[Music] good morning and welcome to Memphis Monday 166 today we're going to be building a shed roof enough yeah we're going to put it right outside the entrance over our little deck we built a couple years ago anyway if you uh if you google a shed roof you'll discover that there's a lots of different ways to build them the design we're going to use I'm copying from a an example over at my buddy's house and as well as I can remember it and so that's the design we're going to use I've already got started so we can keep this in one episode so let's knock off the chitchat and what get to work no matter what kind of design you use you're gonna need some kind of ledger board to put your roof rafters in and those it is nailed into the studs on the other side and then held into normally held into place with bolts and that's what I'm doing now this is a long bit that'll go all the way through the side of the building then it's just a matter of putting the bolt through and tighten it up can use like bolts into the studs or some people just put nails into the studs but these bolts are easy to put in so I'm putting them in here's what I got done so far I got those five posts in with the header board up there for the rafters tested one of my rafters and I got the ledger board in along with the house it'll have nine rafters and the next thing to do is put in the joist hangers that the rafters hang on let's do that now you put these joist hangers in and all that metal Hardware rafter ties and all that stuff use these little things commonly called the joist hanger nails that's not the real name just called nails but they're hot dipped galvanized and a little short and fat nails you're backing up if you're not using these here's our little bench from last week works real good as a platform on our scaffolding but I've been trying to use it on the job here it's just too heavy to lug around I assigned it up and spiffed it up a little bit tried to give it to my wife but she didn't want it either so what I got to do on this rafter is cut about a 14 and a half degree angle where it fits into that joist hanger at the other end you know I've marked right hearing still black line this tie in is held in place with this little bracket but I'm not going to install that right now I've got to go back to loaves get some more rafters and I'm gonna see if they make anything a little bit more meat to it those look kind of wimpy to me okay Memphis I get it but how'd you get that angle up there well actually I went up there with you know a little angle taker and just copied the angle but there's another way to do it let me show you this might even be a more foolproof method get you a board and get your spirit level and make it level okay now it's it's a plum not level and then just mark the board and you can copy that in copy that angle directly off the rafter now for theory works that line we traced right off the rafters should correspond to this 14 and 1/2 degrees here and I cut just just to the right of line and you can see that work pretty well yeah all the roof rafters are the same I'm gonna go ahead and put in the rest of them here that I have and then we gotta go back to Lowe's and get some more hardware and see if we find some better tie-downs and so forth well I just got back from Lowe's and there's a 10 we're going to put on the roof it's 12 feet long and three and a half feet wide there's our roof beams so I got our roof joists in there and I called Joyce's I think they're called the beams there's that small tie right there that we just going to replace we're gonna replace it with these big replies here and we'll use the smaller ties on the other side I'll show you that a minute I don't know if these are any stronger but it sure looks stronger well I finally found a use for our bench from last week still do heavy I should have made it at it I could have probably made it out a quarter-inch stocking and being just good so the connection between the post and the this main beam here is I got this block in here it carries part of the weight these these nails here hold part of the weight and then these 250 degree braces whole part of the weight and I got to hold the same set up on the other side let me show you filming outside like this I can't even see my viewfinder but you can see I got these 50 degree braces and then they're nailed on the other side here and there's that the front brace and then the second brace will go on here but I couldn't put it on until I get the rafters in place because it's lower down so the scheme here is I've got a couple of nails put in there I'll try to rest this thing up on some nails now each one of the tie-ins here have the three nails in the in the main post and then three nails into the 50-degree brace same thing down here and then I'll put one of those small ties in in here well our tie ends are done on both sides of the braces everything's solid and good to go I guess we can start putting some roof on this bad boy let's get to it knock off the chatter [Music] then you saw me cutting the angle on this first stringer the first stringer so I'm using the a 2x6 at the top up here and then there'll be six rows of stringers extending out across tier and they're about sixteen sixteen inches across I mean between them stringers are supposed to be no more than two feet on center and I think we're about eighteen inches on Center so we're good okay let's install some stringers I'm putting the stringers in place I'm using that two befores four stringers on 20 inch centers and I'm using three and a half inch galvanized nails rather than measure anything I got a little spacer here and I use that to position the stringer so they're all the same they don't really have to be totally square or anything that just looks stupid [Music] [Music] well it's probably too windy to put roofing up by myself right now so what I'm gonna do I've got a trim it drag it inside do some trimming I bought 12 12 foot sheets and I only need 10 foot 10 foot 9 so I have to trim off this little piece off each one [Music] well there's our framework I feel like weaksauce calling it too windy to try get a sheet of plywood up her sheet is roofing up there so what I'm gonna do is I'm at least gonna give it a try we got slack in the wind right now well I got a couple of sheets of roofing on it's getting late let's pack it in for the day and hit it again tomorrow yeah I got out here nice early this morning for the wind started blowing but we didn't have a lot of trouble with the wind yesterday after all did we you know these are not little rubber washers and you put them you put them on the flat places in here on the on the tin [Music] this is our last full sheet right here but you might notice these little nubs off off the ends here we're gonna put short strips right in here to finish it out on both sides so stay tuned okay the plan is to take one of these sheets my last sheet and cut it in half and fill up the these end end pieces here currently I've got just about 18 feet they're under under the 10 and with these two additional pieces off about 21 feet so here's our last piece of 10 what I intend to do is go right along this center line here and cut it into two sections and when you get done you get this real nice little spring I told that away it's kind of artistic this is a new new tool I don't think I've ever used on the show it's a sheet metal sheer works real good it doesn't work on up and down things very well but on flat sheet metal it works perfect I had to go with slightly narrower strip over here because it didn't have as much overhang but my our roof here is 20 feet is 20 feet long and not 10 feet wide so a pretty good covered space it took 3 it took 300 these special screws here well there you have it our 20 21 foot long 10 foot wide shed roof we put over to the end over the entrance of the Memphis workshop the weight of the shed roof is held by these 5 4 by 4 treated posts that are in the ground 2 feet and underneath the we got 9 roof rafters set on 2 foot centers a double ledger board with the roof rafters connected with joist hangers and the ledger board is both nailed and bolted into place well it doesn't for another Memphis Monday Memphis Monday 166 today and yesterday and the day before that actually we built a shed roof over the entrance to the Memphis workshop we got a little spring off our shears we're trying to figure out what do you want to do with it hatch it didn't do anything but I think we got some takeaways and we had a lot of fun I'm just rambling on thanks for watching make sure you comment the tweet and Facebook and share and like and all that business doing the Internet but most important make sure you're back here next week for another exciting Memphis Monday thanks for playing along [Music] you
