convention if Lawrence itself to do so here you see Thurman Munson Hank Aaron President Ford Johnny Bench and Thurman Munson will go after the first ball as from now the president has to fall in each hand I guess we'll go to balls both right-handed or we see an ambidextrous throw remember in the opening game in Washington they used to throw the balls to all the players it is really a madhouse yeah I liked it better that way water when he threw one ball for both ball clubs another man scrambled a lot of guys we did the play one right one left ambidextrous rose by President Ford signing the balls of course for Munson in bench [Applause] we'll be back with the start of tonight's game from Veterans Stadium Philadelphia after this message water as the introduced consult around the floor I planted up there for all-star this year's American League and I'd like to say hello and I would like to thank all the parents who both condition I hope that I could do something to really make you feel proud of me I am wrought through Panama first baseman hi I'm George Brett Kendra's baby brother I play third base the Kansas City Royals from El Segundo California Thurman Munson can Ohio catcher hi I'm Freddy Lynn my hometown so Monte California and I'll be playing centerfield hi I'm Toby era hometown bet the Texas shortstop I'm rusty Staub I'm from the wall of Louisiana I'm gonna plan right deal hello I'm Bob grits from Long Beach California and I play second baseman Baltimore Orioles my spinach I live in mouth from Massachusetts and I'm a pitcher for the all-star game thank good I'm Darrell Johnson an old California manager of the American League all-stars there you see certainly one of the most versatile show business people in the history of show business Danny came from Brooklyn New York and of course part owner of this new Seattle franchise Bob Prince what about this defense for the National League well it's not as fast now as they normally will have but they'll have Lozinski and left and Foster will be out of position in centerfield Kingman will be in right they have Rose concepción Morgan and Garvey around the infield and Jones on the hill with bench behind the plate Randy Jones will come at him he's 16 and 3 and he'll have that sinker ball working and let's see how they try to work on him as on the floor from Detroit at 3:30 stands in here - offers 28 runs batted in [Applause] you will watch very carefully how Granny Jones will attempt to throw that sinker ball right after the eve every time he pitches the plate umpire Harry wendelstedt of the National League Jerry knew dr. the American League at first and the Olsen National League at second don dankinger of the American League Wow Randy Jones up from here let's enter with a 16 in Fremont Lafleur in his first all-star game that's the third hey Seth so he's stuck one through the left side I have a little situation here Bob Uecker because of the floor can fly he stolen 29 business he's got outstanding speed from the Detroit Tigers fine about Ron Lafleur that's time you got a breaking pitch for Randy Jones inside he ran to the left field pervasive also Bob Uecker isn't a psychologically advantageous from the first guy up base hits you know perhaps maybe the team Rusted team can hit this guy I go along with it one strike here's a rather interesting situation this is Rod Carew five-time American League batting champion but you know what his 10th all-star game he carries a plate average of zero nine five one strike to him no score and Garvey put it right at it Rock guru from got soon Panama canal's on now lives in Golden Valley Minnesota Lafleur at first rock group [Applause] [Music] one ball one strike Aroo now playing a first base for the Minnesota 20 you know you talk about this guy being a five-time batting champion Bob he has got outstanding power pays up inside Rose coming up tight on May 3rd the left side of the diamond the outfielder swung to the left of luzinski Foster and Kingman now postures out of position in center but he's over shadowing tore the line bounced left the right side there's a double play sure they got a and I'll tell you that's what Randy Jones was Uzi almost all night long one more time is Randy Jones with old slider that tailor-made double play ball Morgan concepción - really - Garvey no contest as to ruin - a 4-6-3 double play now here is young George Brett he's batting at 365 he leads the major leagues in hits with 122 and in May he said his goal for the all-star break was 120 so he's two over that there's that sinker incredibly funny one of his 82 games he's gotten three hits or more Brett of the Kansas City ballclub his brother Kenny pitching for the white shot no score two down first-inning Randy Jones and John bench going here in a battery against George Brett all three no strikes they have taken down one of the scoreboards here so that they could accommodate approximately 3000 more people for you know and he has put on so that's the first walk and the batter is going to be the New York Yankee catcher Thurman Munson batting at 3 1 9 on the year eight homers and 50 runs batted in well the outstanding players in the American League this know the Yankees I guess you'd have to say this their big RBI man it's not about what situation you get guys on base when you need the big base that's two outs Thurman Munson's a guy that knocks them in for the Yankees this is his fifth all-star game and he carries an all-star average of 286 on the season thus far for the Yankees a319 Yankees are force leading the American League East Thurman Munson now Brett at first up the left side over a Cassetti on and on the Morden for that familiar six for force out we go to the bottom half of the first inning here and pull it out here and the American League all-stars National League's oh hi Steve Garvey first base National League Tampa Florida hi I'm Joe Morgan I'm from Oakland California and I play second base for the Cincinnati Reds my name is George Foster my hometown is Lausanne California and tonight I would be playing center field for the National League all-stars Greg luzinski Prospect Heights Illinois left-field Johnny Bench Binger Oklahoma catcher Cincinnati Red Dave Kingman New York New York right-field hi I'm Dave Ekins thank you I'm from Venezuela not playing shortstop hi everyone I'm Randy Jones or from Poway California dear San Diego in the pitcher I the spark pianist and a manager nicely all stars in my hometown of Thousand Oaks California the starting national league team as they introduced themselves what about this defense pawprint well we're going to have her on the floor out in left field and Freddy Lynn in center rusty Staub will be in right field Georgie Brett will be a third Kobe Hara Texas would be a shortstop Bobby Grich to Baltimore will be a second rod crew out of Minnesota will be at first Munson behind the plate and on the mound the bird Federer choo starts his talking right now the batter Pedro [Applause] [Music] 10th all-star game for Pete and his eyes you know Petros already has 2664 hits if he figures by next year he'll get to the 3000 mark and Mensa I say he's got an outstanding chance one guy has been one of the outstanding hitters over Sookie come to a major league level [Applause] a shot of our favorite star citizen filled up he wants to play where he figures he's going to pitch each one of these national league batters he drools got a high fastball forming that time adrift at the center Steve Garvey stepping in and with a 300 batting average settle homers 45 runs batted in he made the 74 all-star team on a write-in vote for more than a million fans and he was the MVP he rose at first base I thought they're playing Garvey to pull the ball the gap in right center a little bit as Staub peels off towards the right-field line his daddy's here with him tonight that's it on the right side stop buddy can't get it [Applause] there's something right now he's driving previous to all-star games and two singles a double and a home run and believe it or not we've talked yesterday as you watch it again if it's Steve what about a triple become one of the few players to hit for the cycle in total all-star game and here his first time up triple and how Garvey has hit the disciple in all-star game play I say a mark pitchers is twice on both of the first two batters you his face it's not the way we've seen him fit to we had him a couple of weeks ago on a Monday night game he is upstairs tonight and he's got to hurt twice although rusty Staub put them into playing right field on that boy Joe Morgan standing in at 3:30 number seven and I feel exciting he in the bird contest they're going to play the infield back to organ popped him up shallow right field back goes bridge up Comstock Saab is calling bagging is Garvey here's the pump and a fool will hold him at third area see I cut shot a rusty stopping through that fall on the line of Thurman Munson no chance for Garvey to score that ball was destroyed right field I'm going to take a chance anyway with George Parker coming on next and his hand has dipped in there at 72 runs Givaudan marc fitt rich now looking in here and he's got a pop-up he's trailing by a run and Garvey's the third with only one out you know you talk about a draw here fit rich in his last three starts has drawn over 50,000 fans in Detroit and when he doesn't pitch the average only 18 per game austere weak ground ball down towards second rich up they'll throw him out he gets an RBI as Garvey comes in to score and the National League on top now to the [Applause] for only one reason this relay goes this DF coming up here [Applause] Sudan outfield swung way around of the left eye pop seller right going back for it Carew off the outside Hayes with it and that's it for the out to retire the side League all-stars they get two runs on two hits they don't stand anybody to nothin huh no one here's living into the opposite peel off the wall then we fought they look at it culminated comes in as well and of course goes out as well [Music] alright here at the auction funny land of the Red Sox batting at 324 six homers 34 runs batted in Randy Jones in the National leaguers leading two to nothing big chopped down first base foul ball you know one thing about Freddy Lynn last year he won 13 major awards including MVP Rookie of the Year he batted 331 hit 21 homers had 105 ribbies 47 doubles and he never went hit us in more than three straight games another foul written went to Southern California University on a football scholarship to play baseball for a great coach out there rod dado so have a how about this right down Frank Robinson coaching at first you mop over third beat up couch guy oh really make you ground ball ground ball that's one of the things the National rather the American League gonna have to do against the Randi John there you saw Fred Lynn try to pull a breaking pitch to try to hit that ball to the right field side and as we saw him in that little clip he's got the ability to hit the ball the opposite field popped up and it was out of play unless the wind brings it back in for them it does and it's high carbon right over the head of Johnny faster the song went up there in the string of it fought you on a hit by those fellows makes you try to bring it right back down to Bob yeutter well anytime that foul ball goes Obama's got that opposite spin that brings it back toward the infield that ball goes up behind the plate you've always got a chance and Vince Garvey made the play the bench and Garvey stayed right with it there's a fella you can talk about I think he's very under publicized toby hara the texas rangers vine shortstop for the Texas Rangers he's a was a bigger shortstops he's got power he can hit the home runs he's only the second shortstop in baseball history to hit 20 home runs during a season and steal 20 bases he's in there with eight right now fast toward third baseman heroes comes with across the Garvey pure now Randy Jones on a national league here in the second inning leading the American League by the score two to nothing now there's one other thing about this Randy Jones or he'll do if you've got the play time and you'll see it right now and stop he'll then go to his slider Jones is firing the ball upwards about 76 miles an hour and we'll tell you something else think about that and that's not too fast but that's the this we figured it out Bob dicus here one of our fine men at ABC went out and pitch the ball if the slice you can pitch it without a pit McGirt is 40 miles an hour now so 76 miles an hour isn't very fast but Jones still get you out I don't believe it'll raise a welt on you but it was halfway decent if you're going to get hit by a pitch you get hit by Randy alone that's a Bobby Grich there on deck out of Baltimore so rusty Staub who does not get in at all the ball two strikes you can see down in the American League second rating and the National League on top to nothing you stay right in there on the knees there was a manager there yes yes Penske the Boston Red Sox with Yankee catcher Thurman Munson that's Wallops the right field for a base hit [Applause] we're going to watch something interesting now rusty Staub will take off his batting gloves or at least it does in the regular season put him in his pocket and take out his sliding gloves when I guess for the all-star game ichika scoops with his regular glove here's a remarkable athlete as a fellow that is six feet two it's livable of the man that fight to play well if he does a second base he's one of the more aggressive the second baseman that I've ever seen talking about Bobby Grich he's got good speed he's got good power Bob and he's hitting 295 he's having a good year for the Baltimore Orioles well with two out rusty Staub at first on the second hit of the ballgame off Randy Jones stop a pretty good lead over there ball tailed away all two and no strikes stretch no restraint the holy love the second base there's a fish on deck they're not using the designated hitter in the all-star game check swing past the shortstop concepción and the Garvey for the power of the side no runs and one hit no errors and one left and we're getting ready now to go into the National League second thing with the score the nationally - never nothing on meeting mark spitters we haven't had a real we haven't had a chance to see him Dhoni groundskeeping work around the boundaries but if you've seen him pitch before and if not you may see him do that work the boundary over with his hands talk to the baseball talk to where he wanted to go tells it location he's got his axe are you seeing right now now he's getting it on and he's going to go against Johnny Bench bo on the bench bats 409 and his knife going into the ninth all-star game his it's been a real tough out Johnny has a problem you're batting at 234 nine homers 45 runs batted in he'll have to let go of the bat a lot of times you'll watch pivots work here now see how it makes let go of the bat with that right hand that hurts him Bob Uecker to swing that bat it hurts him to swing but not to throw he throws as well as he ever has but the hitting wise it hurt miss for this curveball it's a two nothing National League ball game row singled Garvey tripled him home fostered Browns it out and garbage gourd we're in the second that's lying the left field base hit for John bench [Applause] not likely to see John steel but you know he's not been thrown out in 21 consecutive tries that's a surprising statistic circle here skyking yes 30 home run babe king you need to strike out of here to clean out of sight hit it high off the right side and it looks playable by rock crew I'm there one down that'll bring up cincinnati shortstop Dave concepción batting on the Year 263 six homers and 33 runs batted in this is his third all-star game he's from Venezuela [Music] you couldn't get a seat in this beautiful Stadium it's just jam-packed just almost 64,000 there go on the balls hit back up the box Johnny Bench on his way to third as a hidden round right there say if concepción thanks to pitch bench you got the base gold too though they got him at first and third concepción hits one right back all acts lookout Birdman right back to the box benches at third concepción at first base that the National link has got something going going again here in the American League bullpen is getting busy very quickly 93 miles an hour that last ball was pitched but it went back through his legs a lot faster than 93 miles an hour you know we were talking about what a great drop bid which is five European Warner as and here's a great rod this guy right here Randy Jones is one whale of a draw too because on his home dates he averages about 11,000 or more attendance when he's pitching as against nights when he's not pitch do that [Applause] Sparky there's going to be I believe a short pass ball that will allow such young move up into second base Villa way to official decision got to be a fastball you look at it this fall is almost a strike and Paul really handcuffed Thurman Munson that was a good sinking fastball from Mark Begich that ball handcuffed Munson thought it was interesting after fit repeat the Yankees on national television here on ABC two weeks to go after the game Munson said well I don't really go for physics antics all of a little semi bushes Jones strikes out and they asked fit rich whose Pompton all he told in the comments if it says who's Munson about you great nettles you remember that Monday night game we all did great was talking to his back selling the bat to hit the ball for home run and he said later on if he popped up he forgot his back was a Japanese bat didn't understand English Pete Rose he singled up the middle and scored now with runners at first and second I rather second and third two down leading to nothing Rose of course a switch batter gets beat up short first baseman Rod Carew could reach just in time for the out to retire the side charging off the field and we've gone through two innings of play here the National League is on top two to nothing prairie region is on the scene in New York and he made the significance of any newsworthy things coming out of these there you will hear immediately from that and also when you how to look up into the Olympic situation in Montreal which perhaps might have look II was oh oh the Corbett was in Jersey she was not we're very happy to report there's the bird mark citrus and catfish hunter is warming up for the American League Warner wolf has gone on down and we'll be having some interviews about the colonel down a little later on meanwhile Tom Seaver was in now for the National League so without now a pinch batter there's going to be Hal McRae what kind of ears even having Bob Uecker this guy is one of the tough hitters in the American League also with the Kansas City Royals even uses the designated hitter for Kansas City but he can hit I guarantee you can hit his first look at Randy Jones tonight Oh Hal McRae is standing in my prey out of Kansas City is just batting at 3:47 you know that bears out exactly what Bob you just appointed up bats here in place of pitcher marc fitt rich a national league leading here in the top of the third to nothing didn't want to and it's a check swing Randy Jones taking his time out throws low but Garvey holes for the out our on the floor is getting ready to come up here talking about Ronald Florida Tigers centerfielder but playing left field here tonight in the all-star game we asked Ron Lafleur about right-handed pitcher mark fit rich well they just look at the bird is really crazy you know a young guys but like he's not really you know like we just everybody get along and uh he's just the type of guy to just keep everything going he's jumping around he's danced in the clubhouse he's hollering you know he he has a lot of girls around him stuff like this but you know we try to keep away from that because you know him met with a lot of girls a lot I'm just not gonna really help this career at all the Leslie trying to keep that at a minimum as long as we can do that like everybody's living up on which I'd look up with his dentures you know and like as long as he's a our teammate like we're gonna do everything in our power to try and keep him out of any shows just you know that may be around how'd you like to have a bodyguard like that you I'm brought up to mark citrus I believe Ron the floor is single in the 1st inning and enemas doubled up standing in now with one down and Jones just isn't that battle and picks up his first strikeout that's two down in the American League third inning that'll bring up rock true never play voted the all-star second baseman all nine seasons in the American League is now playing of course at first base for the twins there's that curveball Randy Jones is right around the knees he learned it get that sinker ball pitcher Bob Uecker down - no matter where you're standing just the right down your knees broke it battle now now he's gonna have to cover as morgan'll throw to Jones for the out Garvey had recommitted and gone to the opposite side to catfish hunter pitching up at the American League all-stars had fish in with a record of 10 eight this year with the Yankees fit rich went two innings for two runs four hits striking out on the walk Garvey on the bunt try pal well what's catfish's coming on a little better now Bob Uecker well he's always a slow starter but the Yankees haven't got a big lead in the Eastern Division cap each other good fastball good hard slider I think one of the few pitchers that you'll see throw a changeup off the slider he changes feeds on his slider so many times but he's got outstanding stuff he's another guy they'll pitch inside to to the right-handed batters and he's working here to Steve Garvey with a little flipper up the right side foul and Rock crew will guard that one in and there's one away I here's the way the scoring with Pete Rose led off with a base hit up the middle off mark Cedric Garvey then tripled the right on a ball that rusty found allowed to hit I am driving in Rose when the infield back posture drove in a run for the infield out on a groundout the second and that's it now here's Joe Morgan he flied to right back in the first inning catfish hunter make you at the ball on the ground a lot to 185 you ball two yo Morgan that's foul down the right-field line and out of play I think no is it all going here Hunter has the ability to make he hit the ball a lot on the ground he's got he's got good hard stuff everything he throws is hard Bob he's got the good fastball he likes to pitch downstairs you got a pitch downstairs to be successful but as I said he is not afraid to pitch inside and he got ripped there by Morgan as he went up a little [Applause] miss Morgan is just unbelievable he had drew over three billion and voting as you look at him there with that they said he now joins the only other two men to get these votes and that's the Reggie Jackson and Rod Carew and you're looking at the Gillette trophy for the most valuable player most votes I'm thinking five years George pops now and they'll play him to pull the ball this fellow does not look like he weighs 190 pounds but let me tell you he is now Morgan of course was a very definite but to be running he's already stolen 23 bases this year look at the lead he gets off that bag he makes the break in the balls it I want to feel like you know now that picnic area they have here in the fest Stadium is not one of the all's fair that's one of the ball girls here in Philadelphia there's that station on each line yeah but very to life a little area there and see that lovely young lady and a happy fan got the baseball an all-star souvenir this game really does it to you doesn't it that's it deep left-center field lanolin going for it so here's what floor and you can [Applause] [Applause] one more time campus hunter of basketball and George Foster you leave the major leagues of runs batted in you really got into a catfish hunter fastball and drove it out of here and deep left-center field and nationally now leads for nothing and here's dray grazinsky he hits a high howling fly left field Ron the floor has room on the warning fat and comes up there for the out - now you know before the ballgame he throws was telling all the writers from all over the nation and I mean there are here by the hundreds that consistently foster hits the ball harder than anybody internationally I could go along with that the we've seen now three times during the course of the season is some kind of strong Johnny Bench he single up back in the second inning National League leaving now here in the third inning for nothing they lit up finish nail it up catfish hunter there's this nationally power that we were talking about earlier with Warner and with the Bob you know eight sorry minor have 108 our home runs and 421 runs good at him that's firepower Bobby they're outstanding if they've got the big hitters on the nationally ballclub there's a long way to go into blogging oh it's not over that's a cinch and fosters first all-star game he got to be thrilled with that home run huh Johnny Bench and it's now ball one and strike two two down and on to the Oklahoma City where this season he's throwing out 26 to 4,700 attempting to steal it is a false our game he has 21 unbelievable stolen bases their numbers haven't thrown him out 21 trials would think that have been to this side and God let it go that bad again that's right shoulder really hurts but it's two big runs for the National League all-star on a home run by George Foster with Morgan the board and the Freeport I think National League is one of the great names in baseball there can be no denying Matt Seaver has one time lost five and is on a team that really Bob Uecker doesn't score too many runs for him but he is just say consistently fine performer well when you talk about power pitching you're talking about a pitcher like Tom Seaver outstanding fastball he's got outstanding control to go along with everything that he throws as you said Bob he's been one of the premier pitchers in baseball Randy Jones is of course now the pitcher of record wet free no runs two hits one strikeout in one walk so he'll be the pitcher of record as we head into the fourth inning with the American League sending up Brett Munson and Freddy Lynn so Tommy zebra will have his work at that one that's 17 here now too is our partner Bob Uecker all right Bob Prince thank you very much we start the American League fourth inning and they trailed by a score of four nothing as you look at George Brett his first time up he walked Randy Jones walked one and struck out one in the three innings any work [Applause] right on the regular season he leaves the major leagues and hitting 365 he is homered four times in 1935 runs there is a good Tom Seaver fastball strike ball now Brett got three hits and six consecutive games for May 8 that the 13th which could probably be a major league record ball one strike one to Bret as you look at tom seaver and he is tough [Applause] that was the express right by George Brett up around the letters and the fourth inning now we've got the honorary captains Bob lemon is coaching at first base for the American League at the air to right field Dave Kingman has got this one measured easy play for him one down about time-saver ease up around 96 miles an hour on our junk machine and that is getting up there in a hurry one down in the American League fourth inning and it brings up the catcher Thurman Munson I'd explain one thing Bob Uecker - as Horner will Phil be around with a shortly up if they starting pitchers could not go more than three innings and if you get into extra innings any last pitcher can go as long as the manager wants him to go or until he runs out of gas right Wow by Munson and that one got Johnny Bench don't forget the Olympics begin this Saturday with coverage right here on ABC two weeks Montreal's per year throughout face up my checking on Johnny Banshee got really ripped on it foul ball but that's going to be something you'll see this again this is why they are just one of those foul tips and just potty be good do anything about it I've got Johnny Bench up around the shoulder on the right side look forward to that I want a famous carpet Warner wolf will be there how it goes so at all it's got to be exciting we're all good at the fans in the background are hollering we want food after Johnny Bench got hit with that foul tip breaking ball is low it's 1 and 1/2 Thurman Munson you know talking about the Olympic squad love to be up there to watch to speak to room I did a little hammer throwing and I still 14 years old yeah 16 pound hammer I'll be done and we're in a truss ever since two balls and a strike to Thurman Munson the National League formed the American League nothing in the fourth inning in the air out of play by Munson you know I like for tea brewing out of course everybody going up there Donald why are they going to have about 400 people up there to cover the Olympics so it starts up here in a couple of weeks ladies and gentlemen it is going to be something two weeks of great coverage on ABC one ball and two strikes to Muncie Tom Seaver [Applause] there you see the object better brad'll in the American League centerfielder Monsen on the regular-season sitting at 3:19 for the Yankees eight home runs he is knocked in 50 runs is the Yankee captain short centerfield Dave concepción short stuff down named concepción the short stuff to see him go back down this will pop up off the bat of Thurman Munson one of the fine shortstops in baseball having a pioneer for Cincinnati that was a Tom Seaver slider vote inside Fred land his first time out back in the second inning fouled to the first baseman to nothing [Applause] the New York that's premier right-hander Tom Seaver in the air right field deep is kind of casting it out here for where [Music] [Applause] he throws one out here to see Christ [Applause] our game is to look at a happy friend Lim so I'll tell you Tom he got something up and Tommy has a good homerun pitch most good control pitches do and that makes it a four to one ballgame hairiest in the American League bench finally got something to cheer about that is Hal McRae right there here's Toby Harrow the Texas shortstop bullseye hair on the season hitting a 278 for the Rangers is homered eight times and knocked in 43 runs two strikes to him you know I just before the all-star break who's Ben Seaver and Matlack all appeared in the same game I'd like to have that lineup coming at you anytime or tonight upstairs on the right field side boy Harrow filed a tough it's that time good fastball from Seaver you know you looked at Johnny Bench looking he was still hurting from that filed slip that he took we might see Bob Boone in the next inning they'd love to see him here in Philadelphia in the air the second baseman Joe Morgan puts it away in the sides retired American League gets on the board here in the fourth thing they get a run on one hit the home run by Lynn at the end of four and a half innings four to one nationally given could be the winning pitcher Randy Jones pretty good four corners Randy I think the first couple and it wasn't me really at their vulnerable chance thank you oh yeah like last year damn so fast in the night that I really never worried about too much I got three quick outs it was all over but I got plenty of time to think about you know it's an A and it's even I got a little chance little upside but I'm 13 I started smoothing out a little bit I felt like myself again just our source says that thrilled I represent you know the National League like this and and be all over all over the country and she is play so well Randy did that account for the walk you know you've a verge only one walk per game and you walk Britt the first inning I think to lows basketball that through the river for the part aside thrown about four years I think you're just I was so pumped up and so excited about being out there that you know I just really couldn't smooth it out I able to flew that I don't have to get free up that in and I felt my better than if the game went on okay Thank You Randy Jones who at this point stance to be the winning pitcher if the National League should hold on to this lead back up to the booth well you saw Dave Kingman swing at three off catfish hunter one down he strikes out and it brings up the shortstop Dave concepción good breaking ball by catfish hunter nothing in one - concepción he had a base hit his first time up in the air left field coming on round the floor he is going to get there now he's got it the floor has played that ball little bit he backed up on at first but come on to make the catch they're doing something here they put a young man out there for them of Robin Roberts going to the Hall of Fame the coach at first base for the National League all-stars Robin Roberts the first place there is one of the greatest right hand pitchers I ever saw in baseball that's their Tom Seaver the pitcher good breaking ball by a hunter nothing in one severs not a bad hitting pitcher last fall nothing into the National League for the American League won we're in the fourth inning strikes him out the breaking ball by hunter easy inning for Kathy the National League fourth no runs no hits no errors and nobody left we've completed four for letting down naturally for the American League One mr. Daniel George Foster moves for right field and the shortstop the new shortstop for the National League Larry Bowa catching now for the National League Bob Boone replacing Johnny Bench there you see Bob Boone rusty Staub one strike to him the National League leads in the bar game by a score of four to one on the right fuel side foul two strikes two rusty Staub he singled his first time up to right-field you saw that wind kicking up there we got a handheld cameraman up on the top of this stadium headwind must be blowing 40 miles an hour [Applause] [Music] a ball and two strikes two rusty Staub there's a shot from that handheld cam in that magnificent great camera work up there to play by Scott as he faces the next teammate Tom Seaver spent years together with the New York Mets number nine for Tom Seaver right field another base hit for rusty stymies two out of dude [Applause] that is hit number four in the ball game for the American League and coming on now the second baseman Bobby grits the national league in the first inning a single by Rose a run scoring triple by Garvey and a ground ball by George Foster driving in a run made it to nothing in the third a two-run homer by foster after Morgan it's single put the National League in front for nothing fouled by Bobby Grich Bob Uecker along with Warner wolf and Bob Prince from Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia the 1976 all-star game Tim strikes to grip is Tom Seaver heats it up [Applause] the American League run came in the fourth inning when Freddy Lynn hit one out here off Tom Seaver that's where we are right now four to one national ball and two strikes Louise T out they're warming up there is a man who's got 9 million different potions and just show you all of it somewhere along the line Boston Red Sox right-hander Louis yeah while - strike two - Bobby Grich Baltimore Orioles second baseman hitting a - 95 years Harvard seven times enacting 23 runs third base side foul [Applause] that is Mickey rivers the on-deck hitter the New York Yankees centerfielder [Applause] on a play by Bobby grips hanging tough against Tom Seaver as you're looking at tom seaver it back up the middle Morgan [Applause] 4-6-3 Morgan Cola and Garvey printed on the American League I say one thing you'll watch this Pete here because Morgan just makes a great feed to ball gives you a chance to practice get out of a way of laughing what we call the American League when it looks like they get something gone the National League has turned their second double play into blogging sitting now Mickey rivers the New York Yankees centerfielder [Applause] once Franklin [Applause] rivers hitting at 310 for the Yankees is homered five times in 1939 rooms [Applause] talk about a guy who can really fly talking about Mickey rivers really turned things around for the Yankees are the slider from Seaver that got the inside corner he stole 25 bases all ready for the inky's as Billy Martin says it's been one of the great team efforts but this fellow's been a great part of it Mickey rivers - and I'm listening how to play left field side thank you Bob you got it you submit to the United States here 64 thousand people the all-star game a cream of everything they're planned they fall they're going right at it baseball attendance is up it's unbelievable [Applause] Alton's trying to as you look at mark pigeons and we're going to have a little talk with him in a couple of minutes got him fever strikes out Mickey rivers that takes care of the American League in the fifth inning no runs one hit not allowed at the end of five and a half nationally for American League One thank you Bob hard fingers right here mark kind of a rough two innings what's your reaction to it like that's the way : I don't know I was happy to be here I'm happy to have my teammates that got me here I did it the idol ball and push the best luck because it'd be nice to know season damn I didn't show what I could do though you want to face it the Rose the first guy off base yet did that affect you no no you got to face it last time the expedition game first time off I don't know that guy knows my pictures I dare listen you always all these complete Dame's and you had to come out after - would you like to go back out there again yes I would because I love being out there and you know just got to bring our team and go play with all these guys at Smith you know just meet them I like the first time of a film talking to one I'll at ease straight I want a great game paws up art but then did they knock the elf at the mill okay mark thanks for coming on now back up to the booth hey Bros leads it off here in the bottom average of fifth inning and let's take a look at this hard driving Pete Rose [Music] be really not that for bossy over like guys try to win the Paul he had the plate blocked and yet either be safer out and this what happened I got there a split second before the ball reached him and that was that benefited me because they will knock him out of the way and I got the plate and I was safe we won the ball game I wouldn't try to hurt anybody matter of fact he was at my house until 2 o'clock and in the morning the night before and it's just a shame that his sort of wrecked his career because he was another Johnny Bench at that time and he played the rest of the season of the separation of the shoulder and they they're up in the same set he's a fine fella Pedro is talking about rape Washington oh it's up where that really put Posse on the shelf and kind of turned his career around lineup changes now for the American League Carl Yastrzemski is playing in left field Mickey rivers is come on to play right field a new shortstop mark belanger Louie teon is pitching to his battery mate from the Boston Red Sox Carlton Fisk [Applause] roll singled and scored in the first inning his second time up he bounced to first switch-hitting Petros right centerfield going to be evasive extra bases for rolls all the way to the wall on the second row you can apply for free Bobby's relay [Music] [Applause] he froze does not know what it means to slow down he often says that if he slows down he's going to get hurt I'll watch this headlong slide it tells you all you ever have to see and that's just about what you always see when you're watching Pedro play ball areas digging around second one more time he heads for third and he is in as George Brett thinks to throw stunts give a define relay but I want to tell you something that's great camera work cutting in there Steve Garvey breaking ball outside from Louie teon the National League for the American League won in the fifth inning Luis Tiant [Applause] ball one in strike one Steve Garvey a triple by rose is now two out of three of the blogging [Applause] all two and strike one is T on most inside of course is that American League in Buda come up you they are playing up to try and stop another um good breaking ball by Luigi I told you before he gives you all kind of motions out there turns around looks in the outfield these all arms and legs tough guy to follow count is even 2 Garvey 2 & 2 [Applause] the time is called Garvey stepped out for a moment and he just missed with that fastball he's run the Council on Garvey Thrym too [Music] third base side backhanded Brett fair ball throw in the dirt peccaries I'll find play on both ends by Brett Astros in the dirt and Rod Carew dug it out as look at the Minnesota first baseman the backhanded grab by George Brett Rose had to hold it 30 almost tagged him as he went back to the bag Joe Morgan [Applause] Morgan is 1 for 2 in the ball game this will be the second baseman Bobby grid 2 down as peons it's tough [Applause] coming out Rose still at third base and it brings up the right fielder now George Foster he started the ballgame and centerfield is knocked in three runs for the Nationals first sitting on a ground ball in the third you know two run homer good breaking ball from TR strike one foster with 72 RBIs on the regular season 17 home runs 327 batting average boy what a year he is having for Cincinnati [Applause] you almost food by Carlton Fisk as you look at Sparky Lyle Yankee left-handed relief ace is he Sparky stance on the year 17 saves for New York Walter and scuffle on out of pocket that is Greg luzinski the ball and Alphaeus Phillies left fielder Luis Tiant [Music] he throws the runner at 30 let it off with the triple the countdown two balls and two strikes to Fosters [Applause] well our colleague Warner wolf is back upstairs all right Bob what did I miss in three seconds what did I miss Randy Jones is something yeah two balls two strikes to foster [Applause] while Angela short stuff I would a job by Tiana after giving up the leadoff triple the feat rolled no runs one hit one left we'll be back with horribly six all-star game after this word from our local stations are there you see it go ahead Bob lineup changes there you see the count of Bonnie feels go the San Francisco Giants is now on pitching for the National League al Oliver is gone to play right field Tony Perez will be the new first baseman for the National League and [Music] Mike Schmidt is a new third baseman coming out the infield now Dave cash at second base as we go to the top half of the sixth inning with you American League trailing by a score of four to one there you see Carl Yastrzemski three-time American League batting champion certainly one of the most personal players ever to play in the American League let's take a look at yaz now course remember he came up was a great left fielder and then they moved him over to the first base and he certainly he plays both as well and all-star pleased that ball in Boston like nobody else or perhaps like Ted Williams did you know once in a while you scrimps he will lose his temper here he was called out on strikes look simple look what he does to the plate he covers it up throws his hat walks off Carl Yastrzemski areas coming in and going out look at this catch this is in the all-star game robbing bench you've all run that was in Washington in 69 as you look at Carl Yastrzemski my nephew school is no balls and two strikes to him the National League for the American League won were in the sixth inning from a jam-packed veteran's stadium one ball and two strikes I'll tell you this the Philly fans have what they came for we've got five Phillies on the field right now Schmidt boy cash Boone and Lozinski breaking ball inside all five Phillies picked in this game are in the game right now two balls and two strikes to yes in the air short left field going out for larry ball is there near the foul line Larry Bowa the shortstop for the Phillies picks second it concepción but you won't convince the Philly fans that a second today self-made switch-hitter was normally a right-handed hitter all his life and very late fact his last year in the minors switched around left-handed Rod Carew the first baseman has hit into a double play and bounced to second five-time American League batting champion he won four in a row good fastball by mano few schoo you know Bob I remember years ago it was Carew's first year sam neill he was managing the twins and he wanted to play Quilici and Calvin Griffith sent a directive right down from the top and said I want Carew at second base I'll never forget the game was against the Senators he went five for five and he's picnic ever since boy he is some kind of hitter two balls in the strike is mine a few school misses thing about Carew the sium team stances so many times he has a different stance with men on base left-handers right-handers he opens up closes his stance it's out of a deeper crops three and one now I'm on a fuse go behind is what rod crew so the American League has a runner on with one down here in the sixth inning and it brings up the Kansas City Royals find third baseman George Brett so it was interesting that right hitting 365 as you see here very candidly said yes I do check the box score to see what Rod Carew did because if anybody is going to catch me it's right through well it's a tribute to Rod Carew - I'll tell you that in the air long run right centerfield sir Daniel is going to get there he's got it two down [Applause] let's go down now to our colleague Bob Prince and Joe Morgan okay Bob it's a pleasure to have a young man here just tied Reggie Jackson right through Joe Morgan congratulations on being selected with three million votes that's a great honor for you yeah it's a great honor Bob you know I didn't know I had that many friends around the country but it's a great honor and one other quick question how's your teammate John been well you got caught pretty good right on the ball here in the shoulder and I'm afraid it's going to be hurting for quite a while well I'm sorry to hear that Joe Morgan thank you very much you're great fun at the game of baseball good luck to you right thank you well now let's go back up to our colleagues in the booth throw to first base and the runner Rod Carew back safely Carlton Fisk the Boston catcher wide breaking ball grant by Bob Boone Mike Carlton Fisk who's the guy many people say makes the Boston Red Sox club go leader type catcher on the season Carlton Fisk is hitting at 255 900 runs he's knocked in 31 good fastball hey you saw a good shot of Mont a few schoo as you watch right now and of course the American League they call fit richer character but in the National League this is the counterpart Ma difuse go you know he got that name he pitched for Amarillo and they call him the count of Amarillo the minor leagues and then of course they changed him when he came up and here's a guy that makes predictions once predicted he would shut out the Dodgers rerunning and Boone dropped the ball it's going to be a stolen base all the American League trailing by a score of 4 to 1 they sent Rod Carew with two down is at second with a stolen base in scoring position made a prediction last 4th of July that he would shut out the Dodgers won nothing believe it or not he did so beat mr. Smith 175 in the air playable the catcher Bob Boone fires the mask out of the way what's the Landis side retired Ericson League in the six no runs no hits one left at the end of six and a half innings Nationals for Americans one regardless of what goes on this big game of ours of baseball that survives and this all-star game is living proof of it it certainly is it's on quite a show here in Philadelphia tonight what about your reaction to the ball game itself well other than the homerun I just came up I think I'm very very happy the way things are going and you feel Tom that you're coming back into the shape that you were I hope so I didn't pitch very well I don't think early in the year but thanks for coming around one thing I missed tonight I missed the pitch I thought he was going to get down and redo that mounted everything he's really a looked like a fine young pitcher to me well he is and you'll see it some other time thank you very much Tom Seaver good luck to you let's rejoin our colleagues upstairs Greg luzinski leads it off here in the National League sixth inning I believe I said the end of six and a half it's at the end of five and a half I'm off heat up my first all-star game the 1976 all-star games being brought to you as an exclusive ABC sport was called right now 5 seconds to allow our stations to identify themselves the National League leads by a score of 4 to 1 they got things underway in the first fitting a rolls single a triple by Garvey and a ground ball by George Foster made it to nothing they added two more in the third on a two-run homer by George Foster is UC Rod Carew make a fine running catch in right field the American League run scored in the fourth inning when Fred Lynn it went off right-hander Tom Seaver Bob Uecker along with water wolf and Bob Prince from a jam-packed Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia our 200th anniversary a big sign out here happy birthday America our Bicentennial and where else but Philadelphia the all-star game 1976 say Czar Sergei no I want to hear this guy is having for the Houston Astros one man out in the national league sixth inning why are they expressed by luigia eating it up two strikes to Cedeno area see the stolen bases Bicentennial I breaking ball frontier ball one strike two see on outside ball 2 is Frank to [Applause] shot a Carlton Fisk studying the signs down for Louie Tiant [Applause] he's run the comp old friend too at this point in the ball game it might be interested to note that both managers Darrell Johnson of the American League and Sparky Anderson but nationally each have used exactly 19 players with nine remaining so both have perhaps showed off the players in an effort to give all the players a chance to play still for counter Cedeno as you look at this huge crowd at veteran's stadium in Philadelphia this place has been jumpin all week counting The Secret Service people of the 64 thousand pounds hang on by Krauss and Krista's Franco [Applause] [Music] on Saturday Olympic coverage to give the 230 decent on the opening ceremony that on ABC's Wide World of Sports the foreman Frazier fight or watch said then at 8:30 Saturday night highlights of the opening ceremonies and a preview of the Olympics that's this Saturday on ABC in [Music] the air flavell mark volanges a strike stop in short centerfield what's it away and the sides retired the Nationals get nothing in the six at the end of six full innings of play National League for American League One and thank you Bob pretty Linda leadoff fearless seventh the American League trailing four to one Lynn homer to right field off Seaver in the fourth inning Lynn followed by Belanger and a pinch-hitter 40 on al Oliver has moved over to left field Cedeno and Center and grippy comes into the ballgame to play right field for the National League the infield has Perez a first then three Philadelphia Phillies cache at second Bull and short Schmidt at third and Boone behind the plate with a count of on a few on the mound outside for a ball [Applause] Rick Rhoden of the National League warming up from the Dodgers [Applause] young gentleman from Long Branch New Jersey and that's it for Freddy Lynn so Lynn fans and that will bring up mark belanger you know I was interested Bob I don't know it was just my feeling but here's mark Belanger playing in his 13th year in the major leagues if I was surprised suddenly to find out that this is the Landrieu's first all-star game after 13 years I'd say he's one of the fine fielding shortstops in the American League he's done an outstanding job for the Baltimore Eels he Key's that fine infield over there Brooks Robinson really hadn't played that much now and this guy I guess is really the kingpin over there now you see it I may say so the number one sports network in the world a 1-1 to Belanger is outside for a ball Porto on the American League trails Foster the big guy so far who let that guy in Holly Foster the big guy so far with the two-run homer and the RBI groundout popped up cash going back it in comes grippy grippy calls and there's two down now let's go into the dugout and we have Bob Prince along with Steve Garban well Steve my friend you got yourself a big triple that must have made your wife Cindy pretty happy I think so father I think that'll be for the new baby and I'm looking forward to getting on tomorrow morning and the things take their course on the next week it's been great fight here and helping especially well I'll tell you one thing Steve you play this you heart and I had a sort of laugh a little but your friend rusty Staub went down on the ball issues lifetime for a triple well that's where I was planning you got to check the conditions who's out there to pitch and then we go from there Steve must go back upstairs okay all right thank you Bob and Steve Garvey by the way as we pointed out now with two singles a double a triple in a home run in free all-star games this is butch winegar the youngest player ever to participate in the history of the all-star game he turned 20 in March an interesting young man a switch hitter Harold Delano which liner ger Delano RUC manager Sparky Anderson talking to John McNamara sandwiched between on the other side is Daniel's are a lot of brains down there how they got things going now why teen mark really likes this guy gene Mauch of course the manager of the Minnesota Twins he likes which wanna ger [Applause] number two draft choice for the twins and I'll tell you he has to be considered in the Rookie of the Year running along the FID rich I guess Thompson the first Facebook and Willie Randolph this guy has really done an outstanding job you know when you take a rookie especially a catcher and sticking behind the plate at a young pitching staff at Minnesota take a young catcher young staff to try to work things out together low ball 3 3 & 2 2 winegar another natural right-handed hitter and his father very instrumental in making him a switch hitter 3 2 2 winegar President Ford here to throw out the first ball has moved into the box of vice president of the Phillies William Giles pritu to winegar [Music] so far the American League shutout except for the home run the right-field by Freddy Lynn off Tom Seaver they see the count taking off the side ok he likes this one 3-2 to put all four [Applause] you know here's a kid we spoke to him before the game is that look I didn't even know if uncle could be on the ball thought they said when I made it to the boat I think I are going to stick around when they pass June 15th it was happy to be there and now he's in an all-star game really just an incredible first six months for butch winder here on first base here's Phil garner the second baseman of the Oakland A's and of course garner in there for Willie Randolph who was injured on a pickoff play couple weeks ago in New York the count has just thrown that ball 87 miles an hour this little blow severs super was heating up around 96 the one strike pitch to gone or out of play you know all the trouble on the Oakland A's ballclub this year all of a sudden they've started to come around this guy has been a big part of them you know when they did green left the Oakland A's one of the outstanding second baseman's for Oakland Green was one those guys have threatened to quit every year and would come back he finally did quit and Phil garner took over and did an outstanding job that's it for Phil so amount of usko strikes out to in this city and we go to them let's call it the home seventh inning here in Philadelphia the National League leads it four to one Warner catfish and Thurman one of you two gentlemen mind commenting on what you think about the new settlement with a six-year deal and the year option now how does that strike you John why has heard over the news is not settled well we heard that it's been pretty well ratified by the baseball proposed by the ballplayers and it does appear that the owners are going to do to have the players ratified intercepted that all right on the player side cat I think it's great you know be playing without a contract this year without their pitching plan and everything and I think if we settled it like you said I think it's great because I think the players can play it out of these thurman how about you well I think it's going to add some security you know especially to the players I think is give me more three employer contracts for a couple players you know their families won't have you know just being able to settle in one plate I think the owners you know really believe now that the Players Association is a real thing you know we're a strong unit and you know it's just going to be a little bit you know cohesive now instead of you know each person going in their own direction okay Thurman Munson catfish hunter the New York Yankees now let's go back upstairs I thank you gentlemen here we are in the bottom of the seventh Bowl leading off from the Phillies four to one National League leads in an interesting situation Tanana the new pitcher of the American League went over just before Bowa came up went over to third baseman Don money who of course they used to play here in Philadelphia and was a teammate of Bowa and said Larry a rather Don how do I pitch to Barry Larry oh this is the way one in one guys one of the outstanding pitchers in the American League Frank Tanana the California Angels all hard stuff good overhand curveball good fastball I'll tell you what he's one of the few pitchers you know a lot of strikeout guys say well I don't really try for strikeouts but he says hey I try for strikeouts it's a feeling of power outside pitch fouled off 2 to 2 Larry Bowa Schmidt is on deck followed by al Oliver National League with two on the first and two in the third you know you look at a guy like Frank Tanana you got to wonder what kind of winner he would be on a on a Yankee ballclub a contending block Phillies ballclub the any club that is really contending water because I said he has got outstanding stuff he led the American League in strikeouts led the majors a matter of fact last year in strikeouts with 269 finished fourth in the sy Young Award voting last year he's cut out 17 Texas Rangers in the ball game last year three to Nepal and in the right-field Mickey rivers on the run he's got it kahlúa flies out the rivers in right feel and here's Smith now Smith this year as you know in a ball game in Chicago in a game in which the Phillies trailed at one time 13 to 2 Smith came on to hit four home runs in Wrigley Field and you know he made an interesting comment he said the game was so lopsided being 13 to 2 at the time he just went up felt so relaxed like it was batting practice dealing there was no chance to catch the cup but of course what happened four home runs in that ballgame the state by the way courtesy of our good friends at WGN television in Chicago or home runs for Mike Smith against the cup and the Phillies won that ballgame 18 to 16 [Music] [Music] one one two schmidt high-tech it's short the throat of kuru the two down six to three for scoring and here's al Oliver hey looking at Freddy Pontic five-foot-four in short stuff in the Kansas City Royals you know size means nothing when you're talking about this guy he's got one got to be one of the strongest strong arms of any shortstop that I have ever seen [Applause] al Oliver the Pittsburgh Pirates and there's kuru the flip the Tanana and that's it for the National League all-stars in the bottom of the seventh so as we move on at the top of the eighth-inning as we see American League manager Darrell Johnson the score it's the National League for the American League One we'll be back with more the 1976 all-star game after this word from our local stations also changes in the field for the American League actually excuse me for the National League at shortstop Russell goes into short stuff now that means excluding the pitchers the only National League players who have not been in this ball game here we are on the eighth inning Swisher bake McBride and Ron say otherwise Sparky Anderson has used everyone excluding the pitchers rivers will leadoff for the American League in fact for Gerald Johnson excluding the pitchers except for Chris Chambliss and Amos Otis everyone is play Mickey rivers grounded out there's only time at bat watch rivers if he does at this time after a pitch many times will flip this bat like Abbott wanderer excellent bat control sometimes when he starts to go halfway around or fouls a pitch back to see Carlton Fisk in the American League dugout Tanana sitting next to him vilandra and Freddy Lynn Rodan an interesting story is a 23 year old young man he had osteomyelitis as a youngster wore a brace on his right leg but he was nine years old wore it for three years and it was caused by an accident and he stepped on a pair of rusty scissors and later had to have an operation only oppositely so both legs would be even and here he is in the major leagues Rick Rhoden hey you see woody Fryman warming up in the National League bullpen used to play of course here in Philadelphia inside the rivers maybe you saw the Olympic arm patch on woody prime enforcement lamont rial Expo where we will be beginning Saturday Olympic coverage here on ABC the two to two rivers out of play they should just joined us the American League only run of the night a home run by Freddy Lynn hey you see the symbol the Olympic symbol on the right shoulder of woody Fryman National League the two-run homer Bob Foster Garvey tripled in rows and then Garvey scored on a ground ball Bob Foster and that's it four to one we're in the eighth inning Jones Seaver Montgomery and now rodent of the National League this is Mickey rivers for the 2-2 count and Rodan off the mound he'll have to hurry and he's safe see that one coming all the way as soon as Mickey rivers hit that high chopper to rile them out Rodan got off the mine quickly Mickey rivers chopped down on that ball at high hopper brick road forget it no chance on astroturf ow maybe on natural grass rodent has a chance [Applause] here's just crumbs key who popped out in the sixth inning you know you're talking about grasping the artificial turf that fall on the grass it kills it lays around there the catcher might be able to make a play on it even on the artificial turf as you said rivers normally a threat to steal but of course probably will not do so with the American League trailing 4 to 1 here in the eighth minute Carl Yastrzemski certainly one of the greatest hitters in the history of baseball this one batting title by two ten thousandth of a point when Alex Johnson beat him out the one strike pitch two years outside Peru is on deck followed by Brett unless of course Harold Johnson makes some substitutions he has Chambliss and Otis who have not played excluding the pitchers there you see Carew the National League has Perez at first cache at second the shortstop is russell and schmidt from the phillies of third base oliver and left's the daniel and center and grippy and right Rick Rodin's fastball on our judge machine now up around 91 miles an hour so he's heating up pretty good anything above 85 86 miles an hour is very very good and Yastrzemski could be to Russell to Perez shallow play and members took out Russell but Russell made the double play anyway an excellent claim on Russ Eliza's sea rivers really knocking over liquor Russell here's rivers and Russell is hit actually before the throw but still gets it all for the double play I want to tell you I believe he could be the Mickey rivers that Time Warner because he he had to throw in plenty of time as he comes across the bag but rivers is right there and almost really ripped him apart two down and here's kuru kuru oh for two tonight grounded into a double play in the first inning and grounded out in the third he walked in the sixth battle play a ball in the strike to Rod Carew their double play for the national league there you see Carl Yastrzemski [Applause] I let off the fins well I'll tell you they've had something to cheer about all season 1 1 2 Carew that'll be out of play [Applause] you know you talk about great hitters certainly Carew's got to go down a long whoop description you realize there's eight batting titles batting back to back to stretch scheme peru you know a lot of people have said about Rod Carew water that if he wanted to change his hitting style a little bit it could be a 35 home runs a year hitter I - Carew gone money is on deck two outs here in the eighth the nationally going for the 13th and the last 14 all-star games and five in a row the two to two Carew is high for a ball [Music] National League in complete charge so far burro's let off the ballgame with a base hit Garvey fallen to the triple and the national aid is never trailed the 3-2 to Carew left-center field Oliver back that's it so the American League ghoul runs one hit no errors nobody left we go to the bottom of the 8th inning one more chance for the American League all right josh is just single to left field and here's Tony Perez it's four to one National League leading bottom of the eighth inning I'd like to see a like to see Hubert Humphrey join us maybe next week for people just announcing job here sure I'd like to see him leg out a triple and I'd be great there's no game we'll be back of course on August the 2nd following the extensive Olympic coverage for Montreal cash at first base Carew holding this is Tony Perez the old-time Cincinnati RBI leader and of course the Philadelphia fans good night like nothing more than to see mr. cash attempt to stolen base Frank Tanana working for the American League there you see cash Tanana followed fit rich hunter and Louis T on the one ball pitch to Tony Perez case you joined his federate stands to be the losing pitcher at this moment he went two innings and really was not as effective as we had seen him before allowing four hits including the two-run homer to foster a triple to Garvey a single to Rhodes excuse me hunter gave up the two-run over the Boston so all the two runs on four hits charged the fiddlers hunter went to innings two hits two runs he ah'd the most effective pitcher so far for the American League two innings one hit no runs for swarming up in the National League bullpen fingers in the American League bullpen blow a ball at Tony Perez two balls and a strike once again everyone has played for the American League excluding the pitchers except for Chambliss and Otis nationally everyone is played excluding the pictures except for Swisher say and McBride two balls strike pitch to Tony Perez and that'll be ball three throw down the first Bob what do you think about so far and of course including this game the domination of the National League over the American League I don't think even if you were not objective I think the most die-hard American League fan would have to agree the National League the free one the farest fouled back the National League has been superior over the National the American League it seems the Warner you know with the National League clubs and the all-star games it seems somebody gets our to base it and somebody cranks one out of the ballpark and always shoots them out front very quickly it seemed to jump out in front of these and these all-star games very quickly in the American League they seem you always be playing catch up baseball and it takes their game away from the hitting around the stealing three to two Perez is high for ball four let's go down to Bob Prince now with rusty Staub all right Warner thank you very much rusty you played in six all-star game do you think the American League will ever win another one of these games yes Bob I don't you know I think there's been a tremendous amount of building trading lately and especially last five or six years and coming over here all I've seen is some really some great athletes and American League and they're maybe a touch more or fastball to the National League but it's not that great a difference and maybe you know out here today the nationally gone up was a little more powerful in ours but I think make it a little more speed and you know it's just one of those games when you got so many good people together who knows what's gonna happen but it's amazing at the national attend so well for so long all right rusty Staub thank you very much now let's go back upstairs to our colleagues all right thank you Bob two on nobody out we're in the bottom of the eighth 34 to won the National League leaves cash at second Perez it first one strike to Bill Russell the shortstop of the Dodgers and that could be to money to garner to Carew double play around the horn as they say six four to three if you're scoring and on the play cash goes to third bouncing ball third base side Brewer third baseman Don money thick straw in a gonner at second and watch Phil Garner's turns of double play back to purse tonight for the American League the National League has turned 3 in the barging let's make that 5 to 4 to 3 of destroying here's Brittany of the Cincinnati Reds one of the 7 Reds playing tonight 7 Reds and 5 Phillies 12 of the 28 players either a red or a filly and not one picture that tells you something about the power of the starting team on both ball clubs and of course let's face it certainly barring a collapse you've got to figure those two clubs are going to meet for the National League pennant or to one National League leading trying to make it five in a row and 13 of the last 14 the pitch to Griffey tries to punch it into left field and it's fouled out of play and of course you'll see the playoffs right here on ABC American and National League playoffs I guess we got to think of a step forever barring a collapse by the Yankees our Kansas City that's your American League playoff all four clubs really and strong positions at this point the two strike pitch is outside to Griffey looking at looking in on Carlton Fisk Frank Tanana made it group you look awful bad on a breaking pitch the pitch before that last one let's see if Carlton Fisk comes back with a left hander the to strike one ball pitch to Griffey and I'll place it in the left centerfield cache scores a national league lead five to one and now four of the five runs batted in for the National League have been batted in by the Cincinnati Reds three by Foster one by Griffey the other by Steve Garvey there you see Carew and Griffey and finally speaking those playoffs this will be the first time in the history the playoffs that all the playoffs will be seen at night during prong time or some of the day but the night games will be in primetime five to one National League leading here Cesar Cedeno Tanana to the stretch Griffey at first two outs inside now we told you earlier that Frank Santana is one of the harder throwers in the American League Bob Boone on deck he had our judge machine we've got him around 95 miles an hour oh that's his fastball Griffey at 1st with two outs the fish the studio is a strike well chewing Frank Tanana more players getting away from the tobacco and more gun shooters now what did you choose I chew tobacco but there's less players getting sick now cool the hockey for a ball is today Joe I chew tobacco I got hit in the throat a couple of times the foul balls and actually really did swallow it I kind of got away from it after them bottom of the eighth five one National League the two ball one strike pitch disease our Cedeno goofy at first outside for a ball let's say looking ahead the ninth inning if Daryl Johnson does go to the bench and place Chambliss a notice if he does everyone will have been in the game excluding a five of the American League pictures National League to take it a step farther even they have 123 the last 29 all-star games just completely dominating the all-star classic and it didn't start out that way American League won 12 of the first 16 [Music] [Applause] last time the American League won a ball game 1971 I know they've been doing different between water because their national league is really dominated as you said and I can I go back to what I said before they jumped off to a two-run lead in the first inning as you look at it right there the National League 27 wins and the American League a team with one time three to two Cedeno with Griffey at first and two outs there goes Griffey good shot [Applause] [Applause] so Steve's arts titania was a 2-run homer breaks it wide open a 3-2 Frank Tanana fastball and Cedeno got it all you'll see his trim ski go back to the wall no chance for this one it's now 7 to 1 National League over the American League and again the home run ball has really hurt him you know Hobbs you said a Frank Tanana fastball I thought you were going to say a Frank Tanana Pat ball because that's what that was right down the middle 91 miles an hour I think it went out twice is fair you know you you talk about the guys some guy really heating up one he brought on a good point you don't have to swing that hard you don't have to pit don't have to hit a ball at harder they throw the off-speed stuff you got to furnace a lot of your own power butts today and you hit that ball nice there's Bob Boone the Phillies catchy and of course the partisan Philly fans food Johnny Panks when he was introduced in case you missed it because they felt boom should have been the starting catcher I thought it was interesting that Vince himself a man and gentleman that he is that look if I was a philadelphia fan I would agree with them after all the guys out hitting me by 75 points right-field Mickey rivers has it range and that's it for the National League but they scored twice on the two-run shot by Cesar Cedeno and we go to the ninth inning with a National League leading 7 to 1 this is twenty nine-year-old Ken forced the only relief pitcher picked by manager Sparky Anderson from the Houston Astros and you talk about an earned run average he's got at one point 99 Kenny force the brother of Bob Forsch and this is his big season ten for the Houston Astros Ron Cey is going in to play third base for the National League so that means only Swisher and the bride have not appeared for the National League there you see the penguin and Chris Chambliss apparently will get a shot he came out of the dugout and went back in this is done money and for the American League Chambliss and Otis excluding five pitchers and the only fellas not to play tonight all you see this guy every day Bob yeah he's having a fine year for the bird money a third base a couple years ago he had an outstanding year led the league in fielding just did everything he's a fine feeling third baseman popped him up easy play for second baseman Dave cash one out the night sitting let's go down to dugout Bob Prince father great strong men in baseball Greg luzinski Greg guy you know all the scouts around the American and national leagues say they'd rather play the Cincinnati Reds in here Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series that turn you on or off well I think if we get the playoffs with Cincinnati is gonna be a tremendous series that we have our Layton series with two good defensive clubs I think of pitching will tell the story and you know it's just gonna be a great series but I'm sure a lot of people fear the Cincinnati red lights Greg thank you very much you're a great star and let's go back upstairs to my colleagues all right thank you pop this is Chris Chambliss who loses the fat and the ball the shortstop Russell throw to first two down so Chambliss gets in the ballgame leaving only Havis otis excluding the pitchers let's see if otis comes out and i can make everyone playing and here comes otis so i like a fine gesture watch it again watch the replay a broken fat flashed a gun on Bill Russell the Dodger shortstop as he throws out Chris Chambliss from the left side two down and here's a Miss notice so the entire Finch is cleaned out for the American League and of course Willie Randolph who was named to the club could not play because he was injured so they can all respect to the losing manager Darrell Johnson at least he did play everyone that he could everyone accept five remaining pitchers otis hitting at 281 12 home runs this season 53 runs batted in Amos Otis 7:01 National League leading to outs of the night otice of course came over love that was a third baseman and they traded him the Kansas City and a joke boy deal and here now in a seventh year lifetime batting average 281 I'm he lost 20 pounds last year at tonsilitis Sparky Anderson taking a pup celebrating his victory Red Auerbach used to do it that's right he lit it up when it was ready to win it souvenir for somebody there you see I believe that stick root Elizabeth Palmer filly now working for the Braves and the pitch to Otis strikes him out the ball game is over the National League wins again let's go to five foot all right you and grandma corner here I am with Sparky Anderson Sparky - this brew that the National League is a bearded American if I asked for that five I could kill it it's just great to win and then really nationally is a great great league I'll stick that I don't know of another league in baseball is better all right Sparky Anderson the winning manager of the world champion Cincinnati Reds let's go back upstairs to my college all right the final scores the National League wins at 7 to 1 we'll be back after this message and a word from our local stations Oh Bob prints are the most valuable player of the 47th all-star game thank you very much Warner wolf and Monte Irvin a great Hall of Famer in his own right representing the Commissioner
