Bob Uecker the catcher who never made it Bob and a presentation here tonight for Rod Carew last year as a member of the Minnesota Twins he won his seventh batting championship hitting 333 he homered five times and he knocked in seven tearooms batting chip championship number seven for Rod Carew and here to make the presentation tonight the president of the American League mr. Lee MacPhail thank you Bob it is my privilege to represent all 14 of our teams here tonight and honoring rod we're presenting him with this silver Louisville Slugger emblematic of having won the American League batting championship in 1978 his bob says rod is one seven of these a truly remarkable achievement he is without question the finest player active in baseball today and more than that he's a very fine gentleman and a credit to our game congratulations Robert thank you very much mister MacPhail and I'd like to thank the Louisville Slugger hillerich & Bradstreet to present to have been presented me with this award tonight and I just hope that I can get back within the next week or so and give Roy Smalley and the other guys a run for another batting title 1979 thank you Rattray just back yesterday got the final okay I guess and the doctors here in California to start hitting again how long is gonna be before you're back in the lineup on an everyday basis Bob I think you know if I can get a couple days of hitting you know maybe four or five days of hitting hopefully and I should be back in the lineup next week in Baltimore and I know it's gonna be kind of hard but I'm just gonna do my best you know I can't hit by sitting on a bench I can't get myself iced back in shape by sitting on the bench so I'm just gonna have to play as much as I can and work myself back into some kind of shape all right gentlemen thank you congratulations one more time to Rod Carew our starting pitchers tonight Louie Tiant six and three for New York Nolan Ryan 11 and six for California the Angels the Yankees coming up on a Friday the 13th Major League Baseball presents big-league tips well I think that the most important thing about hitting is find a bad that you could use something that you can swing he's leading off Bobby Murcer hitting is he hankie 220 with four ribbies Thurman Munson a 301 but only three homeless and 35 reveries Greg nettles in a slump 259 13 home is 49 rip ease Reggie Jackson red-hot 290 16 home runs 45 rabies Lou Piniella the steady 1 3 18 8 home runs 45 RBIs Chris Chambliss struggling 264 9 home runs only 29 RBIs the d8 Jim Spence at 262 8 home runs 24 RBIs willie randolph getting on base often 268 3 ohm is 34 RBIs Bucky Dent at 251 home at 21 RBIs Keith the Angels have not taken the field as yet might tell you the Jim Fregosi the manager of the California Angels is not with a ballclub tonight he's hospitalized for sand tests and Bobby cannot who played a lot of second base for this ballclub wins a very popular figure and now a coach with the team will do the managing from the dugout tonight so Bobby Knopf handling the chore for Jim Fregosi the crowd is a little late getting here and good reason for it because the 5 o'clock start it's kind of hard steal more than an hour and the traffic sometimes on the California freeways can get very gummy this time of the day [Applause] that's a very fast I think comment too because as the shadows creep out across the field that baseball coming from Nolan Ryan at better than 90 miles an hour will be coming out of the Sun into the shadow and last Monday he pitched against the Boston Red Sox and the Twilight ball game here he struck out the side the second the fourth innings had a total of 12 in the ball game and shut out the Red Sox by a score of six to nothing and Jim Rice and Bob Watson struck out three times each against Nolan Ryan in the Twilight so he is particularly lethal and the Yankees are quite aware of it Don Drysdale told you a story last Monday night we were talking about in Montreal the Yankees coming in here for this Friday night Twilight game and Jim Spencer heard about the game being played at this hour he was very quick to mention that he was quite sure it would come up Nolan Ryan and that's exactly what has happened on the other side of the coin Lou Piniella has this to say when I asked him if the Yankees had a defeatist attitude coming in here at Twilight against Ryan he said no he's working with three days rest as you look at Luis Tiant the ancient one coming in he's been pitching cannily from the Yankees comes off of one hitter a brilliant effort against Oakland Piniella said I think working with three days rest he will end after a tough game where he threw a lot of pitches it will not be nearly so effective as people think both feel fella who first came to fame as a member of the Oakland ballclub Joe Rudi who's finally sound and playing well once again hitting over 300 since returning from the injury list Rick Miller who has just come off the injury list is hitting an even 500 he's been wearing him out since he came back to play and he's outstanding defensively over in right field Dan Ford who came from the Minnesota Twins in a trade and he has been very effective all year as well moving to the inside at third base you have Carney Lansford this is a young man and I mean very young in his early twenties who came up out of the system and seemingly destined for stardom in the American League at shortstop tonight another young man who has come out of the system matter of fact grew up right here in Southern California young Jim Anderson who's been hitting very well over at second base free agency delivered this outstanding player to the California Angels along with gene Autry's pocketbook Bobby Grich Bobby is playing with a sore hamstring problem and a leg but he's in there battling having a big year over at first base you have Willie Aikens who is also having an outstanding year and they really needed a big effort from Willie with the injury to Rod Carew back of the plate is another young man who has become fear literally with men on base he's become a good hard tough clutch hitter Brian downing at Nolan Ryan with his numbers there on the mound and the stories about this man and his pitching achievements will go on throughout the night worth remembering that he defeated the Boston Red Sox six nothing last Monday night in a Twilight game here we had this mild delay in starting Keith because Nolan was little late coming in from the clubhouse or rather coming out from the clubhouse as Bobby Mercer is the first to go against Noah he is that fair success in the past against Nolan generally the Yankees have had little the first pitch of the ballgame is low and outside for ball one it'll be such a startling contrast between Ryan and Tian tonight it'll be fun to watch that pitch is high 2 balls and no strikes where is Jerry the pitching coach of the angel says that no one has been throwing well he's in his rhythm is compact more consistent with his delivery and his pitches have been in the black part of the play too rather than up and over the plate and Bobby Murcer hits it high in the air in the Sun field over in right-center those Danny Ford looking up into that bright Sun on the right fielder for quite some time now it's gonna be looking at light again the Sun one day catcher well I'm proud to announce that we've been joined by Bob Uecker usually gets lost in the tunnel from the dugout runway I made it I made it welcome back Robert hey I'm using up one of my options tonight Keith Thurman Munson at 301 on the season with three home runs and Ryan has it on the corner for a strike fast thurman about facing Brian in the Twilight he said me against Ryan it doesn't matter five o'clock eight o'clock it's the same thing breaking pitch is high and the Texan stretches his shoulder a little bit he's in an option year and having a good year he goes outside then it goes to two and one on Thurman lives in the Alvin Texas offseason that's about 30 miles southeast of Houston there is amplification what Howard was right how do you see it that's a strike and it's 2 & 2 what's [Applause] Nolan during the offseason doesn't do anything particular except live and work at the farmer that keeps him in pretty good shape to to to Munson fouled away interesting to see that graphic just posted Keith despite all of the talk about Nolan's total effectiveness he's only eight Nate against the Yankees and there's the earned run average three point 71 not consistent with his general overall earned run average so he's had trouble with the world champions although they freely attest to the brilliance of his performance Bunsen punches it down the right-field line it's just foul just foul keep watching Nolan Ryan pitch here on Monday night when he stopped Boston he struck out 12 in the early inning early innings in that game the Red Sox did not touch him did not touch him at all a couple of balls hit here in the first inning by Mercer net ball just missing in right field by Munson but Ryan in that game on Monday through 140 pitches kind of hard to figure how this guy can work with three days rest throwing that many pitches that's the Piniella theory that I've already discussed while you were winding your way through the tunnel with your absence of vision Piniella thinks that Ryan will be a tired pitcher tonight the Yankees will get him contact by Munson on that last drive and the one Mercer hit for both on balls up in the strike zone there was a bullet just missed count goes full three two [Applause] the tip-off on Nolan Ryan is that in his 12 complete games this year he's walked through your less banners he doesn't reload him to first base he can hang in Monson again fouls it away it was a good pitch on the outside corner count holds 3 - Keith you can see our defensive hitters on when you look at months and just trying to punch that ball to right field even ahead in the count two months in earlier it's trying to slap a pitch to right field this game progresses the shadows around the mound area now as they get out a little bit further and the game gets into about the third or fourth inning it gets really tough there you see the shadows with Nolan Ryan on the mound they don't figure Thurman to pull him because the centerfielder Miller shades him to right and instead he walks in [Applause] that will bring up Greg nettles who is struggling if the play the plate here's the pitch that put Munson on first base for close but it was up battles at 2:59 and that's not that far off his to career average but he has not been productive of late no he's been in a deep slump for a long number of weeks isn't quite aware of what he's doing wrong but he's been through it before and he's always come out of it I was watching him in the hitting cage before the game whoa look like the bat wait about 30 pounds tell you when you get 16 hits against Seattle and 14 runs and you go over six you start thinking I think he brought up a very important point to it with nuts are going and the throw through and he's gone [Music] here's a perfect throw by Brian downing Brian with a fastball downing gets out quickly and throws a strike to Anderson covering it second and they get Thurman Munson I was watching the tag by Anderson on his plate didn't look like even touch Munson let's see I didn't think he did well the balls there you're out right but nonetheless and evidence as you looked at a call ball of what Marty's been doing with this club he's led them to a record of 15 and 9 since he took over Munson is a good runner for a catcher and he's been getting base running efforts out of Piniella Munson unexpected sources try and keep the other team off-balance three balls and no strikes to Nettles there's one red one [Applause] one of the things to remember I'm sure about mr. nettles though is he is a streak hitter of all streak hitters there are times when he comes to the ball yard and you cannot get him out over the last three years he's averaged 32 home runs and 97 runs batted in so his time maybe in front of them and if it is true that his streak is coming it'll come probably at a very good time for the Yankees now the count is 4 3 2 yeah I was gonna say about nettles a moment ago to keep to the fact that over the last few weeks nettles has been hitting a lot of balls to the opposite field you brought up a point that he may be a little bit tired and that's the thing that shows it with nettles balls into the opposite field this guy's of death pull hitter 3 2 pitch fouls it back any foul back ball 4 but with Ryan you must protect yourself because his curve snaps hard late most of those base hits in fact virtually all of them against California came in the early part of the year when Craig was off strong I think guys worry about Nolan Ryan they don't worry about over for in a game like this Twilight isn't worried about over 27 and surviving that's fouled away and that was a good pitch this is the ballpark where the Los Angeles Rams will hang their helmets is the 1980 season and they're gonna move the big a next week a couple of hundred tons of it and there's a man right there in the California dugout they're sure gonna be welcome back though as I said Willie Aikens done an outstanding job for but having Aikens and Carew both available to play first gives you an idea of the depth of this California ballclub that they've been able to build into it [Applause] come for the New York Yankees nothing California coming to bat the lineup for the California Angels Rick Bella leaning off at 289 the brilliant young third baseman Connie Lance for the 313 Dan fought next to 85 11 home runs tough Don Bella incredibly with 80 RBIs 21 home runs Willie Aikens at 280 57 rupees Brian downing at 346 what a surprise and then Joe Rudi at 233 but he'll get up there and then Bobby Grich at 302 with 18 home runs finally Jimmy Anderson at 267 his Keith defense for the New York Yankees tonight outside it it's Piniella Mercer and Jackson left to right inside it's nettles net Randolph Chambliss Munson back to the plate and Luis Tiant is on the mound he had a one-hitter against Oakland in his last outing won the ballgame two to nothing he's got every pitch that you ever heard about to read about and three more exactly right key they talked about Nolan Ryan being tough in the Twilight the same holds true for a guy likes to yawn he's got such an unorthodox style of delivery turns his back to the hitter straight over hand side arm throws underhand once in a while [Music] he said luigia throws anything everything plus maybe even the pork fall this year they say here comes Miller Lansford and Ford in that order Miller returning to action on Monday after coming off the disabled list with a broken bone in his left hand he's got a little splint underneath the wrappings for some stability as the wrist is still weak but a fine defensive outfielder and he has been hot at the plate since he came back 9 for 18 Rick Miller came over from Boston what can you play spring to play over there needs a ton of an athlete who's good enough to be playing for somebody he finally found this way TR snaps a little slider on the outside corner for a golf straw I love that pitch it's so reminiscent though not in the fight the Ark of RIP sewells old blooper pitch fastball inside just to bend him a little bit and it's one on one [Music] Darren Johnson coaching at first base or California and there's a name from out of the past Bobby can office at his normal position at third base though he is the acting manager tonight the numbers on Luigi are against California two in one pitch to the leadoff man for the Angels Rick Miller it's a pious tutu three and ones good nettles has moved well off the line at third base at standing close on the grass pillar with good speed we'll put it on the ground for you this is a relatively soft infield now Greg's on the grass Miller strokes it toward Bucky Dent at shortstop and that penalty one down it just had a quick look at a youngster next to Billy Martin in the dugout there are two youngsters that one of them is Roy whites little boy and the kid is a riot he knows every player in the big leagues he's got the bubblegum cards and Billy called him over before the game today and he said will you tell Howard your latest trade and he said I traded Billy Martin I said for whom he said for the Oakland manager Carney Lansford at 313 takes a breaking pitch inside and tight I'm like read white boys boys comment a couple of weeks ago when Bobby Mercer moved from the Cubs over the Yankees changeup is it high in the air to left field playable Vennela calls and makes the catch for the second down they were talking about what number to give them in certain norms of course and the Yankees are not available and he said to read said why don't you give him Yogi's number and her number eight and somebody said well you can't that's yogi Berra's nobody he's not doing it and Ford severely closed stance but he has power he took Paul's split off way up on the bank next to the freeway in Kansas City a few days ago good solid 285 hitter he slices this one found on the right side out of play that close stance on Ford Keith he's more of a right field right-center field hitter with hard stuff anything off-speed if you make a mistake inside off-speed stuff you'll pull you in his yard he came over from the twins LaRon Jackson and Dan Goodwin nobody aboard for california/nevada by the first inning count as one and one on Ford you've got two out though he bounces one I love to watch Louie pitch that one hit it this past Sunday was the third of his career he never has pitched a no-hitter and his last one header came in 1968 when he was with Cleveland and was against the Yankees and the guy who got the head got it in the first inning is the last hit he ever got in the big leagues fella named Mickey Mantle got a lot I'll tell you that before I packed it in Wallace hit foul on the right side out of play you've got a pretty funny act out here now I would mention the fact that Tiant turns his back on the batter just before he makes his deliver to the plate well you look at Ford standing in the batter's box and for a split second what you have is a hitter with his back to the pitcher pitcher with his back to the hitter if you hook him from centerfield and you can see that it's four things his fence just how severely closed he is literally with his back the pitcher by the time Lewis swings around now is back to back and that's low Louie turn around say this guy kitty what are you doing 3 2 pitch is fouled away lordy swung late on that I thought the pitcher was pastor got thurman munson in the game very quickly because you did walked him upside the head crowd still filing in big crowd tomorrow night's game is also a wall-to-wall sellout three two and four takes outside all right coming up now one of the hottest dinners in baseball Donna Bella 80 RBIs 21 home runs I talked to him about his efforts thus far we've just about gone crazy at the plate this year how come well the first part of the year ahead Rod Carew hitting in front of me and they pitched around rod a lot the first two months of the season I had 50 RBIs the first two months and he deserted me in June and I had 11 and so in July I've really picked up I had a bad hand the first part of you know June and I just didn't hit the ball well but right now I'm back on track and I'm swinging Evette great right now pregame comments Don Baylor historically his most productive months are August and September after this kind of a start goodness knows what he's liable to do at one point he had a couple of two home run games at 9 home runs and 9 games there are the figures month by month he told you about June and July ward off first see on holding him close family and I were down to see the Angels play Oakland July 4 and he hit a shot almost in the scoreboard sad wheels and it's good for a strike and it's 1 in 1 to tell ya the Dodgers with their terrible troubles got the Mets into winning ways which is no small task the Mets won the first of two seven two six over the Giants today [Applause] the 1 1 pitch to Baylor standing deep in the box to look at T on as long as he can before he cuts loose on the pitch and he fouls it back and it's 1 & 2 California has he scored more runs than anybody else in the American League they have been hammering the ball Ford has stolen five then caught three times this year is your basement and the 1 2 pitch to Baylor outside even at to talk about this California law club keep the amount of runs they've been scoring and endless it's been unbelievable the hitting is the thing that's really carried him in years past it's been pitching but they are hurting for pitching no left-handed starters bananas gone they have one left hander in the bullpen LaRoche and he has been hit hard so it's been all hitting for California 2 2 4 3 2 it's placed a very great burden on Nolan Ryan something I talked him about before today's game the same time they've had brilliant relieving from young Montclair he brought in the guy that's really believed the stopper in the bullpen last year was LaRoche this year he's been hit hard there are showing some signs while be up coming back a little bit last couple of outings he's then quite good here go sport on 3 and 2 and later walks the first two [Applause] starring bill number 22 Willie Aikens 280 hitter with 57 runs batted in before the year he was on the roster in pencil only as pinch hitter and perhaps some BH at a good spring and he came on to replace Dan board who was hurt early hit five home runs and eight games in now with Carew heard he's been playing first base and the D H Willie Mays Aikens anything like the original is more than except two out two on no score bottom of the first inning Louie Tiant pitches and gets a strike on Aikens they'd Cindy come up to the big club didn't even last a wild any good he's young a couple of years ago and go back Salt Lake and he'd wear him buddy out over there and then he come back up and then he coupe back but he's arrived now the amazing thing about Aikens Keith the fact that he's only played in 67 games that pitch is low his managers in the minor leagues were the two people who are coaching at the corners for California Bobby cannot a and double-a and Deron Johnson and triple-a I'm sure that helps a young man though it throws a balloon up there that floats in higher to make it two and one well he's thrown 11 different pitches already having a little trouble getting them in the strike zone plate umpire is Jim evidence get on the ground sharply chris chambliss gets a good bounce out of it makes the play at first himself from the inning is over so the Angels get a couple of board but can't move them along and after one inning of play we have no score back before baseball after this worst of our local stations son Reggie Jackson Lou Piniella and Chris Chambliss Reggie now at 298 16 home run he is struck out 21 times in 58 lifetime appearances against Nolan Ryan its power against power things don't look much better today nolan through 19 pitches in the first inning we'll keep the study running tab on that remembering that he threw 140 pitches this past monday he's working with three days rest he's lowing away on his first pitch to Reggie football one I don't take seriously number times a pitcher is struck out Jackson that doesn't diminish Jackson's red ball back here the thing I like about this confrontation are between these two guys Jackson's a super fastball hitter what's going Ryan strictly a power type pitcher with a fastball I like to see him challenge a guy like Jackson but the thing that I think that was so big for Nolan Ryan on Monday night the fact that he had such an outstanding curveball against the Red Sox along with the great fastball he works the Jackson one in one direct routes I'd and I ball two he does not have the breaking pitch they'll just sit in there guys like Reggie will sit in there and wait for that lay on that fastball and he doesn't have that breaking pitch he's not gonna win two all the cards white Chambliss hits Ryan's going to Templin someone Yankees got a career average of over 300 against Ryan and he says very simply I just looked threw the fastball and that's it hit him a long time to get his curve in hand five years to development all right to the left side yo Rudy coming over near the line has a playa next again coming up now Luke Piniella who escaped relatively unscathed from wicked Seattle thing though but not without a near altercation awesome lo want to tell me about the San Diego chicken well we were playing in Seattle and you know as everybody knows we don't play very well there or we haven't played very well there and the chicken was having a little more fun with us than I thought he was entitled to I feel that the chicken is good for baseball I'm stay outside of the white lines I'm staying top of the dugout or in the stands but don't plan around too much as the players especially after they were getting beat like we were just to do my glove Adam I had some words with him he started clowning around with me I thought I was gonna make him a Purdue broiler our breaking pitch is in for strike two now to Piniella hello couple breaking pitches that he is thrown and I keep that a beauty dropped off the table [Applause] it was a Purdue broiler off the table Chris Chambliss now let's see those don't mean what some of you might think now the Klan is not in town those are Kay's that are hung up they're shameless grounds at the shortstop Anderson who has to hurry with it after failing to get the handle but those k's are hung up by a group of fans over there to indicate the number of strikeouts ryan recorded nothing for the Yankees top of the second after one and a half innings no score [Music] [Applause] Brian downing Joe Rudi Bobby Grich downing a lifetime 246 hitter as you see the lion score in the game now he's second in the American League only Roy Smalley of Minnesota has a higher average [Music] 3:46 Bryan's an interesting case rejected almost from the beginning then grouping himself with the White Sox as a good fastball hitter with the Angels he's learned how to handle the curveball of the net Brazil as the average just recited by Keith Jackson and a very unusual stance at the plate watch him from centerfield now he sees wide open as the pitch comes to the plate he steps toward it with a little hitch in it and it's inside from Louie for ball one as the American League batting leaders and you can see the presence mr. Downey over-the-top snaps in and it's one-on-one Doug Keith you talked about that wide open stance by downing said it's very important for him there you see him wide open very important for him to bring that front fluid toward the plate there's only one guy that I've ever seen that hit out of an open stance like that and the stride going the same way that was Clemente he was a very very long bat and never went into the pitch yet out of a wide open stance but down and goes right in [Applause] here comes Joe Rudi and sports out of the natural way under y'all sing it sleep pat-down in recent days leading the Padres five to four Game one the eighth inning Atlanta Pittsburgh eight to two in the fourth a grand slam of a Jeff Burroughs we told you about the Mets victory over the Giants dodges and pulleys died in the second st. Louis Houston later stalk keep you abreast of all of them that was the eighth career Grand Slam for Jeff Burroughs incidentally those numbers on Joe Rudi a little deceiving he's been hitting much better than that lately still the same fellow he's always been polite quiet gentlemen lives on 200 acres of land near Baker Oregon hosted land posted land that's right lays it down pow [Applause] Clemente a the only one you ever saw would that open the stands no not with that open to stands but didn't go into the ball like doubting does for Berto when he described with his front foot her and I thought it went to our third base but he had that long Betty what about Fanny Fothergill with the Tigers in 27 well he hit from the left side no he did Barbican up asking Joe Rudi to move the base winner along he fouled off the first pitch on the attempted bump the outfield is playing in deep they respect his power Brian downing with quickness for a catcher at first base runs well Rudy's swinging away fouls it back and it's two strikes want to quickly tell you folks that nice thing that buzzie Bavasi who runs the front office of the Angels did lifted the blackout so that the local folks could see this game tonight it's on behalf of them and on behalf of us buzzer ooh thank you very much attendance up more than 370 mm for the angels this year that's the best of baseball the two strike pitch coming now to Rudy Swain's and stretch out up comes one of the remarkable stories of major league baseball wish here Bobby Grich hitting in 302 with 18 home runs 55 RBIs previous home run highs in the season had been seven and six back in the old days with Baltimore it's all come back a magnificent story year ago figured his career might be over due to a back problem great ballplayer that high over his head as Tiant throws quickly the first down he has to go back in his on his tummy Bobby pulled a hamstring the right leg 12 days ago Kansas City and really know how she's gotten worse and work missed a couple of games against the Red Sox when they were out here one more try over at first base except T on that time almost threw it away [Applause] [Applause] the pitch is high in a way to Bobby Grich [Music] donning is 2 for 4 on the base pass you can see the Angels have not done a whole lot of running in their last few games have answered better rattle in the fences or the parking lot [Applause] reflex action look at what if my crepes and Gretel's appeared to have metal its appeared to have lost that ball for a moment the crowd behind home plate there that happens every once in a while those balls and hit back to the box or hit Sharpie on the infield you'll lose them momentarily in the crowd and medals appeared to have lost it for a second and then grab it one of the great things about nettles as a ball player as he compartmentalizes is thinking when in a batting slump he doesn't go into a fielding tailspin he is that he's always the greatest Jimmy Anderson the shortstop takes a fastball on the outside corner for strike one he's only 22 and very likely the shortstop of the future for California and struggled a little bit with a sore shoulder he's a scrappy little battler strike went far enough look at this play by Graig again and then think of what Bob Uecker said the possible loss of vision due to the crowd behind the plate the ball actually knocked him down to strike pitch to Anderson though the angels get a leadoff single from Brian Downey but they can't do anything about it and we played two innings of play at Anaheim we have no school we'll go now to the top of the third inning for the New York Yankees Jim Spencer Willie Randolph and Bucky Dent Spencer an X angel he's the designated hitter he has eight home runs he's dangerous in batting practice he knocked four five of them in seats or out there in that hole they're digging for the enlargement of Anaheim Stadium I'll tell you a story about some of the holes around Anaheim Stadium for the nights over involving Lee walls Spencer hits it big chopper out to Bobby Grich he throws it out and you've got one away Brian now has thrown 29 pitches in the ballgame 32nd Willie coming down when you look at the fact that he threw 19 in the first inning exactly the pace he would want to throw it I asked me other night Howard about the hundred and forty pitches if that was rather high for it and he said it was and I think Keith talked earlier about the fact that Ryan has cut down on the walks anytime you got the kind of velocity and the strikeout potential at Ryan does you're gonna throw a lot of pitches he had problems earlier in the season Larry sherry the California pitching coach talked him into spending more time in the bullpen before he was starting assignment get yourself a little more relaxed Larry sherry would know about that pitching here oh I'm the bullpen of the 59 World Series won the Babe Ruth of waters the MVP hid know about that is the kid who's been getting on base so effectively for the angels [Music] - now going to three and one against Randolph Willie had a four four four nine final game up in Seattle here's a pitch that Ryan wanted and not that bad a pitch around the knees the outside corner walk Randolph that's the second walk of the game [Music] [Applause] Bucky Dent - walking up coming up forth of your mind late at six o'clock Oakland A's were nearly walls first base coach for Oakland and they've got the big holes dug up out there where they're expanding and moving the scoreboard and all that kind of stuff normally you come out of the clubhouse exit and you turn left to get on the bus walls comes out makes the usual turn left from pitfalls in a six foot hole they have turned the lights down for the fireworks leaves rolling around down and all that dust and everything lost his glasses tore his britches and about that time the firework started and you know where he thought he had gone missed the bus and they throw the ball away at first base and rendao counters down to second so it'll be an error on the pitcher Ryan [Music] you'll see that last play one more time Ryan turning and throwing torch for his face and the ball behind the rudder and there you see Randolph heading for a second I don't know if Aikens ever saw that throw coming from Ryan it's your kid either right now an opportunity for dent Yankees have no hit so far in the game here in the top of the third inning they have speed at second base that looks at speed heat for strike Yankees are going crazy with their inconsistency of run production two games they had two runs against Seattle total of five hits then 16 it's 14 runs that's foul and struck too [Applause] please watch the call it's very close he's safe it's a four-four tie and the Sox don't like it at all each team scored getting back its to tell me John had a bad outing against Seattle but injuries was to strike pitch [Applause] I'll tell you that's gonna be a hundred mile an hour pitch right here this right here fastball around the outside part of the plate look at this right on the outside part our head right over the outside corner tail the fastball it came back in two down Randolph at second here's Bobby Mercer Bobby out on a fly ball to the left fielder Rudi first time up to the right again so that's nine or 7b Danny Ford thought it over and right for you pitch is just outside you know when you watch a guy like Nolan Ryan the overpowering fastball now when you're you're standing up there hitting against when he starts spot pitching hitting the outside part the inside part it's really unbelievably tough bad enough you got to face the Express and the great curveball he's standing in the sunshine all around him is shadow boom here comes an air dystrophic what's really big game I ever saw Ryan perform it was the year of the miracle Mets 69 playoff game Shea Stadium against Atlanta and he came on in relief saved that game totally dominated it and you could see the nolan ryan of the future and oddly traded by the mets for the angels present manager Jim Fregosi just adds that close just outside Ryan grumbling about it what a team you could build out of the men defensive traded away here's that last pitch again these are the pitches that Ryan really wants he says everybody knows I can throw hard I can throw balls across the plate if I want but these are the kind of pitches that I want the corner pitches missing the Mercer I think there's some preconditioning on the part of the arbiters expecting him to be a little fatter on the plate with it it doesn't have the reputation of being a Niblick 3 & 1 now they all talked about working the plate tonight to keep cool me yes where's my black ass [Music] Jim Evans back at the plate tonight bread spent at first rich Garcia second Larry Barnett at third those the umpires outfield play at Mercer straightaway three in one pitch now with two out and Randolph at second by the shrinks foot and it's fallen three two say this Merced took a good cut a good cut just overpowered by that incidentally in that playoff game I mentioned Nolan Ryan got the win never forgotten first reported to st. Peters 3 2 pitch Mercer fouls it back Bobby hanging in [Music] another Oklahoman standing there with a piece of lumber in his hand Bobby not having an easy time of it at the plate he's dead three - coming [Music] [Applause] kids got a base learners for a second but they leave no score from California line scored the game so far nothing but goose eggs up there for the Yankees here we go to the top of the order for California bottom of the third inning its Rick Miller Carney Lansford Dan board Till's gets better huh he not just has to hold together and give nothing away because Ryan has really blow on that ball it's the kind of game the way it started anyway you got a win one to nothing a two to one whomever [Music] that's out into right center carrying pretty well Mercer on the moon black sit down [Applause] with some authority among the Yankee struggles the problems for the center field has rivers on the disabled list injury vanitas on the disabled list injury they are authentic center fielders Mercer and perfect truth is not yankees have suffered three times with poppies and ability to go back on the ball over the head not a rapid Bobby but that's a statement of what his problems are in center field Carney Lansford fouls it away answer it with a flyball to left field his first time up tonight if bill reg need does nothing else for the rest of his life from the angel he's entitled to be paid for finding Connie Lansford he's his boy lock stock and barrel and what a young player whatta he's turned himself into an outstanding third baseman Howard he's got good range he's quick at third good throwing arm he's gonna hit with a little more power - as he grows a little bit look at that leading the league in runs scored at Palm Springs where the Angels trained last year had long talk with Rick and he said where do you see this kid at 30 he was talking to us about Lansford and he's proved out no he comes over the top to make it 2-2 they're three brothers one of them just sign was drafted inside Lansford was one of the guys at the Minnesota Twins wanted the deal for Rod Carew and they said that or get it [Applause] - - brakes in low the other brothers are fill it was playing a ball in the Toronto system right now and Jody who is playing for the San Diego Padres and their two others who are still growing [Applause] Factory the old master a little bit of this a little bit of that another strikeout that's true Keith and that's the beauty of that man is you look at him and look at this pitcher and for when you've been around as long as he has gotten out as many batters he has faced the best of them you're absolutely fearless he just does his thing if he gets hit he gets hit if he doesn't he doesn't but he is the profession are you talking about Nolan Ryan the overpowering stuff he struck out four tonight that was number 340 odds right and the way he reminds me of an old golf Julie borrows I never saw him throw unnoticed yeah he could throw believe me unnoticeably one two US Opens because he was the profession that's the weighty honest one add one more crack or key you'll understand why he's not to appear on The Cosby Show African future nod when Dan Ford walked up there looked like he was trying to negotiate design for the plate which ambev it again over Howard you saw this guy with Cleveland when he could really throw TIA talk about overpowering stuff basketball curb and he threw from every way like he does now only had a lot better fastball big strikeout pitcher them I've seen most including you now you were a survivor now man have a lasted longer with less talent - in one fit the right side California Angels to the plate [Applause] [Music] [Applause] let's see what the Yankees do defensively for Baylor everybody's going to the left side Baltimore used three men on the left side of the infield Willie Wilson when Kansas City was here played him about 15 feet off the left-field line you can see the Yankees have moved over noticeably as metal ghost nettles wood tight to the line down to third they have some good clean fun in this ballpark not like the mess in Chicago last night and perhaps heard the organist in the background as done Bella came up to the plate singing the old Bing Crosby head of so many years ago don't fence me in they haven't been able offense Don Baylor and Billy meant looking at the moment somebody let him out Billy was paraphrasing John Keats at Seattle when he said my heart aches and the drowsy numbness pains my sense [Music] [Applause] bored edges off first Tiant gotta be careful with a big guy outside one in one [Music] eighty RBIs eight old he's only just begun another half season ago [Applause] 1 1 pitch it sharply [Applause] and he makes it Pinella [Music] the little guy another Champlain you'll see medals just bragging a deflected scarce thanks wife's Ford was April and taking third base nettles can't get and so Willie Mays Aikens comes to the light out of Seneca South Carolina which is five miles or so from Clemson University [Music] Danny Boy [Applause] [Music] [Applause] runners on the corner two out aegon spousal down the right side that's for 2/3 mailer at first ancients of free hits Yankees are hitless Lions fan 414 on his fan 3 [Applause] bottom of the third inning the first real threat in the ball game by either team and the change is 5 [Music] Louie has changed his training habits a little this year he runs twice as much on his off days he says kept his way to 201 and improve the quality of the cigars [Applause] [Music] got a little breaking ball from t at that time and he ripped it the right view T on with this overhand curveball now doubt around the knees and watch Aikens are studies right out [Music] [Applause] [Music] so the Angels now with four hits in the game took a one nothing lead but of the third inning here's Brian downing who had the first hit of the ball game back in the second inning of D on two out to our one inch Baelor still has good speed at second base the infrastructure remember what we said up against a Nolan Ryan you've got to hang in there you've got to make it a one-run ballgame if you're gonna beat him [Applause] [Applause] that job Mason by Brian downing [Applause] in Anaheim California [Music] left centerfield a diving try here by Bucky Dent he can't reach it and the Angels laid to nothing runners at first and third and you see Thurman Munson talking things over with Louie Tiant as the Davis kid who's become a kind of good luck job for the Yankees for the record of eight no side wailing kid keeps the ball low throws a lot of ground balls been critical to the Yankees still sustaining pennant hopes now Cleveland of a two-run lead [Applause] I believe in California you've been at red-eyes [Applause] [Applause] good luck wanna buy my heart I've hit staff of California guru lien this is a guy that doesn't kill all that many rallies either Billy Martin art Fowler in a Yankee dugout 64 pitches so far 40 on [Applause] runners on the corner and a Rudi looks at the outside corner for a fall striking backs out in this belief Jill won't save myself one more time that last fastball of idea off the outside corner it sure was but a strike [Applause] no Ryan's not getting that call nobody miner me [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] big house here [Applause] hanging breaking ball from Tiant Bruni got it all but foul [Applause] 1 & 2 p.m. with Willie Aikens in third base Brian downing at first base and who runs are in for a two nothing lead they go to the bottom of the third inning leading Texas by one game the American League West the Texas playing in Kansas City tonight Royals really been struggling they came in here and swept California and looked like world beaters but since that time they've just been waffling that is just outside [Music] the infield is now almost total to covered the shuttle [Applause] Rudy strikes out and the inning is over but it's three completed engine fire the Angels leave the Yeti is tuning up tomorrow oh look at that they don't even know you cos hidden me yeah but America they're not here either [Laughter] [Applause] it'll be Thurman Munson Greg nettles and Reggie Jackson for the Yankees as we moved at the top of the fourth inning Nolan Ryan now to run the good the Yankees still nothing but zero [Applause] Munson walked his first time one of two walks issued by Ryan and then thrown out downing to Anderson curveball on the corner and it's a call strike Thurman being solicitous and his questioning of the called mr. Evans sir that's right you call another one like that I want to spit on your shoes when we go back to the top bottom half of this inning that's fouled away see another good fastball that time from Ryan and months and trying to hit that ball to right field the pitch was from the middle part in tough enough to pull that ball once and tried to hit it toward right truth is Thurman's been hitting too much too right lately he knows about it hopefully we'll hear from him later in the game because I interviewed him used to have rat 16 home runs a year there's Ryan Guidry the strikeout leaders he's only got three home runs thus far this year and it was lucky to survive that heat that pretty good pitch to yep good breaking ball sharp breaking curveball by Nolan Ryan on the outside corner these are the kind of pitches at Ryan wants not a bad pitch either not at all [Applause] in the bullet rike out number five coming up Greg nettles the man who is very honest when he talked with me today about the return of Billy Martha's Yankee lineage what's been your personal reaction to Martin's return and has he made a difference I think it was a good move for the team because you know last year when they got rid of him it was we needed a to calm us down and at the time when he took over this year we needed somebody to fire us up and you know and Billy's the kind of guy to do it and he I think the time he took off almost a year now I think it it settled him down a little bit and he's he's able that he's handled himself a lot a lot better than he than he was toward the end last year pregame comments of Greg nettles whose contract expires at the end of this season and he rolls the ball on the ground about the grits boxes it around throws him out he got you down Gregg did say that negotiations are in what you can hold a serious stage here's Reggie [Applause] Reggie gets the booze of the crowd wherever he goes he's reached the point where he's almost receptive to it it just fires him up grown accustomed to their pace it is not totally beyond the pale of possibility hang his hat in this ballpark [Applause] this is one of the clubs that would jump on the chance I'm sure to get a hold of it if in fact he follows through on his pronouncement of some time back that he'd like to go somewhere else [Music] becomes a question of manpower I would think though whoever gets it will have to give up something I would think a lot well that's what I need the quality and I don't know that qualitative now for the trait [Applause] looking at California the way they are they look to me like they've got a lot of quality [Applause] they also have a very good man in right there that's right [Applause] and the horse is doing the dhm forum this year to see who can say that again pitching pitching pitching everybody talks about needing the picture of two or three Reggie and it's 2 & 2 you know you get a club like California Keith I'm sure would really upset the fans here depending on how California finishes of course this year they've got a good solid ballclub we talked earlier they may need a little pitching you don't have a left-hander Tanana is out now and there's some doubt as to when he will pitch again as you look at the California defense the huge crowd here tonight jammed up the break up a block left to bring a guy like Jackson Tom I think would really upset the people here in college that pitch is high and it's a full count 3 & 2 there was a big brouhaha when Bobby bond was traded away lot of griping and moaning about it but turned out in the bonds deal that they can lazy produce five regulars on the field have heard much about it lately Reggie's house that night Bobby's holding press conferences in Cleveland he wants to leave that hey he said it's time to go that's right they've enjoyed him for two years whenever out yes pin around San Francisco here Texas believer and he's still a great ballplayer three toothpicks - Reggie has hit a mile high to me in fear now it's up to Ryan to call it he called the lens first third baseman and the three and a half inning here at Anaheim the Angels to the Yankees nothing as you can see folks I'm with American League President Lee MacPhail who has decreed that the White Sox forfeited yesterday's second scheduled game against Detroit in the twin Ville where Amaya a riot bought the occasion you want to state exactly what prompted that action well Howard first I don't like to take action like this I think games should be one on the playing field not by executive decree but we had a situation there where I would like to say that people have more fun in White Sox Stadium than any place in baseball but this was a promotion that went beyond the contemplation of anybody and got out of hand and the umpires felt that the playing field had been torn up so it was not playable and the crowd was not under control and therefore we couldn't continue the game okay so you took the action it speaks for itself we return to the play-by-play with Keith Jackson thank you for coming by late see you back in the Big Apple Bobby Grich the second baseman for California in the bottom of the fourth inning Jimmy Anderson the shortstop Rick Miller the centerfielder the count on Grich now is two balls and two strikes been a long time since you've had a forfeit major league yes indeed but he did what he had to do it was a bad thing for the city of Chicago for the society in general and you can't let that kind of thing get out of hand so why the penalties necessary bad days for Montreal as they continue to slide San Diego rallied to beat them seven to five Winfield his 21st don't run Bobby Grich swings and misses on a high fastball it was almost a high and there's one out [Applause] it's Lee MacPhail was here as we continue on Monday night baseball this Friday night edition being exact an example of trying to continue to cover all of the diverse stories of baseball in a new sense as and when they happen five strikeouts now for Tiant here's Jim Anderson who struck out swinging first time up this time Jimmy goes after the first pitch and fouls it back in the ground there's a catch up there in the open [Applause] we're in a Yankee hat swing and a Miss it is strike two well T Anse matching Ryan in the striker department he's trailing to nothing both have struck out five pretty close to six there they appeal at first base red spin says no and it's one and two [Applause] - into close to teeth not so much the become and when the pictures come out with a black pencil in a minute reapply on the plate bow back [Music] glad the ball back are you kidding well maybe that's it well really done a job how are you sure have hi to the right side coming back coming back and Chambliss stays with it Chris near of his fans makes the catch chris is a little wary of those bob fouls see that one in Seattle that hit a speaker and then profits on the next turn it better or rather the next swing hit a home run now the top of the order for Rick Miller Oh for two earlier this year oh he was hurt Rick hit some line shots off nice including one that almost undressed it right back through the box good play it got a chance to play here he's much like the Martin kid with the Cubs quickly the scores Minnesota five Toronto for the six Cleveland over Milwaukee two to one in the second Detroit Chicago nothing nothing the second more coming high but do nothing the Angels here at the bottom of the fourth Royals and the Rangers died two two in the third Boston Oakland Baltimore Seattle later starts as game one final which we have given you San Diego vu Montreal Atlanta 13 to 2 over Pittsburgh Cincinnati 1 to nothing in the forest and rain 300 as our saying Bobby got his chance to play here it is one means I'm just like bought did when he went to the Cubs Philadelphia got a high fastball Cynthia area see Jackson giving chase near the wall involve bounces on you all throw coming on for Reggie Jackson was Randolph the throw sliding Miller in the third with a triple inch base at number six Bob luigia Miller almost had went out of here back in the third last time up flied deep to Mercer and Sutter and another tough cookie down the line strength Keith in this batting order one of the things I think that sort of marks this team is their they're not cocky but they're confident this did this sort of looked like a bunch of ball players that have been melded into a team who feel like they can win as Lansford hits a high in the air to left-center field Mercer has a bead on it and Flags it down for the third out so they leave Millar at third base and if they're boarding to play California to Paul Bjork nothing please report to duty it is tuned up in California the Yankees will come up with Piniella Chambliss and Spencer we go to the top of the fifth inning in folks in the Milwaukee area here's a voice you've heard before Bob Uecker okay Keith Piniella Chambliss and Spencer here in the Yankee fifth inning Nolan Ryan struck out five walked to fair [Applause] but Ella's first time up he struck out takes a strike old one the Yankees have nothing off Ryan in the top of the fifth California two runs six hits off to young Ryan lost his no-hitter against Washington back in the first inning its last time out on Monday they reached him for an infield single early two strikes to Piniella Piniella started tonight's game at 318 8ohm runs with 45 RBIs [Applause] murder on the Ryan Express he's got it tonight in the air right field out a play by Piniella and it's still nothing into Ryan is not throwing that many breaking balls tonight but the ones that he has thrown have been sharp raking tough to see [Applause] on the outside corner boost one ball in two strikes let's beat the Giants as we told you seven to six in Game one though the Giants at 17 hits the fields on the way now apparently blanket ball leading the Dodgers one of nothing in the six st. Louis over Houston one to nothing two balls two strikes on pinellas Ryan missed with the curveball yogi berra Lawrence Peter at first base ball two strike two on Piniella Ryan's fastball drilled the right field slicing foul gonna remember Bob Ryan has twice gone seven in the third innings this year without allowing a head on April 21st he did it against Oakland that was broken up by Mitch Bates June 18th against Texas that was broken up by Oscar gamble well he'd love to throw that fifth no-hitter that's the one thing that he really talks about he would love to do it one more time for the fifth well you've called the game recently when the Yankees were in dire straits when Sorensen there the strikeouts listed when Larry Sorensen of the Broads to Edith hidden two balls two strikes fouled back again by piniella s Sorensen at the Yankees no hit for seven innings plus before Chambliss reached in pervasive and then Bucky Dent those for the two hits bears Pinellas career against Ryan six 437 nine strikeouts hitting at 162 but alle leads off the Yankee 5th inning there's Chris Chambliss he's next the 2 2 pitch low and outside he missed ball count down today didn't miss by much this is the sixth time in the game that Ryan has run the count three balls he's three and two on Piniella and the payoff pitch and he missed that's the third walk given up by Ryan okay up comes Chris Chambliss whom you just saw on deck he is the one member of the Yankees for the lifetime batting average of Bettman 300 against Nolan Rosen naturally looking fastball but as he noted to me in an earlier talk he also has had good success against the curve but Ryan gets in trouble at times Howard it is with the breaking ball it's in a while he has a tendency to hang breaking balls he's into the fastball strike on Chambliss how did he blow that one in can hear him popping way up here one strike the Chambliss his first time out thrown out by the shortstop Jim Anderson on outside one ball and one strike [Applause] you know people white wonder Howard what a catcher's hand would look like after the night with Nolan Ryan but his ball is really not that tough to handle he throws kind of a light basketball they call it doesn't have a heavy type ball to handle hope did you catch like that while dinner had a planet Earth Toni Onley baboom sinker [Music] [Applause] double glazed executes watch the reflexes of a cat so put on that yeah you saw I ate plenty of time to get champions ball was hit like a bullet by Chambliss nice play by Incans 363 dear Spencer Spencer's first time on tap to second breaking ball and Ryan missed slider from Nolan Ryan one ball no strikes on Spencer see Ryan drive off that mound with that back leg there's a good breaking ball bounce even ball one strike one beautiful fit he really drives look at his back leg when he starts bringing the pitch toward the plate can he push off breaking ball and he missed I've been upstairs [Applause] two balls and a strike on Spencer Piniella let it off with the walk and the DoublePlay ball by Chambliss in the air and playable Carney Lansford the third baseman retired before happening - nothing California leads the Yankees leads it off here in the California fifth inning hit a second scored his last time out of the third the Angels hit the Yankees with two in the third all after two were out four base hits Ford Baylor with singles run-scoring single by akin to a run-scoring single by Brian Downey kion's fastball misra filed for a strike chiana's walked two struck out five tonight he walked a pair back in the first thing with California couldn't score numero uno [Applause] curveball in the air right side changed by Chambliss he's got room dear Lord she's got it one down [Applause] it'll break up Don Baylor he's been on twice walk in the first Baelor having a big ear Yanni finished 14th in the all-star voting among outfielders i nervous that the commissioner approves the system of banpo he feels that their selections were relatively on even keel i think that that kind of statistic would take issue with the Commission I don't know why the jollity and the Yankee club head dugout ducking from the foul ball but I see no reason for jollity trailing miss Tommy John Tommy John has racing pachala 13 victories hold on the baler curveball missed outside from TIA I tell you Boehner has always been one of my favorite players in things I'm really inclined wanted he's a hard play hard he's a tough guy seen this guy drilled many time by pitches he never says anything never says a word always goes before a baseball [Applause] he gets on the bass bass second baseman shortstops on a double play lookout catcher's he's a hard tough player he doesn't like being a designated he didn't know you know to play every day he once requested that he be traded today he told me it with draws the fryi position he likes being with the Angels and that present mafia affair which he is substantially responsive Gene Autry cowboy out here with California love to win it for him that's an interesting graphic the white tee on this come on in the warm weather 3-1 to Baylor good fastball idea reach back for a little extra full count down well I think very frankly the prime reason Don Baylor doesn't play the outfield has inflated he doesn't have that's good defensive arm they taking liberties with Don Baylor played him at first base free to pitch in the air and out of play by better still full count runners runners really did take advantage of Don Baylor but it's hard said he's he's unhappy for the D H role with California he'd like to play every day the big year though he's got to be happy three balls two strikes what I were in the California fifth inning and they lead to nothing Beeler right next door I got Howie now talking about people who are unhappy with the D H role it's another Reggie Jackson spend to have a lot of pride a lot of guys say Howard they just don't get involved in the game if they can't play defensively it really Keys them up as far as going to the plate and hitting the next time don't get much of a chance to redeem yourself check swing foul it's one thing about being a d8 you know if you have you messed up at the plate he hit at the double play he still got a chance to go in the outfield didn't feel played defensively and come up with the play once in a while it kind of redeems it not only that there's a kind of humiliation to be messed up at the plate he hit at the double play he still got a chance to go in the outfield didn't feel played defensively and come up with a play once in a while and kind of redeemed it not only that there's a kind of humiliation to being publicly classified as an incomplete ball free to the baler outside he missed him [Applause] the second time that he has walked and Baelor here it is again I'd says loves golf it'll bring up Willie Aikens single driving in the Angels first run back in the third [Applause] he's one for two today Eakins has had a big year for the ages he's really trimmed himself down he said 216 pounds now back in 75 he weighed 235 in high school more than 250 a ball no strikes Eakins tonight appearing at his 16 game for California look at the stance on this guy hitting at 282 day 14 home runs and 58 runs batted in in 68 games CRO late I'm Don Baylor let me tell you this kid was a football player South Carolina State played the same team is Donnie shell the great safety of the Steelers who hits like a linebacker Boehner jumps to Ali at first [Applause] lucky Randolph [Applause] [Music] style saw at the end of five innings and you take one more look at this couple ball hit by Incans right back to the boxing in the hazmat sharply there's death Randolph and the relay at the end of five and still California leading to nothing we'll be back with more baseball after this word from our local station we believe he'll that tells you how they feel here at Anaheim the angels on top of the West Nolan Ryan against Willie Randolph good fastball for a strike and it's all love Ryan through five innings that's thrown 73 pitches Tiant threw 595 breaking ball picked up by Dali ball one strike one here's that breaking ball by Nolan Ryan and the check swing by Randolph one ball and one strike Lansford up close and third for Randolph there's a strike on the outside corner boy Ryan does in these spots tonight getting better and better the Yankees have nothing through five innings [Applause] all one strike two on Rendell [Applause] there's the curveball missed outside you the Royals are getting belted again Texas Open the Royals six to two in the fourth inning Pat Putnam that kids coming on got his tenth home run for the Rangers the guy that got a job the Rangers figured he could do the job at first face and they got rid of Mike Hargrove said he had them to find out at number 10 tonight inside the Randolph Texas has pitching to yes sir how about that big guy that Jagger and you bring him in Fergie Jenkins Sparky Lyle there's Billy Martin trailing - not the fishing accident accounts with a little adhesive on the bridge in the nose trying to bait a hook and a shrimp got away from me jelly was lucky was telling me could a lost in high two kids in the dugout Roy white kid Drake nettles get cute little seed three balls two strikes on Randolph here's Ryan's payoff Fitz and he walked him the Yankees wrong Machamp listen hit into a 6-3 6-3 double play here's Bucky Dent well it's Nolan's fourth walk still a tight ballgame tuna nothing den was called out on strikes his first time up in the third he was strikeout number three for Ryan don't want to over build any tension but pinky's at bat in the sixth inning and still hitless miss slowing outside one ball no strikes now let's see if the Yankees send Randolph here to try and get something going jumps to his lead against Ryan at best baserunner of course especially with members out and he draws and throw his back in time although Mickey hasn't been stealing bases as of yore too many injuries Randolph has stolen a team [Applause] meet the ball and I'm the runner Willie Randolph the runner at first the Angels scored twice in the third that's been it the Yankees have had nothing Bob Ryan first and Randolph again back in time just Valley he almost Adam going the wrong way Willie put the tag on with a little authority to notice this but on consecutive singles in the third inning boy Bella Aikens and down in the air short right-field Ford near the line PG play I knew BEC Bucky was trying to go to write but he couldn't do it with any authority and he couldn't advance the runner one of those nun recorded statistics that is so critical in baseball here's Bobby Mercer Mercer flied to right field in the first struck out swinging in the third he was number four for Ryan there's Louie Tia in the Yankee dugout Tiana's pitched well but he's trailing to nothing he is matched Ryan in the strikeout Department with five apiece you saw that earlier graphic the first eight times out higher and run average the next eight times out for Tiant in the twos [Applause] bursar a good rip filed out of play so what Louie is doing is keeping his team in the ball game every time he pitches among his recent starts one of which included the one-hit a last Sunday against Oakland that's what he's doing tonight he's keeping his club in the ball game but he can't get the help not against the likes of Nolan Ryan [Applause] one out one strike throw to first and again Randolph back Nolan Ryan after his 12th win of the year tonight he got number 11 on Monday against Boston [Applause] good right fine Express nothing into you know how hard a guy is throwing with hitters sit on fast balls and they consistently throw them by you just makes the whole thing seem beautiful does that was a letter high fastball Mercer had a good swing [Applause] two strikes diversity fair ball tapped foul and it's still nothing into you know he talked about Ryan to being in a in a slump a bit earlier Howard he a boy was hospitalized boy was struck by a car a while back and he went through some tough times Nolan talked before the game about the cards and letters sent in by fans all over the country Mercer in the air shortstop Anderson Rudy's there he makes the call of the catch to retire and Paul belongs to the infielder until we out further there you see the bird that's on Nolan Ryan where his team is concerned pitching staff belated by problems nap inches Tanana not pitching the way he used to pitch the help of a kid named Montclair has been spectacular and relief Ryan has shouldered almost the whole of the birth he's been doing it Magnus bunsen late on a fastball nothing in one tanana's are now disabled they are really worried about Frank Tanana yeah are they me today and himself said he may not pitch the rest of the year one strike on Munson Nolan Ryan [Applause] short stuff Anderson [Applause] at the end of five and a half innings of play it is still California leaving New York by a score of two nothing [Applause] breaking ball from Tiana's hi I talked about Downing's hitting this guy has done an outstanding job behind the plate for California - I'll tell you when he was with Chicago he had a tough assignment Wilbur wood catching every day and then catching that guy once every second day or third day depending on the rotation for wood and he really battled ball one strike one Tiye outside two and one I remember Wilber when he was a baby-faced little guy showed up and Seattle a little sleep that's when he'd start for Washington State [Music] see I've got the outside Carter he's a pretty good picture so time Rob didn't he'd worked every other day at time for the white sighs every two days [Applause] to to to downing three and two now Tiana has run it fool downing is that problems all year long this guys talk about injuries spring training a hamstring Jam left thumb hold hamstring right leg shoulder problems Wow Tipton Munson can't hang up a thing about all those injuries for doubting it's only missed seven games this year [Music] three two count on darling program being brought to use exclusive of ABC sports now let's pause five seconds till our local stations for identify themselves channel 7 kabc-tv Los Angeles darling falling back off to you California leads it by a score of two nothing they hit the Yankees with two in the third crowd sending a placidly just waiting for Ryan's next turn against the Yankees the excitement now building in the air out of play Ryan has yet to give up evasive when you've had four previous no-hitters Yeah right to look for a fifth look boys right every time right Ryan tonight has walked four struck out five Tiana's matched him in the strikeout department luteus struck out five one three well Phil Niekro Randolph's gonna have to hurt [Applause] to throw another example of the speed that this young catcher has chopper over the head of the pitcher and I've told you earlier the infield is kind of soft here by the time the ball got to Randolph he didn't have much of a chance to do it well he had to come to the ball in order to get the man and he didn't do it well when you hunt your heart that's three out of three for downing he had an RBI single then he hit sharply enough but just gets that ball was hit from the exactly perfect place when you're hot you're hot yes sir he started tonight Isaiah 9:6 put him over the 350 mark here's Rudi in the air behind first base Willie Randolph makes the call that takes care of Joe Rudy Rudy is nothing in three trips get struck out twice at planner RIPTA bucks Bobby 13 2 for Negro 1 as well Fabiana had two home runs 16 what a year that guys have and Jeff Burroughs at a Grand Slam what's with it I did learn it early oh wow sober Billy Moore here's Bobby Grich high fastball from Tiant one ball and no strikes Bobby can app former teammate right there acting manager tonight her go see used to play around second mother in the hospital for three to four days internal problem Tess - another thing on Bobby Grich Howard talked earlier about the injuries that have plagued Grich throughout his career back injuries discs and a late swing two balls and a strike there's Bobby papi sir late second to fregosi's short made Jim famous and leading tonight - nothing it's a good field above started in the Braves organization [Applause] runner at first is Brian downing luigia trailing to nothing [Applause] got the outside corner good pitch what's up work inside back away in the service still leading Toronto what is died Cleveland White Sox leading Detroit [Applause] two balls two strikes on Grich one out California's sixth inning [Applause] fine outside full count again Texas over the Royals and the two games out in latest stock remember we started at five o'clock Pacific time San Diego runner over Montreal in Game one of two Cincinnati leading Chicago we just gave you the Atlanta final but the Cincinnati game rain delayed 3-2 pitch runner goes out of play by Bobby Grich and will do it again Dowling off and running in the fifth Goodspeed donning is one of those guys that can take the extra base on first a third Billy's leading the Dodgers Giants leading the mets and game Louis leading Houston one to nothing and Houston and Montreal suddenly beset by troubles much of the year the relatively unexpected leaders of their respective divisions now freshers grow at midseason three to two Bobby Grich and Brian downing takes off rich hits one back up the middle [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] eight basins off Louie teon from California here's Jim Anderson the shortstop nothing for to his strikeout and pop the first tough spot for Dion desperately trying to keep the game relatively close a no-hitter for Nolan Ryan but the Yankees do runs off the base there is run Davis again look at that wreck it's gonna be interesting to see how Billy handles his circumstance in the bullpen now with Gossage coming back available this weekend with your back in the all-star game you know Keith you look at the stats as you look at Billy Martin you look at the stats on Davis how could they expect any more out of Gossage than they've gotten out of that guy ain't no and he's really pitched well he wasn't there he wasn't there in May when the Yankees started falling way behind but its first couple of wins against Milwaukee yeah he stopped them dead no walking here's Anderson one out runners at first and third Keon missed outside Brian downing at third and at first base Bobby Grich this is where you gotta keep the games in the hand if you again Yankee outfield plays Anderson hit the ball toward right field nettles on the infield well off the line at third T on suono pitch high fastball Anderson chased it coughs even ball one strike one see all those gas trucks passing on the fifth they're empty what are you telling us Myrtle [Applause] ball one strike one Anderson takes outside pumps and back heading and it's two balls and a strike Giada through five and a third as thrown 117 pitches there you see the line score in the sixth two balls and a strike - Anderson squeezes on [Applause] both moving perfectly I loved that all Anderson has to do is get that ball down in fair territory doubting scores and Grich goes to second they both broke perfectly and especially doubting from third squeeze play the hit and run the cut off steal the poem those are the real niceties goal is to get again [Music] now the countdown wall to and strike two boy downing had a great break off there broke perfectly t on pitching from the stretch saw him all the way so he had to break perfectly Anderson back on the screen and it still to a two guy pitching from the window it's not so bad with that runner I mean he still has to get the good break off third otherwise the pitcher either throws one behind you knocks you down there's Nolan Ryan you know doesn't know what he's thinking [Applause] hasn't given up anything through six [Applause] ball two and strike two on Anderson Ryan and Tia have matched each other in the strikeout department both with five Ryan has walked 40 on three he's two and two on Anderson in the air right centerfield Apsara Bobby Murcer is there he's got it [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] and hit into relative now there you see a very happy California dugout 3-nothing now Anderson's 13th RBI of the year and back to the top of the order Rick Miller the centerfielder [Music] Miller is one for three grounded out in the first flied to deep center in the third and then triple off the wall in deep right-center in the fourth Bobby Grich the runner at first [Applause] and tea onsen with a strike on a fastball [Applause] still action in the Yankee bullpen [Applause] one pitch in the air deep fried center again but Bobby it's gonna get there in time he's got it and that retires the side but the Angels pick up one round here in the sixth inning on two hits and at the end of six full innings of play it is now California three people think Billy and I argue all the time actually we agree on just about everything right bill are you Betsy George we even drink the same beer Light beer from Miller's lights got 1/3 less calories in the regular beer and it's less filling and the best thing is it tastes so great no George the best thing is less spilling no bill it tastes great less filling George Billy it tastes great less filling George Billy yeah George you're hired not again light beer familiar everything you always wanted in a beer and less did I say hired there you see the line score through six innings California three runs hits one error the Yankees have nothing against Nolan Ryan top half of the seventh inning comes on brake pedals will lead it off for the Yankees and back to call the action for you here's Keith Jackson Thank You Bobby through six innings Ryan 89 pitches 35 them up them outside the strike zone 54 of them in the strike zone Greg nettles Reggie Jackson Lou Piniella Ron's first pitch is high and away for ball one Minnesota bidding Toronto six for goats beat Lemann Czech cabbage a home run Mike Marshalls 18th save in his 54 appearance [Applause] right through it he's fired in the Eaton though four no-hitters in his history already breaking pitches inside stadium is virtually full just occasional empty seat somebody who surrendered in the struggle against the traffic or other problems or perhaps stayed home to watch thanks to bus it amazing the angels lifting the blackout that's a home stretch but it's 3 & 1 [Music] Brian again grumbles a little he's been closed a lot tonight and as we indicated earlier doesn't really feel he's getting as many breaks on the close call as he might [Applause] now those pops it back upstairs out of play to run at all at three and two we did have interviews Howard talked to a number of the players on both teams prior to the ball game tonight but we run into a little technical problem and we've not been able to solve it as of this time and unable to bring you those interviews as we work their way through this game we're now in the top of the seventh inning for the angels on top three nothing 381 and nothing would zeros for the Yankee about challenging power against power nettles sitting on the best Walter number six [Music] here is a moment that Reggie Jackson thrives as he comes up on the seventh inning with an opportunity to ruin the string of zeros posted by Ryan here to fly ball to left field and popped up to the third baseman his two previous time [Applause] right jave a fifth no-hit game this was a kid who stood six to weigh 250 pounds as a sophomore in high school even then major league scouts told them you've got a major-league fastball there's the graphic he wants to fast Sandy Koufax to the class alone to strike pitch to Jackson high pop-up develops at 4:30 Len young he's already fast [Music] [Applause] what's the best a great left-hander of the Dodgers maybe the toughest out in the Yankee order right now at the plate seven men to get no runs no hits no there has struck out and walk right hand hit awaiting a good contact lion whines end the pitch fastball outside ball one [Applause] but now has been a 300 hitter six years of the nature's he waits the 1l pitch curveball slaves a [Applause] new hitting 318 with eight home runs 45 RBIs and Ryan he is really anxious to pitch now he can't wait he moves back and the 1-1 pitch fastball just starting to prod on just about every Ryan pitch as he is working in the seventh inning with two outs and he is yet to allow a head [Applause] building a plan [Applause] one two pitch for mine Wow reacting before and after every I don't drop the rubber looking in for the sign of down due to pitch and account field shading Piniella to hit that the opposite view now the metal s out of the infield Anderson and Lansford possibly talking about where they should be positioned especially Jimmy Anderson consulting with Lansford the shortstop of the Angels who knows how critical that might become working in the late stages of this game taking his time getting established at home play three balls and two strikes Brian go fetch [Applause] the ancient ways [Applause] [Music] [Applause] there's the line score on the special Friday edition of Monday night baseball here on ABC you may be watching some baseball history as New York has strung zeros all the way across the board and facing Nolan Ryan we go to the bottom of the seventh inning for Carney Lansford Dan Ford and Don Baylor Bryan needs six outs to become the first man with five no-hitters in his career and Lansford bangs it away and all of it happening on Friday the 13th that's why we call it a special edition we contemplate looking forward every positive I thought it was good to do it last Monday we were sharply up the middle of the land first [Applause] Davis and cockt have been in the Yankee pen apparently the phones ringing up there again he didn't play they go to work [Music] [Applause] [Music] Keenen has given up only one extra base hit that long booming triple by Rick Miller all the rest have been singles most of the ground ball variety so a low he's given up nine hits he's held together but against Nolan Ryan numbers and nibblers dan Ford stands in that Lansford off first [Applause] rotation is not typically policy pressure now is we work our way when the Yankees come up in the 8th to 9th it's gonna be exciting this crowd will yellow themselves hoarse every time Ryan gets one out [Applause] [Music] [Applause] le Yankee and filled it out way around toward right side there's Nolan Ryan - at the index finger well aware of what is almost within his grasp and to do it against the world champions would be the Nugget of all nuggets nobody out of Baylor is in the tool board [Applause] sit back for strike one good rip at a hanging curveball Tia T on get away with a high breaking ball there's Nolan Ryan again has allowed nothing to New York leading three nothing struck out six going to the fingernails [Music] [Applause] six strikeouts seven strikeouts for I'm Lansford off second board at first and it's one in one the lame on odd Fowler his pitching coach well away at two of what's happened Billy ever the manager wanting to contain the score and working in the bullpen outside and high turn one debater Gossage is now up in the pen for New York along with crap [Applause] look at that traffic to wonder Baylor popped him up on the right side for Chambliss now it's Munson Baylor fouls out to the catcher or the first half wide Assad t on right alongside Munson and Chambliss calling Munson all the way holding Chambliss office determined made the catch yeah made a good pitch that time on Baylor got inside with a basketball and there's Billy Martin to the mound to talk with Tia but out here the seventh-inning left-hander the flight so I said what no quit in him knocking Gossage they bring in the left no stake whether well if the ankus could get a little long ball going three nothing they're still in the hawk with two innings exactly what's in Martin's mind hasn't been T on he's pitched a good ballgame tonight failing three nothing Yankees haven't got a base hit off Ryan nothing [Applause] here's Willie Aikens the Angels first baseman with a single and an RBI at the ball game [Applause] I for the right side way in the air for Reggie Jackson and right for you [Applause] it breaks at second no third two out [Applause] Johnny three for three in the ball game I've been able to get him out find the shot to Center his first hit keep the necks to midfield call a shop ground the pass dent and then an infield ground a behind second Randolph just fell again amidst once again we looked at the man who matters most when you're in his position it just can't wait to get out there to get it done especially when you feel so overpowering as he is clearly felt tonight two out runners at the corner [Applause] and tiant eye with his first pitch those are the numbers on the two pitchers tonight [Applause] normally you would look at those pitches kisi would think it would be reversed 135 provide 104 for TIA all too [Applause] no that is not a rubber ball that Lewis is chewing on that's a little char with bubble gum wrapped around have you tried yes pretty good little bat Oh on a good and fast run in creeks with few Bassett rounded [Applause] [Music] [Applause] three balls and no strikes now to Daddy [Music] [Applause] flies in the buttermilk [Applause] as a strike it's three and one now 3-nothing California story is Ryan chewing on a towel waitin to go back to the top of the 8th inning [Applause] downing at the plate cause a walk Lakes leading hitter Farmington tonight three four three it has moved to the lead in the American League medic places are now loaded for dough Rudy [Applause] [Music] story on Rudy a couple of swinging strikeouts up to the second place Victoria Leon director 40 has been registering the moods of Nolan Ryan in the dugout during this bottom half of the seventh inning first the fingernail biting more recently as you saw the dowel wiping and the captain wiping [Applause] the artists hideaway to root there is that almost unbearable eagerness to get out there to do it to finish it off there has been no particular display of gamesmanship on the part of the Yankees as yet either stalling a little bit hitter stepping out stepping in fitting it around we might see more of it over the next couple of innings that's all strike the only time that there might have been a Yankee hit was with a man on first Chris Chambliss last a ground ball but a nestled in the glove of Willie Aikens as Rudy fouled one off and akin started a first too short to first DoublePlay nolan ryan again Eakins playing right on the bag covering the running the only ball that was hit hard off Ryan first through the long fly ball his first time up but wall by Chambliss the bases are loaded with two out the count is one and two on Joe Rudi get out into right-center field Bobby Murcer has room makes the catch three [Applause] Green I think California's [Music] so left so Brian two innings away I'm the only man do well five no-hitters in his career and to take it the rest of the way here is Big D all right now thank you very much it'll be Christian with Jim Spencer and Willie Randolph in that order the first three scheduled to face Ryan here in the eighth-inning and it's not allowed to hit he is struck out seven a shimla stands in he is oh-fer to tonight the pitch by Ryan is blown away off the glove of downing in the count one and O the infield swung to their left slightly on the left side last heard backin off the line of third the next pitch by Ryan is on the inside corner strike one call and Chambliss just it says something to home plate umpire Jim Evans Bryan comes right back into 1-1 pitch strike two one ball two strikes it count the Angels 3 and the Yankees nothing but the story as of now no and rocks in the motion here's the 1 2 pitch outside and again fans at the big a trying to do some firing with their heart 2 & 2 the count I'm deck Jim Spencer Brian peering in for the side he rocks into motion 2 2 pitch drive up the alley left-center the crack of the bat he said bounce a club Mexican and we'll bring on Jim Spencer he is oh-fer to angel baseball is brought to you by Chevrolet and just two short years over a million people have bought and enjoyed that Caprice and in Bella spencer left hand into the designated interfer manager Billy Martin as Ryan delivers a first file left side out of play oh and one the camp sellout crowd here at Anaheim Stadium tonight and they could be watching history in the making forty-three thousand two hundred and fifty here at the big a Brian with a new ball getting the sign from downy he rocks into motion a one strike pitch shying away and the count what it was one ball one strike the count Brian rocks back eater here's the one one pitcher could bother there to count 1 & 2 dispenser Ryan threw a curveball down at Deniz and Spencer could not hold up the crowd of 43,000 250 is the second highest we'll check that waiting for Spencer to get back in the chronic rhythmic applause if they picked up here at the big a this year the clap in the champ right there's the 1 2 pitch drive up the alley coming on as sincere push the second piece and we'll see how ik [Applause] [Music] [Applause] aim to make a dive it appeared that the bull took off on it the Yankee players out of the top step as they look up to the score the air was call and Willie Randolph will be the hitter [Applause] the ball seemed to carry more to Miller and Randolph stands in the first pitch is strike and the count is Owen 1 as Miller made the dive the ball looked like it came up and hit him on the heel Brian again ready he sent sanic pitch curveball that's in an over-the-counter zone on deck Bucky Dent spencer at second he's the second Yankee to get to second base tonight [Applause] Brian's two strike pitch fouled and then got a piece of Downing Sagar day Philadelphia has defeated the Dodgers 3-2 to nolza Winterset flip the loser McGraw his 11th save of the year the Dodgers scoring their two runs in the ninth inning balling a run short three runs six hits no errors for the Phillies two runs 10 hits no errors for the Dodgers and ready to go to the stretch here's a two strike pitch cutting please and wind are strikes out and that brings on Bucky Dent eight strikeouts for Ryan spencer still stands at second base den tonight is over - he has struck out he is flied to right Brian s assignee sets the pitch to them as just law and outside part of the plate and the count one and OH one ball no strikes Lansford back at third Anderson deep at Short Miller slightly in right centerfield and X pizza den as a strike over the outside corner 1 in 1 the count britches stiffer so to his left Bryan to the stretch and here's a 1-1 pitch I [Applause] Brian's next fishing in a chick swing yeah they call it a ball and the count goes to 3 and 1 we get a correction on the attendance tonight it's 40 1805 so that does not move to within the top five Crouch here at Anaheim State and ready here's a 3-1 pitch highball for ryan is v walker the night camp off he comes down the mound downing out breasts and masks on top of his helmet as a to stroll back to the mound and now they have their say Ryan took the cap down Matt is pulled down by downing he comes back behind the plate and we go to the top of the order and Bobby Mercer Mercer is so for three tonight has flied to right he struck out and he's flied to left now all of a sudden the Yankees without a hit tonight have put the tying run at home plate in the name of Bobby Mercer Spencer at second base in it first Ryan to the belt the pitch to Mercer is taken low and they count one and all on deck the catcher Thurman Munson time call and Larry sherry the pitching coach is going to the mouth and it might be right here that Larry just to us give no one a little bit of a breather downing out Brian cap till it back wiping the perspiration away downing out listening to what sherry has to say hilarious that is say the time has been taken and he goes back to the dugout downing back behind the flight Ryan's still strolling around the mound that takes the cap pulls it down infield straightaway for Bobby Murcer the outfield the same Bryan to the stretch the pitch to Mercer a bouncer hit Dakin's he has it he'll go to the bag he will [Applause] Oh a lean-to go to the men who many [Applause] it's the angels three the Yankees before we leave the subject and go to the bottom of the eighth-inning let's go back to Jim Spencer and Spencer shot out into Center fear with Rick Miller coming after a sinking liner and reaching for it the ball sinking right here and Miller down down down and did not come up with it it was called an error by the official scorer so the no-hitter for Ryan is still alive as we go to the bottom of the eighth inning for Bobby Grich Jimmy Anderson and Rick Miller the pitch Luis Tiant he is ball one outside well the Cardinals would Silvio Martinez shutout Houston one to nothing Houston seventh straight loss third baseman nettles has it and throws out Bobby Grich running gingerly with a sore hamstring [Music] and it Jimmy Anderson has knocked in a run he's old for too why his last time up Carrie Tiant rather deep to right-center field Wiggles in the Box shortens up a bit and that gets nettles moving to third base [Applause] as a call strike Nolan Ryan back in the dugout three outs needed for his fifth no-hitter - strike - OH American League black marshals eight teeth save for Dave goats tonight as the twins one the two strike pitch to Anderson punch to the right side drifting foul Roger will throw it out [Music] [Applause] [Music] the home of the inning is just sort of a moment of toleration relaxation the way things have developed tonight right they're all waiting for Ryan now with a chance to make [Applause] National League scores Montreal in that second game struggling and Chicago has jumped on Cincinnati the top two flank look at the Mets and the Dodgers Phillies Phillies beat him three two fillies are gonna be right there at scepter and Houston losing again Nikki Knowles got the window nightbeat's at Clifton McGraw got his 11th save for Philadelphia the Rick Miller the middle face it Anderson third second and hold [Applause] [Music] Yankee bullpen is busy again Landsberg the banner Davis is up throwing this time Ron Davis [Applause] [Music] and only need Elly Martin on his way to the mound BAM [Music] another step in baseball who is tr who has thrown 148 pigeons Billy Martin gone to the man [Applause] he will stay there until Jim Evans comes out and says let's get on with it Billy is shown at this point no inclination to take Lewis back with him and he won't [Music] what's on anybody's mind of course is Nolan Ryan Polly make baseball history get a fifth no hint - Rhea performance three men to get what a pity that this brilliant an extraordinary performer should have a tainted situation yeah three guys he faces aren't easy Munson nettles and the third out if he comes would be Reggie Jackson start thinking about that [Music] [Applause] top team up lankford shoots it up back of the plate Munson comes back and makes the catch for the second down [Music] [Applause] [Music] bored and then there are months and knit and Jax to begun [Applause] it no longer is in the mind I think that most people here all 40 1805 and a few freeloaders like us still whether or not the Angels win the game the consuming attention we'll go to the pictures now but out Tiant is trying to get the Angels out without further damage here in the bottom of the eighth inning in for looks and takes high ball one [Applause] [Music] [Applause] locked by Munson two balls and no strikes let's play [Music] Don Baylor is on deck two out - on angels Brina 11 hits [Music] [Applause] [Music] three and Oh both ball three balls no strikes got just enough from the inside corner of the letters to make it 3-1 this is one ballgame the weather left early in the Twilight on July of 13 [Applause] or swing our misses three and two [Applause] [Applause] [Music] three two runners go for hits it down the right-field [Music] [Applause] [Music] so Martin comes out [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] tshirt night a reminder that is [Applause] super year the preceeding Benson wins no losses he didn't even start the season with him Ron Davis has come on in relief of Luis Tiant his record his numbers we've spoken up enemy is been a bellwether for the New York pitching core in the absence of gussets he will pitch now to Don Baylor as the Angels have taken the lead five does a true run scoring here in the bottom of the eighth inning with Danforth at third base advancing over third base as a result of Reggie being unable to dig the ball out of the canvas over in the corner first pitch to Baylor is low for ball one [Applause] Davis came up from Columbus April 22nd was option Adam a third came back may 28th and for his even important outside corner called strike [Applause] originally the number three selection by the Chicago Cubs in the free-agent Draft January 76 traded from the Cubs for Kenny Holtzman [Applause] slow curve as punch to centerfield Mercer coming can't get it drops in the base in and for [Applause] [Music] with Baylor at first base two out three runs in Willie Aikens comes to the plate Brian is simmering in the Duggar confident I'm sure that he has his 12th win in hand that the corn and old time-worn phrased ain't the point there's another base hit up the middle naked and so young Ron Davis is greeted by thank the back singer for the California Angels and Brian downing now who is the American league's leading hitter will be coming to the plate and there is the Mandalay our [Music] California Angels giving the nation a good evidence tonight of why that presently in first place in the American League West this club can hit and when Ryan's in there and that get mocked clear they're equipped to go against anybody and remember they've been staying up there despite the absence of baseball's greatest hitter Carew will be back within a week downing looks at a breaking pitch for a call strike this is an impressive baseball team [Applause] punch through the right side and black flash endless for out number three so the California Angels 6-nothing back with the word [Music] unday win or lose [Applause] whether it was an error or not for the good of baseball I think the essential point is this we had a local Pittsburgh writer call up all the head against Bruce piece he lashed out against the rough [Applause] and here's the auto outside of that no strikes again here's the two old fish two months and a bouncer it's an inner city charges he [Applause] I don't think the pression be saddled with this kind of situation and us in the little indecisive as to how to play it to back up on it or come in and short hop it he came in and tried to short happen and he had no chance on Monson and so nettles now comes to the plate with Jackson for the on-deck circle [Applause] Brian h3a out three outs he had a chance right there if Anderson plays them a little cleaner was a difficult play for young Jimmy and the pitch misses for ball one [Applause] concentration at this stage of a contest becomes so fragile [Applause] popped up foul back out of play it's one on one to Nettles ready to go [Applause] [Music] [Applause] bow back here [Applause] the infielders for California fidgety moving around smooth in the ground taken off the glove wiping the hands [Applause] nettles pops it up Brian downing the catcher [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Bunsen at first one out Reggie Jackson up over three tonight [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and away [Applause] right they said centerfield Bunsen goes to there [Applause] [Applause] [Music] Reggie Jackson's been for single estimate [Applause] - flyball into right centerfield soon we'll tag and sick-ass here kids one angel so where's the turnout but it was a beautiful scene you just witnessed as this around paid tribute to Nolan writers and they have been coming by the thousand paying tribute there's the man that spoiled it Reggie in its solid right up the middle [Applause] Chris Chambliss with two-out makes low ball one [Applause] Brian will be 12 and 6 on the season and headed for the all-star game ball this punch foul on the left side out of play [Applause] we'll try to take the time to talk with Norman briefly when the game is done [Applause] it was exciting cookie sniffing that one up sampras at the count of one and two right Nolan Ryan right now with opportunity if he gets Chris pitches low he will have his seventh one hitter in his career [Applause] second one hitter for no-hitters just extraordinary to tutorship [Applause] season spoiled as he hits a solid single up the middle and the crowd spending and sure a conversation with Nolan Ryan when's the game six months back [Applause] I know you're going to be terribly disappointed Nolan losing the no-hitter in the ninth inning but another outstanding effort here the base hit by Reggie Jackson stopped it two outs away from number five ball back up the middle that I had a play on and I just missed the ball I wasn't ready for invisible back up middle and his I did what about the ball that Spencer hit that eluded Miller in centerfield well as far as whether that was together to tell whether he's got a slope on the ba-bling they're not it was an awful tough play I know that the play itself and the reaction from the fans and Yankee Duggars broke my concentration and after that I really wasn't able to do a regaining like I had earlier in the game so that was a big play for us I made a pitch in Spencer that previously had twins go away with him and Brian I just said we had him in account that would come in on him and tried to getting the chase bad pitch he got to fall up but we didn't get his father wanted and he hit the ball back in the middle the game on Monday night Nolan when you shut out the Boston Red Sox he threw 140 pitches I was wondering how that affected you tonight well I felt good up until after the play in the 8th and then I felt a little drained I don't know if it was psychological or physical but I didn't feel a sharp after that play and I just didn't have that kind of stuff in the ninth inning I was hoping might be able to spot the ball and maybe get double play ball out Reggie and he gave it to us but I didn't make play well a great effort Nolan thanks again it was a super job tonight number 12 for Nolan Ryan now let's go back upstairs to keep Jackson alright gentlemen thank you very much Nolan Ryan out 12 and 60 on the loser he's now six and four the final score California six the New York Yankees join us tomorrow for a full day of sports action Forest Hill KTLA I love he can fly but his lack of rhythm right get him in it yeah
