starting in left field for the New York Yankees tonight number 6 Roy white as we set the Yankee defense for the top of the first inning in centerfield for New York the flyer Nikki rivers over in right field the left-hander Oscar gimble number 23 at third base the American League home run champion number 9 Greg Nettles at shortstop number 11 Fred Stanley who's been outstanding in this championship series at second base for the New York Yankees number 30 Willie Randolph at first base for the Yankees power hitter Chris Chambliss catching tonight for New York will be Thurman Munson number 15 and doing the pitching right-hander ed Figueroa who was the loser in Sunday's ballgame but had a fine season 19 and 10 Keith Jackson along with Howard Cosell and Reggie Jackson and don't you love it when it gets down to the nub everything is up for grabs tonight as our Cowen steps in for Kansas City to leadoff he'll be followed by Tom Poquette and George Brett and John Maybury would be the fourth hitter if someone should get on the temperature heading toward is tonight in New York City and here is the first pitch of the final the American League pennant if the Yankees win tonight it'll be the 30th pennant for New York if Kansas City wins it'll be the first ever for a ballclub that is just finishing its eighth season on the spectrum on the outside corner and lo with his second fish the first pitch was night away the second pitch was really a homer on the outside corner fix it fix this one a little low they asked as to whether or not he tipped the ball thurman munson obviously indicating that he thinks that he did the plate umpire for tonight's game is the veteran art Prince the stadium is capacity better than 58,000 standing room only Keith place is exciting we're high this is it by the way I thought I heard a tick two and one am I on the air the right side for Randolph the first base umpire tonight is Larry McCoy Joe Cleveland is the second Larry Barnett it third down the right-field line bill how are the left field line it's George Maloney the batter now for the Kansas City Royals number two man in the order of Tom okay well we're off with a bang tonight a guy can make a big big day for himself tonight everything is magnified everything under a microscope tonight you hit a home run tonight they will for sure be heard around 231 on the series any left-handed pulls it sharply foul on the right side it's out of play Praeger Oh his whole job tonight Keith as you know to keep the ball down he was high in his last out and we have seen this Kansas City ballclub that is very quick to jump on the pitches that are high and today is his there its 28th birthday he wanted desperately to be the first point of he can pitcher [Music] Juan Pizarro from Puerto Rico 1:19 one year at pickle or finish this season for the Yankees of nineteen in ten I think if he wins this ballgame it'll sure overcome the disappointment for him 20 minute late I would think so if two shots at him against Boston and Baltimore failed had a third shot coming up final day of the season rain down the RPO swings a little bit a little bit away and George Brett here 333 to win the American League batting championship is waiting in the on deck circle and he has done very well against ed Figueroa in his career one two pitch foul it holds at one two there was a sprinkle of rain across the city late this afternoon but it's blown away the wind has been up and down but doesn't seem to be a particular factor at this point the black for just a moment comes up but most of the evening it's been hanging rather limply 1 & 2 pitch you say there was a time when the on deck hitter had a pretty good series against him are pretty good time against Figueroa he got 13 straight hits at one point the pitch is high 54 degrees at 8:30 tonight the wind gusting 1520 out of the Northwest the configuration however of the newly redesigned Yankee Stadium I think has changed the wind pattern somewhat - and - to focus back here this little guy has been a tough out the whole series he's almost played a lot better than people have expected but what do you expect from a guy he's hit 300 all year and he's doing a little bit better than that right this series they've been a pleasant pleasant surprise from sure all the people around the country not a surprise for the Kansas City Royals because they know what he can do to to pitch to Poquette [Applause] that is the kind of pitch Figueroa will have to achieve all night keep the ball down I think you can tell to that Figueroa is adrenaline is flowing a little bit because here in the top of the first inning of the ballgame he has been tied with our drugs radar gun at roughly 92 miles an hour on the best ball there's no question about it with you said Howard he's got to make good pitches tonight he's had some rough times over the last couple of weeks of the season obviously had a rough time Sunday he needs to come back with a good outing tonight for the obvious reason of winning the pennant taking it all got to make good pitches tonight the pitch to George Brett for one George Brett against Figueroa of in 1976 3 for 9 but over the seasons six-six-six fouled away and this Reggie suggested it went 12 out of 14 there's Whitey Herzog face apparently quizzical on the surface but a man who's deeply tense tonight you better believe as is Billy Martin no there he is no difference between good work said 40 oh it's 2 and 1/2 Brett it just has to be that big Aurora early in the ballgame will try to be very careful with Brett who has been a successful phone it has been the pattern in the series for Kansas City to jump on top as a the second game on Sunday off the mask for Thurman Munson there's no question about it we instead of before and we can say it again I guess you've been watch throughout the evening as ABC has coined the phrase the thrill of agony it's real thrill of victory the agony of peak will see it all here tonight to see it working very very cautious you can't say how much is riding on the ball you can't say a guy takes too much time or is being too fidgety or being too fussed because with - Pizza breath outside I think wretched little tight I feel like a planet ball game huh oh yeah I've got to like it when it gets down to the last one though here's where you have your most fun here's where the extraordinary becomes ordinary this folder I feel base hit for George Brett and he continues to wear out Figueroa ads off the wall and Brett goes into second standing for the double he really knows got that right they might be related I know that he's from Puerto Rico George Preston California but the way he has said he just might own it all right Brett perched at second base in the matter now is Big John Mayberry in the Kansas City of first baseman who is struggling in the closing hours of this 1976 season two for 14 and one run batted in in the championship series hitting 143 this is your guy Keith you know what he can do he can rip a ballgame open I pop left side it may carry beyond the playing surface and it does it's a souvenir a lot of success against Figueroa is to 419 against bigger owners career for an average of 105 and has never never never homered off with him however he's got a flair for the dramatic it's three times this year he knocked into five runs in fact one up with Augusta fallible he just missed a grand slam yesterday by about four feet down the right-field line George Brett is off second base we look in from centerfield and the pitch is high and away you can see again they're staying away from it it really doesn't have to make give Mayberry a good ball to hit he has first base open and a right-handed hitter on deck so he doesn't have to come up with anything too juicy and I'm sure that he won't if he doesn't have to hit people right [Applause] [Music] we have a perfect situation a perfect example of that right-field fence he hung a curveball to John Mayberry he got it up in the air and normally for any other ballpark in the major leagues except maybe Detroit that ball is this is why you have to be so cautious maybe he should have got a pitch to him in this situation you shouldn't give a pitch to hit maybe they should intentionally give it him a walk put him on first base and pitch to the right-handed hitter with the big left field here thanks the first home run since August 14 by Barry that's exactly right and the guy who's now on the spot in the minds of every baseball fan this country is Billy Moore because the whole question was should he start Figueroa who has never had success against Kansas City where at 1 in 1 Keith on Hal McRae who is playing right field tonight McRae broke out of his slump in the series yesterday with a double and a triple so the two big men in the Kansas City order now are showing some power as McRae fouls it back to make the count 1 & 2 it is so important for Kansas City to have their big man Mayberry get the long ball you just cannot measure the impact of it you can't is tough to reiterate he makes the pitcher pitch differently to everyone in the lineup we in a Miss by Hal McRae on a curveball but ed figueroa is timid as Bret doubles Mayberry homers and Kansas City gets a 2 nothing lead in the top of the first behind the plate for Kansas City it's buck martinis at on the mound a power pitcher hard throwing at Dennis a Leonard Leonard on the Year 17 and 11 he was not however successful in his outing against the Yankees in his first start of the championship series Kansas City to back up the note are we made earlier on getting out in front in game number two they scored twice in the first inning game number three this for three times in the first inning they've known before they struck for three runs in the second inning and tonight they have two of the first so it does not always indicate victory for them obviously because they come to this final game all even at 2 & 2 leading off for the New York Yankees it is Mickey rivers at the top of the order the center fielder batting second in his Roy white and then Thurman Munson will hit third with Chris Chambliss cleaning up I think we should make note of the fact that Nicky rivers what we both feel keep on the catalyst is both offensively it has not been on based Atmos he's only for 418 all right Reggie Jackson the pitch is fouled away into the upper deck by Mickey rivers for strike one as Dennis Leonard ducked the ball where he needs to keep it when he's throwing the fastball that's outside to this youngster Mickey can't pull it there's the breaking pitch now this is the secret for Dennis Leonard the pitching coach for the Kansas City Royals told you before the ballgame Galen Cisco that Dennis has to get the breaking pitch over otherwise he'll be gone [Applause] okay puss in trouble immediately he knew the ball was going much deeper than he expected he turned the wrong way let's look at it again here's a breaking ball on the outside part of the plate rivers hits the ball a lot further than can be anticipated not a power hitter there you see it way out there by the 387 foot mark Roget does the best job we possibly can ball hit overhead knee just can't get to it rivers can fly and there you see stand-up triple Keith and immediately paul splittorf gets up in the Kansas City bullpen the left-hander who is known as a Yankee killer so effective looking good Roy white a switch hitter and the left fielder said before we'll say it again it means this much Mickey rivers the catalyst the offensive catalyst of that Yankee ballclub the infield was back there you see the fastball white making contact they've almost given the New York Yankees a run right here as you see the infield is back just trying to get it out go play hit the pot X right he tries to make the big long throw white runs pretty well get man berry an assist give him a little credit for keeping that ball from going into the right field speak when they bury you can sometimes nonchalant this as good as any first base Quantic played it perfectly but white the swift-footed left-handed hitter cut down quickly now let's take a look in isolation on Mickey rivers running home on the plate as Reggie told you the infield was playing back giving up a run with a two-run lead and that's pro forma as Ricky a Mickey looking back and scoring the first tally for the game so we got a 2-1 ballgame men on first bottom of the first nobody out yet they barring having homeand with one on in case you just joined this in the first inning Brett had doubled with two out good on is in the bullpen getting ready in a hurry Dennis Leonard has had the conference with Whitey Herzog and his catcher buck Martinez and the victory about Dennis Leonard is read you noted earlier he's an emotional person very much so food mostly kind of a guy he said he was going to go out and just give it all he had in fact they do he's an emotional guy he didn't know he was bitching until a new ballpark today they didn't want to let him sleep on it because we probably wouldn't have been able to sleep on Thurman Munson keep 389 hitter the Yankees have 12 doubles in this series in for game 2 2 1 first to keep Roy white close both teams down with two baseships nobody out for New York run home and white on first stop play balloon on field let's become role of thumb here at Yankee Stadium the Yankees have an electrically excited group of fans all year long standing room only house tonight we may be over 58,000 people [Applause] he's going to go right at him as you see I'm sure they went out had a conference in the mountain told him just settle down and relax as we stated before we'll say to get it again because we feel it's important it is important he's an emotional guy that great ability great talent in control sure that's what they said my wife Constance brings in this his martinis my wife Martinez never had a chance aerial picture it's a good jump in Texas plans like he's supposed to see Patek with the excellent position again no chance 20 make a tag marketers have little trouble finding the handle still nobody up for New York bottom of the first inning 2 to 1 ballgame and right up the turn with Munson up 1 & 1 we've got no house and I'm sure that Berman if he's going to get a base hit will try to get it to right field so if he does they're not getting it he'll advance the runner by hitting the ball the right side of the infield there you see him try sweet late try to advance that runner that's the name of the game get that man over there with one out or less than two outs we have the opportunity to score with an era a ground ball or a flyball one in to count down on the Yankee catcher as Dennis Leonard trying to weather a first-inning storm split horn is active in the Kansas City bullpen [Applause] On June 17 they mark the spending of the Yankee dugout popped up right side foul you looked at Billy Martin the face is tense why not the biggest thing in his life it should be and you will see next inning moment there's a sign of faltering further by Figueroa Martin here to our powers toward right center giving him left center Biggers and back knows he's flying to hit but instead he goes to the hole and pulls up the left base hit here from holding appeared as the floor it's intelligent baserunning we pointed out yesterday that Munson while not the swiftest man it's relatively clean from Kenneth Leonard is going out right now Herzog's not going to live with this any longer second time the Yankees have done away with Leonard second time Leonard's had a two-run lead first time he lost it it was three to two and split-off came on now it's still two to one but then on second and third and none out and Munson then played exceptionally smart if chris chambliss coming up as the next hitter he is a left-handed hitter that means it is time to bring the left-hander in from the bullpen paul splittorf i bring splittorf in right now the left-handed pitcher to face the almost entirely left-handed hitter Yankee lineup well it forces good of Marcus Han for your question about it he's gone on and put his left-handed hitters in Carlos may Oscar gamble and of course now whitey has left-handed pitcher coming in to throw to those guys for at least the next two or three at-bats if he uses the other fellas Lou Piniella and Elliott Maddox he gets a chance to use up Billy Martin's two left-handed pitchers already right-handed pinch hitters I should say I got it all fouled up hey I'm the services they are it happens so now here is Paul split off into the ballgame is Whitey Herzog goes back splittorf was an outstanding performer in the first part of the season when Kansas City ran off to a big lead in the American League Western Division he finished the year 11 and 8 after tearing the sheet then hit the index finger of his left hand and it took him a very long time to get over to a small little injury but when a pitcher depends and almost entirely totally disabling injury to a pitcher so they had to as we pointed out on Sunday night sent back to the instructional league and then on the Hope and Paul said suddenly I began to feel well again the tendinitis you've described on the finger and the hope that Paul was right he was well I brought him back worked him the last day of the season against Minnesota he did not impress but the documented record is clear this guy is a Yankee nemesis the Yankee history has had a number of nemesis once there was a pitcher with Detroit a good little right-handed named Frank Larry all he had to do was throw his glove out in the mound guard mother Yankees split off was the winning pitcher on Sunday night 5 and 2/3 innings no earned runs he worked for full inning struck out one and walked two he gets an early call on the bottom off the first inning and he will be pitching now with nobody out to Chris endless Carlos may unless we get a change there and break Nettles all three left-handed hitters Roy white is at very base for New York and Thurman Munson is it second base one run in nobody out the pitch is very high at the Kindle this six one 210 pounds of there is third and remember what we've told you about Chambliss his ability to hit left-handers monsoon up at second there pitched universes hit into left that should score white he's quick the throw from Poquette is 2/3 [Applause] [Music] let's get the back even in a hurry Figaro has got a fresh start it's nothing to nothing again and let's start over we've now got eight and a half innings to play eight to third boy white in the dugout Thurman Munson perched out at second base you've got one out on the sacrifice fly by Chris Chambliss and Billy Martin is gonna let Carlos May he's got a letter hit for a couple of times at least Billy Martin does keys right with the fact that he'll completely wasting if he goes into pinch-hit for him right now [Applause] two four six in the championship series before games we play note how far up the Batman told me don't sway up on it and here's the pitch from split off right waiting on deck Greg Nettles remember may always looks almost by habit by ritual and a couple of pitches let's strike one pitch from splittorff swing into this one strike two at time is one on the second that one did they really looked at it Thurman Munson at second base with one out [Applause] face rerun of the science from buck Martinez as splittorff checks at second Munson off-pitch to may popped up on the left side out of play Whitey Herzog did not start split off because he knows his pit sparingly over the latter half of the season because of the injury that Keith described now he finds himself in the position of having to put Paul in when he didn't think he could go a full game in the very first inning no one none out when ball came on one cannot reasonably expect despite the Nemesis factor that ball will be able to go all the way maybe six in much foul two strikes mark I wonder what he's thinking right now [Applause] I can't help you [Applause] [Music] and the two strike pitch get out into left-center field al Cowen's coming up makes the one-handed catch Munson retreats to the bag at second you've got two down [Applause] come on him doing the job got to retire ain't a good fish right there with this I could see that book Martinez was sitting outside split or hit the myth he got the fly ball he got the two outs and here's the home run king Greg Nettles and 32 in the regular-season Jackson at 27 Reggie got a late start that's true he did remarkable mr. nettles high inside ball one one of great nettles home runs here at Yankee Stadium a high fly ball as you look at his stance but the second shot he hit was exactly that a bullet rifled it into the seats playing with a very sore right ankle and she's outside probic the second Munson's back you know expect to see those kind of chances taken right there but the guys even though there's a great deal of pressure on the game they're going on and playing it the way it should be let's look at nettles ankle yeah protective yes right that right there comes from fouling a lot of balls off on the instep of his foot just a little protection almost always the front foot to it no question about it it comes from being a pull hitter trying to get a bat out in front to see if you can reach that little short porch where the big payoff is do you hit yourself much there's Oscar gamble on deck keep told you about him 17 homers on the year was a very important cog in this Yankee machine as they won the Eastern Division in the American was Alaska play as soon as you got here right and to get rid of that hat Munson on second Keith to in one pitch now it'll pop left side might be a play on it attack together okay short left down the line makes the catch the inning is over so the Yankees and the Royals after one complete it in a play in game number five all even at 2-2 with the score even that - - we go to the top of the second inning for Kansas City Jamie quirk the designated hitter cookie Rojas the second baseman and Fred Patek the shortstop getting toward the bottom part of Nick in the city order and it was the bottom two-thirds of that Kansas City magic water yesterday that did all of it any port a triple yesterday and two runs batted in he scored himself and he hits him dirt down the right side Wow yes he did and that's not the way to start off an inning Eddie go back and rub that ball up spit in that hand and rub it down and in and out he's to the ball maybe he's still remembering that hanging Derby through to Mayberry dreadful pitch she talked to the ball fouled off the other way if ball was not doing nice things so quick now the youngster out of Whittier California [Applause] with a two strike count [Music] leading off for Kansas City top the second inning takes high stop Willa got to keep that ball down if he wants to stay alive much longer there you see Thurman Munson telling Eddie Figueroa to follow through on the ball he's been leaving the ball up high and not following through quite well enough enough for Thurman he's telling the throw this ball up right here missed the target keep Edmond was inside at the knees it's 2 & 2 it's team Thurman trying to give him direction on a ball and he's not getting the ball where Thurman would like it to be he called for that ball to be up right there in the ball with inside and about hi hi I'll dock count homes to to there's cookie at 37 years of age he was a very important figure yesterday in the victory for Kansas City he's also very steadying influence defensively always hit the left-field Roy white circles over makes the gun ball was hit hard it was you swear he wanted to see Thurman call for the temple to keep the ball away turn the ball over so it'll sink gotta where he wanted to and quirt hit it where he wants to right on the button now the batter is cookie Rojas you noticed when he was introduced if you were with us for the introduction of the players had a lollipop in his mouth says its energy also something that you want before the anxiety gets you down Louise is the fastball in for a strike ball he also watches telly savalas 88 miles an hour on the fastball the sport is all even have to to here at the top of the second inning it's now one in one to cookie Rojas program an exclusive presentation of ABC Sports let's pause five seconds to allow our local stations to identify themselves if Jackson Howard Cosell and Reggie Jackson sitting here in the booth overlooking the field of play at Yankee Stadium in the final game the game that means the American League pennant the chance if you can call it that to go play the Cincinnati Reds in the world miss Rojas delivers it up the middle base hit for cookie so cookie Rojas picks up his third hit in six trips he's hit and even 500 definitely doing the job that they asked him to do I put him in the lineup they were looking for some leadership some stability and he sure is providing it 37 years old you can call it all if you want to but when I get to 37 I sure hope I don't feel like I'm old I hope I can feel like I could play baseball if I want to they called a bowl but thirty-sevens not all is it guys we told you yesterday it was a very good year I like hearing it you're not that far away reading to look forward to and something for us to look back on I suppose here is fred partek now the joy stop for Kansas City and fred partek having a good series six hits 14 at-bats he has four runs batted in he's been outstanding defensively by for a hundred and forty-four pounds for one account [Applause] breaking pitch was in Freddy played last year and up in the 60s he lost 20 pounds at the suggestion of his manager Whitey Herzog and whitey checks him once a week and for every pound over 145 it costs him $100 just in case you don't know what that means home plate is edged in black and if you can get the ball in that area you've got a pretty bare face a little perimeter about an inch wide that goes around the whole plate when you're doing that you are what we call a baseball dealer one into a pitch to Patek is high 2 & 2 you're in charge cookie Rojas is on first you've got one out Burke is gone but Burke hit it hard it's kind of versatility this guy with two out now Rojas off second base and the midst of our partners I was introduced to originally as Martinez Reggie Jackson's middle name spelled the same way pronounce Martinez Reggie's been calling him buck Martinez but on how many years but now we're told that the absolute correctness of the pronunciation is Martinez I feel they said pretty dude all gets away and buckle head for second cookie scores bucks safe at second it's a 3-2 ballgame I think I'm just going to call him buck from now on because my middle name is bar Tina's I don't know what to call it there you see buck go with the pitch quite well all outside gamble charges the fall it doesn't take a bad hop he just kicks the ball bounces off over to his right here comes Mickey rivers makes us throw in a second but bucks in with a sliding double to things thus the importance of road rojas getting the second and secondly martinez or Martinez as we will now call him in accordance with owner ewing Goffman's dictates martinez a hidden hero in this series many key hits al Cowen's top of the order is up there it is officially a single for Martinez and an error the right fielder Oscar gamble and action in the Yankee bullpen as expected strike one at one you know we've got two nice men to bullpen but I don't know if it's that as expected Howard because it's grant Jackson and everybody's still wondering where any possible there's off second base with a big lead over the man Rando has it first and the inning is over but the Kansas City royal regained the lead here at the top of the second inning after one and a half lead the Yankees three two he gave his lollipop to cookie Rojas for the evil Telly Savalas the only one not yul brenner but telly savalas [Applause] otice number 80 Oakland Raiders bottom due to the order now for the Yankees Oscar gamble Willie Randolph and Fred Stanley as we go to the bottom of the second and I'll guarantee you if that would have gone into the crowd somebody that some sore fingers did I say a v60 in the end of the hour keep all split off and his Leonard pitch to three hitters have burned to the success of splittorf was summoned and he did the job and it's now two strikes on Oscar gamble as Oscar looks at a breaking pitch and it's in on the corner let's make note of the fact he's come on he's pitched well already he started the set of pattern starting to get in a groove that was high and away one and two they've got to stop before he gets going one ball and two strikes you see him getting the pitch get it to Owen - and they'll go away with a bad fish cardinal rule don't give up a base hit with two strikes and no balls just missed two and two Oscar gamble he represents home run power let's make note if he comes back into the strike zone now he's got things working for on the outside corner strike three for one out I'd have it going you see a guy said a pattern like that it makes a couple of pitches gets a couple of good strikes and he tries to get the hitter to go after a fan pitch to see if we're swinging a bad ball why getting a good pitch when you have things going when you want to come back and you have the ability to make a good pitch like that you're in great shape Willie Randolph takes the best ball down the fight like one call will into 4:14 and run batted in and he didn't like it either he didn't like that call [Applause] what if one [Applause] two and one the door pitching fine sorry I'm strikeout game over test of all on the plate our trench the plate umpire two in one pitch popped up not in this short right coming over al McCrae staggers a little bit but they did get Vince the designated hitter playing the outfield playing a new position he hasn't played a lot of defense all year long due to the injury to Amos Otis out with the ankle injury after the first ballgame he's got a forced to play the outfield now because whitey is trying to get as much offense into the ballgame as possible consequently death making the designated hitter Jamie quirk Keith Fred Stanley Yankee shortstop ninth hitter in the order makes it a little high or 1 2 out nobody on Kansas City leading three two bottom of the second inning a championship series there's a strike gets one in one and I'll tell you this little it looks very quick he is firing the ball is totally confident against this particular ballclub his only question will be stamina because one goes by what's happening in the fence just low it's 2 & 1 we tied him at 90 miles an hour on the fastball incidentally we had Ellie Howard hit some one bouncers on the infield at Kansas City and here at Yankee Stadium to give you some difference between artificial perfectly or grass we'll define that later bouncer to Brett at third base George's through on Milani friends Fred Stanley is out they hitting is over the Yankees gone in order after two complete innings of play it's Kansas City 3 New York 2 for the Kansas City Royals at the top of the 3rd inning it's Tom Poquette George Brett and John Mayberry to finish the story on the astroturf for the parting turf or whatever the artificial surface might be Ellie Howard hit a bunch of ground balls the other day in Kansas City we took the jugs radar gun and he came to Yankee Stadium and hit 20 ground balls same stroke certainly not a scientific measurement but the difference the artificial turf is roughly eight miles an hour faster than real breasts and to see if we can go a little bit further we've had Figueroa clock tonight one time at 92 miles an hour and then we've seen Nolan Ryan the fastest pitcher in the game at right around 100 that's an eight mile an hour difference Oh okay fine I made a good play on you know Keith we asked many of the members of the Cincinnati Reds whom they would most want to play against in the World Series and why and during the course of this contest you're going to be meeting many of the Cincinnati Reds guys like every feed Rose slugging George Foster and the rest of that awesome bunch including Johnny Bench and you'll hear from them now here's the man that figures he owns Figueroa George Brett hitting 467 in the championship series he's at bat here in the top of the third he doubled off Figueroa and scored a run in the first inning fouls this one over the left side out of play two went in there first pitch with a changeup then came back and just saw Munson twist his hand a little bit turn the ball over try to keep the ball away from Brett there's really no way to pitch Brett however in this ballpark who's got to stay away from him because he can still turn that ball and hit that ball in right field bleachers and away he's hit ed Figueroa Figueroa is gonna be careful when out nobody on this boquete tried to bunt was thrown off by the pitcher [Music] the meantime Figueroa has given up four hits in three runs and two and a third innings and therefore action continues in the Yankee Bolton Fred Jackson warming up left-hander 1 into 2 Brett Wow Big John Mayberry on deck two run home run first inning your man Keith [Music] well your baseball you talk talk talk and talk about the law of averages and when you're that big and that strong to stick in your hand sooner or later something gonna happen [Applause] 1 & 2 flyball into centerfield for Mickey rivers [Applause] this game telecast under television rights granted by Major League Baseball solely for the entertainment audience any publication reproduction retransmission or other use of the pictures descriptions and accounts of the game but I'll be explicit with the consent of Major League Baseball prohibited any commercial or other use of the program such as charging admission for showing similarly prohibited to our faces Queen Babe area goes well away all one well he knows what he can do to him he's gonna establish the fact he's going to try to stay away from him and I'm sure that they've told him in the dugout last inning that they've had great success with Mayberry by keeping the ball away from him not like that hard shot to right valerian das Neves falls down throws gets in so the defensive shift by the New York Yankees pays off as Maybury it's it hard to render a Kansas City Royals court order half its three two rolls home I do like to play edition flip the Yankees in the World Series ever since I was a little kid whenever you think the World Series I think of the New York Yankees and also firstly I would because I feel that I know their pitching staff and I'm not in point I can hit their pitching staff but I personally feel more comfortable guiding all the pictures that I face before and I faced hunter off base hose when I faced door Alexander grant Jackson and it's always like that so you know I would feel more careful by facing the Yankees although he can't say fireball comments of the man who made la popping and stealing bases fashionable the syphilis preppy leader of the Cincinnati Reds Pete Rose the better now for the New York Yankees as we go to the top of the order is Mickey rivers Roy white will follow and then comes Thurman Munson [Applause] World Series opens on Saturday and Mickey rivers who hit a triple to leadoff for New York and scored a run in the bottom of the first inning fouls it away and P DS audio Keith wasn't that distinct he wants to play the game as you could have been there Mickey rivers with a 341 meeting average against paul splittorf is having a big night I've tripled in a single of 250 the plate thought I'd be leading off for the Yankees he makes them go always hit 351 over for his career so I'm sure we'll see some action down there by rivers really run really get something going I'm sure he will you get a guy like that on the bases makes things happen got all kinds of movement happened the catch was thinking about making the good throw he takes it distracts from the concentration of the fish [Applause] the left-hander should be able to keep them a little bit closer to the bag a very hose against my wife slides up to that panel is it too much and moved him up towards second base close it back and takes ball one Elston Howard is the coach at first or New York and Dick Howser is the coach after we've got it now [Applause] New York at bat bottom of the third inning zip office retired and he makes it easy throat keep making clothes with thurman munson waiting in the on deck circle the big Yankee captain in cutter boy I'm quite a switch hitter outside got to get this runner over to second base get him into scoring position seen all kinds of things happening out there you your outfielders are wondering what to do with the ball getting it in their minds what to do with it if he hit the ball the outfield where the fourth because rivers got five we're gonna see some action on base he does not go in there for a strike two and one mr. prising two balls and no strikes and he takes the ball that's the time when you can just about crank up and let it fly that or a ranking venture you've got a chance to lay it down nice soft stroke I think Billy Martin a little bit disturbed aloy didn't put that one down if the bond is in fact in Paul apparently it has one [Music] [Applause] the inside their knavery having to stretch it as Whitey Herzog on the dock [Applause] trying to keep him close just to see if thinking take that one extra step away from him just may keep them from going to third baseman a base hit I helped him get a double play on second base because as you said before you can't say that the ground that one's Heine ways to throw to first derivative a check in state now it's very obvious the attention that Mickey rivers is drawn rolls over the first base rows from the catcher excitement from the crowd from the crowd he just turns everybody on turns on the action thanks things read one to wait outside ball four there you go take a little concentration away start because he was sailing along now with nobody out you've got Nicky's at second and first and both of them can really run rivers and white Thurman Munson power at the plate this is really the first time that split-off has been in trouble against the Yankees in two hours now let's see how he reacts remember his pits but sparingly this year at least the last half of the year Munson hit a home run off splittorf earlier in the season the only hit that he had off the guitar now you have Esther and Pat both growing can't just get a vote man nobody out rivers on second my [Applause] [Music] that's why so is the area [Applause] [Music] maybe running into a few problems we're going to get a little confidence right now Galen Cisco having some problems right now try to get them back on the track take a little false teeth but pull back to the man he's been the bitching goats at Kansas City for six seasons walking out to George Brett obviously the presence of Mickey rivers on bass a disturbing influence on splittorff as Andy Husker goes hard of the bullpen along with Marty Pattin has not pitched in the series neither was Elvis Morris asked for hands there they are left-hander is Hester well if split off has to go and that remains to be seen and as probably Herzog will want to go into southpaw keep that sound bar line up in the Yankees nothing and as effective against southpaws as against right-handers all year long tendency to agree with you Howard even though he's pitched he pitched here Monday Tuesday rather [Applause] mutters edge off the pitch to Munson much foul down the first base side oh thanks are hot well we'll see about that Thurman trying to hit to right behind the runners Renzi expounded on that who Thurman's early on time it back men on first and second right now nobody out let's get him into scoring position 105 RBIs he's been the chauffeur at home second second pitch to Munson get down the right side just pow [Applause] I know the feeling how that grade I've been in rice field myself too I was hoping that ball would go foul too if I'd have been out there I'm right with you big guy McCrae likes the move on that ball if it's fair he makes the catch rivers would be sitting on third possibly white also because how does not throw real wealthy nobody out and it's pointing to fouled off again over the right side back in the sermons still trying to manipulate that back hips a right field splits off is an interesting kid to study Reggie when he's on the mound with those specs seemingly squinting even through them to catch the sign seriously right look out Herman Munson one two the third-base side out of play and Mickey rivers way down the line headed toward third suddenly Paul was low on inside that convey a terribly dangerous fits for Thurman Munson he's a pretty good hitter well not a but a great hitter so he's got to pitch him tough he's got a 476 lifetime average against Paul get off last time he's two for three often mysterious he's got to be careful get that one extra step and keep him from getting the extra tip it may mean the difference in scoring a run or not no one in the outfield will be through the Royals has a great arm and boy that many guys can put the pressure on to make a living straight out [Applause] here comes Mickey rivers he was for the Foley [Applause] [Music] for the Yankees they've done it all year long that's true [Applause] he's being heavily considered for the most is an exceptional player Keith and the big thing here is that they've broken through against little the guy who is plate now confetti Bing the game as they sanitation for the penis before that guess closing seconds of a ball game basketball game give the ball at Jerry West give it to Rick Perry and you're in a hockey game get it to Bobby or you're in a baseball game the guys on the bench look for the big guys and I guess that's why that some of the salaries are inflated or whatever you want to say but one day I kneel on the line when the funny is on the line respective get it for the big guy and the big guys want to be there in those situations Thank You Howard put it on the table they're out of the bullpen in the city Royal body bet happiness mr. Christian was the Yankee first baseman [Applause] take note of the in feel the way it sits right now they're back in DoublePlay depth depth ground ball to the second baseman shortstop and they won't have a play at Roy white at the plate they're conceding a run see if they can get the [Applause] [Music] and is fitting for the knees here at the bottom of the third inning where I try to pitch chambliss up and see if he can get a pop up he missed the ball anywhere unless his first or third they're going to give up a run one in one count on Chris foul back it's one and two you get a swellow a little hard chambliss up high though because even lose there's more white sitting at third-base representing the boy head Thurman Munson is over at first base nobody out a tough situation on here what makes men and what makes brocro go action he's got no choice got to try to distract them out and pop them up and the way to do it is by pitching him up what we have here in the bottom of the third inning is a rerun or what happened to the bottom of the first [Applause] more for cookie Rojas they've got a second gift run the run white scores Nikki's leave for three [Applause] see what kind of five thurman munson came up with as I said they've been given a run up going in the home going after the double play trying to get to ass they believe they're going to score more runs this ball game it's wrote a second and there's motion didn't quite see it but he took pot back out of the play and caused the bad throw job by Mather nice nice job by Munson another little thing that's not shown in the score book breakup that double play now only one out instead of two and here's Paulo Spanky [Applause] runs five hits of error for the Yankees three months conviction harvest for Kansas City Incas are cookin here in the bottom of the third of May hits a high flyball into centerfield al Cowen's drifting in that has the second out of the inning Chris Chambliss comes back the first having been aboard safely [Music] [Applause] New York won the opener for one Kansas City came back 73 in New York five grade in Kansas City 7-pole and this is the final game in the best-of-five championship series the batter will be great Nettles all split off steps off the pitching rubber as hell McRae is doing some cleaning up out in right field [Applause] [Applause] great metals I pop [Applause] Johnny let's see a line and short left as read project made the play on him [Music] where you can see he's hit a couple of home on fifth day yesterday [Applause] let us pitch just outside Cowan's plays metals and deep right-center the prey well back in right he's behind right now - oh I'm sure he will see mr. metals being bashful [Music] balance place medals and deep right center McCrae well back in right he's behind right now - oh I'm sure you will see if mr. metals being bashful letting the chef down as they say in bulk get the old one wood out the driver [Applause] flyball ready for tech goes back cowards comes in contact is the man makes the catch and the inning is over take a 4-3 lead over the Royal Bob le Cincinnati Reds who do you want to play in the series well I think there's still some magic attached the Yankees and if I had my preference I prefer to go to Yankee Stadium and play there I've never been there it'll be quite an experience off is no longer that svelt young man that came out alone btizzy no he was some big bonus baby with the Pittsburgh Pirates he was supposed to become one the greatest pirates ever played that didn't happen either he's been around Montreal probably be one of the designated hitters for Sparky Anderson in the World Series you're looking at Hal McRae who spent the better part of a season for Kansas City as the designated hitter he stands at the plate and following hell McRae then we'll have Jamie quirk and cookie Rojas Ted McRae pops it up to the infield Chambliss gets the call from the pitcher walk away began directing traffic didn't want anybody fooling with his first baseman on that one let me tell you Keith I saw it split off got away cheaply one in men on first and third none out got out of it Chambliss on the force and then retired the left hand but his major problem is going to be from here on in stamina I think you've clear already that having come on in the third on Sunday night passed and works through the eighth is not as sharp as it was on Sunday night now it is Jamie quirk the designated hitter facing right-hander edge 28 years of age today it's it over the mouth and they charge it [Music] that's one of my favorite plays my parakeet shows how much of agility how much movement how much lateral movement a guy has really shows what kind of asking a guy is have to hit a lot of home runs don't have to hit a lot of great average but look at the movement the ability they call in baseball how much kappa has he fools to see how much he was thrown out by remember we remarked yesterday Reggie Burke is without foot speed cookie Rojas singled stolen base scored a run back in the second inning Kansas City Inc is a leading year in the top of the fourth four to three sets of five balls well hip to height at left-back tonight the catch him Kansas City is born so after three and a half innings of play in the championship game the Yankees made the Royals for free back here at Yankee Stadium for the yankees it'll be oscar gamble willie randolph and fred stanley and Telly Savalas way to go till he tell he's all wrapped up in all that fur but out in the Yankee bulb and it looks like they've got some kind of a small container out there and a small fire to keep themselves warm [Applause] bottom of the fourth inning when the inning keys they lead four to three hospital delivers begin goes up to Punnett foul tips it and it's strike one gambled struck out looking Willie Randolph will follow and then stand the bottom third of the order has not been able to break through against splittorff so far it's been the top of the order that's done all the damage so far in the game for New York gamble hasn't played against left-handers all year long is it 15 home runs off right-handers only too often Afghanistan our fouled away and into the crowd and of course you have covered the point as well that Billy Martin wants to keep Elliott Maddox and Lou Piniella or later in the game and Casey needs from pinch-hitting Ellie Hendricks though the catcher came up and delivered and the only time he's been called on a serious and split off throws hard outside one ball and two strikes now the count special quality the feared pinch-hitter and control Kanna keep dealing ASA [Applause] I'll tell you that took a little courage on Oscars part to take that guess it did you see again ball and two strikes he went and tried to make a pitch so he struck maybes starting to settle back down into a groove again I believe Kansas City will score again so the ink is better get some ice Yankee Stadium rebuilt away and refurbished a lot 55 million of which was the allocated costs of the city peanuts this is New York 3 & 2 bounce pass cut the cheer Rojas better hurry cookie snapchat manuscripts that a good play by John excellent play big league all the way there he is providing leadership stability to the ball club doing his job Rojas made a good play but so did mayor Barrett and watch this [Applause] got a half a pound of dirt with doesn't matter here's Willie Randolph into the bright side bang bang they're very to God I do make it look easy okay he's got good hands for a big man good soft hands not like my ball is inside one of nothing now and you are looking at Fred Stanley the Yankee shortstop he's had an interesting series thus far look at that batting average just off the outside corner two out nobody on again here's a guy that knows his limitations in his capacity just trying to hit the ball to right field just try to move it around just get over the infielders heads because he's knows about a home plus there was one night here Reggie during the was against the Minnesota Twins hit a home run down the left-field line just foul he got back up there and he repeated this time just fan the ball went about 314 feet and end omran airs the strike three and one definitely thinking now will he be taking on this pitch we heard about that homerun with guy like Stanley hit up and everybody leg opens up their eyes yep taking all the way 3 2 trying to be a baserunner trying to get on these that admire that guy [Applause] that pitch was just low wait Sunna gets the free pass usability I'm gonna be line in torque home plate [Applause] capacity well again in in particular direction will be spread away here's the top of the order now picking rivers - four - you see a triple single and he has scored twice and he has been trouble tonight we get a bit he's got some of the weirdest actions at the plate of anyone I've ever seen there's paul splittorf but mickey rivers is always moving always dancing kind of fidgety kind of a ball player both feet blue white folks running in the box oh one just time in batting practice tonight Nikki hit two and deceits down the right-field line he has occasional power Keith we've discussed that earlier on in the series and he proved it in the very opening inning money tripled over both cat said yet one had this year run into the right-center blazer this place family off first two off for the Yankees the fourth inning rivers fouls it away and it's one ball two [Applause] waiting on deck is Roy white who's also scored twice tonight so his rivers of white have been all morning they've got all the peace [Applause] [Music] I don't know if we can get a look but you see the second baseman and shortstop in constant conversation to see if who is going to cover that bag sophisticated game baseball [Applause] rivers hits it foul down the left side got some wood on it doe and knocks it back into the ground he really did it then a good piece little more to the right could have gotten in there that that must Gary there's a lot of things that go on during the baseball game even one is kind of light you have your second baseman shortstop the one who's gonna cover you the concentration on the batter by the pitcher - catcher in the outfield is wondering where they're going to throw ball when they receive it this kind of situation a base hit going on second heading for third comes in he is a hot hitter tonight I might as well tell you folks that principle owner George Steinbrenner was not happy with Mickey rivers performance last night and he had Mickey privately up in his office after the game some 30 minutes after the contest and ended and he let me have a good piece of his mother apparent light and took hold because Mickey is a hot hitter tonight Andy Hassler and Marty Peck again in the Kansas City bullpen with Fred Stanley a third there's the right-hander pepper always amazes me how somebody that [Applause] don't be bitter Roy won at the plate there's Andy Haas patrolling at the Kansas City bullpen ball one on Roy white I'll keep it in that I have to don't come down the open clubhouse in a Baltimore Clubhouse and tell you what to do Roy white innovation just hi as family-owned third rivers on first to out for three two balls no strikes to white I'll tell you this on that particular pitch now Reggie Jackson looked to me like splittorf was trying to reach for a little too much well split off make it out of this situation but now second straight inning he's had to work very hard again and there's no way in my judgment but the limited amount of pitching he's done this year that he can go very long tonight there's the cam as this should end Galen Cisco Whitey Herzog across the way it's been a mark Pokemon Yankee dugout on the first page [Music] bases-loaded two-out Pam Cole by Kansas City as breath will come to the mouth always loaded them up now what he Herzog coming out of the dugout that could be it I'm going to get another pitcher because he doesn't want to look at Thurman Munson he hits left-handers exceptionally well hit 470 against paul splittorf for this career and he's got a hot bat tonight he's swinging a bat good so sure we'll see Marty packed right now Marty fat around the wire he pitches more now perhaps dial that he ever has in his career so time is ball here at the bottom of the fourth inning the Yankees leading the Royals 4-3 we'll be back to the poor in a moment but the Yankees in front for three with two out of the bases loaded now in the bottom of the fourth inning Paul splittorff leaves and 33 year-old Marty Pattin 510 180 pounds comes in with a 814 record on the season but a very good earned run average 2.49 the book on splittorff he went 3 and 2/3 innings two earned runs three hits struck out one and walked three he relieved Dennis Leonard who pitched to three batters and was roughed up for two earned run and Thurman Munson will be the first man to hit four they New York Yankees against Marty Pattin Munson with a pair of singles in the ballgame tonight and characterizing Pattin key he is not overpowering but he's been doing better than expected in the late going of the season he keeps his fastball away from a right-handed hitter it can't hold runners according to the scouting before and has box occasion that's a scouting report on Monte back now we get to the number that is humid said he goes against the ankle a solid ballplayer and as Munson walks in for this moment of Brahma 50 6821 people here which is a new record for a Yankee Stadium is over there on third base Mickey rivers is on second base Roy white needs to get it out oh boy he's swinging the bat good world the faceless back deck right now and his favor they got the big gun to plate with the baselet drunk loaded or filled dollars hit the left-field pocket hoses position makes the catch and on one pitch Marty Pattin gets Thurman Munson and so Kansas City avoids the beginning Jay keys are gone and after poor it's or three decades the preceding a message on behalf of Major League Baseball and now we move to the top of the fifth inning for the Kansas City Royals will be fred partek buck Martinez and the top of the order our power well that's the city at night downtown the foot of Manhattan Battery Park World Trade Center that big building which may identified yesterday there are two of them you will only see one one the back to the action but ed Figueroa pitching to five-foot 435 a spanking a Miss on a breaking pitch for strike one now I say this Keith in perspective this reminds me of last Sunday night's game the Yankees went ahead then three to two I'll continue tight with it but in that game if you remember they had nine hits after three and a third innings and only three runs split off got away in a potentially destructive situation explosive cheaply and Kansas City got out of it last inning the Yankees have not capitalized ball is hit high on the right side of the infield playable Chambliss backing up Chris inbound makes the catch one out [Applause] ed figueroa now is retired seven straight seems to have settled down reg hey he has safe to settle have settled down Howard it's gonna have to get some kind of good rhythm because I'm sure that it the slightest sign of any slippage at all that Billy Mark Martin will get him out there because he's got four or five guys out there ready willing and able that's for sure [Applause] Martinez again in the left field base hit for buck bite very well in the series he certainly has he's an unsung leader of this club in this series coming into a batting 221 on the season right no question about it as we've said before a short series anything can happen a lot of unsung unsung heroes you never know what could happen I guys can get a hot bat look at Fred Stanley and of course a guy like Munson that just continues to apply the pressure al Cowen's batting average however the series has been shrinking some here at Yankee Stadium i down to 158 he's at the plate it takes ball one from Figueroa we get more action now and the Yankee bullpen looks like it might be Jackson again it is Brent Jackson number 25 left-hander [Applause] [Music] it's over his penis cuts on the bank [Applause] so after four and a half [Music] six hits one error Kansas City three runs five hits no errors we have Andy Hassler on the mound now in relief and done gullet of the Cincinnati Reds whom do you want to go against in the forthcoming World Series I'm feeling like New York possibly might win the ball at the ballgame tonight but say nobody knows what can happen in volume I kiss but I'm looking forward really going back to New York we were there in 1973 they played the Mets and I even want to get back to New York and I've always heard a lot about you Anka Stadium I like to be there and like the time I left here comets have done gullet of the Cincinnati Reds the hard throwing left-hander Andy Hassler now is the third Kansas City pitcher I'll tell you our fourth Kansas City pitcher Marty Pattin did his job he came in threw one pitch months an hour and Marty now sitting in the dugout watching the first appearance of the series for Hester he pitched five innings four earned runs on four hits struck out three and walked three on the season there the total he's been well documented as having taken off a thunderous 18 game losing streak with California wave for the Angels picked up I can't just sit in finish the year five and six Hessler big six-foot five-inch 200 Phoenix Arizona delivers to Chris Chambliss leading off for the New York Yankees here in the bottom of the fifth inning Chambliss will be followed by Carlos May and then brake pedal may is in the on-deck circle it was hit hard to right centerfield may go itself against the wall beautiful thing to see that man stand up there against left-handers left-handers never really had bothered Chris Howard been a consistent ball player he's played every day since he's been in the big league it never really has been best to cut left-handed that's the reason he's had an outstanding season this year in there every day that's the only way you can drive in over 90 runs even I'm sorry reg that's his nine pimp key in the championship series that ties P Pro man on second base right now the obvious situation Willy bunt and try to get him over to third four to three will they try to make it five degrees so the other team has two good three runs keep mark littell they felt like a petrol boy Kansas today he is the ace fireman at least he throws the hardest [Music] the city and Carlos may now at the quake nobody out and Chris Chambliss on second base knew you're bleeding for three the acres at that here in the bottom very important to score a run tonight right now they can put a lot of pressure on Kansas City right now psychologically just by taking advantage of this scoring off the front of the begins to the world's get out of it they will have some psychological games going Aster's pitch good one tough as Carlos tried to bunt and Mister he's tough big three-quarter arm throwing left-hander and a little bit wild just wild enough to kind of keep you off balance at the plate he's even tough too funky back to and it didn't pop they didn't find nobody up your stuff tomorrow this guy is tough Carlos made job will it be can hit the ball to the right side of the infield again can't emphasize it enough you can't say it enough the name of the game is to win and to do that you've got to get runners in scoring position struck it out [Applause] you could have had a pinch-hitter whatever but the Yankees have a lead right now maybe Billy to save him for an opportune time to win he feels he really needs the batter is Greg Nettles with one out campus on second base having double to lead the inning and he has to the fourth Kansas City pitcher [Applause] big Andy throwing that pitch at the situation where the catcher may have read the scouting report and he knows what the manager wants to do where he wants to pitch him consequently Andy Hassler may not agree let's go out have a little Sun bikini [Applause] now they're asking Poquette they Kansas City leftfielder to come in son we've acted left they bring it in they centerfielder talents well over in the right center you see the big hole there at left-center field level let's talk about hostile who's the main figure right here going against the homerun champion Greg nettles again two home runs yesterday but he doesn't give up a lot of homegrown miss 99 innings 47 innings for the for the year he only gave up five high fly ball on the right side of the infield for John Maybury just fair Johnson's in a way and now you've got two out with Chambliss still sitting out at second base failed to advance him but the Yankees at this point even though they're one run ahead the omens are not good they continue not to capitalize on scoring opportunity that's the key point here the sooner or later one can expect Kansas City to explode Oscar gamble 250 hitter into Championship Series hasn't hit well-off left-handers either Keith he's looked at a called third strike and grounded out second to first tonight he's all four to Mike one nipson foul [Applause] Astra taking his time coming down off the rubber on a rub the ball shake off the tremors that might grip in my tell you got to be pumped up under these circumstances inductively high you have a look at his feet how he spend it how he's going after it what do you think tough situation for the big guy he's got him running in hiding right now keep got his one-on-one on Oscar gamble and again they play Oscar to pull or that is the centerfielder goes into right-center with it and let's make note if they get out of this inning they're going to be psychologically up gyms in inside two and one situation where the Yankees fail to advance that leadoff double over the third base and when you're out there on the field you know with this these things mean get that runner over to third in scoring position if they don't do it it's a success for the defensive ballclub in this off second as their pitches gamble hits it foul down the left-field line in the crowd and Christopher will go back to second base mark littell is the man right now in the Kansas City bullpen young pitcher that and really throw the baseball hard or if you like swiftly Railway Express Wells Fargo right now instant company to to the gambler after all wind whipping around swirling the papers swirling the dust it's been gusty all day in New York City [Applause] winter is coming [Applause] inside it's full free too you see right there he missed his target buck Martinez was sitting outside Oscar gamble moved back off the plate from an inside fastball three runs five hits no errors for the Royals four runs seven hits one error for the Yankees Yankees at bat at the bottom of the fifth inning we to pitch to gamble check swing roller let it go it'll be foul and Esther scoops it up the moment it goes outside the chalk line he's tough he keeps you off-balance I said before and you haven't really seen Oscar gamble or any two left-handed hitters have a real good full cut a good swing off of this guy Chambliss doubled he's annoying he's uncomfortable and Chambliss hit the first pitch with four double if you know what as big as he is and as strong as he is and his athletic he is his wife Deborah again run him on the golf course see ya yes from Arizona yes right a pretty blonde old counter gamble and Oscar again they don't buy our twins calling time Chris Chambliss at second base - ow it's orinda hitters burn off here and history steps off playin game industry is the ink is not hip the Royals 52 to 34 but the Royals have scored more runs and it's still two games apiece [Applause] 3 2 pitch low vol 4 so it's a walk with us for example now you've got to you out as Astor goes to first Elston Howard there and over at second fits across campus he probably wishes he had a jacket by now now you got Willie Randolph up Keith I'm the series he's only 2 for 14 mind you that during the season this kid rally killed a rally now watch moment [Applause] all one here comes Galen Cisco out of the dugout going to the mound [Applause] where I'll talk to him right now tell him to settle down a little bit big guys you got good stuff throw the ball over the plate give yourself a chance you got no chance if you walk guys and give them free passes and put them on base make them hit the ball don't lose make a beat you make them hit the ball but Makem hit him at some but try to give your team a chance to help you let's hel remains active in the Kansas City bullpen of all on count on Willie Randolph with shampoos and second yeah bullet first is outside those they'd get to the four days before the game is [Applause] wow what a look like you reached back and then snapped just broke enough and Willie Randolph at full stride going on the pitch if he really wanted to pull the trigger on it must have been a slider because it was just enough to make it great cause for alarm when Hastur gets behind that's been his characteristic a little bit while but with good stuff come back and make for good pitch Ellis now 3 and 1 he's one pitch away from loading the bases and Whitey Herzog is suffering do you think peace of mind isn't going $100,000 right now he doesn't want to spend the tell this earlier I don't think that's high ball four now the bases are loaded with two out [Applause] let him pitch to him I'm sure Stanley is the man second straight inning the Yankees have had the bases loaded last inning Munson ended it hitting at the first pitch flying out there have been two outs each time the base have been loaded in this situation Howard so it takes the base hit a base hit they break the ballgame open right now we're not going to see a lot other left-handed pitcher right now pastor in there strike Paul as he throws the fastball to Stanley left-handed hitters coming up again Mickey rivers and of course doesn't make it did you make a change because behind him you got Roy white there's only one more left handed pitcher out there in the bullpen for the world nest even before the name like turn the frets tempo pastor now having trouble with his control throws two bullets to Fred Stanley and gets him oh and to the bases full and two out here in the bottom of the fifth inning you can be wild and again you can come back and make some perfect pitches he's got great stuff now let me see it a two strike pitch area Yankees on base Chris Chambliss is at third base Oscar Gamble's up at second base and Willie Randolph's at first to after pitching to Fred Stanley time also [Applause] [Applause] Rojas and cookie grabs it to envy any so the Yankees leave the bases loaded lady the bar game for three we'll be back before after this word from a local station we're back at Yankee Stadium as we moved at the top of a sixth inning the score is 4:3 New York leads Kansas today Keith Jackson along with Howard Cosell and Reggie Jackson there's the line total in the ballgame so far the line score you can see the Yankees about hit Kansas City but the Royals still with a breach sigiriya jump Tom Poquette to leadoff point to be made is that the Yankees have seven hits or bases on balls they have left eight men on base this game certainly up to this point but the ice still ahead resembles the pattern of Sunday night's game okay it looks at the best for ed Figueroa [Applause] George thread is on deck and that will be the cleanup hitter John Maybury this guy seems to leading off innings hitting 337 I'm sorry for walking on right what it was better get a heavier coat [Applause] taps it over the man over for his window close enough so Willie makes the defensive play and now here's Kansas City third baseman George Brett he is doubled and hit a flat in the center field he is scored one run in this game when I the final game when are here the bat goes off to play Cincinnati of the World Series in Cincinnati on Saturday Big Red Machine a gorilla's fastball is high George Brett said he doesn't look to hit home runs sometimes but in the situation like this they're one run down and he hits Figueroa so well just maybe goes away from him it's two balls and no strikes Fred Jackson is in the Yankee bullpen at Mark littell at the Kansas City bullpen ideal situation the count is 200 and there you see Thurman town I'm gonna keep the ball down keep the ball down [Applause] oh three ed figueroa sunday night in the second game travel five and a third innings right now that's where he is five and a third will he be swinging three-and-oh key you gotta tell me before he throws that's no affair he just wants to get on to give Mayberry a shot and hope for a pitching mistake by Figueroa has occurred in the first round out there he does bridge speed break speed ball hit well George Brett doesn't hit too many easy ball needs of all on an old Mickey with three for three leads off next inning for the bottom half listening for the Yankees having a brilliant night rebus John Maybury two-run homer in the first inning here's the big guy and Munson breaker and Reggie Munson's going out to talk to Figueroa very simple a reminder is one way to pitch Mayberry don't give them the inside half of the plate shift takes effect keep the ball away preferably of course low all right now you look at it defensively you can see out there in the top left of your picture that's my wife the left fielder he's almost right away and left but there's about four acres between him and Mickey rivers then you come over to the right fielder who's straightaway at right the infield the shortstop is on the second base side of second base the third baseman nettles is up at the normal shortstop position if Figueroa is high on the first pitch to Mayberry is ball one [Applause] that one is also I again Keith here's the situation here he's got to be careful with Mayberry is four to three and then the right-field porch is right on his left shoulder really just a little blooper can get over the right-field wall here you see Big John gritting his teeth and grinding it out he can't be swinging and he got low there and John got to do it was heisst we have just done another balloon removed I was talking to Charlie laughs I'm not far John appears to be standing a wedge Earl I said well last year he hit a ton stepping forcefully into the pit so there's a shot toward the corner it is off the wall Mike Mo he hit it so hard that all Oscar had to do was turn around and play the ricochet you see the expression of a very nice play by Oscar gamble off-the-wall and outstanding throw this ball hits so hard bass ball inside hit it hard enough to be a home run but he didn't get it up enough off the 3:10 side and a good play by Oscar old Big John to a single well you know how bright I was dude Billy Martin is he took cognizance of that Figueroa couldn't pitch Mayberry the way we supposed now McRae a little tap out in front of the plate Figueroa throw 50 so al McCrae an excuse me swing hemp's back to the pitcher and so we've gone through five and a half of the Yankees still lead the Royals 4-3 well we've done Mickey rivers coming up now Reggie I talked about the owner George Steinbrenner earlier talking with Mickey rivers last night let me tell you something about Steinbrenner he's brought a lot of color a lot of flamboyancy his aim isn't to tell rivers how to play it's to motivate the man and I think he's succeeded whatever he did he's three for three in the ball game he scored two times [Applause] [Music] [Applause] did not make a good pun he got to fall down right out in front of the catcher right out in front of the pitcher but he's so fast a running start one of the fastest men in baseball don't ask how he where a Big Red Machine the man could fly that equals incidentally an American League Championship in fact a championship series records for most hits in a single game you think I made Petros was over the water get up out of their chair I guess the record is five so rivers now it with four in a row is one away from the record meanwhile he's had eight hits in this year 22 I fats and they've got a ball and here's where all the things Reggie has talked about in terms of what Mickey rivers does to us position all those things now come into play into focus wife wife the hitter for New York why didn't rip he's a sport all of New York run watch the ball there bot Mayberry on the Play Rojas covers at first they get Roy white Mickey rivers is second base on the sacrifice Roy remains one foot one on the day single in the first two bases on balls and now the sacrifice one out Billy Martin has had enough he wants a run and he wants it now will his play good baseball right there he advanced the runner wore white doing a job and now they've got to contend with the big guy Thurman Munson they'll probably pitch around him or pitch to a tough they need testing faster and make Chris Chambliss Drive to run in instead of Munson Galen Cisco has come to the mound to talk with Andy Hassler and buck Martinez and they're making their decision right now and you can see that Andy is in full agreement whatever the coach is saying mark littell and steve mingori mingori is they left-hander David daughter born to the Tories yesterday Steve saw a picture of her [Applause] and there's the comfortable number 17 Thurman Munson it's a plate you got one out rivers at second I don't think I've ever seen a Manitou get more out of his roster than Whitey Herzog has gotten out of his in this series reg he's been a brilliant man great job overcoming the injuries I don't think they're going to pitch to Munson they're going to pitch around him if he if he hits he's going to have to hit a bad fish they pissed him in there great they just dip the fastball over the inside corner for a strike 91 miles an hour on that make another hundred and fifty thousand dollars another term is America may you be a nice fit on your with it man rivers off second base [Applause] [Music] digging for second knees out [Applause] but if you difference for second base for the Yankees we did five four three I say to yourself why watch the TV game sitting at home why did Thurman Munson go after that why did he try to stretch it into a double there you see him going with the pitch as he's done so well all year long he's going to last couple years driving in 105 runs if he's on second base with one out they don't have to waste time or waste another out getting him over to second base it's a good play to try to get over second base right here and it takes a perfect play a perfect throw to get him urbanized to look on the door and he said to said Dave McRae couldn't throw out of there all right Keith Howard has just connected his 10th hit of the city [Applause] now you were right they were crazy to pitch them look at Mickey go at the goes on from Dick Howser never looked just check this coach game oh man two out now the bases are empty for Chris Chambliss the Yankee still believed to 5:3 here in the bottom of the sixth inning Andy Hassler a little bit for the Yankees here Munson 10 out of 22 on the series a new record and total hits in the championship series sorry about that Pete Rose Petey doesn't mind he just wants to win he's throwing things around his house right now no he's he's a Jenny bench's restaurant house Carolyn get after there's a strike two and one this embolus [Applause] the middle in the center field for a few the Inca jumping on Hassler he's got ten faces that's right and he continues to chew up left-hander [Applause] I was Chambliss on first base crazy new but in the Kansas City dugout where Herzog and Cisco have talked again and white his patient Reggie Chambliss is 10 out of 2,500 on the series that's what she calls scalding the ball and seven RBIs on the series now who's the most knight now that's why there's some question on who is the most valuable player both of these fellows Thurman Munson along with Chris Chambliss along with Mickey rivers right have exemplified or showed you the reasons why they are being considered all in the running for the most valuable player Ward who do you give it to Carlos may takes high ball one it has all been outstanding whom do you give it I don't want to get into integration to Christian [Applause] by the way it's 1 in 1 on Carlos faith Yankees maybe five three in the ball game and hitting in the bottom of the sixth inning for a little more undecided miss power let's throw in greg nettles with 32 home run [Applause] one pitch their dose human smuggling disk go to second base see the big man move it he didn't have a particularly big lead he just simply took off and made it good slide fade away slide now with two of us out at second base hit that's Florian Carlos hey up there as you see the replay looking in from centerfield and it's one and two on the better a little tempter spread charging a third base [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] takes four runs for them to get me [Applause] suddenly the actions of Tobruk [Applause] using the running surfing so well let's take another look little chapter by Li Mei I call us they forget with Reggie Jackson John Goodman on to the ball thrown into the dirt error on the third baseman the third throwing error on George Brett in this series it is a 6 to 3 ballgame and we've got time hold as the umpires in the ground nobody out there has to take a moment to help clean things up again so George Brett charging that little temporary third base does not get the throw on the money Mayberry who as skilled as anybody and digging him out could not come up with that from queenly and Chris campus running on the temp paint him to score tough play right there for George you heard yourself a little bit didn't have to quite hurry that much because he had it appeared as though we have plenty of time make an error like that George knows what he's done I believe it'll just make him a better hitter the next time he comes to the plate well boys are going to need a little hitting three [Applause] so bad about my ball players you're making that apparent [Applause] Esther delivers to Greg nettles with Carlos pay on first base and two out and he misses ball one it runs through your mind make a mistake like that you know you want to try to make up for it Carlos just called off the basis obviously we're going to get our runner [Applause] sandy Alomar goes out to the run for Kalos made using his entire roster tonight wanted where some up were but now he's coming through it's starting to show you where they are I guess it probably means we'll see Lou Pinella going up as a designated hitter good idea what the top of the Yankee batting order is done tonight 16 appearances for them they've been on base 13 times rivers on base four times right on base three out of four times Munson on base three out of four times and Tim was on base three out of four times for the top of the water has really done something I have to be careful right now with Greg now because it's breaking unload one right now and it'll be hallelujah see you at the pass Andy Hassler still out there Munson said to me tonight regardless of the outcome I live in the Kenton so I'm going to Cincinnati no matter what happens those four men Keith that you just named by the way of 10 hits oh goody any but it is a big inning for the Yankees as base for two now enjoy free run Christian after six innings of play the Yankees six at the Royals three manager Sparky Anderson manager Sparky Anderson who do you want to face I don't care which one we play I think they're both outstanding ball clubs but to be in the World Series I wouldn't mind if we played the nangka off so in Japan you're looking at Jamie quirk the designated hitter for Kansas City leadoff the top of the seventh inning then cookie Rojas Fred Patek buck Martinez would be the fourth hitter Jamie quirk in the ball game flyball to left grounded out to short he's old for two Yankees lead 6-3 Kansas City now get down to cases gotta come up with some offense against Ed Figueroa if they have any hope for the Yankee bullpen is now very active with Pat Jackson and dick Tidrow throwing aunt you won't waste a moment slightest sign of faltering out Lacombe Figueroa we got a good Billy Martin little bit of credit he certainly has got stuck with Figueroa he stuck to his gums all along and up to this point doesn't give up pretty good gotta give him a lot of credit it's 3 in 1 as it's high [Applause] talk about the fiery feisty Billy Martin he's showing me a lot of class the last couple of days hardship [Applause] Oh [Applause] watch the quickness of the big guy at first no chance for indecision bang bang stick your glove up and hope it's there and hope it doesn't ripped your head off lucked into his glove to make sure I don't believe obsessively otherwise it could have been too we're cookie Rojas takes her back one thicker row is moving along quite easy right now sending a nice pattern he's got everything going for him [Music] there's the Yankee bullpen right-hander Tidrow left-hander Jackson got the momentum going got the crowd on his side just cordis couple just scored a couple of runs sailing along who can wreck the ship popped up back of the plate Hudson coming I can't make the play slides up against the backstop be careful Thurman I'd leave you are you giving it to them Keith I say you I give it a try say Mike I always slip in that little qualifying adjectives telegrams from Kansas City you though however would certainly hate to see premier performer like that get injured at this juncture of the season I know the feeling two strikes now on cookie Rojas lo one and two settle into a nice pattern Eddie Figueroa keeping the ball away moving the ball around the strike zone in when he has to away when he has to just outside knows he can give it all he's got right now he's gotten to the seventh inning and he's got relief to the bullpen yeah we've got a 2 2 count on cookie he is really something special another 37 years of age 15 years in the big leagues hits a ball on the ground of the shortstop Stanley that has it those are not two down and Saturday afternoon these ABC stations NCIA comments before it'll be Alabama and Tennessee from Knoxville at 3:30 p.m. and that is one of the wars during the football season down south you talk about giving a manager credit and about Billy Martin Reggie he's the kind of guy as I've said who'll take the blows and do it his way two down now and Freddy Potter gets a foul off the right side he met with his coaches he know everybody was saying big ballpark look at the competitive record and championship games pitch Ken Holtzman and this game is far from over but that fellow right there and discussions with his coaches they said Figueroa A's 119 Forrest Billy went with him and if he gets knocked out now he has done his part of the bargain Figueroa has produced so Martin has moved out he has yielded two singles in the last 16 batters for Kansas City one in one count to Boyle [Applause] but it takes the strike matter-of-fact Reggie looks sharp and now against the right-handed Banias and he's looked all game you look sharp right now is godless got his adrenaline flowing and you can feel you can sense it in Yankee Stadium right now the crowd get a little anxious and the people in New York of course anticipating all the time hard shot third-base nettles knocks it down picks it up [Applause] you know if I was before I was fooled by the call of the empire - he called safe with his fists double up the fists bill that means you're out have a look at it it's a great comeback by Freddie Stanley right over there where he should be gets off a great throw but this man can run and there you see it looks like he's given the out I did it it'll be a base hit sharply hit by Freddie Patek so this scrappy little guy he's just absolutely been marvelous for the Kansas City Royals he is the leader he's the guy that takes them and shakes on them lose him around I'll take off he might oh it's his inside given just a little bit of room buck Martinez is up there at two for two in this ballgame all these that that's right now are which you can call throwaways no deposit no return said it before and I'll say it again there's no tomorrow cash in your coupons cause of no strikes Freddie Patek on first base waiting in the on deck circle Alcala despotic again the tip roll is heating in the bullpen I saw is grant Jackson crowd of here is getting a little action mr. face count the Royals down it through before that they're men and pros can be pros [Applause] ballplayers don't give up they'd never give up three balls and no strikes now to buck Martinez that's why they tell you when you've got another team down just try to bury him keep going there's a strike don't let up there's Tedrow the right-hander Jackson the left-hander attack aging off first Oh God is kidding here did she what define the rumble in the background they're tenting Edie if that's it got to go after it book is trying to take food off of your table in there goes pond tech ball hit to left field Roy White has a play inning is over in the city no runs on one hit they leave one after six-and-a-half it's six three yogi pad looks like they're almost prepared for snow or it might be a football crowd but it's not it's the final game of the American League Championship Series the winner of the game tonight goes on against Cincinnati in the World Series and the Yankees now Pauly D fires four of six to three going into the bottom of the seventh inning the line score you see New York six runs on 10 hits and an error Kansas City three runs seven hits and an error and Kansas City scored twice in the first inning once at the 2nd New York [Music] at 2 into 6 the here is Greg nettles to leadoff it is to be powered by Oscar gamble [Music] [Applause] and Andy Haas Maria still the man [Applause] and the first methyls is inside for a while I'm sure the old American League home run champ here just like the dialate like they're doing a hotel for long this is just one more time for good measure outside ball [Applause] nettles is the only Yankee not to reach first base tonight he trying to reach the seats [Applause] [Music] anywhere station the station firstly first three balls and no strikes now as we our director Chet 40 stayed close to give you a look at Greg nettles faces he took ball three and now has four accomplished all four ball gets away from buck Martinez nettles hustles to first turns buck whole team littell now is active again and that Kansas City bullpen now reach the point where they can they can call on it and probably will if Andy Hassler gets in any kind of trouble here Leslie right now since you've got two right-handed hitters coming up next the Yankees have already used Carlos man force oscar gambling the way now so if he loses oscar game i'm sure we'll see littell the face Randolph and family but Martinez to throw and gets gamble on the sacrifice as they move medals for second now with one out half the man in scoring position for Willie Randolph and here comes Fletcher as expected five and a half innings of this ballgame it was a squeaker the Yankees for the Royals 3 the Yankees leaving a ton of men on base relatively speaking and the game bore similar proportions to last Sunday night's game but it didn't turn out that way or at least it hasn't up to this point because suddenly the Yankees erupted it for two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and now Martin seeks more insurance using a good sacrifice bunt by Oscar gamble [Music] nd hash their leaves sits down in the dugout and Mark littell is coming in hard throwing right-hander who did not allow an earned run in 46 of his 59 relief appearances in 1976 or the Kansas City Royals Reds did you bat against littell yes I faced him a couple of times during this season Howard he's a hard throw he comes right at you fastball slider has a changeup but he doesn't throw it very much so we've got a timeout here at Yankee Stadium as we get the new pitcher mark littell and we'll be right back with more all right George Foster who do you want to face in the series gotta play the New York Yankees before so good friend Kansas City well maybe we talk about financially I think we're doing a better position by planting video making and also there are a lot of memories in that ballpark of the players like they do their dirty the hug they do mark littell the hard throwing right-hander comes on now he is the fifth Kansas City pitcher in the ballgame he believes Andy Hassler as they're responsible for [Music] leading off second base whatever end up the batter with one out [Applause] inside Frenchy you said you only hit against littell a couple of times let's show the memory of a head or what did you do against well the first time up I hit a ground ball to second base the next time up I lined out to the first baseman Mayberry first pitcher hit a fastball the second was this letter apt or short Patek throws and gets Randolph as nettles goes to third with two out good job he comes in there you see Greg nettles getting a little whisper from Dick Howser he comes into the game Mark littell does knowing that he cannot afford to give up another run if he does the psychological advantage could get completely out of hand for the Kansas City world right now so he's got a job to do mark littell does for his ballclub and their family [Applause] nettles off third stanza the batter littell with two [Applause] and Gauri isn't the Ganges that he can write [Applause] and the pitch just inside ball one [Music] there's the left-hander mingori Steve McCrory Pacey's gold on the other Whitey Herzog now I'm going to use everybody he thinks them might have a chance to produce some runs and to city needs three two time all this to the right side the fray coming in a hurry makes the catch on the run hell makes the catch in my field the Yankees threatened but don't score after seven in six three Yankees it will be back before baseball after this word from our local station as we looked at on Yankee Stadium from our picture aboard the ABC helicopter here's the story of the ballgame as Kansas City comes up at the top of the 8th inning Yankees six runs 10 hits and one error Kansas City three runs seven hits and one error Edie Figueroa the starter he's gone all the way and he now will face the top of the order for Kansas City al Cowen's Tom Poquette and George Brett powers poke it must start getting on base Kansas City's to have a ginge in this ballgame first pitch for bigger Laura Collins is high and tight well you can see Cowan hasn't done a heck of a lot since you got that hit I guess you could say a day or so ago but he's got to get something going to get Kansas City back in this ball game on the screen the baserunner Figaro says no no change a baseball no the other day I mentioned why sometimes a team baseball sometimes the ball might be a little bit bigger than the other you'll rise to the pitcher and siguiente is that the option to change baseball sometimes you might not you might find moment doesn't have this up and down on both left field base hit for Callen and Roy White gets it back yet in a hurry and it is Steve burrows the first base coach well Kansas City has some better to work with and Billy Martin is all the way to the mound and you might very well the effect you're going to get a bitching change right here Jackson and Tidrow are out of the bullpen both heated up and apparently Billy wants to the left-hander Jackson well as I said earlier he's done his job for a guerrilla crowd stands gives Figueroa some over and they were screaming any goody-goody before in unison the origin event bride relates to a woman [Applause] Eddie Figueroa now on his way in to relieve Eddie Figueroa here at the top of the eighth-inning and we will be back deli Martin returns to the dugout now having footprint Jetson veteran left-hander into the ball game in relief of Eddie Figueroa Figueroa traveling seven complete innings Jackson on the season seven and one he will be facing a pinch-hitter for Kansas City Jim Wohlford summoned he will hit for Poquette he's a right-handed batter and he's 1 for 1 in the only appearance against grant Jackson this year Wohlford a 249 hitter moon looking like a piece of green cheese out there came to play wolf it straight away goes with the bench most of the time you don't like to give him the right field line because he's good hitting down there he's always ready and looking for the fastball especially with two strikes the book on him is the throw sliders just off the plate and down now Cowan's let off for Kansas City at over 18 standing right there number 14 is Steve Boros at first base coach for Kansas City Chuck Hiller be waiting over at bird want a little piece of the action himself the third-base coach the situation where you have some scouting reports and say the book condoms are throwing sliders down and then Jackson's the power pitcher doesn't have a real good spot it he's got a three-run lead to work with and I'm sure he'll go right after Jimmy wolf but especially since he's got that big left field I guess you can call it Yellowstone Park working for him here I think you're right throws it on the inside corner here and gets the call strike I fancy you just charge it balance off first that one's high it's one in one on deck George Brett it's one to Billy Martin going for grant Jackson that or he knows the power men coming up for Kansas City are from the left side obviously he wants Jackson to work against Brett and Mayberry bickering a Jackson is at least the equal awkward Wohlford fouls it back one to last two pinches are according to the book bridge sailing away than the outside and down one fastball away in the other one it was it was a ball that was down it was a breaking ball kind of out of characteristic for grant but you never know what situation there's the story on Grant factions career versus the Kansas City Royals Royals an existence in eight seasons they are fighting with the Yankees that pitch is just high - a - it's the Royals dream to duplicate the miracle of the Mets who in their eighth year won everything in 1969 as they astonished everybody by beating the birds of Baltimore on the five games oh now it is three and a two there'll be no tricks now he's missed with two spiders he missed with a fastball trying to go down with it it's fastball all the way right now power against power here we go a little cleaner head out of the shorts interfere rivers coming no play whoa cowards delayed on it they almost came up with the play at second base rivers might have had a chance with it Keith so now you have nobody out and you have the tying run coming to plate I watched cowards he had to hold up because of Mickey River speed out there and Center then he realized that rivers couldn't get to it and if they have really gone quickly for the throw they might ahead a play a second place but they did not that's the important thing and now George Brett the American League batting champion is at the plate representing the tying run in the ball game at second base hail cowards at first base you over now here is George Brett talk to George yesterday and he said he doesn't try to go for home runs unless the situation warrants it he represents the tying run at Jackson's fastball is high entitled there's no quit in this team and George Brett the best hitter in the American League has hit 362 with men on base throughout the in 1976 you couldn't have a better man up hi hipster I feel all run it's gone hi situations Mikey sandy doesn't like to look for pitches because it takes away from his great assassin and just hitting the ball hard in particular spots but there he is no gospel I think I know how [Applause] to the plate take a look at the little short porch over there George Brett you might not be a scientific hitter George but you can do it and obviously he gets a roaring welcome into the Royals here's a client of this crowd they're all even in runs and all even in hips even even in error in this ball game [Applause] changes make note that we're all standing up right now there's no excitement in George Brett's face he's concentrating how joy feels a great deal of jubilation he knows that he made a bad play the last time I'm characteristic of him Billy Martin got lots and lots of things on his mind uncharacteristic of George Brett II made a couple errors in this series but he's come back like a true Pro like a champion has hey Barry pops it up yeah it'll be out of play as Munson let's go have a look that is the second home run of the ballgame for Kansas City of Mayberry had a two-run shot in the first inning can't read a three-run shot here in the top of the eighth-inning to get the Royals even if six up one sided Howard I'm just telling it like it that's the way to go Reggie inside to Mayberry it's 2 & 2 John Martin played every percentage came in with a left-hander George Brett can hit anybody Wow you gotta get that one down got to get that one down because the next run just might be worth $20,000 to the team that gets Kansas City there is jubilation right now and what a bunch of young ballplayers hold to the right side and over to Mike the play and the exaggerated defensive shift against Mayberry Randolph throws him out now you've got one way and a city with two home runs tonight indicates they're coming out perhaps of the slump that has plagued them they had haven't hit only three home runs in their previous 37 games including the championship series that they've gone bang-bang tonight at use Hal McRae playing right field [Applause] outside from grant Jackson I will see the resiliency of grant Jackson will see the resiliency of the Yankees two bars in those cracks to Hal McRae went out and the bases are clean thanks to the three-run home run by George Brett three balls of no strikes stages get to be set with somebody to be a hero only Martin on the steps of the dugout Sparky Lyle of dick to throw are active in the Yankee bullpen all this hip the left Roy white this back and makes the catch make note that he let him swing away three and oh you don't normally do in a ballpark like this because it's not easy to reach the wall that is true but as I've said before there are many similarities between Herzog and Martin in a sense they've grown up in the same baseball way and they play that kinda venturesome baseball drive the same car they both had on cashmere sweaters today did they similarities baby flirt late right ball a designated hitter we're gonna miss baby went for the fastball and good together surrounded our way longest tripled yesterday ball and two strikes just a waste pitch right there and I'm sure he'll try to keep the ball away from Jamie because again if that ever presence of the right-field fence [Music] [Applause] well it was a big big inning for the Kansas City Royals three-run home run by George Brett and after seven and a half were all even at six six [Applause] there it is Kansas City six in runs an error New York six ten runs an error and we go down to the bottom of the eighth inning for the New York Yankees incidentally at Figueroa charged with four of those six Kansas City runs and now for the Yankees it is the top of the order which has been particularly troublesome Mickey rivers please singles penis Ford three times he will be followed by Roy white and then Thurman Munson and Mark littell on the mound for Kansas City Mickey rivers we said it before the chemists of the offense four hits already supplied half of the runs [Applause] and littell fastball this is for one last guy to get five hits I'm Paul Blair [Applause] under any circumstances we come to a tie situation in the eighth-inning where Herzog has the very man in there that he would most won a power pitch big strong and unafraid Martin has done everything right it didn't work for [Applause] Dave with Figueroa got the most out of him came in will the southpaw pitcher has been his best pitcher on the team during the fading weeks of the season put him against a left-handed hitter high fly ball hits the right center McRae goes over thanks the catch George Brett is I don't know what kind of hitter he is he just a good one I don't know if he's left-handed or right-handed because he shows no signs of giving in to anybody he has I don't think he's had a bad out in the five games we've had up to this point had a chance he might have a future in this game boy a great play switch hitter for New York look one out bases empty gave all even at 66 let's make note of the fete Roy white now a right-handed hitter if you come to 320 hitter you get 12 of his 14 home runs left-handed right here in the ankus Damon with the short porch he becomes a threat [Music] [Applause] he's won 4-2 against littell this season bill Haller right-field umpire going out to explain something off the field a lot of debris around [Applause] here it is through white shot at Mayberry good play by John and Roy whites out it hit hard excellent play had a little trouble getting a handle on it but he kept his body in front of it just in case he would have had a problem with it so very quickly you've got two down four thurman munson watch this play as Mayberry gets in front of it gets his man quite high on the line I could see them so quickly littell has to ound and you can still feel the sense of momentum of the Royals with that three run outburst in the athan every much single all right sweet sa Thurmond wants to see the baseballs that's all times I always wonder the pitcher has the option to change the ball anytime he wants to the batter can only look at it if the umpire says it's out its out if not its back to the pitcher Oh fairness in this game Thurman Munson has delivered two runs knocked across to the night for New York in the city writing homework power Brett into a 66 tie Whitey Herzog watching for the bugga springing of us strike two goes right after you now I'm quite sure he'll try and make a pitch no balls and two strikes he doesn't want to give it Thurman anything that will cost them the American League pennant [Applause] [Music] justice yes tried to make a pitch on this kid tries to pitch low to everybody hard slider good fast don't some job grade ratio of hips against innings pitched Reggie you see him back off the mound before he would go to his mouth they're not allowed to go to your mouth when you're in the dirt on the pitch again Munson fouls it out of play straight back if you do it's an automatic call very hard to hit home runs against Locke let Jim this time [Music] sometimes when they'll let you blow on your hand on a cold night like this but he's stepping off because he's wetting his finger which you're not allowed to do one into fifth option looking out so the terror does his thing here in the bottom of the eighth-inning and after eight completed into play here stretching this one to the limit Kansas City six New York six six six times Kansas City will come to the plate in the top of the ninth inning get on the mound for the New York Yankees their third pitcher dick Tidrow tetro in 1976 started the season as a relief pitcher Marquis was the primary left-hander indict the right-hander in the second half of the season tip drove recorded six saves and his last 10 appearances so he's very effectively for the New York Yankees in the latter part of the season Reggie Jackson you faced this big guy tell us about him read up on big six-foot four inch guy dick Tidrow from California from Hayward used to be a starter was was was was Cleveland got traded over here the Yankees had one of the big trades it watch Chris Chambliss over here what did you hit against this guy he's a power pitcher Howard fastball slider occasional changeup not too much he'll turn the ball over when I say turn the ball over change a rotation on the ball try to get a little bit more movement but basically a power pitcher he'll throw as hard as he can for as long as he can and then wait for Sparky Lyle to come in how how many times did you go to bat against him oh I faced him quite a few times he's been around ever since about 1971 and 1969 that decent success with dick I hit a couple of home runs off my career but now I'm running a little streak on him right now in about four or five strikeouts in a row really you'll have 281 Korea home runs do you remember every homer in every opposition pitcher Howard I guess that's my bread and butter as I say homerun hitters driving Cadillacs or whatever you want to say your Pontiacs but I remember every one of them and I can tell you the pitcher and the pitch keep all right cookie Rojas to lead it off for Kansas City in the top of the ninth Freddy Patek at buck Martinez and cookie hits a hard one bouncer to Fred Stanley he's out a situation right now where every hitter that comes with a plate eros Princeton they have to make it a fine play every hitter that comes in a plate least this is the way it was when we played when I played in the playoffs you've got to produce now you don't want to file your pitch off you want to try to get it and when you do get it you want to try to capitalize on it because you know there's no tomorrow say it again say it again but it has great deal of meaning here's the little guy Freddy Patek Kansas City shortstop but he looks at low for 162 games then four more in the final game down now to the ninth inning and still all even [Music] [Applause] I shot it close-up at their faces they're concentrating all they can right now pulling out every stop reaching down as far as they're possibly go you'll see the best baseball they can produce Tech 2 for 3 against Tidrow this season swings and fouls this ball waiting on deck buck Martinez Marquis Lyle and Doyle Alexander are throwing now in the New York bullpen one out nobody on there Alexander the right-hander file the left-hander Alexander to make his first appearance if he should get a call I've seen him in for serious while has been one occurrence 1 & 2 to protect Wow and we need a new piece of lumber put that breaking pitch right in on the hands a hard slider remember Rolly fingers stick one time I wouldn't mind seeing them take all of marbles put all the money out just play one game opening day and whoever wins you're the champion that's what we've got here tonight we've got one anything to see who the champion is could have a lot of fat ball bears good to have a lot of innings [Applause] 1 & 2 - Freddy Patek dick titlow third now partake outside cause our trash behind the plate calling the balls and strikes you come this far go this long get to this point in the decisive game and the pressure is there's a real Yankee fan right there 1 & 2 bow-bow tech digs in Munson is shaken up but that way he's hurt if I could hit him just another mask Adam's apple oh that really hurts the hazards of catching hit on his shoulder hit on the hands you take a look at any catcher's hands while his fingers of half um have been broken bruises on his shins let's look at it from the center-field camera every atom sample it's no real way to measure the velocity of a fastball in there and then hit by the patter just increase it at this stage of the game if he had a broken hand he'd see it through knowing thurman munson his head question about it the situation here I had a guy I played with all year long just with relish Keith get the situation we went into Baltimore one in the hope and one time and I said to leave me I said lead the grass is high here to worry about getting basis he said Jack where I'm trying to go the grass don't grow I said well why don't you hit the ball to right field sometime and try to get a base hit blue pond in once in a while he said Jack for the last 10 years I've been making a pretty good living going over that way said I'm not gonna change now I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot of the guys trying to hit one out now all right but probably not Fred Patek one into the little Kansas City shortstop with one out nobody on and it's outside it's 2 & 2 game now three hours and one minute along sweetu partek spank toward the whole spindly over [Applause] [Music] they're all good right now all tough right now you know how easy it becomes to bumble one in situations like that there's dollar signs and championship rings and diamonds all around that ball every time it bounces now Stanly moved quickly to his right scooped it up sure handedly made the long throw never wavered for his professional play two out batter is buck Martinez for our local station your break is coming but after this happening here's the pitch that buck hits it at the left centerfield is that some special night hasn't he in 304 oh he's on first base I think buck would like to make a career of playing against the Yankees so Martinez is on first base and will go back to the top of the order al Cowen's who fought his way off base in the eighth inning was sitting there when Brett delivered the big home run led off the eighth with a sharp single to left against ed Figueroa Eddie was removed on game grant Jackson and then game disaster a bloop hit by Walker the three-run homer by John's friend potential go-ahead run at first phase of Martinez now parents looked at the pitch from tip row and it is low the score is tied loyal six of the Yankee six the Royals getting even on George Prest three-run home run in the top of the eighth inning now I bet on the top of the night the winner of this game is the American League champion Alex whoops it's low again [Applause] [Music] two balls and no strikes and I would have to say that al cowlings is do very singled in the eighth just this hour he so do these wet [Music] I thought it [Music] tip drove watching Martinez off first [Music] watch the signs again [Applause] pitch misses three balls and no strikes with two out buck Martinez at first and Cowen's ahead of the pitcher Tidrow three of nothing Yankee fans ear itchy the folks in Kansas City Oh [Applause] you see him taking a situation like that try to get that Brunner down into scoring position take one extra pitch [Applause] Oh [Applause] so but Martinez goes to second base pouch to first base now it is Jim go for it Wohlford the right-hander who came onto hip and replaced folk kept in the lineup and Billy mark hustles to the mound Sparky Lyle and Doyle Alexander hit the Yankee bullpen if he wants one of them I don't think he'll take tin dro out Wohlford it by the way during the season hit only 208 with runners on base he hid at 270 with the bases empty throughout the 76 season yeah but he got a single a few minutes ago and did a big blooper and that set up the bread home run no question about it Billy Martin out of the dugout goes out and says you got to go after this man if he hit 408 208 or 108 you don't want to face George Brett because we all know we need to go [Applause] here's the Bickman George Brett crank it up in the on-deck circle [Applause] Jimmy Wohlford once you remember right now is you know he's going to get a pitch hit pitch to hit side well back into the crowd now looking back on that eighth-inning blooper of Walters remember easy to second-guess but we suggested then that rivers may have gotten the slow start on the ball if so he playing the ballgame if so what did you think rich what if it's inside [Applause] Jimmy Wohlford has all of left-center field enormous hole they don't figure least Mickey rivers Dustin Bailey white was much bigger than he'll go to throw gets it toward the shortstop third baseman nettles cuts it off tips it over here too that was bang bang as it was don't think cow is like have a look at it watch how close it really was little indecision on nettles part two what's this no not really straightened up could only throw to second I couldn't tell before well Joe Brinkman standing right there and made the call so to go to the bottom of the ninth inning tied at six six and we'll be back before baseball after this word from our local station and a look at that play at second base that ended the top of the ninth inning well I tell you that [Applause] yo in Ginza city gallons look disbelievingly Adam alright we'll go to the bottom of the ninth inning now and Mark littell is off the mound it'll be Tim please sandy Alomar and brake pedals so it'll be Alomar as the designated hitter a left-hander [Music] why did you use I was playing his question was now who steps up here [Applause] [Music] country there's a man last year very concerned big power-hitting Yankee first baseman steps up now they getting some more jumped off of the right-field area I've been clean it up ambulances pacing back and forth and littell gets the facts pitches to stay warm mr. Gordon that debris off the deal there's the line score we're in the bottom of the ninth inning this game is for the American League championship where are you out repeating it but that's what it is [Applause] the outcome what Kansas City has done in this series has been really exceptional when you stop to consider that one of their finest players the man who ordinarily ignites their offense and is so fleet-footed and such a threat on the bases Amos Otis from the very first inning of the first game has been out she unthinking fans following the father's dangerous instrument talons wonder again about the mentality of people will stoop to such an action do it our just telling it like it is alright now the plate umpire art France coming over to talk to Billy Martin sure it continues we're gonna have some at monning words from the public address system about it McCray was hit in the leg by an object thrown out there never Petros was involved in the things not like al I remember beer at Rogers video remember Pedro such a stick yes the public address announcements warning please do not litter the field please do not throw bubbles on the field throwing objects [Applause] both the players and the spectators and the Yankees request tip sportsmanship on the part of all disgraceful a throwback to that terrible situation of Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington Minnesota and the waning seconds of that star back led Dallas victory over the Vikings last year I remember one time we were playing the California Angels I was running off the field got a hit in the head with a fair kid I went and grabbed a guy out of the stands and I got sued [Applause] all right maybe we can get things under control and get on back to the object at the moment the American League Championship is Chris Chambliss walks to the plate endless sacrifice fly to left field run fielder's choice a double and a single bird and the doric are warm in the Kansas City bullpen Chambliss is so hot he have got his shirt unbuttoned he's in he mark littell [Music] Chris Chambliss has won the American League pennant for the New York Yankees dramatic game with overtones of that great six-game seven game - what a way for the American League season to end a spunky young Kansas City team look at them Bob Chris Chambliss what a season is had what a series he has there obviously was no opportunity for Chris Chambliss [Applause] [Music] for his life the club touch home plate but I'm sure it won't make any difference it'll be a tease that one right there it's a home run haul away it's dangerous central mr. chairman said record after record to shame they don't have a Most Valuable Player Award he hit that home run against the good tough young reliever so record indicated how difficult it was to hit home runs off Chambliss went up there with one purpose in mind that hits the ball he achieved his second home run of the playoff series his 11th hit of the playoff series his beef run batted in in the playoff series a remarkable individual effort by the man the University of California at Los Angeles [Applause] the field they literally came pouring out of the stands there were just no sense that's the coldest the crowd that saw the New York Yankees on Chris Chambliss homerun defeat the Kansas City Royals by the same score the Cincinnati Reds won the National League championship from the Philadelphia Phillies 7 to 6 and you can see how many people have spilled out over the field dick Tidrow will get the win in relief and Mark littell will take the loss
