ABC Sports presents the 1977 World Series from Yankee Stadium in New York City a sixth game between the Los Angeles Dodgers of the New York Yankees on Sunday the Badgers play long ball with Yankee pitching featuring Steve Yeager three-run home run deep in the left-field seats Davey Lopes Senate report Steve Garvey had a double registrant his second home run of the series Don Sutton's winning performance easy 10 for the Yankees can win the championship tonight played three games to two going into the game number six well there it is all blue and white for the patcher green in the heart of it Yankee Stadium in the Bronx New York City in the side for game number six of the 1977 World Series conceivably the final game of the 1977 World Series we shall see about that if those it is worth remembering I think some of the notes from history last time we had a six-game World Series was in 1959 when the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Chicago White Sox and if the roar goes up here in Yankee Stadium tonight I think you can tell that being home might well be an asset for the New York Yankees just as being home was surely an asset for the Los Angeles Dodgers there have been ten sixth games played in the World Series over the last decade and the trailing team has won every time now whether or not history is going to tell us anything we'll know just about three hours from now the attitude of the two teams anticipation perhaps for the Yankees a little grim set jaw by the Dodgers either put it up or forget it for next year to pursue the points about the nightfall game let's turn now to hello again everyone and hello again Keith Jackson happy birthday to you it's nice to be 36 just young enough just old enough and Keith wishes you were exactly that a quick journalistic note to add to the tension of the occasion for the Dodgers Steve Garvey and Davey Lopes have received death threats via the telephone it's presumed they're the usual prank calls adequate security precautions hopefully have been faked in the meantime getting back to what Keith said the Yankees well know that they can end it all the night but they're not put out there rolling attention they're familiar with the adverse history that Keith and Russ Porter have already expressed in their familiar to with the fact that they faced this kind of situation against the Dodgers back in 1953 when a spunky little second baseman named Billy Martin set a record for a six-game World Series with 12 hits and the Yankees wanted in that sixth game in the bottom of the night so that's the way it is tonight the Yankees eager to close it out the manager is short of staying next year apparent harmony and yet the ruffled feelings not unconcealed because of the Figueroa situation on the Dodgers Tom terrific Seaver thank you very much I think just two quick points one momentum I think the Dodgers clearly established at Dodger Stadium on Sunday they do the Yankees out ten to four they've got to jump out on top tonight they have to score early to maintain that momentum those intangibles momentum confidence terribly important in the World Series so the second point I would say the reason they established that momentum they threw them they would go to right field we can get in the right field with the baseball I think we're just about ready to start the national anthem try and wrap up my points a little bit later on Tom thank you very much and of course we could not go through a world isn't not listening to this marvelous voice of Robin Merrill [Music] [Applause] whose broad stripes and bright [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] from the first time I heard the man's ticket [Applause] to enjoy it each passing year more Robert Merrill game sense in the 1977 World Series between the Dodgers and the Yankees for the Yankees leading three games to two the Yankee Stadium in New York City first pitched the war for the Yankee Clipper Joe DiMaggio [Applause] [Music] eze Joe Yankees of today's Dylan of the clip McKee as a player and as a man this ABC Sports exclusive is brought to you by Gillette makers of good thick rich homie Steve free by Chevrolet see what's new today at your Chevrolet dealer and by General Motors parts division [Music] the umpires for the nice game John McSherry of the National League back to the plate he lived right here in the Bronx nestor shylack at the american league first base s udall National League second base Larry McCoy American League third-base left-field line Jerry Vale National League right the line Jim Evans American League dimensions of ballpark left field foul pole 312 left-center 430 center field 417 right-center 385 right-field foul pole the short porch 310 the Dodger lineup this way Davey Lopes will be leading off for the Dodgers and second of course batting second the man who found himself in the most recent World Series game Bill Russell started a hit batting third the ever dangerous Reggie Smith fleet footed slugger Ron Cey have caused the consistent home run hitter he's three brave teen on the series this fellow you gut Joe White 7 out of 20 on the series Steve darling and after him dusty pink of the Power Man 2 with 6 out of 20 on the series and then Rick Monday there's only 1 of 8 on the series and after him the young man talked about the pregame show Steve Yeager hero in the most recent World Series game Burt Hooton the knuckleball nervo who's nothing he's dead here at Yankee Stadium in a game number 2 regarding the Yankee defense Lou Piniella who's had a very fine series both offensively and defensively in centerfield it is the speedster Mickey rivers a very important figure in tonight's game for the in right field two homeruns now in the world series of 77 Reggie Jackson the inner defense is the same as we've seen it study Greg nettles is over to third base feeling fine now awakened his shoulder at shortstop it is Bucky Dent the infield here at Yankee Stadium you got to know it to play it well he does at second base outstanding young ballplayer Willie Randolph steady as they come at first base Chris Chambliss whose bat has been rather quiet through the series but look out anytime and back at the plate tonight doing the catching the captain of the Yankees Thurman Munson and on the mound the dick right-hander Mike Torrez he won the ballgame Game three by a score of 5-3 he allowed only seven hits he struck out season-high of nine it was only in the third inning of the ballgame that he got in trouble with Smith singled Garvey singled and then with a two-out home run by Dusty Baker that was really the only mistake he made in that ballgame nine strikeouts as I said high for the year he was consistently over 90 miles an hour with his fastball in winning game number three and Billy Martin there is confident he's the man to have on the mound tonight Tommy Lasorda pensive but in his own way confident he saw his team went when it had to on Sundays confident they can win when they have to tonight [Applause] now as davey lopes walks to the plate once again tom seaver well I think as I was saying in the pregame show he sees what the Dodgers establish they did have momentum and they establish that by being able to go to the opposite field the Dodgers were prior to this have been up there trying to hit the ball a hitter try to pull the ball a hitter is much easier to pitch though if he tries to pull the ball and especially here in Yankee Stadium great big Yankee Stadium if the Dodgers try and pull the ball I think tonight they might well be back on a plane headed for LA before midnight Davey Lopes takes the first pitch from dick Mike Torrez who signed for 20,000 bucks out of Topeka Kansas ball one high and inside and Lopes goes for a pitch number two doesn't get it and it's one in one Davey 3 for 20 with one home run and Torrez starts out the game at 91 miles an hour on the jugs gun that's feet on the ground right for the shortstop Bucky Dent one this Yankee crowd will be roaring all night long with every single out well they know they can win it right here to get a World Championship with one more game Bill Russell the Dodger shortstop Reggie Smith on deck Russell now 4 for 23 with 2 runs batted in and a curve ball fight to the corner strike one [Applause] hip toward Willie Randolph the second baseman to I Tom do you prefer for working every fourth day or every fifth day I work every fifth day our work with four days rest because Mike prefers working in rotation and he doesn't mind working on three days rest he's a little bit different picture than I am he's a sinker ball pitcher where I'm a riding fastball a two run home run in game number two a two-run home run in game number five for Reggie Smith he has a total of four runs batted in five for 18 hits it toward the left side big mouths dip knocks it down he'll have no play [Applause] waiting on the official scorers to call it look like if he'd handled it cleanly he would have had a play they call it error on the shortstop they don't want Reggie I want to keep Reggie off the bases because he's so much more effective as a left hand Bennet on the right-hand batter antar is pitched up well Bucky should have had the blood Ron Cey now cleanup hitter is at the plate with two outs Reggie Smith on burst and Steve Garvey on deck and the pitch is outside for ball one Preston Gomez coaches a third for the Dodgers Jim Gilliam at first where Adams is the pitching coke [Applause] when it is fine [Music] the spout or not Reggie Smith Cantor's on down to second so apparently and was not fouled away or at a big clunk I guess it came off Thurman Munson's chest protector or mash to Yankee defensive mistakes in the first inning they had not made an error in the entire series until Sunday's game when they made two costly ones one by Piniella one by nettles that led to the Yankees zooming to a five to nothing lien instead of Pabst two had the Dodgers zooming two apart to nothing instead of perhaps a two to nothing lead assball charged to Thurman Munson error on the shortstop passed ball Cey looks it is low ball 2 2 & 1 now with Smith at second base we have come from summer weather to winter almost winter weather certainly autumnal where the temperature going into the 40's tonight say looks at his below 3 & 1 incidentally the Dodgers with eight home runs just one short of the team record of nine set back in 1955 when Duke Snider hit four low ball four two Dodgers fourth now Steve Garvey in my opinion tom seaver key man in a pressure ball game like this because he does have the favorites to ride the ball normally where it's pitch well he was a much different hitter in Los Angeles on Sunday I really do think the part of the Dodgers problem when they first came in here they tried to hit the ball out of the ballpark he's down talking to them before the game and they kind of talked among themselves it wasn't a kvass meeting but Garvey clearly established that he would go to right field Sunday in Dodger Stadium low ball one which I might add is the Jet Propulsion Center in the daytime if the ball and it counts Gary's carrot-top I can hit it out anywhere though were those massive forearms as Smith leads at second and Cey leads at first and the pitch to Garvey low ball two two balls and no strikes Dusty Baker is on deck Torres is in trouble not really of his own making era by dent opened the door the pass ball by Munson added to it and then Torres himself did add to it but the base on balls to say all's hit down the right-field line go to the corner second phase he'll score Ron he's coming to the plate here's the a third base when the Dodgers made food or Nothing well let's just put Tom Seaver said going the right field and the Yankees continued to pitch him outside when the book of most gouts is especially in a ballpark like this as we look at it again Steve hitting it to the right side the book is pitch Garvey in in in on that pitch you could hear this you see Smith scoring that ball and and Reggie getting it down in the right-field corner Ron Cey of course scored on the triple as well at boss he went right with the pitch you saw Thurmond set up outside and he went right with that's the pitch that those hitters the Dodger hitters we're trying to pull before and if you try and pull that pitch it's a long flyball to centerfield or left-center field Dusty Baker up there 6 for 20 in the series he has one homer he has five runs batted in and Mike Torrez now down on the ball game two to nothing as a man of dirt and Garvey and he is now at 2 and oh that consistently has been low and away again he is blown away go back to that point of a that you seen Billy Martin that the last time we had a six-game World Series was 1959 when the Dodgers beat the White Sox a long time ago aired one it's 3 and 1 to Dusty Baker with Rick Monday on deck he was three and one to say and now he's three one here to Baker you'll watch dusty release pin if he gets his pitch fouls it off and it's ball at three and 2 that pitch is outside and he tried to pull the ball now that's exactly what the Dodgers can't do that pitch has got to be at the right center if he hits that ball well and does pull it there's no way that he can pull it out of the ballpark Perez made a good pitch on the outside part of the plate you've got to go with that dick Tidrow is in the Yankee bullpen there he is bullpens are covered because people were throwing things down in there the other night they put a cover off toward him out on a fastball the letter but the Dodgers use an error a passed ball a walk and a crippled by Steve Garvey as you see Baker go down swinging and they jump out to a to the nothing lead they got the two runs on one hit to nothing Dodgers Yankees coming up is the Yankee starting lineup Mickey rivers centerfield he's 4 for 23 on the series steady going Willie Randolph is off of 21 Thurman Munson comes into the series like Garvey with 7 hits out of 21 turns at bat Reggie Jackson having a good series 6 of 17 Chris Chambliss well he hasn't had that good a series but still he's 5 for 20 and Greg Nettles 4 for 17 he's been struggling Lou Piniella has been a consistent hitter 6 of 19 and Bucky Dent has surprised at the play freely with five for 17 pitcher of course is Mike Torrez hurt by the error and the pass ball in the first inning that led to two Dodger runs keep the defense both runs unearned in left-field for Los Angeles Dusty Baker got the only Dodger error Center steals a night for the right-hander pitching it is Rick Monday hitting from the left side in right field Reggie Smith for the right-hander pitching he also goes from the power side his power side the left the inner defense the penguin Ron Cey is at third base at SAC shortstop it'll be build muscle and over at second base the Whippet for the Dodgers the man they need on base Davey Lopes the top of the order and the man who delivered the triple a moment ago for the two earner and Ron Steve Garvey back of the plate big three-run homer for him on Sunday Steve Yeager and on the mound Burt Hooton won the game six to one here at New York game number two the only real pressuring he had put on him with Randolph single Munson singled Jackson with a double play to get in the New York run in the fourth and fifth innings only time the Yankees were able to put any pressure on him in game number two now the top of the order for the Yankees Mickey rivers Willie Randolph and Thurman Munson in game number three in Los Angeles was Mickey rivers most productive outing hits the ball high in the air to the left side and it's drifting toward the crowd but Baker goes right tumbles into the brilliant catch the Dodgers with that two runs in the bank obvious alive obviously alive and well up for the occasion [Applause] watch Baker now as he goes right to the wall the fence is low there it is also padded he can afford the bump it reaches and then goes almost into somebody's left you think one out and the pitch to Randolph from Burt Hooten is lowball one Oh ball shoes I would imagine that was comforting for Burt to note the rotation of the umpires in the series to see the National League no would be back at the plate tonight it's amazing John McSherry is probably one of the few umpires in the National League that you might consider even to be a highball umpire he's a big man he must weigh about 260 pounds in probably six six and he'll call more high strikes than almost any other national league umpire 3 & 1 the count now on Willie Randolph Thurman Munson in the on-deck-circle to nothing Dodgers are two unearned run Russell Flags it down or the structure play and close off Randolph I noticed last week from the dodgy here in the second games and Bill Russell was out there for twenty minutes early with Jim Gilliam just needed one ground ball after another working that entire shortstop area because it's a little bit different year ball tends to care them more bounce to the light every time because it it slants that way Lance down Bucky Dent spent almost a half hour explaining the infield lie to keep the other day when we were here to stop the series Thurman Munson low ball one [Applause] Munson has hit safely in nine straight games in the World Series including the last year he has been brilliant and handling the New York pitching a roller toward the shortstop Russell Russell almost pulled it down the line and pulled Garvey off the bag but Steve able to handle we played one inning the Dodgers lead the ipas2 to nothing the Dodgers jump on top two to nothing as we go down to the top of the second inning this telecast presented by authority of Major League Baseball intended solely for the private non-commercial use of our audience any publication reproduction retransmission or other use of the pictures descriptions and accounts of this game without the express written consent of Major League Baseball prohibited bottom third of the order now for Los Angeles Rick Monday's Anna Mueller Steve Yeager the catcher and Burt Hooton the pitcher the designated hitters not being used this year in the world dudes Rick Monday 1 for 8 in the World Series [Applause] on the ground this campus at first-base waves Torrez the way it makes the way itself I'm dawn the Monday night game in Baltimore you may remember Keith the Yankees against the birds we were with Mike that day was due to pitch that night he made that very point fouled off by Steve Yeager 6 for 16 two home runs and five runs batted in and the Commissioner with the eternal phone in his hand not only that wearing a sweater not a topcoat and he's probably gone there's Burt Hooten the camp one strike to Steve Yeager with one out and nobody on the Dodgers on top to do nothing to that is lo another thing I keep about so many days rest three days rest or four days rest you get down and you talk to the pitching coach you talked to a red Adams about his pitchers all is foul and it gets so fine to the point where he'll say well he's pitching with three days rest which means that he's pitching on the fourth day but he's going from a day game to a night game which means four or five extra hours of rest or he's going from a night game to a day game and all those things you know go into the makeup of a pitching coach helping the manager decide who's going to be the best pitcher on a certain day did you pitch him on a Wednesday your pit wait because we're playing a day game and pitch them on Thursday all those things that's what it's one of the things that a pitching coach does in helping a manager one ball and two strikes now to Steve Yeager will point out swinging him in two the man who will get the call tomorrow night in Game seven for Los Angeles Lefty's Tommy John a my dad that John Seaver is stunning pitching all over again they've reissued Christie matthewsons 1912 but pitching in a pinch and Tommy is playing paying close attention to it learning how to throw the fade away in the drop a drop so trying to learn the drop Burt Hooton the pitcher as the plate hits the ball to right field short right Reggie Jackson makes the catch and Mike Torrez gets the Dodgers in order in the top of the second inning Oh after an inning and a half the score Los Angeles to New York nothing bottom of the second inning for the Yankees middle of the order Reggie Jackson Chris Chambliss Greg Nettles three tough left handed out the mayor Abraham Breen team of New York on the right and their towns all bundled up in me used for this 56 degree weather 80 degrees on their way yeah remember what color is here though leaves turning beauty of autumn songs even Southern California now comfortably in sky the Revo born in Connecticut and loving every minute went for my song walk in the woods today with my two dogs [Applause] can't get in the house huh she kicked me out I can't get back you don't have a key [Laughter] Reggie up now to face Burt Hooten [Applause] the is high [Applause] [Music] [Applause] two balls and no strikes revolve and no play Mike Torrez and Thurman Munson sat in side-by-side the Yankee dugout last pitch was an interesting pitch he got behind Reggie two-and-oh still for the knuckle curveball in game number two when Hooton beat the Yankees Jackson struck out looking hit into a double play struck out swinging hit a flyball to center blankies have their own feelings about Hooton having seen him once Tom and I with the Yankee super Scout Bertie Tibbetts whose thesis is you just go with the pitch don't try to overpower Chris Chambliss lowball one over Hooton now has wrong he is yet to put one in the strike zone Dodgers lead two to nothing a pair of unearned runs the top of the first inning there is one of those eye strikes Tom Seaver talked about Harry good Keith excellent that strike a lot of umpires the National League you won't get that at this price it will be too high one in one the campus Jackson off first blush doesn't go low and away ball two I've made this point several times now during this world series that a picture cannot get behind hitter got behind Reggie Jackson three you knows behind two and one here you cannot get behind good hitters and get a hip-deep we're good hi just as John Siever made [Applause] well I got a I'm sure we'll see that replay him and I've got to make a point here he was fleeing all - pardon me - and over Reggie Jackson he threw the knuckle curveball for ball three he got behind Chris Chambliss here and came here with a fastball a low fastball it cannot pitch behind the major leagues I just can't say it enough because it's such a basic principle of fishing you cannot give good hitters like Chris Chambliss or Jackson an upper hand Thomas otter and he can't wait for a pitcher to find his groove knocked down three games to two in game number six now they've cleaned up some of the debris the banners or whatever it was that came floating out onto the Beal the streamers on the pitch now the exact model is low vol 1 remember in Philadelphia when Burt didn't get a couple of calls quite for it he came unglued it really did sharp shot Garvey glove off the bat of nettles boarded sharply makes the put off that's the worst doubtful Leonie I was against the Philadelphia pitcher Christiansen it was at the plate at the John Buchan thorny on up struck out the umpire said no then he walked Christiansen and then the next three back thought I had no recourse but to take of it red Adams there in the dugout the pitching coach talking to the manager Tom Lasorda the batter is Lou Piniella up for the first time Piniella six for 19th of two runs batted in his wins and bowels it away he had a single in three trips against Burt Hooton in game number two [Music] [Applause] five all Reggie Smith right theater makes the catch in short the right center to our [Applause] [Music] Yankees shortstop Bucky Dent now at the plate a 2 2 ballgame Memphis long home run at 385 and then some with Jackson aboard dip had a single in three trips against Hooton first time you looked at it that fits throne to the hands out of the strike zone took the truck didn't get the best knuckle curveball his head on that that one really dropped off the table there's another one same thing ground ball down to Davie Lopes inning is over for the Yankees but two run homer and we're all even at two at the end of two where you see this by virtue in the 57 trouble getting over so far in a ball game this is the first pitch he made to punch again the knuckle curveball now watch the action on this it's a dandy whoo I'm just a toe defensive swing that he had that was the best knuckle curve that he's had since the game started Oh Burt Hooton reflecting in the Los Angeles dugout sitting alongside Rick Monday as the top of the Dodger order will come to the plate now in the top of the third inning Davey Lopes Billy Russell and Reggie Smith you might say that the Yankees now grab that momentum back to their side la has got an excellent chance to get it right back they've got the top of their lineup coming up right here in the top of the bird Torres is blowing away ball one to Davey Lopes and grounded to the shortstop Bucky Dent first time up how's that away for strike 1 1 & 1 [Music] [Applause] Lopes has stolen two bases in the series it's a high pop out of play New York has one stolen base that from Mickey rivers neither team has run that part opportunity has not been there really funny thing about that Martin has a reputation as a venture some gambling manager but his bosses call him a conservative mention particularly gave ball fouled off and he is indeed just that fight again make the point to that the New York Yankees are in the World Series and went through the playoffs with 24 players instead of the normal 25 that was because of the Carlos may trade to California in the 16th of September they were not allowed to replace him on us Whitey Herzog said they could have made back [Applause] big gap in right-center field defensively for Lopes he punted out there he can run a while 2 & 2 the count blow it away [Applause] you can be sure doesn't want to lose davey lopes yetis in danger of doing just that it's the ball flat for a whoa Mike throws it on a bounce contentless went out [Applause] the simplest kind of a little play that'll be cheerful or it'll get away and you see that replay now that I think that really showed what I was talking about a hitter trying to pull the ball now that ball was on the outside part of the plate Davey was trying to pull the ball when you do those things you hit a lot of pop flies you hit a lot of weak ground balls Bill Russell career-high during the regular season and batting at 278 Rosen the Bucky Dent down well I'll tell you this the Dodgers aren't looking long at Mike Torres are they Mike how about that that's an empty amount also a record Tama takes that to buy furniture for the pawn [Applause] breaking pitches inside and low Reggie Smith got aboard on dents error moved a second or Munson's fastball scored when Darby's cooker we talked about the importance of these two guys the leadoff hitter smokes from Russell the reason being obviously you look at Reggie Smith up at the plate right now he's up but nobody on base [Applause] [Laughter] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] where he seems to be at least doubly more effective though the batting averages don't show if counting left he has against padding right commend this hitter from the left side and he's becoming a tremendous force in his World Series and a big day Sunday peter o'malley son of walla roman now running the ball club here's the pitch by terra's again right in his wheelhouse I mean that is right down the old poop chute and goodbye ok you couldn't put it on a tee better than that the Reg expiry so the momentum the tons been talking about goes right back to the Dodgers and the batter is Ron Cey the cleanup hitter right from the outside corner it was a high strike interesting stats five runs only three base hits remember the first two Dodger runs walk under Torrez walked Cey back at the first inning inside and high the score is now three to Los Angeles top of the third there he is leads the series and home runs with three feeling pretty good ball to the hole black pick it up he almost had a play something hit a good stuff I don't think dimple have been able to get se in the hole well he's got some Golden Gloves in his closet on his mantle he described that ball he knocks it down and turns around will be right out in front of him easy to pick it up on the first year Mike right there he still might have a play but he misses that one OOP he stole he wouldn't have a player I think could be Abednego picked that one up base hit third of the game for the Dodgers 3 to Los Angeles on Reggie Smith's solo home run Ron Cey is on first Steve Garvey the triple home two runs his first time up he's the guys piling up the hits leads all hitters with eight hits now in the series Torrez curves him outside who said on Sunday that not been a dominant hitter in the series in terms of a bassist talked about Brock and Richardson with 13 Abby's in 68 and 64 at home run incidentally by Reggie Smith ties the all-time Dodger record for the series said in 1955 the series in which Duke Snider struck four they're talking now obviously to the bullpen as Yogi Berra hangs up and we'll have some action back there with Garvey fouling it away [Music] there's the man's been dick typical second time dick has been up he got up back in the first inning one like this in trouble two out here Garvey hits it deep to center rivers backs up may have to do a gun that's the fact [Applause] the Badger regained the lead at the top of the 3rd 3 to 2 on Reggie Smith's fall rock from the helicopter this picture of handy Stadium on this October 18 1977 and the Dodgers lead the Yankees by a score of 3-2 in game number 6 time to picket the 7th game the Dodgers of the first city Smith reached for an error Cey walked Garvey tripled Dodgers led it to nothing Yankee second Jackson walked Chambliss homered to two Dodger third Smith home run Dodgers 3-2 and Mike Torrez up for the first time at the plate swings and misses for strike one with Mickey rivers on deck and Willie Randolph to follow iwas Houten's fastest pitch 92 miles per hour Tom Seavers consistently emphasized from the very first pitch you can't get behind the head as through two innings Hooton has not had a count of more than one strike on any heavy that's the first time two strikes and he does it against the opposing pitcher naturally no pity for us weak in her mouth that's one now Bert will have to work his way through them madam the top of the Yankee batting order now making rivers and then William Randolph rivers fouled out Dusty Baker who tumbled into the seats tonight the gun leads the game [Applause] [Music] Beach it on the ground foul keep talking about rain being in the offing but so far we haven't seen it here thank goodness we don't might get some tomorrow this there I got thunder showers tomorrow oh stop you know at least nice autumn weather that pitch is low one on one to Mickey rivers one out and nobody on sure was pretty looking out the window today at Central Park with leaves starting to turn I'll admit it ball is fouled off for the left side out of play [Applause] I think - it must would only please that's merciless I haven't had a chance to eat this is high 2 & 2 [Applause] I thought never tasted anywhere like a does of the ballpark the brainwash bond I guess is found I saw here two balls and two strikes [Applause] with one out and nobody aboard [Applause] [Music] that's toward davey lopes second basemen guns into first you've got to down it was on a cold windy and wet day believe in Chicago at Wrigley Field in 1972 in April that Burt Hooton drew his no-hitter against the Phillies laughs won't happen tonight cold weather doesn't bother it Willie Randolph takes the ball inside [Applause] all to that's been part of our first problem here tonight akiza's the knuckle curveball has not been able to get it over for a strike and that one was way high everyone there's that high strike that's right make Sheree John will I carry them I will give you a funeral you still get the low pitch but you'll get more high strikes from him than you will most other naturally don't hire Burke might escape with his breaking 52 because he does feel it hard high flyball Davey Lopes drifted back into short Center Rick Monday come again Rick calls him off and makes the catch of the Yankees are going in order in the bottom of the third Eddie though we travel three innings to play in the store the Dodgers 3-2 the Yankees to the great sports artist here I mean he did that great bureau of the Montreal Olympics many of you probably seen it on television as we look at a call ball on a shaker at the end of the Olympics he asked Frank Gifford to take a look at it give an opinion Gifford said looks like a pizza after Frank caught up What did he say maybe Jeff was hungry we're not doing a bet you better job up here in the booth I sell two balls and no strikes now it's true you know Dusty Baker the man who did most of the damage in Los Angeles to Mike Torres and that five free game as dusty hit a three-run homer on the only mistake really the Torres made the whole game it is not free [Applause] if b9 3 and nothing new I hit a like Baker you're asking for trouble yeah good chance have the ball hit hard someplace high drive to right center Jackson going back going back on the track regimented go bakers gave it a ride about 380 feet Reggie Jackson made the catch on the track at 385 only the dimensions to this ballpark competed Baker on that hit row again in the pen for New York third time up Rick Monday now the plate do you think that last ball have been out Sunday afternoon and off stadium that arrogant repulsion Frank Bundy hold it sharply to Chambliss his first time up tonight over one inside or 1 1 and 1 one out nobody on Dodgers lead 3 to start just to play long ball but the Yankees though home run and the triple the big blows for their three runs watched over the shortstop's head into left field for a base hit by Rick Monday Lou Piniella slides down but gets it in [Applause] that is the fourth hit of the ballgame for the Dodgers but now we're repairing the turf skeevy at Steve Yeager walks to the plate see Lou slapping down foot went out from under [Music] but he held Monday at first base now here is Jaeger three run homer for him [Applause] the leftfielder Piniella goes into second place [Applause] that's very good aggressive baserunning by Steve Yeager it's a ball down in the corner and Piniella made a fine play off here in about the sidewall and he made a good throw to second base and just nipped it but that's still good rest of base running when you're up by one run we said earlier in this series Piniella can fool you pulling boys at the mound now conference with Torrez and Munson because obviously the hitting jars two hits in this inning both good shots but Piniella who is not the fleetest man afoot once he get to the ball he saw it he will usually hold it despite the air on Sunday and he will make an accurate throw as he did that what about that play he made on Saturday sensational of Ronnie's say the play still of the series superb catch Bert Hooton now with two out and a chance to help himself with Rick Monday at third-base Dodgers lead 3-2 Boonton up at a fly ball caught by Reggie Jackson in short right his first time up all one from Mike Torrez as a strike this one-on-one top of the order Davey Lopes waiting on deck time called now by the umpire down the first base line nestor shylack if the series goes seven games Nestor will be back behind the plate tomorrow night he's from the American League and he is the senior umpire of this group Torrez delivers a movement swings and misses to stress pitchers will be tomorrow night pair of left-handers Ron Guidry for the Yankees and Tommy John for the Dodgers monday big leadoff third for strike three and so the Dodgers were turned away in the top of the fourth inning and the score remains Los Angeles 3 New York 2 preceding a message on behalf of Major League Baseball as we move now to the home half the fourth inning and you look down on Yankee Stadium you can see the diapers have three runs on five hits two runs with the first hitting were both unearned it was of an error and a fastball that there is his Lillian Carter turned into a host to coach jetsetter here with the World Series having the back of the light before pension for the moment as he watched his birth book and crank up pitch to Thurman Munson Reggie Jackson and fish temple it was Jackson establish who get the damage the burst back in the bottom of the second inning when he is not getting thoughtful curve in the strike zone and particularly when he starts bouncing that thing in front of the plate he's going to have a long hard night [Music] when you got a picture number 155 is not the curveball you've got to be able to get your number one pitch over if you don't you know you find it be a good ball up with your number two things and you could not be able to do it getting you off this um not able to get you fastball way you wanted the days regard you don't have a fastball that's the beautiful thing that's the art of fishing being able to do something when you're don't you know the greatest stuff in the world Thurman Munson takes hot that's the high number purple he's got to get that establish that get it over he's going to be effective I believe the Dodger pen is quiet for the moment so she was up in the second that graphic an index to the consistency of Thurman Munson hurries it back in the hole [Music] I think that illustrates you know that's the high basketball hoop the second pitch and Munson courses laced it left field for a base hit so Thurman now has eight hits in the series even as he Garvey does the two vying hits to hit [Music] Reggie Jackson [Applause] big big World Series consent from Billy Boy as he comes up with his third theory quickly go ahead some see the this talked about for [Applause] [Music] so far the ball game damn Lisbon Beckman for New York Reggie Smith for Los Angeles the Yankees are back three nobody out at the plate nettles on deck Fenella Goffe follow so say in the Dodger bullpen now this is obviously a stall move for Tom Lasorda he'll give a little hand signal out to Davey Lopes at second base so they come in to talk to his pitcher if you have to get your tube open a little bit more time we'll see if this is a fastball they're trying to pitch hard stuff in on Jackson that's right in his wheelhouse he just spins on that ball and hits it to short porch here in the Yankee Stadium strike one December that ball went out of here at about 320 feet maybe 25 didn't have a whole lot of lift on it but sure did have a lot of velocity one ball and one strike a sort of moving around as it is or front [Applause] two-in-one here he comes right now I didn't think it'd be much longer it was time to sort of take him out or just talk to Burt Hooten I'm not sure that you're too happy the meantime some almost unnoticed Reggie Jackson second out of 18 on the series and he's now tied with Dusty Baker and Steve Yeager at five RBIs for the series Reggie's having a big series as the conversation goes on let's quickly go to the record book the joy a pioneer in six-game series babe ruth's pep fujas Reggie Smith and Reggie Jackson have hit three home runs in a six game sir should add the Reggie Smith has five ribbies on the series so it's a four-way done John McSherry Tom Lasorda engaging in conversation Reggie don't blame me a bit red one of the few times I've seen him smile in the last 7 seconds usually frowns over there they're cleaning up the field as some stuff has come on and alia social now will be coming on and apparently it's going to replace her food time is up there's a story on the pitcher to tonight's ballgame and that's a book on Burt Hooton because he's gone after three innings flush total of four runs three earned on three hits he walked one [Music] he's off my Korres across the way in the bullpen now one run lead some of the burden of the evening has now shifted off not only to the relief man for the Dodgers but to the rest of the Yankee pitching staff because [Applause] Reggie Jackson hitting one of the two homeruns struck off Burt Hooten the burst by Chris Chambliss the two with a 2-run shot vacillation of booths the story of Reggie Jackson all year long the principal actor in the Yankees daily soap opera now it is 2 and 1 on Chris Chambliss as Sosa comes in and he this is high in a way with a fastball to make it 3 at 1 bottom of the fourth inning nobody out i fly ball that's hip to the left side Billy Russell going over [Applause] [Music] you could smell trouble on that one [Applause] cautiously thinking Russell had it Valentin and suddenly Russell realized he didn't have it bow in hand at all watch this communication government a long way out there in first dusty had to come a long way playing you know this huge Yankee Stadium outfield but there's no excuse for that when you're a championship team that's the I got it you take it kind of play so Jeff was has a double and he is seven to twenty two on the series this is where Alfonse and Gaston broken here's the pitch now to metal blown away Chambliss at second base two runs are in the Yankees are leading four to three there's a lot of people standing is in the Dodger bullpen but at the moment nobody's boys so far bringing a good hard fastball and a good hard slider keep in mind that nettles is a dead fastball hitter dude this job is going to get to be on our second and the over 2/3 would like another run make it 5 the free balloon loose on the field their counsel Texas Bobby Cox coaching that first-base have dick over a third [Applause] the game Hank is trying to break it over here in the bottom of the fourth inning they lead three games outside too get on the ground the Lopes at second throws that matter [Applause] that was the first out of the inning he did his job he moved him over but one out third now it's Pinellas test there's really almost no way from close to keeping elephant getting that guy over there other than popping it up drink is a dead fastball hitter a dead pull hitter runner on second base always gotta do is pull the ball on the ground like that that's an easy guy over to third base he did exactly that Herod did his job now all he needs a sacrifice fly for Piniella Yankees will be a five-degree who run lead in this game for the team that has the edge of the series [Applause] with arrested Sparky Lyle already and snortin to fountain that is fouled off [Applause] his junk rau a lowball you had a brief life last Saturday against the Yankees they belt it a merrily come out early rhoden came on to do a great job but Ron Guidry was even better [Applause] break 1 pitch 2 Lubin Ella one out campus my ball will provision [Applause] Oh what social throws hard 92 miles an hour there's the man of third the infield is up obviously over the land at third the outfield straightaway Reggie Smith not too deep and right he'll take her back he has room so even as his job Piniella did his I was warned boosters their yelling ludar happy for loose sacrifice fly driving v run for the Yankees three runs in this inning [Applause] that of course is exactly what happens when you do your job and moving the runner over better now up you get Thank You shortstop he checks him feel at first base nestor shylack says no didn't go through so it's plate umpire called it wash yeager begging to shylack his shoes down firing back there a little bit himself I think hey he's really throwing that ball so some 93 miles per hour Bucky ticky in Toms terms reading Christie Matheson the vernacular of the modern-day player he's bringing it to home plate Reagan won the count Bucky Dent Yankees 5 3 there's a strike cuando Reggie's talking to Tom he's making a plane reservation I think the Yankees have got it wrapped up yep thousand sharply oh boy makes a good play folks over there friend to talk them out of the ball out is 3m - that's interesting John anybody on the Reds ever talking on the phone any player during the game maybe lower his head my Fuhrer in general you'd ever known reservations for 300 here's the pitch inside you might be talking to one loss Yankee Scouts in the stands who sends down the confusing instructions where to play what the guy is throwing and all the rest by the way that was laughed at by a lot of teens Tommy but now your own team has come to GG Michael was telling us the other day remember the Reds have come to jeans a short talk about exactly what the Yankees did teams are beginning to get very interested white king is the guy doing it he rendition in the series along with Cedric Palace Bertie Tibbetts red Adams talking to the bowl and you start to Reggie don't think so breaking pitch on the corner strike one I got to give you another little sidelight into pitching here Sosa walking eighth place hitter one of the cardinal rules of a of a pitcher not only not walking a pitcher you get that eighth place hitter out specially with two hours Torres gets it on the ground the Bill Russell [Applause] I'll explain that when we come back so the inning is over but it's a big one for the Yankees they score three five [Applause] to the top of the fifth inning we go now for the Los Angeles Dodgers Alliance tour showing you that the Yankees with three big runs in the bottom of four lead the Dodgers 5-3 and trying to slam the door on his big right-hander Mike Torrez and he'll be pitching to the top of the order Davey Lopes City Russell and Reggie Smith and what was it you wanted clean calm we're talking about the eighth place hitter trying to give you some of the thought processes that a pitcher should be going through on the mound we've got two outs nobody on eighth place hitter up if you get him out Sintra is really concerned about the next inning as well now starting the next inning that pitcher will be facing the pitcher which is almost like getting one out for the next inning as a result now Sosa is going to come back out there he'll be facing the top of the lineup Mickey rivers instead of a picture where he could get an easy out next in it Davey Lopes hitless in two trips tonight Russell and Reggie Smith and he shortens up brings metals charging in from third base takes it 4-1 there's no way the Yankees can feel secure though they have to feel good about their two-run lead because as men and boy knows that very well oh this Dodger team is she it's cutback capacity audio and I shown it in the world series folks looking at Preston Gomez the third as we looked in the Dodger drug on hits the ball high in the air to left field no Piniella has plenty of time [Music] [Applause] now it's Bill Russell with the bases clean in front of it barky Lyle shows up for the first time tonight in the Yankee bullpen there is he's been looking for work the last three days he may be over rested hello Torres football won the Russell Russell also hitless in two things outside taras getting behind ahead is John Martin goes Billy Martin do he noticed it as well.did davey lopes now to a no to Bill Russell you know talking about Sparky Lyle you're talking about a real professional in the baseball game as a pitcher and even though he hasn't been in the game make up those complete games from Torrez and get me and all that healthy games even though he's not going to get in and he'll get up and throw on the bullpen he might fall for two when he's down there if he knows that he needs to work they won't call from the bullpen Sparky knows what he has to do to keep himself ready even if the Yankees were hits hitting nothing in the season he'll get up sometimes and throw in the bullpen it is now free nothing at a frisbee on the field Terra's getting himself into trouble and Reggie Smith up next for yep here comes the big man acted about it we talked about at the top of the third inning talking about momentum swinging back and forth the Yankees just it looks like the Dodgers to the sack would Smith hit the home run and that looks like the Yankees have taken it back you get one or two of those leadoff hitters for the Dodgers on and bring this power up not this time a 6-4-3 double play the Dodgers are gone after four and a half Yankees five Dodgers three Reggie Jackson in the Yankee dugout as the top of the order comes to the plate Mickey rivers Willie Randolph Thurman Munson Reggie would be the fourth hitter the Yankees five Dodgers three bottom of the fifth inning Elias Sosa rivers those at the right center [Applause] Oh rivers is on [Applause] now Sosa has a couple of worries Randolph who can hit and run FOIA but rivers the speedster and rivers you can steal meantime Tommy Reggie Smith did exactly what you said they shouldn't do chimed fully outside plus the double play right can't prying tied up on one pitch are you gonna hit your home runs if you hit 37 home runs a year you're gonna hit him you're gonna get your pitch at the hitter but it's tough to manufacture Scioscia goes to first doctors think that Billy Martin might send him and that's exactly the routine when he goes he goes because Billy Martin wants him to Lendl back in Wow the Dodger bullpen again [Applause] there is a short lead not going Randolph shortens to bunt takes a strike Ron Cey popping in from third row or mning in the pin pressures on Steve Yeager here as well if they do sin rivers [Applause] [Music] that'll be quick we're doing with him magnificent are the better defensive catchers in baseball [Applause] save Jordan third whoever's short lead at first not going but down around hurry first a second they get it he threw out second base a real fine play by jäger Thurman Munson singled and scored Iran in two trips the umpire John McSherry put a new ball in play one out one on bottom of the fifth inning the Yankees on top five to three heylia's social came into the fourth inning her goofing with critics bus four-on-three earn stars against Randolph himself his feast of the damaged knee which he was protective about a thing of the past [Applause] [Music] [Applause] saw Munson who slide up the bat handle with one out as if they might be thinking about moving Randolph the second the Munson so steady the men on base so tough I think that's a drive but if he's thinking about but he sees say way back to third base he was thinking right now he's going to take a shot at that hole at the right side in maîtrise huh yeah they might hit run porno now a good count to do it there's the big hole between Garvey and Lopes first Munson could go to right field as well as anybody in baseball and he's ahead of the count now if a lot of things offensively their team can do here so supposed to trying to keep him close to the bag Jackson of course is on deck take the fourth man come to the plate of this inning does something here went out Randolph at first [Applause] black sit down rose quickly back in Randolph we preached the first place to uh I noticed when Rick Monday started at center field like the turf kicked up under his hood he almost slipped when they hit quite a bit of rain here the other day on a raid at home there's a lot of water on the ground he saw Piniella slip earlier as well Reggie Jackson has walked and homered scored twice knocked in [Music] ray home runs in the series Sousa breaks the tension by throwing over the whole rainbow most again two out [Applause] series for Richie Jack that they coming [Applause] Wyn theme comes to the top the roof I believe that man 3 million dollars 2.9 million dollars beautiful ribs in this game it looks like that investment is paying off fastball right down the chute his turn just spins on it he's got a short porch in right field and a big strong man raised Yankees go ahead 73 something something I'll always remember that ball just got in at that point the outfield fence was at its highest it's 9 feet high Reggie Jackson the other day in his room with me on his way to meeting Billy Martin for an apparent Ramos lon look at Reggie he had to eat throw he knew it he didn't wanted to but he did it and he'll be back next year says George Steinbrenner and Martin is already assured of being back next year victory can bring harmony Doug rau gets the call and he'll be coming in from the Dodger bullpen as Reggie Jackson goes for successive home run the Yankees now lead seven to three and the doctors are in trouble a Dodger pitcher the third of the night dark Rao his seasonal record reflected there it was in the spark in Los Angeles where he was shelled by the Yankees when he got a surprise start for the Dodgers and he didn't last very long as Reggie Jackson the fourth home run and one serious ties a World Series record you could find almost any kind of record if you want to go deeper the record book [Applause] ravished one inning as he delivers now to Chris Chambliss in Los Angeles he was hit four hits three runs and all three were earned two balls and no strikes now to Chris Chambliss with two-out and Greg nettles on deck seven four three Yankee lead all on the Border's wreck one regi and now has a total of seven RBIs in a World Series the Garvey today will do it himself at the edges over so much after five innings of play 73 New York back with more after this work local station the scene just a few moments ago as Reggie Jackson went to his defensive position in right field you might call it a grand eyes we did all is especially for that man but all the robust this year all of the problems with media people the problems with his manager Alice we did for the Los Angeles Dodgers now down by four big run against Mike Torrez Ron Cey Steve Garvey and Dusty Baker and if you think this team will quit your mistake it's all one it is not however the ballpark to get it out very often at the left side unless you can pull it sharply it is so big at 387 left going over to 4:30 left center for 17 in center Ron Cey with a ban on his shoulder looking at Mike Torrez go to three and gold Tara's has been behind a lot of hitters John sieve his constant warning quickly behind three and OH on safe there's a strike of Sparky Lyle is up in the Yankee bullpen but if he starts getting behind this is exactly what the Dodgers need there Sparky Lyle they know he'd home run in the box they need single fanny to play their game to the office mosquito they gotta start getting away from the home run they don't need to hold back shop that's after falling behind him he comes back in strikes out the Dodgers need baseman do you get behind by this much we're down four runs we've got four it needs to go take the ball to the other field just take a single Peck away get two runs here get two runs there batter now is Steve garbage simple and a flyball to Center if both well plastic drag it down the third-base side with Greg Nettles deep mild of the way the Yankees trying to win their 21st World Championship the history of the ballclub what a history in this ball ball no Barbie step side I flipped it up to the plate anyway look at Thurmond he said was a good pitch right that in your repertoire never loses is that's a human high five all the right center playable Jackson coming over [Applause] now it is dusty Baker's 73 in the top of the six [Applause] hot sauce or pepper as known as dead real fireball left Piniella goes back to the track for a gets the Dodgers in order the end the top of the sixth inning the Yankees leave seven degrees history everywhere I think yep George Herman Babe Ruth one of six players to have hit four home runs in a World Series that Buster force out in center field where the Yankee bullpen is there are the six players obeyed the Iron Horse Lou Gehrig the Duke of Flatbush Duke Snider Hank Bauer to that great Yankee career Gene Tenace and now Reggie Jackson right now it's a strike Doug rau that it'll be Lou Pinella and Bucky Dent for New York the pitcher spot the fourth hitter no reason not to think Mike Torres won't be there devil swings and misses on a breaking pitch and quickly aroused in front two strikes [Applause] Dodger pen for the moment black pitch outside this figures to be raus last inning if he gets through it because he's up at that next inning and shouldn't watch somebody metal house it into the Yankee dugout [Applause] Brow's jump at this point the entire dr. Wolfe madness is to hold him they've got the Dodgers have nine hours to get back to the ballgame this can't get it whatever way to go ride darts job and the entire pol can hold him right there at least Frank's hot metals for the first time will be inning he's throwing harder and looks better than something he did it was brand-new it really does move the unnoticed Yankee who came through with the sacrifice fly at a very important time in the ballgame the Yankees did his job he's made another good who's made a fine throw catching Yeager at second when the Dodgers had a rally buddy the bear Big Mike out at the peak of Kansas sign for the year $20,000 he baseball is still destined to be a free-agent day after the season's over re-entry draft November 4 but gave Paulin he are getting close if you remember teeth what George Steinbrenner said at the pregame in a thing [Applause] Tom Lasorda space deep deep to centerfield but Rick Monday getting a good break on the ball and you have good visibility at this ballpark that's you out an Ellen excellent low ball headed to cocked a low ball for that sacrifice fly earlier on better now Bucky Dent Yankee shortstop to our faces queen [Applause] it's higher away this program an exclusive presentation of ABC sports let's pause five seconds to allow our local stations to identify themselves [Applause] I fly left-side Baker coming over it's in the seats [Applause] now you have the knuckler in the Dodger bullpen Charlie Hough is that an impressive ottoman his only appearance in the series he made them look helpless [Applause] when you haven't seen the dancer very often I'll tell you can make a lot of people with healthy reginal Martinez Jackson has had a night to remember I think the man just loves thrives on controversy ready for a long time there's Billy hearse a happy Billy burger ready for a long time he was in controversy a controversial team when he was with the Athletics if you here is been so far for over here with the Yankees he comes out in the game where if they win they go home and get some couple of dingers get heads it toward Russell what about the garbage again [Applause] so the inning is over Israel gets him an order Thanks thank you good to see you 7:3 this game is still in our view far from over but all year long should the Yankees win they've been characterized in the press as the best team money can mine look at the estimated and they're very solid estimates of the salaries of the Yankees rivers at that spigot Randolph at that figure Munson and Jackson had a similar figure of course bonuses and deferred payments are excluded Chambliss and on 250 nettleson under 35 Piniella 80 10 110 Torrez 85 he now wants to have four million and Martin in a hundred thousand Rick Monday hits it on the ground for the second [Music] [Applause] they followed by Steve Yeager and at the pitcher spot that's a lot of loot Tom save it Steve take all that Luke you had on about $32,000 which these Yankees had got a chance to winning that they hold on here tonight winner's share in a World Series great big Yankee Stadium contributed to that $32,000 those spikes for the winner's share that's not bad peanuts for about seven days work is it not to that Mike Torrez pitching to Steve Yeager the doctor screams of misses I'll tell you one thing about Torrez that I kind of like to considering his circumstances I do like his timing he can last this out ed Brooks and on deck as a pinch-hitter as he misses low and away the acre for one ball and one strike it's hopeful before that one keep 93 miles an hour so taras is still firing up the middle Mike Blackson now two down they're looking at seven outs now seven out of the world champions and they very well know it every one of those guys in that field where has been a good play on the mound big guys pretty agile on putting parts out there who attention please maybe Torres hurt himself twisted or something turned his body and now will come to the play the left-handed swinger he was in the on deck circle in one of the games in Los Angeles but don't believe he actually came to the plate I think obviously that's what Billy came out we're talking about how to pitch to Goodson this is a dead first ball fastball hitter from my little notebook of eleven years of acquiring hitters strengths and weaknesses was Goodson smiling on grimacing they are the strike with the appearance of Goodson at the plate though every one of the doctors I will have a beard in this world sir about off Taurus is trying to duplicate his performance of last week he allowed three runs on the Baker home run in the third they never scored on him after that he allowed the third run tonight in the third one true and a reminder that only one God to run has been earth the two in the first honor [Applause] retired the score continues after six and a half seven three the Yankees knuckleballer Charlie Hough is now on the mound the fourth Los Angeles pitcher and he throws a real denture let me tell you when you can get it over he's almost impossible let's go back to an earlier piece of videotape as Charlie talks about his pitch knuckleball I think is the weirdest pitch in baseball and possibly the most misunderstood most people think that it's strong with the knuckles and I don't know of anybody including myself that throws it that way we all throw it with the fingernails maybe not necessarily in the same spot on the ball but we all try and throw it with the fingernails and push the ball out so it has little or no rotation on the ball unlike a fastball which spin straight back or a curveball which spins forward or down a knuckleball has no true trajectory and therefore the wind cards in the stadium sometimes make the ball Bob around like a wiffle ball and it might break two or three different times on the way of the plate because of these unpredictable breaks that the knuckleball has an oversized catcher's mitt has been developed which is similar to a first baseman spoke which enables the catcher to catch the ball one-handed even though the knuckleball has all this movement it doesn't put very much strain in my arm and it enables me to pitch almost every day and it drives hitters up the wall Oh vanilla is one of those with a kind of stroke that quite possibly could handle it but I doubt very much if the big guy at the plate right now is gonna have much luck with it but you never know Mike Torrez the Yankee pitchers he got a piece of it I don't I don't think if that knuckleball is the main thing on his mind he's thinking about six more out two World Series wins and a championship for his team the New York Yankees that's outside the Yankees his 15 he previously played at Oakland Baltimore at Montreal at st. Louis [Applause] this one into taking his hacks up there and he yeah hacking it oh I'll bet see he drops eight feet dear if he goes on and wins this ballgame strikes out back at it you might hit it never know [Applause] New York City that's got to be the George Washington Bridge in this stadium you've got a scoop one bridge around the prior boroughs George Washington and a Throgs Neck Brooklyn and the Queen's Park thank you ever end of Java introvert geography lesson for the day TV anchor of course we will sit anywhere that he has by the handle Charlie Hough's knuckleball the egg will box it around quite a bit the size of the glove outside [Applause] there it is big ol thing for the right base hit forever [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the throw comes in from Reggie Smith and Hurley [Applause] that's just respect for the man's arm and right-field because Mickey rivers can run with anybody in American League if balls got down to the corner awfully quickly we guessed that he would think a chance to get to second base with one out on the floor bottom of the seventh inning Willie Randolph is at the plate with one out and rivers at first [Applause] Hey toughen up summon three to the edge of the crash the Nutter is in for a strike bigger boxes it around and keeps it in front of it [Applause] Garvey and rivers [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] go to first route kind of quiet down their ball club lady seven to three Randolph chops at it fouls it off [Applause] as a look at Dick Howser now comes back with the please back up [Music] remember how we taught the opening game about nerves and how you get butterflies and the opening game the first couple of innings it's that way at the end of the World Series it's just the end it has to be there's no other way the Yankees have to be thinking ahead to those final six outs Dodgers will have the top of the order coming up at the top of the eighth anything fouled at the plate and the count holds is 1 and 2 on Willie Randolph with one out and rivers at first 21 championship all right goodness see the Torres started and going all the way from New York I'm Lasorda working through the ranks of this pitching for the pup being the fourth and Lance Robson is up in the bullpen right now for Los Angeles [Music] [Applause] - and - to Willie Randolph there's the young left-hander for the dodgers lance Robson if he's called it'll be his second appearance in the series fouled off a net this Steve [Applause] right shoulder [Applause] [Music] [Applause] see Charlie you can see that time he was sinking his fingers finger nails into the ball rivers off to he's going on - and - it goes to save right he looks a second no play throws out Red Dog Munson up even though therefore ahead this is a big situation home run with the bases loaded can overtake a four-run lead the fifth run is a very precious insurance type of run so Thurman and the Yankees want to hit now chip Thurmond jerk one here he's right back in the MVP month - you really think so well if the Dodgers should make a run and his particular effort has too many ballots are probably being cast right about this time that's fouled and I think it's fouled off Thurmond swinging to miss two strikes if the series ends tonight we will obviously visit with the victors bill white will be this they have not won yet [Applause] that is high you know Steve Yeager started reaching up and that is the ball got to the plate he just kept going down and finally to one need to chase it down it's one and two the Thurman Munson with 200 Mickey rivers at second base [Music] all gets away from Steve throws to first to get Munson and the inning is over so Charlie Hough comes in does his job gets the Yankees thrown out of the top of the eighth back with more after this word from our local state top of the eighth-inning for the Los Angeles Dodgers the top of the order Davey Lopes Billy Russell Reggie Smith Ron Cey at the 4th man if somebody should get on Mike Torrez working on a five hitter it's allowed three runs two unearned Yankees lead 73 and Perez throws a bullet in the spec bone the other Dodger orders are going to be take a strike or is is gotta throw strikes that's going to be as number one purpose right now on the mound get up the middle by Lopes base hit well that's the beginning of a restive stir in the crowd discard a vial right they've seen this Dodger team fight Bank football Russell at the plate now he is hitless in two trips he's walked once circumstance like this takes the wings off the feet of Davey Lopes though thus Russell can hit behind him Reggie Smith to the on-deck circle [Applause] - Russell right [Applause] all outside one in one Lowe's very close top of the eighth inning game number six [Applause] he went around good high fastball to Russell what's the vent it come through the strike zone see it that's the strike good call 1 & 2 the Bill Russell 2 & 2 Dodgers are not out of this yet they got their leadoff hitter on Davey Lopes this kid here Bill Russell these two guys make this offense roll and you've just missed save Garvey coming up Billy Martin looking on the Dodgers are no we're out of this know rarely out of this yet low and outside its 3 & 2 nobody out Lopes on first old count on Russell Smith on deck he walks him you might see a business with Billy Martin after this very quickly it's it to write Reggie Jackson [Applause] that's what [Applause] and here is the other wrench they should really be characterized that way not skew of the series he has had thus far [Applause] yes free home run mr. serious to here in New York inside opiate just about the same place except I think the one the first visit here the second game was longer they were both monsters deep the hole that he's hit here no he's a big strong man he can really get it out there and you saw a shot of Lasorda in the dugout exhorting his team on till it's open unless it's over he won't quit 1 1 pitch inside 2 & 1 Lopes on first one out the sort of deserves a lot of credit he had a meeting the other day with it Dodgers are down three to one call his men in said he was very proud of them each and every one of them and no matter what happened they've all had a great season fouled out of play I tell you it's fun to have a guy like Tom Lasorda in baseball he's a cheerleader that's last pitch by the way teeth 95 miles-per-hour so here in the late going Torrez is still firing he's still thrown only about probably 90 to 93 pitches he had 86 with the start of this in it there's no reason really to be tired [Applause] what first-base so the Dodgers shuffle but can't move them around they don't go play again great double fight turn by Chambliss one step in a fine throw to second base here it is another view of it good throw to second base right on the inside part of the bag a perfect throw and Jen turns it over not even close killing us got back to the bag that's a great double play two outs of the incas they need three more there will be world champions 1977 and there's their man leaving off this inning against Charlie off Reggie Jackson nine runs of the series toughest double play in baseball and they made it when they had to now listen for the ovation for Reggie Jackson as he comes up to the plate Reggie Jackson has been true distract all tonight he said of both in the seat [Applause] Oh Oh [Applause] Lotso glow [Applause] itself 75 feet you don't think they know [Applause] you're on Ashley it the whole offense magic the only other man has done in the World Series he did that's pretty splendid company to be in was not named after the babe look at it again look at turn on this pitch knuckleball on no knuckleball it was what Reggie wanted he got great extension out of his arm stand here look at it he knew it was gone a monstrous mow high above the blog at 17 foot bar deep into the empty area without spectators measure at 450 to 475 the sense of releasing fulfillment is written in his face [Applause] only one other man Babe Ruth did it twice there's the babe out that area keep open no asset size and Christian and with the plate and his two balls and no strike the fire destroyed Reggie's home in Oakland lost all of his trophies MVP world the seven all-star ring the World Series rate but he's going to have some proficient Nathan this nights over Chambliss grounds Davey Lopes second base for the first time [Applause] we can happen what magazines MVP for the 1977 World Series Reggie Jackson and while they probably didn't meet that runs I will tell on that les is still another important run to have an event metal plate gets it foul you know what I want to make him give me the car [Applause] Reggie of course a close friend of chief Jackson they worked together on ABC scoop superstar show stupid different phases that no no pun intended [Applause] the Yankee eight four three wait mrs. Ahn enough there's another man sitting close to us his name is George Steinbrenner for him equal Popo he's the man listed on getting Reggie Jackson petals pulls away and knuckle against the corner Graig strikes out [Applause] [Music] and here comes Lou Pinella I sound like a sound for us a boos do you know it is hard it is for Lou [Applause] inside all one [Applause] outside ball two the Yankees deed only three more outs they will have won in the history of this club what the first World Series Piniella fouls it all and unless the Dodgers can stage a dramatic comeback in the top of the ninth inning they will have won it with all four the stadium is absolutely alive people on their feet it's just like electricity all the history of this fall perfect they sense another world championship I give playful they know they're just free oscillation [Applause] Tom Lasorda deserves a lot of credit everything the Dodgers have done this year long seasons starts back at the February of spring training 162 games Piniella hits it in the air to the right side Garvey goes over Steve makes the catch in foul ground and but the antlers get one more living on Reggie Jackson's third success their home going to the top of the ninth daily date to three as Reggie Jackson took the field here at Yankee Stadium there was a standing ovation and I might tell you ladies and gentlemen that the vote among the writers and broadcasters Most Valuable Player Award was unanimous look at Reggie Jackson a whole long season the Eric the dugout of his manager Billy Martin went more precipitously removed him from the game late in substitution stuff and then swinging those mock swings and saying I can only answer one way that's with my back I can come through with my back and he has done just that the Oakland Raiders second time around for Reggie what a spectacular performance and if they go on to win it as it seems they will maybe it's true that this was the best team money can buy but victory hasn't come easy the Yankees live the sofa on the precipice of peril Ron Cey for the top of the ninth inning to lead off the Steve Garvey Dusty Baker and then Rick Monday if anybody should get a bowl Mike Torrez trying to go the distance for the second time in this world series Keith they had to take over as you look at that graphic not one but two teams the Red Sox in the birds say fouls it off they did that a very late going living in the American League East by two and a half games over both teams they appeared defeated by Kansas City but they rallied from a two to one deficit to a three to two games victory and they did it in the final inning of the final game so there's something inside of this team regardless of money you don't come through this way on money alone Perez mrs. Fayed it's 1 & 2 though I would still say I will Express now what mind at the beginning that this could well have been the series safe house at all the old mighty dollar versus the big Godzilla the stuff [Applause] I like a feel for both these teams he and I've been on the winning side 1969 but on a losing side in 1973 there's Frank three that's one out please Frank's down to us to go Torres two outs away from the World Championship I've been on both sides we beat the Baltimore Orioles of the New York met in 1969 I seen 73 defeated by the Oakland Athletics Reggie Jackson and right field I lost game number six they came back to beat us and game number seven but in a would let him give in a losing team there is a big span of emotions on that field if you both die guys right now for the death gets full little bit wave as he slipped get much on it urban legs it out Garvey did a good job hustling to first base he's got every reason to fold up and just take a routine out he did a good job getting there first and even though Jeff slipped almost nipped it but it was Garvey's hustle didn't loud him to just beat the throw to first which traces back to what you were saying the job the judges have done all year long the fight spirits in this club epitomizing the goatee little one time southpaw Tom Lasorda their manager may be the most spirited in the league gets it the left base hit they don't quit easy Darvey at second hold on back-to-back singles now by Garvey and think Garvey to me is also one of those people where a multi-year contract perhaps is not considered a risk at all but rather an investment in a quality man an investment is probably a show of confidence especially with his knee the way it is is the look of Rick Monday and there's the ace in the hole for the agent Sparky Lyle you need me I'm right here he said harass the Monday right [Applause] one out Garvey at second Baker at first Monday misses on the drag effort and it's two strikes on Rick and blue now have come down and assuming positions are going to try to save the vigil conditions over Monday beats afoul of the plate remember fill our pajamas pumped into the seats to win the American League clinic for the Yankees how they came roaring down on the ground lame crazy Chambliss couldn't touch the bases someone did if he had to the answer technically was no when in Japan's buy the crowd prevents it the ball has been struck out of the park no you don't have to touch all the bases to strike pitch to Rick Monday Wow back here closest we've had don't worry guys I got you covered [Applause] Oana World Series was 1962 when they beat the Giants four games to three and that one ended for the live smash that was corralled by mr. Bobby Richards and not to be forgotten moment as the Giants were threatened I'm even young enough to remember that off the batter Willie McCovey that's correct that a heck of a year himself low direct Monday word about Billy Moore the beleaguered little pepper pot all year long a man who made his share of mistakes and more as he was dead but a man who somehow with all of the controversy motivates ball play back 1 2 & 2 so the Dodgers were making Mike Torres work here in the top of the ninth inning and Chris Chambliss now comes may well have been sitting there by Billy Martin as Sparky Lyle throws hard the Yankee bullpen physics Dorking Mike they're down settle down get him out all the way big guy you've earned the privilege they pull like solid high flyball deep life back to the wall [Applause] Oh thank the devil EO thumbs up vic davalillo who was such a big man in that big win for the dodgers in philadelphia one of the venerable veterans of this game of baseball and that fortune smiled on him late December when he was pulled back from the Mexican League and was able to come back to the major league one more time and to participate in the World Series with two out of two on davalillo bunts the ball Greg nettles bear handed close to Munson and they can't get the RV at the plate and davalillo Lex it out and Dusty Baker doing exactly what Tom Seaver said the Dodgers had to do once they fell behind get the singles get the men on base then and he did that you'll remember and the final inning of the third game against Philadelphia petals fakes this part play the only play possible it could shut down the euro first but he Goods getting the runner at home but it is now 8 to 4 in this ballgame as davalillo gets a bunt single hitting for Yeager and now it's going to be Lee lacy Phillies leaving them in to pat him on the back giving him a vote of confidence and you saw earlier AG list of the fans already their legs over the outfield fence graduating they had taken the batting helmets apparently back to the locker 3 blamed every glove and every bat every helmet everything out of that dugout little bit of lift who is it big as of trees that it is get on back up here play definitely different [Applause] now he's got his helmet did this his class I need those I imagine it's since they come violent out of there I don't believe that there's going to be a whole lot of Tolerance exhibited however by the security forces because everybody has been warned beautifully that security has been quadruple they are not gonna tolerate it right guarantee you I guarantee if he did be flown over that right left for your wall it's gonna be public address announcer was remonstrating with the fans please behave Lee lacy up at the plate now with one run in for the Dodgers two out two on Mike Torres trying to go all the way here's the strike one in one Dusty Baker is second base Nick davalillo at first base one out is all they need fly ball anything all they need Hey we've traced the season [Applause] emotional and on the plane the way they think the Red Sox in numbers the way they think [Music] this the ultimate fulfillment for a controversial deeply complex and sensitive man named Reggie Jackson who first fought with three home runs and became the most valuable player in the World Series as you look better a lead Billy Martin throwing he's back and you're looking at bill white down there ready to take over as commissioner boy killed congratulate the crowd Corrigan [Music] as the clock shows 10:43 p.m. over 18 1977 for New York Los Angeles Dodgers eight to four and congratulations must be extended to to the remarkable Los Angeles Dodger organization as you look at Appetit but joyously a happy Reggie Jackson the judgment that great organization with the spirited little leader Tommy Lasorda with the front office al camp venison all the rest at with Peter O'Malley winning it fairly and fighting it out to the bitter end against the Schanke team which broke good enough to win it in the sixth I've got Billy Martin right here the champagne flows the happy man right there after all the controversy look at it alright let's go down to bill white as you heard with Billy Burke hey Billy Martin now this has been some kind of year for you you've done some kind of job keeping this ball club together fulminated right here by the 1977 championship kill there there battlers they just all you have to be the great club in Kansas City to get here they're they're a great ball club and we beat another great club in an organization when we beat the Dodgers well somebody said you ought you ought to get the Nobel Peace Prize I don't care about things like I'm just so happy for these guys that they're really great Billy earlier now you got a nice bonus and you've got a sort of a vote of confidence so how about next year for Billy Martin well next year I hope we're gonna come back and do it again our organization is starting to build get some more players and then we're gonna be awful Joe would there be any changes that Billy might Martin might want to make on this on this present Yankee you championship ballclub well I'm not that position make changes I'll make suggestions but the gaben mr. Steiner makes it changes Billy at what point at what point in this season did you feel that the Yankees might get together put it together and go on and win this thing well I plucked that right after the all-star break but we look like we're all together look like everything was put aside and we're gonna do a play a little baseball and they when they want to play baseball they can play Billy this year I think the Yankees went went to the long ball a little bit more and and it paid off here and this ball game Reggie Jackson with the three home runs that wasn't that great it was grabbed so happy for him is just great that was fantastic Billy good talking to you now we hope and we know you're gonna be back next year Billy Martin thank you put that in the summit where belongs not on top of my head yogi yogi you've been through all this before you've done such a good job with Philly and moving the outfielders we're removing the paper there's got to be a pretty good throw boy yogi slide all the other Yankee way well that's true you know all the hardships we had here they play everything everybody they were not on the field and played the ball game hey good target Thurman come in here I think I've got much that you I think like I can't see Thurman a heck of a ball a heck of a year last year most viable Claire Coleman is a current and I know as a player that the only thing anybody want is to be considered the champions of all baseball and the anchors are that this year well you know we had a lot of problems you know we were done all year and everybody's betting against there's only a lot of confusion about tell you what you know we went out to play we didn't care about names a lot and uh I just have to tell the Beavers you did it on the field right we tried now Thurman I've got to ask you a question oh yes to do because yeah we're both from Omaha and we're both black guys not let me let me ask you this do you want to go back to Cleveland are you happy here in New York um I'm not gonna answer that question I'm trying to be happier that you are happy but are you have to here you want to stay here I like baseball Moe play baseball some work I'll tell ya okay how's that all right okay Thurman very much and had a had a great year Reggie Jackson hey Reggie come on over talk to me please we got we're gonna get paint hey Reggie a heck of a heck of a game you know five home runs in a six-game series a new record for six games three home runs in one ball game and and that sort of size a guy Babe Ruth who did it quite well you know it's a great feeling I see a lot of people talking about you know great players are great feelings and I think the word that's superstars overused a lot and you played it in the era where the word really originated guys like to imagine Mays and Aaron and Minnie and I can now say that I had one day that was like those guys hey you know you saved the best for last and I think that's a test of a start well wasn't evening there's a lot of people that stuck with me and I can say that I know there's a God in heaven I'm sure and I'm I'm very very happy for myself but yeah I'm really not important you know it's just the people that stuck with me from the Commissioner's Office to to American League presidents office and in our office of course and people like Fran Healy and Gary Walker and my mother and father and people at standard brands and then Puma and there's just a lot of people to really pull for me and I'm happy right now let me let me ask you this so much has been said about Rudd what Reggie Jackson wants to do next year can you tell us what Reggie Jackson wants to do next year and what will Reggie Jackson do next year like to win in another world theory for whom Yankee all right Reggie good talking-to hey by the way I was listening to Bob broadcast on here and you are the series most viable play that second time oh thank you very much well I got a little sister that needs a car so all right hey heckle game see you next year back Reggie Jackson down here and I'm let's go down to the Commissioner of baseball Bowie Kuhn and the Commissioner will make the presentation of the world championship trophy to the members of the New York Yankees we're waiting now for George Steinbrenner and Gabe Paul and Billy Martin to come down here and Commissioner first of all that's a beautiful trophy they're the magnificent trophy and it stands for something and obviously important the championship for the world these guys really earned it hey there's a guy behind you maybe we can talk to quickly Mike Torres come on before where we give this trophy away you know we saw you came and came in into the clubhouse as the game was going on and the intensity on your face that this has to be the greatest victory here well it has to be Bill his number one and you know I thought the playoffs were the number one for me because I felt to help the club to get into the World Series and I thought even and the win in LA we went up one up but this is this is yet this has to be the number one you mentioned working with with just just three days rest and you seem to have pitched better with three days rest another four or five I'm in more command of my pitches I feel like I'm a little bit more comfortable I don't try to overthrow sometimes when I rest too long I seem that tendencies are really rare back inside of football by everybody that's not me I'm I'm used to be a try to think the ball make the guys at the ball on the ground my great game thank you Bill Mike Torres now let's get the George Steinbrenner the principal owner of the New York Yankees and I think George that the clearest of baseball has something for you that looks nice to me really here where's Billy Martin first of all congratulations George Steinbrenner I'm just I'm proud for baseball for the Yankees and for New York I'm just betting anyone it's up here bad it's been but as long as it's called me to buy this I'm sure your your more more than worth it all yeah it's great for New York just great uh Commissioner how about let's giving this great roll Philly in here where is he I think Billy Billy has somebody who's taking Billy Martin from this but Elston Howard I think he's going to congratulate no Billy Billy he gets a lot of flack but the true gentleman that is he's gone over to congratulate everybody thought Tommy Lasorda so let's give this not a Yankee owner George Steinbrenner to you to Gabe's a Billy and all the members of this great Yankee team who've earned this championship so much I'm really proud to present it to you and I pick it up and hand it to you except it's two three yeah I'm really proud of you proud of your whole club and what you've accomplished this year you're a real champion thanks Commissioner I'm just happy it back where it belongs in New York hey George boy we got to here right look let's talk a little bit George Steinbrenner thanks kipper let's talk a little bit about what you intend to do with this club this club next year I'm not gonna touch it you're gonna leave I'm not gonna touch it no how can you touch the club like this all right Laurie we're just gonna try to get them all together and we'll be back again next year all right good congratulations class now let's go back up to the booth and Keith Jackson alright bill why thank you very much and so the World Championship trophy is back in Yankee Stadium for a 21st time and there is a rule from the commissioner that we are not to go in the Dodger dressing room that losers dressing room is closed obviously we'd like to talk and pay homage and tribute to the Los Angeles Dodgers ooh that a marvelous season but we're not allowed we'll be back before after this word from our local station we're back here at Yankee Stadium as the crowd continues to mill down on the field but let's go very quickly here for a word from Don Sutton nothing too quickly down here the Dodge is some kind of valued ballclub well I think we played as well as we possibly could most of the time but we just ran in some heavy artillery tonight and the man in right field starts hitting rockets out of there we're all in trouble nothing to be ashamed about no I think we played well we had a good time there's no shame to be beat by a great ballclub hey shows what kind of person you are over here congratulating it I admire good performances even if part of it is against us I think you guys did a heck of a job Thank You Don said now let's go back up again to the booth all right bill let's closing notes from Howard Cosell and Tom C I think Sutton put it very well the Yankees have proved to be an exceptional ballclub they won when they had two against whomever they had two nothing more than that to him well I've been on both sides of it like I said before and it's really thrilling sterling to be here in Yankee Stadium this place is just reeking with history and I think both teams can be very proud of themselves and baseball has had a super year and I'm just glad to see it all glad to have had you with us Tom good luck to you next year the Cincinnati Reds thank you and so it's a night of celebration in the Big Apple as the Yankees defeat the Dodgers four games to two the deciding game final score the Yankees eight Dodgers for the executive producer of the 1977 World Series Roone Arledge coverage of Jerry Klein and here a lot of fine people who did a great job and we're proud of [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Yankee Stadium Tuesday evening October 18 in the top of the first two runners on on the basis of a walk and an error Steve Garvey drove the ball into the right-field corner Reggie Smith as jackson chased the ball ron cey round the third base there would be steamed into third the Dodgers had two runs and a two nothing first inning Lee Burt Hooten got the Yankees out in order in the first but in the bottom of the second he issued a leadoff walk to Reggie Jackson then the 2 1 pitch to Chris Chambliss [Applause] chambliss dug it out of the bottom half of the strike zone and drove it into the right-field seats a home run that tied it up at two to two a moment of jubilation for the 56,000 [Music] they would have more to rejoice about before the [Applause] in the top of the third Reggie Smith answered for Los Angeles this drive into the right-field seats Smith's third home run of the series but the Dodgers backed out on top read it to who would be the most valuable player of the 77 series would it be Smith or Garvey they're bats we're keeping the Dodgers alive would it be this man Thurman Munson he did a great job of handling the Yankee pitchers he drove this single into left field in the bottom of the fourth to put the tying run on base for New York first pitch to Reggie Jackson crushed into the right-field seats his third home run of the series and now the New Yorkers the Yankees would go on to score another run in the before thinning to make it 5-3 New York Thurman Munson smiling at Reggie Jackson and what must have seemed to Yankee fans a very symbolic moment then in the bottom of the fifth Mickey rivers the leadoff Yankee hitter batting against alias Sosa in the game for Los Angeles the single into right centerfield past Davey Lopes once again New York had a baserunner two batters later Randolph having replaced rivers at first base on the fielder's choice once again the first pitch Reggie Jackson tied a World Series record with his fourth home run of the series this one made at 7 3 New York and suddenly Yankee fans could smell their first World Championship in 16 years Reggie Jackson number 44 who had survived the season of turmoil and trouble with the Yankees [Applause] one more time over the 417 foot in the cedar field on the first pitch from Charlie huh but fifth home run of the World Series for Jackson a brand-new series record eight three New York was all celebration from here [Music] one man and ever before hit three home Oh Series game his name was Babe Ruth [Music] and for Reggie Jackson it was a series and an evening of vindication he had struggled with teammate Thurman Munson before they reached understanding late he had struggled with manager Billy Martin before they reached understanding during this world series and he had stood them for a while with Yankee fans in the jubilation at this moment and of this evening it's brought back to Yankee Stadium not one in so long a world championship another complete-game victory and the tremendous accomplishment Reggie Jackson through the rejoicing Yankee fans another great athletic achievement for Jackson but nothing like the five homeruns that had given New York a world championship [Applause]
