from Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego California NBC Sports presents the 1984 World Series between the Detroit Tigers and the San Diego Padres this was Sunday bedlam in this city by the border San Diego miracle comeback against the Chicago Cubs that put the Padres into the series against the Detroit Tigers hi I'm Ben Spelling it wasn't always that way wasn't always a baseball game played before 58,000 people with lights atop the stadiums with television cameras and media from all across the country and around the world interested in the outcome of the World Series no it was not that way at all in the beginning and for any good story there's always a beginning you have to go back the horse-and-buggy day when there was a game but it was a small game known to only a few in fact you have to go all the way back to 1903 it was late September and as the season turned a nation's thoughts turned to baseball continues ears Beaneaters from Boston wouldn't had a chance against our champs anyway I got a prayer Bonnie go right to move for its name its ripeness sir I don't think they're really good would be the National chip we're only three years old they've been around for quarterback I still think our boys compete and of course it could be marvelous for both teams with the tickets will be set at 50 cents and the visiting club could be given a quarter on every ticket sold can't we stop all this constant baseball talk this is in baseball talk my dear this is money talk you guys are an embossing bums right I hear that sigh young fella is about the best vegetarian [Music] here you might be starting my most important thing is to beat those guys we'll get them stopped what are you going to call these games anyway I asked the national championship of course excuse me mister drivers it's more than that a series of games will determine the best baseball team in the world guys no no no like it took me eight days but the upstart Boston Puritans beats the established Pittsburgh Pirates in 1903 and the World Series was born for 81 years the series has determined where the championship flag will fly and now this American tradition continues [Music] Barney Dreyfuss the owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates siyoung the name who has tumbled down the corridors of time all the way to the present the names like Alan Trammell and Jack Morris and names like mark Thurmond and goose Gossage right now here's Bob Costas all right bid in the twilight of Jack Murphy Stadium the Padres will go with left-hander mark Thurmond 14 and 8 for the year the loser of game 2 in the playoffs against the Cubs the Tigers counter with right-hander Jack Morris 19 and 11 for the season the game one winner in the playoffs at Kansas City the Padres all told will use for starters the Tigers will stick with a three-man rotation Morris p3 and Wilcox now Detroit won 104 games this year but even more impressively in games started by their big three they were 74 and 31 and the series will abound with contrast the Padres have never been in a World Series and they had to fight back in the playoffs the Tigers of course are rich in World Series tradition having first appeared in the Fall Classic in 1907 and ran away with their division and split Kansas City in the playoffs second baseman Lou Whitaker leads it off against the Padres mark Thurmond Vince Kelly and Joe Garagiola Colin I Drive into left-center field Bobby back it's over his hand he's on the track and it's gonna bounce against the wall Whitaker the second base standing with a long boy they go after you right away over his head to face head and these Tigers are well they're doing what they did to get here Sparky was saying Whitaker and Trammell are exceptional hitters well Whitaker's doubled and now he has Trammell lined into left field that's a base hit Whitaker is 2/3 and Graham is sending him in the throat of the plate he's in and it is one nothing to Troy a holding at first his panel and the Tigers have done it again they scored in the first inning we look at the replay 9dr left-field grandmas doesn't hesitate Whitacre better than average speed martinez's throw cut off no chance in the world Kurt Gibson was due up next and it looked like a big first inning was in the offing but then Thurman helped himself out and there goes the run of the throw to Garvey Garvey down to Templeton's again so the Tigers settle for one run on the first in Sparky Anderson ends his hopes on his top right-hander Jack Morris the Tigers are a heavy favorite in the series but after their victory over the Cubs anything seems possible for the Padres and sure enough when Steve Garvey came to bat in the bottom of the first the magic was still working one and all the counter Garvey to down in the first inning Tigers 1 Padres nothing fastball lined or right that's a base next up the veteran third baseman Greg Nettles and light Garvey he's no stranger to World Series competition wine in Alexa that's a face Terry Kennedy Kennedy batted 240 with 14 home runs during the regular season line drive down the right-field line and going into the bullpen guarding here and he scores one San Diego right here in the bottom of the first inning of the first game it appeared as if the Padres playoff momentum might extend right on through the World Series San Diego didn't score again in the first inning but they continued to place sparkling baseball moves ahead to the top half of the second Darrell Evans the batter for Detroit hit to the right away ins smothers it gets up after to the Padres let it to to one that in the third the San Diego crowd began to get on Morris and he looked a little shaky when he faced Alan Wiggins to open the inning drop the middle behind the bag is knock it down thank you next up was Tony Gwynn led the major leagues and hitting in 1984 Oh for the devil's and Kennedy coming up two on nobody out and garbage would you have a mentor like Barbie sacrifice knowing that he's hittin 225 if I'm managing yet and the runners go on a bouncer of the right side they get a tactical one and I get the DoublePlay and even with starting to run as they were able to get it and of course that's union record Whittaker does a good job Quinn goes out of the baseline you didn't have to make the tag and you can almost see Whittaker Sam hey nice call up Williams gamble but Garvey the MVP of the playoffs would come through when nettles followed with a walk the double play loomed even larger the Padres had runners at first and third but now with two outs Morris still faced danger though Terry Kennedy was the batter and he had touched Jack for a double back in the first Wiggins a third nettles at first and not holding him - out - one - and that's sliced to left-center but lemon got a jump he's there too so Morris survived without giving up a run neither team scored on the fourth and the Tigers came to bottom of fifth trailing 2-1 and with two out when Lance Parrish stepped in shot inside third and down the line nettles never had a chance the ball wedging underneath the bunting and so into second base with the ball dead goes perished with a ground rule double watch Parrish he really gets around on that ball opens up and it's by middle before he knows what hit him there's Larry Herndon he had an infield single hit into a force play at third Riaan one to Herndon try to pick up Parrish and get the Tigers even drive to right field when going back to the track at the wall and there's the horn run we are done so the Tigers in five three two two and I guess sermon the old story he fits the one more batter too many three balls and one strike to count and that's is it to nothing the two balls in one strike three and one those are the crippled shooting counts and that's the one that gets you in trouble you can look for a pitch and get your whack and that's what Hernan did or you got those arms out there he really snapped after Herndon who had 20 home runs last year and only seven issue has come up with a big one tonight and Herndon's blast not thurmond from the mound he was replaced by Andy Hawkins Hawkins got the Padres out of the fifth and then to start the sixth inning Chet lemon the fleet Tiger centerfielder led it off lemon delivered a single to left the ball cut off by Carmelo Martinez before it could reach the wall now Sparky Anderson with a 3-2 lead looked to put the Padres away as lemon took a big lead off first Darrell Evans settled into the batter's box and that's are they any quarterback now as the Padres came to bat in the bottom of the sixth they were still trailing three two has nettles let alone keen Janet's hit off the end of the bat and it's a base hit to center so Mars makes a great pitch nettles is way out and get ahead Terry Kennedy was next it's three to Detroit bottom of the sink and if lined in the center patient medals to second and just hit get there Bobby Brown followed and twice failed a sacrifice with two strikes he tried to hit away [Applause] got him perfect fastball about at the knees on the outside part Brown never did get a good swing in the 6th inning Salazar second Kennedy got him and look at the concentration this is put behind your back ball fact and so it's Gary Hamilton who wears number one on his back and he's on the spot right now Jack Paar's striking out Brown and Martinez is one pitch away from striking out the side and he strikes him out away [Applause] with that rally having been fouled up the Padres still trailed 3-2 as Bevacqua let off the last half of the seventh fastball is inside first and down the line ran for two kept in chasing they're waving well a girl acasio that Donaghy's shuffle he stumbled as he rounded second base it maybe he hasn't been playing but he stumbled as he rounded second base and what a play that was right there that's where he lost it and that's where he lost the play Virgil says get down but basic baseball hitting the relay man made to play here's the play that throw by Whitaker hitting the cutoff man and that made it basic baseball that was the last real chance dick Williams that his Padres had in Game one Morris was in trouble several times but he was still there at the finish little ground ball to first this ought to do it Bergman to the bag and the lights go out on Game one in San Diego Jack Morris goes all away retires the last six in a row he was threatened the Padres Hanuman the ropes and he had the ability to get off the ropes and they couldn't put him away and the game one final the Tigers three the Padres two game to a Jack Murphy Stadium on a perfect night for baseball in San Diego but hardly a perfect night for Padre starter ed witson Lou Whitaker stepped in to lead off the top of the first here we go and Game two line into left-center field and Whitaker is at it again the ball cut off by Martinez it gets it back in Alan Wiggins the Louetta ker singles and that's the keynote for Detroit they roar early they have scored in the first inning three of the four postseason games next batter Alan Trammell the Whitaker taking his lead held on by Garvey Trammell 2 for 5 last night he singled home Whitaker he also stole a base Whitaker goes Hitler on base hit to left field and what if it keeps on going too the throw is not in time travel holding at first and the Tigers are in business so first and third nobody out and as hammered to right centerfield add two faces on his way to third is traveled a long single by Gibson and for the fourth time in five postseason games the Tigers have taken a bite out of the opponent and you don't have to be a genius to realize that every guy's walked up there jumped on the first pitch so cleanup man Lance Parrish let the first pitch go by here goes Gibson off-speed pitch he stole it without a play off-speed a fly ball down the left-field line curling foul voltron his tag in the bullpen it's caught by Martinez and make it so travel and Gibson 2/3 then it is tooted up in Detroit and now it's Darrell Evans turn change a little looper temple and going out and can't get it in comes Gibson and before the chairs are worn its fleet of nothing Detroit as Dick Williams considered when the pool Whitson Johnny Grubb stepped in there goes Evans and a hit and run ground ball in the hole and it's going to go into left field so Evans will go to third and a hit parade continues so Evans was going and grow found a hole that was all Williams needed to see he yanked whitson and in came Andy Hawkins who had worked in Game one giving up just one hit in two and two-thirds innings as for witson he left trailing three nothing after throwing just 11 pitches a 14 game winner during the regular season and now this shut the door on the Tigers and dan Petry took a three nothing lead to the mound of the last of the first Alan Wiggins led off [Applause] only Gwynn was next he goes and at ball four [Applause] I think anybody ask the daughter for Padres are in business at forty medals is still a long-haul threat when he got home to this one I fly ball into shallow left coming up is Rupert Jones tagging his Wiggin and on the throw to the plate going to serve us good throw to glue but I'm getting rid of it watch the play at the plate Harry's thinks he has he block with right there goes his foot the Padres settled for one in the first but still hope had been reborn among the fans of Jack Murphy Stadium and the Hulk and shut the Tigers down through the fourth and they're trying to fill in San Diego in the bottom of the fourth trailing 3-1 the Padres let it off with Kurt Bevacqua who stumbled on the base pads have been such a pivotal play in Game one as a pace head into left field now it's shortstop Gary Templeton at the plate for San Diego [Applause] ground ball into right here the bakla takes a look and keeps on going gibson throw is cut along [Applause] at the crack of the bat Bevacqua headed for third determined not to repeat his game one misadventure he made sure is let the wheels come flying off and he goes into a half-gainer he looks like Greg Louganis here now Bobby Brown comes up off speed it's slowly to short will shuttle to Whittaker and that's all is the lot was like three to Detroit and the San Diego fans since the team is back in the ball game trying to keep it close 24 year old Andy Hawkins turns in a marvelous performance on the mound Hawkins had been in and out all year long working both as a starter and out of the bullpen but he pitched shutout ball against Detroit for the second day in a row fastball 13 in a row [Applause] now with one away in the last half of the fifth and the score 3-2 Tigers Greg Nettles is the batter for the Padres [Applause] and again the five bass ball one and everybody safe no stopping at second I mean it eats them up if you're looking for a major-league bad hop if it stays out double play and it took about a 90 calorie bite right out of Whittaker two on one out designated hitter Creek Bevacqua to play he had only 200 with just one home run during the regular season [Applause] hi flyball failback those jobs away dramatic three-run home run by Kurt Bevacqua has turned it around and Sparky knows full well that the Padres are a very tough love fearing that Hawkins might be tired after pitching two days in a row Williams replaces him with Craig Lefferts in the 7th Lefferts was just as effective as Hawkins [Applause] brave leopards has struck out [Applause] I am better two down ninth-inning [Applause] haha padres it will be Wickham's so game two was a turnaround the final the Padres five in the Tigers three evening the series at one as they head for Detroit the Padres were kind enough to allow our cameras and microphones into their dugout so ease drop along with us the sights and sounds of Game two games who ended early for a shell shot did Whitson knock from the mound by three tiger runs on the top of the first but with nine turns at bat left dick williams Padres had only begun the plot and scheme bottom of the first Wiggins aboard Gwynn brasil' off first and second nobody out and the tying run comes to the plate in the person of Steve Garvey he's been swinging a hot postseason bat now maybe Steve can drop a bunt down here never can tell what will happen here now Garvey's a good butter but usually for a hit he was credited with only one sacrifice ball all season he said if you want to lay one down earth you only one down you're not playing a fiver the third baseman Darrell Evans playing deep Williams thinks Garvey might be able to beat one out but Steve's bunt goes to the right side pitcher dan Petry throws him out a successful sacrifice with Wiggins moving to third and Gwynn to second but it's not exactly what Williams had in mind fiber but I want it I want him to cry 105 go under affrighted Rockland he's way back yeah in the dugout Garvey is congratulated by teammates and questioned by a skipper see we've got to push it out that way okay so he's way back occured a flow man a guy third good try we moved to uplift receive to Blinn we're on our way instead the Padres settle for one on a great metal sacrifice fly but in the fourth they threaten again Kurt Bevacqua board with one of his three base hits and Gary Templeton at the plate facing Tiger right handed dan Petry Templeton finds the hole on the right side and Bevacqua heads for third unlike Game one he makes it this time with a headlong dive but he comes up hurting a bit from fighting in third-base coach Ozzie Virgil that he might have pulled a muscle well you wrecked your now a little bit mature for you all right it's gone saying as far as we all play it over after all this is the World Series in a journeyman like Bevacqua had no intention of leaving Milano he scored on a groundout to make it 3-2 Detroit and then in the fifth greater glory awaited Gilligan first bright man right spot Oh Maddy there as if William said the white man in the white spot now the scene shifts to Detroit for Game three from the modern architecture of Jack Murphy Stadium to tradition filled Tiger Stadium here Detroit's fans are expected to pump the Tigers up but Milt Wilcox runs into some trouble in the top half of the first leadoff man Alan Wiggins crosses up the tiger defense which was drawn in to prevent a bunt hit there over third and down the line over to get it is Herndon and he doesn't come up with it and in the second base goes Alan Wiggins dick Williams open you see his ball club get out in front for the first time Wilcox retired the next two before walking Greg Nettles now it's Terry Kennedy up two on two out and the Padres have a chance to break in front Wiggins and nettles taking their lead off speed roll down to Whitaker nice easy hop and that's that Roger a starter Tim Waller blanked the Tigers in the first and Wilcox did the same to the Padres in the top half of the second now bottom half of inning number two bat-ball bangs in the right field the lemon it's a base hit against the left-hander and the batter is Dale Evans one ball one sight in the dirt [Music] [Applause] that in Canada kicks it off and good one I brought it to Center the coffee brown is right there lemon tagging Brown for the cat lemon to serve that brings up third baseman Marty Castillo the number nine batter in the tiger lineup marquise Ana's been watching lemon come down the line from third one and two fastball [Applause] under the heading of unlikely heroes popping mr. Slovak WA and number two becomes Marty Castillo lemon was the third he's watching it and he sees it's gone apparently shaken by the homerun Waller proceeds to walk Lou Whitaker [Applause] [Music] I think this message down towards the close on hello is ho enthralling and here is Alan Flamel lime Drive play temple intro it gets away from [Music] Whitaker was trying to make it but by sliding the offense Kennedy the ball gets time and it could have been another face for travelers it gets by far enough the flower was backing it up the batter is Kirk Gibson and there's ball four so with Lollar in very hot water lamps perish being the bat with two on and a chance to break the game wide open early in one de paris Larry Herndon on deck three nothing destroyed in the second inning ground balls smothered by metal the faces all over [Applause] and here's some stick one in and you come for liquor Greg Booker is the third gift in a second and there's land perish at first with the infield single 3-nothing Tigers trying to tear it wide open [Applause] and Dick Williams watching his ballclub get deeper and deeper into trouble now with the score of four to nothing Booker faced barbaro garbey with the bases still loaded mr. Brown and the Tigers get four and leave three and chase wallet into two for nothing Detroit leading off the third for the Padres Alan Wiggins two balls in one strike any lines at the center shrinking for a patient Allen Williams is two for two a double and a single Tony Gwynn Quinn led the league hitting 350 one one and one and Wiggins goes and the ball is hit into right-center for a base hit Wiggins will keep on going and hits and wisely close it in to Trammell and the Padres come battling back well here's Garvey trying to get the Padres back in the game first and third nobody out fastball hit down a Whittaker goes to trammel the first Garcia Wiggins scores and in his florida one deploy he had a little bit of trouble getting the fall out of his glove whitaker did win went down and there you see him and Garvey look to me look like defeated the Wilcox really fighting his way out of the spot first and third nobody out and gets Garvey on a force nettles to foul out and here's Kennedy ground ball to the right side to wit it'd have been a big inning the Padres are fortunate to get one the bottom of the third was a San Diego nightmare Booker got two outs but gave up two walks and now faced Alan Trammell and here's panel with a three-year-old count and he was and what yes up to that point of the series the Padres relief pitchers have been close to perfect but Booker's wildness forced Williams to go to his bullpen for Greg Harris the first batter Harris faced was Kirk Gibson everybody moves up 90 feet the ball hit Gibson and the bases remain the fish curve has shifted I believe I'm a frat party I said Gibson picks up an RBI and here is I'm fighting brown handle so the Tigers wind up with one and leave three without getting a base hit is five one deployed at the end now leading off the fourth inning for San Diego is the hot hitting D H Kurt Bevacqua his home on made him a hero Game two our ground ball base hit lavalla Wilcox struck out Carmelo Martinez and then faced Gary Templeton little number up launcher to play barehanded by Castillo no throw and wisely made and your first and second Wow and Bobby Brown about it doing to the brown chopper to third right at the bag knock down like a ceiling fall scramble [Applause] trying to pull almost have himself a sisters can feel really fat just barely God again the Padres came up empty it was a long night figuratively for San Diego and a long night literally for everybody it took two hours and 15 minutes just to play the first five innings in the seventh Bill Scherrer replaced the tiring Milt Wilcox for the Tigers and had some problems off his glove and that's going to take Whitaker out of the play yes and aboard is Glenn with a base hit Steve Garvey just 1 for 10 in the series at this point is next to lap Herndon coming over and it's off his glove winners going to keep on going to 3rd and he's in there in the second goal RB and the Padres are in business goes second and third and one out nettles and Kennedy both left hand who's coming up against here I fly ball it's deep enough to get win home tagging up his gone lemon for the cash and they're both trying to move over and die just made why well that's cut it close very close down was first who was Castillo at his hands on the jump like Egypt well no play well as a playful Willy Hernandez all right he comes in with a runner at third and two out five to two in favor of Detroit Hernandez faces Terry Kennedy who had hit Willie well when the pitcher was in the National League drive to center lemon was shallow it's over his head and it's behind you [Applause] Leiter's tong and tobacco in cheek Sparky would describe lemons cash as routine finally two outs of a ninth and Garvey represents the Padres last hope see here a Tigers a little he's ass so Willie Hernandez nails down the victory for Milt Wilcox the final the Tigers 5 the Padres 2 if you've been with us through any of the first 3 game you've seen our look back at the first World Series played in 1903 now here's a kaleidoscopic view of some of what's happened since then [Music] all right I don't know about you but I blinked and miss the 1940s now back to the present game for the series Tigers in front two games to one and Tiger Stadium is rocking with enthusiasm as Detroit sends its ace right-handed Jack Morris to the loud Laura Smith the distance to beat the Padres in the opener and he got right down to business in Game four he picked up two quick outs and then faced Steve garbage down bases at the first inning just the start of the ball game chopper over the mound what if your back is [Applause] so Morris retired the Padres one two three Lou Whitaker let off to the Tigers in the bottom half and he had begun the scoring in each of the first three games of the series Padres pitcher Eric Chow was 15 and 9 during the regular season but hit hard by the Cubs in the playoffs and his troubles continued and there's a ground ball to Wiggins off-balance throw bulls driving the Whitacre aboard on a break and Alan Trammell about it I Drive in the deep left field my penis away back [Applause] and again the Tigers take a bite out of you in the first inning that was it for the Tigers in the first but dick Williams must have been wondering what you have to do to stop the Tigers early in the second the Padres Terry Kennedy stepped up against Morris one to counter Kennedy a drive to right field and Gibson just turns and watches it go upstairs so Kennedy and the Padres that they have done throughout this series they come back Morris had allowed 20 home runs this year and 14 of them here at Tiger Stadium and it is two to one destroy it looks like a loaf wrecking ball that Kennedy would they will hit the upper tech and look at that fence they need somebody to pick him up neither team scored on its next at-bat and it was the Tigers turn again in the bottom of the third here in the third inning with one out breaking ball lined to right base hit and Gwynn flips and Whitaker on his way to second he will make it and Nevada trammel and of course Alan hit one out Alan's having a big series breaking ball hit the deep left field back those Martinez goodbye [Applause] [Applause] want him to take a question crawl here he come [Applause] meanwhile Morrison allowed the Padres only three hits through five innings of work in the last half of the fifth Whitacre again led off for the Tigers and on deck Alan Trammell as Whitaker is aboard for the third time and he's going for two so as he did throughout the series and in fact throughout the season Whitakers set the stage for Tremmel who homered in each of his first two appearances against starter Eric Chou [Applause] this time Alan paces left-handed reliever Dave drew Becky [Applause] line in the left for only a single and here comes Whittaker and any holds up and Martinez closed it in a very cautious promise and Whitaker with nobody out and inning deciding not to draw throw for my kids so now there were two men on and it was up to Kirk Gibson to bring them in he doesn't go and down goes Gibson and I guess the thinking was he's so tough to double up because of his feet why gamble what he's hot but you got to figure to where they've been running thinking of Kennedy's going back there that he'd stay away from it but hey all kinds of little Wars going on so thoroughly frustrated and angry Kirk Gibson goes snarling back into the dugout and the next batter is Lance Parrish doing one the land pirates busted bat and a one-hopper and they can go to the plate and Kennedy tagged out a sliding Whitaker who got it up around the jaw watch this now watch the bat look at the ball coming in the bat he doesn't know what to do he sucking both you don't think that's distracting and Whitaker looking back to see what's happening and he's an easy out and as for Morris well he just kept rolling along seventh inning the batter lavaca wa Oh and another one to get him looking he set up a balloon to strike him out first teen in a row retired by Jack Mars and at the end of six and a half the Tigers have the Padres by the neck four to one it's the ninth but as the Padres contemplate the prospect of going down three games to one on foot in Tiger fans begin their celebration it might be a little premature for the series but it certainly would appear to be appropriate at this stage with one out of the nine dunning it's the left and hooking and that will go for the base head banging off the fence Garvey's going to go for to earn his throw to Whittaker is in there Garvey moves to third on infield out and now with two down Morris has to get Kennedy to finish the game the Tigers are one going three games to one [Applause] and here comes Garvey to score he's simply overthrew that when he was gone for the strikeout and the upper stewardess cost him a run I could for Padres to [Applause] lying to write at Gibson the Tigers win at 4 - the heroes are Trammell with his two home runs and Morris with his second complete game of the series now game five with the Tigers looking to finish it up in front of their home fans Detroit puts its faith in dan Petry the loser of Game two at San Diego in the tiger dugout a loose atmosphere prevails as even manager Sparky Anderson joins in the clowning over on the other side dick williams fails to see the humor Alan Wiggins leads it off wanted one and line drive right on by Petry and through into centerfield that is Wiggins of style to hit it right back up the middle and I think pending you can almost as we watch the replay of and disturbing is right back up the really doesn't swing hard p3 just loop it late with his glove I think it's almost like the first game Wiggins is going to send that message and I'm going to steal look at our fault club thorn and they do meet somebody like that fire as Wiggins eyes Petrie the count runs to 1 and 2 on Tony Gwynn he goes and it's chased and missed the throw kept the runner goes into center field juggled by center field 11 and Wiggins is to third now Steve Garvey is asked to do what the Padres have been unable to do get a lead in feel halfway and he hits it sharply the Whitaker Wiggins to the play [Music] you never said it [Applause] watch it parishes [Applause] past the place he never [Applause] if Williams argued but just a little and very civilly the Padres failed to score in the inning and so San Diego starter March Thurman took them out on the bottom of the first the base welts Lou Whitaker lined to right field [Applause] [Music] Alan Trammell forced Whittaker at second bringing up Kirk Gibson Kincaid [Applause] and the rally continued Lance Parrish and Larry Herndon single putting runners at first and third with Chet lemon up there's a basic time 3-nothing Detroit here comes diploid in and Williams called on reliever Andy Hawkins he closed the door on the Tigers but the pattern of an early Detroit lead had continued in the third however the Padres showed signs of life and the at-bats for Bobby Brown have become a litany of frustration he's over 13 as he chops it behind the bag to Trammell and beats it out Steve Garvey came to back two groundouts by Wiggins and Glen had moved Brown over to third and Garvey had a chance to put the Padres on the scoreboard and he slashes one of the hole knocked down and that's all and the run is in it gives Garvey a couple of opportunities you know he's going to pick somebody up it's a base hit an RBI and it's Tigers three Padres one no more scoring in the third but in the fourth inning the Padres tried to get something started again Kurt Bevacqua walked in with one out it was Gary Templeton I provoked would first Evans facto lined into left scenter sinking and that's in there for a base hit since he's blown away he falls down that allows Templeton to get the second and stopping a third is for BA kua Herndon was going away from his play he tried to twist his upper torso to get the ball back to the infield and he fell down while trying to do it so now you have Bobby Brown on the spot again it was Bobby's hustle for a base hit that gave the padres a run in the third he has a chance to tie it up with a base hit now fastball let's hit the left center lemon on the run practice tagging is Bevacqua to score holding his settlement go Brown just hitting tough luck he thrilled that for so now Alan Wiggins trying to pick up his buddy Gary Templeton and get the Padres even fastball hitting the left-hander lemon was shallow here comes Templeton lemon throw cut off by Evans he goes this battle that gets away and it's finally received by lemon Whitaker tried to Club it and couldn't and the Padres just tied it up so finally the San Diego fan had something to cheer about the game remained tied until the 5th and B Hawkins the pitcher Kirk Gibson the hitter fastball off the glove of metal deflected into run down by Evelyn and holding is Gibson with a baker Hawkins tried to keep the speedy Gibson close to first as he worked to Lance Parrish I Drive in lol Martinez on the grass on the track makes the cash gifts in cash going to second he's in there Hawkins then walk Larry Herndon and Williams brought in left-hander Craig Lefferts to pitch to Chet lemon but Lefferts then proceeded to walk lemon and so Sparky Anderson went to his bench sending up rusty Kuntz to pinch-hit for th Johnny Grove boots went after the first pair I fly out goes Wiggins makes the catch and coming with a play and scoring his I can't [Applause] easy plays he comes in and catches it unless he lost the ball Riggins was gone away from home Gwyn was coming into the play now watch when I just how close they are you know what he lost it I tell you why he did when the ball was halfway to right-field he stuck his hands out It was as if I don't know where it is I really feel that Tony Gwynn lost the ball after I saw his gesture moving ahead to the bottom of the sixth and Gary Templeton makes one of the series fine defensive plays on a ball hit by Trammell line drive off the glove and lob to necrotic the throw to Garvey got it anyway [Applause] another great throw by Gary Chambliss nettles has it and it spins away and there's Johnny honest [Applause] now to the bottom half of the seventh goose Gossage replaces Lefferts Gossage had pitched only one inning up to that point in the series he was brought in to face right-handed hitting Lance Parrish [Applause] Hector Martinez long [Applause] so now it's 5-3 Detroit before Gossage came in Craig Lefferts had been throwing very well Dick Williams regret falling on the goose we go to the top half of the eighth-inning and it's time for Sparky Anderson to call on his ace Willy her nan des for baccala steps in against him fastball and I Drive in a level Herndon looking up and this one gone so after we show you his specialty screwball he throws sub-aqua fastball we got a game again Tigers 5 Padres 4 and when you hit them that hard you're looking for it if the balk was a smart hitter he figured he'd get ahead of it because the other two guys didn't stay up there too long I'll look for the fastball to pop it and the kids are back in the game now in the Tiger half of the 8th the walk of fielder's choice on a sacrifice put runners at second and third with one out first Gibson is the batter and it seems like percentages indicate that dick Williams should call for an intentional walk that will load the bases and set up the possibility of a double play but as Williams visits the mound it's obvious that Gossage wants to pitch to Gibson and he convinces Williams that he can get Kirk you know attending first Gibson made his major-league his very first at-bat in a big league goose Gossage that's a great way to break in and gossiped struck him out on three fish the Louisville way Sparky says and maybe because of that got you to saying I can get it [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the series out the year [Applause] now all that remained were the formalities the Tigers are poised to celebrate as Tony Gwynn bats with two outs in the top of the ninth [Applause] Larry Herndon clutches winds drive and the Detroit Tigers become the 1984 world champion they win the fifth game eight to four and take the World Series convincingly over the Padres or games to want [Applause] baseball's answer to New Year's Eve in Times Square this one vintage 1984 Tiger Stadium in Detroit all of the world champion Detroit Tigers and with that let's go to the champions locker room and a Bob Costas let's turn now to Sparky Anderson 104 victories in the regular season Sparky yet on the postseason you lost only one the composite is 111 and 59 Bobby I don't care about none of that the only thing I care the public could see to me one of the most classic teams and people that I've ever been around the young man that won the Most Valuable Player I said I don't care what nobody said he's the best player in baseball we fell that way that's what we're going to say he deserves everything and everyone Allen speaks he speaks for this team I'll see you later Markey we'll be back I think there's a phone call waiting for him eventually will turn to Alan Trammell 9 for 20 including a couple of Homer's the MVP well thank you Bob I'll tell you what I wish we could divide it up between all of us I know that Jack was very deserving Kirk Gibson just one of these things that everybody's been contributing for our ballclub I just happen to have a good series but it's divided among all of us that's for sure Alan yesterday's ballgame that had to be the thrill of a lifetime the two two-run homers the four RBIs there no question but this is even special right here this is what it's all about we're going to get that ring this is the most important day of my life I'm going to celebrate in the rain at Tiger Stadium one of the brightest moments in Tiger history as they defeat the Padres eight to four and become the world champion of 1984 for Joe Garagiola this is Vin Scully wishing you a very good evening come to beg of calibration
