ready to get back into our father's word here at the chapel we're gonna pick it up today First Samuel chapter 6 verse 1 we invite you to get your Bible and join us today we're getting ready to have an old-fashioned Bible study here at the chapel well in our last lecture we saw that the Philistines thumped Israel's gourd 34,000 dead on the part of Israel hophni and Phinehas the sons of Eli the high priest and judge killed by the Philistines and then the Ark of the Covenant stolen by the Philistines taken to Ashdod in place of all places in the house of Dagon which is the god of the Philistines one of the gods small G of the Philistines this was a fish body with a man's head and a man's hands the next morning they went into the house of Dagon and Dagon was prostrate on the floor in front of the Ark of the Covenant and they thought that's strange and he must have the wind must have blown it over we'll pick him back up the next morning they went in and the head and hands of Dagon were broken off soon after God started smiting the Philistines first with a mirage which are humanoids the people of Ashdod yot them first the people of Gath said well you're a bunch of crybabies send the ark over here we can take it well the next thing you know they're all asking each other have you got hemorrhoids and they all said yeah I got hemorrhoids and then they decided well we'll send it over to Ekron and the people of Ekron said don't send that Ark over here what are you crazy we don't want all that calamity in trouble so people in a necron we're dying as a result and the Lord sent a plague of mice on the land of the Philistines as well that marred the land well the Philistines decided they had about all of the the Covenant the of Israel that they could handle and they decided well let's get together and figure out how is the best way to return they are to Israel we want it out of here for sure so with that introduction let's pick it up chapter 6 verse 1 we ask that word of wisdom in Jesus precious name is always father we ask you to open eyes open ears this day 1st Samuel chapter 6 verse 1 and it reads and the Ark of the Lord was in the country of the Philistines seven months and that was way too long for those who had been struck with hemorrhoids or worse and you know Israel at this time the Covenant God is what we're talking about here not just a wooden box the Ark of the Covenant because his throne was that in that Ark of the Covenant and when it left Israel they felt like that the Covenant God had left them as well and indeed he had God still going to be correcting the Philistines but Israel needs a little more correction as well as we'll see in this lecture verse 2 and the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners saying what shall we do to the Ark of the Lord question tell us we're with we shall send it to his place without offending Yahweh any more than what we have offended him now when this says preached obviously this is not priest of the Lord these are heathen people they have idols that they worship they have false gods that they worship diviners on the other hand or people who read chants such as the clouds for example the formation of the clouds and try and read clouds to predict the future and when it's simply chance is all that it is and on the subject of chance you see the Philistines weren't sure at this point whether all this calamity had come upon the Philistines because the Ark of the Covenant was there or perhaps it was just chance maybe they were just having a bad seven months verse three and they said if he send away the Ark of the God of Israel send it not empty in other words don't send it without an offering but in any wise returned him this is the lord a trespass offering then he shall be healed healed of your hemorrhoids the land healed of the plague of the mice and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you still thought that the calamity was possibly just a bad day a bad seven-month period of time maybe we'll send the ark of the way and we'll still have problems as what they're thinking verse 4 then said they what shall be the trespass offering which we shall return to him they answered five golden em rods these are hemorrhoids and five golden mice according to the number of the Lords of the Philistines for one plague was on you all and on your Lords you notice five being the number of the major cities or regions of the Philistines and they're saying you're the same plague came upon all of you and your princes as well is a little bit more severe on the eccrine i'ts because they were actually being slain verse 5 wherefore ye shall make images of your image and images of your mice that Mar the land and he shall give glory unto the God of Israel peradventure he will lighten his hand from off you and from off your gods and from off your land unclean things to God certainly he wouldn't take glory in them being the mice mice are unclean and you know mice you may not be aware but they're they're very prolific in reproduction and it's quite common that if you get enough mice they can eat a crop so not only is it unpleasant having that many mice around it's quite possible that there's going to be a famine caused by the fact that there's so many of them and in marring the land by eating the crops kind of like a locust army you might think of and in the way that they can devour the food from the fields or six wherefore then do you harden your hearts as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts when he'd as being in reference to Yahoo they have wrought wonderfully among them did they not let the people go and they departed or do you want the 10 plagues that came upon the Egyptians and all that Moses and Aaron were demanding is let my people go the Lord speaking and now they're saying let's let the Ark go we've had enough don't be like the Egyptians what's their plan verse 7 now therefore make a new cart this is an attempt on the part of the Philistines to show reverence to the Lord and that they're making a new cart and take two milks kind these are milk cows and what the means on which there have come no yoke I've never been worked and their vitality is not spent but full and tie the kind to the cart and bring their calves home from them what they're saying is take the calves of these cows and pin them up in a shed for example to separate them for from the mothers because obviously the mothers would not leave their calves but if they think their calves are lost any of you have any experience on the farm you know there's nothing like a mama cow looking for her calf she will spare no energy until she finds that calf so what they're planning on doing is putting the Ark of the Covenant on this new cart turning these two cows let them go not drive them or herd them but they're going to read what the cows do with the Ark of the Covenant as a sign of whether the hand of God is who brought all this calamity on the Philistines or whether it was just chance having a bad seven-month period of time verse eight and take the Ark of the Lord and lay it upon the cart and put the jewels of gold that's being the images of the image or hemorrhoids and also the mice which you return him for a trespass offering in a coffer of small box by the side thereof and send it away that it may go ignorant of God's requirements on moving the Ark of the Covenant and if you're not familiar with the laws of God as far as moving the ark the sons of in and were required to prepare the art not only the Ark of the Covenant but the other materials the goal in candlestick the incense offering the incense altar etc that the showbread table the the sons of Aaron were required to go in and wrap these dis furniture if you will and prepare it to move and then co a sites which is one of the three major families of the Levites would were responsible for carrying the the furniture of the mosaic tabernacle when they went from one location to the other it's understandable why the philistines of course would be ignorant of god's laws but it's interesting also to compare when we get to second samuel chapter 6 we'll see that david when he becomes king of israel the entire nation of israel it's his idea to bring the Ark of the Covenant from forgot gem to Jerusalem and they pick it up and put it on a new cart and they should have known better and we'll see what happens when we get the second Samuel chapter 6 on that but that's a an interesting thing for you to remember in contrast verse 9 and see if it goeth up by the way of his own coasts or border - Beth shamash then he this is the LORD hath done us this great evil but if not then we shall know that it is not his hand that smote us it was a chance that happened to us don't drive or herd the cows let them go put their calves up load the Ark on the new cart and if the cows take the Ark of the Covenant and the cart to Israel which Beth Shemesh is best Ramesh those of you are familiar is on the border of Judah and Dan and that's their plan here the diviners and the priests the heathen priests said here's how you'll know whether it was the hand of God upon you causing all this calamity or whether it was just some other pure chance that had happened maybe we just had a bad seven months verse 10 and the men did so and took two milks kind and tied them to the cart and shut up their calves at home thinking the cows leave their calves unless they are shut up or unless they're divinely influenced possibly the Philistines you're also thinking verse 11 and they laid the Ark of the Lord upon the cart and the coffer the little box with the mice of gold in the images of barium rods their little golden hemorrhoids and their gold and mice I'm sure God would be very pleased with those just as their priests and their diviners prescribed though they're following him to the letter verse 12 and the Kiner cows took the straight way to the way of beth shemesh and went along the highway lowing as they went and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left and the Lords of the Philistines went after them they followed them under the border of bets Jeannette let's get rid of this art once and for all it's caused enough trouble some of them thinking and the lowing of the cows of course and again if you're familiar with the farm life at all when a mama cow loses her calf like I said she won't spare any energy until she finds that calf but she has a unique call that that her calf and only her calf would know and the same for the calf has a a Bella tur that the mama cow would recognize so they're calling for their calves as they're going and looking for them is what's happening here verse 13 and they of beth-shemesh now these are Israelites were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley and they lifted up their eyes and saw the ark and rejoiced to see it the ark had been gone from Israel for seven months the Covenant God had was also gone and was it God that broke the Covenant no it was man because they had taken up worship of Bale and Ashtaroth and all kinds of other filthiness verse thirteen and they have beth shemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley we got that verse 14 and the cart came into the field of Joshua and a Beth she might and stood there where there was a great stone and they clave the wood of the court and offered the kind a burnt offering unto the Lord celebrating and rejoicing that the Ark had been returned to Israel and therefore in their mind the Covenant God had also returned to Israel now Joshua don't confuse that with the Joshua of the Book of Joshua the one who led Israel out of the wilderness and into the Promised Land this is simply another man by the name of Joshua verse 15 and the Levites you know have some Levites there took down the Ark of the Lord and the coffer that was with it where in the jewels of gold were and put them in a grin the great stone and the men of beth-shemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day unto the Lord these burnt offerings would have been the whole animal and this consecrating themselves to a new relationship if you will with the Lord is what they're thinking and this great stone there was an altar there and at this time the sanctuary of God the word the mosaic Tabernacle was in Shiloh and the Ark of the Covenant was there for a period of time the the tabernacle is in disarray the priests hophni and Phinehas no doubt began the deterioration of the tabernacle but it's without the Ark of the Covenant there anyway that the throne of God if you will the tent the tent by itself really lost its meaning and there really wasn't a tabernacle at this point in time is my point and so there were altars that sprung up throughout the nation because God said you know you will all offer your sacrifices before the tabernacle but let me ask you were and some people say that these Levites were violating the law because they were offering sacrifice in this location but let me ask you where were the sacrifices made to the Mosaic tent or were they made to the Lord Yahoo they of course they were made to Yahweh and the Ark of the Covenant was present so I don't think that they were violating any law but they are about to mess up big time and violating the law concerning the way that you handle the Covenant and and maybe the Israelites shouldn't have known better but the Levites surely would have known better and we'll see as we work our way on through the remainder of this chapter they didn't verse 16 and when the five Lords of the Philistines had seen it they returned to Ekron the same day they were satisfied and their mission was accomplished that as the diviners and the heathen priests said if those milk cows take the ark back to it that was the hand of God that brought all this calamity upon us we've returned the ark we've returned yaver to Israel that should be the end of our hemorrhoids and the end of our problems altogether verse 17 and these are the golden em rods or hemorrhoids which the Philistines returned for a trespass offering under the Lord for Ashdod one for Gaza one for Escalon one these are the major cities or regions of the Philistines for GAF one for Ekron one verse eighteen and the golden mice according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five Lords both of fenced cities and of country villages even under the great stone of Abel and this is a terrible translation a word in the Hebrew for stone is a bend and that's what this should read and you'll note the word stone and in your Bible is italicized which means it's been added from the manuscripts to ease the reading whereon they set down the Ark of the Lord which stone remaineth unto this day in the field of Joshua the bethe shemite and no doubt to remind others of what is about to happen so that they would not do the same thing and he this is yah have a smoke the men of best cement because they had looked into the Ark of the Lord even he smoked of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men and the people lamented because the Lord had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter several things in this verse to note number one Beth is not that large of the city and I can't imagine what would have been going on in Beth Shemesh that might have drawn back many people it just most likely wouldn't happen in the manuscripts this number the text read seventy men two fifties and one thousand which is one thousand one hundred and seventy and I think that probably is a much more realistic number than the fifty thousand sixty and ten would be 70 fifty thousand and seventy men that's just way out of line now and many might say well we sure have a mean God you know here these people were being so religious and they were offering sacrifices to him and just out of the blue he smoked them and killed them what I mean God we have and you're not very familiar with God's Word if that's what you think because God made it very clear in numbers chapter four of one place where and then the reason is you see God is holy man is not holy and man in his unholiness has no business standing before the holy Lord and God promised it wasn't a threat it was a promise that if you don't be things my way the Lord speaking concerning the Ark of the Covenant the penalty is death and that is the penalty that was carried out excuse me on these people of beth shemesh who dared to mishandle the ark of god the throne of god in opening it up looking inside of it like I said earlier the Israelites you might have been able to understand why they would not have known the requirements concerning handling the Ark of the Covenant but the Levites certainly should have known verse 20 and the mean Annabeth shamash said who is able to stand before this holy Lord God to whom shall he or it's better translated go up from us only the high priest and only then it was done that the time of the Day of Atonement could go into the presence of the Ark of the Covenant now all this prior of course prior to when that veil was rent from top to bottom after the crucifixion of Jesus Christ he is it's written in the New Testament he rent that veil from top to bottom and and you and I can't approach God directly now you can march right on into that Holy of Holies but at this time it was strictly forbidden only the high priest was allowed to do so that only on the day of atonement and with the blood of a goat animal bulls for him the sins of himself and the sins of the people unholy man cannot stand before the holiness of God verse 21 and they sent messengers to the inhabitants of cur ja-jeom saying the Philistines have brought again the Ark of the Lord come you down and fetch it up to you good news the Ark of God has been returned please come and get it and take it away from us so no one else dies in the process and now according to the thought of the time - that there were priests incurred after him who were trained in the proper handling of the Ark of the Covenant and we'll see that that God was pleased with that and there weren't any further deaths as a result of that but again the reason the Kirchhoff gem was chosen because there really wasn't a tabernacle everything was in disarray as far as the religion you know Eli and his two evil sons really did a number as far as the the sanctuary was concerned and it had become a disgrace actually Samuel will be the last judge of Israel we see that come to become about in Chapter seven and a judge I'll remind you once again of Israel and the Hebrew language is show fet them that's from the prime Hebrew Shafak which means to set things right and rule and that's exactly what Samuel will be able to do is set things right and rule particularly as far as the relationship of the people with Yahweh and also the sanctuary chapter 7 verse 1 let's go with it and the men of Kirchhoff Jim came and fetched up the Ark of the Lord and brought it into the house of abinadab in the hill and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the Ark of the Lord now these beams have been a DAB and Eleazar very commonly Levites at least if not of the house of Aaron must certainly these people this family was a family of Levites and were sanctified to keep the ark in their care the sanctuary is in total disarray when I say the sanctuary I mean the mosaic Tabernacle the tent of Moses verse 2 and it came to pass while the ark abode incurred after rim that the time was long for it was 20 years and all the house of Israel lamented after the Lord and actually it was 89 years from the time that the Philistines took the Ark of the vennett Africa thumping Israel Gord in battle to the time that David would fetch the Ark of the Covenant and place it in Zion and just outside of Jerusalem verse three and Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel saying if he do return unto the Lord with all your hearts then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you and prepare your hearts under the Lord and serve him only and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines the role of a judge to set things right in a rule and here we see Samuel taking the first steps in encouraging the people if you want to come out under the oppression of the Philistines the first thing you have to do is get your relationship right with your heavenly Father get rid of the the baitul worship get rid of the Ashtaroth and if you know that's all God wanted was for his children to worship Him and to love him and he said you know told Moses and the same thing to Joshua if you'll just do things my way you'll be blessed but as today people have trouble doing things God's Way and then they wonder why things happen the way they do why is there so much trouble in the world why are there so many disasters in the world it's because we don't do things God's Way I might ask you you know do you have any idols and you might say well we don't have idols in this day I go to church and so on and so forth well let me ask you do any of you have two houses or a house that you're having to work two jobs to keep the payments up and it takes away from your time with your heavenly father if the answer to that if the answer to that is yes you've made an idol out of your home maybe you've got a boat that you just I mean every spare moment that you have that you can get away from everything and get in that boat you go and it takes away from your time your relationship with your Heavenly Father those are all idols of this generation and do you need delivering from an oppression and I might do the same thing that Samuel did encourage you to set things right with your relationship with your Heavenly Father then you can expect start to expect to receive his blessing once again and you know a nation may be not receiving these blessings when we have gays open homosexuality open in our military and we passing laws to allow same-sex marriages in the United States the nation can be oppressed but if you as an individual do things God's Way you can still expect his blessings and maybe even more so since so many others aren't receiving his blessings verse 4 then the children of Israel did put away Balaam and Ashtaroth and serve the Lord only don't expect his blessings if you're serving other gods or other idols and Samuel said gather all Israel to miss pay and I will pray for you unto the Lord and as pay means watchtower it's the place where Israel gathered to make war against one of their own tribes on one occasion Benjamin comes to mind but you know Samuel says I will pray for you and in Jeremiah chapter 15 verse 1 God's talking to Israel there and he says you know I'm so angry with you that if Moses and Samuel were here to intercede on your part I would not listen to them and Moses and Samuel two of the greatest intercessors both types for the deliverer and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ so Samuel setting things right he's getting ready to rule and the deliverance from the oppression of the Philistines is just around the corner there's going to be another war with the Philistines in the very near future of the history or studying here and the outcome is a whole lot different this time than it was the time that we've covered in the last several chapters I've got a short message we'll ask you to listen a moment won't you please
