track to twin injector blades for the best injector shave of your life and just a gorgeous day here in Oakland California a bright sunshiny afternoon temperature in the 70s and a slight breeze blowing out from home plate to center field. The weather man says we're going to have good weather for Game 2 also tomorrow. Hi everybody. I'm Curt Gowdy and on behalf of NBC Sports. Welcome to the World Series. And will the real New York Mets stand up for the 73 World Series. I don't mean the team that struggled most of the year and finally wound their division just three games over 500. I mean the team that won 20 of their last 28 game and then I pledge to not hit the Cincinnati Reds but the National League. They're healthy. That's the team that the Oakland A's are the defending world champs. They have been made the favorites to win this series. But they think they're going to have an intense struggle in beating the Mets two left handers today. John Matlock the brilliant young left hander on the mound for the New York Mets. Ken Holtzman for the Oakland A's and two players will be starting in center field who didn't think they'd be there for the opening of the series. Willie Mays or the New York Mets. Reggie Jackson in centerfield today for the Oakland A's. Speaking of the A's a man who seen every A's game in the last twelve years but an outstanding broadcaster for them money more. Our colleague here. Manny let me ask you something. Is this Oakland team this season that are the team that won the world title last year. Curt we think it is for several reasons. Number one Reggie Jackson is here today. He wasn't in the World Series last year and he led the league in home runs in RB eyes Ray passes better behind the plate. We are better defensively as a catcher. And this year we have a better bullpen. Even with Rollie Fingers as good as he was last year and by the blue is here as a starter this year. So yes I think we're better. All right. How about this is your home fire. How about thanking the fans of America and showing us some of the highlights of the open policy in for baseball. OK. This park is very normal as far as justices go for home runs so there are no consequential dimensions there but in left field and we won't talk about it more later. That's the son field here for afternoon ball games this time of year. And the ball carries very well out that way so we could see some homerun hit there in the day games here. Moving over to Center Field we have a little visibility problem for batters. The last section of seats right before that white concrete section there gives the batters a little bit of trouble coming off the mound. The ball is obliterated somewhat by that like concrete. And by the fans the right field sector here at the Oakland Coliseum is normal industrious again 330 feet. But there is one very important factor here as far as pitching goes between first base and the stands. It is a very large distance maybe one of the longest in Major League Baseball for any park. And a lot of foul pops are cut over there that would be in the stands and other parts such as Shea Stadium. So that is a factor also in case they try to pick a runner up. They throw a ball away over there is three bases Tony Kovak my colleague on a Saturday game of the week. Monday night baseball will be with us here in the booth analyzing the plays. And right now he's been down on the field for this game and he taped interviews with the two field captains Sal Bando the Oakland A's but Harrelson The New York Mets. Sal you haven't seen each other as far as teams I guess on television but not in spring training. What do you know about the A's buddy. Well fortunately Tony we watched him in the World Series last year while we were at home. And they do have a few fellows that were in our league that might be an advantage but it might also be a disadvantage because they also know our pitching staff. So what do you know about the Mets. Well like you say other than TV I think it goes back to 1969 in a World Series and then with some of the national leaders around was talking about it but really I've never seen them play on TV. I did make a big deal of scouting reports. You haven't had too much time to look at it because you guys just 22 days ago or one and you wanted about a day ago. What do you know about Buddy Harold what are you scouting reports telling him. Well that you know he goes the opposite way and I don't want to beat you with a homerun myself. He busts a lot. He's got good speed and he's a poor defensive third baseman so I hope this guy reports are correct. All right Harrelson Sal Bando thanks a lot. Good luck during the World Series you heard it right from the experts. The team leaders on this team. Those are the scouting reports that go back upstairs. Okay. Those are the scouting reports. We're going to have a wild world story there and they're that accurate. All right we're ready down on the field now. We're going to have the introduction of the players of the Mets and the Oakland A's and then we'll have the ceremonial first pitch. Let's join the activities down on the field here at the open Coliseum. Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. Oh me. He. La la la la me. Whose broad spry son right. Bob ow ow ow ow ow three were for GA re mi fa o o da la la la o o o o o o o Will it act the ceremonial first pitch of game one of the nineteen seventy three World Series in just a moment. We are honored this afternoon to have one of baseball's all time greats throughout the first ball is seven hundred and thirteen home runs are just one behind the career record of Babe Ruth the incomparable Henry Aaron Aaron at the first bit like he does everything else without a flourish just getting his job done year after year game after game it seems drained money to see him behind the American League dugout today. Yes it really does curt and we're talking about just before the ball game but Henry has been out here on the west coast making some appearances and Anderson has some more to make real soon. We're delighted he could be here today to throw out the first pitch only fitting or the drama he's brought to baseball this year. That's the Oakland dugout taking a bale. Got a raw next umpires is assigned to the game behind the plate. Marty's brings that to the American League. The veteran is the first base umpire aka Donna Kelley of the National League. You're a new Decker of the American League working second base all prior to the National League of third. Russell gets to the American League down the left to align and Harry Wendell stead of an active league. We'll be working the right to align the first World Series for all three of the American League umpire Kenneth Dale Holtzman who pitched his best game of the series in the playoffs against Baltimore last Tuesday 2 to 1 victory eleven innings allowing just three hits walked only one he had tremendous stuff and had his control. He struck out seven in that game. The only run he allowed was a home run by Earl Williams. He had 10 days rest before that game and he said he needed the rest. We'll take a look at him in slow motion. You can study the motion Tony against Baltimore too primarily fastballs I guess of about one hundred and ten or fifteen pitches he threw he threw just eight breaking pitches. I think it's going to be a surprise for this Mets team to see a different Kenny Holtzman than he remembered when he pitched for the Chicago Cubs. He's had trouble with the New York Mets. His lifetime record while he was in the National League with the Cubs four wins nine losses against the Mets. And he didn't beat him the last two years he was in the National League the first batter of the 1973 World Series the seventy of World Series by the way. Is Wayne Garrett who had a sizzling month of September to lead the Mets in the batting average for that month. But he's had a poor play off with a bat. He had only two hits and twenty three times up in the playoffs his seasonal average was fifty six. They play him a couple of steps toward right. The first pitch of the series is half foul out of play. Garrett usually goes for the first pitch. I was about to warn you that the first ball hitting batter me on is on deck. And then Willie Mays here at born in Brooksville Florida lives in Sarasota Florida. Fastball is a little low. One ball one strike. Holzman this year twenty one wins 13 losses a 19 game winner last year. Now back to the A's traded him that Rick money to the club Monday helped the club and hopefully have certainly been a big aid to the Oakland A's. He attended the University of Illinois receiving a B.S. degree in business and 67 curve ball has popped up. Sal Bando the third baseman there and we have the feel me on that then I want to tell you that this telecast is presented by authority of major league baseball is intended solely for the private noncommercial use of our audience. Any publication reproduction retransmission or other use of the pictures descriptions and accounts of this game without the expressed written consent of the commissioner of baseball is prohibited. Felix Meehan according to some experts the most underrated player in this world series is to ninety for the season and he hit 316 in the playoffs left the ball around ball one doing. You'll notice how he chokes up on the bat. Extreme jogging up with a hand. The ground ball hits sharply to degrees rain over the Willie Mays. Coming up after the handball Willie Mays 42 years old. Across the bay cheered today by American League fans the drive fouled on the right line. Pause briefly for station identification. The NBC television network all right we're back here in Oakland Willie Mays for the regular season had a 211 average plagued with injuries. Now he's already announced his retirement. He didn't expect a guy or even play in this race. The foul out of play strike two. This is Willie's fourth World Series. He played for the Giants and 51 54. And for San Francisco Giants in 62 came up with a pinch hitter against the Rex had one hit three times up in the playoffs. He has bad shoulders and knees now but he's pressed into action and a rescue style is not up to a stop tested his left shoulder his right shoulder yeah right shoulder I believe and just too painful for Rusty style to play today. Two down nobody on the Mets batting in the first inning last fall as low two and two to Willie Mays. And how ironic all money that Willie Mays is across the bay that came back here for game six or seven could wind up his career in the Bay Area. But on the opposite side is Tommy the only game he's ever played here on this side of the bay. The Czechs winger made the ball three 20 second National League season and Henry Aaron sitting over there in back of the American League dugout Ian Mays of course had their dramatic batting battles over the years afraid to delivery. Mays hit the ground ball and made lefty usually losing his half and half they only lost it when he left home plate. They're the first hit of the series and Willie Mays gets hurt one significant factor shown in that picture right there in the two leagues the National League players must wear a batting helmet batting but on the baseband they don't have to. The American League runners have to wear the helmet on the base back. Leon Jones a disappointing first half of the season for the Mets but how he got going in those last 28 games wound up with a 260 average eleven homers forty eight RBI and he hit three hundred in the playoffs. He could hit the ball or right center with power. That's why they're playing him at the strike. Reggie Jackson is in right center for him and Hayes who's the Lou shading the right field line. They leave the open area left center made the first two down. Willie Stoll only one basis here. They're the bouncing ball exactly to the back. Hoffman throws him out in the bag go run one hit no one left the first half and gone 0 0 and there is Jonathan Trump. Bauer Matt Black who pitched the greatest game of his life last Sunday to hitter against the Cincinnati Reds 14 wins 16 losses the hardest drawing left hander in the National League he was rookie of the year in 1972. And every time a National League club or an American League club as talk trade with the Mets personally know they can't get Seaver the man that is most sought after is Matt lack. Kurt there was a scouting report that was not too accurate. John Matt lacked the A's Matt before this ballgame and yesterday said he does not have a good fastball he's a breaking ball pitcher Darren Johnson a former National leaguer stood up and said wait a second. He's about an inch behind fastball wise Tom Seaver. He's got a good one. Well he struck out two hundred five batters in 210 innings or two hundred and forty two innings. He was up in the top for a finished third in strikeouts in the National League. And here's Burke campaigners leading off to 250 on the air a strike to aim and had a hit in every one of the playoff games. The only player of the Baltimore and Oakland squads to do so he was just super in the playoffs. That lack delivers a curve as follow a strike to on deck will be Joe Rudy and then Sal Bando. This is a primarily right handed hitting batter in batting order Brooklyn Jackson the left handed hitter and Holzman seem strange to see that pitcher back in the number nine spot in the American League. Let's talk about that and then if Katherine Harris pops it up Felix me on the Mets second baseman is one down in interleague play the designated batting role is not in effect. We asked Dick what is before the game. Would it be a disadvantage to his team. He said no fair for one fair rule. We have some good hitting pitchers. They've been practicing. Joe roadie hit 270 for the year strep throat he had all kinds of things happen to him. He was like some of the Met players and finally got healthy in the last part of the year. He was our most reliable player last year and had a great World Series a perv strike doing nothing a one we have no score last of the first inning won out and nobody on the defending world champs the Oakland A's Rudy at 12 homers this year 66 RBI to play him just a shade the left that lacks inside ball to Curt because he lost a lot of his power. He has changed his batting stance the last year really closed up at the plate but Sal Bando told him during a slumping period this year you need to open up a little bit to get that power back and he's done it. One ball one strike that you already have that drive and a better feel. That is the outstanding little shortstop for the Mets who has the reins steady hands and a good arm ball not hit hard at the end of the bat I think that like pull a sleigh little bit Harrelson and a long way to go and just call it like an ice cream cone and the webbing of his glove. That's what this team has improved so immensely with me on his steadiness. Harrelson coming off the injury list Sal Bando the captain of the A's hit to 88 for the year twenty nine homers ninety eight runs batted in his best year and he looks at a high curve ball one that lacked the fastball curve ball pitcher. He doesn't have any freak deliveries and good control for a young left hander. Foul ball one on one. The average three point seven walks per nine innings this year not as good as last year when he averaged two points six walked every nine innings but he's not all over. He is fairly consistent the 1 1 delivery to Bando with two down nobody on the five ball at the left field on a change up Jones takes it and the side that one two three at the end of the first inning 00 cut we talk to John Miller the hitter step stepping in right now against Kenny Holtzman about batting against Holtzman he's never seen it before far sure he had to say well he's a left handed out they say throw the ball real well he was drawing and we was in a national league and I think look for some hot stuff in and out maybe the breaking ball away they changed a lot. I don't know why you don't think you. Turn it over to me so I'll be most looking for the heart stopping and breaking ball away and ball one strike one now. John Miller Jerry Brody Don Juan for the Mets in the second inning. Miller didn't hit too much the last month. I call him The Hammer. He's in East Point Georgia. Born in Atlanta Georgia he's young he's just 23 years old. Yeah a lively bat though the ball jumps off the he has good power. Twenty three homers he should be a good one for the future for the Mets. The fly ball out in the left center Reggie Jackson's over there and we have one down the regular center fielder Phil Nas had an outstanding season playing well defensively stealing over 50 bases he has a bad ankle and he is not on the active list and so with the left hander going today and hey is this the low swinging a hot bat they move Jackson from right the center this is the first time Jackson's played center field this year right the money that's right guard and in spring training he never was even in a game down there because we had five men fighting for their job and they wanted to leave Reggie in right field and lose in right field the batter is growing at 256 for the season with one Homer thirty RB eyes and they're playing him to right field Jackson's over and right center and Hazel to lose and right toward the line Hulsman low ball two it doesn't look quite as sharp to me Money Hulsman as he did last Tuesday against Baltimore that was one of his best days ever and he was really built up for it Kenny sometimes gets a little quicker later in the game Kurt won out nobody on we have no score in the second inning the ground ball to the right side green up with it the A's infield vandals a third cap and errors short green of second tennis playing first Rudy is the left fielder Jackson's the center fielder and he's this blue the right fielder Ray philosophy behind the plate Don Horne born in San Francisco lives in Campbell California to twenty nine hit or not much with a bat but a fine defensive player of all four strike one in the playoffs. Though he had four out of 17 takes a big swing swings in the hill usually doesn't hit the long ball they're playing in shallow and toward right. Interesting to see after the scouting report where these outfielders play the batters trying to go to right field without a strike two. A lot depends on who's pitching I remember when I was a youngster I used to hear about that old white shirt sleeve crowd at Wrigley Field Chicago I it wasn't the batters at the inside. Today the hitters are looking into a short sleeve crowd as the background is with our handheld camera by the way. That's the background out there in the bleachers. The ball comes out of that background. Purvis Frank to former major league stars are in the coaching box today for the A's Irv Norton an outfielder for 11 years is coaching a third and Jerry Adair. He used to be a fine defensive second baseman just coaching at first base. Reggie Jackson jeans tennis and is the are the three scheduled batters with the A's in the last of the second. Jackson and tennis did not deliver in the playoffs. They did not rise in a run. Jackson led the American League with 32 homers one hundred and seventeen RBI and hit a healthy two ninety three. But he injured a hamstring muscle at the end of the year. Then he had a virus didn't any money get a strep throat that throw him down for the last three games and in the first four days of practice prior to playoffs. He probably lost them timing lost the groove in his swing back and he's going up against left handed pitching in this three separate times Tom. Tomorrow it will be Kuzma And Vida Blue left handers again will have right handers Tuesday night at Shea Stadium ball Tom Seaver and catfish Hunter will has quite a matchup they're all good match ups both clubs have outstanding pitching free 20 game winners the A's and you all know how good the Mets are the pitching department the 1 1 delivery Jackson's right to one ball two strikes the on deck batter Jean tennis the most valuable player of the nineteen seventy two World Series we made several comments last year during the telecast Geno would hit those home runs seemed to surprise everybody that if he played a whole bunch that lacks pitch pitcher that five or a ball like Matt lax thinking they're telling a story that he and his wife were wallpapering your home in matlab for half the paper on upside down I didn't know what to do I just decided to put it all on upside down it's beautiful outside ball three three and two the man has creativity that's how a left hand has got their reputation right. Easier to put the other half on and take a half you've already got on all business have what he thought is also economic or agreeing to the Jack nobody I'm nobody out back in the hopper to Bud Harrelson and a little Mets shortstop puts him away. There's one down in the last of the second with the A's Dick Williams who has won three pennants now as a manager sixty seven seventy to sixty seven with a red sox 72 and 73 here with the ace Gene tennis at 258 this year. As Yogi Berra there's already a new Yogi Berra story going around the ballpark with Daley about as Matlock next to him. Knowing him at that savor I mean 184 homers were tennis 84 RBI at the strike somebody is supposed to have gone into the dugout today and the fact that Yogi one of the writers the other a million Yogi Berra stories over the years strike that you know we know all about the pitching and batting How about the intangibles and youngest poster said Well only two guys I know are campaigners and I believe all that and be true to strikes the gene tennis and drags out a lightning fast ball first strike out from that lack who says he's not as nervous today as he was in the playoffs that I was scared to death last night that he should be frightened out of his mind every day two down nobody on Hey Sulu picked up by the A's from the Houston Astros in August wound up hitting three or six in the American League he had to hit six times up in the playoffs and like Willie Mays he used to be across the bay with the Giants. In fact one afternoon the three Alou brothers Matty believe that Hayes's played the outfield for the San Francisco Giants he has that off the bat handle the first baseman Miller and Matlab just overpowered them in the second inning. We have three down at the end of two. Nothing. Nothing. Happy forty seventh birthday today the Adios coaching a third for the New York Mets. Roy McMillan who for time led the National League is the best fielding shortstop 16 years in the National League is coaching at first and Bud Harrelson will lead off for the Mets in the third inning. Ball under a you fans that take a look at the center fielder to the left or to the right of that open area. If it's not a sellout they put a green tarp over there to give the batter a green background. I think you're having trouble seeing the ball today with the fans with their white shirt sleeves and can't you see that one of the wide strip of concrete that shows right there the ball comes right out of that hole Simmons last pitch came right out of that white concrete just a little bit of it but it's above the fence right there. Watch where the ball comes. There it is right out of it and the Tony cube I like to have him come and it doesn't take much to lose that ball. Tony in the background either Holzman or Matt lacked as empowering as overpowering as they can be need that. The ball comes out dark. You cannot see the spin on the ball change of speeds are very effective. He has walked Harrelson on four pitches but it hit 250 80. By the way was graduated from Sunset High in Hayward California very close to the Oakland Coliseum and he attended San Francisco State College Kearney on Matlock is up now. He was on one hundred and thirty five pound quarterback in high school football here and the captain of three different teams basketball baseball and football. He's a spirited competitor. The score is nothing nothing in the third inning. You're looking for the bat and they have green charging there that play for you. The second baseman Green came charging in with a first baseman holding tennis. You don't see that too often. Curt we didn't see it much this year because of the designated hitter rule the pitchers weren't up to a month that much but Green did that a whole lot last year for the A's. That means cap and errors with cover second this time he holds back. But Hoffman picks it up throws the green mat black lays down a perfect sacrifice and moves Bud Harrelson into scoring position. Curt Dick Williams famous of course for trick plays his team works on it all spring training and money. You probably know more of these places this club all year long. Sal Bando has a lot to do with calling these Dundee. He calls every one of them after he gets the sign from Dick Williams and all the infielders take a look at Bando for the signs which you'll usually give us fake signs or on the shirt. All right we have our first man in scoring position but Harrelson a second one out the Mets and the A's are nothing nothing is the top of the order Gareth. The batter strike on a high fastball Garrett foul out his first time up Wayne Garrett with 16 homers has some punch for an infielder as the note tells you lay him to write Altman as inside ball and strike one so far Hulsman doesn't appear to us as sharp as he was last year he doesn't seem to be quite as fast and he's struggling a bit with his control against the Orioles. He was 0 and 2 1 and 2 and most of the batter the head of the hitters went for a high inside pitch and foul at back 1 and 2. By the way we do not have a sell out but this opening game of the World Series. Here are some empty seats high in the grandstands. Down the left and right field area. That's the spot up to the right and in the upper left field area One ball two strikes Dwayne Garrett won out but Harrelson a second her basked in the dirt to and to the Mets have the only hit so far. That was by Willie Mays in the first inning. Ken Holtzman has pledged to no hitters in his career in the majors. Nolan Ryan Don Wilson and Bill Stoneman are other active pitchers have done it. Ball often pitched a no hitter against Atlanta and sixty nine did not strike out a pattern that no hitter an oddity. And he pitched a no hitter against Cincinnati in 71. Twenty seven years old graduated from Universal City Missouri High School in 63. TURNER I think Well Kenny Holzman Ray pass you know that Kenny is getting away with what might be some bad pitches under normal condition that look like a fastball right down the middle. Garrett was late by crowds Wayne Garrett the ball for a strike to the full character won out. But Harrelson had second rate poverty as an unusual have a watching here. He steps behind the batter to return the ball to the mound. I've never seen the catcher do this like it even throws over the shoulder and behind the batter. Most of them just raise up and flip it back over the plate and Curt it doesn't matter if it's the left or right hander the right handed batter he goes the other way to do it. Brian to the Wayne Garrett one out here else in a second pop up down the first base line. They give way to Gene tennis and he has it in foul ground or two down his wife that Garrett popped up. Felix Meehan comes up usually makes contact the ground it out his first time curb that habit that he has. I can see him doing it with a left handed hitter I guess. And I've seen in the minor leagues that in the major league level with a man on base you can hit the batter's bat the ball can bounce back or the back of his head with the right hand hitter I don't know why he does it away from me. His record in the playoffs two outs but Harrelson of Second the Mets nothing. The A's nothing we're the top of the third inning. A strike on the inside corner having a 1 The feel is very shallow for me. And so the opposite field I figure that he won't hit the long ball. They'll try and punch it somewhere. One strike now back in the span of go to writes back to Holtzman boring and with a fastball I'm struck at only twenty two times and one hundred and fifty three games this year. He ranks among the leaders in the National League and the toughest to strike out. He's been in the top five the last five years of a hard batter to ban to strike pitch high wanted to hurt buddy Harrelson down on second base is getting an extra long lead knowing that outfield is playing so shallow for me on any ball hit out there he knows he's really going to have to hustle and get a good jump with that good lead to score. Jackson has a good throwing arm Rudy is very accurate is he not money. Yes he has a good arm I haven't seen a Lou throw that much but Rudy and Jackson are strong throwers One ball two strikes to Felix me on but Harrelson getting his lead are two down meant for a high fastball and fouled away the Mets have been reaching for some bad pitches so far pitches out of the strike zone Curt there's a factor here too the grass in the outfield at this ballpark is very thick and there is not going to football game played on it to turn it up in about a month so the ball will roll fairly slowly going up there and that could help a runner also Al Davis of the Oakland Raiders thinks he may never get back in here again there a bouncing ball to Bando a third he'll go to first wide throw a defender is usually very accurate but he nearly threw that went away no run no hit. One man left two and a half gone 0 0 0 at a very attractive football baseball doubleheader on NBC tomorrow. We'll begin with NFL football at 1 p.m. you'll see either Baltimore and Buffalo OJ running wild this year New York New England or Pittsburgh Cincinnati qualify. Game two of the worlds there is with the baseball world and Joe Garagiola beginning at 4:00 p.m. Check your local listings for the NFL game in your area. The last of the third inning here in the Oakland Coliseum the first six A's batters up have been retired and they'll send up posse green and Holzman to face John Matlock one hit in the game and that's been by Willie Mays here the high pop twisting outside for John Miller scrambling for he hasn't had one down and John Matlock is picking right up where he left off last Sunday in Cincinnati and there is one of those foul ups turned out in no man's land here at the Oakland Coliseum. That one didn't really go that far off the foul line but it was very close to what would have been in the season another part. You'd be amazed at how the big foul area has help a pitcher a couple of foul balls in the seats and boom like come up with a couple of men on a hit one out over the year that averages out the foul area there great eight to a pitcher catching a foul ball foul away by Dick Green Matt lack really seems in the groove in his last three starts two games during a regular season the playoff he's allowed just one run. He beat St. Lewis to nothing lost to the Cubs won nothing in the playoff game beat Cincinnati five. Nothing inside. So far he has stopped the A's called retiring the first seven batters up one one count the Dick Green dick looks at the curb high two at one decade to 60 this year. Yeah some punch to right center although they're playing straight away. And drive a ball deep into right center especially a pitch high and outside over the plate. Football is in a strike here to get a grand slam home run against the California Angels to win a game this year that knocked Bobby Valentine who was an outstanding center fielder for the Angels because Bobby made a trap with the ball and ran into the fence and shattered his leg. Green is on and you saw can hope on deck which was a strange spot for him because the American League pitcher did not hit home but did come up one time. He's one of the better hitting pitchers. He walked in at one time up Catfish Hunter is the best hitting veteran team and hopefully that's right with him right behind it. Interesting to see if not funding all season long against game type competition will affect the funding of these pitches from open Tony Dick believes that they've been taking a lot of extra funding practice special drills on buddy. They brought in Bernie deliverables of the Detroit Tigers organization one of the outstanding funding coaches to teach them as a football ball. Strike one the cat Holtzman they have their first base runner on radio walk Jack Williams with a sweat now big boy looks out again. Well they've been drilling on funding with these pitchers after they clinched their division. And squared away again and rise above. Here's the man going a second. And he's out at second base but Harrelson took the role. BRODY Right on the button with it. Kirk this is one thing we should see a lot of in this series to find catchers with good quick throwing arms good mobility Brody keeping the ball out in front of him. Here comes Green he thought the ball and bounded away a little bit farther McGroarty was on it like a cat with a perfect throw to Harrelson. Ray parsley through four or five Orioles out attempting a steal in the American League playoffs. You're right. Donny Osmond curve is over one ball two strikes. Burt cap and on deck. LAUGHTER The third inning 0 0 just inside 2 and 2 open lifetime batting average in the majors 158. And he hit two home runs when a Negro. And Jim McLaughlin who lost his base outside three to one out. That lacked what Green Green was growing up and now he runs the calf ran to the mound opponent Ken Holtzman Holzman hit the ball right back our way. What a day. Never Sure. Let's be in the high 70s. Just a slight breeze a perfect day in a short right. Basking in the warm California sun sharp drop off grandma they. I hope that it makes the turn is going to. He's in with a double to the. We got a pass but we're going to have to get on base. Looking hopeful right now. Hit the base awfully hard labor has not slid all season long. Watch our ladies slide to the wrist injury. He still has his head bent over to second base looking to hit that back. I've just yet experience the season of not having had the slide. Another thing they haven't had to run that short dash before either Tony they haven't done any running Garrett was drawn energy and hopefully with slap that ball behind theirs. Jones firing in a second but too late. Now the A's have their first kiss and their first man in scoring position. They have two down and Burke camp and Arizona. He popped up his first time 0 0 score last of the third. The A's are threatening dancing around beyond trying to bluff Holtzman back benchers on the inside corners back to camp on earth Katherine Harris in the playoff gets two homers knocked in three runs. If more homers all year said a funny career birdie at twenty two home runs one season about the back strike to a bird camp on earth he can fly to first base puts the pressure on infielder they know they have to unload quickly it will be interesting to see these A's and how they will attempt to run on Willie Mays and the ball at you because he cannot throw well anymore and nor Norris should really bring those men around third baseman in the men's direction that a bad throwing shoulder now the this strike delivery I grab all the right side. I left the. Wow. Backing up on the ball. May I say a little insecurity. Well there is pressure I don't know. But he came up to Seoul with data that nearly was a dead man letting the ball play him. He is charged with an error and now you have one of the premier base dealers in baseball at first heard Katherine Harris who stole 34 bases in 44. Tim Yo Rudy was robbed of a visit by Bud Harrell for the first time half an Harris jockeying for his lead one in nothing Oakland ahead of the last of the third Matt Black there's not really not acceptable the holding runner does not have a good move to first base you a look at home and got a first hand look at the runner and then come home just obvious to a base stealer. Plus watch that knee kick have an Earth Henley studying the feature now two down one run in last of the third the A's the head one nothing a curve is over that your wrote a strike one error was you may have picked it up he was looking at camp at errors he came home he does the opposite when he's going to first base and camp he's really got a big league card he comes right now that gets a much bigger lead against left hand pitchers and he does the right handers unusual he said he can see the ball better one strike eroding that like rising back to up to out nobody I went can hope for a double game in the score on the error committed by Felix me I let go of all the break my captain errors our John Matlock I don't know if I would have wanted to throw as often as he did the first base and left camp at errors take that much or many looks at my move this early in the series and ballgame. Both teams have had bad breaks with injuries with that Rusty stabber who was really swinging a mean bat for the Mets in the playoffs and they is this bill north we stole fifty three bases during the regular year and missed the last 13 games of the season Curt he had it made as far as stolen base championship up until that time his great roadie slammed the foul to the third base coaching box into the A's bullpen let's take a look this time out can't be got fooled by the head and the kick of Matt Black he starts back toward first base Matt Matlock goes home those base stealers catalog these kinds of things and remembered for the next time down just like the Rudy here we go. Hi bro. I have an idea for a second. Cadillac made a high throw Miller couldn't handle it cleanly our slide has a solid base and he gets a chunk too good of a job. And fortunately that Miller made a good leap and saved the ball from going in that right field corner with all this foul to try. Bleep can't be scarred with that kind of a jump. He's done it before and there is another trade of camp Harris's. He never stops and goes back to first when he's picked up he always keeps going to happen in the Dodger series to Richardson and I against the fabulous Maury Wills. He did the same thing half an hour after the second two outs they are leading one nothing. If your Rudy is this great ball one strike two to Rudy one stage this year Rudy lost 17 pounds with a strep throat. That's what Mandy Moore was talking about his lack of power. Now wanted to. He had an outstanding year last year. He just hit 300 all year round up batting 3 or 5. But interestingly enough money in the Mets scouting report on the right handed hitting power of the sales team. They listed Rudy as the most dangerous hitter from the right side in the clutch situation even over Bando in tennis and Deron Johnson. I think Baltimore had just about the same report according to some of their players. One ball to strike that Bill Rudy half an arrow the second to down Rudy drove it into right field here Katherine Harris coming in with Gore and they played nothing. There would be the reason hurt right there is that he is more apt to go the opposite way with the outside pitch than either Bando or tennis. Charlie Finley and his banner group down here in back of the dugout up waving those banners again that were so dominant during the World Series last year hairstyle Bando a flag left his first time two outs Rudy at first to run then and now face by vandal Rudy make the turn. They fumbled the ball and Rudy comes on the third base will probably be given an error. He charged the ball well of all foul stuff. What he had stopped at his watch Willie Brody get pulled to a stop at second base as the ball bounces off his wrist and then but back to the scouting report. Instinctively he said he can't throw. And he took off the third half comes Ruth Walker. All right Harry Parker is starting a warm up in the Mets bullpen number thirty one Rob Walker the Mets pitching coach out to the mound to talk to Matt lack. This all came after two out nobody on Ken Holtzman doubled in camping areas hit what should have been a ground ball for the third up. But I went through the legs of Felix me on in the right field wholesome scoring half an hour stole second Rudy singled him home and Bando I just think all the center Mays committed an error allowing Rudy to go to third and Yogi Berra wondering about young Matt lack. Now Reggie Jackson ratted out his first time Oakland leading to nothing. Runners on first and third two gone ball one the Jackson Eric Parker quickly getting that right arm warm. Five games against the Reds. The Mets pitcher allowed a total of just eight runs and no more than two in any one game. They scored twice here in the third inning back to hit the high five ball down the left the line just coming on after the sun failed and Harrelson makes a good play crossing a line to grab it to run three hits to air two left at the end of three to nothing Oakland going out of the fourth inning hurt Gowdy money more and Tony go back from Oakland. Willie Mays Leon Jones and John Milner Willie Mays 660 lifetime homerun Henry Aaron 713. Both in this ballpark today Mays single in the first inning rest stop and you're not able to start today. Also that fire for a ball. Ken Holzman now in postseason play in his last 12 innings has allowed no runs in two hits it sends the bouncing ball to handle right on target there's one out and number two and three homerun hitters of all time. Here's the number two man and you just saw the number three man bounce out Commissioner. Boy cue in there and that's Bill Bartholomew. The owner the president of the Braves alongside commissioner to play on John get a hot one hopper back to the box in the first inning and was thrown out two runs three hits for Oakland no runs one hit for the Mets the massive committed to errors Jones again shaded the right center by the outfield a strike. And they leave a big gap in left center form that appears to be the way they're going to playing with left handers on the mound. One strike pitch air that drive it deep and a left center left that open gap up against the wall. It didn't matter. Jones comes in a second with a ringing double and let's face it. Number two for the Mets 0 1 out Jones the second the next batter will be John Miller fly the center at the National Press there the base hit in the center is charged by Jackson Jones is way on Jackson row they let the man go down the second ago for the backstop Jackson tried to throw him out didn't have a chance didn't hit his cut off hand and allowed Miller to get the second on the throw to the plate and that's the tying run at this point Jackson with an exceptionally strong throwing arm violating a cardinal rule of defensive play for now Fielder overthrowing that man and cut off position out to the one Oakland one out for the Mets with John Miller a second year I wrote it about ground it about his first time foul band of them over to have a chat with Ken Holtzman each team now with three hits and the Mets doing what they've been doing all year battling back refusing to give in a ratio Pina and Paul in Blatt are starting to warm up in the Oakland bullpen area they drive into left center Jackson back back back. Their left feedback and blank better feel for the first time that their flag that went down and to I he would have had a sure double. Here he goes back to left center field. Both of them making mistakes inside they've been playing these right handed hitters toward right center field. He got rid of the ball quickly pulling that runner at second base good play Reggie now they go to the box and while Eric Berner to find out about Holtzman who's been slapped hard here by the last three batters we pause briefly for station identification. This is the NBC television network NBC. Hope you're enjoying game one of the world series as you'll watch penis the right hander Lin blast the left hander getting ready in the open bullpen our score Oakland to New York 1. The Mets have two down John Miller of second Don Hahn up took a called third strike his first time Miller 28 with his back to an elite second ball Jones double off the wall and left center Miller drilled a single to center and Brody lined up the Jackson on deck will be Bud Harrelson what ball right. The Don Juan all too you know during the American League Championship Series with Baltimore the execution on the part of the Oakland A's pitchers was almost perfection. They played all the right hitters to right center field as Jackson is doing now but they were hitting the outside corner forcing the hitters to go that way. Now Holzman is coming up in a little bit inside that one down the right the line and no play is a little going for it and we're very happy to see right in back of Commissioner Coon the president of NBC Julian Goodman. Oh he's been a hot baseball fan going to get a good suntan today too as a strike to. Second do unto the Don Juan crowd as 3 and 2 Vina and Lynn black continue to warm up Williams studying Holtzman great to bits reaching a boiling a back brand to cap and Holtzman ninth professional season began in the Cubs organization back in sixty five years three to delivery his ball for and the Mets have runners on first and second to out the next batter. But Harrelson who walked these first time is a switch hitter. Well a bulldog at the plate the bulldog everywhere. I would think of this series boils down to a battle of bullpen. I don't see how a great starting pitchers but if it does the A's might have the edge with more depth in the bullpen. Miller second on a first two hour strike about Harold the A's leading two to one in the fourth inning. They're not holding. As you notice the first base tennis playing off the bag there the ball into the stands and a counterstrike to it. But Harrelson as postman now just pouring a fastball. And again they're playing Harrelson fairly shallow and playing him they hit the right field. The ball is just right. A high fastball makes it 1 and 2. Now you can spot the outfield set up again. Look at Jackson as well over him right center and Alou crowding you right feel like a hole in the left center and Rudy straight away in LA. That's the way they've been playing most of these met right handed batters looking it out through the fastball right by one run to hit two at the end of three and a half. It is two to one Oakland now. Program note from NBC tonight paramedics Gage and de Soto face some tense moments and another dramatic episode of emergency then more suspense the adventure followed by John Connery and Dyan Cannon star on the Anderson face Saturday night of the movie. Right here at NBC and correctly check out the pronunciation. Sean Connery we had a good or Irish one here. Jim O'Gorman here's the way the day's rank. The American League they were first runs for and against third best the fewest runs allowed last of the fourth inning. Jean tennis is up strike one two days ahead two to one. God Matt lack just a bit inside. One at one tennis struck out the first time they'll be followed by Alou and then passing rewrite handers deep into our left tennis benefits of life all in the left field. Play on John. We'll be there and one hour. That's the son Bill here in Oakland. And along about this time a day at the means that at Sun first light up above the top of the stadium. The stands looks dark to the outfielder. He's just a little popped up his first time a man with a crack in his neck and a million moved with that bet. He doesn't like the walk. He's like Manny Sanjaya. You have to really think back one to him two runs three hits locally one run three hits for the Mets and that they've committed two errors. One of the errors cost them a run Garrett and tied a third against the Lou one ball one strike. Now here's the left the whole area looking in the dark. The stands are and then you go up above you run on that bright sky or that drive the ball is going hit the warning path certainly. That ball looked like it was going out and it certainly did a nose dive and it even put a flea on Joe. He was backing up to the wall getting ready to spring and try and rob a little of a homerun. And certainly the ball had topspin and stuck right down. I think also he was bothered by that son we just talked about apparently making a catch before it hit the ground. The wind appears to be blowing out the center field slightly but that win apparently circles around your body and also balls up the playing field is about 90 feet below the ground level. Actually this is a big hole in the ground and the flags that are blowing out are well up above the playing surface wind really is very rarely a factor here. Do down nobody under the age of the last or the fourth Ray possibly fell out his first time. He's ahead two to one ball one some kind of a spin on that ball that left the back you can say a low hits a slicker one ball no strikes and a little bit high ball two or nothing. That lack has struck out a batter he's walked the batter. Bend the curve over two balls and a strike. Ray Flossie was hit by Pete Rose in the collision and the extra hitting game of Cincinnati's all star game one of the famous moments in the Rose came in and ran and went at the way should have lost he was trying to block the play the end of sore shoulder for over a year the two one pitch big hopper the shortstop Harrelson just drove and these were gone one two three at the end of four innings it's Oakland to add new york 1 the free setting announcement was made on behalf of Major League Baseball if you joined us late they scored twice in the third with two down. Ken Holtzman double scarred by neon lit. Captain Harris of ground ball go through his legs half an hour stole second and then Rudy single leave home the Mets scored in the fourth or one out Jones double Miller single men and that's up to the one that lacked leading off with the Mets the bottom of the order in the fifth inning he sacrificed his first time the ball to him yet one forty three lifetime average in the National League of the pitcher two to the week hitting Fisher to nothing he does draw a lot of walks for a pitcher though he looks the ball over well got this ball three he hasn't been near the strike zone most managers of muttered they do it every time and once again we get warm up action Darryl knows now and rally finger that here's Westbrook the pitching coach coming up now they have the two aces of the bullpen getting ready oh the left hander who missed the World Series last year with a broken finger and rally figures who say the deciding game was outstanding against this dramatic current we saw Matt lacking the ballgame against Pitts he bets against Cincinnati probably the best game of his career we saw Holzman and what might have been the best game of his career against Baltimore neither one looks half as sharp as they did in those two ballgames struggling for their control Holzman has walked to thus far and has struck out two and he has a three ball goes right at the John Matlock at Winslow over three and one ran to a foul out of play tomorrow left handers again by blue for the A's Jerry Kuzma for the Mets. Our coverage starts at 4:00 Eastern Daylight Time followed by an NFL football game the ball game is first in the world series the foul ball at delay possibly can come up with Mack hitting you'll see one two three NFL football games tomorrow somewhere wherever your area may be we'll come out of football to game two of the World Series great to pets you walking third walk given enough I can hold any watch the pitcher walk Harrelson the number eight hitter in the 30 walks the pitcher to start the fifth. Wayne Garrett at the top of the order has yet to file pops. So far looking for the bunt Mando sharpen up a third and the whole family throws the first double play hopefully in the first place but then husband with a pretty good fastball. Getting on in on the first dance I'm going to play on there again. If green was coming in. Here it is again for a while I think. Holzman thought of trapping the ball. He was yelled at by his catcher posse that Matt like has gotten off to par. They got him behind him. That's our first double play. The Mets have two down nobody on Felix me on a round of the second round of the third. Kirk you remember last year in the world series a big play in game number five here was when Cincinnati popped the ball up in Raleigh fingers was gonna let it trap and eventually picked it up and threw it away. Surprising that the runner at first base here got that bigger jump when he could see the ball in the air. One very good base running pitchers will do that at times me on again played fairly shallow and toward right often leading two to one in the fifth inning. One at 0 0 7 is while high. I think celebrating that fastball down again to an all out there let's take a look at me on our show you how extreme he chokes up on the bat he's almost halfway up so he could hit it with either end could be there that drive it deep the left they're playing in shallow Rudy's back Rudy lost the ball and his son me on it then the second and coming for third day on they played him shallow and he hit the ball over Rudy. Rudy got up there when he turned around. I'm sure that right son bothered him there in the sun field beyond using out with this kind of power really knew he had to go past the warning track then turned around too soon then had a problem with the son he was all twisted up Jackson was playing at right center field couldn't get over in time to back him up now the time when the third base here is there Rudy and all play a triple for Felix me on curling I guess almost every year. We're not sure. Seeing as Chris Paul play as we did in the playoffs pitching defense Willie Mays. Well you were right money. I think you hit it right off the bat that time on Mays takes ball one may single the left and ground the third me on the third he's the tying run for the New York Mets in the fifth inning with two out Willie mays twenty third professional season is twenty second National League season a strike doing one in one they say that the real good stuff overpowers you now they can't get around on it we'll see what he does with Holtzman I'm a veteran player reaches back and gets that one month one week or one day of glory again that's a high ball to once again Holtzman is up high when that fastball Kurt Mays is one of the few right handed hitters in this Mets lineup that the A's are playing hard left field the last time up they did not they played him in right center. So apparently they've given up a little bit on their game plan. Holtzman hasn't been able to get the ball away from these right handed hitters and holes with almost abandon his curveball two balls in a strike to Willie Mays on a third two down three and one the main play on Jones the on deck batter tag Holtzman for a double off the wall in the fourth you may say fingers in here Mays gets on maize is still in great shape. Look at him one hundred and eighty five pound goes after and filed it back. He doesn't weigh much more than he did when he broke in. Back in 51 first major league hit with a homerun. I recall at Warren's barn and to me on the third made that the high fly ball the right fielder Hazel Salud five times. No one would have missed one hit. No. They left one we're halfway through and at Oakland to New York One. Well a tight one is expected four and a half and he's gotten here in Oakland as the Oakland A's too. The New York Mets won. Now we're gonna turn to play by play over to Mandy Moore who's broadcast the A's games here the last twelve years to the back in the background of analyzing that rerun. Bonnie it's all year. Thank you very much Kurt I want to get everybody Dick Green will lead off for Oakland in the last half of the fifth inning he followed by the pitcher Kenny Holtzman and Bert Campanella. So far New York has one run on four hits. They've made two errors. The A's have two runs on three hits and they played endlessly in the field wrecking ball starts green off. Green walked his first time up in the game and then was thrown out at second base. Dick ordinarily is not that aggressive on the baseband but it looked as if the ball were going to bounce away from Brody and Brody made a very fine play. I think you hit it on the head guard when you talked about the two fine catchers in this series. They are both very quick and getting rid of the ball and they both throw very accurately suddenly we're going to have a pinch hitter for Kenny Holtzman. So he has gone five innings and will be gone. Mike Andrews is on deck and he will be a pinch hitter for Oakland so that will be the designated hitter and the first time its effects will be felt. I've not been in this ballgame green trying to go to right field and even though Holzman got him out there on the top of the Fifth. Evidently Dick Williams didn't like the way he was struggling high with his fastball and he just wanted to get into serious trouble suddenly get shell to proudly come out with fingers two balls two strikes green and a lot of big hits for Oakland this year batting ninth. Most of the season lovin over 40 runs fought off the fastball before the game Deron Johnson was telling us that one of the strengths of Matt Black to him was the fact that he's able to throw not only hard but to keep the hard stuff down low. He said he has very good control from the waist to the knees and that was a good example pitch right. Then he threw the bat as he struck out on a curve ball and it went all the way off third base. The reason that is is that Dick has a sore finger and he throws the bat a lot when he's fool on a pitch change speeds a pitch that's hard to see with the kind of background these hitters have with those white shirts. Great way out in front and now they've called Andrews back money and it'll be angel man. Well batting for Kenny Holtzman rather than Mike Andrews and it is going to be a rally. Fingers. He has just started to warm up again and A's bullpen. He'll come into the sixth inning. I think one difference here Dick Williams does this. He expected that Dick Green would get on. Rally and Andrews is an excellent butler. Angel Manuel is more likely if he hits the ball to drive it for distance. Van Gaal added only to 24 for open this year but he hit three home runs and he played very very little light almost none at all. From July until the last three weeks or two weeks when Billy North was injured he's been saying he wants to be traded doesn't he. Well that's what I read in the papers. He had the centerfield job for Oakland last year but lost it in a tight four way battle in spring training this year. We've got young ballplayer. He came to Oakland in a trade with Pittsburgh for Mudcat grant money and Kurt here is a decision that during the regular season of the American League in the Championship season Williams would not have had to made because of the designated hitter two strikes on Manuel. Kenny Olsen probably saying what am I gonna do. I got one of the hits that Oakland has today Nice play by Birdhouse In the shortstop the Mets he's made one going to his left and one going to his right. Today he has a range of getting a jump on the ball. Meanwhile it hit it all in well he was hit right on the best it looked like by a good pitch and Harrelson got a good quick break off of it because it was in on the batter house and playing the last six weeks of the season and threw the play off the same as he did in 1969 with that great range and he's been instrumental in getting these mets to this world series. Here's Burt Katherine Harris Matt likes curve is low. No money. We're seeing a lot of good shortstop now in a major league two good wins here today. Captain Harrison. You almost have to have one to win in the playoffs. Baltimore of course and Martin Verlander one of the very best and both he and Katherine Harris made four or five throws out of the deep hole at shortstop to get runners at first base. Matt likes gone to a curve and it's a good one right now. He's had it down it's a ball and two strikes on governors can't be had streaks of going to right field but any other straight away he doesn't try to go to write for a week or two and he can hit the ball out of the park. Checks swing foul. Invariably when Katherine Harris starts choking up and going to write his batting average goes up with his speed he should be a better average hitter than 250 which he had this year I had to go to write that one but Matlab grew it by him after five innings the score 2 to 1. Oakland there Mary Berry one of the Oakland A's ball girls and after the fifth inning here of all ballgame. Both she and Debbie said you're the other girl will take refreshments out to the umpires and that having been done we're ready for baseball. Here's Debbie severe Rollie Fingers that a pitcher throws a big breaking slider Holtzman in five innings gave up one run on four hits he walked three and struck out two rally fingers one of the top relief pitchers in baseball this year 170 last days but had 22 saves for the A's with a very fine earned run average of one point nine two and he's facing play on Jones for the count one on one he's extremely rough but right hander with a side arm slider side arms thinking fastball ball to and a whack mustache which became very famous in the world series last year because he was in six games and six of those seven games were decided by one run was fouled off the right field side and end of the seats I got a kick. The Minnesota Vikings are here in town play the 49ers tomorrow Chuck Baughman the brilliant rookie running back. It's quite a baseball fan and they ask him who he thought a win is why I have to root for the A's but I like all the mustaches he said they they started something new and they're colorful and he especially brought up the name Murali fingers first mustache on an athlete of promise in this area was of course on Ben Davidson of the Oakland Raiders but the A's had just about everybody wearing them fingers a little while right now himself he's 3 and 2 on play on Jones who rifle that double to left center field in the fourth inning base it fingers has to give him a little bit when he gets three balls two strikes and Jones sock it right up the middle doesn't matter if I hit the A's five to three and here is Milner who had a base hit in the fourth inning and it knocked in a run think it comes in more overhand that doesn't a money against the left handers he does he throws about three quarter normally but against the left handers as you say he will try to stay up on top more his fastball thinks better when he stays up they constantly remind him of it there it is that good hard thinking fastball but he messed with it one ball and no strikes. Interesting to see if the Mets get in the pinch hitting situation with the right hander on the mound of rusty stock and swing the bat with a little bit tight today during batting practice and yesterday during the workout maybe for a one shot swing and just the threat of his back from the left side might help the Mets fell off it's one ball one strike Oakland leading two to one first game of the world series which will move to New York for three night games Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday there's the breaking ball coming into the left hand batter break on his slider is about as wide a break as my any right hand pitcher in the league Riley was born in Steubenville Ohio but grew up in Cucamonga California. Ray posse calls for that when he has only one play. That's the first. Jones goes to second on the polls swinging but by Millner we talked about the bike catching in his ballgame today. Watch possibly get out from behind that plate removing the mask and get a good clear picture of the ball. No chance for the play at second thought he had a quick release that he did another thing too well he picked the ball up using the mid rake it over and a two hand pickup and the best thing he did of course with the communication with Rollie Fingers telling Riley to stay away. But the Mets now have two shots of tying the ballgame with a hit. Gerard Brody was granted a second in line to center big lead for Jones off second fingers looking back in there to drive it deep to left that's out if it's fair foul ball that one just missed the foul ball that's the area where the ball really carries in this ball park down that line and he got all of that one really hung that pitch inside and he'll do that off the side arm delivery the right hand batters quite a bit. He was lucky getting away with that one hit very hard by Brody hooking away from that foul pole. Fingers got away with a mistake. Rodeo other very bad. He's hit two balls very hard here today. Back upstairs with a fastball at one ball and one strike. Ronnie Reggie Jackson for not having played much center field none this year I guess you said playing a very shallow center field. Billy north the man who he replaced played a very very shallow center field in Paul Blair the two most shallow in the American League ball to rally fingers. He started a few games this year one or two games two games rolling found the fastball. He's been high with every pitch and the man who runs the show on the infield for Oakland. Sal Bando just wanted to say something to rally. Catfish Hunter said. I can hear Bando. The whole ballgame. And he just keeps saying the same thing. Keep it. Keep it down. Get ahead of the hitter. Sal is a tremendous team leader was one of the youngest team captains ever named in the major leagues and he's held that job for five years here in Oakland popped it up camp Kevin Harris with the shades down. Green is going out. Jackson coming in. Who's taking over. Jackson got that ball with a glove up. I don't think he intended to catch that wave and Green have gone a long way out in near collision. Green Not hearing Jackson until the last possible second then getting out of the way that outfielder controlling the entire play waving green off. Good move by Jackson has the slip by the collision good jarred a loose there are two down and here's Donovan score two to one Oakland over the Mets it's the sixth inning in Oakland rallies going almost exclusively with a fastball right now one strike the count on hand Jones the second base giving a thumbs up sign to John two strikes now with that stance Harden is definitely a right field type hitter out of the mess bullpen Harry Parker has gone to work for the third time in the game fingers ahead of the batter they fouled up Tony I think in the first game of World Series you really see particularly with a man in scoring position what the scouting reports say about the batters because the pitcher is gonna go right after batter with the pitch that the scouts say you can get him out on right now. No doubt about that. And of course what you mentioned a while ago Bando yelling out the fingers get ahead of the hitter and he is right now at CFB wasteful also giving a low outside Target again off the side hour fastball Swung on and missed it gets away from Posey on who's going to make it the first base going the third of the players Jones plate umpire says the man did not foul tip the ball. Well we just mentioned that pass he was giving a low outside Target that pitch came high and inside and Ray just couldn't get up there and corral it. He came from the side of CROSSFIRE. I never saw the ball I don't believe he was completely surprised. So was passing pass he was shielded on the swing by a hand did not see the ball the ball going off his glove. It could be a big play and shades of Tommy Hendrick and Mickey on. We had that play in the playoffs with Baltimore. Dick Green struck out on a play with Earl Williams catching and it allowed a runner to keep an inning alive and the A's went out and scored now. Here is a tough switch hitter and but Harrelson hitting right handed today. He walked in the third inning and struck out against Kenny Holtzman possibility with two down here. He might try to Buddy's way on probation if Mandel plays it back but Sal's going to play about even with a bag at third strikeout in a past ball that just took off. Well one rally ordinarily has good control but so far in this game it's very apparent he is not throwing the ball where he wants to fastball strike on the outside punter. The A's outfielder shifted just as strongly around to the left on Harrelson as they had been around to the right when he was batting right handed Joe Rudy very close to the foul line and shallow Jackson in shallow center and there's a hole between center and right and Oakland and Darryl loads up in the bullpen throwing open coach Vern hotshots standing there to protect him. Good thinking fastball strike to interesting money that last year the Oakland club became the first team to go into a world series with only eight pitchers eligible since the Cardinals nineteen forty four against the Browns and Oakland's into this series with just eight men on their pitching staff. Right the designated hitter this year that is the most Oakland has carried all year long Harrelson checks playing fell off into the Oakland dug up. It almost looks as if the hitters are even having more difficulty picking up the ball now. The pitch that hand swung at and Harrelson almost got hit by the last one on a check swing Harrelson really choked up on that bet also struck him out with a blazer on the inside Neurontin a hit to left on the score in the middle of the sixth inning Oakland two New York 1 we've talked many times during this telecast about the poor background for the hitters in this ballpark today. Let's listen to the words of Joe Rudy and what that background looks like Tony. It really is because the background they have here isn't wide enough and they took the tarps down and normally have over the season. People can be sitting there in the light shirts and the left handed pitchers top right hand and vice versa. Here is Joe Rudy starting the sixth inning. He has a two line drives today one caught by the shortstop and the other in the right field for a base hit that knocked him the go ahead run. They were Darrell no predicted yesterday that Rudy would be the star of the World Series last year was funny Curt before the World Series Jean tennis had had only one hit in 17 at bats in the playoffs Slow curve ball gets Rudy swinging and Darrell knows predicted to the press after the final game in Detroit. The man is gonna have a great World Series of Jean tennis and he did so all the players in the press put it on him again this year. All right make a prediction. So he picked Joe Rudy they change the punching pattern on him this time. They're throwing him off speed pitches. Now they have been throwing smoke doing that lack is relying more on his curve ball and a fastball showing him the fastball and using his curve in the strike zone. Here it is really pass the ball and it hits him in a foot and the plate umpire calls him out. Dick Williams is going to argue about this. He doesn't think Rudy was out of the batter's box plate umpire Marty springs that challenge by Rudy and Williams. They don't think they were out of the batter's box when the ball hit him in springs. They didn't ask for any help he call it right now. And I think that's particularly dog and also Joe Rudy. Why don't you appeal and we want to appeal the play and have argued Donna Kelley in a conference with you but he call it on his own. Only Rudy out of the batter's box. Williams and Springsteen have had a thing going all year long. If you want to know the truth they have really had some tough tough argument this year. Catch you I'll get to put out on one out sixth inning and that brings up Sal Bando. There was no question about the ball hitting Joe Rudy. The question was whether or not it hit him while he was in the batter's box Brando's lined out to left field and single. This is the man who had the comeback year for Oakland by the blue dead in a pitching staff from a winning only six last year to 20 this year Bando had a low season last year an average about two thirty four this year he had over 280 right up to 290 knocked in 98 runs at twenty nine home runs it was a tremendous comeback year for Sal Bando out of play into the crowd I don't have any banners here money but those we do are for Willie Mays hard for the hometown Oakland ballclub Mets fans are famous for banners what else and working on another grounder throws him out two out in the sixth and here's Reggie Jackson. Jackson has grounded short and popped up a short time for a guy who missed a couple of weeks or so at the end of the season it's kind of tough to get out of a slump when you see the pitching of Baltimore and New York Mets it's tough to get out of a slump against that kind of pitching if he doesn't get a hit today he's made to get plays and center field contributed there and he could do that he could good fielder base Rutter mind throwing arm Curt he's had the best year defensively and on the bases he's ever had with the A's this year he really put it all together and I think it's a bonafide strong candidate for most valuable player award honors in the American League I wondered how much that bad injury had last year that shelved him in the world series would slow him down this year but evidently not much early in the season he seemed to really be afraid of testing it he almost got no basis at all he didn't run hard but about mid season he started really going and has no fear at all of the hamstring ball snapping again. We look down and say tug McGraw started to warm up now. So both these managers Yogi Berra the Mets and Dick Williams of the A's gone to the races our portable camera looking from behind a home plate area on the first third Bay side Reggie Jackson gets to walk and that brings up Jeanne tenths of a second walk. Matlock has given up on the game. There's Rusty stop not playing today because of an injured shoulder that he made making us sensational in New York and the series against Cincinnati money we might see Rusty in this ballgame Matlock was the first hitter in the 7th for the Mets he really hit tennis on the fist with that one neon throws him out and that's all for Oakland after six innings of play here at the Coliseum in Oakland it is the A's too and the Mets won game two of the World Series here tomorrow then we'll switch to new york And Tuesday night our coverage will start at 8:00 Eastern daylight time with a baseball world of Joe Garagiola and game three of the series scheduled pitchers to right handers. Tom Seaver and Catfish Hunter and now Yogi Berra makes his move. He lists Matt lack. He's going to pitch it. Kenny Boswell Matt lack was tenacious today. He allowed the two runs and the three hits the A's have all in one inning and the third inning and asked that he check the A's and rather overpowered them made some tremendous pitches and that last one the gene tennis with a very fine example of that came in hard and lo and Geno was almost handcuffed with the ball. Here's Boswell at two thirty five. He's at twelve for fifty one as a pinch hitter this year to thirty five mark as a pinch hitter he's from Austin Texas against Raleigh fingers Oh. Baseball is the last two years in the playoff system had both the National and American League playoffs go to four five games. Last year the World Series the Bulls seven fingers Mrs Ball to add unless fingers ballers this and England have the two aces of the bullpen going against each other. Tug McGraw is going to come on and pitch in the last of the seven for the Mets fingers came out earlier today. Then you look for short ending relievers to come on but he's had some fairly long relief job this year got the ball three on the lead off man here's the Boswell came out ready to take a look at fingers and make him throw strikes Darryl knows jumps up again in the open bullpen strike a rush yo yo also joint knows there are two men who were not with the A's in the world series last year. The other both better Paul and Blatt was not here either. Base hit Boswell to start the Mets in the seven Boswell crawled off the bench gets a hit for Matlock and other top of the batting order Gary Ray possibly looking over the A's dugout area. A lot of times Ray has a signal with Dick Williams to tell Dick whether or not a pitcher still has his depth Garrett put it into a double play in the fifth inning is over three today. Buy and drive to agree on what half that should be it ever played agreed to. Katherine Harris and Garrett hit that ball hard. And there's a play that's been apart a little bit of second guessing I think on the part of sportswriters fans I guess as broadcasters. Why not a Bond movie that tying run into scoring position and second base Green can really pick them Kenny money is a good second baseman that was not an easy play there. It was hard hit. And right at him it's the short hop and he fields that ball cleanly about as well as anybody around. On the other hand Tony the ball hit a few feet away. Boswell would have been the third I would imagine that figured into their fingers and not had really good stuff here in the setting so far and let him take a shot at him with a left handed batter Dick Williams about to talk to rally now the pitchers Brandon ever play and the A's have had two so far today behind their pitchers. Here's me on who back Joe Rudy up a little bit beyond the scouting report I believe with that Tripoli hit and the left center in the fifth inning Joe was playing a very shallow and he's deep now now here comes McGraw in toward the net bullpen come in into pitch the last of the seven on me on doesn't give you much of a strike zone. Look at that. He's right on the plate and in a crouch rally Mrs. Lowe. There is one hitter in the American League who bats like this. He chokes the bat up about eight to 10 inches. That's Kenny Suarez vital a catcher for the Texas Rangers. Strike call. We asked Kenny one day this year. Why don't you just get a short or bad if you want to just use the on hands and bat handle are actually in the strike zone two balls in a strike. I played the Mets today and hit the ball harder than the A's and have more of them six hits to three stunned the ball even on out cabin air as he picked it right off ish at times in the seventh inning the Mets don't start leaving it open to new york 1 you've already seen one good defensive play by Buddy Harris and the shortstop. Let's take a look at another one we expect that from these two shortstop to this ballgame almost handcuffed by her camera scooping it right off the ground showing the umpire that it did not out not short hop it here. Money is Tug McGraw now who staggered through the early part of the season and that was brilliant the last two months. He is from Vallejo California born in Martinez. So he is pitching right in his home backyard and it's amazing how many Mets players are playing right here close to home. But this has been a great baseball area. Curt it's produced some of the outstanding major league stars Frank Robinson and Willie star Joe and Vito Pinson. And you could go on and on. This area has produced a lot of big league players let's say piston. Robinson came from the climate high schools right right here high school not very far away from this ballpark McGraw with a screwball. That's his trademark. But he does have a fine fastball and curve ball he can overpower you usually has good control control totally acquired late in the season after that shaky start. He was sensational the last two months of the season he appeared in 60 games winning five and losing six but he had 25 saves learned run average three point eighty six first many faces faces Hello. This is the third a little brother to play with the Oakland A's in the last three years. Strike call and all three of them played with the San Francisco Giants on the other side of the bay no balls two strikes good fastball by him draw a lot of people ask you to compare the three Alou brothers Philippe Matty and hey Suzanne I think they're all three different types of players hitting right on the best White House and at work got a good play on the run he makes difficult plays look easy he gets a good jump he's actually moving before the pitch Yes that's good and state that is leaning with a pitch he got the big watched him get rid of the ball with an accurate throw one of the tops in baseball threw off the right foot but it makes no difference with that kind of momentum going towards first base here's Ray pass to the A's catcher it one hit in the playoffs but it was a big win a two run double off Jim Palmer tried the bunnies way on strike one score two to one last half of the seventh inning on a brilliant sunshiny day in the Bay Area One ball one strike screwball and it came back and hit the inside corner that at one time was definitely a ball but it just kept turning going down and it nailed the inside Gunnar 1 and 2 on Ray here it is again and it's up to the shortstop Harrelson and that today has been a bad place to hit it if you want to get on to a I think it was McGraw who coined the Mets slogan this year you gotta believe Dick Green up for the third time in the game he walked and struck out the match ran the world series with the lowest one lost percentage of any team in the history of the series three games over 500 screwball calls strike receiving no money they didn't have their club till the final six weeks and the fact remains they had to beat a very good club we've had a much better win loss record to get here inside of all we had another team nineteen 14 the Braves game the last place to win the World Championship the Mets fan do it now strike degree in a raise in that world series swept it in for a game George Stallings against Connie Mack McGraw throwing heat up there and with that screwball which is an off speed pitch followed by the fastball or preceded by you can see how the batters have a hard time getting on McGraw back to the screwball and green pops at off first base right in front of the Mets dugout on the warning track you can see how far the runners have to go to try to catch a foul pop here first baseman Milner ran a long ways that time the distance warrior though made a lot of difference for McGraw. He was with a medicine sixty nine but didn't pitch in the series. Two out seventh inning two balls two strikes else in the milliner and three times in a row. That combination worked for the Mets here in the seventh score after seven innings in Oakland is the Ace to the Mets 1 in the dugouts Yogi Berra on the left Dick Williams on the right it's tense here in Oakland we are in the top of the eighth inning. Oakland has a new center fielder Vic Neville Leo Williams has rally fingers on his pitching to Willie Mays and the first pitch is over called Strike one he's got a solid single left in the first inning he's 1 4 3 today there's a big wrecking ball of balls two strikes whenever Leo went into center field Reggie Jackson moved from center over to right that's surprised you did that money that they put clinical heroin Billy by defensive center fielder they're called strike three rally fingers follow that side of wrecking ball with a passing fastball over the outside punter leaving Willie up there Leo has played some outstanding defense for Oakland when he came over here he was strictly being purchased as a pinch hitter for Oakland to shore up the bench but what he has played in the outfield has really been outstanding he has made some great plays in the playoffs you and Tony had that great pickup he made in left center field of a land drive out there the other day won away in the 8 play on Jones a two for three today a double and a single he scored the match run on fingers pitching the Mays and the last hitter out money is the first time we've seen today the fingers of last year's World Series and playoff. You look like he had a good fastball and slider here's the slider Calvin no no Jean fingers definitely locked in right now he has good stuff good rhythm right now and he's had the ball down the best he's looked of any inning he's gone to and two thirds innings of relief allowed to hit struck out three by the way if the A's would hold his lead postman would be the winner he's the pitcher of record he pitched five innings gave up only one run in four hits Miller is one of the few maps who can get the ball out of the park fingers is really going to work on him strike good fastball thrown right over the top and when he throws it like that it sinks down and away from the left hand batter one ball one strike Darryl no starts throwing in the Oakland bullpen again the third or fourth time he's been up they'll want him in case of a left handed batter base hit right field. There was a curve ball and Riley got it up Milner single and that brings up Brody. You see the thing is he was mad at himself. He turned his back to the plate and threw his hands up. Why did I make that pitch. Here comes someone else out to ask that same question. His name is West doc who incidentally was a minor league pitching coach for the Mets the year they won the World Series. So he knows this ballclub pretty well. He took over as the A's pitching coach this year and it wasn't a bad takeover he ended up with 320 game winners and then Catfish Hunter a candidate for the Cy Young Award. No money every time I see a left handed batter up here for the Mets hitting fingers hard to out a man on Brody the batter Oakland leading to the one it's late. We're in the eighth inning. The Mets have hit Oakland today 7 to 3. The A's wired their three hits together in the third inning with a metaphor for the two runs all 1 to the Mets run very much about Milner. You know you see they don't steal very many bases. They stole a few US bases only 27 bases during the year they ranked 11th. The pirates were last in stolen bases only twenty three place hit and run. Will be a different situation against some clubs in late innings of a two to one game. Why ball offers out a no man's land Dick Green is after. So is tennis. Tennis picks it up right in front of green head. Very fine play by Jean. Tennis is converted to become an outstanding first baseman this year. Ordinarily this would be the second baseman baseball ball Green coming over as quickly as he could but with a right handed hitter he had to go a little bit farther. I don't think he could have gotten it had tennis not the score two to one. Oakland an hour program note Don Della wage demands to know about his mother's secret romance on Monday's episode of lots of luck. The comedy continues later on Monday night at the movie Brian Keith and Doris Day star in the hit movie comedy with six you get egg roll right here on NBC s five with egg roll and here we are now in the class of the eighth inning we're waiting to see a rally fingers is going to come out and bat. He's scheduled to lead off in the last of the eight. The defense right now. The difference in this game Felix Meehan who made only nine errors all year let one go through his legs that led to two unearned runs for the A's in the third inning and those two unearned runs have been if the A's leading to the one and fingers gets a hand from the hometown of one fan Curtis at one time in his career as one out of a ballpark he a home run down in Texas last year this will be the second time he has hit this year. And McGraw is starting off with that screwball strike one that draws very sharp mets in the top of the ninth. We'll have the bottom of their batting order. That's a ball one and one you talked about. But Harrelson being that he's had nine chances to day four put out five assists in the world series record is 13 and a ninth inning game. I had a pretty good cut right then one ball two strikes and you go back to 1917 Jordyn Wieber the White Sox who had 13 chances. Harrelson that nine today and handled it perfectly back to the hammer and he missed outside with two balls his rights. The Mets have one run seven hits the A's two runs three hits rallies swinging late fouls and off into the second deck here at the Coliseum money the Mets are supposed to be much of a hitting ballclub but they outscored Cincinnati twenty eight runs the seven by playoff game. They've hit the A's today screwball and did he ever rally filled or not play out in the front. But fingers strikes out there is one way there a lot of pitchers throwing at it. I don't know why it is but it seems that most pitchers who throw it are left handers in the American League. There are a lot of them throwing it now here's Raleigh fingers are hurt arrows to follow fingers McGraw and bend one the other way that's a curve ball coming in to Kevin Harris and it's half of all on Curveball and we talk about this group all all the time they just rotate the risk the opposite way and the left hand a better drawing to a right hand matter the ball will come in and break away down and away the curve ball breaks into the right hander. And it's the change of speed on the pitch that makes it effective about as much as how it breaks it really doesn't usually break all that much anything like a curve ball. But it's the change of fate too. Can't be much of the first baseman too close to the line. He tried to slide under him and a first base umpire and a home base umpire saying Who's gonna call it nobody's call it yet can't be apparently got under the tag and made it to first base. Yogi Berra that dog ate on it. Are you gonna tell the first base umpire an hour I slid under the tag. It looked like and the question was did he go out of the base running back. Or did he stay in it. Well that's a typical bird Katherine Harris. He was beaten badly 30 feet from the bag and just slid right under the first baseman. Here are a couple different angles on this other Milner. He's still in the three foot Lane and Miller appeared to miss him as he shot right by. Watch him go by as he just accelerates there the slide is under. And Miller must've had a target on the back. That's the angle usually usually we see that they appear to miss him and Katherine Harris is safer at first. Here's another angle now as Miller reached for him it came down. He definitely missed a fantastic play by Katherine Harris. And as it turns out some real heads up umpiring Donna tell he waited until he called that play until he saw what Springsteen said about whether or not he ran out of the baseline line here's your Eddie McGraw drives Katherine Harris back in court what kind of mood must draw him. Pretty fair Katherine Harris gets a hit on that back by the way. Here's a good movie he took his foot off the river and through side arm he never did drop down to the stretch position have an Arab stole second and the third one out the eighth leading to the one another run with the pick for them. He picked the throw but didn't throw and it was not a bug because he had his foot off the rubber so can't be seen both of McGraw's moves now Rudy could hit behind that runner. Candy money good right field hitter and a good power hitter to the opposite way. Happy with big back end of first that doesn't a man like Katherine Harris put that extra heat on the pitcher I've got to think about keeping him close to play this crowd has been kind of quiet up until Katherine Harris gets he turns the crowd on when he gets up there they call him the road runner here in Oakland and they flash beep beep signs a lot of time when he's on Rudy got a fastball then and that's one reason Rudy likes batting second behind Kevin Harris he does get a lot more fastball swing it because that pitcher wants the catcher to get the ball in a hurry during the season Curt delay North was the A's leadoff man there most of the year and Captain Harris batted second Rudy throws out Joe Rudy and the A's are playing for one more here with one out a story that good defense is catches here really got out there in a hurry ball I'm stuck on the bed. Rudy's that time it was so soft. Now with a left handed batter coming up next. Sal Bando batting here. Yogi Berra is going out of the dugout to talk as to whether the pitcher Bando which leads you to believe that maybe Joe really was batting on his running on his own there could have been Reggie Jackson schedule up behind Bando days ahead two to one and the last of the eighth. You've met fans looking to the ninth Don Juan but Harrelson McGraw. The bottom of the Order of the schedule batters find out in a hurry. If Brody stands up and holds it hand out they're going to walk in. You think he's used the world series competition. I don't think there's any question why he didn't seem to be too nervous today before the game. They're going gonna walk Mando while this is presented baseball because Sal Bando has been the hardest hit are open his head. He and Joe ready for the last get ready for two weeks and Bando for a month. However the left hander McGraw to pitch to the left hand batting Jackson though they're bringing up the leading home run hitter in the American League. They're bringing up a man who hits for a higher average against right handed and left handers by far back. That's going to be do some time. He was three for twenty one in a playoff. He'd go for two today but he's up against a rough left and the right and Curt. Don't be surprised to see Jackson try to go to left field here. He will do that with a man in scoring position a lot of times. And they're playing in deep out there in straight away all three outfielders in a normal position. Ground ball right at the second baseman a percentage play word beyond throws Jackson out as he did try to pull the ball in great innings of play and open the score. The A's to the March 1 the preceding announcement was made on behalf of Major League Baseball. Pinch hitter now for the Mets in the top of the ninth inning at Crane Poole who had an outstanding playoff series for the Mets he'll go against rally fingers who came on in relief of Ken Holtzman Hoffman pitched the first five innings and very effectively allowing only four hits and one run out on the Oakland bullpen the backup crew of Darrell nose and her rushing opinion the Mets have three outs left they trail by a one run Crane Poole played in 100 games for the Mets this year. At one home run had up to 39 batting average and here we go in the nine lane drive right to camp. And I tell you. The A's have had a lot of land drives hit right at him today. The myth of hit and tough luck it hit the ball harder than the A's all afternoon. By the way they're down to just two left handed hitters. Now one may not be available Rusty stop the other one is Martinez and Hodges three Ozzie and Bando having a little conference. But Harrelson is due to bad and we're going to have a pinch hitter as they stop down there Rusty stops out also Ron Hodges. I believe it'll be Hodges to bat first or Harrelson and that will be it. Whether left handers the less Martinez comes up me the switch hitter I just played in 45 games for the Mets this year at thirty three base hits one home run 18 runs batted in they're going over the scouting report again right here. Just checking our scorecards in the seven. Garrett had a wicked shot into a double play then me on line this yard here in the ninth frame Poole is laying this short Rodi line to center in the fourth someday they drop in other days you hit him right at somebody Ryan Hodges the batter now for the Mets he's a catcher Franklin County Virginia fingers started him off with a fastball inside and low one ball no strikes low Mets are gonna have one last shot at it with their number one man rush these derbies left on day ball to and depending on what rally fingers can do with Hodges might depend upon what Rusty style does strike on the outside corner Here's a look from our portable camera rolling around right behind home plate now you see style and over his shoulder the batter and Ray possibly giving the sign for this pitch with a 2 1 con 0 three fingers Kurt you remember the seventh game of the world series last year. A tense moment in the ninth inning rally hit a batter. Darryl Cheney they keep that suspense going and allowed Pete Rose come up and bat one more time for Cincinnati. But then he got him out right after Rudy is at three balls and one strike on Hodges ball poor he walked him in that's going to bring up Rusty. And if he could hit one out it would be the ball game lead for the New York Mets and they're going to have a runner Danny Martinez Kenny Martinez is going to run for Hodges That's the first man fingers that walked in the game stop banning water. Williams taking his barrel on normally might bring a left hander but he's probably. Well here he is wondering how bad staff shoulder is that he was waiting to make sure that stop was announced to the bench where he is now. This is the second trip to the mound by any representative out of the dugout in this inning so rally fingers is automatically out. This rule was not in book for the World Series last year but it is for this one. Now there is a break in the action here in Oakland. The scores the A's to the match 1 you saw Dick Williams move to the home plate umpire did it was announced at the end the game stop. Yes he's brought in Darryl no and now Yogi Berra removes stop and he's going to go with the right hand a pinch hitter. Jim Beecham Daryl knows has never pitched in a world series game last year right before the American League championship playoff series. Darrell while batting hit a ball of left field and as he watched it fall in the left field he started running to first base and fell down and broke his thumb on his pitching in the score. Here is the A's too and the Mets won. Jim Beecham is the batter and the attendance here today forty six thousand twenty one big jump on the season hitting to seventy nine for the Mets as a pinch hitter in nine hits and thirty four at bats he's from Grove Oklahoma and Darryl knows this situation might have been right in the hole Martinez close as well as the pitch strike gone nose buried in 52 games for Oakland this year five of the times as a starter won six lost eight had nine saves one ball one strike knows doesn't throw a screw ball as such but he throws a turnover fastball it throws it hard and that's a double play pitch to right handed batters from behind first base you can see what it looks like to see Darrell knows there his pick up move which is one of the best in the American League over I think after he got the ball he wanted to throw it he was off balance and he was afraid to throw it away then he made another shot at first watching. Green has been very steady today. He's a short man but he had perfect timing on that. He handled the double play ball in the seventh off the bat a guard that was a wicked shot doing Carli Finley the owner of the A's the loan. All of the sole owner of the team now knows his club is one out away from capture him. Game 1. Boy we have seen some plays by the infielders here today and that was one of the best. Here now is Wayne Garrett. 0 4 for today's hit in a two double plays NBC statistician Allan Roth and our production stage manager Jim Gorman today our thanks to them for their great help this car. Here we are. You're in the ninth inning two down and the game is slowed down by this bank coming off of personal attention. Same thing happened here the other day curt with Catfish Hunter pitching that sensational game in the ninth inning he had his concentration zeroed in on the Baltimore players and all of a sudden fans started climbing on top of the walls in the outfield and it really broke his concentration and you have to recycle to get going again. So now they're all over we'll work on Garrett Martinez the runner at first foul ball out of play. Garrett had a pretty good cut at that one and he had some power nose got that ball higher than he wanted to get it to Garrett to the wide open leading they have led since the third inning of the game. If if they get out of this one they'll be breathing big sigh of relief down here in their locker room Tony Kubiak is on the field he'll be interviewing one of the players after the game five. All right Bill this could be at Reggie Jackson coming in. He's there. He got and I'd have to say it with defense or the A's today there by Felix me on cost and that's the ball game in the third inning. It made only nine errors all year a lot of ground ball go through his legs off the bat a Katherine Harris that should have been a third out run came in a score then Rudy single and both A's runs were earned as they went it two to one. We'll be back. Got it. Go back. I'll be interviewing some of the stars. We'll have more of a recap right after this. All right let's quickly get down to Tony Kovak with me with the manager of the Oakland A's. There's still a world champion winner of this first ballgame being congratulated by Charlie Billy Charlie. Congratulations you've got another one under your belt. Good to see you looking so good. Thank you very much. You got a good man you're not a dick yet to make a decision in this ballgame you didn't have many decisions like it all year long a two to one ballgame Holzman no doesn't need here in the world series you took him out. Well I can hit the double and had a run hard and played hard in the second and then the bowling got threw me on the next Hillary had a run real hard on the way home and of course we got another run at Camp campy steal second and Rudy gets a base hit. It took a little steam out. He went eleven innings four days ago he only had three days rest and prior to that he had missed. We let him bypass one turn because he had thrown more innings this year Tony than he had all year. In his previous career in one year so he was a little tired. He got to victory a well-deserved victory for him a great relief job by rally fingers and go No. So we're just quite pleased to get off on the right foot. You know it's difficult from where we are. Dick being so far away from home plate but it did not appear even though it was a low scoring ballgame that the pitches were particularly sharp until McGraw came in the rally seem to have a good ending. Well I'll tell you Mr. Matlock even though he got the loss on it both runs where on earth he's very very tough. I was proud of all three of my pitchers Mr. McGraw. I caught his act before I think there's gonna be a low scoring series. I'd be surprised if it wasn't I think games would be like this. And anything can happen. We'll probably be back here next Sunday also. Did you find anything out about the Mets in today's ballgame that you didn't know before. No not really because we know they battle and they'll come back even harder tomorrow. This is why they wonder division I think they're a super team with the super manager and it's our privilege to be playing. Yes I'm in the world series. I'm taking to tomorrow's ballgame by the blue. What about.
