him a job in 96 he retired he went into television and he went into the granite business he was building kitchen countertops and then Dennis Green said come on back into football on 97 be the backup to Brad Johnson Johnson could heard at the end of last season he got it into a playoff win over the Giants Johnson heard again week two this year they expect him back at the end of October but the meantime Randall has been great one thing about Randall Chris is that we remember him as the freelancing wild Randall now he's more of like the pocket conservative Randall but he's still a very effective Randall age you'll do that too yeah that's for sure have a good game and of course you talked about the freelancing Randall remember 10 years ago this week Monday Night Football Randall Cunningham hurtling over Giants linebacker Carl banks throwing a touchdown pass as his Eagles beat Parcells Giants here he is back on center stage a marvelous story now in the home depot outside the receiver is a tempting to outrun a world of doubt with the pass that included jail time and a positive drug test the enormous lay talented Moss was still around when the Vikings have the 21st pick in the draft then in Camp wide receiver Chris Carter player who beat a drug addiction willingly offered his services as a coach and the counselor providing moss evidence every day that a past need not claim the future Tuesday is an off day for most mental health teams and each Tuesday at Lord Fletcher's on Lake Minnetonka Chris Carter and Randy Moss share dinner two days earlier the work in progress that is Randy Moss had faced the Chicago Bears to be a great player I want him to be regarded as one of the greatest receivers ever to play the game see that's French chill that's that tough was business as usual for Brett Favre five touchdown passes 27 completions for 388 yards but three interceptions two sacks eight knock downs a little ugliness a lot of brilliance and a ton of heart hi Brett Favre steps on the field this little boy comes out and this little boy plays with reckless abandon he takes chances he throws the ball all over the place he has so much confidence in his arm and I suspect tonight that little boys gonna have a lot of fun against the 27th ranked pass defense in the Minnesota Vikings Dan though the Vikings have stopped far before when they did it how did they stop them well they did it Chris by being disruptive up front one of the things that really key and on tonight is the cat-and-mouse game where will John Randle be tonight normally he's at that under defensive tackle for the Vikings tonight he'll started defensive end they're going to move him all over trying to get him loose to get the Brett Favre one thing the Packers and the Vikings both agree on that is the fact the Viking corners have trouble covering it's at 22 25 yard depth if they don't pressure Favre it could be a big night for the Packer passing game it could be a wild game have a good time guys up at Lambeau we going into week five by the way even though Minnesota is giving up a lot of yards keep this in mind they're the most interceptions in football with eight there are a and Brooks outside and shamora is the tight end then upfront verba Rivera winters Timmerman and Dotson the offensive line and on the kickoff Jeff Thomason one of the Green Bay's special teams players and a backup tight end needs some attention and the Packers can ill afford the loss of somebody like a Thomason if there's been one small in the Green Bay armor this season it's been on special teams it gives us a moment to take a look at the defense now for the Minnesota Vikings Colin a starts with Boyle Williams and as Dan mentioned during the pregame show Randall moving from tackle to end and back and forth Edwards McDaniel and Rudd by the linebackers and the suspect secondary fuller Hitchcock came over from New England then Griffith and Thomas and it's a secondary that's been burned a lot but they've also intercepted a lot of passes this year it leads you to believe that they're that they're willing to gamble and go for the pick but I don't think that anybody on the Minnesota side of the field is happy with the way their deep coverage has been so far this year boomer well especially they you know they had two home games which were blowout so they had a lot of balls thrown against them so sometimes that skews the statistics but the thing that Denny green said at the top of the show is that 11 turnovers are forced by his defense or +7 that's why they're four know and seven of those actually eight of those have been interceptions so he feels very confident about the big playability of his secondary this will be an interesting test tonight because of the weather right now and three Raymond a little bit of pizzazz there after the 43 yard line and when your line blocks like that you can look pizzazzy can't you that's that's what that was and I would imagine that Raymond Harris is tired of hearing about Dorsey Levens and how they can't run the football he certainly wants to make a statement tonight everybody in the NFL is watching to see a great lead block you know that time by William Henderson and that's the type of things that you know the Packers got to get back to it they want to run the ball successfully first and ten at the 43 yard line far stepping off to his right and hitting Harris up to the 15-yard line remember Raymond Harris last year over a thousand yards with the Bears before his season ended with a broken leg and then it's ironic Edgar Bennett was here but with lemons as the ace guy Bennett decides to sign with Chicago that makes room for Harris that goes someplace else and Raymont winds up here he's been in the league five years out remembered when he first got started with the Bears the phrase ultrabac and because Raymont harris could do just about anything a Dave Wannstedt started calling again but he couldn't stay healthy second down to warm-up matches made by Robert Brooks who had back surgery this summer and because of that which doesn't practice he does not practice during the week but he plays on Sundays in Monday at right in and you and I have gone back and forth about this why is John Randall and right end as opposed to inside as a tackle and as a player when I was playing against John Randle and the Minnesota Vikings I wanted him far away from me well folks Fazzio the defensive coordinator is giving this a whirl putting him out at end I'm with you I think he's much more easily accounted for out at defensive end you can chip him with a back you can run away from him he's the coach and we're not second down this is Travis Jersey he's the fastest guy on the team to the 27 yard line a flag is and the United Way are building better communities for all of us Randall Cunningham in his second season with Minnesota took over when Brad Johnson was hurt the end of the second week has guided them to to complete game victories and with him in the back to your Robert Smith over a the blocker Reid and partner outside will see a lot of moss as well clever the tight ends juicy McDaniel Christie diction and stringer very good interior five from the 20-yard line Cunningham to put it up on first down and the passes under the throne Chris Carter's win is a flag down in the secondary 19 yards downfield they throw a flag Reed and Tyrone Williams were involved in that area [Applause] and goes against Green Bay [Applause] I would say that Chris Carter got away with one there see he actually gets out here and pulls Newsom by him and that actually wasn't the penalty phase fault right the penalty no was called what's on the far side of the field white dachshund Brown and Holliday the defensive line for Green Bay Koontz Bernardo Harris and Brian Williams with Newsom Williams Butler and sharper in a secondary their defense this year has been first and five it is Rob first and ten Robert Smith it stopped at the line of scrimmage by Brian Williams Robert Smith everybody knew this guy had a lot of talent he was a number one pick a few years ago the thing about Smith though is the durability factor and then last year he was able to stay healthy much of the season back on the team 93 it was in me 94 in played 14 games in 95 it was in an ankle 96 there was the knee again but out over five yards of carrying in this guy's outfit second down attendance is probably the fastest I'm the only other guy would be Randy Moore second down and 10 and Cunningham launches one Randy Moss there's a flag down for the moment it's a touchdown but there's a penalty marker down to the 19 yard line and this is coming back I'll tell you Mike prior number 39 is safety for the Green Bay Packers miss played that fall I'll tell you they caught him obviously quite a big break right here but you could just see the power that Randle playing Hamm still has in his own and Jerry Austin's microphone didn't work right there and one of those linemen is really happy let's see it let's see if we can see it right here on the end it looks like Todd's to see the left tackle made a tackle look at that acceleration boom but you could see Pryor actually was had a beat on the ball and just miss played it well he's saying thank you thank goodness I am a lucky guy and Fritz Shurmur just watching the news showed is 75 yard would be touchdown pass go Oh wasting leave it is second down and 20 from the 15 yard line with protection and coming hands going to go deep again Dublin coverage this time and backed away at the last instant Robert Heath was the intended receiver and Louie Butler was there along with Pat Carroll this is like punt pass and kick right here what is the harm Randle does have a habit of throwing the ball down the middle I will tell you that and he gets away with it because of the athleticism of his receivers this ball had no business going down the middle of a field like this well one thing I think this still shows that Leroy Butler nine years in the league at strong safety still has his legs he is right there maybe a half second early but Laroy can still motor you better hold on a purist secondary player because F balls coming boys third down and 20 from the 15-yard line that angles going to launch another one and it is Moss who can't make the catch single covered by Darren Sharper and there's another flag down up at the 38 yard line this was a third and 20 and it's going to go against the Packers and that'll be this illegal contact number 37 oh the deep end five yards automatic first down five yards but it may as well have been 20 yards because it's an automatic first down after a third and 20 Tyrone Williams number 37 he's working against Chris Carter and the contact after the five yards and actually you know Chris Carter is their type of receiver boomer he'll initiate the contact every time he will not back down and really as a quarterback you love to see that because you know that he is going to give you space what it looked like though I think the official it looked like Williams was going to fall down and he kind of pulled himself up right again by grabbing on to Carter second fall second such ball already on Williams six minutes into the game [Applause] to the ground with Robert Smith he takes it up to the 25-yard line he stopped there by the middle linebacker Bernardo Harris you know both of these quarterbacks guys you as a secondary player you have to be so alert and you cannot take your eye off of the guy that you're covering thinking that they're going to get sacked in the backfield they both possess the arm that throw it up down the field and there are receivers on both sides of the football that will come down with it second and six took a look at the Reverend Reggie white remember Reggie was thinking about retiring in the offseason that even called a press conference I of the first down Roy Butler thanks to stop but Reggie not only has not retired he's playing brilliantly he was serious about it until God intercede and in fact Santana Dotson was on his way for the retirement ceremony and I think a lot of people in the Packer organization we're looking forward to Reggie retiring not because they wanted to get rid of him but they knew that it was a struggle for him even to play at an average level what the nation for this future hall-of-famer this is a formation that the Packer is going to have a tough time defending no backs in the backfield for wide receivers and they gave it a David Palmer and the versatile one picks up a first down to the 34c with with Minnesota you've got Smith you've got the great wide outs and then you've got a kid like Palmer who comes in and does things like that that he has a much different situation I think here because among other things they have a bye week but then they have a Thursday night game so they actually play in ten more days at Detroit I think what will happen is they'll go in tomorrow they'll get chewed out they'll practice a little bit then I'll have to come back on Friday third down and one and that's caught up at the 17 by Chris Carter for a first down it's a funky kind of schedule for Green Bay they were off until the 15th at Detroit then they're off the following Sunday and don't play again until the 25th so in effect they're gonna play only one game over the next 19 days which is probably what they need to get help they have a few guys Nick but that last plate then you see it I mean it looks so simple right nice execution but but but Chris Carter goes down and picks the ball off the ground I mean it's you know these are the type of receivers they have there's the schedule of all the more than San Francisco comes in and he doesn't seem to tap dance off the field when they win either and he is as they would say one tough hombre as Smith carries the ball Denis has been through more personal travails and on and off in the field stuff in Minnesota in six years and yet he has survived and survived brilliantly and I asked him last night I said what was the worst time for you and he said a pretty turbulent six years and he said that whole lou holtz thing remember they had ten different owners and a couple of them apparently went to Holtz who quits at Notre Dame and the indication is that Holtz is going to get Dennis's job in Minnesota he said that was the bottom well that has to be I mean how could you take your team to the playoffs and in the middle of the season have to listen to that I mean it's football and that's the way big play defensive backs have to react and it was an adjustment for them boomer because in the game last week against Chicago they weren't getting over there absolutely and then so they got chastised I'm sure this week but they responded good for them third and 10 to tuck away then runs into the sidelines it is caught there by Schrader gets rammed at about short of the first down by two this is [Applause] you can see right here this is the interception by Griffith Brett tries to look him off and Griffith it knows where the ball is going and he goes after the football and he makes a terrific play that's a great play by a safety and Danny Green said at the top of the show he's and say we've been giving up a lot of yours but we have a lot of interceptions and to me and interceptions worth 100 yards you know you wonder if that's a spin or what is that you know well he's always wanted his guys to go for the big play Rizzoli's crafted and developed that well as we all know it's who's in front at the end of January so when you look at the NFC coming into this weekend I think you looked at the Vikings you looked at the Packers and you looked at the 49ers that's like the three real quality teams in the NFC well the 49ers lose at Buffalo the Packers get put away here tonight you'd have to say right now the Minnesota Vikings as of this moment clearly the best team in the NFC you know I still think in the end though however again because of how a week the NFC East is that Dallas is gonna be around you know they still have too much talent on that football team oh I don't argue that at all I'm saying the first week of October Dallas I don't think could handle the white no not right now maybe but I still believe looking at the talent on that team job you know that that's a team that you know scare me if I had to play them and Troy will be back oh yeah you know Jason Garrett's doing a heck of a job for them he's - and wani had a big game this past week against Washington but everybody seems to be having at the game against Washington but you know something you just this has nothing to do with Dallas but you look at Dallas and you see Michael Irvin and then well who do you see complimenting Michael Irvin and then you look at this receiving corps of the Vikings and it's it's all staggering nice effect and the Packers have recovered at the 45 Scott mogera hand comes up with the football so down by 2259 to play two-minute warning it would be American now that other the others have happened the other wonderful receiving for obviously out in San Francisco yes we're the Owens and rice and Stokes physically very reminiscent of this group here of course I don't have a bad guy Chuck in the old to eat out there either doing well you know every week there's going to be major upset so are upsets I would say this is probably a mild upset just because they're playing on Green Bay's field if this happened in Minnesota would be so surprised but yesterday buffalo beat San Francisco I mean no team is gonna go undefeated know that there's gonna be times where you're gonna have a really really rough week as a football player and as a football team and you just got to get through those and the teams that battle through those Dan as you well know are the ones that usually are left standing at the end of the year how about these are numbers that you just okay I've never say I've been there I know what that's all about you know you just forget it you file it you shake your head you know they still have so many more Cunningham a monster night 442 yards for the second week in a row four touchdown passes [Applause] he has another touch dad that goes straighter well this is one of those when they'll look at the box scores at the end of the year [Music] and this is what those games won't be nearly as close as it looks like and this is one of those quarters that just makes the stats look off so when you start analyzing things and you start looking at them and you wonder it where a lot of the yards and points come from this is the third game that's been in a blowout situation for them it's a nice throw by Peterson Peterson pled down to two touchdowns I guess he's a new starter [Applause] [Music] we're just going to break at the breath get no quarterback controversy Minnesota just one hearing beat right now today you know it was interesting about what Denny green said yesterday he talked about how he makes all his players know what their roles are on this football team and I guess that's why he was so strong in his statement that he said that when Brad Johnson comes back he'll be our quarterback Randall knows his role we talked about roles and I guess if it's up front and everybody understands it then you know it heads the controversy off of the pass a little bit but I just don't think you can take a guy like Brad Johnson who you're paying him the kind of money you're paying the way he played Hey he's played terrific I don't discount that I mean the Vikings are very fortunate to have two players that play that position that can put up numbers like this it's not happening everywhere you know sooner or later you know it doesn't matter what you're paying anybody I mean ultimately they got to perform and if another guy is performing at such a high level [Applause] I just coaches employees at the lid week by week you can't milk it ten years [Applause] Adira coast sidekick at this time it's Minnesota that's Chris wolf played for a Dennis Green when Dennis was coaching at Stanford and has ridden the trail with him Joe ever get hurt and your backup was playing pretty well what happened when you came back oh you know then there's pressure there's a lot of pressure on you because the fans you know they know what they see or they think they know what they see and if if you put Brad Johnson in there and there's a little bit of faltering going on and it's not really moving there oh then immediately the fans want the guy that was in there that was moving the football or playing well so it's hey but then they've got what they already know they have a guy who can come off the bench and lead the team this guy's a good quarterback right there Brad Johnson so I it's it's a situation that I guess any coach would love to have as long as your team is winning wait till Brad finds out you want him to stay on the bench room oh you would - let me go over how bread which boomer just said it's Leslie still here I think she left look Mosley's in the salon but seriously I mean how and I'm not saying that in the show that it's gonna be this way for the next three or four weeks but on tonight's performance I mean this is final and there hasn't been a lot of great quarterback performances thus far but nothing like this I'll bet you at any hopes he has that problem right I'm sure he does nice dilemma to have an off week from Minnesota coming up the Vikings are five and oh they're the only unbeaten team in the NFC and they've come into Lambeau Field and handed Green Bay defeat for the first time in Green Bay since September 3rd 1995 25 regular season games and four postseason games and the Vikings have come in and a routed the Packers final score 37 to 24 we will wrap it up crumbles in a moment broke joe Montana's single-game passing record against the Packers Randall how do you describe this game I just I just thank God you know so many people you know who praying for me and just hoping that I do well I'm just giving God all the glory and all the honor I don't take any for myself I thankful for the people who surrounds me with is such a humbling experience and the Bible says humble yourself therefore under the Lord's mighty hand that he may lift you up and do in due time and I just want to be lifted up so I can praise God that's right Randall this wasn't for the NFC Championship but what does it mean to the Minnesota Vikings well it's great because you know it's there's times when things changed and and you know we have a little bit of control but the main thing is that when you're around great people like the great coaching staff we have an offensive line and and the players we have me Randy and Chris Randy sent straight from God and Chris has already been here than God and I just thank him for the defense you know we've just got a great opportunity to do a lot of things we just prayed us still healthy and just continually you talked about change how have you changed I'm saying what God has humbled me and when you're humbled through different experiences in your life and you get down in the pits with the people who really work hard each day you learn to be thankful for everything you have you know when I receive awards and things like that I appreciate them so much now and I'm thankful that I've got a great family my wife and my wife bliss you know little Randall and little bashed I think I thank we'll take a look at Cunningham going to those weapons nope not real picky he's just okay first of all I'll go to Jake Reed I know Craig Newsome is a pretty good cornerback but that doesn't matter I'll go to him and Reed just wants the ball a lot more than this not bad coverage again he goes to Randy Moss and the thing about tonight Kenny is that there wasn't bad coverage that time he does jump a little higher than Williams but not a lot higher for the size difference not a big deal there and all of a sudden let's make the Packers think they're getting a pass rush but then we'll throw a screen Robert Smith goes all the way for a touchdown Randall can launch the ball like 80 something yards some of those though was an under throw and sometimes intentionally where the guys would leap up and make the play just making the play harder well that's like I mentioned they wanted the ball more than the defenders did and that was the difference they weren't in bad position but they didn't look for the ball and part of the reason why he could have the time to pick out which one he's gonna go to get such great protection as well well before the season started they talked about the Vikings offensive line as being one of the best in the league and I think tonight they proved that they are one of the best look at this has time to look step-through hits Carter no pressure he goes lineman I say you stayed with Randall Cunningham because he has the offense moving he throws for over 400 yards against the number one defense in the league let Brad Johnson sit a little bit and if Randall sputters then you might go back to Brad Johnson but right now I say stay with Randall and would you have me or Dan Patrick to the next story in the show after I saw that swim move I haven't seen you throw the football maybe I'll just hold off on that for a minute well it's scripted for Dan is packed here you guys throw was a big confidence game for so yeah I think we had some some little dog that we really couldn't do this and I mean everybody was nobody was against us you know we always kind of believed inside the locker room and coming in to the environment coming out with a win him that's the truth vikings made quick work of that defense minnesota scored 20 more points than Green Bay's defense have been allowing per game 442 passing yards 544 5 2 or other yards BB 5 4 or 5 total offense more than double what the Packers usually allow in Minnesota was letting up toward the end there was an outright since we live it seems like a 3 week but last week we noticed an old
