to get back into a father's word here at the chapel in the book of Samuel getting ready to have an old-fashioned Bible study here at the chapel we invite you to get your Bible and join us now in our last lecture we saw a very righteous pious woman by the name of Hannah married to Al Kenai and God had shut her womb and he had shut her wound for a purpose and she went to the Lord and asked of God and the very name Samuel if you translate it rather than transliterated is asked of God or it can be translated heard of God well God heard her impassioned entreaty of him for a man-child and she made two promises one that if God would give her a man-child that he would serve the Lord all the days of his life he would be dedicated if you would to the service of the temple and the tabernacle also that he would be under the bow of a Nazarite for his entire life meaning that he would not have a razor to his hair nor would he protect of the vine and the Lord heard her prayer and her entreaty and he answered and the result was Samuel and you know we talked a little bit yesterday about if a nation does things God's Way it can expect his blessings but if you don't do things God's Way you can expect his cursings but you know as the nation goes does not necessarily mean that's the way it has to be for you as long as you are doing things according to God's law the best you can you can expect to receive His blessings things were not going well for the nation of Israel at the time that this was happening the Philistines basically had their foot on the throat of Israel at this time and totally dominated Oh for the Israelites and it was because Israel was not doing things God's Way but we see Elkanah and his wife Hannah doing things God's Way going by the law making that annual journey to Shiloh where the tabernacle was located at this time making sacrifice to God and God heard their prayers and blessed them with the Sun and in Shadrach Meshach and Abednego come to my even at a time when Israel that are the people of Judah were in bondage captivity to the king of Babylon Nebuchadnezzar and you had Shadrach Meshach and Abednego placed in that fiery furnace heated seven times hotter than necessary to totally consume them and what happened nothing happened there there wasn't a hair on their head singe their clothing didn't even smell like smoke and you might remember Nebuchadnezzar looked into the furnace and he said it looks like the Son of God in there with them and it was the son of God in there with them and I want you to always remember that no matter how bad things are going for the nation if you remain faithful to God and put your trust in him he's going to be right there with you he'll never leave you you will never forsake you unless you leave or forsake him so with that we're going to pick it up with chapter 2 verse 1 of 1st Samuel today we ask that word of wisdom and Yeshua Jesus precious name father we ask you to open eyes open ears this day let's get back to chapter 2 verse 1 first Samuel and khana prayed and said my heart rejoices in the Lord mine horn is exalted in the Lord my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies because I rejoice in thy salvation and there is only one true salvation but man has notoriously always tried to create his own salvation it goes all the way back to Genesis chapter 11 soon after the flood of Noah's time the main what did man do finally started building a tower of Babylon and what was the idea well if there's another flood we can climb the stairway up to heaven and create our own salvation it carries all the way through to today when man tries to perpetuate his own life by cloning if you will and on a spiritual level man tries to create his own salvation with the rapture theory got to have a security blanket you know get me out of here before all the trouble starts with the Antichrist being here etcetera so there's only one true salvation that of course is Jesus Christ and rather than accepting the the love of our Heavenly Father in providing that salvation unfortunately many are still looking up the stairway of the Tower of Babel one and you know you might think that khana would be bitter at this time here she she yearned for a child for so many years and she asked God for that child and he gave it to her and she stayed at home and nourished that child up to probably the age of 10 11 or 12 and you might think well you know she might be a little bitter about having to give her son up to the tabernacle to serve Eli and the priesthood and the Lord at the tabernacle but no she's not bitter here in the first 10 verses of this second chapter we have Hana song of praise for the Lord that's porn - interesting those of you with companion Bible porn anytime you hear that in the Bible symbolic of power but also there there women at this time wore a veil that time around their face and this horn was worn by women in a certain way when they were with child and as from those would that were not with child if you got your companion Bible read that it's kind of interesting and there's Warren helped shape how the veil was worn so for whatever that's worth but I thought that was interesting but she's not bitter at having to give up this son that she was blessed with in fact because God is going to bless her with more children as we'll see in a moment verse 2 her song of praise continues there is none holy as the Lord and there is none beside thee neither is there any rock like our God and Deuteronomy chapter 32 we have the song of Moses and in that song we learned that there are two rocks and in verse 31 it states that our rock is not their rock and of course the rock our rock where the capital R is Jesus Christ and this phrase that she used none holy as the Lord as ever the cry of praise of the Saints verse 3 taught no more so exceeding proudly in what was Satan's downfall Ezekiel chapter 28 he got so puffed up and himself that he wanted to sit on the mercy seat rather than being the chair of that protected the mercy seat of course the mercy seat a place reserved for Jesus Christ not Satan let not arrogancy come out of your mouth for the Lord is a God of knowledge and by him actions our way in including your actions my friend our Wade father knows when you say one thing and you do something else and you will be judged accordingly I like this Lord is the God of knowledge all true knowledge and wisdom comes from our Heavenly Father oh sure you can be street smart and savvy in the ways of the world and have bill gotten games and feel like you are really getting ahead but when it comes down to it you're getting yourself further and further in a hole when it comes to Judgment Day knowledge the reverence of the Lord as it's written in proverbs chapter 1 verse 7 that means that says there the fear of the Lord but it can be translated the reverence of the Lord is the beginning of all knowledge but fools despise instruction and I ask you you know do you think you can receive instruction from your heavenly father is there a class somewhere that I can go and receive instruction from my heavenly father well he sent you this letter it's the Bible and your instructions not only out to worship Him and love him and what he expects from you are contained herein but also how to be happy in the flesh have you taken time to read it it's all there for you verse 4 the boughs of the mighty men are broken and they that stumbled are girded with strength this is a phrase that means that God can make the strong weak or he can make the weak strong it's it's all dependent on you as well as to what you receive man has no strength compared to God so put your trust and your confidence in him not in your own strength or the strength of any man that reminded me of what little David said when he came up against Sampson and in chapter 17 of the same book we'll get to it eventually but Samson excuse me Goliath the giant came out and there was nobody that from Israel that would go up against him save little David a teenager at the time and Goliath was kind of upset he said what am i a dog that you send this little boy out here to fight me and you know and David that out of the mouths of babes David said you know you come to me with your spear and your sword and your shield but I come to you in the name of God Almighty the God of the armies of Israel whom you have defied so put your confidence in your heavenly Father verse 5 they that were full this means rich have hired out themselves for bread and they that were hungry ceased so that the barren have borne seven and she that hath many children is waxed feeble again the point here is that God can make the rich where they have to hire themselves out in bondage so that they have something to eat he can make those who were hungry their hunger deceased by providing them with blessings and employment if you will or whatever and then the woman who was barren as Hannah was is given seven children that spiritual perfection in biblical numerix and then she that had many children becomes feeble in her old age she loses her sons at this time a family cared for the elderly and their family and for an elderly woman who have lost all of her sons was a very dramatic thing traumatic thing because that was who was going to take care of her verse 6 the Lord killeth and make up alive he bringeth down to the grave and he bringeth up reminded me of the teachings of Christ and the New Testament that if you exalt yourself you will be a base to be brought low or but if you humble yourself you will be exalted and God can do either he's that powerful he he can change any situation he can change people's minds verse 7 the Lord make a poor and maketh rich he bringeth low and lifteth up the wicked are brought down the righteous lifted up and your actions determine which if you love and serve him you can expect his blessings if you don't you can expect his cursing you mean the Lord will curse you're not familiar with Leviticus chapter 26 or Deuteronomy chapter 28 if you don't believe that the Lord has the power to bless and that he will curse those who don't do things his way verse 8 he raises up the poor out of the dust in other words out of oppression and lifted up the beggar from the dunghill dung he'll put for the deepest form of degradation to set them among princes and to make them inherit the throne of glory for the pillars of the earth are the lords and he hath set the world upon them you know go out on think of how many billions of dollars man has spent trying to determine the origins of the universe how many billions of dollars did we spend to put man on the moon I'm here a few thousand miles away and then you go out on a dark night get away from the city go out into the country where you can really see the night sky and look at that and see the formation of the constellations and the perfect rotation of the planets around the Sun and and the rotation of the moon moons around the planets and then man comes up with a theory that says that there was this big bang and all of that just happened to come to rest in that way no the pillars of the universe are gods and he is the one who set the constellations the planets the moons the Suns in motion he's awesome verse 9 he will keep the feet of his Saints you know watch after his elect and protect them and the wicked shall be silent in darkness for by strength shall no man prevail by his own strength shall no man prevail it would be a better translation of this and the wicked sit in darkness silently they don't have a clue they don't have an idea as to avoided our Heavenly Father is capable you leave God out of your life and you will fail verse 10 to conclude on a song of praise the adversaries of the Lord shall be broken to pieces out of heaven shall he Thunder upon down the sign of approaching judgment the Lord shall judge the ends of the earth and he shall give strength unto his king and exalt the floor of his anointed and you'll notice you have a star and most of you have that in your Bibles that star indicates that this has a a reference to Messiah in 99.9% of the scholars believe that this verse points to Messiah and of course if you're familiar with the Greek language you know that Christ in the Greek language is Christos which means be anointed and here this is the first time the anointed the first occurrence of the in the Bible the years pointing toward Christ but here we have the conclusion to Honus song and you know this adversaries of the Lord shall be broken to pieces that probably includes those of you who consider yourself to be an agnostic because if you're not fool or God what do you think he considers you if you're not for God you're against him and you are one of his enemies so get off the fence it would be my advice to you you don't want to end up on you know Judgment Day is something that many of us look forward to because that's a day of rewards those who are wicked and an evil no doubt shaking in their boots even more and more as they realize that that Judgment Day approaches and that again concludes Honus song of praise a beautiful song and I think indicating to her that khana was a prophetess because here in this verse 10 she's pointing to the strength of his King and we're talking about prophecy here that of when the king of kings and Lord of lords returns Jesus Christ and Hana no doubt a prophetess verse 11 and elkanah this was the husband of Hana the father of Samuel went to Rhema to his house and the child is referring to Samuel did minister under the Lord before Eli the priest under Eli and the priest and he was a good help as we'll see as we work our way through the last of this chapter they were thankful to have Samuel Shilo to help and no doubt he was a very righteous pious young man and grew up loving the Lord and serving the Lord quite different from Eli sons hophni and Phinehas as we'll see in the concluding verses and coming up verse 12 now the sons of Eli remember he's the judge and the high priest of Israel at this time were sons of Belial they knew not the Lord Belial means worthless or lawless and therefore refers to Satan himself in many cases they knew not the Lord they didn't fear the Lord they knew the law no doubt being priest the sons of the high priest but that didn't affect the way that they behaved as we'll see they weren't afraid of God one little bit it's a bad situation because here you have priests who are responsible for teaching the people the ways of God and here are these two clowns and I'll be nice and call them clowns because I've started to use another word but they're they're causing the people of Israel to sin and despise the worship of God through the offerings of sacrifice verse 13 and the priests custom with the people was that when any man offered sacrifice the priests servant came while the flesh was in seething or boiling with a flesh hook of three teeth in his hand now this is not God's law and this is talking about the peace offering that's being prepared for a sacrificial meal and that portion belonged to the offeror and here we're going to see the priests sending his servant around to whoever was preparing a peace offering for the sacrificial meal and we're ripping off part of the portions that belong to the people and using it for their own gain verse 14 and he struck it in and to the pan or kettle or caldron or pot no matter what utensil was being used to prepare the meal all that the flesh Hooke brought up the priest took for himself robbing the offers of their portion so they did in Shiloh unto all the Israelites that came bitter shallow the home of the tabernacle at this time and again stealing from the people and it's not that God didn't take care of the priest you see before the offeror would prepare the sacrificial meal for himself his family and his invited friends he they would remove the waive breast and the heave shoulder which God instructed in the law this will be the priests portion not good enough for the priests they are not going to be satisfied with the choice cuts that God dedicated to them they have to come by and send a man around to steal part of the sacrificial meal from the offer of a peace offering verse 15 also or even worse before they burnt the fat the priest servant came and said to the man that sacrificed give flesh to roast for the priest for he will not have sodden or boiled flesh of thee but raw now this is even worse you see who did the fat belong to the fat belonged to God himself and what they're saying is as they cut off the fat to place on the altar of burnt-offering to offer to God the priest would send a man around and say well look that's a pretty good-looking steak there let's cut that off and by the way make it a little extra thick cut and you know get part of the fat in there as well so this is worse because they're not stealing from man here the offer of the peace offerings they're taking God's portion at this point not gonna make God happy verse 16 and if any man said unto Him let them not fail to burn the fact presently without delay and then take as much as thy soul desire it then he would answer him nay but thou shalt give it me now and if not I will take it by force even the people realize that with a seriousness of this offense they said no put the fact and offer it immediately without delay don't take any of that whether what is God's give it to God and then after that if you want part of mine take whatever you want I'll give it to you but don't take part of God's and they would come around and take it by force like we're gonna have our BBQ today one way or the other and if we have to come and steal it from you we will we're talking about priests here and again supposed to be teaching the people how to do things God's Way and they're doing it this way unbelievable verse 17 wherefore the sin of the young men this is referring to Eli sons hophni and Phinehas and number their priest too was very great before the Lord for then abhorred or men I should say abhorred the offering of the Lord the people began to abhor the offerings to the Lord why because they saw the actions of the priests the priests were probably saying that well we're going to do things this way and then turn around and do in another way themselves hypocrites in other words they're playing Church telling the people probably the law of God but then turning around and doing the complete opposite a good way to make God very mad verse 18 but Samuel ministered before the Lord being a child girded with a linen ephod the sleek linen ephod probably a two-piece garment that was worn and made of linen much like David when they brought the Ark of the Covenant up from Kirchhoff Durham to Jerusalem and he wore linen breeches and danced before the Lord more or less preached to tyre if you would verse 19 moreover his mother that's being Hanna made him a little coach and brought it to him from year to year when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice again Elkanah and his family making that annual pilgrimage to Shiloh to worship the Lord and no doubt Samuel growing at this time as a teenager probably and each year she would bring him a priest robe if you will made of a little bit larger size so that it would still fit him verse 20 and Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife and said the Lord gives the seed of this woman for the loan which is lent to the Lord and they went unto their own home this is Eli expressing what a good help Samuel is in and around the sanctuary and he this is not prophecy but it's him entreating the Lord asking the Lord that he give Elkanah and Hana more children in payment for their lending of Samuel to the service of the sanctuary verse 21 and the Lord visited Hannah so that she conceived and bare three sons and two daughters and the child Samuel grew before the Lord he became a young man before the Lord and the Lord had shut the womb of Hannah now he has certainly opened it busting her with the total of four sons and two daughters 22 now Eli was very old and heard all that his sons did unto all Israel and how they lay with the women that assembled at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation profaning the sanctuary you know Eli was a judge he knew what the boys were doing was wrong I think probably his becoming a little bit older in years and feeble maybe why he didn't try to do more about it Eli's house his family will pay and this they lay with the women these are the women that came to help and minister to the sanctuary they had intercourse with these women who came it sounds like a lot of preachers that you hear about on television today verse 23 and he Eli said unto them why do you such things for I hear of your evil dealings by all this people the boys aren't listening to a lie they continue in their evil ways Eli continues nay my sons or don't do this my sons for it is no good report that I hear it's becoming a public scandal if you make the gorge to transgress rather than as priests should teaching the people how to worship the Lord properly how to honor him they dishonor him by their action and causing the people to sin because they're so they're really messing things up is just to put it in a nutshell verse 25 if one man sinned against another the judge shall judge him but if a man sin against the Lord who shall entreat for him notwithstanding they hearkened not unto the voice of their father because the Lord would slay them now this verse kind of loses it what what Eli is saying here is that if a man sinned against another man that God will judge that man or arbitrate or intercede for him but if a man sinned against the Lord who was going to arbitrate for him and there isn't anyone now at this time of course we have Jesus Christ as our arbitrator or our intercessor but we see it the last phrase of this they hearkened hophni and Phinehas didn't listen until the voice of their father because the Lord would slay them they'd already been judged in other words the judgment that had been placed on them was a hardening of their hearts they're not about to change their mind they're not about to change their ways and they're not going to repent so God's already decided he's going to slay them and you know this should be a lesson to those of you who think you would like to get in who are members of the cloth or who think you might want to become a man or woman of the cloth judgment begins at the house of God 1st Peter chapter 4 verse 17 will document that judgment begins at the house of the Lord he do things God's Way you receive his blessings you don't do things his way he's going to remove you and replace you and that's what's going to happen to Eli's family hophni and Phinehas 26 and the child samuel grew on and was in favor with the Lord and also with men and that's that's good that if you can serve the Lord and please him and also please man but listen to me closely it's much more important that especially if you're a man or a woman of the cloth that you please God more than men because if you're a man pleaser and you use words that tickle the ears of the congregation in other words you tell them just what they want to hear and only what will keep the funds coming in through the ties and the donations rather than telling them what God's Word says you're not pleasing God believe me so if you can please God do it and if that also pleases men that's probably men that you should be concerned about pleasing if you please God and that displeases men those aren't men that you need to be concerned about pleasing anyway so judgment has been made on the sons of Eli hophni and Phinehas God is about to send a prophet to Eli to tell him exactly what the Lord thinks about what's been going on at Shiloh in the sanctuary he's not pleased don't miss the next lecture and you'll see how it turns out for Eli's family and hophni and Phinehas we've got a short message we'll ask you to listen a moment won't you please
