the Panthers battle for a playoff spot a live reports following a tiger game presentation of ABC sports this year from Sarajevo Yugoslavia to Los Angeles California the ABC Olympic tradition continues ABC sports presents Monday night baseball tonight Tiger Stadium it's the New York Yankees against the Detroit Tigers Dave Winfield leading the anka tack hitting 336 Alan Trammell the sensational shortstop for the Tigers who lead the East by 6 warm buggy night in Detroit again the Tigers on Monday night baseball Dave Bergman hit that dramatic homerun two weeks ago to get this series started and then we watch Detroit beat Toronto again last Monday and the Tigers have been hot they have won eight of 11 they should go over the million mark and home attendance by Thursday good crime looking on tonight as the Yankees come to town hello again everyone I'm Al Michaels and tonight in Tiger Stadium the Yankees will be taking on Detroit for the first time this season the Tigers get off to the best start in the history of baseball at least through 40 games as you know they were thirty five and five and they did most of the damage against the Western Division teams and the skeptics said well whether they faced the tougher teams in the Eastern Division in particular Baltimore in Toronto well Detroit over the past two weeks has played mainly Baltimore on Toronto and they've done quite nicely thank you as Clarkie Anderson likes to point out they've just taken two weeks off the schedule they still have a pretty sizable lead at this point six games over Toronto with Baltimore 11 and a half back the Yankees we la get off to a dastardly start they fell well behind very early have been playing a little bit better of late but still 19 back in the middle of June a long way to go it would take a miracle for New York to win it let me turn to Jim Palmer and ask you about the talent on this Yankee a lot of people seem to feel it's a better team and they've shown others say well maybe they just don't have that talent they're not as good as Baltimore to run away Detroit how do you assess their talent visa vie those three teams well I don't think they rate with the other three teams that you mentioned Toronto and the Tigers in Baltimore in my estimation are the best three teams in baseball the Yankees unfortunately are in the same division the problem with the Yankees of course is they started off very poor offensively in their first 38 games they were shut out ten times their pitching staff is in total disarray they only have two reliable starters ku Scotchies was lost to free-agency went to San Diego and Dave Righetti who has done a good job but is now on disabled list with a cut index finger and then if you couple that with the fact that defensively the worst team in the American League you have a lot of problems they're a better team and they've been playing and as you said they've been hot lately but I expect them to improve but I'm not sure if they reliable starters have been Phil Niekro and Ron Guidry and Wilson Negro seeking his tenth win tonight what would a season in New York be without a manager controversy and know that people are speculating that Yogi Berra will be gone no doubt somebody will right this week that burl Weaver will take over he will refute it no doubt but let me ask you when he would take a job I'm not going to take the job I'm going to be in the booth all year so there is no chance you'll be the manager of the Yankees before the end of this season what about somebody else in your estimation well there's been two names mentioned and one of the reasons for the speculation is the fact that for the last six years the Yankees have changed managers in midseason Billy Martin's name has been mentioned and Billy managed the club last year won 91 ballgames and naturally his name is going to come up a new name that hit the papers this week was Lou Piniella when he retired but I don't think it would be smart for Lou to take a club like this in the middle of the year I think he might be being groomed to see what happens observe what happens see what holes need to be filled and I think he might be under consideration for the job next year I think this is a better team than they've shown to this point there are much better team than they showed at this point but they have to go out on a field and prove it and like Jim said I don't think that they can win enough games to become a contender this year all right last week we started a feature Earl Weaver on baseball we'll continue this week as Earl looks at one of his favorite subjects the subject of our hitting the say VC's force exclusive is brought to you by Wagner the right tool for painting and by Gatorade thirst quencher Gatorade is Thursday for that deep down body burst right now your body's thirsty for more than water look at your body till you can't do small iterated birthday to give your body what it's thirsty for Gatorade [Music] when you exercise you lose foods and minerals Gatorade put them back back it's no ordinary person when church gets Thursday Gatorade first aid be found by dispersed [Music] 17 hours that's how long it took us to paint this house with a brush then we painted it in just six and a half hours with the Wagner power painting this wicker chairs of over and out of less than five minutes with a Wagner power a shudder that took 20 minutes powerful finish can only treat it's a tool so versatile it has a flexible spray tip and a way to draw paint right from a can power it's the right tool for painting on the baseball fan comes out to the ballpark senses hard-earned money he wants to see all facets of the game if he possibly can the pitcher's duel the stolen base the triple in the gap the great defensive play by the shortstop or the center fielder possibly the squeeze fund to win a ball game but the most exciting thing in baseball the thing that brings the fans to their feet is when that home run hitter comes up to the plate with the game on the line and puts it into the seat takes four ingredients to build a championship Club it takes good pitching good defense certain amount of speed and it takes power to me power is the most important of all we can go back and look at the 27 Yankees with Babe Ruth Lou Gehrig these two players led an attack that many people believe was the most powerful ever in baseball history I'd like to manage those guys Roger Maris joined Mickey Mantle in the Yankees in 1960 adding more punch June already potent lineup in 1961 the Yankees hit a major league record 200 to 40 home runs Mantle had 54 Maris had a record-setting 61 homers for a team that won a hundred and nine games in the World Series in the early 70s the Oakland A's featured great power in pitchy young Reggie Jackson sparked a team that won three consecutive world championships from 1972 to 1974 what a managers dream to put names like Johnny Bench Tony Perez and George Foster on your lineup court every night that's why the Big Red Machine won their division six out of ten years in the 70s in the last 25 years only three teams made it to the World Series without without power in each case they were exceptional in the other category the 1959 gogo White Sox led the league in stolen bases and no go-get-'em style was good enough to win the American League the Los Angeles Dodgers in the mid-60s were known for their lack of power but were better known for their tremendous pitching Sandy Koufax Don Drysdale and Ron perranoski they won the World Series in nineteen two five two years ago the st. Louis Cardinals like a White Sox in 59 and the 65 Dodgers finished last in the majors in home run however their good pitching an exceptional team speed was well-suited to today's artificial surfaces and the Cardinals won the World Series a year before the Cardinals the Oakland A's famous Billy ball team was nationally known for their speed and finesse but I'm sure Billy himself will tell you that they led the major leagues in home run and that helped them get to the championship series the bun will always be a big part of the game but for me I'd rather see the ball go out the park my philosophy was to win with the three-run homer I did have two Baltimore Oriole teams 1973-1974 that won their division was speed but the Baltimore Oriole teams that I managed from 1969 to 1971 and 1979 all went to the World Series with a powerful attack guys like Frank Robinson and Boog Powell can change the complexion of a game with one swing of the bat those guys made it real easy to manage and Brooks Robinson could do the same thing when he was not there at third base making great plays like this so now it shouldn't surprise you to know that last year's World Champion Orioles led the major leagues in home run take a look at the division leaders this season and you'll see all the leaders are at or near the top of their league in home run no matter who the names are on the line of course the principle is the same good pitching speed and defense but you've got to have power you think I'm tough this is tough - y'all Bri they know what man this stuff is something else tr3 goes on easy stays on hard makes your car beautiful like me tr3 I talk to enemies like dirt Sun glad you won't tough this is tough tr3 take it from me mr. T say goodbye to America's favorite can of motor oil that quake estate quality America is trusted for over 70 years now comes exclusively in this unique easy to pour a plastic bottle made to cost you nothing extra come on folks see you dirty hands goodbye oily rag no more leaky cans get Quaker State's 10 grain protection and no mess easy to open pour and reseal today you need an oil this good in a package is screwed as we get set for the Yanks from the Tigers earlier today the US Open golf playoff was held in Mamaroneck New York Buzzy's other as you know tied with Greg Norman after 72 hopefully yesterday Zeller won by eight strokes trouble started for Norman on the second hole today to detail it Jim McKay well the troubles of Greg Norman actually began in the second hole after each man had birdied the first he put his tee shot here and he had no shots of the green because of those trees he had a layup and that's what he did very intelligently with a long way to go in his playoff we've expected a classic confrontation after the spirited play and determination of yesterday there was Norman here was his third shot now Zeller was already on the green albeit about well they better measure distance any 268 feet from the flank steak there was Greg Norman shot long he'd need that for the par 4 so it looked like he would lose a stroke unless fuzzy Zeller might free putt from a long distance like this look how far that putt was well he didn't freak but the matter pipes you didn't do fight he dropped it in the hole a putt longer than the one that Norman has made on a scene yesterday and Zeller had thrown down the first challenge over to you and here is where Greg Norman admitted later he made of thinking mistake he charged the Cup downhill trying to save a stroke instead of which he pushed it that far past now it's good of having a tap-in for a bogey 5 buzz he enjoyed his birdie he had a tough one for the bogey 5 which he didn't make a 6 to 3 for Zeller and there was a three-stroke swing between that early on the second hole if ever a championship was decided on the second hole I think this was it because it set the tone from there on it was fuzzy Zeller all the way and when they asked them at the end what would you like on the trophy Bryce urban Zeller your name or fuzzy he says make it fuzzy it's gonna be the only fuzzy on [Music] and here at Tiger Stadium the Yankees coming in to face the Detroit Tigers who lead the American League East the man they're calling father time Phil Niekro 9 and 3 177 tra against the veteran right-hander Milt Wilcox on the mound for the Detroit Tigers we'll be right back an ABC News brief brought to you by Budweiser beer now for Washington Ted Koppel good evening speaking at a UN conference on South Africa Jesse Jackson today strongly criticized American foreign policy saying four million Israelis receive more American aid than half a billion Africans and Jackson said Africa must be placed on the front burner of America's agenda well the Mondale has announced he'll hold his first vice presidential interview with Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley this Thursday an international controversy has erupted over the death of two wealthy Americans and the two frozen embryos from the couple now being held in an Australian hospital tonight on Nightline the world's first test-tube orphans will examine the legal and ethical issues now this this buzz for everyone who scrapes it sprays it and lays it on smooth [Music] it's country last year brief more news later on this ABC station she says she's unpredictable she's Delia she's back on Ryan's Hope there's a new gasoline that will eliminate knocking in virtually every car in the road and it's coming it's a gasoline that will help get top performance out of your car and it's coming it's the highest octane sold by any major oil company in America and it's coming but it's not coming from amico or Shell or mobile or marathon it's coming from Sunoco new 93.5 ultra the ultimate in octane and you can get it now one of the new orders of Eastern Airlines last time you make connections at st. Louis at Eastern we earn our wings every day city feet are getting ready for the Grand Prix one of our stories that's for the Tigers Monday night baseball tonight the New York Yankees against the Detroit Tigers is being brought to you by drones and strolling fire brewed for smooth taste by Chevrolet with the performance the style the innovation the quality of the value that make up today's Chevrolet my coachman recreational vehicles leader to the outdoors and by mr. Goodwrench and General Motors points Al Michaels along with Jim Palmer and Earl Weaver at Tiger Stadium in Detroit with the matchup tonight is Phil Niekro for the Yankees and Milt Wilcox on the mound for Detroit and the Tigers if you haven't noticed or - the services at least temporarily of their race right-hander Jack Marsh the winningest coach from the league has missed at least one start Jim we don't know when he'll be back again they're hopeful by the weekend or perhaps by even Thursday night but what would the loss of Jack Morris for awhile mean to this team well it I don't think it's going to be devastating because they have a good pitching staff dan Petry has done a fine job the guy we're going to be seeing tonight Milt Wilcox has been struggling over his last five games but over the course of the last six seasons he's pitched pretty well form if they would miss Morris for a month or so it would really cause some problems but they have a great offense they have a deep pitching staff as far as the the acquisition of Willie Hernandez and of course Aurelio Lopez who's done a fine job in the bullpen so it's not like they don't have pitchers to take Jack Morris's place they miss Mars for a month or so you may get a call to spark yeah well I hope so yeah would you take it I mean would you accept the iPod on this road if it was a if you reverse the charges I might have to think about it well we'll see what happens meanwhile let's talk about Phil Niekro with Earl Weaver and a man who was given up on by the Atlanta Braves he had only pitched for the Braves during his major league career resurrected at the age of 45 and he looks as good now as he ever has well I think there's one thing that's helping them I think the American League hitters first time around since they hadn't seen me throw they're chasing that knuckleball on the first pitch and tonight I'm looking to see if Sparky Anderson kicks to take on maybe the hitters can work to count to one a no 2 and I'll get themselves a fastball or a slider here because last year Negro walked 5 points out none provoking and this year he's only walking two men for nine innings to match it up tonight Negro takes on Wilcox the Yankees and the Tigers coming up from Detroit scourge enters next big league pitcher and loves certifier brood strobes see what I mean that was his fastball that was the curve wild pitch what is that relief pitcher strolls and stroll like fire brewed for smoother taste this is today's Chevrolet make your move to Chevrolet's new celebrity move into the comfort of more passenger room than 101 lot of 106 import guns move into celebrity and attraction of front-line our celebrity no other new car gives you this much passenger room at a price this low celebrity more to boot that's today's Chevrolet people tend to confuse me with the roles I play which is ridiculous because I'm not a neat freak for example I just got a beta zoom copier from an Ulta but not because I can add toner without getting that disgusting black powder all over my hands no I got a banal debate assume because it takes this mess of different sized originals and gives back copies in one neat size automatically but that doesn't make me a neat freak of course not a slob either like the beta zoom copiers only from the mind of the noldor the world series where a pitch is not just the cake it's a world series patience where I guess is not just the history it's a world series a win is not just a win it's a World Series win now you've got a chance to win a trip to the 1984 World Series by entering Major League Baseball's Grand Slam sweepstakes at all major league ballparks and participating retailers baseball favorite catch it the preceding message was furnished by major league baseball Yankee lineup tonight has Willie Randolph leading off at second base and then butch winegar who's been very hot does the catching in bat second Don Mattingly is the league's leading hitter he'll hit third and the designated hitter is the right-hand batting Don Baylor with Dave Winfield who's been hot in right field batting fifth Steve temps out a good June he's in left field the number six hitter the switch-hitting Roy Smalley is the third baseman Ken Griffey has dropped down into the eighth bond in the lineup and the recently recalled Bobby Meacham is the shortstop batting ninth and for the Detroit Tigers as they get set to take the field they'll get a nice ovation from a good crowd at Tiger Stadium it rains this afternoon we had a couple of showers in the middle part of the afternoon and then after we arrived at the ballpark it began to rain the field was covered so neither team was able to take batting practice or infield as you look at the Detroit Tigers who have to be very very pleased the way things have gone because we were here two weeks ago or la knew they had a tough stretch ahead as you look at Tiger Stadium 365 to left-center and 375 or the salient that here's the dimensions to the powell rally and the tiger girl has to be quite pleased the way things are gun oh it says OSHA farming like farts and said two weeks off the schedule maintain relief six games over Toronto so they're riding high right now eight of their last 11 including a weekend sweep over the struggling Milwaukee Brewers defensively they have Dave Bergman at first base with Darrell Evans as the D H tonight and they are very strong up the middle with Lou Whitaker the Gold Glove second baseman and Alan Trammell who's been in a slump at the plate but still doing very well in the field as always the shortstop at third base they're going with barbaro garbey because squawky feels that he hits breaking ball as well and thus he'd have a better shot than Howard Johnson at Negros mutlar that Sparky's logic Larry Herndon has really been struggling this season but he gets discarded left field he's trying to get on track and center fielders chant Lemmon who is the leading bull Couture amongst American League outfielders for the all-star team we could very well see him in the line of a candlestick on July 10th and Kirk Gibson is in right field he's lifted his average to 276 back of the plate is Lance Parrish who has the build of arnold schwarzenegger and on the mound is Milt Wilcox who is 34 years old born in Honolulu but moved to the mainland when he was very young started his career in the big leagues with Cincinnati in 1971 Sparky Anderson was there then he moved to Cleveland briefly to the Cubs men came to the Tigers in 1977 the umpire is tonight John Hirschbeck is back of the plate with Steve Palermo at first Dave Phillips at second injury new deck for third and Jim you've had numerous chances in your career to watch Wilcox pitch what about well he's not overpowering now he has been struggling in his last 24 anything's given up 19 runs after starting off the season six and oh I think they what that illustrates is that he certainly doesn't have a lot of confidence the club was playing so well the Tigers purses we talked got off to the 35 and five start last couple weeks even though they are hot after sweeping the Brewers this last week and they have been struggling a little bit and really depends on how well he pitches tonight whether they're going to the Yankees as we said are also hitting well and you have a guy here Willie Randolph one of the excellent leadoff hitters in the game well they Randolph is 15 for his last 30 Willie likes to look for that fastball on the first pitch and Wilcox got a good looking curve ball over to Randolph at a home run of the 10th inning a spent away the other night that was the wild one that the Yankees pulled out 12 to 11 one ball one strike will he's lifted his average with this recent surge up over the 300 mark at 307 with two homers 10 RBIs of course the most important thing for a leadoff batter is he's walked 38 times he has an on-base percentage right around 40% and that's what you want to leadoff guy to do for your Valka broken bat looper into left field for a base hit and it's the old adage when you're hot you're hot when you're 15 to 30 you break your back you still get a visa get a good break involved good curveball on the outside half of the plate and hit him right on the end of the bat now butch winegar who comes up with the longest current hitting streak in the big leagues 15 games that's the longest of his career and he said 377 over that stretch Yankees moved him into that number 2 spot which was somewhat unusual for a catcher you don't see where any catcher is hitting there the winegar did hit second on occasion with the Minnesota Twins he's the type of hitter you would want it at second now of course you have the situation where Randolph's being held at first base by Dave Bergman you have that hole he can pull the ball I felt when he came up he did a lot more home runs than he has want to know the count they talked about winegar in the same breath with Johnny Bench when he first came up he hasn't had benches power but the one thing that butch winegar does make you do as a pitcher is throw strikes he can walk he as a good eye doesn't get as we said for many home runs an area saw Wilcox's movie as one of the better pitching moves I wouldn't really call it a balk move but he has a quickjump and it's hard to get a particularly good lead off will gosh Randolph Bluffs going and the pitch is outside the Yankees do very little running Randolph with five steals this season they're leading base the other with the Omar Moreno was playing for time he has seven and the Yankees as a team have only 22 more than a third of the way into the season Randolph is going in winegar lines at the center field lemon is racing back hit there and makes the back wheels and fire is and burthen has to come up the line hit the throw is Randolph gets five hits that's all real well not many balls are going to get over Ted lemon said it goes back very well well Chet lemon is the type of outfielder that you watch the tip to throw the ball to home plate the hitter gets good wood on it and by the time you look up lemons in full stride after that baseball on your right it takes a lot get one over his head and you got a lot of room here to 440 the straightaway center now Don Mattingly an emerging star Mattingly last year was called up by the Yankees from Columbus the day Bobby Murcer retired he'd been with him prior to that but had been sent out and he's not only won a spot on the roster he's going to line up he's getting third he's leading the league at 338 and when I watched him two years ago in spring training he didn't look like the fact the hitter got the swing to hit with any power especially a number three hitter now he's got 10 home runs 40 RBIs and fans from dividend City Randolf at first base and Mattingly takes his place [Applause] he'll go with the pitch you'll go to left-field falls outside of down the middle it will hit it up the middle and if it's on the inside half the play-doh try to hit up with with a little power he's about as hot as Granville Mattingly ten for his last pudding on the gap as a human wave begins with Jenny Tiger Stadium [Applause] whoa they started this early in the season when the Tigers were hot we saw it Toronto there it is the in unison section-by-section the crowd rising seven aerobic exercise I don't know they do it enough they can get on exercise you think it's the last time we were in here with must have seen it twice in inning [Applause] well the difference between here in Toronto the Toronto fans did it when the trial players were in the field same thing here right now in the first home team in the field [Applause] two balls one strike the count [Applause] Nelligan burn situation here two balls one strike three balls one rifle domestic ng gonna I think one of the biggest problems that Milt Wilcox have had it he's been very funny he's trying to mimic the outside corner with his basketball and he hasn't been able to do it over the last five games that's drilled in the gap in right-center field and it is off the fence Randolph was running all the way so he is we're going to carry doubles I Mattingly that was a good play all around good bass hunting by Willie Randolph Chet lemon played the ball well off of the fence we'll get to watch it again Saul said harden again Randolph casinos in there and he's gone lemon gets the ball right off to the fence take the time a good throw to the cutoff Whitaker got the ball struck in the club just for a second Parrish trying to block the plate but Randolph got in there's another angle off the wall you can see where he got the ball caught right there a good throw to home plate guess that little hesitation probably cost the room you're right made the difference one to nothing New York Mattingly with his 41st RBI and the batter is Don Baylor who looks at the strike Baylor hitting 259 sailors been high we're driving in better than a run a game for about three weeks now and the Yankee tonight electing to go with him even with a right-hander working when dr. gamble would be a possible to ace if you wanted a left-handed batting th of course Oscar's really struggling hitting 148 I went up to Donna did you know last year you hit 364 against left-handers and only 264 against right-handers he said well that's because I didn't base you that much last year but really Don Baylor I've always felt even though statistics may lie is always been a tough out for right-handed pitcher if he has any Bowl it's up and in but when he's hot tucked it's really difficult to get the ball there they are swimming his foul and the count no balls and two strikes on time when valor time it looks like he gets the catch of time to know knows exactly what pitch the pitcher is throwing what he's going to do with it hankies on top over the weekend they lost two out of three to Baltimore prior to that the Series in Fenway providing a lot of dramatics high-scoring typical fenway affairs strikes to fix coming up to Baylor is outside wanted to account there's that high pitch he's very close to see it right here just a little bit up on the strike zone but right where he wanted to throw I think the difference Johnny Baylor when he's hot is the delays offensive breaking pitch a liner on one hot Mike Randall nicely frozen eyes and Mattingly goes to third well eating Trammell up but Allen staying right with it giving with it and making the plate nice play by this workshop who is having a great year an outstanding Flynn it looked like Baylor was sitting on that surface Oh Sidharth short hops travel only a good shortstop stays with that ball keeps his eye right down into the glove now he knows he has it in a good flow to first date so mattingly a third two down Yankees lead one nothing indeed Winfield is second in the league in hitting behind Mattingly David 336 is two points from the league Tramell has dropped to fifth by the way batting average other system hard-hit fall different what about account Wilcox is not born no isn't and again I think as a pitcher of course you want to stay out of the beginning and even though Steve Kemp on deck has been hot he knows that Winfield has been swinging the bat really well and was a see if he pitches to him here want a gown look I get off to a great practice year and it destroyed he get parallel zucchini was six and OH is in the ER am just a little bit more than three here you see a low fastball Dave Winfield being six six you think his knees are just a little bit higher than that high fat or that low fastball the Wilcox one and one with them and it's grounded to the right side where who hit they leave Mattingly occurred after a half if the Yankees won and the Tigers coming up Stu Stu do you know how I can get this big package to Seattle overnight yeah I don't know finger let's go up and bounce it off boomer gosh I don't know fellas let's go ahead and run it by Rizzo let's braid this past Pullman let's waltz it by whimpers let's dance it by dolt if more people knew Federal Express handles great big packages even a door honey what about bow it sure would save everybody a whole lot of problem last year while you were deciding which home computer to take home stairs bolted on more than Indian market while you were trying on the latest Goolagong activewear Sears sold over nine million times and while you were checking out Sears Open Home Collection we replace more batteries than anyone else in America so next time you drive over to Sears drive right in we install confidence there's Mario [Music] for the Detroit Tigers tonight as usual it is Lou Whitaker who leads off at second base Alan Trammell has been in a slump but he's still batting 322 hits second Kirk Gibson the big right fielder bats third and then Lance Parrish who has 10 homers this season is the cleanup hitter Darrell Evans acquired as a free agent over the winter bats 50:58 with Chet Lemmon in centerfield batting sixth then Larry Herndon bat seventh the tiger left fielder Dave Bergman the hero two weeks ago with a home run against Toronto hits eighth and barbaro garbey plays through tonight it's time that for the Yankees back of Negro it's Mattingly at first Randolph at second Bobby Meacham is the shortstop and Roy Smalley at third camp and left former tiger Ken Griffey in centered Dave Winfield and right with winegar back of the plate and 45 year old Phil Niekro released by Atlanta following the season he had spent his entire career with the Braves into walking in Atlanta and it picked up by the Yankees and what an acquisition that's turned out to be is the without Niekro would really be dire straits he's won nine degrees one five and no other Yankee fixture has won more than two we've had an incredible start and 13 out of his 14 starting starts he felt the opposition less than three runs in ten of those two run he's just as you said it really then almost the entire Yankee pitching staff in his 25th professional season he goes to work on Lou Whitaker with lots of bunt takes low wanna go and here you see the knuckleball it's going to dance all around winter grrrrrr again being one of the better leadoff men in baseball the 30 walks as they're all said in the pregame show we're going to see if he's going to make Phil Niekro throw the ball over the plate for his rank of the count is wanted one only new pictures in the American League throw the knuckleball regularly the other beam Charlie hopper Texas occasionally aim Quisenberry the Royals will be fools around doing what account this kind of wonder I know the Negro has never ever been a good starter until this season Charlie Hough of course got off to a rendus start and now is really riding American League Pitcher of the month of June Randolph who throws Whitaker out so one second baseman takes care the other we're out number one in the first inning and Alan Trammell will be coming go could have forgot a head to count filling one and he got his fastball to hit and get it hard then Randolph made a nice play Alan Trammell has been leading the league in hitting anyone into a slump he was old for 21 prior to getting a basic yesterday in Milwaukee and he's 1 for his last 23 as you can see still hitting 322 and takes a strike on the inside corner on one squawky Anderson who turned 50 earlier this season been here since 79 as travel dates outside Walden 1 and Yogi Berra who's seen as 19 games back whose coke pitching coach Sammy Ellis was sent to the minors in effect 1 & 2 Sammy Ellis who along with Jeff floorboard happened the Yankee pitching coaches was bent down to be the minor-league instructor and also their bullpen coach Jerry McMurphy was in essence farmed out today as well travel down on strikes two down here we see the one into knuckleball trammel trail goes after it it just darts away [Applause] well if he gets ready and you have to feed three of those things you're going to be lucky to get good wood on the ball batter is Kirk Gibson hitting 276 crystal fill you in on the Yankee changes and they've made some roster changes in the past week we mentioned McNerney and Ellis going down in effect the home list has been added to the Yankee coaching staff is gifted a two-strike they'll join the team tomorrow more Connor will join the team and he has been the pitching coach at Columbus he'll be the co pitching coach with homework 1 & 1 so look into the Yankee dugout where they've done some shuffling on the roster in the past week with a retirement of Piniella at all and we'll detail that as we have time and by the way obviously Yogi Berra was not too pleased in particular about Ellis's devotion to it one oh god yes to have the people that he wants with him he doesn't have much of a shot or the Yankee pitching has been much of the mind and Daniel has defended him to the hilt apparently it did not fit well with some of the people in New York two balls two strikes word on mcnerney is that one of the reasons he may have been devoted was Dave Righetti cutting his finger yesterday if you haven't heard sliced his index finger on the water cooler in the bullpen he's on the disabled list by the way and Righetti been doing a great job in relief but as far as the closer the short man is concerned now for the Yankees on the where better look well 19 games out you do some experimenting see what you can do try to get yourself realigned for next year not that the Yankees are giving up at this time of year because they certainly aren't it there will be some experimenting two balls two strikes again throughout because se1 nothing Yankees in the bottom of the first inning praying through the Cal a lot of people say well if you can't hit that knuckleball why don't you try to punt it well guess who just tried to bunt and it's no easier to punt than it is to hit so full count Iran purchase Emily crying about it oh try to ball with two strikes deep right-field I gotta say it before the game Sparky Anderson tennis Negro hangs one it's going to wind up in the upper upper deck exist in well I can't really called out a hanger that's all good a little something we get to watch it right here that ball gentle it is something he's got Gibson out on his front forty he's to hold back the plane just a little bit that gets it on the third part of the bat when I'm in the ballpark I think I make that makes a statement for the type of ballpark that this game is being played and it the great hitters Park the background has always been either green or repose give the hitter a great view of the defense I was going to say I agree with you that was just a fly ball and a lot of ballparks in your home parish takes inside of course the wind is blowing out to right field so look at the dimensions here and they have an overhang in right field I think I'll probably spend eat that make it even easier this first over a lot by me grow the funeral [Music] we'd only allowed two home runs 101 anybody going into it well there's gypsum and I'll tell you that home run is a tribute to how strong the man was because he was fooled just a little bit we got out on the front foot we still had enough to get it up in the upper back after trying to put Dylan carry disease be the head of this on it [Applause] we go home he drew me three knuckle balls I thought I had each one of them zeroed in and each time the ball did something different Eric's fouling it away two balls two strikes the count one one time two out going on five of the first inning a lot of people are saying yeah primers the cheer of pitching that Palmer was a good hitter at the pitcher and when the pitchers hit he won a lot of ballgames for himself anchor fields do goodne who we talking about Negro revealed you not only had a good manager I would have run for a kiss right that and that's the first inning Iran and hit justice over after 101 one time will return to tied to stadium right after this word from your local station a profile of America's Chief Justice Warren burger tomorrow on ABC's World News Tonight the second Vista trial is now underway and those people involved in it are having difficulty finding a jury people who have not made up their minds one of our stories what eleven [Applause] each camp will lead off for the Yankees the three go to the second we talked about the Yankee shuffling on the coaching staff and before the game I talked to manager Yogi Berra what about the move that went on yesterday now with your staff with Sammy Ellis being sent down to the minors is the roving instructor were you in sync with that move where you consulted on that move by Steinbrenner well we were all consulted I didn't like the move but that's the way they want to fund office one thing would be a bigger help for us down in the minor leagues we'll get some volume pitches so you were opposed to the move and what about in terms of as you look at it the overview of that move is it something that will help this team do you feel well we don't know I sure don't like to change coaches in the extreme I like to keep the guys you know they're familiar with everything around that pretty much sums it up yogi was not happy with it even though he was consulted about it and his girl put it if you can't have the men working with you whom you desire makes it rather difficult yes but if you think you got a good man and he can come back and help some of your younger pitchers it might prove beneficial Texas leading early over the Angels who are the only team in the West over 500 years tap and takes a strike tip started out a month assume very hot st. Louis Montreal rained out and nationally the camp is over his last 14 trying to go on tracked again and takes low and inside one ball one strike I see Tim started his career with the Tigers and they went to the White Sox then to the Yankees sooo in one account Kemp's first year in a big league Phoenix long enough it's like that one of the things that has been a big part of the success is laying off the pictures right there he learned fast and he became an on-base percentage man and really helped the Gulf of his way [Music] the left of the count two balls and two strikes he'll be followed by Smalley and Griffey 34 year old milk Wilcox he would be the number three starter on this staff with Morris and p3 1 & 2 and you've got wand Berenguer who has been inconsistent but he'll give you a great game once in a while case in point Saturday when he shutout Milwaukee his Rose was also been well giving him the five inning to Sparky Anderson once well as we said with really a Lopez and Willie Hernandez the Doug Bair they can get five or six innings out of their starters and be satisfied [Applause] right first icon for Milt Wilcox one away in the second inning we talked about Wilcox struggling with his control here's a good fastball right on the corner camp can't quite get to it Kemp wasn't looking for that pitch eating what Jenner Roy Smalley is the batter 529 lifetime against bill Wilcox thumbs up hitting 260 want to know the cow Dave Winfield second league and hitting coming and grounded out in the first inning one that's the fish you want to throw this fellow he sits on a fastball each and every pitch you think you've got him set up to throw one possibly high and tight or fastball low and away he's always ready for it he has a little trouble with that breaking Vanden in on him and he hits a foul one ball two strikes [Applause] on deck is Kim Griffey who is not particularly enamored hitting out of the 8 spot slowly down in front to down [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and here you're going to see a pitch that Roger Craig the pitching coach who the Freud is at a lot of his pitchers throw the split finger fastball Botox throws it to about maybe thirty percent of the time to left-handed hitters and there you saw the ball just dipping and going away from the left-handed hitter a very effective pitch and grippy without a home run this season batting 263 - the gun is on 158 304 lifetime it is so rarely will you see somebody with those figures he's been around for a decade at number eight grounded back through the middle meant to bei said hit number three for the Yankees as Griffey gets aboard here in the second inning and with 10 and first base two down we'll take a look at Bobby Meacham the number nine hitter shortstop has been a disaster area for the Yankees this season Meacham was up early the season made an error in a game in April against Texas and was then sent for the minors they've had Tim Foley there they've had andre Robertson try to come back from that horrific auto accident playing shortstop and he's been sent back in the minors they resigned Bucky thin and employing at Columbus and now they've recalled Nietzsche by the way on one I feel the future lives in either discolor Andre Robertson I think they're going to have to put either one of the two of Maca for a half the season some 6070 ballgames and see what they can do is let him get settled out there it's been a big problem farm all year v2 is a switch hitter and the OP fields change in the other way and parish banking is it nicely saving the advancement by Griffey there's the defensive alignment shading them toward left one of the tougher plays in baseball breaking ball that bounces way on front just good reflexes you don't really have a chance to get in front of that in block if you don't know which way the ball is going to go with the spin agility there was good picture he went after with his love in one position and switched it while the ball was on the way and made a heck of a stock keep a runner out of scoring position Lance Parrish don't let the day what he can do defensively good illustration right there and everybody knows about his arm and a homerun record for catchers in the American League yeah 32 broke probes yogi Berra's roughly 230 Sparky also had a chance to rest them now and then as he did yesterday that keeps them in the lineup was the designated hitter the nice advantage of having a 16 lead at this point in the season Earl to found a regular now and then give a chance maybe to d8 as was the case to try to keep fresh yes it is it's a smart move even if you don't have a sick game way to keep me strong as possible being out in front does afford you a nice little luxury right here in the Kathryn [Applause] [Music] [Applause] here again we see a 2-1 fastball right on the corner a lot different fits that he made to Don Madelene first inning that caused the one run with a double up the gap in the air to left field and earned it perfectly consistent role of a second hit man left and there's one at a hassle one one side of the Troy this is today Chevrolet with the year-round versatility of the total suspension system a new dimension of total support and comfort so I say healthy investment in yourself then let's talk about your future via Serta Perfect Sleeper sleeper Darrell Evans will lead off with the Tigers as they hit in the second inning and I spoke with Darrell before the game [Applause] Darrell when you step into the box against Negro what's your approach what are you thinking about I'm trying not to laugh our good friends and I got to keep from doing that but just trying to stay back I think the way to hit a knuckleball the way I've had some success consumers trying to stay back as long as I can and hope that when I'm swinging at the pitch it's not thinking it's sharp it's great he's when he's on his pits can move 2 or 3 different ways at times and hopefully he doesn't have a great one and it's pretty consistent and most the time it comes into left-handers Evans's theory on hitting against Negro something he's done for years filled with the Braves Darrell with the Giants and then before that Darrell with the Braves for several years so they were teammates for quite a few seasons as Evans takes a strike on one thanks one Tigers one in the bottom of the second inning Evans lemon and herndon against Negro right through an interesting philosophy the crooks Robinson when he went up against enough footballer will say well the wood was just the opposite there's that knuckleball again does all kinds of funny things that Robinson wanted to go out and hit it before it got to the plate he said hit it just like a fastball go out and get it [Music] one and two on evidences in a slump Daryl hitting 143 in his last 20 games but still draws a lot of walks leaves the club with 35 takes outside Timothy Tim lemon on deck they're 11 said last week felt the big difference in the American League in the National he was the strike zone just a little bit bigger over here and the strike zone was a little too big there for Evans is liking as he issues a protest to John Hirschbeck you judge here and he thinks is outside of course he was complaining on the second strike so he didn't think it was the strike and I didn't think either what's this look oh my goodness oh my goodness well we said the strike zone's a little bit bigger over here guess that's a pretty good example that's three strikeouts for Negro the batter is Chet lemon [Applause] inside one a notes in lemon in the latest tabulation for the all-star game leading the leading vote-getter amongst the ocular the top three outfielders will be going in one in one Reggie Jackson and Dave Winfield [Applause] would be in the outfield with him if the balloting were tame tonight do it alone account Reggie's not even an outdoor [Music] you know the fans of course off times go on past performance you looking try to rule leading any Murray's and having the all-time here for horrible trying to destroy gathered in by Meacham and dug out by Mattingly so you have to down here in the second Lance Parrish is leading as you look at the play again hollow ball was hit hard nature did everything right got over in front of the ball setting himself showed a real good arm on this road that threw it into the dirt Mattingly come up and Mattingly is considered to have one of the real good blokes the first base in the American League showed it on that play the batter is Larry Herndon one of those mentioned Lance Parrish to the lady volcano monkey catchers Ross Perot at first Lou Whitaker is the leader at second rifting the leader at Fort George credit facility it's earned and pops undefeated champ edwin rosario live plus a special Olympic track and field report on ABC's Wide World of Sports Saturday great shot cooling off on a warm night in Detroit he's adorable part of a big crowd at Tiger Stadium where they love their Tigers she had an ice cream in her hand but she wasn't going to take a bite while the camera with no way and on the check for t dot set was named after his wayside wasn't he Randolph mm away in the cat on one one thing that's really irritating when you're pitching is when you have a guy like Willie Randolph with an excellent leadoff and coming up leading off the inning I know guys like Earl who managed for years and were successful at it are able to get guys like Willie leading off innings but you get an on-base forty percent of the time as the pitcher it makes your job of just a little bit more difficult whose hi who's been hot bond Benitez of California had a great week being in Peru right there Randolph at 500 over the 7-day period and Mattingly the Yankees Linda getting the most out of the series in particular in Fenway and rainbow fisted right back to the mound and we'll talk with the Bourbon far away here in the third inning with the score tied 1-1 it tuned in late Yankee scored in the first on Randolph single and Mattingly's double Kirk Gibson hit a home run off Negro in the bottom of the first inning here's winegar 15 emitting streak lying to Center in the first inning at the blowhard look switch-hitter one of three switch hitters in the Yankee lineup tonight Smalley and Meacham by the others I for vol.1 ago last inning and so far this I mean Wilcox control is almost excellent he's putting a breaking ball right where he wants to team's been spotting the fastball either up that the letters are down at the knees back out of play one and one Tiger Stadium they said about thirty to thirty-five thousand a night might have more than that as we look around committee empty seats Yankees in town for the first time this season - Thank You City party as we always generate enthusiasm that's a pretty shot great angle the way it looks if you're in the upper deck I guess back occurred around Tiger Stadium to the right of Whitaker and he Jensen for the animals we're hitting and Don Mattingly will be the batter little big week in sports on ABC primetime coverage Thursday the US Olympic track and field crowds as you know underway at the Los Angeles Coliseum are Luis among those qualifying yesterday Thursday night at 8:00 Eastern Time we'll have coverage for you also next Sunday night from the Coliseum in Los Angeles as well and Saturday afternoon one ball no strikes the count automatically who doubled in the New York run in the first inning Wilcox got in trouble fishing and Mattingly by getting behind him 2 & 1 having to come in with a fastball again he's behind him again I want to know [Music] first time I watched his belly was a good breaking ball hitter he's a good fastball hitter again the thing that surprises me is the power that conflict well he's hit 8 of those 10 home runs in Yankee Stadium you can pull the ball and you're smart enough to look for the pit but you can handle and pull and to make a pretty good hitter to hit in that ballpark don't get the appeal there from Terry knew Decker is exactly swing another look to him on the couch [Applause] [Music] [Applause] I believe he held up [Applause] now 2 and 2 on Mattingly there's not only hitting well but making contact very consistently he struck out only 11 times this season 61 games [Applause] he's no slouch with that glove as you saw on the bottom of the second inning let's hit you fought off there [Applause] [Music] tsuzuku on Mattingly who came up through the Yankee system seems to almost be a rarity to be a Yankee him to come up through their minor-league system olia they produced a lot of ball players but what they've done is taken those young ball players traded them to another organization for an established welfare to try to win a pennant on any one particular year the year that they might be in that race held by ferry so he strikes out for only this full time to seize it and Wilcox has three strikeouts as we go out another look at parish hanging on to the foul tip it's one one in the middle of the third Spartans next big league pitcher loves served fire brewed strokes see what I mean that was his fastball that was the curve wild pitch then release pitcher stones and scroll like fire brewed for smoother taste now you can give Olympic gold and silver because the first time the US Treasury is good in a package this crude the first thing that's a pretty sign unless you have to fly through it cumulus cloud little filled up there but basically clear skies and some rain early on but the field in excellent shape good drainage here and we're one-one as we go to the bottom of the third inning Dave Berggren to lead things off has one home run this season and he said it two weeks ago tonight in the 10th inning to beat the run all on a spectacular at-bat after he fouled off seven pitches on the 13th six into the upper deck in Linton and everybody went home happy it is a dramatic moment Wow all over the place ball one strike I think he's a lowball hitter but I guess with the knuckleball it doesn't make any difference whether you throw that not the ball high and low strike zone or low in the strike zone whether it goes up whether it goes down we talk about Monday night about there's no bigger PR agent in baseball in Sparky Anderson he's fallen in love with Dave Bergman he loves his glove because he's an excellent defensive first baseman sitting almost 300 not a whole lot of power as you said the only home run he hit his two weeks ago but he sprays the ball around get some butch our RBIs and does everything you can to have a great attitude and a winning grounded slowly third second and Randolph throws Bertha now with first down here in the bottom of the third inning wedding and barbaro garbey is the batter Barbie's a felon who has been moved around by Anderson his best position is probably first base for the Tigers already have Birdman and evidence he claims circle and he can also play the osteo than one thing you know he can hit [Applause] silencing should work his way into the lineup regularly would hit a lot of home runs in this ballpark [Applause] even third tonight the Tigers have been going with Howard Johnson a third ablaze his 40th birthday a busy busy a good breaking ball hitter I think he also felt that Howard Johnson we might have trouble with you throws knuckleball and is it that barbae hit the breaking ball if Negro throws that upper bar soon the waves groaning again by the way occasionally you'll see our centerfield camera that shot will begin to bounce but the vibration of everybody's standing and sitting as the wave really threw the kids before this was a to know it's a fast time the Renaissance Aragon there's delays again that was out of three in one three suture so inside throw three straight fastball I would assume that to mean that he does not think barbay with the wind blowing strongly to right field of hitting home run he doesn't want to baseball two of those fast although one of them is right on the outside planner the other one down the third field advice Kali [Applause] [Music] Whittaker two games in the USFL one taking place right up the road Michigan trying to clinch a playoff spot they are the defending champs 14-7 Oklahoma no in the second quarter in San Antonio lead Houston by Santa the second period Whitaker outside one ball no strikes [Music] to a no on Whitaker he's coming up to 30 [Applause] [Music] whistles secular Olympics in the demons der area [Music] grando the gap [Applause] last two hitters were the only two hitters that Nico's been behind hasn't walked a man yet and he has struck out three three one Whitakers not a very big guy but he has to throw him another fastball and he gets it up and out over the plate this wind blowing out at the kind of all that he has been known to turn on at at the moment last night the Whitaker was thinking home run on the 3 1 pitch idiotic but he had a good test winds blowin strong out the right-field now was surprised at Whitaker didn't offer after that 3 and ok Whitaker hit 15 homers 2 years ago [Applause] 29 serrano turned out to be the winning run make them subject us out here take a walk if you give it to him and he can homer to make a basket Negro issues his first walk Tigers are the man aboard with two down and up comes Alan Trammell and even know what occur only has three stolen bases this year's base feeling situation is far key why he doesn't run more and he says the guy shows me he can steal I'll send him if not let him stay over in person let the next guy hit a double or home run kind of your philosophy Earl that's a good philosophy travel lebanner with Whitaker at first base I always wondered why you never sent booth Palomar [Music] what ago Negro and winegar as you can see it's not bad when you think about it being is normally the first thing that comes to mind knuckleball picture easy to run at cetera well it isn't when you cheat he stops and hands in a couple different places he'll sometimes stop up sometimes of movement it just makes it very difficult for a runner to get a running lead and that's primarily what the good base runners want to get I think basically if you were going to run you were going to would be in a situation we would hope the whiner who would not be able to handle the pit he'd want to run on a knuckleball why [ __ ] got the oversize glove one and believe me it's tough to get that little baseball out of that big brother never [Applause] two-in-one cacao [Applause] my [ __ ] done a very good job is here catching Negro there's a good picture of the oversized bow [Applause] [Music] - ball misses outside to do and get three in one three balls and one strike now is grandma looks down at Granite Whitaker also check for the time [Applause] last edge was a fastball and the speed time that at 77 miles an hour broken back router down to third volley up with it and close travel out so Alan's slump continues he's now 1 for his last 25 and we played three in Detroit where it's the Yankees one the Tigers one this is today's Chevrolet Chevrolet complete classic one of the world's great automotive engine and for thirteen years in a row the full-size Chevrolet has been a best-selling car of its kind it's easy to see why compare completely keep pushing coming it's yeah got this granddaddy of a fish oh my god I'm in a book he says I'll give you three wishes if you throw me back a talking fish well it was hot I was thirsty so I wished for a nice cold Stroh's beer Goodwrench to keep right GMP with genuine G ever Boris booth now Michaels with Earl Weaver and Jim Palmer as Tiger Stadium in Detroit the Yankees for the Tigers tied 1-1 and the middle of the order coming up for the Yankee Don Baylor it leads off in the fourth inning it will see they would field and Steve Jeff Bader grounds it out of the birthday it wilcox working for the Tigers as Baylor grounded foul outside third one comes to me like Baylor's didn't on that breaking ball really looks like he came out to the part tonight they hit a curveball out too far [Applause] one ball one strike the count on Don Baylor [Applause] understand some of you are experiencing some temporary but we hope our temporary audio problems and Robbie's been working to rectify there you found a good height you had a scattering port you would say how are you going to pitch the Don Baylor and stay going throw many low fat balls try to get the ball up and cut him in a rather insightful statement when he playing up in Seattle Kingdome he said every time I come to a home plate I feel like I'm in scoring position up here such a great part to hit it really feel that hitters come to play here in Tiger Stadium it has it's a feeling you don't hit the center field at the wonderful Park to hit it two balls two strikes the count on Don Baylor [Applause] checks feel no held up great super space of steeple loli had so much success here because the control was so good that had kept the ball away from those left-handed hitters and right-handed hitters and when you did get wood it was always to turn fear Baelor takes outside Logano to strike three [Music] the walk we're going to be possibly floating strikes on a pretty good pitch [Music] strike on him it's right on him we call the emotion low caste a place so we know he wanted it type of [ __ ] that can get a manager flown out to call him there's too many of them during the course of the night how would you know what he knew how to get thrown out if you a minute who was bitching how many times row what you wind up with 89 I know I never got thrown out of one the timer was fifty because I knew I'd have to stay in and go get it in the seventh grade whole other guy on Dave Winfield 89 games from which Weaver was ejected think about that that's more than an anesthesia yeah but it's only six a year and it's less than one a month FFP Nashville area [Applause] [Music] [Applause] get him then place on a hot look like away and if something else Beeler couldn't move but Baylor had us down with second well there is something that possibly could happen here that only you and a dugout know the Paul woods hit right on the 5th Winfield had a strong swing but didn't hit the ball hard it hung up in the air and it looks to me like Gibson has trouble with the light he had to pull all the way slow down then just tried to keep it from going by it ball should have been caught the only way we'll ever know if the lights did bother you find out tomorrow so Lalor stop ii would feel the first here step are you going to butter him I mean you have a guy that's nine and three with a 177 GRA yeah I'm going to bunt for a base dead here but this guy doesn't run very you're still accomplishing sacrifice if he doesn't go he's not budding at least on the first regiment so a lot you know he was on all those powerful teams no balls one strike on Kent Yankees one Tigers one fourth inning the Yankees threatening with two on nobody out you know they've got a guy pitching farmer Negro is only given up one point seven seven runs the ball game two runs at this stage of the game is look mighty good to me and I don't ordinarily say that today and if I leave it in this ballpark yeah even this ball for your bellows I would see strikes to set a sacrifice situation that's going on I think you have to understand how that it's a lot easier to sit up here in a group and say you at once to be a manager than actually do it yeah he says he would have fun it but what Steve Kemp he would have thought about all the years where Kemp drove in all those big runs and hit the 20 home runs and he would add him swinging away and all those years he to hit do a few double play [Applause] and it stays on too you know Howard still want to the button in the 7900 I know it and I know Howard's watching and that's why I said I oh it's probably not watching he's probably judging the bita we've been fair to that I think it's that time of year [Music] [Music] Oh to [ __ ] it was high at the strike zone Wilcox wanted it a little damn depth until Wilcox does second time Champa struck out so one down two lon Smalley coming up in this ABC Sports exclusive is being brought to you by Stroh's and scroll light fire brewed for smooth taste while the offal one batting 250 a [Applause] want to go one run four hits for the Yanks one run one hit for the Tigers or run by Gibson to the first two balls no strikes Baylor second wind field is birds it was a position Wilcox didn't want to get himself into behind to and oh and you have to come to Smalley with a basketball as you pointed out before small he just waits on basketball every time is up there I am that man good what get Roy Smalley out as Earl said he is a good fastball hitter but he's a good fastball hitter in the middle of play you can get the ball way in or on the corner no low Cox's did you can occasionally be successful reaches out and hits it in the air to left field that's Herndon so Baylor still a second and Whitfield is still at first after campus struck out and slowly has flied out and the batter is Ken Griffey who singled in the second inning one for water not to say I told you so but that could have been a sacrifice fly and can't fund it and move the runners along [Applause] I think one reason he may not have fun it is that Negro even though he is pitched extremely well this year has only completed two out of 14 games your number one bullpen pitcher just went on the disabled list with an index finger injury yogi might be saying hey I got to get a lot of runs tonight that's food for thought a good point on one on grippy maybe we're not going to win 2 to 1 or 3 to 1 or if the Tigers are leading the American League in runs scored with over 5 a game so it is something to think about quickly ahead on Griffin is Wilcox no balls and two strikes [Applause] [Applause] well khakhra putting everything he's got in every 15 Rippey his face Wilcox just a limited amount of times but for for five against them [Music] [Applause] one ball two strikes [Music] area saw Ken griffeys ability why he's a 300 hitter lifetime Wilcox made a great pitch blowing away rip he fouled it off [Music] would be much tougher out on Asperger he has that ability hit the ball with topspin [Applause] all right they're out when he claimed most of his career on a scooter for Cincinnati again Wilcox trying to go away the ball is off the corner got to give Griffey some credit for not swinging it again you're at a very emotional time Wilcox does not pitched poorly of based on ball in a jam hit he wants to get out of this inning and instead now he's bringing it too which means the runners are going on this pitch Baylor takes off from second and Winfield will be moving from first and I'm guessing breaking ball after those three pitches well last time I threw ken griffey a break and volley hit at the third deck in Yankee Stadium I would stay with the fastball away and [Music] Emmit all the down on his groupie and allows the money but lemon gets a great jump per usual and that's that for the eggs to get the first two men aboard here in the fourth inning and come up empty if you're watching the news Palma was right the ball was on the outside half the plate lemon again we got a good jump possible and that's the end of the inning we'll be right back I'm the coachmen Dalmatian my name is Pete and millions of miles have had beneath my feet I've led a mighty army run to put the head off gym baton then I got us behind in Louie aparicio won the game for me with a three-run home run get a big head start on eco aged wine but here is at the age of 45 oldest player in the big leagues his brothers still a most effective pitcher for Houston he Ola Ryan the aces of the Astro stat well appoint Wilhelm answers my phone calls I'm planning on making a comeback [Applause] big cities fifties as I recall was that long break whoa it's funny I had Earl come out on a number of occasions and asked me if I've ever considered trying to throw a knuckleball when I was getting pounded around of course that I never could do that and what you try [Applause] three tuna Gibson who negro [Music] [Applause] [Music] full signal center here in the fourth inning and it will bring up Lance Barrett this Saturday on ABC's Wide World of Sports San Juan Puerto Rico is the site Edwin Rosario tough man to be please come back from a couple of handed grease the pages title again power Davis the 1976 Olympian on the subject of the Olympics do you look at crowd in LA we'll have a report for you on wine world this Saturday afternoon parents brought down to the first Negro has three strikeouts one among the milestones that Negro is bearing down on the 3,000 strikeout mark he needs 15 and he'll become the ninth pitcher in Major League history to reach 3,000 [Music] that's quite a milestone just the fact over 4700 in it is just phenomenal think of all of the guy who come up and looks so good early in their careers and then really on problems and the other things that happen even though they are decent pitchers its longevity factor the endurance is simply amazing well it's incredible that they will give up on them in Atlanta fits very well from June on lasted brother is going pick a fine throw from Paris is a strike to get it [Applause] winegar is it Paris because there was a parish site throw with barriers of the blade well it was a knuckleball but it was high where perished at handle but there's another perfect throw right on the money we get to see it again from high above get some not too good a break the real fast running but the throws they're waiting for so that's the first out of the inning and the count is now two and one is parish get under it foul off to the left that's Olly killed over with winegar but it's back in about four rows so they cannot do this is the time when a manager really wants to kick himself in the rear end for putting that steel on [Applause] the type of gamble that Sparky figured would be a good one to take if some leading the club in steals 13:15 attempts [Music] - - pension is chopped foul outside third Yankees would run at the top of the first and then Detroit standard on Gibson's Homer but all the scoring one one one out nobody on last of the fourth high in the air to left field toward the line as Tim comes in and makes the catch in fair territory so the zoo down to the fourth the name let's take a look at our lemons [Applause] Tigers are leading the league in hitting pitching has been standing defense leading a league in that requirement as you look at Evans wearing the protector to guard against foul walls oh and one account I imagine if there's any tips you follow up your anchor off your foot it's enough Darrel's no dummy struck out on two questionable fish instead he was going to try to stay back and wait came up this time and swinging launching in the air to left field and kerlick toward the line going to be a subclass get a plane by vg1 a net result dining port that would have been guaranteed to lead off this week in baseball he made it outstanding effort he could eat one ovary a long way for the ball and from sitting in a booth it didn't look like he was going to closer even here it doesn't look like it completely outstretched and the ball just hit on the heel of the glove instead of the pocket right he got there he was right there this ball up from Columbus Bobby Meacham well Meechum n' and ray robertson both have the abilities to become an outstanding sharks captain and if they can get enough getting around them they'll be fed up that position for a few years and it takes outside one ball two strikes are Derek it's just hard to fathom that bringing short stuff up the beginning to season he make one error in always the meaningful error in the minor leagues the next day not exactly a confidence booster if you're a young player while an Barry Robertson was their regular shortstop last year they claim that that move had been in the making for some two or three days being involved in things like that myself I could see where that would be true bulk out on Evan Robertson recuperating from the bad automobile accident yet with Florida spent a little time in the minor wake her party was ready well at least they claimed the air had nothing to do sounds F and Evans just does stay alive as moniker cam : three and two gang is 19 back coming in as the Tigers get off to the blistering start 35 and 5 just about everybody out of their Toronto was hanging right doing six-pack finish my moniker holds on the strikeout the temple for or father time as we go to the fifth at the Yankees won and the Tigers won this is today's Chevrolet taking chart with Cavaliers the hottest selections today Cavalier more horsepower than the three BD reports for Olympic Trials continued with explosive track and field competition these gold metal hopefuls Carl Lewis and the amazing Edwin Moses plus many more Thursday night on ABC let the trials coming your way this week should be a fascinating week in Los Angeles I'll be heading on out there after the game tonight and we'll have three days of coverage for your Thursday Saturday and Sunday as our Olympic track and field team is select Anke as you can see have done so much juggling and shuffling the stage and everybody has to check the line apart everyday to find out if they're in if so where they're playing another combination tonight [Music] as we go to the dissing it the leadoff batter Bobby Meacham takes a look at a strike Bobby needs a fly down to the second I was called up from Olympus finally the Yankees have brought clay Christensen back when they activated the picture Mike Armstrong the other day they sent Christensen out but then when Righetti got hurt yesterday they had to put Dave on a disabled list they brought Christensen back so a very short wide stay in the minors to play this is ridiculous [Applause] the low [ __ ] had a total of five strikeouts and Willie Randolph is the manager I was always under the impression that if you sent a player to the minor lake that he had to spend ten days down there before it could be at least 10 days before could be recalled now whether they got special permission from the American League President or not I really don't know they did you're exactly right that is exactly the case the one Righetti got hurt they appealed and they were granted it with Christianson able to join the team at least according to with yogi birth only before the game Randall one for two in the air to deep left centerfield urn dingoes racing back and that was off the fence earned in plays like High Line player but settles for getting it back in by travel Grandal thought for a moment about extending at the third stops at second with a double Willie Randolph with his second hit and he is red-hot i above we get a good look paul said well of his two bases all the way you can see from this angle how hard it was it hit the wall on a fly pretty good play by her to cut off the wall pretty hard it would have got by him there was a chance for three so now winegar with a 15 game hitting streak open to tonight flying to Center grounded a second actually more like flying to Center he's at bull hard in the first eliminated [Applause] hate to be redundant but Milt Wilcox is not overpowering when he makes good pitches with his basketball he gets away with him when he gets behind Willie Randolph throws the ball in the middle the blade they hit the ball hard here you see another good breaking ball when he when he has all three of the stitches working for a fastball which he could spot in and in a way and also he can throw that split finger fastball and drop that curveball he can be very effective but when he gets behind I think that's one of the reasons he's been hit hard over the last five years we're not making good pitches there's one thing we know Willie Randolph can get the high fastball one year against the Oreos he had 21 hits nineteen are continuing on how fast fast balls above the belt but Wilcock has been making exceptional pitches in fifth spot one ball two strikes with R and all but second one out 5th inning at Tiger Stadium Kane tied 1-1 in the air to shallow right center field lemon racing in has to play it on a hop Randolph had to hold so he stops to third and there are runners at first and third little looping single is Benefield and that's a 16 game hitting streak now were butch winegar and the Aggies threat begin they had two on nobody out of the fourth and Wilcox was equal to the task but now he has to go through the heart of the order with one out of two on and Mattingly at the plate doubled and struck out it makes a big difference down when you have a couple of guys on and you have to face the seventh 89 debtors versus coming into the heart of the order well as you know in this situation I'd like my picture just to go after that hitter if you have to give up one run or if you get out of this inning with one running in a pretty good shape league's leading hitter at the plate and the Tiger infield is looking for the DoublePlay they won't get it as it's thrilled through deep right center field lemon goes back to the warning track and the Yankees take the lead as Randolph scores and winegar it's back to third but that one stayed in and those in over 400 feet [Applause] we get to see it again from the above and you're right that's all was just four hundred four hundred feet it's right it's the four hundred and fifteen yard mark a 415 foot mark when it comes down that's if I fly but it does take some of the pressure off the Milt Wilcox he gave up that one run nice that's two outs and a man on first base [Music] 2 to 1 Yankees Mattingly is driven in both runs tonight Saylor is the batter whacks it foul over the roof out into the street what dangley did was have an up confidence look for a pitch that he gritted hit a sacrifice fly with he got a fastball up in the strike zone hit it well got that run in one a luxuries of hitting with less than two outs and runners in first and third or just the runner on third base [Music] only the one on Baylor [Music] one ball one strike now that reminds me of the story you told him I had that cook house meeting in Milwaukee where he he said you never left the man on third with less than two out and I think somebody said yes because they always been [ __ ] for you that's half right what's the other half they didn't say that out loud and I want to tell you that that's the first time I heard this that fella would have been playing in Rochester now that's one thing girl you never held a grudge what if I told you they thought it was Brooks Robinson so that's fine I have been managing and I just [Applause] one two [ __ ] going to Don Baylor [Applause] Oh [Music] [Music] [Music] nobody does chicken like we do with a kernel secret blend of herbs and spices it's finger lickin good you are looking at the most our condolences to the family of former catcher Jim Heejun longtime major leaguer and a host who has a lot of friends been with these two ball clubs in particular son Mike former player broadcaster now with the Milwaukee Brewers Jim Heaton passing away yesterday at the age of 63 [Music] great cat [Music] Chet lemon in the bottom of the fifth inning takes out the one update the USFL action for you enhanced on Oklahoma Michigan side at 14 in San Antonio leading Houston by 13 at the half [Applause] Rico starting to fall behind a few headers now and behind here three balls and no strikes on lemon Sun usually started off Chet lemon with a slider instead of the knuckleball he's been throwing more fastballs and sliders with the Yankees they didn't want him to throw it in Atlanta last year right here before Jackie's games a much better parking that gets the bottom part of the strike zone again might be a little bit low but I would think if you wanted to classify the kind of strike zone that John hurt last night it would be a pitcher's strike zone hitters don't like it they don't know what he's calling balls and what he's calling strikes is the difficult strike going to hit up enough fires don't like it when I hit her drops at bat starts running down the first base now moving that strike zone becomes a little bit bigger on the next pitches we thought well not always but for cyanide kind of say that Chet lemon isn't a very enthusiastic here's a similar going down to first day [Applause] again we see a fastball just thinks might be a strike in the national league but we're here in Detroit in the American League the lemon is on that's the second walk given up by Negro and Herndon is the batter fouled out in the second [Music] garden has seen a lot of Negro he was Larry he spent a lot of time with the San Francisco Giants all Negro is pitching in Atlanta on one that was pretty good batting average against it so exact Alex Gramma's third-base coach former brewer manager I'm sure Sparky knows those two that's different to my doctor Sparky we're talking Larry Herndon who had 20 home runs ninety two RBIs last year we wonder how well the Tigers are going to play when he gets hot bark he said here's the guy that he's really capable of having an excellent year I got to get him on track six game League let's see what he can do just a quick move to first days for what - what Phil Niekro does out of that move it just doesn't stop his hand sometimes it goes right to home plate a very tough motion to get a quick jump from first based on what it is it's really cheap something is close to come to a warning second cause well he paused there but most the time as you said he doesn't do that and I'm fired let you get away with a few things out there they didn't pause for a full second watch him again here see less than one full second an adult will grill to Tennessee at the line that hippie makes the cake about 390 from the day run away very much Stella I'm going to take a looking regular speed and how long Negro comes set we'll see if we can count to 1,000 down here 1000 no you can not a half a second I think it's a half a second are you sure about that rule I just thought you had a pause the outliers say how can you not come to a stop if you deliver to home plate well you don't come to a stop in a wind-up and that was almost aligned up to me there's Berggren digging outside one ball no strikes on Dave Billy eliminates the chance for a run at a time of pitcher as he has no chance that's completely labor you don't have to come to a stop to go to first base where she had to go Phil Niekro a lot of credit because historically it's very easy to run off of knuckleball [ __ ] because of the speed of the knuckleball finesse and difficulty I think at the receiving end of a glove and it be showed you before this combination has not been particularly easy to feel again and at one time they've tried tonight they got a Gibson or thinning then appeal again [Applause] about 385 so urgent and German combined and the throw comes in Clement in fact the first days burned and Bergman both hit a deep and hit him presenter or there abouts and that's deadly in this part to doubt well lemon sauce is tagging and going there but grippy showed a pretty good arm when it go into second base and that has a fairly known for a good barbaro garbey grounds it out in the third inning [Music] number nine hitter for the Tigers Oh after first right I think women in a situation would have go to get the jump if you get the jump off the Negro will go if you can't seem to figure them out or for closer [Applause] trying to hit one out with carbon and the cat on the two [Music] barbaro garbey from cuba came over and the Freedom Flotilla 1980 [Applause] good-looking hitter wonder why the Tigers have this record baseball they've added Garbi they've added Dave Bergman add a grouper Jones added Willie Hernandez we've done a great job warm in the bullpen they're 11 and they 192 games last year I think probably the most insightful thing that Sparky said as I look at our record last year we walked 27 games that we had leads going into the seventh or eighth inning they're good if I could hope our bullpen we'd win more games and they certainly have Hernandez trade was a big one and they got Bergman in that same deal to they gave up Len Wilson and gone wocket bus and there are two pretty good players I was very impressed with Len Wilson has done a nice job over in Philadelphia John welcome welcome of course a great guided cocoon against left-handed pitching the whole nation is here to plug it up and over to Randolph through a tire decide the end of five it's still 2 to 1 Yankees and we'll be back at Tiger Stadium with war after this word from your local station she says she's unpredictable she's Delia she's back on Ryan's Hope a questionable move by the Pistons today the day before the NBA Draft as they get a player crime looking on in Detroit Yankees on top to the one taking the lead with a run in the top of the fifth inning we welcome those of you have been watching the game between Texas and California and Anaheim that's the story here the totals through five Yankees on top 2 to 1 Yankees scoring in the 1st inning on a single by Randolph and a double by Mattingly Kirk Gibson hit a home run for the Tigers to tie the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning and then the Yankees took the lead to the fifth when Randolph doubled booth to third on a single by butch winegar who now has a 16 game hitting streak and really scored on a sacrifice fly by Mattingly the league's leading hitter so Mattingly has driven in both the Yankee runs the Tigers come in leading Toronto by 6 leading Baltimore by 11 and a half leading the Yankees by 19 as we go to a six inning Dave Winfield one for two tonight to be followed by Steve Kemp and Roy Smalley now Michaels with Earl Weaver Jim Palmer on a warm night in tiger town home plate umpire John Hirschbeck Consulting for the moment with Wilcox we're missing chat London Lemmon in centerfield I think that's the reason for the delay lemon was aboard the vacant area aid center right now where lemon would normally be patrolling and here he comes with no injuries Evan had been on base in the bottom of the fifth inning and was out at second on the force flight stand the bottom of the fifth [Applause] son Dave Winfield's through the Lee things off and the sixth inning who's been very hot Winfield came in second in the league as the Yankees have the two top hitters matically one and Winfield - with his average up two points to 338 don't Wilcox his numbers through five six strikeouts Stephen - milk and he has struck out camp twice after Donna Limpy so here we go to top of the sixth inning breaking pitch missing outside ball one well Dave Winfield two ball player that can do it all he can run he can throw from the outfield he can run down a fly ball he hits their average and he can hit that three-run homer wildlife right side like that one away Ranger viewers back to Don Drysdale one away here the sixth inning and the camp the batter struck out twice [Music] that's really something else you would not see him do very regularly three or four seasons ago tough man to strikeout very aggressive a pretty good contact hitter tonight he's has thrown the fastball kind of right by him made good pitches with it but the first time up he drew him a belt high fastball and just didn't get to it then he made a good pitch with his fastball low and away but he was ahead in the count now he's dropped behind on ball no strikes it's really odd it did you say in the basket isn't strikeout or hazard struck out there like any paint some pictures flames and it's not that obviously that sounded popping loft as I said very aggressive of course we struct below the eye last year in Milwaukee towards I guess the beginning of September that he's not does not see the ball as well as he used to leave all those banks again it's something you really never know what it's like to contend with the sake assembly Yankee players and they were talking about toga arrow who came over from Cleveland having a tough time dealing with the pressure playing in New York and you just wonder if that didn't get to Steve Kemp the big contract the fact that they expected him to come along and do all the things he did in either Chicago or here in Detroit there is at first base now with one out and Smalley is the batter you're right the pressure in New York is different under the circumstances not only the media attention but because of the management of the ballclub George Steinbrenner is as well-known owner as any professional sports he has been I guess all things considered relatively quiet this evening as opposed to years past but late some of the moves have started to be made in terms of in the last day the coaching maneuvers that's not the umpires out right here the coach even we get the feeling from talking to their players they really enjoy playing for yogi Barry puts their name down and look to play but all the united scenes things really distracted who was it a couple of the guys felt that when Steinbrenner came out and indicated as you look at Bearer that Billy Martin might be filling back room for some of the guys indicated to fit in one Martin back and maybe that spirit Amon Don Baylor said it specifically some of us who went out of here he comes back and I got the pretty meaningful statement because Don Baylor along with Winfield are the kind of guys that to build a team around and look forward towards to lead the ballclub well the way I understand food to statement that Donnie didn't say that some of us the one at least had some players hang on himself area city me lady included himself on that group of us well you probably ride again as the 1 2 pitch exiled away Ang's had made the number of managerial moves Azurill mentioned early as he looked at the wave again rolling away Marcedes Thank You Beijing News and using one minute 1981 these labels can Bob lemon took over they live in the country lolly strikes out for the second time and at seven strikeouts now foci and again we saw the finger fastball that is really accounted for about for this seventh strikeout fastball it looks like our official looks like a fastball down the dawn and the bottom drops out a very difficult pitch to hit [Applause] thumbs up to home plate looking like a basketball and just falls away from the left-hand hitter into the right-handed hitters Griffey takes inside ball one what a dog how certain was playing off the bag at first faith American we can't look at him he's like he could get that base if he wanted it because I think something that could be vetted parent to George Steinbrenner the bottom line why the Yankees are making games on there's a lot of the players are not producing up their capability one of the distractions or whatever they have guys that he expected to play better and they're not doing it in the air to left field [Music] [Applause] no hits to the main left on we're at Tiger Stadium in the middle of the sixth inning where the Yankees leave Detroit good one when you buy a new car you want to keep it looking new and that's easy with armor all protected a scientific formula that took a polymer chemist ten years to develop it helps keep lover wine leather and plastic looking new so even though you can't keep your car from getting old you can keep it from looking old armor oh competition these old metal hopefuls Carl Lewis and the amazing Edwin Moses plus many more Thursday night on ABC all the other games going in the American League right at Texas with Frank Tanana working leading six nothing in the seventh inning every word as looking games Kansas City at Oakland Chicago in Seattle getting her the way shortly and the only game in the National League finals Montreal rained out a reminder following your late local news Nightline tonight a report on the world's first met two orphans that the subject was sent top immediately following your late local news [Applause] no vinegar he leads on from the bottom of the sixth inning taking low from Negro League on top good [Applause] [Music] time for the auto and Whitaker's Trammell and Gibson [Music] [Applause] I as what you can out of these the Yankees - Dave Righetti for at least the next two weeks going up a ballistic is the cut index finger who stayed in the bullpen yesterday against the water cooler [Applause] [Music] really wonder who he's going to go to yesterday in the ball game Dennis Rasmussen on them now 2 2 2 ballgame with Gary Roenicke up he had Jose Rijo in the bullpen who won in six on the year Sam Rowley from the left-hand side who's had a tired arm really since the middle of spring training so he doesn't have a whole lot of buttons to push out there and hope that he's going to get positive results in the corner to cut it off Lester takes the turn and Dave fires it back in blue literature [Music] well here's the fish ball kid hard right over the first baseman's have you show how valuable Winfield is we can see how far he is away from the ball right here looks like it might be a couple his feet got in there in time and the strong-arm stop Whitaker at first day we're going to film the rooftop again and again we get to see how far he is away from the ball he slips even and come up Tomatoes let's throw to second base Alan Trammell mired in a slump Oh for two tonight Thank You fried Travel 1 for his last 25 [Applause] that'll do some damage here average thank you sacrifice was ordinary trying to vote for the base [Applause] [Music] is volley up even with a bag the little door wanted to know because are you a bunt the first pitch what you do is bring the third baseman Roy Smalley and if it makes it easier if you're going to defenseless from your way to hit the ball by getcha travel really mired in it now and trying to shake twice tonight so that struck out five here is distance we talked about that knuckleball being right there yeah this also hard the John Hirschbeck the umpire to call he said that comes up the home plate looks like a kite all of a sudden the bottom falls out of it I would imagine really I think that second years of American league umpire he has not seen a whole lot of knuckleballers in the minor league they do have a they've been leading by 11 now [Music] 6/3 foot in the third - you [Applause] - one first on the Yankees a face the Tigers this demon tomorrow the Yankees going with Ron Guidry Tigers are going to go with Carl Willis who saw last Monday relief at piranha and because of the injury to Jack Morris [Applause] Marcius i'll Jefferson [Music] he said he wanted a few young pitchers that they've had Detroit if he's been here which is 1979 even though he's only really pitched one minor league season that comes up with an idea of how to pitch he says it's very refreshing he wish he could have more [Applause] the only problem that I could proceed for Carlos diseases to pitch [ __ ] [Applause] sinker slider might be good the first and second time around the order but the third time Sparky said I'm going right to the bullpen [Applause] bring it on out account on Gibson to parish on deck and they give the green light he is a lazy flyball to left field where temp makes the catch for the out so two away with Gibson flying out three at all a lot of people are going to wonder why he wanted that pitch but you are going to get a fastball on the three and all and maybe he took those two runs on the board that to deke ahead Gibson already had one home run in the game so that's Sparky's reasoning here anything over the years now that I think about it you may see more green light 3 an oath against Nikko then than almost anybody on I'm sure just for that reason I was surprised that Lou Whitaker getting three in one earlier in the ballgame I guess also from a manager standpoint as you did many years we had a guy and raise Mora is probably the best 300 hitter that I've ever seen and I played for almost 20 years but earl least had enough confidence in his ability to do that Valletta met and it was just amazing how successful he was pointed 3 know a lot of hitters don't like to do it I just don't feel comfortable swinging free [Applause] Lance Parrish the batter knuckleball is inside of the exact back row one Thanks two tigers walked two on six setting Whitaker at first on ball one strike mazie Maradona flashing solitude nice guy 45 years old involving water charity Jennifer foul one ball to strike was very sad day for him when he was released by Atlantic didn't know for a while what he would do he knew he wanted to fix he was released right after the season when the Yankees wound up making the decision decide of a January he wasn't on an all-star team that I took to Japan and I spent some time talking with him he has managerial aspects but a key step 1.77 earned run average it's going to be a long time before you have to think about death seeking his win tonight with the cyan with dan Petry back to Jack Morris high in the air D'Alessio but it will stay in coming back in now is canceled a South Side waste the leadoff single by Whitaker and will go to the seventh inning with the a game two of the Tigers this year one out of every six cars will need to have its brakes repaired that's why it - we offer a free brake inspection if your car needs work - no it's being done by experts five hundred thousand people here have their brakes fixed up - and we're glad to have the business but more important we appreciate the trust IBM for this you make the call with a runner on first base the picture starts from the stretch position and throws the ball but the umpire spots something wrong and calls time what did he see you make the call when IBM personal computer owners look for good software where can they turn to IBM for programs that help you keep up with modern times business programs entertainment productivity education and more the variety you want with the quality you expect in the growing library of IBM personal computer software a well-balanced selection destroy Uria because the picture never came to a complete stop in the stretch position before he threw the ball the umpire called a ball can stop play if you said balk and you made the right call from Detroit this ABC Sports exclusive is being brought to you by budweiser proud sponsor of the US Olympic team for all you do this Bud's for you next week the 25th of June next Monday night San Diego against Los Angeles definitely at least as some of you will see that and possibly a second game to be announced later this week but the Padres Dodgers will be a definite matchup for us next week from Dodger Stadium Monday night baseball at 8:00 Eastern 7:00 central Bobby Meacham to lead off for the Yankees as we go to the seventh inning Yankees on top 2 to 1 Meacham Randolph and winegar body is open to tonight milk milk I'm seven strikeouts along the way and he's owned one with Beecher [Applause] it seems pretty good-sized boy [Music] I think as you said before it's a classic example oh they don't really cure how much he hissed if he does a good job playing defensively at church them down the line and it is a fair ball bouncing into the corner where herndon backhand makes me a good speed stand-up double for it's good fits too here you see it looks like a split-finger fastball low and away as Earl said it's an excellent [ __ ] except he hits it right off the chalk line down the left-field line for a double fairly clear leadoff double handed medieval okok you've given up only two runs tonight just once as you retire the side in order that was the third inning [Music] we talked in his last five games he's not pitched well and four of them the one he did pitch well he got beat by Mike Flanagan two to one so as you said he's really doing his job a pitcher when he goes out there he wants to keep his ballclub in the game and he certainly done that four into the seventh inning trouble in New York two lifetime he's for intent against the Yankees they'll get busy to the bullpen Randolph at the plate around the bunt taking a strike on one Randolph didn't think so well will he's one of the best at work in an umpire throw that ball low and away though I think that ball a little bit lower I was a little bit outside he gets a lot of pitches and there you see Willie Hernandez having a great year form who saw him last Monday night come in and get the save for the Tigers against Toronto oh really Oh Lopez is the other guy in the bullpen the other short man but he'll probably get tonight off because Lopes pitched four innings in relief yesterday at the Waukee I'd like to see if Fernandez screwball is good this week as it was Wow and no balls and two strikes on Rambo Bobby Meacham at second base and back over his shoulder at jean-michel the third-base coach oh into account Rondon Randall's buddy here that graphic illustrates at 17 for his last 32 most hot as you going to get especially when you consider how well he hits the volume another way to write bill but again I think Yogi's thinking another run here and Negro out there is good so well on hybrid a travel so he won't advance the runner as he called it and he can ask to stay a second one away that wasn't good Owen to pitch and Randolph got good wood on it I think that's what makes baseball baseball you make a good pitch and the guy hit the down the left field line for W throw a fastball and to right down the middle and he hit the right at somebody for an out and that's the truth winegar winding is a case in point drilled a shot the Center for an out in the first thing they did the single of a fifth to extend his hitting streak to 16 and again you see a little dance that Millville Cox does after he releases the ball I think one of the worst things a pitcher can do is throw the ball towards home home plate and then recoil but that little step does it allows him to let us know met him come towards home plate and take a lot of pressure off your shoulder he gets everything he's got to give on the pitch also it gives him in a position to feel the ball [Music] not a classic delivery gotten a job done for him for years you have to give him a lot of credit as we said he's not overpowering but he come up with that split fingered fastball he has a good breaking ball which Roger Craig the pitching coach with the Tigers said he was trying to get him to throw a little bit harder so he could get more strikes with it and he moves his fastball in and out count is 2 & 1 lining it a second base and one out of the seventh inning here's that little hop we're talking about [Applause] any time I ever hop is when I struck somebody out on a 3-2 fastball a line drive was coming back it's your Shannon yeah I was talking to one berenguer who was hit in Baltimore in the head with a line drive I don't you got to work on your Billy is not that getting out of the way that's the first thing number one thing if your pitcher is to get out of the way number two is to try to get it Tramell calling for it [Applause] the second out of the seventh inning he to his second base was too down doubt and will feed on Mattingly who is driven in both Yankee run doubled in the first sacrifice fly of the fifth one for two and a bomb pitching al we first gates open even though it's a calculated risk because the guy coming up next on Baylor certainly is an essential you had to lead leading hitter up there you got to pitch very carefully and I think they're going to walk him intentionally he hears you so they'll Mattingly under that hi you're leading the league even though you do have a Don Baylor on deck the Sega Genesis did you send Jim last year you pointed a lot together he was 100 points better against left-handers and righty well it's not a move that I like to do with the pitcher because what happens is you make a mistake about Baylor you're out of the ballgame but if the move and aner will justifies it that you have to make if you're a manager to try to keep your club in the game and play the percentages it's a gutty move by a manager because Baylor breaks it up right here he's got to answer a lot of questions after the game Mike Locksley always has been at the pitcher Mattingly singles you're down three to one you have a mission for a team is leading the league in runs sport he hits a home run down you got to come up with five runs to win unique estate market concerns Don Baylor heading to 56:13 home runs 35 runs Benedict so the strategy will work right there [Music] six and a half New York to Detroit one [Applause] it takes time to create quality a quality taste of fun wiser time to select the choices two ingredients for exclusive Beach with aging to leave the distinctively clean crisp taste of Bud life quality taste as what people want on a cold glass of beer and this is the one they want somebody still cares about quality [Music] come here more beauty and a lot more fees per 40 that's today's Chevrolet that was a game saving ass this is a life saving act hi I'm Bruce Benedict last year 5 million Americans learned something that just might help save a life someday cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR if you don't know how to perform CPR call the American Heart Association of the American Red Cross baseball cares and you should too this message was furnished by major league baseball in cooperation with the Players Association Darrell Evans will lead things off for Detroit going to the bottom of the seventh anything we'll see said lemon and Larry Herndon five six and seven hitters against Phil Niekro 11 two struck out twice but if they get it Negro gets one in the wrong place it's all tied up [Applause] the bear is throwing in the Detroit bullpen [Applause] earlier Hernandez if enough air just to be getting some work for half Hernandez has already come into the dugout with his jacket on conceivable sparking the day in the next day we see outside through what a dog [Applause] we saw that graphic with Darrell Evans getting off to a great start sitting 300 first 20 games or so and then struggling since then I think one theory that you could have possibly is that they did not know him pitchers the American League coming over from the National League and also early in the year in April and May it's hard to throw out a breaking ball got the prologue you see that's ball great something the Negro doesn't want to do get denied of it and when early the year you can't throw that breaking ball over you got to throw a lot of fast falling to good lowball hitter one thing about Evan he's going to slump right now but he's the kind of guy that when he gets out he takes you right with him for about two weeks all the pitchers didn't know him but he knows he doesn't know the pitchers did either which evens it up [Applause] so Mattingly can't handle the ground ball off the Matt Evans leadoff man is on here here we get to see it again and I don't care how good a fielder you are at first base many needs stealing he could have laid back on that pole and got a fake hop rather than charging at that fast and getting it on a shard ah it's a play where you just let your pitcher cover first base make sure you catch the ball and give them a decent throw Tommy Brookins goes in to run now that's an error tried to Mattingly [Music] the crooked spent running near the seventh inning and will let it round it on and walk these the back rail for [Applause] [Music] want to go it down [Applause] one of the things that might have been thinking about it number one he doesn't know how fast or how slow Darrell Evans is and if the reflux play one of the difficult things about playing in the American League where you see sometimes months and months between big games is really you know you don't know a lot of their strengths and weaknesses only crows falling behind again - no they might be get to confess close to hip here directly but I really don't care whether you know the speed of the runner or not I think that was the careless dare one that didn't have to be made [Music] in the air to shallow right-center field with its wind field making the tacks Brookings still in first place and a1 gone now seventh-inning [Music] and Larry heard it into that fouled out and slide the center banning 247 as he comes up we thought Phil Niekro is falling behind a lot of Tiger hitters for what he's been able to do in a 203 one situation is make good pitches with a fastball that one misses I think again that exemplifies what control me throwing 77 miles per hour maybe not even that quickly to make good pitches you can be effective many many pitches length of time Eastern Mary he should be able to put it right where he wants to and he has tonight he's walk to he struck out five Tigers have had the leadoff man on in each of the last four innings the only run is through our first inning home run by Gibson our pregame show where he talked about we've been sitting back waiting for the long ball I began 100 as you say last year 20 home runs to Larry this year none admittances September 28th gonna change this guy's a good hitter he has displaced coverage better lowball hitter than high ball hitter has good power to right field pretty good breaking ball hitter did one pitch I would say you had you could get Larry hurt it out with that's a slow curveball Negro doesn't throw that saw the graphic graphic the last time up he was hitting 308 lifetime quick basket in snake burnden they wanted a date hold on we didn't start hitting them until it came near 82 first the park here might have something to do with that my characterize Herndon heat morale of the power alley that he hit the ball to right center left center and 365 the left 372 right that's in the air to shallow right field and it's Winfield with Randolph right there making the guys they going way out and I feel his calling for it and there are two down well we had an air collision here and a something is going to happen baseball when both players are going all-out to catch the ball at the last minute we could see Winfield collar for the ball and sake hey Birdman is the batter - down Brookins at first base is running krebons gangs on top to the one what again birds been heading to 91 [Applause] James rise and silliness occasionally need is but no says the plate umpire first back who may have said it made contact with a wall as we looked at it right below watch it look like lighting and that made the catch great effort nonetheless the one thing about play or watch the umpire perspective right over there with it you can see the wall the only way you can make an attempt to decide in it stopped himself with his foot hard to see on a replay whether he caught it or not and we can see that her stuck was just a little bit late getting there well might have popped out of his glove and made contact with the panic Yogi Berra leave the case they gotta look at it now if you look at it from another angle then we seem go down and slide looked like it went right into the glove then it might it looked like it starts to pop out and maybe makes contact with a tanning possibly what a play to a real tough playthrough is a little drainage ditch also that he had to be concerned whether he came over one of the difficult things that Empire had to contend with the size of the club is using that oversized blow because the knuckleball hard to see whether the ball was either trapped against the wall or just caught cleanly [Applause] and he grounds it down at first at the fair ball and Mattingly makes to play on assistant the damage is done leadoff man gets aboard and he is fans at his birth through seven pole of tigers day until Yanks to Detroit one a new design in radial tires is rolling your ways in good years l a great taste half the alcohol of argument with Howard David wants to take the title from undefeated champ edwin rosario live plus a special Olympic track and field report on ABC's Wide World of Sports Saturday [Music] Willie Hernandez comes in to pitch for the Detroit Tigers the left-hander with a good screwball acquired from Philadelphia just prior to the start of the season to an old super 109 er a and forty eight strikeouts in 56 innings and he has done the job for Sparky Anderson as we update you on the USFL action taking place where she didn't coming from behind leading Oklahoma handily and used it by a point over San Antonio in the third quarter in the bullpen for the Yankees getting in some work right now is Bob Shirley pitched well provided against the Orioles but lost lost two to one another game-winning RBI by Eddie Murray based in the ninth inning he's just throwing between starts here they Winfield leads things off in the 8th inning Whitfield one two three Willie Hernandez I just said 48 strikeouts over 50 innings the most impressive thing is only walked 14 batters but he doesn't throw that hard gets under that one a little bit force the first pitch as the great screwball two kinds of basketball he runs one in on the right-hander's and one away from a little bit of a spider so he's got four pitches to look at and he can throw him pretty much when he's effective where he wants to bring it on the cow the last week to showed us one of the best screwballs that I've seen in a long is like lake where [Music] on account Hernandez is leading the American League in appearance this is number 34 him Dan Quisenberry with 29 and as you can see he has been really thoughtfully he's basically a guy that doesn't like to walk rips into right field as a basehead if Aaron's off the skin of gets in but he keeps it in the neighborhood Moulton the water two hits tonight for Winfield who came in hitting 336 [Music] here we see a 3-1 fastball Winfield ahthe most power hitters like like to to get their arms out specs at the right field you can see the ball kind of carom off looks like Kirk Gibson's right or left hand keeps the ball in front oh no to hold him to a single that ball was hit like a three which seemed to rise well when field hit out of our Yahoo one of the American League umpires of the line drive behind first base last year and I think I'll Park it out to a month maybe it's his arms extended the ball really jumps off the fat I'd be fine here he didn't in the fourth inning with first executive lineup striking on Earl Weaver definitely following in his mid-50s would be funding some well you got that picture out there with a 1.77 earned run average Phil Niekro try to get them that X to run you got a guy at the plate who is not hitting a lick either right now campers over his last 16 all my main reason was left-hander against Dustin there's a lot of times but we know how they outfit left-handers the Orioles down pretty well every 370 is even against left-handed pitching first a left-hander with a screwball is a little different left-hander ISTE yes that's the best ditch course then there are left-handers that have schools like mike blair who would didn't feel comfortable throwing at the left-hander he throws so many down in a way to a right-hander it's not a particularly good fits to a left-handed hitter little broken bat swimmer fielded by travel and what he gets back through first day [Applause] a fastball in on a fifth [Applause] saundra liner for the out one God here in the eighth inning and now Roy Smalley will come up right-handed for the first time tonight [Music] over three facing Wilcox when seven innings gave up two runs and built that's striking on seven small e hitting 200 as a right-handed hitter season six with 30 with one homer Linfield not a big threat to steal he does have three stolen bases and if he gets a jump off of me might people everything that run in this situation you know I'm not crazy about the hit and run [Music] but it's bad port they had to double play two balls no strikes it down let's bacon be inky we've been struggling scoring runs the first eight Oriole pitching staff has scored one run on Friday night only two on Sunday it's for 8:00 on on Saturday but did hit the ball particularly hard you think they'd like to get her another runner in scoring position well this was the pitch that I used to like to hit and run on I didn't like to a no because it was a high fastball I didn't want my hitter swinging that that's when it could be three and two and one and a pitcher still trying to throw a strike one out were the eighth inning Yankees on top two to one they've out hit the Tigers 8 to 3 they've won field held on by Berkman off to his lead at first [Music] - now on smaller gripping is back [Music] there's ten we want the great line [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] due to pitch is grounded through the whole channel gets air goes through [Applause] second down TNA was falling out of her face and graffiti above Paul's nine hit particularly hard Trammell went a long way for it though gets a good throw to second base there was no chance for two on the play website [Applause] now grippy at the plate facing Hernandez for the first time and he drills into deep right field and down the line it is [ __ ] is a foul though game attention and not by much [Applause] like a little slider not particularly good pitch cloud it looked fair from here but just inside the bone though better angle here I think to tell ya no doubt [Music] that was very bad pitch glider hanging on the inside half of the place but even been worse than fair Oh they insist in a better spot that takes them nerve I just always looked at and here you see the breaking ball he gets it down to where he where he wants it actually look a little bit low strike to a neo to pitch drop down on it now back [Applause] griffey hangs in there you don't you not a lifetime 300 hitter if you can't hit left-handers I've always felt his power is it's more on the low fastball and occasionally a breaking ball that's why I said before I thought Wilcox would go away from because it limits his ability to hit home run one left-hander he's destroyed through the years Tommy John yet he drops down with a fastball this time [Music] distorted here the each of the eight and the Tigers go up in the bottom of the inning trailing New York to the water mixing cement the dusty fell enough where your Thursday night at 8:00 Eastern Time US Olympic track and field trials already underway at the LA Coliseum so we'll have some live events for your Thursday also as you look at Brian they are taking over in left field look back at Carl Lewis who has made the team in the hundred and when Moses as he attempts to continue that incredible winning streak coming up Thursday night Omar Moreno you took a look at him now in center as the Yankees make their defensive changes trying to help Negro protect the 2-1 lead as we go to the bottom of the eighth inning barbaro garbey the number nine hitter then we'll see Whitaker and Tremmel against Phil Niekro who's looking for his fifth win of the season at 217 of his career outside the garb a blow [Applause] this game to win or lose Yankees have had dialects mid their pen in a slider looked like two in a row again he falls behind he's only walked two however tonight struck out five Oh [Applause] as under it and pops it up Mitra that's that for garb a one out Kleenex off Negro Negro that's uh that's very interesting and revealing and unless what Jim mentioned before in terms of the slow starts Negro gets off dude normally 69 is 15 years Negro has one pin before the first of July and it's only what's the 18th of June he could win maybe 12 by the 1st of July way he's gone the way he's pitching in the way the Yankees bat even though heavens for the last 3 or 4 days but had something to do with a fishing they faced they were home run a couple years ago in the Braves won the division title 1982 at a very key game in San Diego last weekend we see we interesting to see whether he throws Whitaker a basketball as we said who's capable of hitting that pitch out let's see what he does [Applause] right there the count is full Leigha to spider in a perfect spot that are a knuckleball but it was an excellent [ __ ] he's just not doing exactly what you want to do is to get behind the hitters but when he does he's been able to make good pitches and the great soon he struck that six strikeouts now for Phil Niekro but with two down the eighth inning Alan Trammell comes up cold for three tonight elsewhere in section 6 California one as we go to the ninth and Anaheim came the city and Oakland are underway nothing nothing there is nothing nothing at the Kingdome white sox facing the Mariners montreal again terrain out against st. Louis what ago the got to travel [Applause] now time is gone looks like Jeff floorboard going in about former manager of the Indians in one of the Yankee pitching coaches well I don't know if this is a good time to spoil fit you like Negro up right now he's gone after the hitters one at a time one pitch at a time he's shown a lot of emotion on the mound he wants to get him himself meanwhile Ray's Pantanal going 300 in the Yankee bullpen there is fond of a left-hander who began to hear the starting rotation [Applause] yogi berra watching his club out in front through to longer jean-michel former Yankee manager and Lou Pinella who retired Saturday the travel one in one Lou Pinella of course is a Yankee coats originated the Doug addy while he was playing in Ruby hanky netting expected one ball two strikes [Applause] [Music] I asked what she was working on he said Don Mattingly and de Winne fill certain hahaha why and he fades on it and makes the catch suicide aside for the Tigers in the bottom of the ninth will have Gibson Parrish and Evans coming up for the Yankee who come to bat at the top of the inning leading by a score of two to one and will be back in Detroit after this word from your local station two frozen embryos whose would be parents and USFL Michigan leading Oklahoma as they battle for a playoff spot 3470 Nike was taking place not far from here at the Silverdome school board in the stadium had it long before San Antonio 23 used in 21 in the fourth quarter nice surprise usfl action coming up at 2:30 this Sunday final weekend of the regular season white socks came up with for the top of the first inning Richard Johnson working against Matt young and that one for nothing Chicago bottom of the first inning in Seattle here as you look at the other scores Texas leading California casing and Oakland Oh score here it's two to one the Yankees on top as we go to the ninth inning and will in turn and is trying to keep it close facing Bobby Meacham Willie Randolph looks Flanagan look at that Chicago White Sox team last year they led the majors with 800 runs Charlie Lau no longer is with us passed away in the winter and they've been struggling all offensively I think one of the finest hitting coaches that I ever saw in baseball I'm sure they really meant it yes they do but regulars it is be given them the power they need right now and either is called incest also from the last year even though the White Sox won by a mile they didn't break it open until very late the Year flyball into right field and at Gibson [Music] [Applause] the rainbow will be the batter again we're late tuners in local news we'll be following a midnight line here in Detroit as we are the ninth inning and you've got to run in the 1st and Detroit countered on a home run by Gibson but it's been all Negro since and the Yankees added a run in the fifth inning on a double by rainbow single by winegar fly ball by Mattingly the difference a destructive right and right into Gibson's glove Randolph and gypsum it was a struggle an apple there Kenny seemed to be troubled by the light [Music] I've always thought they had the best lights here because I've never played right field so I wouldn't know if they're in your eyes when you have to reply ball or a line drive but I definitely think that I've always kind of wished that they have a couple of bulbs burn out good spirits hitter see the ball extremely well here well there's almost as many balls lost in the light at night as there are Sun in the daytime winegar pops it up into shallow left field quickening is we have to flee down the biggest Asian brace for our local safety that's coming up here as we go to the bottom of the ninth inning more still New York to Detroit one and we'll be back after this from our local station she said she's unpredictable she's Delia she's back on Ryan Rivera has been a somewhat infantile van there season the manager of the Yankees in this team 19 games back and I caught the Lawrence Peterborough before the game what about for you a couple of months into the season you're under the microscope as any manager in New York is all of the rumors all of the yogi is now Yogi's in this and that everything that squirrels around the New York manager no matter who he is have you adapted to it over the past couple of months and your feelings about your situation right now well I just go to the ballpark every day I'm still there that's all I know that doesn't bother me that much it really doesn't you know that's every managers mind I guess if you're hard to be fired up it's what this games about and then I'm enjoying managing I really good you know we're all so caught up on yeah Baltimore will get is up for 15 days now that's gonna be pretty tough to force like mm like you said the managing point you do the best you can it so I can do and tonight the bestie 10 has been good enough through eight through eight Manhattan five to the one as we go to the bottom of - al michaels jim palmer or weaver with you but Detroit or thanks Dalen Rosberg as usual a super job up here in the booth with the numbers D versus the graphics information from downstairs as you look at Phil Niekro working on Gibson in the bottom of the ninth inning it's been a home run in the first a single in the fourth any slide out of the three is low ball one now if you're going to ask somebody what makes a pitcher successful probably three of the criterias with the velocity movement and location Phil Niekro throwing 77 miles per hour when he throws that fastball certainly doesn't house that but he has been uncle's all been moving he thought yeah I've got a lot of movement on that microphone and he keeps falling behind this was been a pattern for him tonight he's behind here too and oh and yet his control hasn't costume to walk Frank out through 8:00 and gypsum pops it up in foul ground that may be playable that will be for slowly one out so Gibson on a to open bowels out Parrish who's the baddest boy what would they have done without Negro this season looking for a sample in executive producer ABC sports through an Ireland Dennis Lu introducing tonight's team directed by jet 43 and feature produced by Peter Lasser technical director Leslie white associate director John persona assistant to the producer Elyse packet Kelly Drysdale voter of the Big D helping us out in the food as well outside well one you get behind in the suit of one ballgame you know you got to go right after that hitter because you don't want to bring that winning run to the plate [Applause] you know if Negro does not give up a run in this inning his er alb 171 that will be best in the league the mo the head of storm Davis of Baltimore [Applause] [Music] foul ball let's do Emmons the city designated hitter Brookins went into pinch run for him so they needed be aged and rob is out on a deck in a fastball pitcher in the night any a lot of times and goliath basketball with that knuckleball with tooth dancing all the way through they thought about movement nary a few giant rope to thank me for glorifying last monday night by calling one of the my compass out from all the world's greatest hitters I told him I said you may not go to the real Hall of Fame but you're in mind [Applause] one ball two strikes the count on Paris and he Mattingly wanted to [Applause] Tigers with three heads tonight Gibson hit that home run in the first and a base hit by of anaphora Whitaker singled to right in a Sexton incident quite honest you don't win 277 games and possibly 278 Darren fits 4700 endings if you don't have a lot of guts and as we said he hasn't pitched that many complete games this year with Righetti out there but they certainly needed one tonight and really only one batter staying between him and a complete game win that's Johnny Grubb that a tough [Applause] Steve Carlton has more wins if you look at the Texas California final 60 rangers Quadra 300 for lifetime win among the active said receiver 279 this would be 278 for Negro the father for the moment anyway with 268 you heard Darrell Evans talked earlier about fitting waiting drugs wait very well rayona lemonade's on deck again a not uncommon situation with Nico 3 at always and free at all and several better tonight this is worthy the old axiom world you can tell me it can't get beat before the big you handles on the first day that's the last thing I will he wanted to do so it sends the winning run to the plate get lemon as yogi huh for you and in glorious intrigue to be playing surface well I think eternal labor men I think he's going to go out there and ask him how he feel or think that's the type of relationship you have with a veteran pitcher like deeper oh of course you never had that relationship with me already made up your mind before you got there which is I think probably the right thing to do yogi really in his mind should know whether he's going to stay in or not unless he would tell him something to the contrary he stays in with Rijo and klockan all in the bullpen and lemon is the batter lemon time for the team lead in home runs with ten variety is grounded assured walk flied to white two out they setting to one Yankees rabbit fur barking look [Music] brings to mind something Sparky told me before the game he told his players when he first got here he said I'm never going to win a game for it I'm going to put you in there and I'll put you in a position where you can win it for us he's up there with a chance to put another win in the column for the Tigers [Applause] and the one 1/2 lemon is in dessert we're showing a lot of emotion he wants it [Applause] [Music] trying to go all the way for the third time this season [Applause] the lemon is inside her did is to attack don't think the Phil Niekro doesn't know that Larry Herndon over the years who did him well the tough situation three and one do you throw him a fastball for a strike to take a chance from getting a home run at two said he had good car at the 10 home runs or in these guys are thinking and he's going to go to the bullpen well or says something is the last moment he's got burned in a right-handed batter he's got really right-handers Fontenot is the left-hander in the bullpen and negro [Applause] it's going to come out with two out of the ninth-inning and the tying and winning run aboard so real at age 19 replaces Negro at age 45 and we'll see if Sparky goes to the bench or whether a ops were earned in here lengthening game of the line and we'll be coming back to Detroit the ball cup Chevy truck are you couple born May 13 1965 today Phil Niekro littles first major leading safety native of the Dominican Republic one in six one save as you look at the runners tying run as druggies at second and now rusty Kuntz comes in to run for grub so push is the tying run and there's a winning run lemon at first base Herndon is the batter as one say he saved the game from Heathrow in April team has opened walk 28 in fifty three innings so they told you something about his control to honor to us with go away definitely overthrew that [ __ ] again the Yankees would love to go to the fan and bring in Righetti but he's on the disabled list [Applause] and herndon fouls it back what it was [Applause] and then something first here hasn't hit very well but he's sitting up there you look a while was a real Woodrow mid 90s are hurting had a pretty good want to help it mainly because with a little fastball here's a little life though here's
