one but you see the vikings flow to the football i don't think there's anything dirty on the back end there partner christian white up to make the stop they did give him four progress so a seven yard gain second and three melton again shaking free melton spun down inside the 30. another nice run he'll pick up another crescent forward of high point first down crescent forward of high point we keep you rolling now first down and 10 for the 29. really nice vision that time by melton gets the carry to the right side of his offensive line that time it just takes nice little stutter step let the block develop for him on the right side and from there was clear coasting until he got to the second level after a gain of 12. already the sixth first down of the night for this grimsley offense have not led since it was seven to nothing plenty of time a little out looking for anderson comes back to the football stays in bounds tiptoes the sideline and we'll set the whirlies up near a first and goal to go just a physical specimen anderson on the outside that time burnett gets the football out to him a little low back towards him but anderson no trouble going back and getting that one and then just does it all the rest talking about a guy who's a wide receiver and an outside linebacker on the roster gain of 18 third catch of the night for anderson now first down and goal to go for the whirlys back to melton melton shakes his way inside the 5. and after a minimal gain of six it'll be second down and goal [Music] i'll tell you what this has been a different grimsley team i think that we've seen the first few drives all those penalties have gone away you're starting to see the potential that this offense has there's an injured viking down on the field too looks to be carson shelton and it is indeed shelton who is hopped to his help to his feet and you wonder shelter maybe had the wind knocked out of him it is a cool night one of the first true cool nights that we've had in the triad as fall is beginning to descend here and you wonder maybe do you worry about cramps because it's been so warm now becoming cooler at night well and i don't think it's just that it's gotten cooler it's actually significantly cooler than i think any of the games you really broadcast it up to this point so far so yeah the change in weather presents some challenges especially for this athletic training crew make sure that these players are kept in tip-top shape as best as they possibly can just a beautiful night for football gorgeous nice and cool everyone wants to talk about football weather this is football oh we're getting close but i don't know make it about 30 degrees cooler football a little bit of white on the ground too spoken like a true offensive lineman oh yeah all right second and goal here for north for grimsley just outside of the six if you're daryl brown who you're looking towards melvin easy i mean really jaleel melton's been your bell cow so far to this point he's done an excellent job of really running downhill picking up momentum quickly and getting downhill in a hurry inside the 10 that's got to be your guy high snap still loose and i scrum near the 20-yard line but it was grimsley there to recover the fumble believe it was albright who fell on the football it was noah albright and so we talked about the low snaps for northwest guilford and now a high snap over the head of barnett and albright good hustle to get back to that football and save this possession for the worleys but now third down and goal from the 17-yard line is this obvious passing down no more do you go to julia melton here it's a little bit different terrell anderson's been your guy down the field so far to this point you can see one safety back for the vikings take a shot into the end zone and see what number eight can do with the football in the air and daryl brown wants to talk about it using his final timeout by the way i would like to point out that with that touchdown earlier for grimsley they've now scored in double figures in 29 consecutive games it's the 10th longest active streak in the state is it good i think so remember grimsley interest played tonight having won 14 straight the second longest streak in our state the last loss for grimsley october 4th of 2019 lost to east forsyth by 1 21-20 so it's been a while another one of those programs that has a ton of historical depth to it and grimsley's been around for a while and this is a program that prides itself on tradition on excellence last season was just another shiny example of that right now they've got a pretty good test on their hands here in the northwest guilford territory hannah brady on the sideline has more on this grimsley football program hannah thanks chris yeah we're down here on the sideline and the grimsley offense has found their way back on the board 14-14 and we asked coach brown earlier this week if he felt any pressure you know being the state championship title holders and they said that he wasn't really had any pressure he said that they come in every week trying to play the game they're supposed to and just be the best that they can be every time yeah you're exactly right hannah no pressure on the club a lot of young guys a lot of new faces and now trying to convert this third down and go to go situation to the end zone and a leaping attempt from albright is incomplete now more questions for daryl brown paul is at the 19 do you think about a field goal here or do you go for it well again you look at the options you have to the outside and realistically it comes down to how much confidence you have your kicking game of course from the 20. that's not a kimmy not at the high school level yeah they might find themselves just in that no man's land that gray area on the field about a 37-38 yarder from here we saw northwest guilford convert a big fourth down earlier this quarter can grimsley do the same on fourth and goal from the 19. barnett with pressure flag is down and barnett down inside the 15-yard line he'll be short of the marker but this should be a turnover on downg you imagine if a northwest guilford would decline this penalty if it is indeed against the whirlys right now it's a six yard gain but still would not be sufficient to keep the drive a lot we'll see the vikings are awful confidence against the offense of grimsley and it is blocking the back there against grimsley so the turnover on downs reminds you that coming up in about three and a half minutes of game time we'll have the myspot.nc.gov halftime yes from their own 14-yard line bubble screen this is cloud and cloud dances his way out across the 30 yard line i think moving more like a cumulus cloud there as trent gets up the field yeah he was that time chris i've just been so impressed by a guy who's still learning how to play on the offensive side of the football cloud has been so good at not just doing his job as a receiver catching the football getting yards but understanding what his job on the field is that time setting up his blocks and following his blockers not trying to get too cute with it trying to work the sideline a little bit and picks up another fresh set of downs again of 16. one time out for the vikings over the middle and dropped trying to hit bristol carter who had a ton of running room if he could shake free i'll tell you he knew it and that's what the issue was that time was him just knowing that he had all that room to work with you see it here just gets his eyes up field too soon and loses the football he knows he had a big chance to make a huge play in his football game the first half winding down and just can't convert below six of 15 tonight really nice game for the sophomore quarterback who was playing jv football in the spring dumps one to cloud double covered and able to pick up just a couple of yards to bring up third down still give yourself a chance to open up your playbook a little bit you get even those few yards yes does it give you a first down no but you still give yourself a better opportunity to pick up the first down now because you had an effective second down play final three minutes of the first half second down and four third down and four after a gain of six i don't think trent cloud's been the guy so far here tonight in the passing game look to go to him here another low snap and claudius or vigor part in blue is pounced on in the backfield trying to get it to cloud there but another low snap collin shoaks the freshman center we haven't talked a ton about that but a freshman at center you know how important that position is on the offensive line they'll always tell you you can't have any play if there's no play to begin with and that all starts in the middle of that offensive line the ha the snap has to be clean keep everything on schedule and not delay the play any more than it has to especially when the snap is low now fourth down and eight we've seen baloo quick kick it a couple of times tonight looks like he's going to do it again and nearly had it blocked but gets off a whale of a kick and will be down just outside the 30-yard line you know you hear a lot about basketball teams at the end of the half trying to go two for one with the shot clock two possessions in the last 30 seconds well a chance for grimsley to almost do that here the whirlies get the football to start the third quarter if you punch one in here mark maybe you stick get some momentum back and then you get a chance to get the football to start the third period and i'll tell you what i wouldn't be surprised if grimsley takes a shot here to start this possession either we have not seen them do that to this point in the football game to start to move that football down the field again one high safety this time bristol carter's the only one back deep another empty set for the whirlys barnett wants to throw this way for resper and rest for giving forward progress to the 35 it's a gain of four [Applause] nice wide receiver in his own right two comes into this one with 17 catches for 258 and five touchdowns through the air so a reliable target again a nice rhythm throw that time for this offense and resper had nowhere to go after the catch but still a nice game no timeouts for grimsley down to 92nd for the half barnett a little bubble screen this is hauled in by anderson anderson into the second level anderson still on his feet and he's run down from behind inside the 30-yard line clock will stop to move the chains but a nice touchdown saving tackle in the second level and there's play calls like that that really gonna dial back some of that pressure that this defense for northwest guilford is bringing good tunnel screen to the inside anderson beats his man great blocking down the field a nice convoy and anderson's able to use that big body and frame get a few extra yards as well after a gain of 44. grimsley marching now inside the what they call the blue zone here inside the 30 and it's northwest guilford who wants to take the time out on defense here do you like this timeout for the defensive staff i i love it because you just give up a big play like that your defense may be reeling just a little bit again half of football has been so highly contested each team's gonna be gassed to a certain regard right before the half get you guys to settle back down and say hey look we've got an opportunity to still hold them here they are still almost 25 yards out make sure you're handling your assignments not playing hero football but having the accountability that you're going to hold your teammates to and maintaining that standard for yourself grimsley 4-0 northwest guilford 3-1 you can make the case that both of these clubs have been battle tested here early in the season and now getting into the second week of conference play we talked about it at the outset the halfway point of the regular season it seems like it's moving time for these teams well and i think when you look at the matchups that we have across the state this week this has to be one of the marquee ones not just because of the names that we have here but the potential fallout from the outcome of this game again you're talking about the defending champ going up against the up-and-coming program in northwest guilford and if the whirlies happen to come out of this with a victory it's another hard-fought win but the vikings take it that's a marquee win for this program move forward on under a minute to go from the 25 barnett wants to scramble now wants to throw one got his man open it's albright the tight end who's inside the 10 yard line a gain of 22 and a first and goal to go situation for the whirlys kept working his way down the field barnett did a great job of feeling that play saw the spy that northwest guilford has had on him for the entire first half kept his eyes down the field not looking to run but to pass and finds albright barnett back to the ground it says melton straight ahead melton maybe a yard remember no timeouts for grimsley they ran the football there mark i don't know that i'm so surprised maybe you're trying to catch this defense for northwest guilford off guard maybe not the wrong play call just didn't execute to its full potential vikings hoping to hold serve toward the end of the half back to melton straight ahead and he powers his way in for the second time in the half and it's grimsley on the board again just tough sledding right in the middle of that defense but another nice play another physical run bunch of leo melton you expect your big time players to make those big time plays and this is a big time game by all accounts another sunbelt reynolds touchdown for the whirlys talk about that two-for-one scenario grimsley gets the football back when the third quarter begins as prego puts it through and talk about punches and counter punches if you're grimsley you've got to love the fight that your football team has shown especially over the second quarter you always talk about how how's the underdog going to come out and attack the champion the king the man that's sitting on the throne with the crown on its head that's what exactly what northwest guilford did to start this one they they got out there and they punched this grimsley team right in the mouth and you do have to wonder because they're still young in so many areas in their own regard too how are they gonna respond and it's been a resounding yeah we're here to play football too so even though they have now scored those 14 unanswered this game is far from over but grimsley has done an excellent job of responding to the tenacity that northwest guilford has come out to play with college football continues tomorrow right here on i-48 as the elon phoenix welcoming into william and mary tribe to road stadium you can catch it right here tomorrow at two o'clock on wmyv our pals taylor durham matt krause and marilyn payne will have it for you tomorrow jmu missouri who knows where trent cloud's going to go say what a lot of guys that you're going to see playing on saturdays in this game tonight that's without travis shaw playing so far with the five-star commit to north carolina charlotte the second highest rated player to ever come out of north carolina squib kick and now returnable here for northwest guilford trying to make a play before the end of the half and not a lot of running room there for ryan deboe but 15 seconds for the vikings and that's that is enough time to make a play down the field and give yourself a shot putting some more points here on the board at the end of this first half they are just outside the 40s so it's gonna have to be pretty quick you gotta think if they're gonna take a shot it would be here on this first down of this possession really allow themselves to work into scoring range a couple of turnovers for northwest guilford balu rolls out floats one down the field and incomplete dropped again a couple of balls in the hands of bristol carter over the last two drives that he couldn't quite haul in carter took a pretty big hit there too actually i beg your pardon that was alex sarantos the intended target good job by blue to get outside the pocket rolling found his man but now we've seen a few drops from these receivers of northwest guilford that have been pretty costly it would have done a great job and ran you know seven seconds off the board that time would have set them up with a good shot to again give themselves a chance to score and put points on the board to carry in maynard and coverage there for grimsley now a second down in ten only eight seconds to go in the half [Applause] play action now in the jet sweep this is gadette who gets a couple of yards and that will probably and will indeed take us to the intermission well an exciting first half of football two teams slugging it out the reigning state champs in grimsley and the up and coming vikings of northwest guilford getting ready to retire to their locker rooms hannah standing by she's going to try to grab daryl brown here in just a moment we'll bring coach brown across if we can track him down to chat with hannah here at the break but mark a really fun first half of football if you like offense and barn burners this has been the first half for you it was absolute whirlwind i mean you want to talk about competition at the highest level of high school football in the state of north carolina this has been it so far here tonight grimsley coming in defending their title as state champ and northwest guilford trying to get on that level they came out landed a few punches but gil grimsley responded well and they carry that seven point advantage into halftime it was northwest gilford who came back tied the game at seven punch back took the lead then it was grimsley scoring back-to-back touchdowns thanks to a couple of turnovers for us by the worly defense yeah and just some of those errors were a little bit unforced really you could look at both of them and say they were a little unforced the low snap leading to a fumble that grimsley recovered and then just a high throw from the sophomore quarterback tanner baloo forcing that one down the field and to grimsley's credit capitalizing on those opportunities and turning them into points will be interesting to see the adjustments to the two teams make as we get ready to start the second half coming up in just a little bit what do you think the biggest adjustment or the biggest thing these two teams are talking about right now well if you're looking at that grimsley sideline it's just making sure when you come out at halftime yeah you're probably going to see the same response that northwest guilford had in the first half coming out of halftime as well they're going to come out fired up knowing now that they've got a puncher's chance and for the vikings in at some of our first half highlights mark covert a lot of offense a lot of scoring over the first 24 minutes of the game and it really got going early here as we see a couple big plays for the passing game for northwest guilford nice catch by bristol carter how about this rumble all the way down the field down to the one yard line by jamil melton and then he finishes the drive the first touchdown of the game made it seven nothing northwest guilford but don't worry seven nothing grimsley don't worry northwest guilford comes storming right back they march down the field nice shimmy and shake there get in for the touchdown run thanks to mr simmons pull those for the camera there he goes crowd loves it nice student section tonight then northwest guilford again trying to score the defense comes up big but how about this fourth down pass play yeah absolutely bristol carter already called his name once during this highlight reel and makes another highlight level play for xavier simmons to punch it in for the second time tonight but there were some mistakes we we saw some mistakes tanner baloo throwing in the interception there that time and grimsley takes it right back one of their first two turnovers of the half and i mean this this offense really took off after that talk about barnett making another play with his feet right here just making it happen evading the defense and finding pay dirt and this grimsley offense finally woke up after a few of those turnovers went their way the jmu commits with the most exciting two-year touchdown run you will ever see he went to the air found his tight end nolan albright and then toward the end of the half once again it's melton in for the second time tonight it's a 21-14 lead for grimsley as the at the break as we peak at the first half stats and when you look at the numbers it's going to start to tell you the story of the way this first half has started to go yeah you just talk about how early on northwest guilford had all the momentum in their side and then eventually just slowly coming back the pendulum momentum coming back in the favor of the grins grimsley wurlies you see it there just the yarnage grimsley able to grind out over 300 yards in the first half impressive for how this game started nine combined penalties three combined turnovers things that both coaching staffs i imagine will want to see cleaned up in the second half talk about coaching points and that's going to be a big one for them but beyond that it's going to be getting this young offense for northwest guilford back together and allowing them to make the plays that we saw them do quite often early on in this one it was really critical maybe the first five minutes of this second half especially with grimsley getting the football to start the third period yeah there may not be a more pivotal drive in this game overall if northwest guilford can find a way to stop grimsley coming out of the half and then put some more points to equal this game back up it's gonna be pretty good start to this second half and we might have a heck of a finish here in greensboro each week during halftime of our friday night rivals broadcast we're gonna be showcasing outstanding thursday night lights and friday night rivals game highlights from across the country let's look back at some of last week's terrific highlights from our nationwide series trying to do a bubble screen intersection by the warriors they're going to try to take it all the way back seth hampton into the end zone the defense put six on the board shot good snap drop picked off good job by rick's picking it up throws left has one-on-one coverage and a catch under pressure dumps it up for trying to dump it off to the tailback incomplete but we do have a flag on the play now was this a lateral or was this an incomplete pass as bennett picks it up and rumbles into the end zone there's a short kick though there's a bad snap once again he gets the ball away and everybody's going to clear away but except for elizabeth ray's going to pick it up he's going to go down and into the end zone oh it's intercepted taken out of the air the lineman's green he rumbles we're going to have some highlights especially the way this first half played itself out grimsley comes back from being down seven they have a seven point lead as we head into the start of the third quarter let's start to dive into these two huddles these two conversations at halftime we'll start with northwest guilford as hannah gets ready to talk with coach wallace quickly what do you think the biggest adjustment is for northwest guilford for the vikings it's getting back to how the first quarter was played for them they played such an exceptional first quarter getting out ahead and fighters the second half we just got to forget about our mistakes we made in the first half um we have three turnovers offensively it's a one score game uh we can do it we got to believe in it to finish it out absolutely and now you're down by seven what are your hopes to continue you know making big plays offensively uh we just gotta get the snaps up uh that's killing us right now but i think we'll be fine friday night plans mark we talked about it a little bit a moment ago but it certainly feels like the first drive for both teams in this third quarter really going to dictate the way the second half might go i think so you talk about a young team in northwest guilford that has done an exceptional job to this point in the football game of keeping themselves in it giving themselves a punchers chance but now they've got a test because the champion the defending champion the grimsley whirlys have answered with a resounding response ending with 14 straight points to end the first half up by seven so this drive here is key uh this there may not be a bigger drive in this game going forward chris because of how important it's going to be for this young team in northwest guilford to fight back and get themselves back into this one considering the three turnovers that we had in the first half two of them by northwest guilford really fundamentally sound first half and certainly feels like the turnovers in the second half are going to play a pivotal role in deciding the outcome and i think some of that actually may have to do with some of the weather we're seeing right now as as nice as it was when we started the game it's starting to get a little colder and you can feel some dampness in the air see some of the haze kind of setting over the grass on the field and that may have contributed to some of those turnovers there in the first half and you're right chris honestly you said in the first half this game could very well come down to the team that has the football last if they continue to go blow for blow like this that's a very strong possibility that this game is going to come down to the wire ready to start the third quarter time for another arnold jones [Music] and off we go in the second half rouse drives one into the end zone for a touchback and you have to wonder with rouse kicking off we saw the slip there at the end of the first half by cameron tippett you wonder if maybe tippet was injured and perhaps a little movement up front there on the kickoff someone a little over anxious to start the second half this officiating crew led by chris barker tonight the offside flag called against northwest guilford that is their sixth penalty of the night so rouse will have to kick it away again can appreciate enthusiasm just gotta make sure you're doing it legally of course just maybe another one of those results of having a young team trying to find an answer get a response get something going now to start this second half see if rouse can put another one into the end zone here a little further back i'd be impressed nice little at least 65 yard pooch he has to hit down the field try this again with another arnold jones services heating and air kickoff as we prepare to start the third stanza of play great to have you with us for our carolina classic fair friday night ride was presented by rowan law we'll try it again from the 35-yard line the second half underway brow slipping a little bit there this one bounces and we'll head to the end zone melton wisely let's that one roll past and it's first down in ten grimsley from their own 20-yard line just like any good golf shot let it dribble its way down down down the course down the fairway you like that doesn't matter how you drive it's how you arrive exactly switching gears back to football though you look at this offense led by alonso burnett had a strong end of the first half that time made some plays with his feet and allowed his team to operate within itself and make some nice plays as the half waned on barnett nine of 15 for 186 yards in the first half was melton leading the charge on the ground 13 carries for 86 yards and they start with melton who tries to bounce it outside and gets six out to the 26 yard line i'm really impressed by khalil melton's ability to change direction as well he was almost dead right to the middle of the field that time backer came up for northwest guilford and filled the hole that melton were supposed to run through stopped his feet on really almost on a dime change direction start working off the left side of his offensive line gets a nice pick up there for the first gain or a first play from scrimmage here in the half second and short melton again follows his blockers and out across the 30-yard line moves the chains it's another crescent ford first down test drive a new eco sport at crescent ford in high point it's got the things you need to do the things you've always wanted five move the chain the strategy really doesn't look like it's changed much from the first half definitely from the beginning of the first half for this offense for grimsley came out wanting to run the football and establish that with their star at running back jaleel melton and just like that picks up a first down nice run two by milton kelp has kept his balance and finished it by falling forward new set of downs barnett to throw for the first time this half comes this way for jordan watkins who makes his first catch of the night pick up a five and i think if you're daryl brown and offensive coordinators jesse tripp and will brown on that grimsley sideline you're going to be okay with five yards on first down and you're slowing the tempo of the game down allowing burnett to again set his feet make an easy throw to the outside to one of these playmakers that is so dangerous in space when they have the football in their hands jordan watkins just another example that already has an interception in this one too another empty set for barnett plenty of time dumps one over the middle and a diving attempting catch made hauling it in that time was jalil melton his first catch of the night his tenth of the season gained of 12 and move the chains again if not by land then by air melt in his second catch of the night and nice little throw this time burnett fountain let him inside a tight little passing lane to find milton in that time but a precise throw and a nice catch gain of 12 right on the season average of 13 yards per catch for melton who gets the call on the sweep crosses midfield and another nice first down gain from melton who will pick up nearly eight yards you know melton's just so good because it's so simple the way he's handling his this game the way that he plays the game of football it's not anything flashy it's getting up and down the field turning the corner breaking tackles eat your heart out to old school football because julia melton is here to serve it to you tonight opening drive of the third quarter back to pass barnett home run ball far side of the field had a step on his man as he was looking to hit his leading receiver terrell anderson the team's best wide receiver who leads the club with catches and yards receiving also has five touchdown catches as well it looked like he may have just gotten tangled up too during that route trying to make something happen just down the field christian white looked to be the man covering him a little disturbance on the route that time [Applause] just a little bit out of the reach that time now third down first third down of the drive for grimsley melton gets the call totes the male into the second level has a first down and more as he spun down to the 25 yard line and now both players are a little shaken up melton is down so is the tackler for northwest guilford it's a crescent ford of high point first down but that is a little concern right now [Applause] and again not a flashy run that time by melton just getting up field breaking some tackles and broke into the secondary it looks like it's xavier simmons maybe that's down for northwest guilford and you wonder if maybe it's just a cramp here melton still down and boy these could be a couple of really big losses if these guys are down so while they attend to these two injured players we'll take a break and we'll come back with more third simmons for northwest guilford able to come off the field like it was just a cramp maybe for simmons but melton seems to be a little sluggish as he heads back to the far side yeah it looked like he was in a little bit more pain than what xavier simmons was in his own right so hopefully melton is okay only for his own safety but also just to get back out here on the field because he's been tremendous for this offense at grimsley tonight and try to fill that void going forward as well that's a tough hole to fill but as any coaching staff across the country will tell you next man up mentality chicarian maynard comes in to replace melton and it's maynard who gets the call and is swarmed under immediately a gain of maybe a yard connor balton that outside linebacker up to make the tackle so coach kevin so for as well as this team though this brimsy offense has run on this defense of northwest guilford especially from the second quarter going into this second half now i would expect them to test that running game make barnett beat you through the air second and nine ninth play of the drive and some contact up front [Applause] see it there they got their ears pinned back i want to go back to the stop moment ago by connor balton though of northwest guilford head coach kevin wallace said you know our two outside linebackers balton and simmons obviously simmons going to the sec to play for missouri he said these are the two best outside linebackers in the area high praise certainly well and you've seen some of that ability here tonight just athletes working in space running down running backs getting out to wide receivers and spying on a quarterback who's quite quite fleet of feet in barnett second down in short back to maynard maynard into the second level still on his feet and stretches to the end zone a touchdown [Music] maynard with the touchdown run his first of the season and a united reynolds touchdown for grimsley are some belt rentals offering rental locations across the triad to quickly deliver ready to work equipment when and where you need it well big shoes to fill maynard says fine i'll step into those and i'll take the reins of this running back position a great run showing power and a little bit of speed and some flare at the back end to finish that one off and what an answer and a response for this grimsley offense to start the second half second half with a bang now the extra point is true and how about grimsley coming out marching down the field putting a little more of a stranglehold here with a 14-point lead midway through the third quarter you're gonna expect this offense now for northwest guilford it's do or die time so young across the board when you look at their roster especially offensively how are they going to respond and if there was ever a time to do that it's going to be on this ensuing drive santa blue's got to be great here in the second half i think we saw him make some nice plays in the first half but if you're going to get to the level that grimsley's at now the quarterback position has to transcend where it's at right now and go from being good to great coming up in the fourth quarter stay tuned to find out who is tonight's carolina classic fair player of the game the carolina classic fair second to none in 2021 grimsley starts the third quarter marching 80 yards in just nine plays to take a 14 point lead and to your point it is gut check time for this northwest guilford offense they have to answer on this drive because it almost feels like if they don't score and grimsley gets that ball back and puts points on the board that might be all she wrote in this one so much football still left to play but this northwest guilford offense has got to get going now they had they played so well in the first half and seemed like grimsley kind of figured them out a little bit in the second quarter they got to get back to the basics here another arnold jones services heating and their kickoff that's off the hands of one of the up mid and then just falling on it as a viking decent field position for northwest guilford as they get ready to start the third quarter you mentioned tanner baloo the sophomore quarterback seven of 17 in the first half 107 yards and we'll see what transpires here as they go back out offensively to for the first time here in the third period this coaching staff will be well to get their playmakers in space allow them to make moves they'll start on the ground mike gadette who squirts through the hole not across the 35-yard line he'll pick up eight on first down cadet again for his size he's he's the smallest guy out there on the field but he picks up yards efficiently and with a burst and look at some tempo now from northwest guilford down by two scores play action baloo had that one tipped and nearly intercepted once again it was watkins who had the interception earlier who almost picked up his second pick of the evening just sat right underneath that route that time and again it's going to come back to bite them if they don't start throwing the ball down the field trying to stretch the field and have these dbs back off the line of scrimmage another low snap blue able to handle that one just more rpo action i saw way too much of that in the first half this grimsley defense did they were waiting for at that time good to see xavier simmons back out there for northwest guilford the running back for this third down play six is on the field you gotta think it's going to him it does simmons tries to get to the edge drags a man with him and i think on second effort he gets it out to the 40 yard line another crescent forward first down test drive a new eco sport at crescent ford in high point it's got the things you need to do the things you've always wanted xavier simmons the thing that this offense needed to pick up that first down which was a strong run that time by the senior making a nice play that time enough to move the chains and continue this drive so a nice opening few plays for northwest guilford 43 yards rushing in the first half for simmons another low snap and simmons this time just gets swarmed under it's a loss of two and continuing to see those low snaps that that's been problematic for this viking offense and i think what usually ends up happening when you see the low snaps like that and they start to get a little wild is the center just wanting to get off the ball so fast that you want to be able to hit the guy that's in front of you you want to be able to hit him in the mouth and move him off the line of scrimmage that's great but you've still got a football to take care of you got to make sure the snap is getting back there clean so the plate can develop properly second and twelve below the pass tucks it and is going down a big sack in the backfield it's tamare thompson in for the sack he's been everywhere defensively a late flag has flown in too it's a loss of seven for the moment thompson the three-year starter making his presence known tonight leading this team in sacks here tonight just getting up field tanner just rolling out that time to the wrong side thompson was waiting and snatched him up for the easy sack let's check on the penalty looks like a personal foul caught against northwest guilford and things not going the vikings way in the first five minutes of this third quarter and that frustration is just starting to set in now showing a little bit more the young team got to stay composed in this environment in this situation going back to that sack from a moment ago with baloo was that another rpo for this northwest guilford office it looked like it and for them again it's about grimsley sniffing it out and sitting in those passing lanes just dropping down underneath and not allowing blue to sit back there and pick them apart so again this offense needs to start doing something differently they can't just be these slants these short crossing routes you got to start giving your guys a chance stretching the football down the field and you can see there's only one safety play in the middle of the field right now this defense for grimsley is not afraid of what the passing attack is going to do for northwest guilford they are confident at maintaining that foot that football around the line of scrimmage third down and all the way to the greensboro coliseum and i wouldn't be surprised if i started seeing this this grimsley defense play a little more aggressively start bringing a little bit more pressure into the face of tanner blue empty set for baloo for the first time tonight with the play clock winding down northwest guilford wants to talk about it so northwest gifford with the timeout will take it as well let's [Music] [Music] [Applause] coming up in the fourth quarter we'll highlight tonight's rhone law play of the game rowan law the triads injury attorneys third down and 35. that's a long way to go for this northwest guilford offense low snap and simmons again this is good at beggar pardon trying to shimmy free instead he's spun down at the 23-yard line brings up a fourth down and long just trying to get yourself out of this this possession this time it looks so promising to start with we got a first down we're moving the chains and then penalties and mistakes and turno and not turnovers but nearly yeah right low snaps still continue i mean this offense started this game so promisingly and now to this point they have not been able to muster much of anything from the second quarter now going into the second half it's tanner ballou who has done the punting tonight it looks like it's perhaps bristol carter who was drifted back and before this one a procedure penalty that will slow things down and back up the vikings five more yards just kind of looked like a man ran out late and just wasn't set by the time they had snapped the football just the mental mistakes are starting to add up whether it's for penalties or just performance on the field during plays against this vikings offense nine penalties now that look from kevin wallace tells it all four penalties in the first six minutes of this quarter young football team growing pains for sure again just like tanner blue playing the quarterback position the coaching staff is willing to take those lumps this is just another part of it it's just a team life team-wide effect those penalties have to be better low snap carter gets off the punt out across midfield and good field position for grimsley is that ball down at the 40-yard line so grimsley up by two scores a chance to start to salt this one away as they come back out for offense yeah i don't anticipate they're going to start going to that running game still so effective even with melton out continuing to grind it out and thompson stepped in amber police scores a touchdown last drive as well and it does look like though that melton is back out on the field a sideline on that last drive but his mark alluded to good to see 15 and white back in there for the whirlys he's been such a consistent playmaker tonight even though thompson was growing last drive was he going to be able to replicate what melton's been able to do here tonight who knows but we'll mean we're never going to find out now two hearts for melton on first down just so impressed by the depth of this grimsley club playmakers all over have to be really impressed with what the whirlies have done defensively without their five-star player travis shaw and it's been the adjustments that they've made as well too they kind of started to see what this offense for northwest guilford was doing and really settled in their own right made their adjustments sat underneath on passing routes and brought some pressure against that running game and also noted this vikings offense hasn't done much from about midway through the second quarter going forward four-man front for northwest guilford plenty of time for barnett now flushed those on the run and incomplete trying to hit melton out of the backfield nice coverage by the vikings you saw the protection up front as well there was a little bit of pressure that was applied by the vikings but nothing could get through burnett was able to sit back there and just survey and survey and survey and finally decided to get out move the pocket roll outside and find a receiver down the field melton couldn't bring it in but it's another example about how this offense just continued to get better and better and better as the game has gone on didn't result in the way that they wanted it to by picking up yards but still executed well enough to make the play on the football third down [Music] for the second time this half for the grimsley offense for anderson to maybe get involved here some movement up front appeared didn't make a call barnett wants to throw to the sideline he's got a man wide open this is albright the tight end streaking free and in to plus territory a pickup of 35 for nolan albright and another crescent ford first down and he was aligned on the same side as terrell anderson you see it here just survey you see anderson right there in the middle of screen brings all those dbs with him and albright was left all alone along the grimsley sideline great find and great play design albright three catches this season coming into play tonight already has two this evening as this is barnett shaking free barnett into the second level he gets toward the pylon and in a 29-yard rushing score the second of the night for barnett and grimsley with a three score advantage simplify the playbook for this offense a well drawn up play well executed results in six barnett just following his convoy of blockers down the field and off to a point he said you know what i'm just gonna finish this drive myself just like that this lead has burst open in the third quarter and now prego on for the extra point [Applause] that one no good missed it to the left so prego misses remains a 20 20-point lead and if you want to diagram the perfect start to a second half take a picture of what grimsley has done so far it can't get really all that much better chris i mean the way that they have attacked this half and come out and asserted their dominance on this football game has been impressive to say the least and hasn't just been running the football barnett's done a great job of sitting back in the pocket making accurate throws down the field and that's really what's been able to keep this defense for northwest guilford off balance that ability to throw the football down the field opens up those running lanes talk about the defense let's go back to the defense of grimsley and if you're looking for maybe another story line for this grimsley defense remember travis shaw the five-star prospect committed to the university of north carolina second highest rated player to ever come out of north carolina he hasn't played at all this season rehabbing all accounts are that he's going to be back soon but this is a grimsley defense mark that enters play tonight five consecutive games allowing 20 points or less sure they're getting it done on the offensive end but hard to win if you don't score and that's that's without travis shaw again think about where this defense would be if big number two is out there on the field as well in the middle of that defense dominating they have been spectacular so far this season a live ball that trickles out of bounds it'll be first down and 10 for northwest guilford around the 30-yard line it certainly feels that like this could be a must score situation here for northwest guilford absolutely it is because this this truly now is do or die time they've got to find a way to put that football in the box and get six if not seven points on the board if you're gonna compete for the rest of this football game and you're going to get yourself back into it it starts with this drive but more importantly it starts with this play i think when you get young teams they start thinking ahead too much and trying to get ahead of the game thinking what if we get tied up you got to worry about the play that's happening right now and that's the mindset that this team's got to have going forward it's about the next play not the next score just 22 yards for this northwest guilford offense here in the third quarter baloo wants to throw a little quick out bubble screen and stepping out of bounds after making the catch that time was bristol carter haven't talked a lot about the speed of bristol carter tonight mark we mentioned that he's committed to east carolina he'll play baseball for cliff godwin squad he runs a six sixty in baseball gets down the line pretty well that's kind of an empty statement but let me back it up for you six six sixty comparatively mike trout runs the 60 in six and a half seconds and the fastest player in the big leagues runs the 60 in 6.1 seconds so what i'm saying is carter's pretty fast uh yeah just a touch the mike trout kid's pretty good in his own right as well so we just talked about an all-around athlete not just on the football field but also down there on the baseball diamond as well trying to target carter there instead it was knocked away good defensive play by quran diablo the outside linebacker already has a couple big tackles this evening and now brings up a third down set on that route made a nice play on the football just tracked it in the air deflects it almost had a diving interception along that grimsley sideline too but the deflection works just as well and after the successful first down play down and completion and this offense is to have to get a first down here they absolutely have to move these chains and continue to build that confidence trips to the bottom of your screen and movement up front it's not the xfl you can't start before the ball snaps no there's no running start going the whole way about 15 yards behind the quarterback and getting a running start does not fly in the original game of football see coach wallace there is trying to get his offense back on the same page just some miscommunication that time again a young team just not finding a way to communicate and be on the same page all at once it's five more yards they have to now get to get that first down 35 penalty yards this quarter for northwest guilford and now maybe some sack yardage unless blue can make something happen somehow gets that one away it's incomplete trying to hit alex santaros made the catch but out of bounds it's fourth down i'll tell you what thompson about had himself another sack too bad back to back possessions where he would have had a sack on his name but blue to his credit finds a way to get out of that and just gets the ball down the field allow his guy to hopefully pick up some yards all for not now fourth and eleven you almost have to punt again don't you you almost have to because then you put yourself in real hole if you don't pick up the first down if you decide to go for it and the punt team will come on here for northwest guilford frustrating night for the sophomore quarterback [Music] especially when you think about how well it started as well [Music] you know this vikings team came out on fire and they looked like they were ready to play in this one but grimsley has stood tall since then i mean give grimsley a lot of credit for surviving the early haymakers weathering the storm nice kick might have been partially tipped it'll bounce out of bounds near midfield once again it was thompson wreaking havoc in the backfield and grimsley with terrific field position as they'll start near midfield [Music] again that pressure just coming up you can see carter just gasped and looking for answers as much of this northwest guilford team has done here in the second half they have found none this grimsley offense defense special teams the team as a whole has played a very complete brand of football since the second quarter how about the job that alonzo barnett the third that jmu commit has done so far tonight steps up here takes a deep shot down the field incomplete had a man open he couldn't quite connect there as he was looking to hit terrell anderson but back to the point the jmu commit and alonzo barnett coach darrell brown of grimsley said you know the game is really slowing down for him and that's been on display i think tonight yeah absolutely and it hasn't just been throwing the football the way he's been able to run it's been effective he's picked his spots when to run the football and that's what's really led to so to what has been so efficient about him when he does tuck it and run it's just about being selective and making the right decision at the right time and coach brown was not shy to us when he said you know we put a lot of pressure especially this year on the quarterback barnett the running back melton because they are two of the most experienced players on this grimsley offense as melton cuts it outside melton down the sideline and picks up another first and after another big run now a flag comes in is a little chirping in the second level [Applause] looks like northwest guilford might be still getting a little a little chip here the frustration again still setting in melton making another play just comes right back in the game and it's almost like he never missed a beat nothing ever happened it's a game a game of 32 but we'll sort out the flag those a little back and forth boys will be boys there yes 152 total yards this quarter now for grimsley but a personal foul will be called on either side a pair of dead ball fouls so those infractions are going to offset and the play will stand it's a crescent forward first down it's tough you know i think when you're when you are a young team and you know you saw how well you did play collectively it wasn't just offensively defensively they played really well in that first quarter and a half too but to see it kind of start to slip away and you know it was right there for the taking that's a tough pill to swallow especially when you're younger because you see the potential there you want to get there you want to be there right now just gotta understand to trust the process first and ten back to the ground for barnett who cuts it outside and is ushered out of bounds gain of six so we've seen the rpo on the other side for northwest guilford tonight now you're seeing a little bit of the read option some more option football that uh modern offenses have adopted for sure you look no further than the nfl the baltimore ravens lamar jackson running the show there just another example of that but just giving your quarterback the opportunity to read the defense survey the field and either keep it himself or hand it off to his back second and four this is melton straight ahead melton inside the ten and melton spun down near the five yard line another crescent forward first down and jaleel melton just powers his way into the second level again those runs that went for short yardage gains in the first half are now starting to add up they're taking a toll on this defensive northwest gill for the vikings not so sure up front and brimsley is taking advantage melton again straight ahead give him six more it's a hat trick for jaleel melton and grimsley storming in the third quarter out to a three score lead and then just a massive hole opened up in the middle of that defense brimsley is punishing the vikings up front at this point they are having their way with the front seven of northwest guilford to this point right now the vikings have no say in what goes on grimsley running the show another sunbelt reynolds touchdown for grimsley 180 yards here in the third quarter total offense for grimsley as prego on to try the extra point worley's having to run some personnel on late prego missed the last extra point try but cannot right the wrong he misses another so back-to-back p-a-t misses as we take another look at this sun belt reynolds touchdown i mean just look at the clearing the big guys up front opening a hole and that wasn't touched until he's about a yard deep in the end zone just a great job up front by opening the hole as great as melton has been tonight his front five have done a spectacular job of opening running lanes for him to go through and he's not getting touched until he's at least four or five yards down the field 21 carries 180 rushing yards for jaleel melton tonight touchdown runs of one yard five yards and six yards and he's just getting better it seems like as the game goes along that's not even including the impact he's had in the receiving game 61-yard reception absolutely so you gotta think this is a well-rounded player runs the ball well runs efficiently and he's got some dynamic ability to play in the passing game as well you got to think he's going to be a desired target for some of the college recruiting prospects in the area and i think that's an interesting point daryl brown said you know he's going to play at the next level he's a senior someone you know will take a shot on jaleel melton whether it's an athlete a running back a linebacker or whatever he is and coaches have talked to us about that this year the importance of being able to play a fall schedule to get more film for these guys to get a chance to get in front of college coaches after that abbreviated spring season and it was just such a small sample size that's such an awkward time of the year these kids are so used to playing in the fall that it's hard to kind of get a gauge on what kind of players some of them really are travis shaw is the shooting but you know what the ability that he has but when you look like when you look at julia melton you think well what can he do and you look at a game like this where on a regular schedule he has not just performed well he is shot in this one you start to get a better idea what these guys really bring to the table and for a guy like him who yeah he i can't imagine him not playing in the next level because maybe you don't have a specific role for him maybe he's a running back a linebacker whatever it may be an athlete as you said chris but kid can play football and that's going to be bigger on his recruiting prospects going forward than anything else if you have talent coaches will find you it doesn't matter where you're at after the first penalty of the third quarter on grimsley off the 35 yard line the vikings go back to work and that one dumped down to bristol carter we talked about his ability to run it's out across midfield there's a late flag there's some tussling behind the play as well and man things really getting chippy here [Applause] and folks coming off the player where the play was stopped and players escorted away certainly don't want to see any sort of ugliness impact what has been a really well played and quality football game to this point let's take another look you just had the frustration first to play bristol carter making a nice play here keeping the balance breaking and tackling working the sideline you see the two sport athlete making it happen yet again but just some frustrations boiling over it would appear for the vikings in northwest guilford elsewhere on the field and now the penalty i believe will be just assessed to northwest guilford here coach wallace obviously upset thinking that there should be some sort of infraction on the other side as well kevin wallace will chat with chris barker the referee and sticking up for his players certainly appreciate that and coach wallace has to be careful here as well you can see obviously we don't know what was what was said down in the field so it becomes a becomes a game of you know he said this and he said that but what's the old football saying they always catch the second player yeah absolutely just don't throw your hands up i say just don't bring attention to yourself and they'll see the first one they may not call it but if you're a responder and they're definitely going to throw that flag but to your point about coach wallace sticking up for his kids that's always going to resonate with them no matter what it is as long as you continue to fight for them regardless of what point in the game you're at they're going to remember that that makes you want to play for a coach it makes me want to play for a coaching staff coach wallace still pleading his case officials still trying to sort this one out but the preliminary indication was just the penalty against northwest guilford dead ball on sportsmanlike on northwest guilford and they're going to disqualify that player so the unsportsmanlike foul disqualified the player for northwest guilford which i believe was an interior lineman there's the player that has been disqualified just a one of those unfortunate circumstances but we play on here and i will say there is not a group better equipped than the officiating crew and the booking agents to adjudicate these situations and while everyone might disagree the guys in the striped shirts do have the best interest of the game and the players in mind right and there's not a group in my mind as one of the grimsley players is now ushered off the field that was jamal jarrett who is heading to the bench and you wonder if maybe jarrett was also disqualified from the contest as well the officials getting together but just to finish the point there is not a group that is better equipped to handle any sort of adjudication of high school athletics in general than the north carolina high school athletic association and the fine folks in chapel hill it's unfortunate as grimsley calls a timeout it's unfortunate that some believe that they there are other places and other people that are better equipped to enforce high school athletics but the fine folks in chapel hill have done a phenomenal job i think i will trust them more than i will trust anybody else who thinks they can do a better job i think i would second you in that partner it's a it's a tough job that i don't think people realize is it's it's tough man you know you got to really think about everything that they go through and it's it's not an easy job you're talking about a job where [Applause] you know you're gonna take some punishment and a lot of that comes in a verbal sense and it's you know it's it's relentless but these guys come out here every single week because they love what they do yep i mean the opportunity they have to make an impact on the community so after all that it's first down for northwest guilford cloud makes the catch and then is hit immediately pickup of eight [Music] cloud once again showcasing his ability as just a sophomore picks up eight yards on first down i hate to see this kid in two years shoot i'd hate to see him at the end of this year and going into next i mean the talent is just so obvious that what he can do and the fact that he can play both sides of the football as well remember he's a defensive back too just very impressive young man talking with coach wallace about his development said you know in the spring last year he learned how to be a wide receiver was learning leverage starting to get his legs underneath him in the spring i thought it was interesting that coach wallace said he doesn't like he's running a whole lot or running very fast but that's just because of how much of a kg wide receiver he is absolutely and a roughing the passer penalty is called as well so tack on a few extra yards to the end of that pass play to clap i think the the talent is obvious you see the potential it is right there i mean first of all the things you can't teach the size and the frame that he has but from there his understanding of route concepts the way he's been able to find some open spots and his grimsley defense has played pretty well for much of this game he's done a really good job baloo to throw down the field looking for carter incomplete devon ash in coverage that time for grimsley final 80 seconds of the third period he's trying to make a play get his wide receiver carter who's made so many nice plays you remember the first half chris the excellent fourth down catch that he had over one of the grimsley defenders you know he can go up and make a play just a little bit too far out of his reach that time [Applause] a score here at the end of the quarter things you never know for northwest guilford right second down another handoff this is cadet fights his way ahead for four yards brings up a second down and flag on the field as well looks like the official was trying to tighten things up here late in the third quarter after things got a little chippy trying to reign everything back in just the five yard face mask there it's been a eventful third quarter for the grimsley defensive one i think the officials have done a good job of that though tonight i think we've seen in several different occasions where this game could have gotten out of control emotionally between these teams and they've done an excellent job for the most part of corralling them and bringing them back in and settling these two teams back down just having them understand hey we're playing here to play football just the five yard face max we do still have the five yard face mask infraction in high school football so now brings up a short situation here baloo wants to throw quick out intercepted picked off again by this grimsley defense ushering aside a defender is anton shaw the strong safety shaw still on his feet with a convoy of blockers it's a house call for grimsley [Applause] what a play by shaw read it the entire way baloo telegraphed that thing the entire way down the field trying to get the ball to cloud again that time just stepping in that time shaw made a great play on the football worked the grimsley sideline and you said it best partner a convoy of blockers led him and followed him into the end zone 80 yards instincts that time reading the football in the air by shaw and then great instincts running the football back as well to finish that play it's an off an 85-yard interception return for a touchdown the second interception of the night for this grimsley defense renault is in front 46-14 it was a penalty on the play a dead ball foul against northwest guilford so the touchdown stands and now it looks like the whirlies are going to go for two remember they've missed a couple of extra points here in the third quarter just to make it a 34 point game handoff melton straight ahead and he's in for the two-point drop so melton who's had his way offensively punches in two more to make it a 48-14 game a little bit tougher of a run that time northwest guilford found a way to get some pressure in the middle of the field but milton just like he's done almost every other time tonight able to make a play keep his balance it looks like there's a late flag a little bit of laundry on the field again yeah things getting really chippy let's watch the two-point conversion again just got pressure got to the backfield the vikings did there were several red shirts back there but none of the way to stop milton from scoring fairly easily yet again looks like the dead ball foul went against grimsley now coach brown is upset [Music] and you wonder what his what is he upset about you wonder if someone said something is it maybe this game could be getting a little bit out of hand almost a little bit of both almost yeah it kind of seems like as far as the foul is concerned it almost feels like it can't be anything but some verbal back and forth some banter that's just crossing a line the officials throw that flag but i do think again as we've seen the game stretch on the officials have done a good job of really de-escalating a lot of the tension that this game has created now they need to make sure this is going to be the toughest part of it because you got a young team that's upset about how things have gone you got to make sure you are riling bringing them back in just having everyone understand we're here to play football it is a game of emotion so that can be tough sometimes especially when you're talking at the high school level these kids care nine combined penalties this quarter and to your point kids are playing for the name on the front of the jersey not so much the back here playing up for pride of your school certainly for a lot of these youngsters it will result in playing football at the next level for the vast majority though these four years you spend on this field will be the end of your football careers coach wallace not very happy personal foul by the way win against northwest guilford so there's also a foul on grimsley so i guess we have offsetting foul so the officials mark off both penalties only to resolve only to wind up in the same spot so all that for nothing a little bit of cardio get the legs moving a little bit back up and down the field it's been a last 10 minutes that has been full of laundry as many flags have been thrown tonight these officials might be going to their favorite dry cleaner tomorrow night the flags may have got a little bit of messy on this this nice grass field well kept as well another short kickoff on the arnold jones kickoff and more good field position there for northwest guilford a chance to run a few more offensive plays and just try to build some momentum here late in the third i think that's a really good way to put it chris because yes this game has gotten a little out of control you find yourself on the bad end of it but now you have a chance to execute and that's what the next 38 seconds of the third quarter and then the final 12 minutes of the fourth frame of this game are going to be about it's going to be about executing and working the ball getting within your offense and bettering yourself so when you go into next week's game you find yourself in a better and more comfortable position baloo will throw dumps it down to gadette the running back who just slips product of a cool night maybe some dudes settling in i think that's exactly it you've seen some of that really set down on the field and cadet was not able to make a an effective cut that time he had room to work too which is the disappointing part he knows it but maybe some of that dude just causing a slicker playing surface right now and looks like the vikings might be content to just take this to quarter number four a loss of two brings up a second down and long as the final ticket seconds tick-off of this third quarter it's a third stanza that was dominated by grimsley highlighted by an 85-yard interception return for a touchdown for anton smith grimsley has won 14 straight the state's second longest winning streak and they are 12 minutes away from a 15th straight victory the wurlies with a big lead when you come back to greensboro [Music] here is tonight's rhone law play of the game rhone law tried attorneys who are here to help it is this 85 yard interception return for a touchdown from anton shaw his first pick of the season just one of those plays where grimsley's been able to capitalize from midway through the second quarter on and all culminating with the 85-yard interception return for a touchdown it really effectively put this game now out of reach so start the fourth quarter northwest guilford gets it and another sack for this grimsley defense boy pick your tackler that time jordan watkins the senior was the first man through loss of seven i mean about looked like a twister ripping through a farmhouse there were so many whirlies rolling through there that time just into the backfield and watkins leading the charge that time another dominant performance just individually on that play this defense making noise and really affecting the way that this offense for northwest guilford has played in the last two quarters third down throwing here is baloo and skying up is bristol carter to make the catch but they'll say he yeah he caught it gained a 10 but he's still going to be shy of the mark still love the fight though we're seeing out of these vikings though they have not stopped competing regardless of what the score is and i think that's a pretty telling sign when you look at where they're at as a team entering this game 3-1 and outside that first loss to east forsyth to open up the season they won all their games pretty comfortably up to this point that's a good point though and coach kevin wallace telling us you know hey we're three and one everybody's patting you on the back won your first conference game but he said we could easily finish three and seven obviously things have not gone the way of the vikings here in the second half so if you're coach wallace and things continue on this trajectory how do you keep this game from impacting next week and then spiraling for three or four more weeks i think you make sure that this team has a short memory you say look there that you you take the good from what you did in this game you can point to the first quarter and a half say guys we outplayed a defending state champion regardless of how long how long you outplayed them you still outplayed a defending state champion you say there's some really good things that we did in this game we showed some mental toughness we showed some fortitude in what we were doing and we came out against a really good team and we punched them in the mouth first now the next step is taking that and seeing how they answer and making sure that they're not as effective going forward so you take the good from this game and there has been good for the north west guilford vikings certainly but that's got to be coaching points that they make going forward to make sure this team has a short memory otherwise after the turnover on downs short field for grimsley it's melton who pinballs off one of his offensive linemen pickup of six yards on first down melton certainly making a case for the player of the game tonight presented by the carolina classic fair tell you what if i'm forced between number 14 number 15 and white tonight you got a hard selection to make can we give co-player the games to the back just the entire backfield of grimsley i tell you what and one of the things that coach brown told us in our call this week he said you know we're not a dominant football team he said i think we are a good football team said he didn't believe that he's seen a dominant football team as melton again stretches ahead for a couple i think that grimsley is trending toward a dominant football team certainly not there yet things to clean up but you don't want to be peaking at the right at this time of the year either right and i think that's actually an interesting point though that he brings up because one like you're saying you don't want to be dominant right now you want to be dominant later on in the year when it really counts when you start to hit your peak at just the right time when the playoffs start rolling around the temperature dips even lower than where it's at right now but on top of that i think each of these teams is really starting to try to get used to being back on a normal schedule especially after the last almost two years now where they've had to be adjusting almost consistently now they've gotten back on a full schedule and now everyone's trying to get re-acclimated with what a regular season is like melton gets the call moves the chains another crescent forward of high point first down crescent court of high point we keep you rolling pickup of six fourteen beggar pick up a fourteen tell you what if there is any team though that is capable of becoming dominant it is it is these grizz grimsley worldies tell you what and we haven't talked a lot about it but with now no subdivision there's just four classes can you imagine this grimsley team against some of those other triad powers maybe some of those teams in the eastern part of the state too as melton gets another call melton still on his feet spinning his way and turning his legs now inside the five it'll be first and goal after a 17-yard pickup melton making a case for his fourth score of the night he got awful close that time again just shifting up field working the right side finding a hole up the middle and just bursting through see the patience right here working working and then working his blocks back inside you see 51 rourke in the middle of the field that time getting a block downfield giving melton a shot at the end zone and i'd be hard-pressed to think they're not going to give it to him here first and goal it's guess who melton trying the right side and stop for no gain maybe loss of a yard [Music] quick timeout as well maybe a player just a little slow to get up to flag flew shocker it's a hold against grimsley coincidentally won the few times that the vikings have been able to slice through that offensive line making play in the backfield as well well let's go back to the point though about grimsley being a dominant team and we saw a really good reagan team last week against a very talented east for scythe club we'll see west forsyth coming up here at the end of the season glenn is in the conversation these are all triad teams in 4a that could certainly make a case and i know we're forgetting some as well but i'm just really excited to see this caliber of football is melting straight ahead the penalty yards don't bother him he's down for another touchdown the fourth of the game for jaleel melton and an exclamation point for the whirlies [Applause] could my guy get an offer somewhere i mean he has been killing it tonight the bell cow for this offense has been toting it with effectiveness all night long breaking tackles showing speed and sudden burst and quickness in the open field catching the football everything you want your running back to do in the modern game of football jaleel melton has done here tonight and he has done it at an exceptional level now for the extra point that one right into your living room as prego drives it home as grimsley marches down the field and punctuates another scoring drive big number 15 jaleel melton 238 rushing yards tonight i hear you big fella have a night it's a big lead for grimsley [Music] [Music] so welcome back to billing stadium where grimsley is up 55-14 last week grimsley held a memorial game to honor those who were attended greensboro high school which was called grimsley now and they honor those who fought in world war ii and they have a field house dedicated for those who served in world war ii and they have all the names stitched for the 99 students who attended grimsley high school and they have helped auction off those jerseys to raise money to help fund that field house to keep the honor of those memories alive chris back to you all right hannah thanks yeah really incredible stuff that grimsley did last week auctioning off those jerseys of those 99 grimsly or now greensboro high school alumni who fought in world war ii want to renovate the field house and those jerseys are still being auctioned off you can reach out to the fine folks at the grimsley athletic department if you want to get in on that renovation project of the field house maybe purchase a jersey and talking with coach brown and that seems like it's going to be one of those traditions that continues now every year for the whirlies yeah what a fantastic tradition it really is you know you're honoring those who've come before you and who served our country as well also just a great cause trying to get this grimsley team who's so very deserving of some top-notch facilities throughout the state so an effort that all around benefits everybody just a great cause big lead for grimsley as northwest guilford gets the football for the first time in the fourth period over the middle bobbled and caught it's sarontos who makes the catch and still fighting out across midfield you love the fight from this northwest guilford club a pickup of 15 on a crescent ford first down again the positives that this coaching staff coach wallace and his guys can take from it it's the fight to continue to have the want to compete and it's plays like that that really filled that culture and really built on top of it cultivated hannah mentioned it earlier the pillars of this program grit attitude toughness kevin wallace said you know we're not going to hand our guys anything they're going to have to work for everything they they get now this is a program that's steeped in tradition we talked about the six straight years with winning seasons went six and two this past spring trying to continue to build this foundation and one of the things that kevin wallace talked about is even though this is a young group these players feel like they've got a chip on their shoulder they want to win a lot of these freshmen sophomore juniors came up through the middle school which is just across the street grimsley can see the middle school practice every single day these guys want to be northwest guildford vikings and they've won a lot of the youth level the popcorn or the peewee and that is going to eventually you feel like translate to the high school facility and you can't teach that that's the most important thing i think you get from that is that's something you can't teach having guys that want to come in and win that's the first step to greatness right there you got to have the want to compete the want to be great and then you can take the steps to getting there and a great pass by baloo down the field cloud with a huge catch inside the red zone [Applause] trent cloud who has been silenced for much of the second half with a huge gain a pickup of 41. just been waiting for them to hit on that all night long right i mean they've just never really taken that shot down the field except for a fourth down conversion they had in the first half now finds cloud deep down the field and just like that inside the tent first and goal baloo throws to the end zone another touchdown is cloud coming off his receiver and making the catch cloud in for the sixth time this season no quit in these vikings just like the grid of that drive he's not settling for anything not just running the clock to try to get out of here as fast as you possibly can just continuing to fight and fight and fight it's not going to come out with a win but those are plays in the in the grand scheme of things that you can look back on and say that's how we built a championship team here tip it now on for the extra point and that one splits the sticks northwest guilford having an answer a lot of fight left in the vikings as we come down the home stretch of our carolina classic fair friday night ride was presented by lone wall it's clown who shakes free his classic fair second to none in 2021 guess who it is jillian melton shakes free for this big 61-yard pitch and catch in the first quarter oh by the way he has scored four rushing touchdowns tonight there's his fourth just a moment ago big number 15 toting the mail a lot for this grimsley club tonight we'll talk about the player that's deserving of this award that's him had a little bit of competition with his quarterback alonzo barnett but just able to make too many plays on the field tonight he has been an absolute stud a star and on a team that has so many great players around it to be elevated on such a pedestal tonight is a real honor and just shows the skill level he has i think his night's done 28 rushes 238 yards four touchdowns two catches for 73 yards got the big gold chain two ho-hum just another night for the whirlys yep will be their 15th straight win they can get out of here in the last five and a half minutes foul was against grimsley there for a block in the back so now maybe you see coach brown sprinkle in some of his reserves you never know when you're going to need someone to step up and a chance to continue to build some depth next man up mentality make sure the guy that is behind your starters or the guys that sit behind them are ready to go they've got to be prepared in any situation to come in and play football as if they are a starter this is a great teaching opportunity for this grimsley team as well andrew atmore in the game now at quarterback as this one straight ahead to to carry in maynard who had a touchdown run earlier in the ball game go get out for a gain of 11 and another crescent forward first down this is a grimsley club as we mentioned so far this year already tonight won the state championship last spring one of four state titles the whirlies have captured in 1990 1956 and 1954 which you can tell there they've never won back-to-back state titles obviously will be a tougher road to navigate this year with just the four classifications but have to like this grimsley club as they start to get deeper into conference play western guilford next week ragsdale back-to-back home games maynard to the outside two flags are in this one's going to come back but a nice run by maynard a lot to like about daryl brown's club yeah and you start to see some of the depth there as it's a hold on the offense so we'll come back you see it here but maynard another one of those backups is going to provide that depth a nice change of pace too when you think about what melton brings to the table it's that power running straight ahead downhill the maynard's the change of base you see a little bit of that scat back skill set out of him working his way outside turning the corner and getting a big chunk of yards but again brought back by the hold so but good depth all over this team there is talent evident throughout the roster at grimsley you saw that rye smile from coach brown a moment ago gonna be happy to get out of here with the win gonna be happy i think overall with how his team played but certainly will be some coachable moments in film study tomorrow or monday when the whirlys regroup absolutely you know there's never going to be a perfect game right no team ever plays a perfect game the coaching staffs will find areas to work on and grimsley to that point still has a number of them to work on you got to think about how slowly they started the game with penalties mounting up on top of them and really getting in their way of doing much of anything that's one coaching point as well so i'm sure they'll find some other areas as well to work on but when you look at game play outside of that first drive or so they've just done an excellent job in all three phases of the game here tonight now if you're northwest guilford mark you played a really competitive first half there have been some highlights in the second half but i imagine the word for coach wallace would probably be finish what he's going to tell his team and perhaps you equate it a young football program but perhaps you equate it to as a flag is down on the run as maybe a child you have to crawl before you can walk and walk before you can run perhaps this is the the building blocks of this northwest guilford and i think to that to that point right you could show that last drive just take them into the film room and you can almost start with the last drive they have where they scored and take that and say guys this right here shows why we can be great because you continue to fight doesn't matter what the score is you continue to fight and you're still able to move the ball against the defense that we've had struggles against that night you could use that and that could be something for a young team you can galvanize them with that you can bring them together that's something that you can really use as motivation as fuel to the fire like this is a northwest guilford club it's got the talent we talk about the depth at the skill positions defense still playing hard as evident here but you look at guys like tanner baloo and trent cloud xavier simmons will obviously depart but you've got like guys like bristol carter only a junior the offensive line still very young i mean the pieces are there for this northwest guilford team to be a club that's going to compete year in and year out well and i think this game realistically is what we know and what could be when you look on both sides of the field grimsley is what we know grimsley is a powerhouse within the state of north carolina but northwest guilford is finding their footing as they're growing up and they're becoming more competitive they've got guys going to college major colleges so you know the skill set is there and the culture is there as well it's just going to be about cultivating that and continue to push forward and the ball on the ground here i think northwest guilford might have scooped it up things perhaps getting a little sloppy here for grimsley dylan kesseling the middle linebacker who we mentioned earlier going to play college lacrosse catawba with the fumble recovery a two-time all-conference selection and you know we talk about building culture and having building blocks still playing hard when the scoreboard not in your favor is the way you develop some of that depth in that culture it's where in your mind you just turn off whatever the score is and you just continue to play hammer away because you you never know you're trying and you're pushing here and you're trying to make that push that can benefit you down the road you're in a close game let's say you just got to close it out that's a chance where you got to fight you might face odds you don't like if you continue to fight you can find ways to still win football games another first down here for northwest guilford a pickup of 14 yards it was sorrantos who makes the catch another crescent forward first down under three minutes to go here at billing stadium and a lot of that for tanner ballou is the leader of this offense the quarterback just having that will to continue to fight and you keep going further another interception here for this grimsley defense it's tobin dunning who comes with the big interception it's the third interception of the night for this grimsley defense [Applause] just more growing pains just comes out to the right side too fast the ball is actually tipped it might have gotten there it looked like it was tipped to the line of scrimmage so good job by the big guys up front along the defensive front make a play in right place right time for tobin dunning and now probably we'll just see grimsley with two and a half minutes left salt this one away don't forget we're back with you next week on moment arises where they've got to be thrust into action just building that confidence and allowing them to get some playing time get some burn down there on the field where they have dominated for the early stages of this third quarter grimsley up by seven at the break came out scored a touchdown to start the third quarter got a stop scored another touchdown and the whirlies have been in the
