what's the worst example of overbearing parents you've ever seen I've had a friend since elementary school whose mom has always been super strict we're in our twenties now and in college and her mom still won't let her get her license the worst part is my friend lets her mom continue to control her like this despite her being an adult she's at school with a full scholarship so it's not like she depends on her for financial support abuse will freak you right up your friend should go to counseling we're depending how deep the hooks are set they may resent you for the suggestion growing up my next-door neighbors told my parents that they needed to have my brother and I go to bed at seven o'clock because their kids could see our bedroom lights on after they had to go to bed and it made them jealous I hope your parents told them to Frick off my parents called common app broke into my account and locked me out because I started to send my college applications out without telling them I had my college advisors and principal's approval and went to boarding school across the country from my parents know a kid whose mom neverthought whatever school he was in was good enough he could never make friends because he'd change schools two times a year and was never allowed to follow anything that he enjoyed everything he did had to be something that would put him on track for an Ivy League school gets into an Ivy League school and finally get some freedom away from her joins a band or discovers singing and apparently was really frickin good at it when he graduated he wanted to stay with the band and perform on weekends but the mom kept grating him for it and call him childish he now works an upscale job in corporate America that his mom chose for him through connections that he hates after graduation his dad snapped and left his mum literally just woke up one morning got into his car and drove off my aunt didn't let her children leave her sight watch TV make friends and didn't feed them anything but plain rice and chicken for yours there was a mandatory hour of cuddle time with mom they barely knew how to be human beings the youngest was eight and couldn't dress herself since her mother did it every day for all three kids she homeschooled them too only time they left the house was to go to the doctor or dentist oldest left the house and immediately lost her freaking mind she had no idea how to say no and didn't want to anyway since she was now free got addicted to him and less than a month and was dead and - from an overdose of M&C as well as alcohol poisoning and he's sobered up instantly and handed the other two I think there were eight and ten over to the dad before hanging herself in her backyard the two kids don't even remember her they barely remember anything before they went to live with their dad as far as I know they're both mostly normal boy still doesn't seasoned his chicken though I honestly feel really bad for your aunt it must have been too painful to realize that her parenting techniques rather than protecting and nurturing her daughter led her directly to harm that guilt must have been overwhelming a girl came to a sleepover I was invited to when I was around 14 or 15 this girl had to call and ask her parents before we could watch Mulan they said no because it glorified the occult I teach sewing lessons had a parent end a lesson on how to make skirts for fear the student might make a short s skirt with this knowledge I'm in my mid-twenties and my mom asked her attractive girl who I barely knew from high school if she was mad at me because she didn't say hi to me at work good God not terrible but back when kids used to play outside more there was this little kid who was not allowed to leave his driveway one day he went off into the cul-de-sac three houses away to play with a group of kids throwing a football back and forth to each other the father ended up literally dragging the kid back home the kid started a scream abandon his garage and got a 13 year-old girl pregnant at 12 years old that last sentence made my stomach drop I hope both those kids are doing better now I managed sheduled and hired for a fast-food place in a good neighborhood a kid comes in for an interview in a button-up entire I am liking him want to know if he has extracurriculars so I can make sure neither of us are wasting our time I hire him on the spot comes in on his first day looks like mom dropped him off okay fair enough first job whatever she sits down without ordering and watches him walk to the back to do computer BS I go back to the front to work and she is still there I go check the lobby about thirty minutes later still there I get off a couple hours later I get a call from my coworker asking about the new kid I figure it was about his time card or something number woman is still there manager wanted to know if the kid is special or something he was not wouldn't have mattered anyway besides accommodating him get to work the next day answer the phone woman wants his schedule I say I can't give it out he needs to ask for it or come to the store she argues with me for a couple of minutes I absolutely refused to give out his schedule he comes in about an hour later to get his hours I had to pencil him and so I have the entire schedule booked for the week out she tried to take it from me I snatched it and tossed it on the employee counter and tell her in the most I'm being polite but Frick you voice that she is not allowed to look at how schedules because she's not an employee and that it is protected communications she Huff's I give the kid his schedule don't see her for a while great about two months later she calls the store to tell me to cut his hours because he's too busy now I called him into the office while I wrote schedules for the next week and asked him if he wanted his hours cut he had no idea why I would ask to cut his hours I explained his mom called he looked at me with a 1000 yard stare and said I just turned 18 shed you owe me 40 hours a week please I get out of school at 11 o'clock I can be here at 11:30 I scheduled him 38 hours mom calls and tries to yell at me I explained that her I am NOT her child or a child at all and will not be yelled at be her adult child asked for full time work see I do not under any circumstance ell her any explanation for how I do my job she calls two rungs up the ladder and speaks to the franchise supervisor he told her if she's so concerned about his work life to fill out an application three and a half years later I am NOT their kid is a manager mom is still ridiculous ta DR hire an adult worker mom tries to make me cut his hours he asks for more mom tries to get me fired by going above my boss to his boss gets told to fill out an application polite way of being told to freak off holy crap dude good on you seriously this kid doesn't realize how lucky he is that you stood up to his mom for him and basically forced her to back off my best friend and first grade was not allowed to come to school on Halloween we all dressed up and had a little parade her mother claimed it was a devil's birthday it was a private religious school it's also my birthday I work with kids at the YMCA we have a place called Kid Zone where parents can drop their kids off and we watch them while they work out we get this five-year-old pretty often and his dad as a little scary one of the bodybuilder bearded type guys the kid was here one day and he was sitting and coloring and the dad was walking in the hallway saw him through our window and stormed inside yelling at him to get up and play basketball we have one of those electronic net games in the room but the kid was freaking coloring and he already was playing basketball for a long time before the dad came in the room became eerily silent after that pretty embarrassing ugh I don't know what's worse helicopter parents are overly enthusiastic sports are the only thing that matter parents mine they joined a cult before I was born which prohibited watching TV or any sort of interaction with the outside world my childhood was not too fun for those who care the cult was a very very obscure offshoot of Christianity probably mostly akin to Southern Baptist in practice but much more strict there was the speaking in tongues and all of that a man named Sam Fife started this organization which goes by the name of the move of the move of God he believed that the end times were imminent and encouraged his followers to go off into the wilderness and build communes to wait for Jesus return in five years 40 plus years later they're still going the move prohibits anything that has to do with the world as they call it modern haircuts TV pants women and even dating young adults are encouraged to walk out a year in the Lord with a potential partner in which time they get to know each other a six-inch rule is enforced meaning the couple must remain six inches from each other at all times until marriage to prevent lustful demons from entering the couple other charming practices of the move include beating children and forced exorcisms I wish I was fricking making this crap up but I am NOT as far as I know you can giggle the basic facts of the move including that Sam died I think in 1979 and buddy Cobb took over my childhood was really freaked up but I am mostly over it feel free to ask any questions if you so wish one of my friends in high school was from an incredibly wealthy family and his parents traveled on most weekend so they would get him a babba sister while they were gone she wasn't a maid she didn't cook she didn't clean she didn't drive him around she would just be there in the house on her phone I never saw him talk to her for more than he had to cause I think he thought it was strange since he was a senior with a car and a job and she was only a year older than him not that ridiculous but I thought it was funny I had a friend who didn't learn how to use a toaster or microwave until she was 14 her parents literally did everything for her and to this day she's 17 now she still doesn't know how to do her own laundry I met a few people who didn't know how to do their own laundry freshman year of college it beats me how parents can send their kids to live on their own without teaching them basic life skills I remember this kid on my street wasn't allowed to hang out with me because I let him play Duke Nukem on n64 I still wonder how exactly he described the game to his parents in middle school I had an online account on a website and also for a Kuenn today I am very often we had moved out of state and I've made no friends yet neighborhood was in the early stages and school hadn't started yet my stepmom read every single conversation when I went to visit friends back home and decided to print out a bunch of my things and added handwritten notes about myself on the pages on the drive home from my visit she told me an officer pulled a guy over in a neighboring state and had found that info packet on me in his back seeds and contacted her because he was coming to kidnap me I obviously know better now as she didn't even change her handwriting but that was really flicked up I was a good kid and always stayed out of trouble I'd call and check in when asked I was just depressed about the move and needed an outlet as a parent myself now I'm grossed out by that entire incident my mom similarly took my notebook and used post-it notes to make handwritten notations she then handed it to a therapist I was 11 and experimenting with being a rebel and joking about getting stoned on like sugar and those fruit smelling markers ugh they came into school to coach their child alongside of the sports teacher during cricket practice and of course they got their own net to bat in in all honesty I felt bad for the kid he was already quite a shy dude and having your dad come in specifically to help you with a sport only puts more pressure on you probably minors of right now I'm 17 and can't visit a friend's house unless one of my grandparents who I live with has met said friends parents they refused to let me apply for part-time jobs in a town 20 minutes away I go to school in that town I'm not allowed to have anyone ride in the car with me I can't get specific styles of haircuts I have to ask for money to get clothes that fit me properly and I run a style I enjoy I'm not allowed to drive past 6:00 p.m. I've been stalked to a friend's house caught them driving by to see if I was going where I said I was lot of stuff such as that those grandparents really have a lot of time on their hands I asked my friend to spend the night and his parents said no you're too old for sleepovers we were in fourth grade my best friend's mom got rid of her Legos when she was 10 on that same claim of her being too old a really sweet girl in my year at school wasn't allowed to come to Starbucks with my friends and I after school because it was allegedly too late and too dangerous the Starbucks was in an upscale densely populated area of town it was 5:30 p.m. and we were 15 I couldn't hang with friends after school - well it was because I lived 15 miles away and parents were working so they couldn't pick me up from a friend's house my next-door neighbours parents had signs around the house by the door and phones that gave specific instructions on what to do or say to a stranger who called or rang the doorbell if the parents weren't home one time we were having my birthday party maybe 10 and it was cop themed what I wanted to be growing up my local police department agreed to hostess for a tour of the station and to look at the squad cars this was clearly printed on the invitations same neighbor had to ask his parents permission to go to with us they came over to look around the party and see what kind of characters were there they also drove their son to the station in their own car did not offer rides to any other child station was maybe a one-stroke two miles from my house he was my childhood best friend but we went our separate ways last time you his sister who I graduated high school with left for DC and got into politics he dropped out of high school private school private Christian school and vocational school he spent seven years in high school before flunking out he is a pale Irish ginger kid who thinks he's ghetto and black he shaves his head got two two sleeves off pin-up girls on his arms idk where he got them but if those happened on him master the artist would be gone smokes cigarettes and doesn't want his GERD the one time I chatted with him when I came home from college he complained about how difficult it is to get a job without a degree and bitched out an elderly neighbor who only gave him $20 to clean out her basement I feel bad for him cause I definitely growing up in that house flicked him up last I heard he still lives with his parents constantly selling his stuff up to to money and works as a dishwasher somewhere context overbearing mom has two sons the first one came out as gay which horrified her after this she became obsessed with making sure her second son wouldn't come out because she had forbidden the eldest son from doing anything that involved girls she thought maybe that was why he turned gay I don't think she grasp the concept of you don't choose your orientation for her second son she decided that she had to make him do things with girls so she pulled up the name of a girl that he had once had a crush on years ago went to the girl's mom and asked demanded that the girl go to prom with her son the girl's mom agreed keep in mind that neither kid expressed interest in each other nonetheless overbearing mom made her son make posters and bought flowers for him to use in the ask all two days before the actual event I'd love to say they had a great time but I heard from one of the other couples that it wasn't fun and I think the girl found out eventually that her prom date wasn't really into her but just pushed into asking her because his mom wanted him to have more contact with girls with a similar story my grandfather is looking on sketchy Craigslist personal ads for my divorced father I wasn't allowed to spend time with friends outside of school I remember the one time they relented after a week off begging thst they let me go see a movie at a theater that's less than five minutes away with my most responsible friend with the GPS tracker on my phone immediately after I had to call them to pick me up and they wonder why I turned out so socially awkward the mom of a girl I went to middle school with would come to lunch to see what table her daughter was sitting at if she was with the less popular girls she would walk her over to the popular table and asked to make room for her when we got to high school she volunteered in the office a couple times a week that would come out of the cafeteria at lunch hour to check where she was sitting that is a really good way to make sure the kid isn't popular my brother is 32 years old he works for my parents eats lunch and dinner with them and my mother cleans his house once a week she takes unhealthy food away from him and throws it in the garbage she signs him up for dating websites she is diabetic and tests his blood sugar for fun he is not diabetic he had a girlfriend in his 20s when I asked how they were getting on he said well mom likes her and when I say works for my parents they are wealthy and retired he mows their lawn and shovels their sidewalks when they yell at him he physically starts shaking when I suggested that he get into therapy my mother said and I quote no way the therapist would tell him to get away from us child abuse doesn't necessarily stop when you are an adult I'm 32 and can't imagine this I have great parents though oh man my dad prided himself on being a hovercraft parent just a few leaps above your typical helicopter parent for example he would track my phone once I was in a movie theater and he set off the find your iphone in the middle of the movie he was a great dad just a little extra that's what you get for not turning off your phone at the movies you monster my best friend and his brother shared the same room throughout childhood and puberty they were well-behaved teenagers but their mom was always concerned about drugs and freaking so while they were sleeping she would smell the shirts and pants they wore through the day and if she detected a small trace of tobacco or beer ona she would literally kick their asses before even asking for an explanation so one day the mother is checking the older son's sneakers and she found as a tiny packet Oh Lord she beated the heck out of this poor guy using a broom one my best friend woke because of all the noise and screaming the mother broke the broom wall hitting his teen child's back at the end she yelled at him that none of her children would become a drug addict and through the packet in front of the two puzzled teens it was a silica gel packet he forgot to throw away before using his new sneakers for the first time their mom didn't understood English we have one television in the dining room of the restaurant I work in we don't have any premium channels nothing like Showtime HBO or P well there was a group of college boys watching a horror movie because they were the first ones to come in and get the remote a woman comes in with a group of five teenage boys she demanded that the channel be changed because her boys weren't allowed to watch anything of that nature when I was a kid I'd be watching The Simpsons and would laugh at the jokes I could understand at the time my friends next door weren't allowed to watch spongebob since it was too graphic their dad was cool but mom was a total psycho I remember she screamed at her kids to get inside the house to go to bed since they were up way too late it was 701 they had to be in bed by 7 o'clock when my daughter was 8 9 years old she had a friend Kate at school she wanted to bring home after school for a playdate and tea sure no problem my daughter comes home with a note asking if Kate's mum can have an email address so she can get in touch I give my old Yahoo spam address sure enough the next day I get this huge email giving us a list of things that Kate can can't do no television no playing in the garden if it's sunny no chocolate no cake no access to the Internet on our computers she can only drink water with her food no fizzy drinks and on and on it went now it didn't mention pets for some odd reason we had a spaniel at the time who was the gentlest dog ever when we walked in the door with Kate she instantly fell in love with the dog we went for a walk in the woods with the dog Kate holding her led when we got back all she wanted to do was play with the dog so they were all out in the garden for ages the girls throwing a ball between them with the dog going mat trying to get it when they came in for a drink Kate sat on the floor with the dog laying her head in her lap anyway mum comes to pick her up and the girls are now back in the garden sitting on a blanket playing with dolls the dog is also involved getting her hair brushed or cuddled mum freaks out you'd think she walked into to find the lifeless corpse of her daughter being devoured by Rottweiler but she actually saw her daughter trying to put a tiara on the dog whilst getting her face licked and laughing her head off mum grabs Kate whilst shrieking at us about how irresponsible we were and what were we thinking she left still shrieking at us despite Kate crying and saying she loved the dog and she was fine the next day mum turns up at the door and demands to see the dogs vaccine records and wanted to know who our vet was so she could check what might be wrong with the dog she stated that she couldn't believe we'd expose our own child to a dog let alone someone else's she was taking Kate to the doctor and he would need this information shego told to go away the same day we got a letter unstamped from a solicitor demanding the dog's medical records and any details that related illnesses we might have had the solicitor was mum I checked the details of the company and it didn't exist she got a letter from a real solicitor mine ordering her not contact us in any way shape or form illegal action would commence a week later she removed Kate from the school presumably she found one that didn't take kids whose parents owned dogs friend in college was driving with me at like 4:00 a.m. and his dad called him asking him where he was he didn't live with his parents or anything but his dad had his phone tracked and saw that he wasn't in his dorm gee dad since he are tracking me with GPS you probably have a better idea of where I am than I do my friend is 22 years old lives on her own has a job etc she recently bought herself a car and her parents don't allow her to drive it and less one of them is in it with her guiding her and telling her what to do despite the fact she has passed her driving test it has to stay at their house meaning she has to get a lift to work with a co-worker and her dad drives it to his work most days instead of his own car because he
