[Music] today from arrowhead stadium it's the cleveland browns versus the kansas city chiefs brought to you by budweiser proud sponsor of the us olympic team this buzz for you by mazda bringing performance and value together that's the mazda way and by goodyear certified auto service nobody fits you like goodyear [Music] mostly cloudy skies but temperatures in the 70s there is a wind that could be a factor today as we welcome you to arrowhead stadium in kansas city the chiefs play host to the cleveland browns gary gerald along with 13-year nfl veteran reggie rucker happy to welcome you to opening day 1988 always a special air of anticipation and excitement in a contrast in winning streaks on opening day the chiefs who have the longest victory streak on opening day in the nfl with five consecutive wins against the browns who are favored to get to the super bowl but yet who have lost on opening day the last five years frank ganz the head coach of the kansas city chiefs exhorting his troops will be receiving the football momentarily hoping to rebound after a tough 1987 when they went four and 11 coming off a playoff year and marty schottenheimer whose troops have come so close to the super bowl the last two years hoping to be in joe robbie stadium in miami come january of next 1989. this should be a good one today both have good preseason records the browns at three and one kansas city at two one and one james saxon ivonne jenkins larry moriarty expected to be in the deep spots for kansas city as lee johnson puts the ball on the 35-yard line a crowd of better than 50 000 on hand at spacious arrowhead coming to their feet in anticipation of the season opening kickoff for 1988. and i can promise you there are butterflies for every football player on that field but they'll soon end gary once that ball is kicked and you take that first hit these are two football teams going in different directions the cleveland browns obviously think that they can play in super bowl 23 and of course the kansas city chiefs are just looking to be respectable in 1988. getting ready to tee it up taking just a little bit longer the gusting swirly wins and you can see that harper is going to actually hold the ball on the tee for johnson as we get ready to get this one underway in kansas city so here we go the 88 campaign is underway high and deep and no opportunity for a run back by kevin jenkins they'll bring it out to the 20-yard line it's our pleasure to welcome those of you who are watching miami and chicago today and season opening action to arrowhead stadium as we take a look at the chief's starting lineup bill kenny now firmly the starting quarterback frank ganz has a rookie running back in james saxon and paul palmer a second year man starting in the backfield because of injuries to christian nicoya and herman heard paige carson veteran receivers and alfredo roberts a rookie who made the starting lineup today and here's your offensive line byron ingram is a first year starter and the chiefs are missing one key man mark addicts who is out for several weeks yet because of an injury the chiefs don't want to call any plays because they released some balloons here just a few minutes ago and the balloons are distracting the players they're all over the place and some of them are virtually eye level or worse they swirled in the winds here now you can see that they began to filter up and away from the stadium and so just another hesitation before the first play that's a good move by bill kenny because if he had a pass play called you can imagine what it would be like trying to put the football in the air with those balloons swirling about kenny looking things over and still doing a little directing here they want to make sure there are still a handful of balloons at the opposite end of the field that are just now starting to get away from the boxes and up into the air against pacing on the sideline and now we're ready to do it first play from scrimmage for the kansas city chiefs won only four ball games last year the pitch out comes to palmer and palmer is met and met emphatically by mike johnson johnson playing the left-hand side linebacking spot as we'll check the starting defensive alignment for the browns golic nose tackle and a good one big daddy hairston and clancy are the defensive ends the linebacking core we mentioned that junket is now a starter in place of eddie johnson dave grayson who had a great pre-season along with the pass rusher matthews and mike johnson and the defensive secondary minifield and dixon are the keystones here a couple of pro bowlers and they are good there is a rookie brian washington along with felix wright second down now for kansas city just underway from arrowhead stadium and he wanted to throw under pressure from hairston completes the pass at the 25-yard line at stephon page but the key there reggie was the fact that there was pressure coming from the browns and kenny had to get rid of it quickly bill kenny checked off at the line of scrimmage he saw the defensive look and felt the browns were in a blitz call and got rid of the ball very quickly but you saw an example of the brown's suffocating defensive style of play paul palmer comes to the sidelines and the chiefs will now go with four wide receivers in a third down situation we looked at kenny's stats for last year pass protection is a key here gary excuse me and giving bill kenny the time to throw the football the browns would be coming here watch matthews harry was the man in motion and now the pass goes to the neal harry you can't hang out at the 28-yard line so the chiefs missed the opportunity there as kenny tried to flip it out on the left side to emil harry couldn't hang on and as he comes back to the sideline the punting unit comes on to the field it'll be kelly goodburn second-year player who will be handling the punting chores this season for the chiefs gerald mcneil who can be extremely exciting as brown's fans will know the cube all 142 pounds of him standing back at the 32-yard line awaiting the punt there's a problem with kicking the ball into a win like this you have to watch the nose of the football if it's down mcneil has to go forward if it's up like that he goes back mcneal retreats to the 26 and here he goes across the 35 and he has pulled down at about the 36 yard line so the browns will get the football for the first time today after a 48-yard punt and a 10-yard return we have no score we're just underway at kansas city somewhere right now there's a clean [Music] budweiser with your name on it introducing a high performance luxury sedan made the mazda way high performance luxury sedans traditionally ask you to pay a pretty dear price well that's not the mazda way mazda's all-new 929 has world-class luxury appointments it's amazingly quiet solid riding and actually outperforms those guys now there's less standing between you and a car this good about eight thousand dollars less [Music] introducing the perfect tire for everyone it does everything for every driver is it safe in the rain well it's you know can it handle at high speeds you mean fast carry heavy loads how heavy can i afford it there's no one perfect tire for everyone so goodyear makes different tires for every driver car and condition on the american road including the perfect tire for you [Music] they're coming up to the line right now well as they come up to the line the cleveland browns getting ready to take the football for the first time always exciting on opening day reggie a pleasure to be working with you once again this season we'll be working with you and you're you're going to be leaving for seoul korean i'm sort that comes up tomorrow we'll be on the way and a chance to talk about that later on right now those are on first down firing long the intended receiver was reggie langhorne on the near sideline kevin ross was the defensive back who was back there let's check the lineup now kozar has the big backs byner and mack who had some truly great numbers a couple of years ago yardage y slaughter langhorne the veteran tight end ozzie newsome as the primary receivers it is a big offensive line the average better than 280 pounds farron williams riccosi replaces the just traded like bad bike and rising second down now for cleveland they're working just short of their own 39 make it the 38-yard line [Music] handoff goes inside matt finds a hole turning toward midfield gets across the 45 to about the 47-yard line working on the right side of the line duron cherry with the tackle leonard griffin bill moss and mike bell are the down lineman for frank gantz and the chiefs the mind backing core is a little suspect for kansas city this year we'll take a look at the starters in that particular area jack del rio aaron pearson dino hackett tough hitter along with tim cofield and then they're secondary on a par of the one of the browns with lewis ross burris and cherry you've got some pro bowlers in that group right there we've got the best defensive secondaries without question in the national football league playing both sides of the field today third down a yard needed for the cleveland browns their first possession handoff inside the mac penalty markers down he has the yardages he gets the midfield for the first down but again let's see whether or not the fraction infraction goes against kansas city or cleveland looks like the primary call or preliminary call goes against the chiefs bill moss making the tackle a referee today is jim tunney defense nose guard five yards penalty is accepted first down so the penalty moves the ball into kansas city territory at the 47 yard line let's check the ticker in the early game chicago just really handling miami today san francisco hanging on to beat new orleans in a big show down there in the nfc showdown on the first weekend hard to believe but true pittsburgh a winner over dallas folks in steel city are happy cincinnati over phoenix spoiling the debut of the cards in arizona and the rams all over the green bay packers more scores in just a moment right now first down coming up for the cleveland browns handoff goes to matt once again and this time nowhere to work coming up quickly to make the tackle was dino hackett number 56 a third year player out of appalachian state now when you look at the cleveland browns what you're seeing as you continue to look at the 10-minute ticker you're seeing one of the most balanced teams in pro football the browns have the ability to run the football and then kozar is a master at getting the ball to a lot of different people on offense that much that makes it very difficult for kansas city to defend this team second down at ten ball still at the 47-yard line in kansas city territory cleveland's first possession of the afternoon and of a brand new season [Music] on count by kozar four-man rush and he has protection now steps up in the pocket being chased and dragged down from behind tim cofield was there to make the tackle bernie had some time apparently couldn't find anybody open and then as he stepped forward on the pocket cofield was able to drag him down [Music] tim cofield from tiny elizabeth city state college very good on the outside rush watch number 54 on the right side of your screen very strong as he gets rid of larry williams with his hands and drags kosar to the turf one of the keys defensively for the kansas city chiefs is going to be able to be able to apply that kind of pressure on kozar all day passing situation now for rosaria on the browns at the midfield strike third and 13. those are under pressure fires and completes the pass and then the ball gets away webster slaughter it's picked up by hackett but i believe a whistle had blown kevin ross with a pop that time to jar the ball loose a little unhappy because it's not a chief's possession but it may be shortly as the defense holds and gets a nice ovation here from the partisan fans at arrowhead and we'll take another look very good defensive series by kansas city you saw the pressure earlier and the excellent coverage there by number 31 kevin ross who was right with webster slaughter as he ran the inside route ball is mishandled by johnson who spins away from one man kicks on the run it's a poor kick but it takes a fairly decent bounce and now takes a good bounce and goes down in fact inside the 20 inside the 10 and is going to roll dead in the vicinity of the six yard line johnson who is staring adversity right in the face manages to come up smelling like a rose and a big break for johnson and the browns absolutely incredible play by lee johnson a man who was under a great deal of stress throughout the training camp period marty scheinheimer had brought in a lot of kickers to take this job away from lee johnson and the barefooted kicker as you watch this play here what's the job he does now he's going to drop the football that's his fault now fortunately he is able to pick the ball up and he knows that you can still kick the ball at any time and what a kick he gets that ball just under todd howard and then the ball takes a cleveland browns bounce toward the kansas city chiefs goal line outstanding job by lee johnson it ends up being 39 yards rolls dead at the six yard line in kansas city will go to work now and look at johnson he's able to smile about it as well he should in this situation but he's got to be concerned you wonder if that's just a case of opening day jitters when he was not able to handle that snap [Applause] adam lingard just nearly acquired for kansas city handles the deep snapping role there and for the cleveland browns it is frank winters who handles the deep snap responsibilities [Applause] usually you can establish the personality of a game gary if you start defensively and you start well now kansas city the cleveland browns had the football in good field position right around midfield and kansas city established something there by applying the pressure to kozar and that is the only way you can derail this cleveland browns offense is you must make kozar hurry the football i mention at the top as we came in that one of the major concerns for kansas city coming into this ball game today is the fact that they're real their experience and their strength in the backfield is injured christian okoya who had a great rookie season and then herman heard a couple of big power backs unable to play because of injuries today so there's a little extra pressure on palmer he has the football right now as he tries to get out close to the nine-yard line working the left side and also a rookie running back james saxon at that time was in motion out to the left a reminder to our viewers that we'll be selecting the budweiser most valuable player for today's game at the conclusion of the contest okay let's take a look at what kansas city needs to do if they've got a chance to win this ballgame kenny must use the tight ends and running backs in the passing games because you know cleveland is going to shut down the offensive outside people and the offensive line must recognize the different blitzes of the cleveland browns anticipating a blitzer is pressured it's a running play all the way and palmer thrown for perhaps a yard loss and kenny is not happy in the backfield right now okay you alluded to the fact that they don't have okoya akoya the fullback who is on the engine reserve is 250 some pounds and he runs a 4-5 now they won't be able to run the football successfully inside on the cleveland browns because paul palmer on the other hand is nine 180 pounds so the browns in order to stop the chiefs well they got to stop that outside running game palmer is a breakaway back and the defense also must neutralize carlos carson the outstanding pro bowl wide receiver he is the big play man number 88 he's paired up against andrew dixon right now from the eight yard line third on eight inside handoff this is the rookie saxon with a bit of room breaks one tackle gets out to the 20 to the 21-yard line in the first down well that's an impressive debut for the rookie 13 yards on the carry james saxon out of san jose state 511 215 pounds and you know he's a happy young man right now and that's what we're talking about gary stopping that outside play if the chiefs are going to run outside and off tackle number 21 on the right of your screen james saxon the rookie picking up the running room very nicely some good blocks breaks a couple of tackles this is a rookie who plays like a veteran well just across the 20-yard line first down on the first first down of the afternoon for the kansas city chiefs no score early in this one in the first quarter kenny with protection fires and out of the arms of the rookie tight end alfredo roberts who stretched out full length but couldn't hang up there was pressure that time defensively on the receiver from mike johnson and there was also pressure inside on kenny as he released the football bill kenny has been here 10 years and for most of that time he has been in a quarterback battle with todd blackledge now they traded todd blacklist to the pittsburgh steelers during the off-season and they brought steve deberg in but they told the berg look this isn't the quarterback derby l kenny is our man so this is the first time in a long time where kenny has had the security of his job second down now for the chiefs wanting to put the ball in the air he does so the saxon saxon good receiver spins away from one man and he gets out across the 25 to the 27-yard line sam planchey finally bowled him down but saxon on two occasions now has managed to break tackles good strong runner the chiefs don't appear to be in awe of the cleveland browns right now as you watch this play coming right at you number nine bill kenny out to saxon saxon catches the ball well i talked to offensive coordinator coordinator george sick and he said that saxon is a outstanding receiver for a rookie out of the backfield was brian washington who missed the initial hits and had a chance to have to tackle the rookie defender for the browns neil harry the motion man kenny under pressure steps up completes the pass to kickford taylor across the 30 to about the 33-yard line maybe enough for the first down kentrick taylor first year player out of washington state gets his first reception and he has the first down for the chiefs that's what we talk about when we say inside receivers and pro football offenses today you take the tight end out you'll put a wide receiver in that's george sessic who is the architect of this offense the kansas city chiefs need to find some other people to throw the ball to other than carson and page if they do that they have a good chance of moving the football successfully pitch out comes to palmer trying to work the right side gets the block across the 40. penalty marker however is down bumped out of bounds at the 45-yard line but this one is going to work against kansas city preliminary indication of a hold against the chiefs flag back at the 29-yard line [Applause] oh jim tony explaining the options 21 offense 10 yards still first down [Applause] so this one will move it back and it'll give us a chance to update some scores on the 10-minute ticker the jets with a field goal now over new england seattle and denver are still scoreless in the first check the other late games no score between the san diego's and the raiders and of course houston and indianapolis also playing today no score here at arrowhead kansas city and cleveland [Music] first down long yardage now after the holding penalty against the chiefs inside the 25-yard line kenny flips it out here on the near side this is roberts across the 30. big man bumped out about at about the 36 yard line alfredo roberts who caught six balls in the preseason including one for a touchdown gets his first reception in the regular season the chiefs have an outstanding game plan i can tell you that right now they know the strength of the cleveland defense they are doing exactly what they need to do to move this football they're hitting the inside receivers they're hitting the tight end and they're getting outside even though they had a penalty on that last run by palmer you could see that they want to get outside and use palmer speed the browns are going to have to tighten up their defense or kansas city is going to move this ball today second down on eight for the chiefs we're scoreless in the first quarter in kansas city miss kenny hands off to palmer works the left side tough yardage not much working at all that time as bob dolek is there to make the tackle we're going to go to new york now on nfl live gail gardner is standing by with this update gail at riverfront stadium the bengals ruined the debut of the phoenix cards big day for boomer science and 15-yard touchdown pass to mike martin his third of the day as the bengals beat the cards 21-14 let's go back to kansas city so a tough start for the cardinals a big start for the bengals as they win their opener no score between kansas city and cleveland third and six now with four wide receivers on the field for the jeeps pinned out of the shotgun with time now flips it out here and nobody there taylor was in the vicinity as was stefan page and emile harry but the ball was right between the three receivers pressure from golic and harrison who had a pretty good push up the middle that time kenny had to unload perhaps a little quicker than he had hoped so kelly goodburn comes on for his second punch of the day first one as you see went 49 yards gerald mcneil standing back here at about the 22 or 23 yard line 5 40 to play first quarter no score chiefs and the browns is good from the stands at his 23-yard line waiting to snap mcneal takes a look at a big bounce that goes out of bounds and the ball will be put in play back at the 27-28 yard line and cleveland will try once again after a 35-yard good good burn punt we have no score with 5 33 to play in the first quarter from kansas city the jones family reunion won't be quite the same this year and where are those otherwise reliable joneses at mcdonald's for the chicken mcnuggets fiesta they've come from far and wide to enjoy our three new chicken mcnuggets fiesta sauces and collect and learn about real south of the border coins so if you're planning to get together you might plan on waiting till the fiesta ends [Music] [Applause] let's take a little ride in a road car from mazda i think you're gonna be surprised it's got all the right hardware no surprise there electronic fuel injection overhead cam engine four-wheel independent suspension it even has the best warranty on its glass guess what it's the mazda323 a road car that also happens to be today's best value in a small family sedan i like surprises like this [Music] excuse me mr palmer about this arnie's caddy giveaway pennzoil's giving away 50 new 89 cattle accident devilles i just mail in entry forms from quality pennzoil wow arnie's caddy giveaway enter today new tegrin medicated shampoo with conditioners is tough on dandruff i like new chagrin with conditioners because it leaves my hair looking great oh yeah yeah new tegrin with conditioners proves tough can be beautiful [Music] we're back at kansas city's arrowhead stadium we're looking at bernie kozar the quarterback and the architect of the offense for the cleveland browns and an amazing young man he is with the emphasis on young seems like he's already an established nfl veteran however randy rucker has started three years already but yet he is still the youngest starting quarterback in the national football league brown's at their own 28-yard line out of the i formation setbacks now langhorne is wide to the right until the near side is slaughtered handoff goes to the second man buying him straight ahead for a couple of yards ernest byner at 215 500. the grandstand for in the grand scheme all they've got is all in all here a rather respectified offense they like to get the ball to a lot of different people the defense cannot key on an offense that uses that kind of philosophy and when you do that and cozar does it as well as anybody else you can move the ball at will at times after a pickup of a couple on the first play it is second down now as kozar takes a look and sets his ball club brian brennan now on the slot on the near side of the field this is the notable ozark backpedaling against the four-man rush steps out of the pocket they flushed and penalty marker is down kozar keeping the football and is bumped out of bounds at the 31-yard line good pressure that time from kansas city and apparently good coverage downfield i think what the cleveland browns are finding out about the kansas city chiefs at is that those defensive backs in the secondary is as good as they've ever played against and they aren't getting open the way kozar wants them to that's what you call a coverage sack the coverage downfield was so good it allowed the chief's defensive line to get to bernie kozar omash and mike bell talking over the options billy used his hands number 74 offense 10 yards still second down and as indicated the penalty works against cleveland and that steps them back cleveland in their last preseason game the victory over the new york giants they were really hammered with penalties a week ago all right let's watch kozar number 19. and i think on the left of your screen number 74 paul faron who has missed the last two preseason games and this is his first game back maybe a little rusted got flagged for the holding penalty there as kozar gets pushed out of bounds and that moves the ball back to the 20-yard line make it second down around 18 though for the cleveland bro how's he news once now runs toward the sideline and has to ground the ball oh we got a little contact going here between lewis immediately in webster slaughter well i knew this would happen we talked about this yesterday and now production meeting that i knew that there would be a fight between either slaughter and lewis or slaughter and roster let me explain why that isn't intentional grounding the rules this year let's take a look at this first of all that's 84 slaughter and lewis they're going to get into it let's see who throws the first shot this is just jock in four position this is intimidation football folks we're gonna get into why that wasn't intentional grounding in a minute all right right now it's third down and we've got a delay here on the line the last play in which kozar got rid of the ball epitomizes why this young man is so smart and we'll get back to it when we come back still no score in kansas city i don't know where to start telling you about mazda trucks they've been rated first in customer satisfaction two years in a row they got the best warranty in the truck business it covers your bumper to bumper this 40 new se5 comes with everything you're looking at and it's still priced close to toyota nissan's base trucks so i don't know where you start i guess it doesn't make any difference you wind up here most of my friends don't know what they're going to do after graduation but i've already locked in guaranteed skill training in the army qualify now and you can reserve even the army's most sought-after technical training up to 12 months in advance through the army's delayed entry program sure being a soldier won't be easy but then nothing worth having ever is [Music] health club can you tell moose of my hair tanning salon every thursday whatever kind of food i'm eating that's the kind of beer i'm drinking come brendo when you're done kidding around heineken into the land of heartburn comes the first liquid antacid without that liquid antacid taste a really good tasting liquid that puts out heartburn's fire new tums liquid it works it really tastes good next sunday the nfl plays here when the steelers battle the redskins before your team takes the field our team hits the air nfl live okay let's get back to why that wasn't intentional grounding the rules this year state that the quarterback may get rid of the football if he isn't under sufficient pressure now there's no one imminently about to sack kozar so he throws the football away they don't they do not consider that sufficient pressure third down four wide receivers those are uptight under center this is the notable they're coming keep showing blitz bell breaks across the line we've got penalty markers all over the place and kozar has dragged down at the 16-yard line it was a lot of movement in the lines that time as the jeeps were showing full blitz kozar apparently went to an audible and some confusion let's see which way this goes gonna work against kansas city and you see the reaction to mike bell was not happy with that call and the reaction also of jim tunney who's telling mike bell why he's wrong well gary i expect this to happen a lot today because kozar is very good at drawing the opposition offside offside number 99 defense filter down [Applause] so the browns get five yards back let's take another look now there's bell on the top of your screen top right you can see he's he's offsides by a couple of counts paul moved up to the 25 just across the 25-yard line with four and a half minutes to go first quarter no score still third down rounds need 12. again the chiefs are showing a lot of men up front but it's only a four-man rush against kozar who has time flips it out here and completes the pass to slaughter at the 43-yard line dragged down for 44. kevin ross with the tackle as webster slaughter picks up the first down on a 19-yard pickup kozar threw the football before slaughter turn you cannot have a perfect pattern i mean you cannot throw a better pattern than this now watch the ball is on its way the ball is in the air folks he turns around the ball is right there you can't do that unless you practice it many many many times during the week and these two kozar and slaughter do it as well as anyone and that's against the mighty fine defender and kevin ross who is kind of the unsung hero of the kansas city defensive secondary on the 44 yard line first down handoff goes to miner miner struggling for a yard or so may have gotten across the 45-yard line and a chance to update scores 3-3 now as new england has answered back with a field goal against the jets still no score between seattle and denver jack del rio first quarter scores also with indianapolis now out on top hoga boom with a touchdown pass to matt 23 yards for that score san diego and the raiders are scoreless as is our ball game here in kansas city between the chiefs and the browns cleveland after going backwards now looking at a second and nine as they move toward midfield at the 46 yard line in their own territory slaughter the near side this time you've got byner in motion handoff goes to max straight ahead with a pretty good hole picks up a quick five to about the 49-yard line as he crosses the midfield strike gregory crosey and dan fike helping lead the way up front dino hackett with the tackle so far the chief's success has been tied into two things defense much pressure to cozar in order to stay in this football game they've done a wonderful job of that and then the linebackers must contain bonner now the browns haven't tried to get the ball to find her yet but when this offense unfolds as it will on this drive the browns will definitely try to throw the ball to ernest spiner and it will be up to the chiefs linebackers to contain finer number 44. one of the best in the business of coming out of the backfield jeeps have brought in five defensive backs now byner steps right up alongside kozar in tight with a quick retreat fires completes the pass i believe and knocked away no it's an incompleted pass in and out of the grasp of langhorne the chiefs hoping that it was a live football albert lewis with the pop that's a catchable pass and i think cozart puts the ball right where you want it if you're running an inside pattern you want the ball down low so you have an opportunity to catch it and don't take a big hit but langhorne didn't catch the ball i tell you the chiefs are doing some outstanding things defensively first of all the reason why the browns can't get better into the game is because the chiefs keep threatening a blitz look making byner come up into the line gary lee johnson handles this snap and gets off the kick bare footer gets it up there hangs it high kitchen taylor with no opportunity for a run back and it bounces out of bounds inside the 10-yard line looked like it may have been down tighter than that but then it took a bounce right out to the side 38 yards on the butt when we come back kansas city will be trying to break a scoreless deadlock when i talked about how we deal with our customers um or any customer i'd have i you get to know them personally and eventually it becomes a relationship where they're not just abc company they're people they know that i got all these products and these different things here i'm sure that you didn't realize that they were coming in yeah no cover charge a week full-size washer dryers i'm going to take care of you when you take away that'll outrun the top of the line onto prelude and still run you a cool 2 grand less believe me you don't have to drive it this hard to love it you just have to drive it [Music] an american tradition continues they captured the division title last year in dramatic fashion sweeping the toronto blue jays on the final weekend of the regular season next saturday the pennant race swings into high gear as the tigers meet the yankees or the cubs face the cardinals the tradition is here the memories are waiting first down from the 11-yard line for the chiefs no score in the football game as the rookie saxon now scrambles back to the left trying to make something happen and gets out close to the 15-yard a little improvisation that time on the part of james saxon [Applause] one of the matchups we're following is that of pro bowl nose tackle bob golick number 79 right in the center of your screen you see golic right there neutralized right at the line of scrimmage to block by number 60 byron ingram a first year player who does a fine job of tying up the pro bowler after a pickup of five yards second down now for the chiefs mentioned pro bowlers i believe there are a total of 16 men on the field today between the two teams with pro bowl experience palmer second year mag pulls in this pass at the 20-yard line and is wrestled down david grayson there to make the stop that'll be very close to a first down this is an extremely difficult kind of offense to run gary because you have to be very patient there aren't going to be a lot of big plays against the cleveland browns you have to almost take what the browns will give you and many times that means a lot of short passes you're watching steve deberg who came over from tampa bay and who has come over from a lot of teams for that matter steve burke a journeyman quarterback right of course for san francisco for denver and tampa bay before coming here it's between kenny and de berg you've got good balance in the quarterback department but frank gans has been emphatic all through the preseason he said that kenny is his number one quarterback gans has instituted new offensive and defensive schemes and he has george sepsic as we mentioned in as the offensive coordinator and brought in rob rust and tom bennis got a chance to talk about that this afternoon and a whole new look for the chiefs this year saxon tries to go for the first down and i'm not sure he got it that's close when you get a stack up like that at the line of scrimmage you know two things happened the nose tackle neutralized the center and those two inside backers schunken and johnson did their job let's watch it right in the middle of the field [Applause] okay watch 54 mike junkin in 59 mike johnson see the penetration they get johnson is right in under the ball carrier and he stops the ball carry before the ball carry has a chance to make a jump right in the center of the line outstanding defensive play well they brought the change in they've determined that it's fourth down as marty schottenheimer takes a look from across the way talking with uh i mean that's the way you draw it up on the board gary i mean you can't get any better than that defensive play inside junkin who of course has been under a lot of pressure to perform he was the number one draft choice a year ago didn't play took over incumbent eddie johnson spotted inside linebacker and did a fine job stopping the chiefs there kelly but goodburn standing back at the five yard line where he will try to get the punt away and gerald mcneil standing back in cleveland territory to 38 anticipating the kick this one angle for the sidelines and gets just across midfield and goes out of bounds so good burn didn't get the long distance they line it up and it's going to be very close to midfield good burn who had a 49-yarder to start the day not getting the yardage that he wanted there only 30 yards and cleveland will have the football when we come back 29 seconds remain in the first quarter the acura legend sedan offers such amenities as leather trimmed interior sophisticated stereo system and ergonomically designed controls is it any wonder people enjoy sitting in it and with its 24-valve 2.7 liter v6 is it any wonder they enjoy standing on it the legends sedan precision crafted performance [Music] when you need tools any kind of tools for every kind of job one name gives you more good choices than any other craftsman when you ride the redline you need new world-class javelin superior grade the performance proven motor oil that keeps your engine cleaner and delivers superior heat stress protection new hamlin superior grade cool under fire once again back in kansas city gary gerald along with reggie rucker it's been a scoreless first quarter and only 29 seconds remain in this quarter as the browns get ready to go to work just short of midfield after a short uh good burn cut of only 30 yards his third punt of the afternoon i think if i'm surprised at anything as you take a look at the 10-minute ticker there but i'm surprised at anything gary it's been the pressure the chiefs have been able to put on cozart and that is very important when you're playing a big strong powerful team like the cleveland browns make kozar do some things that he doesn't want to do he's so accustomed to sitting back there counting the house having a field day picking apart defenses and he's not able to do that so far well let's see what transpires this time as kozar sets his ball club again matt combiner are the setbacks [Music] flying horn to the near side slaughtered the far side ozar with time this time looks down the field and a great catch by ozzie newsome at the 35-yard line the man who through the years has been known as the wizard of oz pulls in another one and that keeps a consecutive game streak alive a 15-yard pickup and what is this the 128th consecutive game the newsome has managed to pull one in watch it in the middle of the screen now this is what kozar is accustomed to see the outstanding pass protection when you give kozar that kind of protection and you have a great one like ozzie newsome on the other end you're going to have big time plays just like that we've reached the end of the first quarter here at arrowhead stadium in kansas city we have no score the browns however have moved into kansas city territory and as we invite you to stay with us we'll come back in the second quarter and see who will be the first to break this scoreless deadlock actually we understand we're not breaking away we're going to stay right here so that's good reggie you were talking about uh the fact that the pressure that kansas city has been putting on bernie kozar now in a couple of instances we didn't see it on the last play but byner was brought right up next to kozar and that really takes them out of the offensive scheme that they want is that because of the anticipated pressure from the chiefs yes this is evolving into quite a chest match between the offensive coordinator of cleveland browns and the defensive coordinator rod russ of the kansas city chiefs the chiefs obviously have found that whenever they put an eight-man front at the line of scrimmage it forces the browns to pick it up using their halfbacks and if their halfbacks are involved with blocking for cozar then you take a man like ernest biner who wants to get out of that backfield and make some catches you take him right out of the offense that's rod russ with the headset on and the red cap came over from new england last year but he was with this ball club for a number of years in the early 80s mentioned that sefsik and rust and bettis are the newcomers to the gans coaching staff all three of those men have been with ball clubs to the super bowl rust of course with new england a couple of seasons back we checked the first quarter stats you hold this ball club to cleveland browns to 59 total yards in the first quarter and you're playing some defense this is a this this offense can be almost unstoppable at times it's got to be concerned on the part of marty schottenheimer and there's got to be a sense of satisfaction i would think of this first quarter for frank gans on the other side of the field right now the browns with the football in kansas city territory at the 35 as we get set for the first play now the second quarter this time byner is way out to the far left along with webster slaughter the handoff goes to matt matt trying to turn the corner on the left side boy he puts the shoulder down and he just pushes defenders out of the way as he gets inside the 30. kevin ross finally able to bring him down mac can be a load at 235 pounds and he showed us why right there i had a conversation with kevin mack last night and kevin told me that he doesn't really like to run over people but every time i've seen him particularly when he goes around the outside the big load is going to put his shoulder down and come at you all just short of the 29-yard line as kozai brings his club up second and four just underway second quarter scoreless battle thus far between the chiefs ozar has that stance with his right foot dropped back isn't that quick retreat but not known for having quick feet but that helps him under pressure from hackett dumps it off intended for mack at the 30-yard line he couldn't hang on ozar went down dino hackett right up the gut that time with pressure and bernie had to unload in a hurry i applaud the way the kansas city chiefs are playing because they know that they cannot sit back and play the cleveland browns and expect to win what they're doing is gambling that's that's what they're doing on every play they have somebody in cozart's face right up the middle on every single play and it is keeping them in this ball game now it becomes third down and four for kozar you're one for three in the first down conversion department thus far all right let's see if the chiefs don't come up to the line of scrimmage and make bainer come up to the line of scrimmage showing seven men up in the front here's the blitz burris with a shot knocks the ball away boy kozar really took a lick and he's going to be okay lloyd burris came in virtually uncontested on the left side of the defensive set and he unloaded on bernie kozar i think the chiefs have found a flaw in the past protection scheme with cleveland browns because watch the right side of your screen where ernest spiner number 44 is he looks inside and on the right side now coming out of the screen there's number 34 lloyd barris who blindsides kozar and if you want to win a championship you better pick up his blind side because you're not going to have that quarterback long if they continue to miss those blocks cleveland has now called a timeout to talk about the strategy in this situation 1404 to play in the first half we'll see if they go for it or attempt a long field goal in just a moment a performance you won't forget [Music] the new ford pro gt have you driven a farm nevertheless he's also making a tremendous comeback like the fins on a 57 and a t-bird on the wing like certified auto service nobody fits you like goodyear well on the sidelines across the way bernie kozar is receiving some medical attention after a blindside hit by lloyd burris we have no indication if there's a serious problem or not gary danielson is in at quarterback now and he is faced with a fourth and four situation at the 30-yard line handoff inside the biner does not get the first down the chiefs hold and look at the emotion on the part of that defensive unit dino hackett with the tackle and a lot of happy fans in kansas city as once again they've stopped the progress for the browns and the confidence of the kansas city chiefs is growing with every defensive series the chiefs were ranked 27th overall in 1987. they brought rod rust in here they have a new philosophy they have some outstanding young players there it is in the middle of your screen number 44 byner not many linebackers stop byner in his tracks dino hackett number 56 did so now kenny with a play action fake pumps and fires to the far sideline intended for stephon page at the 43-yard line incomplete with frank minifield over there let's uh check in on another update gail gardner is standing by at nfl live in new york thank you gary in indianapolis the colts were leading the oilers 7-0 on a gary hoga boom touchdown pass to matt booza but this time around it was hoga boom picked off by steve brown he returns it 44 yards for the score the game is now tied at seven let's go back to gary and reggie in kansas city [Music] steve brown one of those who is striving for recognition in the defensive secondary in houston we talked about all of the pro bowlers that are bound on the defensive secondaries in this game and brown putting up a touchdown to help this club today we're looking at kenny going long got carson out there deep but he can't get the ball to it carlos carson had the defender beat but the ball was overthrown browns dodged the bullet right there with the flyer from louisiana state university fastest man out there there's number 88 carson just doing a stop and go move but kenny's throw is too far for carson we have a big missed opportunity right there and you know that kenny's wishing he could get that one back his record as a starting 44 games under 500 coming in at 34 and 38 but he has led the chiefs in passing over the last seven years i think the win had a great deal to do with kenny being so far off the mark with that pass good point third and ten from the 28th chiefs have emile harry in motion out of the shotgun kenny [Applause] firing down the near side and this one is picked off and dropped felix right had it in his grasp at the 50-yard line but he lost it great opportunity for wright that time confusion in the past route by the kansas city chiefs they had two players in the same area kitrick taylor number 82 and carlos carson number 88 somebody ran the wrong pattern which brought number 22 felix wright into the area scoreless at arrowhead fourth down situation now as kelly goodburn comes on for his fourth punt of the afternoon the reason why good burn is having so many shanks is because he doesn't want to kick the ball to the most dangerous punt returner in pro football that's gerald mcneil he'll have to this time stephen bragg just turned around and pointed to mcneil that the kick was going to come to the near side instead it goes almost straight away and mcneil from the 30 goes to work he finds a bit of a hole and gets out to the 40 yard line so he picks up about 10 but there is a penalty marker down at the 33-yard line greg hill was there in the tackle after the 43-yard punt and an apparent 11-yard return but whether or not that return stands we'll find out in a moment and so many times in the course of the nfl season we see that familiar signal right there from tony indicating that there was a block above the waist or behind the back i would think marty schottenheimer is going to have to get concerned about this the cleveland browns were penalized 15 times in their last preseason game against the new york jets and it appears the trend is continuing 105 yards number 24 on the return 10 yards first out anthony blaylock has signaled for the illegal block here so the ball will be spotted at the 23. we still have no score in kansas city it's been a surprising chief's defense thus far [Music] [Applause] a lot of people had a lot of fun getting ford ranger to the top ford ranger get up to 750 cash bonus on america's best-selling compact truck ford ranger [Music] i'm an american original win an chapter students in bosworth's book of etiquette personal hygiene i suggest the maximum protection of new right guard sports stick from gillette antiperspirant and deodorant anything less would be uncivilized the product the vehicles the testing grounds the results stp oil treatment is [Music] never said a word let's battle the redskins before your team takes the field our team hits the air nfl live bernie kozar on the sideline gary danielson is the quarterback for the browns first down cleveland as danielson goes to the air and completes the pass along the near sideline is mack bumped down by aaron pearson maybe we can go back to that sideline shot after the 19-yard pickup kozar was blindsided by burris and suffered an injury possibly to his throwing arm the elbow they were checking on we'll check final scores from the early games that is what brought danielson into the contest people want to know why the cleveland browns won't trade a guy like gary danielson a quality quarterback this is the reason when you're a super bowl contender and you lose a bernie kozar you'd like to have a gary danielson to replace him all the 42 yard line networking the left side trying to pick the hole now across the 45 to the 47. so danielson has the club on the move but each time the browns have moved the football today the chiefs have responded now here's kozar on the sideline you can see he's trying to loosen that arm up and test it find out just uh whether or not it's going to be effective he's three for eight thus far today and remember in the preseason he completed 65 of his passes three for eight not a pretty good number so a couple of areas of major concern for the browns their coaching staff and of course their many fans but the man at quarterback knows how to operate he's been there second down now for danielson and the browns and off again to mack this time straight up the middle and this time there is no hole four men just swarming over him pearson del rio hopefully griffin all there and just throwing him back a little bit slow to get up the kansas city chiefs have frustrated the browns in some respect because they can't throw the football to those backs the way they want to and the chiefs are also doing a good job at the point of attack that's where the runner enters the line of scrimmage and you can see mike bell and leonard griffin and those people just controlling the line of scrimmage on the cleveland browns and the cleveland browns aren't used to that that big talented offensive line is used to doing that to the defensive line and they're not having their way today third down two yards needed for the first down the ball at midfield for cleveland kansas city with a five-man front and no first down again this time it was byner who was tripped up and dino hackett is in there dino hackett has just been sensational penetrating the line of scrimmage and making those shoestring tackles watched coming from your right look at the good tackle low grabs the ankles of byner dino hacker from tiny appalachian state in the southern conference has been a star here with the kansas city chiefs today hackett goes back to the sideline lee johnson is on to punt now for cleveland and kentrick taylor stands back at the 10 11 yard line awaiting the punt johnson gets the kick off and a pretty good one taylor watches it but it doesn't bounce for cleveland involved is out of bounds back up around the 15-yard line steven bragg's providing coverage downfield but no chance for a run-back for taylor and the chiefs 36 yards on the punt surprisingly we're four minutes into the second quarter and still no score in kansas city the ford tempo gls [Music] a sophisticated sports sedan with true feel of the road handling ford tempo gls a sorry i just couldn't help overhearing the silver bullet won't slow you down horselight the silver bullet for all the right reasons it's the right beer now [Music] hmm [Music] oh [Applause] looking on the sidelines at rod rust who is the new defensive coordinator for the chiefs and certainly that's been the story of the first half of this ball game the chiefs defense now the offense goes to work under the guidance of bill kenny from the 15-yard line no score and the handoff comes into the rookie saxon and saxon gets a couple of yards out to about the 18 on the left side coming up to make the tackle that time with david grayson we pause briefly now for station identification this is the nbc television network we're channel 3 wkyc-tv cleveland gain of three makes it second and seven [Applause] well at the 18-yard line now for the chiefs rookie tight end roberts goes to a slot on the right side now saxon and palmer are the setbacks behind kenny and this is palmer trying to pick a hole and now slides through to about the 21-yard line on the right side before mike junkin drags him down i see a story developing and there it is folks bernie kozar is headed for the cleveland browns locker room probably for x-rays got some ice you can see on that right elbow here's the man who of course who led [Applause] the league in passing in 1987 put up all the magnificent numbers has been on the cover of virtually every magazine in and around cleveland in recent weeks and he is headed for the locker room right now after being the victim of a blind side hit from burris kenny firing swinging it out on the sign and former with no opportunity to pull that one in so they fail to get the first down with third and three and the punting unit comes on and you see the grimace there from kenny who comes back to the near sideline kelly goodburn will come on for i believe the fifth time of the afternoon in a punting capacity neither team is passing the football well and i have to believe the winds here have a lot to do with that when the wind is blowing the way it is the ball takes off on you gary it's a lot more difficult to make the catches that you normally do because the quarterbacks can't judge the throws properly and the receivers have a hard time picking up the ball 9 42 to go in a scoreless first half goodburn standing back at the eight-yard line now handles the snap and gets the kick away mcneil looking for a return from the 32-yard line the ice cube taking a look now gets a block pops through across the 40 45 and down at the 50-yard line nice little move on the part of the smallest man to play the game in the national football league as he gets it out to midfield in great field position once again greg hill making the tackle on gerald mcneil 45 yards on the punt 12 yards and the return seattle now with a touchdown to lead denver in the second quarter while the jets and patriots remain deadlocked at three other late games indianapolis has now taken a seven point lead over houston still no score between san diego and the raiders and of course no score here with 9 29 to play firsthand gary we understand that bernie kozar is questionable so gary danielson a veteran of 11 years ago in the trade from detroit in 1985 is the man guiding the fortunes right now of the cleveland browns it looks to go to mack and mack runs into that red wall once again let's go back and take a look at that play where bernie kozar was injured watch the right side of your screen someone misses the blitz from the outside you see burris go by number 44 ernest finer wasn't a bit real big hit but i think what happens is you can see kozar on the ground there and apparently he used his elbow to break the fall and i can tell you from experience when you do that something might get [Applause] second down and 10 from midfield for the cleveland browns three and one in the preseason they went ten and five last year almost got to the super bowl losing the championship game to denver danielson fires down the middle and finds his man at the 31-yard line it's webs through slaughter flotter pulling it in and kevin ross making the tackle 19 yards on the pickup that time and danielson as you mentioned he's been around he's got 81 career touchdown passes and he's thrown for a lot of yardage in his career the browns won't have a lot of drop off at the quarterback position as i told you good pattern by slaughter number 31 kevin ross what's the rough tackle oh that hurts at the 31-yard line in kansas city territory 809 to play first half brown's on the move mack takes it on the right side tries to straight arm del rio and then is really punished on the hit by the rookie smith that's neil smith out of nebraska the first round draft pick of kansas city [Applause] [Music] [Applause] watch this shot here jack dale rio number 50 has matt coming from nowhere number 90 neal smith the first round pick well that's that's a hard hit your ancestors will feel that all at the 30-yard line where it's now second down neal smith a very quick man they say he's as quick as a defensive back and an initial move trying to find a home here on the chief's defensive line here's matt picking his way inside head down bangs ahead to the 22 yard line good run that time by mack for darron cherry and finally muscling down jack del rio looks like also in there let me tell you what i think is going on i think marty schottenheimer is saying look we're not having a lot of success throwing the football the chiefs are provide presenting us with a lot of different schemes up front we're not blocking them well so he is taking that big back kevin mack 230 pounds who runs the football straight at you and sort of providing some stability for this offense and he's running the football and that's what marty schottenheimer would like to do anyway mack is now carried 10 times and has 39 yards to show for it ball inside the 22 and nearly the 21. see that's the versatility of this football team gary they can do both things and do them well cleveland has just taken a time out and that's their last time out of the first half they have utilized all three of theirs now we still have 7 16 to play in this first half but we're yet to see anybody score leave it to the good hands people joey there's my girl oh it's not the holiday inn now you're gonna have to get all these you'll offer something infinitely more valuable the new beer much brush [Music] it's shampoo plus conditioner in one for control you can't get from ordinary shampoo 11-year veteran gary danielson talking to marty schottenheimer on the far sideline on the near sideline it was dino hackath conferring with rod rust conferences are over we're ready to resume action the brown's only one of five and first down convert our third down conversions looking at third and one right now well under lindy and fonte a year ago you could expect anything here the browns might even throw the football and come back and try for the first down on fourth down but under marty schottenheimer who is new at being in the offensive coordinator i think the browns will play this one safely and try to pick up the first down tim manoa is in now as the lead back along with biner in the backfield behind danielson brennan in motion to the near side the handoff there's the binder and again byner is nailed before he can get to the line of scrimmage and leonard griffin was the first man through there as the chief's defense rises to the occasion again and i think if i know that scheinheimer is going to do that i think the chiefs believe that they'll run this football here look at the collision right there look at the penetration of the red shirts they get behind the browns line of scrimmage there's virtually no hole to go to no blocking up front that's why the chiefs have neutralized and virtually stopped the cleveland browns offense 40-yard field goal attempt coming up now for matt barr matt barr who is a 10-year veteran had only one field goal attempt in the pre-season that was good has a career along with 52 being called on for the first time today trying to break this scoreless deadlock is spotted at the 30 and it's blocked the ball is free and the chief's trying to pick it up and now dino hackett has it across the 50 still on his feet and down at the 45 yard line lloyd burris may have been the man to block it and dino hackett runs it back and a crowd roaring it's approval here in kansas city as the 40-yard attempt was blocked by lloyd burris a whole mark of any frank gans football team is the special teams play burst number 34 gets inside blocks a kick a few years ago barris did this for a living when he made it all pro here's number 56 dino hackett picking this up watch matt barr number nine it's a good way to get yourself injured matt but still he gives up his body to stop the runner so the ball at the 43-yard line and for the first time today kansas city now is in cleveland territory 6 21 to play first half scoreless we have seen some major league collisions in this season opener thus far and it has been a surprising one because most everybody figured that cleveland would be able to move the football kenny over the middle completes the pass to stefan page at the 30-yard line 13 yards on the pickup and now for the first time the chief's really getting into scoring position as we take another look at the block field goal you can't see it but from the right of your screen what extension number 34 beres got that time not only did he get inside but he got way up in the air with his arms out and deflected that kick and burris almost had the ball bounce right back up to him as he completed the penetration had that happened he'd been a touchdown because it would have been a faster man running with the football at the 30-yard 25-second squeeze on the 32nd clock 25 seconds please jim tony getting an adjustment on the clock let's assess the psychological ramifications of what has happened to the cleveland browns the chiefs four and 11 a year ago are playing them toe-to-toe kozar has gone out they've just had a kick block you wonder can they recover from this gary seattle has scored elway to mobley it is now a 7-7 ball game there new england leading the jets by three as we check the ticker raiders get first blood against san diego i think you're absolutely right reggie so many people talking about cleveland being a team that has to be among the favorites to get to the super bowl right now they've got kozar in the locker room having his elbow checked and the chiefs are threatening for the first time at the cleveland 30-yard line that movement and contact in the line and now the whistle says kenny was going to make sure that nobody got a hand on that football super bowl talk is great in the preseason but i tell you it's 16 long weeks before you even get to the playoffs isn't it i'll tell you somebody who is unimpressed the kansas city chiefs i think you've got that right offside defense five yards still first down cleveland three penalties 25 yards rob costa simon rashad paul mcguire at nfl live coming up at halftime we'll be updating activity around the league on this opening weekend invite you to stay tuned for that this has been a bruising football game and even though nobody has scored yet it has been entertaining first in five now for kansas city in cleveland territory at the 25. paul palmer with a football he has a hole gets to the 20-yard line the ball was ripped away but i believe the play was whistled dead it popped out of there brian washington the rookie strong safety among those for the browns making contact it's good enough for a first down homer only carried the ball about 23 times all of last year he was the leading ground gainer in the preseason you see his numbers for 1987. and with the injuries to uh christian akoya and herman heard there was a lot of concern about whether or not kansas city could move the football against the browns defense coming in today palmer 5-9 180 probably the smallest starting running back in the national football league runs inside deceptively well for his size substitution in the cleveland defensive backfield as will hill has come in felix wright went off to the sideline and they were checking a possible knee injury he is now over on the far bench and a member of the staff is checking on number 22 right while the ball at the 20-yard line and first down coming up for kansas city you see felix right on the far side now four out of drake [Applause] quick hitter inside good for a couple of yards and straight ahead see whether or not the chiefs try to play it cozy or conservative we had a penalty marker down once again and again an indication this one's going to work against the browns so the mistakes are now starting to take a bit of a toll here for cleveland offside number 57 that's a veteran clay matthews making a rather basic mistake for that time when they line up a neutral zone [Applause] well kenny has exactly what he wants to work with he has first down and five he's on the 15 yard line he shouldn't put this ball up for grabs and not throwing the ball well anyway so he probably should keep the ball in the hands of palmer or saxon to be nearside page to the far side split about seven eight yards as kenny continues a long count and a whistle and this palmer and again penalty markers are down so play has really bogged down here with 357 to go on the first half and this will be a procedure call against the chiefs number 77. five yards still first down they caught rich baldinger number 77 [Applause] going too soon there he is [Applause] so the balls move back to the 20. let me just keep moving it around in five yard increments here see the penalty totals now four against each team with this being a tight defensive struggle kenny doesn't want to give the ball away because even three points right now puts the chiefs in good shape so we're back to first and ten kenny looking flips it out here completes it to roberts and the tight end is bumped out of bounds at about the 16-yard line david grayson with the pop also over there is mike johnson you see number 59 here's grayson roberts getting his second reception as the rookie tight end starter today for frank gans well the benefit of a bill kenny at quarterback is that you can do something like that kenny recognizes when the browns are coming with their blitzes and each time the browns have come kenny has been able to get rid of the ball to robert to one of the halfbacks and he has avoided a sack and has salvaged a good play it's second and sixth now rather than uh second and ten kenny likes the new offensive scheme instituted this year says it gives him a lot more flexibility than he had in the past under pressure looking for the end zone has palmer there but he overthrows it brian washington the defender was back there well that looks like x-rays in the hands of someone there on the sideline and we can't begin to pretend to read reactions or faces but apparently a decision may be forthcoming there's bernie kozar now back out looks like he's still got the ice on that right elbow let's see if he heads right for marty schottenheimer [Applause] kenny is now 7-15 is thrown for 51 yards looking at this third down situation with the ball at the 16-yard line four wide receivers and the chiefs need six six yards that is for the first down they'd love to have six for a touchdown as well out of a shotgun and he pumps once now goes to the end zone has a man there touchdown emile harry there's a flag on the play emily marker down kenny was also down back at the 26 yard line where he was hit by carl hairston so the officials will huddle and confer and we'll get an indication right now from jim tunney illegal formation offense defensive [Music] [Applause] tough break for kansas city you watch frank gans there the chiefs were in an illegal formation let's see if they had seven men on the line of scrimmage illegal formation watch kenny come back to harry coming right down the middle who has beaten mark harper well excellently thrown football outstanding catch but offsetting penalties nullify the apparent touchdown so it remains third and six the ball's still at the 16-yard line and again four wide receivers in for kenny and the chiefs you have to have seven men on the line of scrimmage you take a look at that formation again it appears that john alt is too far off the line of scrimmage again and he is elected to take a time out now and we'll come to the sidelines and talk with frank gaines and company and also sapsic the offensive coordinator so the mistakes have been costly on both sides thus far still scoreless in kansas city as we remind you that this game is presented by authority of the national football league it is intended for the private use of our audience any rebroadcast or other use of this telecast without the express written consents of the kansas city chiefs and the national football league is prohibited into the property of the national football league the cleveland browns and the chiefs all rights reserved [Applause] well they're working with kozar on that right arm down on the sideline they're going to wrap it again as we'll update scores now seattle has even things against denver [Music] new england and the jets still the same but 6-3 in the battle of field goals thus far houston has bounced back now to tie things up mike rozier going one yard for a touchdown and the raiders hang on to that seven point lead over san diego marcus allen with an 11 yard touchdown run counting for the raiders loan score [Applause] but we've found that uh we've learned rather that bernie kozar does not have a fracture there's considerable swelling it's probably very sore he's questionable and probably will not return in the football game third down from the 16. chiefs need six yards to keep the drive alive as kenny again look to the end zone stephon page has the ball knocked away at the very last moment coming up to make a fine defensive play with braggs number 36. superb defensive effort by steven braggs so nick lowry will come on now one of the most accurate kickers in the history of the nfl currently third on the all-time list limbering up the leg and getting set for an attempt here that will be spotted at about the 23-24 yard line making it a 33-4 yard attempt he's pretty accurate from here almost automatic in his 10-year career he has only missed one field goal inside the 30. and he drills this one right through the middle so it has taken a long time before anybody could score but finally lowry and the chiefs have grabbed a three to nothing lead now on that field goal 33 yards for lowry makes it a three to nothing ball game we still have 311 to play here in this first half a few years ago the kansas city chiefs established a reputation in the national football league for putting quarterbacks out particularly tim cofield you got to believe that they have a psychological lift here having a three-point advantage on everybody's afc super bowl favorite as well as putting bernie kozar out of action take a look at this 33-yard attempt once again and here's the reaction from nick lowry as he heads off the field finally breaking the ice the only man in the nfl to kick field goals of 50 yards or more twice in a game he's done he's done it two times in the season and he's done it 14 times in his career only john stinaroo has more i think 17 and john stenerud also kicked in a very long successful career here with the kansas city chiefs lowry now gets ready to kick it off leading by a score of three to nothing [Applause] saw the ball being held earlier today because of the swirling winds at arrowhead stadium it looks like this time it will stay on the tee all right this kickoff sponsored by budweiser the king of beards here's lowry's boots high and deep brags and fontenor back hot pontino at the 2 yard line will run it out for cleveland starts out to the left side being chased now wants to reverse direction and won't get to the 20-yard line well you never want to do that i mean you either take it and pour it up inside or if you break outside you keep going fontenot isn't a speedback so i don't understand his judgment there it's not a very good return by herman fontenot [Applause] i'll see what the browns can muster this time around if you've joined us late by any chance bernie kozar was injured on a blitz by lloyd burris of the kansas city chiefs they took kozair to the locker room for some x-rays on his right elbow he is back out on the sideline he has the elbow wrap report of swelling and it's not expected to see action here at least he don't anticipate it at the moment swing pass intended this time ernest beiner is incomplete sanderson of course has been the quarterback since i was injured the situation grows worse for the cleveland browns now kevin mack has a net contusion he is also questionable as to whether he will return to this ball game so this the kansas city chiefs are playing a very hard-hitting aggressive style of football out here today and it's taking its toll on the cleveland browns mack was the man that danielson had turned to when danielson first came into the ball game and tried to move the offense and he had some yardage i think they can ill afford not to have a player like kevin macklin football field manoa has taken mack's place in the backfield as along with viner byner is the motion back danielson completes the pass combiner at about the 23-yard line email packet there along with jack del rio to make the tackle for kansas city now that's the first time the browns have gone to buying her out of the backfield usually that's a staple part of their offense getting the ball to binder out of the backfield and we'll have to wait and see if the chiefs are able to neutralize byner's play coming out of the backfield ball spotted at the 24-yard line third down and three to go five defensive backs now for the chiefs cleveland only one of six and third down conversions looks far this afternoon danielson under pressure completes the pass to langhorne and langhorne wiggles out to about the 34-yard line easily has the first down albert lewis is the man who pulled him down and danielson stepping up against the pressure nicely that time reggie those are the kind of catches you're going to have to make today because the coverage is so good albert lewis and kevin ross are excellent man-to-man defenders you're not going to have a lot of room two minutes to go in our first half kansas city and a lowry field goal leads this one by a score of three to nothing army challenges you to identify the best in the game in this session of chalk talk every team needs a leader on the los angeles rams our leadership comes from an offensive lineman this guy's been outstanding ever since he blocked for walter payton in college he's our offensive team captain and has been a pro bowler for the last three seasons who's the subject of this chalk talk let's go a couple times i wondered what you get yourself into mcmanus [Music] especially when you have somebody who really believes [Music] offensive tackle jackie slater number 78 has provided leadership for our team for 13 seasons honey should we take the other car i'd rather not ford escort now offers an attractive new design plus fuel injection and a 660 powertrain warranty in fact the redesigned ford escort may make your other car seem considerably less attractive honey aren't we ever gonna take the other car nope the world's best-selling car just keeps looking better all the time now get a 500 cash bonus on 88.5 ford escorts he fell in love with every man's fantasy the ultimate girl next door but can he stop her from making the ultimate sacrifice for stardom i married a centerfold wednesday [Applause] [Music] score in kansas city with the chiefs leading the browns three to nothing gary gerald with reggie rucker two minutes to go in the first half now once again there's that situation where biner is drawn up now to protect his quarterback this time danielson and danielson under pressure flips it out here intended for weathers who had to field it on the short hop clarence weather is the intended receiver that ball may have been tipped or deflected by neal smith who had penetration on the pass rush danielson's reaction that time and again you see what we were talking about earlier with biner up there reggie right finer had to get in there in case the linebacker or safety came neal smith i don't think neil smith deflected that ball i just think that they got so much penetration in danielson's face that he could not make the proper delivery to the receiver second and ten now for the browns who trail three to nothing they're in their own territory at the 35-yard line see they take bonner out of the game with that strategy here's the blitz and this one is complete diviner out of the backfield with room to work great brings a tackle at the 50 in kansas city territory down to the 39-yard line finer showing you a nice open field move as he broke a tackle and picks up 27 yards but that time the browns count countered with some offensive strategy that was the perfect remedy for this blitz now bonner is up in there looking for the back he allows the defense to go by then stops and takes a quick pass we come quickly back to live action as the browns try to hustle and move against the clock the pass intended for brian brennan is incomplete that stops the clock with 117 to go now [Applause] it was a reception i'm sorry that does not stop the clock it was a reception i thought i saw that ball popped loose brennan just discarded it to hustle back here's a pass over the middle that's clearly broken up at the 22-yard line j.c pearson with the uh protection that time against reggie langhorne danielson's going to have to make hay while the sun is shining and by that i mean he needs to get the ball to ernest bynum byner is the man to look for the way the chiefs are covering right now because they've got dino hackett number 56 attempting to cover byner all over the field hackett cannot cover byner that was the first time today on that completed pass out of the backfield of miner that they have been able to come up with something against the heavy pressure as we take a second look what's the move here good fate additional yachties breaks that tackle by darron cherry now we come back to live action from the 33-yard line danielson looking left fires it inside now and a nice grab by webster's slaughter as the ball popped out by hackett after he was tackled in the vicinity of the 22-yard line a lot of talk going on out there between receivers and defenders in this one today down to 47 seconds to go you see the time ticking away sun has broken through the clouds now it makes it a little difficult to read that clock firing right over the middle another completion with the 50 yard line and that was a super effort by reggie langhorne double coverage right in the center of the field those are the kinds of catches that say something about a receiver is he going to catch the ball in traffic bro you saw number 88 langhorne do it just then danielson throwing this one out of the end zone on the left-hand side to stop the clock that was a second down pass and that will stop the clock with 23 seconds left to go in the first half very good two-minute drive being put together by gary danielson and you've got to respect what he's doing because remember this is a man who just hasn't played much football and yet he's been standing over there on the sideline watching the development of bernie kozyal and yet he is still able to come into the game and play this way watch this catch again by reggie langhorne good catch and traffic between two hits still makes the uh still holds on to the football i think duron cherry thought he had an interception on that one langhorne came right back there and grabbed it away also they're working with a handicap with no timeouts during this two-minute drive they used all their timeouts early danielson flips it out to biner has a man out in front inside the five-yard line down to the three pearson drags him down and look at the clock we're down to 12 seconds to go and there's no time out they can't stop the clock that way they practice this play all the time gary down to five four he throws it for the sideline and it's down to two now and we see penalty markers down you're going to see a penalty but they can afford a penalty here because it's little more than a 20-yarder even if it's a a 12-man call against the browns that's what i suspect it'll be [Applause] that's the situation where when you don't have those timeouts to come down to those final seconds it can really be costly you know going back to that catch by byner what do you think ernest barnett was thinking when he made that catch guy headed for the goal line you bet don't number 24 defense was lined up in the neutral zone it's half to this is the goal line it's first down okay watch it here's what i mean what do you think look he's got that ball out but now he puts it away right now because he knows that the most important thing inside that five is possession of the football this should be a tie game when matt barr is finished barr had the 40-yard attempt blocked now he'll try here on a 19-yarder that should be routine and it is good so as time expires we have now reached the end of a very interesting first half at arrowhead stadium in kansas city and the bar field goal has nodded the score at three to three and who would have thought coming into this one that it would be this low scoring at halftime kansas city has done a real job on cleveland from the defensive standpoint and of course the browns without the services of bernie kozar a nice two-minute drill however executed on the part of gary danielson as he takes us right on down down to halftime and it's a 3-3 ball game i'm art model just a minute excuse me i'm pat modell with a special thank you message for everyone who's been part of the united way winning team bernie kozar can pass us to victory on the field and when it comes to providing daycare services he's a team leader too marty schottenheimer has given new life to our team but he's also giving new life to our senior citizens gerald mcneil can run against the opposition on the punt return and he's teaching young people to run against the odds and win when it comes to fighting drugs united way and my silent partner here is leading us all to a better community and a better tomorrow because united way it brings out the best in all of it now did you want to say something art goodbye that's good this message furnished by the national football league halftime in kansas city in a 3-3 ball game what denver go to the half they're tied up there at seven in the game you're watching cleveland and kc even at three nick lowry with a 32-yarder matt barr with a field goal of his own for cleveland just before halftime to tie it and now a look back at the most important play of the half here's the rush by lloyd burris coming in in the first quarter on bernie kozar hits him near the right elbow bernie is injured we don't know yet how seriously but the initial x-rays did not reveal any broken bones gary danielson played out the first half at quarterback for the browns elsewhere to the third quarter in foxboro where it's raining cats and dogs and the patriots have the lead on the jets six to three they've just gone to the half of the coliseum in la and the raiders have a 14-3 lead over san diego in the debut of mike shanahan at 36 the youngest head coach in the national football league and he watches as tim brown the rookie heisman trophy winner from notre dame goes 97 yards with a kickoff return following a san diego field goal earlier marcus allen had run 11 yards for a raider touchdown they lead it 14-3 at the half they're in the third quarter at the hoosier dome in indianapolis and the oilers and colts are tied there at 14 apiece now finals of games played earlier today chicago over miami 34-7 neil anderson replacing walter payton on a full-time basis runs for over 100 yards and a couple of scores jim mcmahon also had two scoring runs san francisco beats new orleans 34-33 montana with three touchdown passes bobby a bear threw for four for new orleans but they come up a point short buffalo beat minnesota at buffalo 13-10 pittsburgh over dallas 24-21 luis zendejas 50-yard field goal attempt in the last few seconds wide to the right for the cowboys that could have tied it cincinnati wins at home against the phoenix cardinals 21-14 three touchdown passes for boomer assistant neil lomax threw two for phoenix and had the cardinals inside the cincinnati 10 with 30 seconds to play but the bengals stopped them there the rams beat green bay 34-7 the packers turned it over five times philadelphia beat tampa bay 41-14 two touchdown passes for testa verdi in the buccaneer loss randall cunningham threw for two and ran for one for philadelphia and detroit over atlanta 31-17 the final score at the silverdome in baseball the a.l east is the only race that's close here are the scores affecting that pen and chase milwaukee beat detroit today six to one milwaukee is only four back meanwhile boston over the angels in the seventh at anaheim five to four and so if the red sox win this game they will move into a first place tie with the tigers atop the division the yankees are playing at oakland and the a's are pounding them in the ninth 11 to two so the yankees are going to stay four games back unable to take advantage of the recent tiger slump all right let's go back to the field and we'll join you later in the day [Music] both ball clubs back on the field cleveland and kansas city in a 3-3 halftime tie and reggie rucker we talked about that injury to bernie kozar let's go back one more time and take a look now at that blindside blitz that came in actually from a side normally where he'd be open but he was looking left all the way on this pass when he was hit i have to believe that the defender is the responsibility of the back who missed him by getting caught up in the line of scrimmage you see kozar go down by number 34 paris and he landed on his elbow and he is out of the ball game and of course burr is figuring in another very big play because he was the man who came right up the middle and blocked a field goal attempt that nullified another attempted drive or scoring its effort on the part of the brown right on the left side of the browns kick protection unit barris gets his hand up now if he picks this ball up it would be a touchdown or if albert lewis who is the fastest man on the field got it but dino hackett number 56 the linebacker was able to pick it up and he's going to be kidded by all of his teammates he let mad bar tackle him sacrificed his body to bump him out of bounds that time but now there's a very important question that has to be posed here with kozar injured swelling in that elbow not expected to see action what happens if gary danielson is hurt they got a big problem mike pagel is on the 47-man roster but mike pagle was deactivated before the ball game so they only have two quarterbacks on the roster kozar and danielson now with all of the blitzing and stunting tactics that kansas city is using i mean you can expect uh some more of the same and they'd be in real big trouble if danielson goes down take a look at the numbers from the first half you can see that the browns have run up nearly 200 total yards to 85 for kansas city one thing these stats say look at the chiefs column total yards 85 yards even though the browns offense is not what it should be look at the way their defense is playing 85 total yards passing seven of 16. that in my opinion is what championships uh that's what championships are built upon extremely good defense and of course if you can keep that kind of an effort week after week which is something that marty schottenheimer has been preaching he wrote individual letters to all of his players talking about the detail of the job and to forget about what happened of course against denver last january week after week if you do your job the winds take care of themselves and kansas city cannot be content with just playing a good first half all last year that happened to them gary they played well in the first half they played well in the fourth quarter as a matter of fact we're leading ball games in the fourth quarter i think they lost four ball games in which they were leading in the fourth quarter so frank ganz's responsibility here is to get these players to continue this level of play take a look at frank ganz on the sidelines now and a 3-3 ball game about to get underway in the second half this kickoff sponsored by budweiser the king of beers brags and fontenot in the deep spots lowry puts his foot to it and this one will go to braggs at about the two-yard line across the 20-25 and down at about the 27-yard line stephen braggs running it out in cleveland now after getting the field goal as time expired in the first half to tie the contest at 3-3 we'll send danielson back out you touched on the fact reggie that he's seen very little action he played in only one game last year that was a replacement game and what a game he had as he threw four touchdown passes in that victory but look what he accomplished after the injury to kozar 10 for 14 118 yards pretty solid numbers typifies the depth and the quality depth that the cleveland browns had tim manoa is the up back along with kevin byner behind him kevin mack was hurt for earnest binary i should say kevin mack was hurt also in the first half and it's miner going straight ahead turning his way across the 30 as we get underway in the third quarter i think that's a statement in itself oftentimes the most important part of the second half is the first two or three minutes what you do during that period to establish control of the football game marty schottenheimer true to his roots went to the run and that's a power play and you can look for more of the same in the second half i think the browns want to try to get control of the line of scrimmage got that big offensive line with uh that average is better than 280 pounds per man that's been molded bringing the motion back now off again once again a terrific little move that gets him an extra yard pearson brought him down but lloyd burris was the first man there and byner gives you that one look one way and then suddenly goes to the other very agile for a big man great play by burris who got deep into the backfield but you also saw the pursuit of the kansas city chiefs that's another rod russ trademark they pursue up and down the line of scrimmage watch it now watch how the red shirts go to the left of the field they watch the play now watch how they all start going for the football you got to have a lot of red helmets around the football three of them on that play third down conversions cleveland is four of nine looking at third down now with six defensive backs out there eyeing danielson who retreats has protection and flips it out on the near side but over the outstretched arms ernest miner penalty marker is down at the 34-yard line saw an abundance of penalties in that first half and this one is indicated as going against kansas city and that's a defensive call on holding which would result in the first down holding defense number 45 five yards and first down first year player sydney johnson of cal berkeley is uh guilty so that moves the ball to the 39-yard line a key component of the cleveland browns offense not in the ball game we told you number 34 kevin mack the pro bowler full back sustained a neck injury is not in there he is a big element of this offense and the browns will miss him although manoa is not a bad player way out to the left and danielson looking in that direction completes the pass it goes to webster's slaughter i believe was pulled down in there by ron cherry slaughter having a very effective first half i think he caught five balls in the first half so we give him six now here on the afternoon to answer our question earlier gary the browns are saying that if need be cozar would come back into the football game so that's good news for brown's fans everywhere well at least we have some encouragement there in regard to the cleveland cause because you know nobody likes to see anybody get hurt on this game and you know that injuries are a part of it bernie kozar went in for the x-rays in the second quarter came back out we saw him being treated along the sideline but in a pinch he could come back let me tell you during practice in a pro football camp the most serious part of practice is that part of the practice where pro football teams cover blitz protection they go over over it very meticulously because you can lose a quarterback apparently we had a review going on that particular play and it was ruled as called so it is second down now for the burns three three ball game just short of midfield cleveland and anderson looking deep over throws by about eight yards webster slaughter dino hackett with the rush up the middle that time i don't think that webster really has uh an opportunity to get deep on particularly ross and and lewis because they're such outstanding runners they've got great speed top of the screen there you see number 31 good contact the allowed and you see number 31 kevin ross running all the way with western slaughter number 84 good defensive play a little stop and go that time by webster and danielson apparently was looking streak all the way at least where that ball ended up it was eight to ten yards beyond the intended receiver binary motion right over the middle and no chance for langhorne one of the things the chief secondary really wants to improve upon this year is the interceptions last year they had only 11 and a couple of those prime defensive backs just flat said that was embarrassing in 1987. they haven't picked any off thus far today but they played some inspired football they haven't handled any punts well that's for sure i think kentrick taylor number 82 who's back deep has been instructed look if it doesn't look good don't handle it kendrick taylor is back here waiting for the ball has this one at the 15-yard line a little stutter step across the 25 and uh that's about it so taylor gets about 10 yards back on that return 12 34 to play in this third quarter that was a 39-yard punt we're still on a 3-3 ball game in kansas city [Applause] for those little trips that turn into wild adventures suddenly there's the new four-door mitsubishi montero v6 power and four-wheel drive help you avoid snarling beasts montero offers surprising comfort under the most savage conditions and it even has more room than jeep cherokee the new four-door v6 montero because sometimes it's a jungle out there [Music] kansas city with a football and this is paul palmer around the left side after the 30-yard line now as the chiefs try to generate something in the way of offense in a 3-3 ball game that has seen two and a half minutes go by here in this third quarter dixon coming up in the corner to make the stop as bill kenny takes a look to the sidelines now and picks up a play homer did that all on his own gary pure speed there wasn't a lot of blocking outside but the one thing he does give you is that outside speed and he picked up about seven yards strictly on his own palmer says he's learned to relax a little bit this year and make things a little bit easier on the transition to the national football league after a rookie season this time it's the rookie saxon who goes straight ahead and gets to the 34-yard line hairston golic this tough twosome there in the center of that down line for cleveland ideally what the browns want to make you do is they want to make you throw the football on second down they want to play that good run defense on first down limit you to about three yards on first down and bring that bear defense in put about seven or eight men around live scrimmage and rush the passer but they haven't been able to do that because kenny has come up with a way to get adequate yardage on first down third and short two of eight and third down conversions for the chiefs browns with a six-man look up front and here is saxon trying to get the yardage and doesn't look like he got there factor looks like he may be well short he reaches way out there to stretch the football but way too late these teams are playing very conservatively i think that they are happy kansas city probably is happy with being tied and the cleveland browns are probably happy that they're only tied because of the way they played so i think we're going to see a little bit more open football in the second half here because both coaches are playing very conservatively and very close to the best good burn on the punt once again and there's gerald mcneil the diminutive one who had a couple of touchdown returns on kicks nullified because of penalty last season he can be exciting to say the least some breaking through the clouds once again on a good boot this time by goodbye driving mcneal back to the 16 yard line cube looking for that picket fence along the sideline gets out across the 35 so once again a nice little return not spectacular but effective sydney johnson there to make the tackle for kansas city after a 51-yard punt on the part of kelly goodyear they're still 3-3 at arrowhead with the football working from the 36 and tim manoa across midfield on a nice run that time as manoa gets his first call of the day now it moves into kansas city territory we talked about the number of pro bowlers that we have in this ball game today and reggie i know you've had an opportunity to talk with several of the key ones about what motivates them on opening day in a brand new season how they prepare albert lewis is a good example let's start with albert lewis sixth year from grambling 6-2 198 pounds fastest man on the chief's team he likes that physical bump and run intimidating style to play we'll get right in the receiver's face and take you on once again we see a penalty marker down as dino hackett is on the tackle and i believe it was miner who was into the middle of the line that time one of the things that albert lewis likes to do is he says he likes to win every down he looks at the football game as being a series of battles and he wants to win them all and i'll tell you what there aren't many better defending than albert lewis whether he is a bump and run or off the ball 10 63 10 yards pull down the offensive line and that is uh corey rising who was singled out for the penalty we're going to be isolating on albert lewis and we'll have a chance here on a couple of plays to just watch him at work and you know something else the cleveland browns are staying away from these cornerbacks they really haven't challenged albert lewis today they've been throwing against ross but they will not throw against lewis i'm not saying that they won't but they haven't [Applause] 10 minutes to go third quarter 3-3 ball game now as gary danielson looks out to the near sideline and finds ozzie newsom his second catch of the day this one at the 46 yard line cherry is there another pro bowler to make the tackle [Applause] update scores on the 10-minute ticker seattle now leading denver by seven new england has opened up a 10-point advantage over the new york jets craig throwing to butler for that uh seattle touchdown raiders leading san diego 14-3 and indianapolis and houston or even at 14. just as cleveland and kansas city are even at three here with the browns in possession of the football at their own 46-yard line second down we need about 16 for a first down anderson over the middle this time to brennan brown with a 49 thrown back to the 47 yard line by jack del rio danielson who hit 10 of 14 in the first half is the substitute for the injured cozar picking away trying to get the yardage underneath but he's faced with a third and long situation coming up now kansas city kansas city's defensive scheme and the rushing that they've been able to pressure that they've been able to put on cleveland quarterbacks today has forced cleveland to throw the ball underneath throw it short and taking them away from their normal game where they want to get the ball downfield to some of the wide receivers third and 13. number 49 yard line rush on the part of the chiefs danielson steps up and fires and this one's picked off by cherry jerry's still on his feet and at midfield he's pulled down so the first interception of a brand new season for darron jerry the 35th of his career and kansas city has the football back and once again their defense really been the story of this ball game we talked about the chiefs falling on lean years but they have some of the best players in pro football duron cherry is one of them he has made the pro bowl five consecutive years as a matter of fact he is one of the all-time great free agents gary in the history of the national football league he plays that center field as well as anybody that time he was reading the eyes of gary danielson and once again pressure on danielson forced that interception now the chiefs go to work now with carson the later side page to the far side and bill kenny looking to the near side down the sideline carson can't hang on at the 24-yard line that's a ball that he believes he should have caught well he should have because hanford dixon who was covering carson on the play really couldn't find the ball dixon was doing what a bump and run cornerback should do running and shadowing the receiver and he shouldn't be looking here's another look at it see dixon right there but doesn't see the ball thrown carson had it in his hands didn't make the catch although if you look back that way gary you're looking right into the sun we also saw coming into that frame right at the last of the play felix wright and he went out earlier with a suspected knee problem when we mentioned the injuries to mack and the cozar but right is back and obviously now playing in the cleveland secondary look out there's the sack bracelet unlocks the ball loose it's picked up with the football as bob golick let's see if it's ruled as a fumble or not i'll tell you what that was a very quick whistle if they call in the grasp and control i'm sure replay will take a look at this david grayson was the man who had the pressure all the way and got to bill kinney let's watch this left side of your screen grayson 56 has kenny all right yes that's grasp and that is controlled that he is down right there good call not much doubt about that one golic alertly got to the football just in case that moves it back to the 42-yard line where it's now third down and about 18. 19. isn't it great to have replay you can correct yourself [Applause] harry was in motion momentarily oh that's a dead builder this one's up for grabs whoa and it's hung out get up and run yes indeed the browns hanford dixon has it oh that one was up there against that wind we've been talking about today and it was just up for grabs and that's why these teams haven't been throwing the football downfield we've said all game long that the wind is affected these quarterbacks just cannot get the ball downfield when you think about the win and also the kind of pressure that is being put on them let's take another look at it as we watch hanford dixon two years in a row all pro one of the masters of the bump and run technique in professional football hanford of course the originator of the so-called dogs defense about four years or so ago has marketed a cologne i understand in the cleveland area he's into all types of interesting sidelines here during the off season comes up with a big interception so cleveland has the football back danielson who was intercepted a few moments ago completes this pass to tim manoa bumped out of bounds at the 35-yard line by lloyd burris the thing that makes andre dixon so special in addition to his immense talent and the ability to play the bump and run is that he studies the opponent as well as anyone in the game duron cherry also does this gary but he knows where he's supposed to be he's very smart he's the leader back there in that secondary and usually when a big play is needed in the secondary amber dixon will make it for the cleveland browns when you talk about studying you're talking about literally hours every week with film and video tape that's week after week all season long year after year that's what makes them special in the nfl manoa looking and running right into the griffin at about the 35 or 36 yard line leonard griffin trying to fill the shoes of art still who was traded to buffalo and uh he finds himself in a kind of a hot spot because still was one of those veterans that a lot of people enjoyed watching through the years in the kansas city uniform now third down has been a down in which the cleveland browns have really gotten rich they have been very successful on third down and short yards kozar has been at his best when it comes to spreading the field putting receivers across the field spreading the defense out and hitting somebody underneath now danielson's turn is to do it he's as smart as cozar as a matter of fact kozar learned most of what he knows from danielson and i wouldn't be surprised to see him trying to get the ball to find him we'll find out in a moment ball is knocked away looking for it it's on the turf getting a hand on it was bill moss the pressure again of the kansas city chiefs and danielson had barely taken his drop and there was moss right in his face we talked to bill moss yesterday and you talked about somebody ready for the start of a football season yeah i wouldn't hear him i thought he was going to come at me pressure right in the face nothing affects the quarterback worse than pressure right in your face you can't get the ball off lee johnson the barefooted left-footed kicker is on once again and back is kitrick taylor awaiting johnson has to feel that one off the turf but he gets the kick away and looking up toward the sun ketrick taylor now beats a retreat and grabs it at the 15 and was pulled down immediately and thrown out of bounds stephen brags downfield quickly for the stop after a 49-yard punt still a 3-3 ball game in kansas city the four-wheel-drive mitsubishi montero built for those adventurous few who heed the call of the [Music] well sunshine is broken through the clouds once again in kansas city now at an arrowhead stadium in a 3-3 ball game the chiefs will go to work behind bill kenney 7 of 18 for 51 yards had that one interception just a short time ago now working short of his own 16 yard line and after paul palmer and he gets a couple of the tough way off the right side give us an opportunity now to update the 10-minute ticker these were finals from the early games today chicago big over miami san francisco hanging on to beat new orleans by one in buffalo surprising minnesota other games pittsburgh the winner today cincinnati spoiled the debut of the phoenix cardinals from the rams big over the green bay packers and lindy and fatty's debut we'll have more right after we have this play now on the part of the kansas city chiefs chiefs have had tough field position all afternoon here against the browns frank minifield is out of the ball game now gary drags on his spot his palmer is chased out of bounds by junkin and check the rest of the scores now these are other finals philadelphia with a big win tampa bay chester verdi struggled in that one today detroit a big winner over atlanta [Applause] checking some of the headliners in week number one neil anderson with a big day a couple of touchdowns we mentioned tessa verdi with a tough day five interceptions and look at the numbers for eddie brown today 143 yards and six receptions and a touchdown for the cincinnati bengals who are victorious over phoenix two of ten in the third down conversion department now that's the story for the chiefs who are looking at third and nine deep in their own territory coming out of the shotgun four-man rush ball on his hip steps up gonna be dragged down no chance to get it away making the tackle with sam clancy and we're hearing some booze at arrowhead stadium and some of the enthusiasm for kansas city earlier in the day is evidenced by their great defensive play now giving way to some frustration on the part of the local fans good coverage down field by the bump and run cornerbacks of the cleveland browns kenny cannot find anybody to throw to you can see him looking around there's no place to throw the football and of course the pursuit of the cleveland brown rush sacks bill kenny looking at kelly goodburn once again standing on his own two-yard line awaiting the snap [Applause] he's had an active day and the kicking definer gets off a nice boot against the breeze and this one way back mcneal goes back to the 27-yard line cube looking for some running room needs a block penalty marker down as he goes down with a 41 or two yard line lewis cooper downfield to make the tackle that time number 55 after a 56-yard kick on the part of kelly goodburn he's got a couple of good efforts today and jim tunney will uh let us know in a moment just where the ball will be spotted and the infraction again works against cleveland at 5 17 to play in this third quarter marty schottenheimer not real happy with these little mistakes we talked about the number of penalties was it 15 against the giants and that win last week for a better than 100 yards and they've had their share in this one today illegal number 81 during the return five yards 10 yards first down derrick tinnell on the special teams well i i know that excuse me i know the cleveland browns uh defense is good and kansas city we know had a defense that went from 27 to four and we'll get back uh with the thought after this 5 17 to go in the third quarter crowns will go to work at the 18-yard line in a 3-3 ball game now 5-17 to play here in the third quarter the handoff goes to tim manoa working the left side now puts the head down and turns out up to 24. ball bounces loose and out of bounds but i think that was uh after the whistle i think the question at this point becomes is it a case of seeing defenses that are really outstanding today or are the offensive teams just having a rough afternoon i think that the office performances are uh for lack of a better word lousy today i i know the cleveland browns have an excellent defense and and kansas city is trying to improve its defense but what we're seeing out here is less than what we expected particularly from a team that is looking to go to the super bowl and another team that's looking to improve its offense i just don't think they're playing well offensively at the 22-yard line now cleveland putting the ball in play in a second down situation they need six get the first down and off again to manoa manoa running well out across the 27 28 yard line tim manoa is playing in place of the injured kevin mack and of course gary danielson is playing in place of the injured bernie kozar if danielson were to be hurt in case you joined this lake kozar could conceivably come back he's had his right elbow injured when he was hit in the first half today on a blind side blitz and he's had ice on it much of the time and he could come back in a pinch of course i'm sure bernie and the rest of the browns are hoping that that wouldn't be the case you'd hate to risk any further aggravation of the injury at the 29-yard line it is the first down now for cleveland field that's been the story of the scoring today a big surprise has been the defensive intimidation on the part of the chiefs this past noah is complete he gets out to the 35-yard line before he is wrestled down by kevin ross [Applause] noah becoming an effective part of this ball game here in the last few minutes for the cleveland browns both as a rusher and as a pass receiver these are the injuries minifield is out with a full groin muscle that's why we saw him on the sideline and bragg's in his place in the last defensive series for the browns kozar with a spine right help sprained right elbow and a bruised neck for kevin mack so it has been a tough opening day thus far for the browns who have not won a season opener in the last five years chiefs have not lost an opener in the last time [Applause] this pass swung out to manoa who can't hang on after he was popped effectively by jack del rio well you can see the cleveland browns are just getting more conservative as they go along without mack without kosar they're opting for the rather safe execution plays and what you're seeing is a lot of third and fours third and fives and then you get the blitzes from the kansas city chiefs and you have no continuity to the offense updating scores and the other later games you saw on the screen talking about injuries warren moon the houston quarterback had a right shoulder injury is going to be x-rayed after today's ball game so some bumps and bruises being felt all around the league number one this pass intended for slaughter is incomplete right about the 43-yard line dino hackett was there once again see what we're witnessing is the same pattern over and over the browns run the football along first down get a pretty good game then second and third they're doing the same things the kansas city chiefs has picked it up and that's why they're keeping the cleveland browns from moving the football now the crowd just a short time ago is expressing some displeasure with the kansas city offense is thoroughly encouraging the defense as a punting situation and catcher taylor stands back at the 24-yard line johnson's boot johnson really gets this one up high beautiful easy spiral taylor no chance to grab it now what is he doing around the football that's just incompetence you don't play that way in the national football league the ball is going to go dead at the three-yard line but ketrick taylor i think he thought for a moment that he may have touched the ball and he was taylor has not caught the ball all day he is afraid to catch the football and if you can't catch the football you ought to get somebody else in there that can that is a very critical mistake because you put your offense inside the five yard line you're not moving the football this can cost you a football game that ball bounces back and touches him it could be an easy cleveland touchdown or an excellent position to score but i've been watching him all day gary and he has just refused he's been reluctant to go make the catch that you have to make you got to make that punt catch now in his defense he's looking up into bright sunshine but that doesn't excuse running back in the vicinity of football that was a 61-yard punt and here's a mix-up now on this snap for the chiefs who go to work deep in a hole let tony and crew sort this one out for us [Applause] the start of this day under mostly overkill 99 defense five yards still first time this game lacks excitement you know we're not seeing anything happening here watch it here on the left side of your screen number 99 daryl sims offside shouldn't be there just losing this concentration for a there line but nothing working out to the minute whatsoever they're going to get some booze from this drive awesome a couple yards and if they don't get something going here right away goodburn is going to be faced with another one of those tough hunting situations where he has to go against the breeze down here's frank gans on the sidelines and i kind of wonder what's rummaging around in in his mind you know he's got to be encouraged at the play of the defense yeah i mean he's happy to be in this situation offensively the chiefs just haven't been able to generate much of anything and again the injuries to accoya and heard don't help them in that situation larry moriarty has come in now for the first time in the backfield he's the d-back behind kenny cuddling he has protection completes the pass step on page out across the 15. i believe he has enough for the first down that's a big play for the chiefs there's kozar coming back on i'm wondering if we're going to be seeing bernie kozar here in action or not i do not see that ice on that elbow that we saw earlier the way he's holding it gary oh it is still restored it's still wrapped i can see it now that's a big play for kansas city gets them out away from their own goal line and a little breathing room for kenny and let's see if he goes right back to that pattern of running the football on first down first continue now from the 16 for the [Applause] third quarter this chiefs is caught by carlos carson on the sideline across the 35-yard line 2 24 to go in the third quarter steven braggs now being picked upon over there with minifield out of the ball game that's a 20-yard pickup that's one of the big plays offensively for kenny today broke the pattern on first down this time and decided to run the comeback that's carlos carson's favorite pattern he told us yesterday while talking with him in a clutch situation he wants to run that outside pattern and he did it then picked up a first down he comes to the near side this time as the chiefs come up to the line at the 37-yard line [Applause] inside handoff to former and palmer cracks to possibly the 39 before he's pulled down by bob golick see that's what i don't understand he's got stephen braggs a rookie on the corner literally a rookie and he's got an all-pro receiver who just made a 20-yard game go right back there why go right back into the middle line where you've not had any success and his numbers today with one interception bernie kozar on the sideline his uh touchdown streak was in jeopardy he had thrown for a touchdown pass in 17 consecutive games which was the longest such streak in the nfl right now we're wondering if anybody's going to score a touchdown here's the blitz and this one thrown away there was contact between carson and dixon but nothing untoward apparently no penalty markers down see this doesn't make any sense to me i would put carlos carson on the rookie steven brags on the right side i would create the mismatch he sends carson to the left side on hanford dixon there's just nothing happening over there down to a minute and 41 seconds to go here in the third quarter now still in a 3-3 football game you don't get a chance to take advantage of these things off in matchups and the kansas city chiefs have a golden opportunity now to exploit something and they aren't doing it congressman again on the near side he's got hanford dixon right up in his face movement on the line [Applause] he fires at the cage who makes a leaping grab at the 45-yard line step on page with some acrobatics that time with penalty markers down and it looked as if kenny was going to have a free throw that time [Applause] [Music] outside defense number 54. five yards mike junkin called for being offside let's watch number 83 stefan page on number 23 mark harper good pattern he leans against the defensive backs break out good concentration as he makes the catch third down and about two or three yards 55 654 on hand at arrowhead today to take in this season opener in kansas city they've been encouraged by the defense but the offense has struggled once again here comes the pressure chiefs pick up the blitz and the pass in and out of the arms of stephon page just short of midfield kenny ends up on his backside stefan page had an opportunity to catch that football and didn't of course stefan pays number 83 as the nfl record holder for yardage in a game set in 1985 [Applause] what a ball game that was for him 309 yards and he catches the football well gary i'm surprised he didn't hold on to that one final scrimmage the 44 and again good burn to kick by floater and at the 16 yard line we've got clarence weathers back there this time rather than mcneil and weathers gets out to the 25-yard line clarence weathers fielding that punt for the first time today a 40 yard punt with a nine yard return james saxon there to make the tackle that's been one of the differences in the ball game the cleveland browns punt returners have fielded those punts no matter what whether it's been tough catches or high catches and they have avoided that long loss of yardage that you saw kansas city take when their punt catchers did not feel the ball it's a very important thing to do in pro football so gary danielson the veteran who played his collegiate ball at purdue and of course spent eight years with the detroit lions before becoming a cleveland brown in 1985 comes back out once again in place of the injured bernie kozar as we count down the final minute 10 of the third quarter in a 3-3 ball game byner in motion handoff to manoa in a big hole that time on the left side out over the 30 to the 34 yard line paul ferran and larry williams opening it up on the left side that time before the ron cherry and leonard griffin to drag down manoa good blocking that time on the left side of the cleveland browns line paul ferran number 74 and larry williams number 70 manoa didn't have contact until he reached the safety let's take a look over here on the monitor and see what we can find out as the cleveland browns who've been hard hit by injuries today now have mike johnson being attended to it appears there's manoa once again this time the hole doesn't open up cleanly but he still manages to get a couple of yards out of it across the 35. [Applause] paul faron last year was the most improved lineman among the browns voted that way he was a 12th round draft choice out of boston university good school taken 316th player drafted that's a long way down the list but he's turned it into a productive nfl career and for that matter larry williams was a 10th round choice we've reached the end of the third quarter our score cleveland three he may be patched up and ready to get some more duty as manoa head down churning straight ahead randy you mentioned how conservative both ball clubs have become but right now manoa is effective carrying the ball up the middle for cleveland take a look at some third quarter or through the third quarter stats the browns are moving the football but they aren't scoring and the chiefs that's a tribute to the chiefs defense particularly when the browns have gotten down around the scoring territory they've gotten the browns to do something to turn the ball over now manoa is really running that football well behind particularly ricosi and dan feick on the right side 46-yard line at work and again spinning across midfield with a 49-yard line for another pickup of about five that'll give him his eighth carry and 54 yards now on the afternoon for manoa now this is an altogether different offensive look for the cleveland browns and what you've been expecting the cleveland browns are multiple formations and diversity they want to get the ball to a lot of people here they have really closed ranks gotten into literally what looks like an eye formation with a single back and they're playing power football coming behind that big offensive line vince abbott field goal the latest score raiders over san diego 14-6 you saw that seattle now stretching at craig to warner [Applause] against denver meanwhile here in kansas city and moving down to about the 42-yard line as ernest byner gerard cherry up to make the tackle so cleveland trying to get a concentrated drive going now trying to break this 3-3 deadlock well you know when uh lindy and funny was here and and the browns were very creative and very imaginative offense uh look back three years ago this is the style of play that they were using before anfanti came here marty shottenham just running the football right down your throat you watch the double team blocks and he wants to push forward there's manoa straight ahead once again close to the 40 and then tossed back by dino hackett who's been winning any number of calls thus far today 55 000 654 on hand watching this one today as we're early in the fourth quarter we have 12 minutes and 45 seconds to go beautiful arrowhead stadium in kansas city this is such a magnificent complex with the royals baseball park just next door one of the real fashion plates as far as stadiums are concerned around the country side by side facilities kansas city scoring early on a field goal and then cleveland getting to that bar field goal and the final play of the first half to tie it it's been three three cents but the browns in chief's territory right now at the 41 yard line here's tim manoa again now this time the chiefs muscled up a little more effectively as they anticipated that push up the middle very close to a first down he's going to get that right foot spot from the side judge which means he'll probably be short of the first down [Music] we're talking a few moments ago about that offensive line of the browns the fact that farron and williams were draft choices in the 12th and 10th rounds over on the right side of the line dan flake was a free agent acquisition he was actually a 10th round draft choice by the jets in 83 and cody ryzen was a seventh round draft choice so howard mudd is molded in that interior line a rather effective group i want to test my right foot left foot theory here gary well we'll take a good closer look can't get much closer than that when they give you that right foot it's going to be very very close i got one guest for this first down play manoa behind rokosi and fight i promise you they found something in the middle of that kansas city line and ironically they're running right at who many people consider the best nose tackle in football in number 63 bill moss but they're getting a double-team block on loss and then moving the other guys back [Applause] no surprise danielson keeping the football and looking downfield nothing happened griffin had penetration over there on the far side and while danielson was able to elude his full grasp he had no place to go but out of bounds i don't like that call a lot because you know you're in that same formation and the kansas city chiefs know sooner or later they're going to run a play-action fake and try to throw the football they just didn't fool anybody there was no one open and the browns receivers really haven't had a lot of success against the kansas city cornerbacks today i think webster slaughter is about the only player that's had any success at all and that's been mostly short passes of the short variety now because there was a loss in that play of a couple of yards griffin gets credit for a sack so make it second and 12 now for the browns pressure right up the middle danielson is sacked effectively this time and it's dino hacker third sack of the day for the chiefs and hackett on a delayed blitz that time found the alley and nobody touched him that's how important first down has been to the way the browns had been playing last first down danielson was sat for a loss now the browns have to pass and here comes the chiefs with the blitz nobody picks dino hackett up number 56. we have seen this happen a lot today rokozi is new in that spot don't forget that that might have been a wipeoff technique where he was supposed to come off the one block and pick up hackett i'm not sure but if i were to guess i would say that was ricosi's man rokuzi we saw him as he was falling backward he realized that hackett was coming by to his left but he had no opportunity to spin toward him there was just no contact whatsoever the ball back at midfield and danielson may have to take a timeout now now we have a penalty marker down too much time clock ran down 45 second clock new this year [Applause] 45 seconds unless there is an administrative stoppage in which case the clock is set at 30 seconds that's one of the new rule changes this year only a couple of rule changes of any real significance you know both head coaches gary are looking for that one drive that will gain control of the game and every time one team attempts to do it it is stopped it looked like cleveland was doing just that but now they're third and 26 and byner can't hang on what a great play by neal smith neal smith got a hand on that did he not well he got in so quickly gary and he got right up in danielson's face that gary had to throw the football over watch left side number 90. watch this he gets up in the air he makes danielson throw the ball too high for viner outstanding play made by number 90. neal smith the first round draft choice of the kansas city chiefs from nebraska in his four years at nebraska smith went on quite an improvement campaign he gained 50 pounds he picked up a full half second in his 40-yard timing and he added five inches to his vertical leap and we saw it pay off right there as that vertical leap got him up in the air and that ball was tipped away and now after the browns appeared to be on the move they are paced with a punting situation fourth and long back in their own territory and lee johnson was on pitrick taylor is now now let's watch kendrick taylor again because he is the man who has been having a lot of problems catching the football i'm sure they have instructed him look you have to catch the football we're losing too much yardage when you allow it to bounce and here's the kick fitting by johnson up high taylor takes a look at the 10 yard line shakes off one man and across the 20 and down at about the 21 sir taylor at least got an opportunity to run that one back 45 yards and the punt 11 yards on the return and a little confrontation going it appears across the way after tim manoa very busy man here lately was in on that tackle 10 56 to go still 3-3 in kansas city [Music] kentucky fried chicken we do chicken right this is a brand new shop vac that comes with a surprise so where's the surprise in a minute first this baby picks up stuff like nails and glass like a regular shop vac so where's the surprise and like a regular shopback wet dryer it also picks up water so where's the surprise just watch you twist the top lift it off and you've got a portable blower a surprisingly powerful blower shopvac if it doesn't say shopvac keep shopping record i'm gary gerald we're in the fourth quarter 10 56 to go in kansas city chiefs for the football 3-3 deadlock against the browns mike johnson incidentally back in the defensive unit now for cleveland kenny with protection now has to unload at the last minute and it was incomplete the 23-yard line that ball was in and out of the hands of mike johnson who just came in it was intended for paul palmer johnson had some taping done to his left shoulder when he was on the sidelines and in case again you joined us late the browns are without bernie kozar they're without kevin mack all right let's go let's bill kenny right here looking can't find anybody that's almost ill-advised there was a little bit of contact there with mike johnson but you can play through the man to the ball if you're making an effort to get to the ball and one other injury that we neglected to mention in that last accounting frank minifield is on the sideline a groin injury quarterback braggs plays his left corner right now kenny over the middle dumps it to the tight end roberts alfredo out across the 35 to the 37-yard line now there's a little imagination that we haven't seen in the part of kansas city's offense one of the simplest plays in football the tight end pop the tight end just literally looks inside for the football the browns had a open middle of the field there they weren't defending that part of the field and alfredo roberts the rookie from university of miami makes this catch see right inside mike johnson number 59 reaches for it lunges for it can't get it has to be hauled down from behind by number 56 david grayson by the way david grayson is the son of david grayson the defensive back who played for the kansas city chiefs for four years from 1961 to 1964 and had a spectacular career then with the oakland raiders this is alfredo roberts who was shaken up after pulling in that pass and getting a 16-yard pickup he has three receptions today for 34 yards there's david grayson david grayson marty schottneimer says quite simply he's the fastest linebacker that he's ever coached or had an opportunity to play with when he was a player at a linebacking spot pretty high praise for this young second year player out of fresno state the big story today aside from injuries the fact that this ball game has not turned out like anyone had expected i don't think at all i don't think anybody would have told you that uh coming down with ten and a half minutes to go would be a 3-3 contest well i'll tell you something else i think the wind is whipping up even more than it was at game time you take looking at the flags at the north end of the stadium and this is one of the reasons why the quarterbacks are having so much difficulty throwing the football they can't control it in this win next sunday we hope you'll join nbc sports once again for an exciting football double header first most of you will be seeing the steelers travel to the nation's capital to battle the defending super bowl champion redskins plus regional action in the second half of our doubleheader so check the local listings for the games and the time in your area starting at 12 30 eastern with nfl live that's next sunday on nbc of course nbc will have the super bowl in january in miami kansas city with a football this is palmer on the right side across the 40 out to the 44-yard line before he has popped down mike johnson was there to make a tackle so johnson showing some mobility and getting in on a couple of plays after he was shaken up and missed a series or two let's bring this up right now in case we get to a point where it's a factor and a 3-3 ball game here at if this game stays as is the advantage has to go to the kansas city chiefs who have nick lowery as their place kicker he is capable in with the win of kicking the ball 55 yards or even better already has a 33 yarder today matt barr has a 19 yarder that's been the only score in this contest in the 44 yard line kansas city in return territory this is larry moriarty across the 50 with the 48 yard line maybe the 47. moriarty getting his first carry i believe he was in earlier been in a couple of times we've been talking about both clubs looking for that one drive that might gain control of the football game we thought the cleveland browns were on it a few moments ago and it appears now the kansas city chiefs are putting together some plays of their own and they haven't been able to do this all game long but now they look to be controlling the line of scrimmage better than they have at any point in the ball game first down for the chiefs in cleveland territory one of the few times they have been in the brown side of the field this afternoon once again movement and contact in the line and before the play can unfold the penalty markers are down and getting the initial jump there was uh carl hairston looked like he had company but the way harrison reacted it appeared to be his call encroachment number 78 five yards go first down let me tell you what happens uh while this has happened so uh frequently you watch the left side carl harrison coming off and bill kinney does this normally quarterbacks will go on the second hut they'll go hud hunt when they want to bring the defense offside you'll go on the third count and you'll go hunt pop hut and that's what brings the defense offside kirsten the victim so five yards marched ahead now kansas city moving down close to the 42-yard line still first down firing deep down the middle looking for stephon page against double coverage and the ball not there knocked away braggs is down there along with felix wright providing the defensive coverage kelly susan felix wright played that exactly the way you want the center fielder to play watch the quarterback's eyes give help deep when possible and watch number 22 right at the screen protecting the deepest part of the field never allowing anybody to be deeper than he is felix wright number 22 has done a fine job for the cleveland browns as their free safety another look at it that's a traffic jam there he had no chance to catch that football second and five now moriarty the long setback little play action fake quick pass out here it was intended for alfredo roberts and the pressure that time coming from bob golick made kenny hurry the throw golic a little slow but he is getting back to his feet now i don't think i've ever seen two football teams have as much trouble yeah i think you and i did a game gary and uh gary and buffalo last year denver and brooklyn and it was a very windy day just like this and i think the quarterbacks had a lot of trouble that day too but people any credit a convenient planned effect on the passing game that wins can play and this stat right here kind of sums it up third down conversions for the chiefs only two out of 12 opportunities they're looking at third and five now they have four wide receivers in the ball game kenny chopping the morning already now morning already doing a little directing [Applause] four-man rush time for kennedy throw finds taylor at the 30. you'd be in great shape for tomorrow assuming there is tomorrow you can see how wet these golfers are getting and the problems that are presented as far as keeping the grips dry oh yeah you know the rule of thumb when it starts raining is candies get wet grips stay dry d.a.y kevin mack who has a nick injury that has forced him to his more casual attire and took him out of the ball game he got his 41 yards and nine carries relatively early steve kozar and minifield three key members all injured palmer trying to struggle for a yard after he was in the grass with clay matthews opportunity to update scores new england 28-3 over the jets seattle leading denver 21-7 craig de warner was the last seattle score in that ball game raiders now 17-6 incidentally in that raiders ball game heisman trophy winner tim brown had a kickoff return 97 yards and there was some talk about the jay schroeder possible trade going to the raiders and then possibly involving brown they may be thinking about some other name at this point i think they i think lachey has been the player that they've rumored to have uh dealt interior whining here's kenny back pedaling pressure and boom david grayson just pops his head in there and i don't know if kenny's going to be able to get right back up after that hit he took a shot well we haven't seen outstanding offense today but we have seen superlative defensive play by both teams and certainly that hit by david grayson sort of typifies the afternoon that's his second sack in the third for the browns it's been a tough day for quarterbacks green our leader by two it's a little downhill breaking to the left looks like he played it straight and hit it firm nice cut 13 under par for ken green this tie sooner or later [Applause] after flying so many aircraft i'm not easily impressed with car performance then i drove the cutlass supreme pace car at the indy 500 i was impressed can you sac test cutler supreme at the corner to bmw 325 and break better than the ford thunderbird i believe the browns were going to be called for offside and once again a mistake for the most inopportune time may turn the fortunes around for the cleveland browns it may give kansas city a big break offside defense number 92 finley will be accepted five yards still third down well that's the rookie michael dean perry they say he's very very quick off the ball as a matter of fact i think he was too quick for his own good that time you need to remember when you come into this league and in the big stadiums when the noise to look in at the football you cannot rely on guessing with the quarterback snap these quarterbacks in professional football are too good at pulling you off side that is the 11th penalty today against cleveland for 70 yards you see the time remaining 6 33 score tied at three mall 36 yard line in cleveland territory chiefs take a break on that one after felix wright had the interception nullified because of the mistake by harry kenny with good protection down the middle and in and out of the arms of emil herrod harry had a shot at that one but he couldn't hang on so the reaction from kenny as he looks downfield thinking what in the world we got to do to get some more points on the board and we haven't seen many passes thrown that deeply downfield that had been that accurately thrown that ball should have been caught by harry it was a good pass protection for kenny good throw harry just couldn't come up with football well kelly goodburn has had his share of exposure today already eight punts and a very healthy average considering the wind conditions that he's been working uh against for much of the afternoon 145 yards clarence weathers is back standing at about the seven or eight yard line gilbert angling for the far sideline trying to get it out of bounds and he does so inside the ten it appears gonna be about the six or seven yard line great kick good effort on the part of kelly goodburn so 6 19 to go yes indeed it's still 3-3 at arrowhead with new hot dishes complete line of kitchenaid premium appliances supreme pace car at the indy 500 i was impressed it has been a strange day of football thus far here in kansas city in this 3-3 deadlock the browns now working with their backs against the proverbial wall as they start from inside the 7th we welcome those of you who are watching uh new england enjoy a big victory today over the new york jets gary gerald along with reggie rucker this is a 3-3 ball game with 6 18 to go and with the football trying to work his way out on the near side is ernest meiner of the cleveland browns for those of you who are joining us the big story today the fact that bernie kozar was injured in the first half his right elbow also frank minifield on the sidelines with an injury and the running back kevin mack also has been injured so three of the showcase names for the browns were picked by many to go to the super bowl on the sidelines watching this one utah look saw a look at bernie kozar there gary danielson directing the ball club after the resulting injury to kozo the defense of the chiefs has sparkled today but the offense for both sides have struggled nice stretched out catch by ozzie newsome we'll see if it's good or not at the 20-yard line the wizard stretching out at the 21 for his third reception of the afternoon notice when you get into a situation like that a veteran quarterback has been around this league will not think plays gary he'll think players and who better to go to than a future hall of famer ozzie newsome making a marvelous catch here watch the extension look at the concentration ball into the hands making sure at the same time he gets two points down inside before he goes out of bounds you can't do it any better than that 5 35 to go now we have another delay according to the officials here with a ball at the 21-yard line this is crunch time for a professional team particularly one that's thinking world championship you have to get in that huddle if you're gary danielson and say look we've got a 3-3 tie guys we can win this game with a long drive consume the clock get ourselves in position to kick a field goal or a touchdown if you have the luxury of that catch was complete it's first down oh no question about that so they took another look at that one we'll applause briefly now for station identification this is the nbc television network we're channel 3 wkyc tv cleveland tim manoa with a football and you saw another penalty marker coming in there's been an abundance of those in this ball game today as tim cofield was there with a tackle for kansas city five and a half minutes to go and this one will work against the browns great play by leonard griffin number 98 quick at the line of scrimmage getting into the backfield stopping that run by manoa frank ganz of course you saw him a moment ago on the near sideline in his second year as a head coach of the chiefs 73 offense 10 yards still first down so greg ricozzi has been called with that particular penalty mentioning about gans in his second year last year was a struggle and endurance for this ball club they won their season opener in dramatic fashion when they beat san diego then they lost nine in a row before bouncing back and playing some good teams well late in the season they had to rekindle the spirit they've restructured the coaching staff they have new offensive and defensive schemes and they're in a 3-3 ball game late against cleveland penalty marker down the intended receiver webster slaughter and the defender of course kevin ross who was protesting all over the place slaughter is also hurt slaughter hasn't gotten back up i thought for the moment that he was just going to make a he dramatically was there to emphasize the fact that he thought that a flag should be thrown but he has not gotten back to his feet well an interpretation of this rule [Music] [Applause] they're calling a personal foul here that's really unusual well and here's slaughter stretched out still on the artificial surface at arrowhead the browns and the injuries today we saw felix wright get banged up and also uh johnson but they both got back in the ball game in addition to the three headliners we mentioned a few moments ago that are out for the day and now webster slaughter who is their primary receiver is being administered too at the 33. well they ran that pattern at comeback pattern in the first half cozar and slaughter and you could see how well timed it was now london foul kansas city first of all roughing the quarterback is decline defensive pass interference kansas city is accepted first out you know there's more penalties on one play than you would ever expect well and when you saw danielson attempt the same pattern danielson and co and slaughter don't get an opportunity in practice to work on that play you didn't have the same timing but as slaughter was going for the football he was prevented and his effort to catch the football by the defensive back hence pass interference see slaughter gingerly reaching back toward the hamstring you don't know if it's a hamstring or down in the vicinity of the knee or just what and we can't speculate oh there's the personal foul elbow right to the face of gary danielson watch it watch number 98 leonard griffin elbow goes right into the face oh look at that that's rough stuff and this is even rougher for the browns who on a season opening day with such great expectations have now seen their fourth key member have to be helped off the field browns very have a lot of pride in the fact that they have quality depth at most positions and it's tested right now marty schottenheimer the head coach here's the the list minifield with the groin cosine of the elbow mat with a bruised neck lesser injuries as we mentioned to felix wright mike johnson to mike johnson who are both back in the ball game and now you add webster slaughter to this list who has caught a pass in every ball game he's played as a brown today being the 29th such game and he has helped to the sidelines [Applause] clarence withers will come in and take his spot the ball at the 33-yard line 5 25 to go in this contest and you see the score even at three manoa is the lone setback behind gary danielson and manoa has the football doesn't have much room to work that's a couple of tough yards on the left side before mike bell number 99 is there to meet him hit on bill moss number 63 the kansas city chief's nose tackle the all-pro is having a brilliant game today he is just escaping blocks at the line of scrimmage and he made that tackle and he was responsible for stopping that play he was a had a mini hold out on the pre-season and then got a new contract that makes him among the highest paid nose tackles in the nfl and we watch 63 at work right here 63 right in the middle of your screen fighting down the line pursuing making the good play from the 35-yard line brennan in motion for the browns and danielson retreating to throw dumps it off to manoa trying to turn the corner and does on del rio and gets close to first down yardage at the 43-yard line let's talk about tim munoz a little bit here because as quite as it's kept he has come into this football game and has played very very well he's catching the football he's running the football he's providing the kind of power that kevin mack gives to the cleveland browns and remember he has not played a lot so he has shown a lot of poise and uh i think he's done a very very good job in wake of uh being notified at the last minute that look get in there you gotta play [Applause] gary gerald and reggie rucker at arrowhead stadium in kansas city a 3-3 ball game four and a half minutes to go in kansas city with the football and the cleveland browns and team manoa trying to work out too close to the 44-45 yard line the only scoring today came in the first half on a 33-yard field goal by nick lowry that put kansas city in front three to nothing and then an answering 19-yard field goal by matt barr that tied it up on the final play of the first half that's where we stand and it's uh it's been a day of a lot of emphatic defensive hitting and the big plays have all been defensive ones it seems we of course chronicled the injuries that'll be set and bedeviled the browns this is called blacksmith football just pier hammering each other today anderson sends brennan in motion again toward the top of the screen and again the handoff goes inside to byner and byner gets to midfield aaron pearson making the tackle it's been a long time since i've seen pro football teams play this way gary i mean you're so used today to seeing the option patterns the wide open and of course if you've been watching the cleveland browns you know the cleveland browns play that way as you watch ernest byner picking his way picking up five yards i think second down second down to five now but with kozar out with mack out and the way this game has been played the browns just want to win any way they can just short of midfield second down for cleveland this is menorah working the left side cuts back nicely and gets into kansas city territory at the 46 yard line and again jack del rio out of usc is there on the tackle jack del rio is an interesting story taking a look at the field goal ticket matt barr for the browns who hopes he gets another opportunity he had a 40-yard attempt blocked by burris talking about jack del rio he played baseball at usc was a catcher was a teammate of mark maguire the oakland athletics actually uh maria was drafted by the toronto blue jays but he elected to stick with football and he's had a pretty active afternoon here for the chiefs as he's starting left outside linebacker anderson looking dumps it off to manoa with some running room lebron cherry bumps him out of bounds noah lost the football just as he was going out of bounds ball is going to be spotted however at the 36 yard line and if the cleveland browns do put themselves in a position to win this football game and then go on to win it they owe a great deal thanks to number 42 tim menorah manoa has been the just a workhorse in every way in this offense watch him here again he fakes the run here draws the linebackers in now with no linebacker play out there manoa is free to take the ball into the secondary you better hold on to it there but uh manoa is the man the cleveland browns have been counting on in this drive he's now carried 13 times for 68 yards and he's also caught four balls this time it's byner with a hole he penetrates inside the 30 to the 28-yard line we have an opportunity now to welcome those who are watching indianapolis and houston go at it this afternoon on opening weekend terry gerald with reggie rucker and we have 209 to play at arrowhead stadium in kansas city in what has been a bruising defensive contest a 3-3 ball game as we count down now to the two-minute mark so they'll stop the clock and we'll have an opportunity for everybody to confer and plan strategy for the last couple of minutes and we'll find out whether somebody's going to be capable of winning this one or indeed we might go to overtime a t the right choice last season steve largent became the second receiver to catch 700 passes who was the first player to accomplish this feat was it charlie taylor the jets don vayner or charlie joyner which would you choose when people buy telephone service particularly businessmen when they buy telephone service they're not buying telephone service they're buying a business capability think about your customers trying to reach you uh think about them trying to place an order and they can't get through because somebody hasn't engineered your access lines right or somebody well we have two minutes to play in kansas city in a 3-3 ball game and this one's been interesting from a number of standpoints we've chronicled the injuries and for those who joined us late watching the indianapolis and houston game kozar minifield webster slaughter also mack all out of the lineup for cleveland that's been a big part of the story but the aggressive defense by the kansas city chiefs has been another major part of this story reggie yeah the kansas city chiefs have played spectacularly they have put pressure on the browns quarterbacks all day and the linebackers have played well but what you're seeing now in this final march here in the waning minutes of the ball game is that resolve that marty schottenheimer has talked about with this football team and if they want to be champions they must be able in tight situations like this to come and just take over the football game and i think we're seeing that kind of drive right now by the cleveland browns shottenheimer down on a knee talking with bernie kozar with the ball at the 28 yard line let's check the report card here are the stats for danielson today manoa has become a big story in the wake of all the injuries slaughter caught five balls before he was hurt and you see the list of the browns who are out of the game because of injuries in this 3-3 stalemate cleveland however in the driver's seat at the moment now as they try to work inside to the 25-yard line as we take as we took a look at that report card once again it just proves if you're going to be a champion you have to have not only solid front line players but very very capable backup people at the 25 yard line this now the 11th play of the drive coming up and it's one of the longer drives we have seen all afternoon it's been a game that's been plagued by mistakes and missed opportunities danielson and monoi two key names there [Applause] hang on in motion now circles back to the right side the hand off goes to biner spins to about the 23-yard line so you're now looking at approximately a 40-yard field goal attempt as we continue to count down we're down to a minute and nine seconds to go and we'll check the chiefs report card now kenny with only 106 yards passing palmer with 28 yards rushing roberts the rookie tight end has caught three balls that's really that's it as far as the chiefs are concerned today what a tribute to the cleveland browns defense the offense was not on today and the defense took over this football game and kept kansas city from doing much with their offense at the 23-yard line 43 seconds to go cleveland with a football trying to protect at all costs weiner of course who has had to live through the winter with the results of that fumble against denver in the championship game protecting the ball that time to the 21-yard line and here's matt barr coming on matt barr who kicked only one time in the preseason one field goal attempt and it was good and he's going to be put to the test here in just a moment in a 3-3 ballgame [Applause] [Music] here you go jim no michael i want it more bud light if you want the one light that outshines them all ask the butt light go jump you're not sure bud light cause everything else is just matt barr who tied the game on the last play of the first half at three with a 19-yarder had a 40-yard attempt blocked by burris in the first half in his career inside 40-yard line is 30 or is 54 of 60 and he's looking at a possible game winner right here and this is why the cleveland browns opted to keep matt barr over jeff jacob who has a strong delay clutch and consistency from this range 38-yard attempt is on the way penalty marker is down you saw it go through the uprights also down is bar now the kick was good but there's a penalty mark was good no foul flagrant picked up feels good that's the word from jim tunney so the tie is broken with 25 seconds to go matt barr just made marty schottenheimer look like a genius because there was a big battle in training camp between matt barr and jeff jager and this man because of his poise is calm under pressure the ability to kick the ball through the uprights to win field to win football games is why they kept matt barr and lee johnson was the man who put the ball down with a perfect spot barr took the hit there they picked up the flag there was no penalty barr went off to the sidelines under his own power so with 25 seconds to go the chiefs now trail by three now remember well let's get the reaction to marty schottenheimer here boy tell me there's not a little emotion involved inside this man turning away right now this has been an awfully tough football game for him marty had no idea that they would come in here and get the kind of confrontation that they got from the kansas city chiefs today they thought that with their power and their talent that they could take control of this football game a lot earlier than they did but as it is it's a 6-3 cleveland lead and there are only 25 seconds left in this football game kansas city has how many time-outs three frank gans on the sideline has one timeout thinking back to season opening day last year and i happened to be here for a game against san diego and with about a minute and a half to go in that ball game the chiefs had paul palmer then a rookie run back a kick 95 yards and they beat san diego in the last two minutes now they've got 25 seconds to try to come up with some magic and let's look and see who the return men are kevin jenkins has taken up a spot in the middle of the threesome also back there is uh james saxon and kenny gamble who we're seeing for the first time here's johnson's kickoff attempt high and deep may not be an opportunity for a run back even jenkins puts the knee down and so with 25 seconds remaining the chiefs will come out and start from the 20-yard line they need 80 yards for the winning score perhaps less possibly to tie it up and go to overtime kansas city with one timeout remaining one the thing you do here gary defensively is that you protect the sidelines and you protect deep you will allow the chiefs to catch the ball in the middle of the field because they only have one timeout if they use that there isn't any way that they can stop the clock it has been a bruising battle he only scoring three field goals today and kansas city needs to come up with something dramatic right now i guess that would be the understatement of the afternoon kenny trying to do so floats it down the middle and it's picked off intercepted and coming down with a football is harper mark harper the third year player out of alcorn state comes up with the interception and it looks like that one may seal the fate right now of the kansas city chiefs you see the reaction from a frustrated quarterback bill kenny and of course the brown secondary with all those super bowl or super bowl the pro bowl players back there and mark harper who is the nickel back just waiting for such an opportunity knowing that the chiefs would have to put it up well the chiefs played a fine football game but what they ran into was a championship caliber defense a defense that said i don't care how many points we need we're going to we get we're going to keep the chiefs from getting anything that's going to beat us so the browns go down on a knee and they'll just let the clock run out the handshakes around are pretty much going to wrap this one up [Applause] and we talked about who the heroes in this football game have been and certainly number 42 tim manoa and of course it's time for a most valuable player award sponsored by budweiser there he is tim manoa from the cleveland browns who came in as a replacement for the injured kevin mack and responded magnificently budweiser makes a contribution to the united way on behalf of all the mvps selected in today's game we're going now to the seattle denver game gary gerald for reggie rucker final score cleveland six kansas city three [Music] it's good we'd like to welcome those viewers who have just joined us in the cleveland kansas city game this is don quickie with bob trumpy chuck knox and his seahawks an underdog coming in built up a 21-7 lead now in the fourth quarter maybe a disputed play it looked like the receiver was out of bounds and came back in elway hits mark jackson for a touchdown that gets the broncos back in the game they trailed 21-14 with 4 14 to play he didn't look like he had one foot out of bounds through the
