the Lord put on my heart this week I'm gonna try to not cry with all the arguments that go on among the brother and how we want to fight about we want to fight with each other about semantics and different perspectives and it's good to read it's good to debate and discuss [Music] when you see brethren turn away turn away from this shoe it it can be really discouraging which makes me think we're not sharing our personal testimonies with each other because people can argue all day long Scripture but they can argue your personal testimony because nobody can take that away from you and what I mean by personal testimony I mean what has he done for you personally when you ran your Louis crying out how he showed up for you [Music] no one can argue that and if we keep sharing our personal testimonies and His goodness and how he's been so good to us personally because our God is a personal God he wants to know us so personally on a personal level if we keep sharing that with you together and with others there's no way that we could turn away from him there's no way because we build each other's faith when we do that when we share personal testimonies nobody can argue that nobody can argue what she's done for me personally when I was in the blow and I had to just cry out and he showed up firm in a big way on more than one account so I encourage you what we worship and sing this next song to dig deep and think those times when he showed up for you when no one else would whether it was through the words of your child coming up to you and just the right time or some miraculous thing that you you can't even explain start thinking about all the goodness all the good he's done for you and your personal testimonies [Music] and let's worship our personal guy let's worship the God who wants very personal level [Music] beaky [Music] lord knows [Music] what a beauty what a beautiful name my key [Music] nothing come past [Music] what a beautiful name [Music] Haley give us a very good word something different can't play in top we all have a testimony something so go to someone you do not know well and take a moment and tell them one thing that God has done for you I think it would be appropriate for us to fill this room with testimonies and praises to our father of his goodness and what he's done so we're gonna go ahead and sing this song but let's do this move people do I need to wait get your testimony out you know what it is [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] verses from Jeremiah 23 woe to the shepherds who destroyed and scattered the Sheep of my pasture says the Lord therefore thus says the Lord God of Israel against the shepherds who feed my people you have scattered my flock driven them away and not attended them behold I will tend to you for the evil of your doings says the Lord but it will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where they have driven them and I will bring them back to their folds and they shall be fruitful and increase I will set up Shepherds over them who will feed them and they shall fear no more nor be dismayed nor shall they be lacking says the Lord thank you now kori will bring us the Torah thought shabbat shalom to everybody do you feel that excitement feel that energy they're about to cross into the promised land we're about to go celebrate Sukkot and kind of walking in that excitement for a couple of weeks now and it's just getting more and more elevated making my plans on what to pack and getting ready and just again I go back to this group of people that have been wandering around and it's about over they're about to make this next step in their lives and it's hard to even wrap my mind around what they were feeling and what they were dealing with knowing that they're about to enter into the Promised Land with the King of Kings the Lord of lords leading their way I just had to be simply amazing so this week's Torah portion has this in Deuteronomy 31 so I'd like to read a little bit of that to you then moses went and spoke these words to all israel he said to them i am a hundred and twenty years old today i am no longer able to go out and come in i don't know i has said to me you are not to cross over this Jordan I don't know your God he will cross over before you he will destroy these nations from before you and you will dispossessed them Joshua will cross over before you just as Adonai as promised Adonai will do to them just as he did to the Sion and all the kings of the amorite sand to their land when he destroyed them I don't I will give them over to you and you are to do to them according to all the myths vote that I have commanded you zOC be courageous do not be afraid or tremble before them for adonai your God he is the one who goes with you he will not fail or abandon you strong be courageous I want to talk about that word that's translated be strong Kazak when I looked that up actually the first definition implies to grab hold of it's to fasten so many times I've heard this message this Torah portion Todd it's rock Kazakh rock Kazak pump yourself up get excited but I tell you we're kind of missing something were to get excited and were to cleave into fasten ourselves on to our King my strength doesn't go very far but his strength his ability his power that's what we are to cling to that's what we are to fasten ourselves to that's where we get our strength we bind ourselves to our King and he will fight the fight and he will lead it's not our job to lead it's our job to follow him be strong be courageous but it's God's strength his ability that I'm counting on not my own I want to read you with one last scripture this is Psalm 27 13 through 14 I had fainted unless I had believed to see the goodness of Yahweh in the land of the living wait on Yahweh be of courage and he shall strengthen your heart wait wait I say on Yahweh is the strength he is the strength our job is to have faith in Him and to cling to his faith or cling to him clean to that strength cling to his leadership and follow where he tells us to go amen all right if you'd pray with me please our Father our King I thank you for who you are I thank you for your leadership I thank you for your love and your kindness and your mercy towards all of us fathers we continue the celebrating of your fall feast walk into Yom Kippur as we we honor so coat father may you be the one that leads us and all these things may it be your spirit that dwells in us that leads us and gives us strength and gives us courage father we love you thank you may your kingdom be forever and ever we thank you for your anointed salvation Yeshua HaMashiach amen right all right you guys know that Wednesday is the Day of Atonement right so Tuesday evening at sunset begins the Day of Atonement and it ends Wednesday evening and sunset and the Bible says that for this 24-hour period from sunset Thursday night to sunset Wednesday night where to afflict our souls and they where to have a solemn day of rest this is the the commandments instructed us and so traditionally or typically afflicting your soul is is understood as being fasting and I agree with that we see that in several places throughout the Scriptures where it talks about afflicting your soul has it with fasting and you know I've seen some people argue against that I think their arguments are weak but so I would encourage you guys to be fasting from sunset Tuesday nights a sunset Wednesday night I encourage you to be fasting I encourage you to come here Tuesday night for the Yom Kippur service that we'll be having and its traditional to wear white it's not commanded to wear white but its traditional to wear white and Yom Kippur symbolizing purity symbolizing the cleanliness that has taken place on the day of atonement so if you choose to wear white that would be okay too so because the Day of Atonement is right around the corner today I want to talk about the Day of Atonement I'm going to talk about what is atonement how does the time with the Messiah why do we celebrate the day of atonement a number of things we're going to look at before we get into that let's go ahead and open up with a word of Prayer Lord your show we love you so much but we thank you we thank you for your sacrifice we thank you for your love let me thank you for bringing us here together thank you for this fellowship we have with other believers that we can have fellowship with like-minded believers that you've given us that opportunity father I thank you for your word but we thank you for your holy spirit lord I pray that your Holy Spirit would lead us and guide us and everything we say in doing that your your spirit would open our eyes and open our ears and open our our hearts receive your word know that your word would penetrate that your word would transform that your word would wash us and cleanse us that your word would conform us more and more your likeness thank to fires with your word the praise and we thank you in the name of Yeshua come in all right so I want to start in Leviticus chapter 23 briefly look at Leviticus 23 then we're going to jump over to chapter 16 Leviticus 23 talks about what our duty is Leviticus 16 talks about the priestly duty of the high priests and so I'm going to first look at our duty and then I'm going to jump over and look at the priestly duty Medicus 23 verses 27 through 32 it says also the tenth day of the seventh month shall be the Day of Atonement it shall be a holy convocation for you you shall afflict your souls and offer an offering made by fire to the Lord and you shall do no work on that same day for it is the Day of Atonement to make atonement for you before the Lord before the Lord your God for any person who is not afflicted in soul on that same day shall be cut off from his people and any person who does not I'm sorry and any person who does any work on that same day that person I will destroy from among his people you shall do no manner of work it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings it shall be to you a sabbath of solemn rest and you shall afflict your souls on the ninth day of the month at evening from evening to evening you shall celebrate your Sabbath all right like I said Tuesday night begins the Day of Atonement Tuesday night would be the evening of the ninth Wednesday is the tenth day of the seventh month according to the biblical calendar I understand you know if you're looking at our calendar you're like wait a minute October not the seventh month it's the biblical calendar so for those who aren't familiar with the biblical calendar I doubt it I'm not trying to confuse you it's not September or August or it's August as our seventh month in it July July is our seventh month that's right you're right what's weird is September used to be the seventh month that's what September means is seventh you know that October used to be the eighth month October 8th December used to be the 10th month December's the root word is deca it's 10 and somehow our calendar got all switched around and so now December is the 12th month and I don't know how that happened somebody change the calendars on us apparently at some point but the seventh month just began last sad hour last Sunday we blew trumpets to announce the first day of the seventh month so Sunday evening we had the Feast of Trumpets and we blew some shofars and we announced the first day of the seventh month and so now we're coming up on Wednesday will be the tenth day which is the Day of Atonement so now you notice that there are only two things that we're commanded to do on the day of atonement we're to afflict our souls and have a solemn day of rest that we do no work and to afflict means to cause pain suffering distress or anguish that's what the word afflict means if heard of people being afflicted with some kind of disease they've been afflicted with some kind of pain they've been afflicted with some kind of ailment something like that that is painful it is agonizing it it hurts you it is not fun that's what the word afflict means now this word in Hebrew is interesting it's the Hebrew word Allah and it's used a couple different ways in Scripture one is to flicked one is to humble and will you think about what is what does it mean to humble well you bow low you prostrate yourself on the ground that typically being humble is associated with a slave and so a slave of someone who they you know they will wash the feet of their master right a slave is someone who might get whipped a slave was someone who is afflicted so they're they're a lowly humble person but I want to I want to look at something in Deuteronomy 8 the same word or not how it is translated Deuteronomy 8 and how it's used in the context verses 2 through 3 it says and you shall remember that the Lord your God led you all the way these 40 years in the wilderness to Humble you Ana they come through the wilderness 40 years to Humble you and to test you and to know what was in your heart whether you would keep his Commandments or not so he humbled you Anna and allowed you to hunger you see right there in the context is telling us that this afflicting of them a na is tied to their hunger in the wilderness and listen to why he allowed you to hunger and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know that he might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone but man lives by every word that proceeds for the mouth of the Lord and you know if you're familiar with the Gospels you're familiar with Yeshua quoting this verse when he was being tempted in wilderness for forty days he was fasting and Satan came along and he said if you're the Son of God turn these stones into bread and this is the verse Yahshua quotes he says man does not live on bread alone but every word that proceeds from the mouth of God the context of this in both cases is fasting and in Deuteronomy they were afflicted because God made them hungry to teach them to trust him to teach him to live on his word Yeshua was fasting for 40 days they were fasting in the wilderness for 40 years I mean they they ate God provided man and he provided quail he provided water from the rock so they weren't starving to death but they were they were eating lean they were they were doing a type of fast it was affliction and there were days that they probably went without especially before the man has started coming and I said that after the minister coming that man every day but before the man has started coming they didn't have anything for a while and that's why they grumbled and complained were hungry but you shoe if asset for 40 days and says he was hungry I think that's a little bit of an understatement but he quoted this first and he says man does not live by bread alone but on every word that proceeds from the mouth of God and so one of the things I think of when when I think of fasting for the Day of Atonement is this is to teach us something this is to teach us to trust in God to live by his word to teach us that we don't live on bread alone but we live on the Word of God and so I would encourage you as you are fasting for the Day of Atonement that you feast on the Word of God you feed yourself on the Word of God you study the Word of God you you you don't just you know sit around holding your stomach saying I'm so hungry you take that opportunity and you pray and you're read your scriptures and use that as an opportunity to dig closer to draw closer to God this is this is a great opportunity for that to take place and it's a great opportunity to get your kind of clear your mind of everything else that's going on you don't need to be worrying about work or school or whatever other cares of the world that you may have on your mind this is a day that that we we are focusing on getting right with God we're clearing out the junk in our life infesting our sins repenting seeking forgiveness from God studying is we're seeking pressing in closer to him spending a lot of time with the Lord so that's what ever encouraged you guys to be doing Tuesday night through Wednesday night as your fasting used as our opportunity to feed on the word of the Lord so we're too fast and to do no work so this is something to keep in mind as we're looking at some of this other stuff because what we're going to learn is that our fasting and our doing no work is significant in the role of what the high priest does okay so keep that in mind as we move on so let's go ahead and jump over to Leviticus 16 now and for the sake of time I'm not going to read the entire chapter I would encourage you to go back and read the entire chapter later I'm just gonna kind of hit some highlights to kind of give you guys an idea of what the role the high priest does on the day of atonement because I had 19 pages of notes and normally I have about seven and so last night I was trying to figure out what I've got to do to get this reduced down because there's no way we're gonna get through 19 pages of notes in an hour because seven pages of notes in an hour is pushing it so I got it down to about eight and a half pages so I cut about half of it out so there's still a lot of stuff we're gonna go through today so you know I'm gonna try to go quickly and I'm gonna try to hit some highlights and we're gonna try to get through all this Oh got through all this as much as we can but honestly you know the 19 pages notice that I could have probably had easily 30 pages notes because there's so much stuff on this topic so I've had to be very selective on what I what I'm bringing out tonight and what things I didn't feel like I had to bring out tonight or the things that I didn't feel like we're necessary to bring out tonight so Leviticus 16 during verse 3 it says thus Aaron shall come into the holy place with the blood of a young bull as a sin offering and of a ram as a burnt offering and he verse 5 and he shall take from the congregation of the children of Israel to kids of the goats as a sin offering 1 Ram is a burnt offering and one Ram razor burn offering Aaron shall offer the bull as a sin offering which is for himself this is important to remember Aaron is offering a bull as a sin offering for himself and make atonement for himself and for his house he shall take the two goats and present them before the Lord at the door of the tabernacle of meeting then Aaron shall cast lots for the two goats the lot for the Lord and the other lot for the scapegoat and what they do is they have and is right right hand is is a lot for the Lord his left hand is a lot for the scapegoat or well actually not necessarily so they have I guess have rocks or something that they have with the one says for the Lord wants this for the scapegoat and they would reach in his hands and pull them out and they hope that the one for the Lord goes in the right hand and the one for the the scape goes and left there's a lot of stuff involved in that and I'm probably not going to get into all that today but just for mentioning that's kind of how they did it but the goat on which the law fell to be the scapegoat shall be presented alive before the Lord to make atonement upon it this is interesting too because the scapegoat brings atonement this is something a lot of people don't think about they don't mention and they teach false things about the scapegoat by the way as as el Azazel however you want to say it is not some demon that they're appeasing in the wilderness that they're not sending this code out to feed it this is nonsense as Iselle is a scapegoat and the scapegoat is actually a picture of something that you shouid does for us both goats represents something you sure it does for us and I'm not gonna be able to get into all that today either part of the notes that I had to cut out to get to the stuff that I'm getting to today but maybe I can do a teaching on that another time but it's very interesting the scapegoat is is tied to Yeshua it's important and it is something that brings atonement for us and to let it go as a scapegoat into the will nurse and Aaron shall bring the bull of the sin offering which is for himself and make atonement for himself and for his house and he shall kill the bull as a sin offering which is for himself do you notice how many times he has did it says this is for himself so Aaron is very important that the high priest be atoned for first before he talks for anything else this is something to keep in mind Leviticus 16 verse 70 318 it says there shall be no man in the tabernacle meeting when he goes to make goes in to make atonement for the holy place until he comes out that he may make atonement for himself for his household and for the Assembly of Israel and he shall go out to the altar that is before the Lord and make atonement for it and he shall take some of the blood of the bull and some of the blood of the goat and put it on the horns of the altar all around so he's made atonement for himself for his own household for the temple for the altar where they symbol of Israel so there's there's a number of different things that he's atoning for in this process verse 21 Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat confess over at all the iniquities of the children of Israel and all their transgressions concerning all their sins putting them on the head of the goat and he shall send it away to the wilderness by the hand of a suitable man the ghost shall bear on itself all the iniquities to an uninhabited land and he shall release the goat into the wilderness so again this is a picture of something that Messiah does I don't want to spend too much time on it but I am going to touch on just briefly he lays his hand on the head of the goat the live goat the scapegoat confesses the sins of Israel on and then he sends it away hey what did you shouid do he took our sins upon himself and he took them away he went outside the city that's why he was crucified outside of the city by the way people get up you know they're like why was he crucified out outside the city why wasn't he could you know if he was a Passover sacrifice why wasn't he sacrificed in the temple he wasn't it doesn't have to be exactly the way the Passover lamb was was crucified to be a Passover same thing he doesn't have to be is exactly the same way that the atonement sacrifice was done to be our atonement the point is all of these things picture him in some way or another and so the scapegoat the live goat that's not even killed is represented by him and it says that a suitable man is to take him and lead him out well you remember when Yeshua was going through the streets and carrying his cross there's a man they came and helped him carry his cross he was a suitable man he was the one that came and led him there come out of the city away from the people just like the scapegoat and you you know some of the verses that I skipped the pry priest interestingly the high priests where's like all these really fancy garments the rest of the year gold and and pomegranates and bells and this big breastplate and this fancy hat and and he is decked out everybody when they see him they know he is the high priest I mean he just he is fancy and on the day of atonement you know what he wears he takes all that off any wears a linen tunic plain white linen tunic that's all he wears he humbles himself what happened to you sure they stripped him of all of his garments it was humbled and when he was put in the tomb was wrapped in linen all these things are prophetic for shadows of Yeshua and like I said I can't spend too much time on it I just want to briefly touch on it to show you how much significance there is in all this so verse 24 and he shall wash his body with water and the Holy Place put on his garments come out and offer his burnt offering and the offering and the burnt offering of the people and make atonement for himself and for the people see there it is again Aaron has to make atonement for himself and interestingly that white garment that the high priest would wear on the day of atonement that linen garment he only worked one time he worked that year for the day of atonement and then never word again next year he got a different one or at one time never word again it was a special garment that only got worn on the day of atonement and only once is that not interesting all right so it's the responsibility of the high priest to do all the sacrifices to sprinkle the blood to anoint the altar to sprinkle the blood on the mercy seat and to place his hands on the scapegoat and you see all the different things that the high priest is doing on this day he is a busy guy on the day of atonement he is doing everything it's not like he's delegating different things to different people and saying okay you guys go handle this thing you guys gonna the high priest is doing everything on the day of atonement it is like his busiest day of the year and you notice how many times it says he has de tone for himself there was a bunch of times just in that little bit that I read I think there's at least six or seven times if I didn't count them but I just notice there was a bunch of times and I want to I want to skip down to verses 30 through 33 and something is different about this section in the video 16 verses 30 through 33 are different they change and it's describing the priest not Aaron and it's not talking about him in the same way as it talks about Aaron I want you to pay attention to this and again I'm just gonna for brevity just gonna read bits and pieces of it for on that day the priest shall make atonement for you to cleanse you that you may be clean from all your sins before the Lord mr. din say Ernest is the priest verse 32 and the priest who is anointed and consecrated to minister as priest in his father's place shall make atonement and put on their linen clothes the Honan the holy garments then he shall make atonement for the holy sanctuary and he shall make atonement for the tabernacle of meeting and of the altar and he shall make atonement for the priests and for all the people in the assembly did you notice that he didn't make atonement for himself isn't that different we see earlier the Aaron had to make atonement for himself over and over again it told us he needs to make atonement for himself first before anything else and we get here and it doesn't say it's Aaron it says the priest who is anointed and consecrated to serve in his father's place he makes atonement for everything and he doesn't need to make a dummy for himself this is a prophecy of the Messiah and this is what the book of Hebrews is referencing by the way when the book of Hebrews talks about us having a great high priest who serves in the heavenly tabernacle that's what he's talking about is this prophecy of the Messiah that's spoken about it in Leviticus so who is the anointed when you know what anointed means and in Hebrew it's the the word is mashiac right Masaya now the word here is is a the root word is is connected to Messiah so it's not exactly the same word but it's the root word is connected to Messiah but the the point is that he is the anointed one right Messiah means Anointed One who is consecrated to Minister as the priest in his father's place who has been consecrated to minister in place of his father well you could say well the the son of Aaron yeah probably but I don't think that's who this is talking about I think this is talking about the Son of God who has been consecrated to serve and minister what priest does not require atonement for himself well priest throughout human history ever has not required a tournament for himself I can only think of one his name is Joshua so let's look at a couple things in the book of Hebrews again I would encourage you to go read the entire book of Hebrews but for brevity we're gonna look at a couple verses in chapter 9 so verses 12 through 14 not with the blood of goats and calves but with his own blood he entered the most holy place once for all having obtained eternal Redemption birth the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled sprinkling the unclean sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh how much more shall the blood of Christ who through the Eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the Living God now the reason I said I think you should read the entire book of Hebrews is because that's the context of the book of Hebrews the whole the whole book is about the day of atonement the whole book is about Yeshua as our high priest Yeshu offering a better sacrifice and what he is doing and so I encourage you if you want something to read on the day of atonement read book read the book of Hebrews though that might be a good place to start verse 25 through 28 it says not that he should offer himself often as the high priests in his most holy place every year with the blood of another then he would have then he would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world but now once at the end of the ages he has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself and as it as it is appointed for men to die once but after this the judgment so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many to those who eagerly wait for him he will appear a second time apart from sin for salvation okay and what this is speaking about is there's two things that are taking place here his death his blood his sacrifice is our atonement is our Redemption it is our justification is our reconciliation but it says he's going to come again for our salvation which i think is an interesting phrase I think it's interesting that says that but you notice in the first verse verses 12 to 14 where I read it talks about the blood of goats and calves is what the high priest would bring and then it says that Yeshua brought his own blood if you look through you know what's going on in Chapter nine is he is describing Yeshua as a great high priest who has a better priesthood because he has no human successors and no human predecessors he stands alone as priests forever he has no sin he has a sinless life so he has no need for his own atonement or his own sanctification or anything like that because he's already holy he's already righteous he is sinless he has a better sacrifice because his blood is is greater than any other blood that could ever been offered and he's serving in a greater temple he's in the heavenly sac in the heavenly tabernacle serving in the heavenly temple of which the earthly sanctuary is only a shadow a replica when when Moses would give an instruction on how to build the temple he said build it after the pattern you see in the heavens God showed him what the heavenly tabernacle looked like and so Moses built a replica it's like if if we were going to build a model plane and you say I'm gonna build a replica of a stealth bomber you know and you decide you get this model plane you put it together you build this little replica and you say look I have a stuffed bomber well no that's cute you have a toy you don't have a stuff bomber you have a toy you have a model you have a replica it's not the real thing and that's kind of what we're seeing here in the book of Hebrews is he's saying that Yeshua went to the real tabernacle he wasn't serving in the replica he's serving in the heavenly tabernacle the one that actually makes a difference and that's the argument that's being presented is that his sacrifice is greater than any other sacrifice his priesthood is greater than any other priesthood and he has a priesthood the last forever this is the argument that's being presented and he makes a very good case I agree with him by the way so Yeshua is the Messiah is the Anointed One right yeshua is the son of god and he is consecrated to serve and to ministers priest in his father's place now not what he did yeshua has no need to atone for himself because he is sinless and perfect yeshua is our high priest who makes atonement for us he does all the work of atonement and we are simply commanded to rest and afflict our souls remember those are the instructions were given right the rest and afflict your soul what is repentance you're flicking your solar you're not you're confessing your sins your your grieving over your sins you're repenting you are afflicting yourself what is it what did he say repent for the kingdom of heaven is near our job is to repent our job is to afflict our job is to confess our job is to draw near he says the rest why are we told the rest because we don't get to do the job we don't get to do the work of atoning for yourself we can't we have no ability to atone for yourself nothing we can do can atone for our own sins you realize that no amount of keeping the law will account for your breaking of the law doesn't work that way and we don't have a sacrifice that we could offer it in any way even if we could offer a sacrifice it wouldn't do any good we can't atone for ourselves only the high priest can do that and so I want to give you guys a warning because I think some people get confused and they're fooled into thinking that by fasting by flick ting their soul that they're somehow earning their atonement and that's just absolutely nonsense you're not earning your atonement by fasting that's not what's going on so do not misunderstand me you're not earning your own atonement by fasting or by anything you do you were to rest and let him your high priest make atonement for you that's what you're told to do that's your commandment the rest and let the high priest do it okay so why do we need atonement why do we need it what's the point what's the purpose why and could we not just just say hey God I'm sorry and he said yeah that's okay I forgive you and move on why doesn't that work why couldn't we just do that scripture says the reason or the purpose is to make atonement for our sins because we have sin in our life because there is sin we have to have something to atone for that sin so I'm gonna get kind of into some some details and we're gonna kind of mull over this atonement thing a little bit and look at it from a couple different angles okay at its root what is sin sin is rebellion against against God right and his disobedience sin puts us at odds with God you realize that that when you sin you were at odds with God you were on the opposite side of him because you're not obeying him because you're not walking with him you're walking against him you realize that that's what sin is doing tennis is causing a separation between you and God and I know people like to draw these little nice little cute diagrams where they say you know here's you on this side and there's a little cliff and here's God on the other side and you know why there's a big chasm between you is because sin separates you from God and then they put a cross in the middle and say let's see you know the cross bridges that gap and allows you to cross over and get back to God I think that's a great illustration and I think it's there's a lot of truth in it but I think it it dumbs it down so much then immunise it's easy to present to a child that's great but I don't think it really helps us to grasp the the significance and the depth of what has taken place both on the sin side and what sin has done to us to separate us from God in and on the atonement side and what Christ has done to bring us back into relationship and so I'm going to break it down a little bit and try to dig a little deeper into that and keep that picture in mind because it's a great picture it's a great illustration I'm sure you guys are probably seen and maybe even drawn it on a napkin sometime when you're trying to explain to somebody their need for Yeshua and I'm not I'm not saying it's a bad idea I think that's a great illustration but I want to go deeper than that that makes sense all right so edits roots in his rebellion and it puts us at odds with God and you know the reason for this is because if we're serving sin we're not serving God right you sure said you can't serve two masters this is true masters don't share slaves you're gonna serve one or you can serve the other you can't serve both okay so which one are you gonna serve you're gonna serve thin and serve God and when you serve sin you're brought away from God you're put at odds against God you become an enemy to him the Bible says so romans six i'm sorry let's look at John 8:34 first jesus answered them most assuredly I say to you whoever commits sin is a slave of sin when you sin you are serving sin you are a slave of sin sin is your master we're you sure described it okay so if sin is your master you can't say God is your master right so you're no longer serving God you were serving sin this is one reason why we need atonement Romans 6:16 Paul confirms he says do you not know that to whom you present yourselves as slaves to obey you are that one slave of whom you obey whether sin leading to death or of obedience leading to righteousness the Bible says when we do this we become an enemy of God Romans 8:7 because the carnal mind is enmity against God but it is not subject to the law of God nor indeed can it be when we sin we become his enemy do you realize that think about what sin is doing in your life when you sin you become an enemy of God this is why we need reconciliation this is why we need a dough mint this is why you sure did what he did sin separates us from God and presents us prevents us from having fellowship with him okay we are dispelled ship from God isaiah 59:2 it says but your iniquities have separated you from God and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he will not hear he doesn't hear this the the prayers of sinners did you realize that the only the only prayer of a sinner that he hears is the prayer of repentance when you sin you distance yourself from him you're separating yourself your estranging yourself from him by your sin this is what sin is doing - this is the problem with sin second Corinthians 6:14 assists for what Fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness and what communion has light with darkness when you were walking in sin you're walking in darkness you're walking in lawlessness what fellowship can a righteous holy God have with that sin separates us from him it causes us to be distant estranged enemies and ultimately leads to death for the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord Romans 6:23 this estrangement from God is the problem that sin has created this enmity between us and God is the problem that sin is created right now how do we fix that problem now we're starting to realize why atonements important once you realize what the problem is then you start to realize why we need a solution you start to say well what does that solution look like how do we how do we gain that solution when your sin against the person who damaged that relationship with that person so if I sin against you what's gonna happen you know if I if I say something to offend you or I say something that makes you unhappy with me for some reason what happens we we get friction on our relationship right damn it's broken yeah now there are some times that it's it's easy to say oh you know what that's that's okay I forgive you but have you ever had somebody do something that it permanently damages that relationship where they have broken that relationship so badly that you never want to see their face again that's what sin does thinness is bad it damages relationships severely it damages our relationship with God when we sin we damage that relationship sin is the state of being out of fellowship with God you want a definition for sin that's my definition sin is that is the state of being out of fellowship with God that means whatever causes you to be distant from God whatever causes you to be out of fellowship with God that's sin that makes sense so when you become distant from God is because sin is distanced you from God there's something in your life that is putting seperation between you and God anything which disturbs or distorts our fellowship with God his sin listen to what John said about saying first John 3 whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness and sin is lawlessness and you know that he was manifested to take away our sins and in him there is no sin whoever abides in him does not sin whoever sins isn't either seen him nor known him little children let no one deceive you he who practices righteousness is righteous just as he is righteous he who sins is of the devil but the devil has sinned from the beginning but this purpose the Son of God was manifested that he might destroy the works of the devil whoever has been born of God does not sin for his seed remains in him and he cannot sin because he has been born of God in this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God nor is he who does not love his brother Wow you guys catch what he was saying you know there's a lot of people who say you know what we're sinners we're always gonna be sinners that's never gonna change we're just glad that we're saved by grace there's glad that God forgives me I'm just gonna keep on sinning and just keep asking for forgiveness because that's all I can ask for that's all it I'm us John would have a real big problem with that that is not what the Bible teaches the Bible teaches that Yeshua came to save us from sin he came to take it away from us they came to destroy sin so there's no longer our master that we're no longer slaves to sin that's what he wants to do in our life he wants to destroy that sin so that we no longer have to serve it just like Pharaoh and his army drowned in the in the sea that's what he wants to do to your sin drown it in the sea but who are you gonna serve servants in are you serving God are you slave to sin or your slave to righteousness those are the the things that the Bible seems to Paul presented that you should presented that John's presented that we're gonna see later Peter talks about it this is what's being presented in the scriptures is you're either a slave of sin or slave of righteousness sin separates you from God a sin leads to your destruction I'd wants to save you from that yeshua wants to save you from that and that's the point of atonement sin makes us a child of the devil according to John Wow Tinh makes us a child of Satan you remember yeshua called the pharisees tons of satan he said you were children of your father the devil he's a liar and he's been a liar since the beginning you remember that he called them sons of the devil sends a satan but it says that through Yeshua through the Holy Spirit that's been given to us we've been given a spirit of adoption and we can cry out Abba Father and you just taught us to pray father in heaven hallowed be your name it is because of yeshua that we are able to cry out to God and say he is our Father we've become heirs and co-heirs with Christ we've become adopted we become brought into his family through the blood of Yeshua as to what the Bible is describing to us it says it this happens but he says that if whoever abides in him whoever abides in Christ is not sin and you say well wait a minute what does that mean I mean let me reword it slightly when you are abiding in Yeshua when you were walking with him when you were in fellowship with him and you were listening to him letting him lead you when you're not making any decisions apart from him you're not going to sin you realize that it's when you try to make a decision apart from him is when you get into problems when you try to do stuff apart from him when you try to live your life without him when you're trying to run your own house when you're trying to rule your own life trying to be your own God do your own thing and you're doing it your way you're gonna you're gonna get into sin gonna happen because you're not walking in him you're not abiding in him but when we are abiding in him tens not gonna be the issue because he's gonna lead us in the right way he's gonna lead us in the right path he's gonna keep us away from sin that's what John is talking about you abide in him you will not sin problem is we're not really good at abiding in him are we I think our track record probably shows that if you were to look through my life and say I if we had a map of a timeline of our life and you have you know like you know like a bar chart or something where your graph where it shows like ups and downs peaks and valleys and you know a peak is like when you're walking with your shoe in a valley is like when you're doing your own thing and you're walking into sin I imagine there's more valleys and Peaks for for most of us I know it would be that way for me is I just still haven't figured out how to abide in him permanently I'll do good for a little while and then something will happen and I'll get distracted I'll go you know forget I'll get lazy I'll get whatever and you know pretty soon I'm going down that hill and I'm like oh no where am I where am I going how did I get here refocus you know and get back into your shoe again get that spike but how do you maintain it permanently how do you how do you walk in your shoe a per million and abide in him permanently that's that's the thing we need to figure out right that's what we've got to be pursuing is a life of constant fellowship with Yeshua a life of constantly abiding in him that should be all of our goal being constant communion with Yeshua and I think that that's something that the Apostles had figured out by the way I think they understood that very well and I think that that's what they were writing about and so many times and I think that's why they had so much authority and power you realize that I mean Peter walked and his shadow hit somebody and he was healed he had to say anything why because Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit he knew what it was to abide in Yeshua it wasn't wasting his time playing video games and surfing the internet right it was a binge watching Netflix right he was spinning his time with Yeshua and it you could see the difference in his life in in ours sin makes us a child of the devil John says because sin aligns us with the enemy of God when we sin we are in agreement with the enemy right we're saying I think this is a good idea I'm gonna do this I'm an agreement with the enemy at that point I'm agreement I'm agreeing with Satan and saying you know I agree with you Satan I like this idea I'm gonna do it your way that makes us an enemy of God does it not God says do it my way and we say now I think I'm gonna do it this other way it's dead in rebellious you being an enemy sin is perverse evil violent unrighteous lawless and godless well you sure explains this sin as a condition of our heart is not just this outward stuff we do it's not just murder not just adultery not just stealing visits in your heart too remember the Sermon on the Mount right he says you've heard it said don't don't be angry with your brother but I tell you all right you've heard of said don't commit murder but I tell you you only be angry with your brother you've murdered him already in your heart he's telling us the sin starts in your heart sin is a heart problem and it needs our it needs to be repaired we need a new heart the bible says psalm 51:10 says created me a clean heart O God and renew a steadfast spirit within me ezekiel 36:26 says I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh the Bible's telling us we have a heart problem we have a heart condition we need a surgeon heart of stone is a hard and dead and hardened heart it is hardened against the voice of God Ferro had a heart of stone yet a hard heart that would not heed the voice of God eros is a primary example in the scriptures of someone with a hard heart we see over and over again it says that Pharaoh hardened his heart Pharaoh hardened his heart Pharaoh hardened his heart and then a couple times this is God hardened Pharaoh's heart arrow is a prime example of a hard heart what does that mean he rejected the voice of God it would not heed to the voice of God he would not listen he would not obey we wanted to do it his own way he was he just stiffened himself up and fought even harder against what God was saying right he's a perfect example of what not to do this is we all have a hard heart we all have a heart of stone we all need a new heart the Bible also describes sin as a trespass or transgression you've heard those terms before right what does it mean to trespass then you see the sign it says no trespassing and you go in anyway you're trespassing right you have trespassed you've gone past a border you shouldn't have gone through you've crossed a line you shouldn't have crossed you have entered a territory you should not have entered then as a trespass the Bible says there are signs up that saying do not enter do not go here and we go in anyway we've trespassed that's with cinesín our life we've gone to a place we should not have gone then that what happened in the Garden of Eden God said you can eat of any tree you want except that one don't eat that one and what they do ate that one but one he said not to eat that's the one they that's very definition of a trespass he get it he gave them clear order clear boundary and they went through it they trespassed they went to the place they should have gone they went into an unauthorized territory sin also produces spiritual blindness spiritual truths are not visible to a person who is blinded by sin you ever notice that your your you know you may be reading the scripture and you're like wow this is a fantastic look at what I've got out of this and you showed something else in like are you talking about they have spiritual blinders on I don't see it sin produces spiritual blindness yoshua talked about that to the Pharisees remember healed the guy who was born blind he says your Pharisees are blind right now basically that's that's a summary of the conversation I know there's a little more details than that but as you Pharisees you're the blind ones he calls some blind guides blind leaders leading the blind why is the Son of God is standing in front of him and they didn't see him they're spiritually blind they knew the scriptures they didn't recognize the Son of God when he was standing right there they were spiritually blind sin produces spiritual blindness in our life you should criticize them because of it because of their own sin sin is a breach of the covenant between God and His people if you're in a marriage covenant right cut a marriage is like the best example we have of what a covenant is in our in our society today this is the best way we have to understand what a covenant looks like so you think about a marriage and the Bible describes our relationship with God in that way he says here's a husband to us right it also says that we've been adulteress Wow what does that do to your marriage that just rips your marriage apart doesn't it have you ever seen that happen his marriage I mean commits adultery that that wreaks havoc on a marriage whether they get divorced or not it still destroys the marriage destroys their trust destroys their their intimacy it destroys the relationship even if they remain married their marriage is still in a bad bad place and it takes a really long time to ever get recovered from something like that most marriages don't survive most marriages end up in divorce when there's infidelity like that because it's so devastating to the relationship Gus says that we're unfaithful to him we have broken the Covenant we have committed adultery other gods and idols things that we value above him to breach in the covenant but we have we are the unfaithful bride is the sin in our life this is the type of relationship problem the sin is creating sin is the reason we need atonement so what is atonement atonement is best understood as expiation and I know that's a big theological term that a lot of you probably don't quite understand expiation means removing the barrier the sin creates sin separates us from God an atonement brings us back into relationship with him sin separates us it creates a barrier an atonement removes that barrier okay so if sin puts up a wall atonement brings that wall down that's basically what it's saying Ephesians 2:13 says but now in Christ Jesus you who are once afar off had been brought near by the blood of Christ you were once distant you were once far off had been brought near by his blood Romans 3:25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by his blood through faith to demonstrate his righteousness because in his forbearance God had passed over the sins they were previously committed he passed over them the sins that were the the roadblock preventing you from having fellowship with him he went over them to get to you that's what it's saying right he passed over them that come near to you this is what he did through Yeshua but removing the berry of sin atonement provides reconciliation this is another theological type of word so let's define it reconciliation is the restoration of friendly relations or to establish friendship the action of making one viewer believe compatible with another so reconciliation is is a big deal reconciliation is what brings us back into right relationship it brings us into friendship it says that we become a friend of God because of what you sure that we reconciles us to him so we have relationship with him we become his friend but also reconciles our mind to him our mind is the problem our heart is the problem we are at it we are we are sinful by nature we are at odds with him we have the sin nature inside of as the sinful heart sinful mind sinful desires and reconciliation is bringing our desires in line with his desires bringing our heart in line with his heart our mind in line with his heart his mind reconciling us to him that makes sense making us compatible with him that's that's huge it's not just hey I forgive you go keep on doing what you've been doing it's okay it's I forgive you and I'm transforming you into a new creation giving you new heart a new mind new spirit giving you the ability be different than what you were before that's what Yeshua came to do and that is amazing to me and sadly that's not what people teach all the time reconciliation is making peace after two people have been at odds with each other reconciliation is when two people are war fighting against each other and they have a piece of cord I say you know what we're gonna put down the guns we're not gonna fight anymore we're gonna be friends that's what reconciliation is reconciliation is when a husband and wife have been separated and they say I want to I want to be together again I want to be brought back into union with you I don't want to be separated anymore I want to be reconciled to you they brought back into that relationship reconciliation is about restoring relationship second Corinthians 5:18 now all all things are of God who has reconciled us to himself through Jesus Christ and has given us the Ministry of reconciliation that is that God was in Christ it's that that God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself not imputing their trespasses to them and is committed to us the word of reconciliation now then we are ambassadors for Christ as though God were pleading through us we implore you on Christ's behalf be reconciled to God for he made him who knew no sin to be sin for us that we might become the righteousness of God in him God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself so through Yeshua God bears the consequences of human sin you realize that that's what he was doing bearing the consequences of our sin on himself that is how you know it cost God a great deal bring reconciliation your reconciliation comes at a great cost and God was willing to pay that cost for you why why were dirt literally he made us out of dirt why why would he want to reconcile us to him why didn't he just say you know what let's just blow the whole thing up these people matter what I say no matter what I do they just continue to turn away from me why didn't he just blow it blow the whole planet up I really why why does he bother with us and he loves us a lot didn't he Romans 5:8 through tennis is but God demonstrated his own love towards us that while we were still sinners Christ died for us where if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of his son much more having been reconciled we shall be saved by his life while we were enemies with him he died for us didn't die for us because we were his friend he died for us because we rose enemy Wow oh you die for your enemy make his place talk about the great love of God love surpasses anything we could ever think or imagine this reconciliation means that the estrangement between God and humans has been repaired even while we were sinners and enemies of God he delivered us and brought us into a relationship with himself new this is the point of the whole new covenant that's what the new covenant is that's the the whole point of it why do we need a new covenant because the old one got broken why do we need a new covenant because they weren't faithful we weren't faithful we broke the Covenant he says I want a new one anyway when I come back into relationship with you anyway that's that's the whole point why we need a new covenant we are horrible awful people who broke the first one and he says you know even though you're broken I want to I want to make a new covenant with you anyway you understand that you sure it came to save us from sin and restore our relationship with God atonement also provides justification this is another one of those theological terms people throw around it means the act of showing something to be right declaring or making righteous in the sight of God the process by which an individual is brought into an unmerited right relationship with God you've probably heard the term you know you're just justifying your actions right you're just yours trying to make excuses you're trying to justify trying to make it seem right even though it's really not right you've heard that right it's kind of what this means God is taking our wrong actions and he's making them right not making excuses for our wrong actions don't get me wrong don't misunderstand me he's taking our wrong actions he's making it right turning it around repairing it is justifying justification is unmerited that means you did not deserve it you did something wrong in deserve it and yet he made it right anyway justification by grace nothing that you did this is what Paul is arguing well most of his epistles can't earn your salvation you can't earn your Tony you can't earn your justification you can't save yourself you can't heal yourself you can't fix the relationship between you and God you can't do any of those things why because we're the problem we're the broken one we're the one that's full of sin we're the one that's blind we're the one with a hard heart we're the one who has ran away were the one who cheated we're the problem how can we fix it or damaged this is why we need atonement you see why I think that illustration with the little valley is kind of understated yes sin separates you from God we need Jesus to pass that like a bridge that is extremely understated this sin problem is huge Romans for Luther ADA says for if Abraham was justified by works he has something to boast about but not before God for what God for what does the scripture say abraham believed God and was accounted to him for righteousness now to him who works the wages are not counted as grace but as debt but to him who does not work but believes on him who justifies the ungodly his faith is accounted for righteousness just as David also describes the blessedness of the man whom God imputes righteousness apart from works blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven and whose sins are covered blessed is the man to whom the Lord shall not impute sin this is Paul's argument he's not saying store the law out the window you sing you're keeping the law is not gonna save you it's the argument he's making throughout the epistles you can't earn your salvation you can't earn your Redemption and those who try to teach you try to tell you that oh you you keep the Sabbath that's you got to keep the Sabbath to be saved even the Sabbath didn't save you are you gonna keep the feasts to be safe they keeping the feast don't save you you got any kosher to be saved that doesn't save you you're gonna keep any number of Commandments any I mean name em all any one of them that's not gonna save you why do we do it because we want to serve Him as we want to love him because for God so loved us we just want to love him back so you're keeping the commandments isn't what saves you that's just one way we try to show love to God say I love you God I'm gonna serve you I want to follow you I won't obey you I want to do what's right atonement is an act of redemption Redemption is the action of regaining or gaining position of something in exchange for payment hiring a debt to pay the required price to secure the release of a criminal or a hostage you ever thought about that I will talk about he paid our debt he redeemed us does that mean we were criminal in prison we were a hostage a slave to sin we had another master he paid are dead he redeemed us he set us free that's what he came to do this is the language is being used in the scriptures so his blood paid the price for your freedom Romans 3:23 and 24 says for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus he redeemed us by his blood he redeemed us we are justified which means we are made right with God by grace which is unmerited favor we did nothing to earn through the redemption our sins our sin-debt being paid by Yeshua justified by grace through the redemption of Yeshua what he's saying in Romans 3:24 justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus we're made right with God by the unmerited favor of yeshua paying our sin-debt for us Wow first Peter 2:24 says for him who himself bore our sins in his own body on the tree that we having died to sin might live for righteousness by whose stripes you were healed he died in our place he took our punishment he paid our debt he took our sin on himself he took our shame he took our guilt he bore our burden it paid our debt ya scapegoat exactly sins of the world are laid on a shoulder the Bible says God so loved the world right why would he do that for me why would he do that for you like I said we're dirt literally we are of the dirt the Bible says I don't know which is worse you know the atheist say we evolved from apes the Bible says we came out of the dirt which I don't know which is a worst beginning I mean they're both pretty crummy but um but the bible does say that's it God loves us atheists don't know that I don't know that God loves them they just think that they're monkeys monkeys who was who can talk and draw on pieces of paper they don't know that God loves them regarde so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life atonement this is the gospel in Leviticus 16 you realize right what I read earlier telling you what the gospel is from Leviticus 16 it's telling us who the Messiah is and what he came to do for us it came to bring atonement as our high priest not crazy you didn't know the gospel was in Leviticus 16 did you the Day of Atonement teaches us each is the gospel teaches us our need are you sure the Day of Atonement is a prophetic picture prophetic foreshadow of what Yeshua do in your life but he came to do when he died on the cross he died for your sins the day of atonement shows us what he wants to do in our life he wants to redeem us it was to bring us back into relationship wants to mend that relationship it was to destroy that sin Hebrews gives one final warning I don't have this in my notes Hebrews gives one final warning chapter 10 talks about what great an offense it is for us and pull the Son of God underfoot after he's given such a great ice don't do that baby heads or just sure we love you so much and we thank you for your atonement we thank you for your love we thank you for your mercy and your forgiveness but help us not to forget I was not to neglect what you've done for us or help us to lay hold that atonement that you provided for us but I pray that you would Radek a sin she would just destroy sin in our lives helped us to learn to walk with you help us to learn to be at fellowship with you that's it's the problem sin separates us from you sin separates us from you we need to learn how to walk with you how to walk in fellowship with you we abide in Christ we will not sin Bible says or teach us how to do that it just how to abide in you I repair the truth Phyllis all with your Holy Spirit that you would lead us and guide us but help us the area voice help us to walk with you I was not to stray we're prone to do Lord as we prepare our hearts for the Day of Atonement I pray that you would prepare our hearts for the Day of Atonement or that you would put in us clean heart he would take away the heart of stone give us a soft heart but that you would transform us and create create in us something new we'd be a new creation in you that we would no longer be like we were before who would renew our hearts renew our minds your spirit renew the relationship with you draws closer to you but we love you and we praise you sure anybody have any prayer requests you would like to be prayed over tonight there's a little later than normal sorry at least I didn't have 19 pages of notes right as like Thank You Lord
