ready to get back into our father's word here at the chapel we invite you to get your Bible and join us we're going to pick it up today and First Samuel Chapter 7 verse 6 and in our last lecture as we were ending the lecture we saw Samuel was admonishing the people of Israel and saying you know if you want to get back on the good side of Lord if you want to be delivered from the oppression of the Philistines then put away your Balaam worship and your astor often and love the Lord and serve him with all your heart and that after all the repentance is what brings the relationship back anew with the covenant God they returned the covenant God in the Ark of the Covenant from the Philistines and they mishandled the ark and some 1,170 of them were killed instantly unholy man cannot stand in the presence of holy God and then they took the Ark - courage after him been a DAB son Eleazar was sanctified to care for the ark and it would remain there for some 20 years and that's where we're going to pick it up today with Samuel still he had just gathered the people of Israel tomb is pay there's gonna be another war with the Philistines the outcome is going to be quite different this time because God is going to be fighting with Israel not with the Philistines so with that let's pick it up lest that word of wisdom in Yeshua's precious name father ask you to open eyes open years this day First Samuel chapter seven verse 6 and it reads and they gathered together - MS BAE this being all of Israel and grew water and poured it out before the Lord and fasted on that day and said there we have sinned against the Lord and Samuel judge the children of Israel in ms pay several things on this verse the the wording at the first of this is very similar to or one of the Psalms and what's happening here is that the water is symbolic of the people pouring out their hearts to the Lord in repentance this is true repentance on the part of the people of Israel and the fact that Samuel judged the children of Israel some scholars think well this was the first time that that Samuel actually judged the people and as they were repenting he basically talked to each one of them and said yes you're guilty you're innocent you're guilty you're innocent and that I don't believe is the case at all what is happening here is that Samuel is possibly consecrating the people for the war a judge so fet them in the Hebrew language from the prime shot of Israel is to set things right and rule and Samuel is doing a good job of that he sees the problem he knows what was going on at the sanctuary with Eli and his evil sons hophni and Phinehas and he's he's counseling the people God used Samuel as a prophet and he communicated with the people but he's setting things right repent of your ways and return to the heart your hearts to the Lord and He will be with you he's renewing that relationship between God and the people verse 7 and when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together to miss pay the Lords of the Philistines went up against Israel ready for war and when the children of Israel heard it they were afraid of the Philistines evidently the Philistines hemorrhoids had healed sufficiently that they were feeling a little bit aggressive here and after all what do we see on the part of Israel we see fear and Samuel is going to correct that but they have been whipped so many times by the Philistines that they're afraid of them and Samuel is going to like that and assure you the Philistines on the other hand they've got confidence in themselves based on their past victories no doubt verse 8 and the children of Israel said to Samuel ceased not to cry or pray under the Lord our God for us that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines and Samuel will hear excuse me yah hah they will hear Samuels prayer and he will answer verse 9 and Samuel took a suckling lamb and it's a babe if you will and offered it for a burnt offering wholly under the Lord and Samuel cried or prayed unto the Lord for Israel and the Lord heard him the burnt offering reconsecrated the people to a life to serve the Lord I think probably a suckling lamb because Israel was a babe in renewing their relationship with the Lord and therefore that's the reason that the young lamb was chosen of course the lamb a type for the Lamb of God now some might question well did Samuel have the authority to make an offering to the Lord after all he was not a priest he was a Levite for sure but not a priest but at this time God had chosen Samuel to speak for him so a prophet if you will and I think Samuel completely within the bounds of the law in making the sacrifice because the sanctuary had been totally devastated by Eli and his sons hophni and Phinehas the Ark of the Covenant wasn't there the tabernacle probably had been torn down and was it was just a mess it was in total disarray there probably wasn't that active priest for Israel at this time because of Eli's house most of them being killed so Samuel I think completely within his rights in making this offering verse 10 and as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel but the Lord thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines and discomforted them through them in the total disarray and confusion and they were smitten before Israel and when gods on your side that's a good side to be on and answering Samuels call unto the Lord and and discomforting the Philistines it's going to be a great victory for Israel verse 11 and the men of Israel went out of miz pay means watchtower and pursued the Philistines and smote them until they came under bethe car Beth car means house of pasture and whenever I think of pasture I like to think of God's Word and Samuel has people looking back to God's Word and trying to do things according to God's will rather than their own self-will a great deliverance from the oppression of the Philistines as God delivered is the Philistines into Israel's hand and when they were pursuing them that an army probably lost as many or more of their soldiers when they cut and run because it was common for the enemy army to pursue after them and it was pretty easy pickins coming up with a horse or a chariot from behind and cutting down the enemy as they were running for their lives verse 12 then Samuel took a stone and setting between MS pay and Shin shin means tooth in the Hebrew language and called the name of it a benissa saying here there too hath the Lord helped us and you might recall in an earlier chapter even easier is where Israel lost 34,000 men some 20 years earlier it wasn't actually called even easier at that time although it was referenced as that in an earlier chapter even easier named by Samuel himself because and it means stone of help and this stone that Samuel placed here was as a memorial to the fact that God had delivered the Philistines into the hands of Israel and in effect delivering Israel from the oppression of the Philistines and they had been under that impression for many years it was Samson who first started fighting against the Philistines and trying to get the the oppression off of his people Israel removed but Samuel is finally going to be successful verse 13 so the Philistines were subdued and they came no more into the coasts of Israel and the border this doesn't mean that they never came back across the border it simply means that they did not come back for any length of time or with any lasting success and the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel as all the days the samuel was a judge and saul who would become the first man king of israel as we'll see in the later part of this lecture today would have many many victories over the Philistines in verse 14 and the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel from ekron even unto Gath and the coast or borders thereof did Israel deliver out of the hands of the Philistines and there was peace between Israel and the amorite now this doesn't mean that ekron and gaff went back to Israel these are large areas of land not just a city ekron or the city gap but the region of that crowning gap and many of the cities that did belong to Israel at one time had fallen to the Philistines so under Samuel they've been restored back to Israel in fact Ekron and GAF at the time of Joshua under when the first allotments of land were made out did belong to Israel but fell to the Philistines and later wars the the ending phrase in this verse concerning the amorite s' the ammonites were known as ferocious warriors and they're not Philistines they're they're actually Canaanites and we're occupying the Land of Israel when God told him to go in and wipe out the amorite so obviously they didn't and to prove how fierce warriors the ammonites were they had basically ran the tribe of Dan out of his possession in the land which was the northern highlands and Dan ended up hiding in the mountains and the rocks to escape the ammonites but this is basically saying the Philistines kind of eased up and we're not fighting against Israel the ammonites on the other hand the Canaanites were not fighting against Israel it was a time of peace in Israel if you will and you do things God's Way and you can enjoy peace verse 15 and Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life and he would be the last judge of Israel that God raised up I'll add because we're going to see a little bit of help that Samuel was receiving although not much more on that in a minute verse 16 and he went from year to year in circuit to Beth El and Gilgal and miss pay and judged Israel in all those places Bethel being in the Northeast Gilgal the north northwest miss pay the southeast indicating that each year Samuel made the circuit or the circle around Israel judging the people of Israel setting things right and ruling verse 17 and his return was to Rhema for there was his house and there he judged Israel and there he built an altar unto the Lord and Shiloh the location of the tabernacle when the Ark of the Covenant was last in it had been Forsaken totally in disarray no problem with Samuel building and at his home in Ramah there was no other place to make offerings in Israel at this time the next location of the sanctuary the mosaic tabernacle will be in Nob and that will be established before the the ark under the time of Saul is relocated and the tabernacle relocated to Gibeon now in Chapter 8 Israel asks for a man King and Samuel didn't give up the office of judge but he had some help in judging as we'll see he appointed his two sons to assist him we'll see they weren't much help let's go to chapter 8 verse 1 and it came to pass when Samuel was old that he made his sons judges over Israel now at the time Samuel died only two years before Saul died so he was 86 years old samuel was when he anointed David and he lived to the ripe old age of 98 but he's starting to get up in years and he thinks he can appoint his two sons to help and assist him as he judges Israel in his old age they'd be assisting him well verse 2 now the name of the firstborn these are the sons of Samuel Joelle and the name of his second Abhaya they were judges in Beersheba they're sheba being on the southern borders of israel evidently samuel was taking the northern parts of israel and sent the two sons there to judge and his sons walked not in his ways but turned aside after lucre and took bribes and perverted judgment a lot like Eli sons me and Vinnie house you know many times we see this happen with not only the judges but the kings of Israel and Judah as well you have a good one Eli probably was a pretty good judge other than what he allowed to happen in the tabernacle with his son then came along as two sons and they were totally men of Belial they were worthless they were crooks they stole from the people they stole from God they had intercourse with the women who came to serve at the sanctuary totally profaning the sanctuary then you come along with Samuel no doubt a righteous man but then his two sons again totally worthless accepting bribes perverting judgment taking no doubt showing favoritism to friends or whoever had a dollar to slip in his pocket totally crooked who then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together and came to Samuel unto Rhema we've got a bit of a problem Samuel you know two sons are crooked when someone comes to a judge they expect justice and what they're getting from your two sons is corrupted justice verse five and said unto him behold thou art old and thy sons walk not in thy ways now make us a king to judge us like all the nations or the Goyer the Gentiles let us have a man king that we can see like the other nations of the earth have at this time verse six and let me kind of explain here that this is really you know not an illogical request on the part of the people there concerning Samuel is getting up and on up in years and soon it's going to be that Samuel is not they can't rely on him anymore to manage the civil government and we're getting ready to go from that theocracy where God is or his appointed anointed is over the kingdom the nation to a monarchy where you have a man king so their requests not all that out of line and order like I said II illogical if they could have found a man king who put God's will ahead of his own will it probably would have worked out pretty good but as we'll see as we work our way through the rest of the First Samuel and second Samuel a man King was not always in the best interest of Israel and Judah verse six but the thing displeased Samuel when they said give us a king to judge us and Samuel prayed unto the Lord God had promised a king but here the people are getting impatient and they're looking for a way to get this man came quicker you know and this was nothing new to God either and at this point I want to go to Deuteronomy chapter 17 and we're gonna pick it up the fact that God knew that the people of Israel were going to expect and request a man king let's pick it up with Deuteronomy chapter 17 let's go with verse 14 this is the Lord speaking to Moses when thou art come unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee and shall possess it and shall dwell therein and shalt say I will set a king over me like as all the nations that are about me again God knew that this day would come to pass this Deuteronomy was given to Moses long before the time period of Samuel verse 15 thou shalt in any wise set him king over thee whom the Lord by God shall choose one from among thy brethren shalt thou king over thee thou mayest not said a stranger or a foreigner over thee which is not thy brother the man you put as your king must be of the house of Israel verse 16 but he shall not multiply horses to himself nor caused the people to return to Egypt God delivered them out of Egypt and bondage to the end that he should multiply horses for as much as the LORD hath said unto you he shall henceforth returning no more that way don't go back to Egypt for horses don't go back to Egypt for any reason I delivered you the Lord speaking out of bondage don't go back 17 neither shall he they're referring to the man King multiply wives to himself that his heart turned not away neither shall he greatly multiplied to himself silver and gold shouldn't be concerned with self gain he shouldn't multiply wise well I don't know about you but Solomon sure came to mind I'm sure many of you thought of the same first Kings chapter 11 verse 3 the Solomon had 700 wives 300 concubines and what was his downfall in his old age he fell away from the Lord and started worshipping the gods small G of his foreign wives verse 18 and it shall be when he sitteth upon the throne of his kingdom that he shall write him a copy of this law in a book out of that which is before the priests the Levites the king of the land to know God's law to be familiar with it and I don't know about you I much rather have a leader of our great nation who reads God's Word regularly that one who is ignorant of God's Word because as the leader of the nation goes often so goes the nation now individuals can know the Word of God and follow it and receive His blessings but I'd much rather our nation received the blessings of God and you do that by doing things his way you have to be familiar with his word to know his way verse 19 and it shall be with him that he shall read therein all the days of his life the Word of God that he may learn to fear or revere the Lord his God to keep all the words of this law and these statutes to do them look what we've come to today verse 20 that his heart not be lifted up not for him to become prideful which was Satan's downfall above his brethren and that he turned not aside from the commandment to the right hand or to the left just to stick with it to the end that he may prolong his days in his kingdom he and his children in the midst of Israel no gray areas black and white right or wrong and you do that by being familiar with God's law now we're going to return to 1st Samuel chapter 8 verse 7 what does the Lord think about them requesting a man King and the Lord said unto Samuel hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee for they have not rejected thee but they have rejected me that I should not reign over them this is God speaking no no doubt he is insulted by this no doubt his feelings were hurt by this he wanted to be the king of Israel and no they rejected him for a man verse 8 according to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day wherewith they have forsaken me and served other gods so do they also unto thee rejecting the Lord he's saying they're also rejecting Samuel and Samuel getting too old in their consideration to be responsible for their civil affairs verse 9 now therefore hearken you listen under their voice howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them and show them the manner of the king that will shall reign over them you bear witness as to how long they are in wanting a man king verse 10 and Samuel told all the words of the Lord unto the people that asked of him a king you want a man king well this is what you're going to get verse 11 and he said this will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you he will take your son and appoint them for himself for his chariots and to be his horsemen and some shall run before his chariots it was a big deal that the King would have fifty men that would run before his chariot and whenever he moved from one place to the other the fifty men would run in front of the chariot yelling and singing make way for the king mate were gay for the king and Absalom and a danaiah two of David's sons would do the same thing when they made their attempts on the throne but God telling the people through Samuel you know you want a king to fight your battles for you that's not what you're gonna get you're gonna get a king that drafts your young men your sons into his service to fight his Wars verse 12 and he will appoint him captains over thousands and captain's over fifties the officer of the smallest number would be 50 and we'll set them to here his ground this means it's an old anglo-saxon word ear means to plough not only is there gonna make him your sons his military he's gonna put him to work in his fields and his vineyards and to reap his harvest and to make his instruments of war and instruments of his chariots your sons will do whatever the king's bidding 13 and what's more and he will take your daughters to beef confectionaries these are humors or ointment makers and to be cooks and to be bakers he'll be totally in control of all not only is he going to take your sons he's going to take your daughters and put them to work for him as well and he will take your fields in your vineyards and your olive yards even the best of them and give them to his servants this is what you're asking for and this is what you're going to get you remember a king by the name of a hab the husband of Jezebel he had a neighbor that had a vineyard one thing the only thing that going against neighbor off was his vineyard was a little better than a hat and a hab threw a fit in front of Jezebel and said I want a boss vineyard I offered to buy it from him and he wouldn't sell it to me Jezebel made up false stories about nay Botha and his sons and have been murdered so Ahab could take his vineyard verse 15 and he will take the tenth of your seed and of your vineyards and give to his officers into his servants he's going to tax you 10% of whatever you have and give it to the people that serve him and he will take your men servants and your maid servants and your goodliest young men and asses and put them to his work you asked for a man King this is what you're going to get from your man King he will take the tenth of your sheep and ye shall be his servants you're gonna be just like slaves to your own king no more are you going to enjoy all the fruits of your labor you're going to pay taxes to the king and you shall cry out in that day who do you think they're going to cry out to because of your King which you shall have chosen you remember the Lord was supposed to choose the King Deuteronomy 17 15 and the Lord will not hear you in that day you turned your back on Yahoo they and he will turn his back on you you chose your man King that's who you wanted don't come crying to me is what God is saying when you feel that he's opressing you verse 18 and he shall cry out in that day we got that let's go with 19 nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel was the voice of Samuel or the voice of God they're one in the same and they said nay but we will have a king over us didn't listen to the warnings of Samuel and you know they're not listening to the word of the Lord today it's the same even to this day verse 20 that we also may be like all the nations the and that our King may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles wrong again he's going to draft your sons to fight his battles 21 and Samuel heard all the words of the people and he rehearsed them or repeated them in the ears of the law the Lord heard the words of the people as they were spoken 22 to complete the chapter and we'll stop for today and the Lord said to Samuel hearken or listen unto their voice and make them a king and Samuel said unto the men of Israel go you every man unto his City or you're going to have a man King you go home and wait for my instructions and at an appointed time we will announce your new man King is well in our next chapter saying a Saul will be introduced and it's kind of interesting to see how we went about how Israel went about selecting their first man King I hope you don't miss it we've got a short message we'll ask you to listen a moment won't you please
