We Treat a Fan to a Total Kitchen Makeover!

hello MacCready weirdos in today's episode of what's my aesthetic we're helping longtime viewer Karolina who's in desperate need of our help to complete her stalled kitchen project she's lived in her unfinished home for over a year and hasn't been able to afford to complete her kitchen we shot this while I was pregnant are you feeling tired so I'm gonna take it kind of easy while Joey does a major heavy lifting and I'll get creative with some DIYs Oh we're gonna give her all new appliances that's it so with the help of our sponsor Lowe's will diagnose her style and create a Pinder's worthy kitchen reveal so that Karolina can finally enjoy her beautiful huh [Applause] mr. Cate I am a second generation American my parents both came from Argentina when they're very young and they didn't have a lot to give me growing up they were very severely hurt by the 2008 market crash and all of that so I started working at 17 and has been saving for my own place ever since because there wasn't a lot of stability so now I finally have settled into my own place took a lot of hard work and I'm very very proud but it's a little bit of a fixer-upper and all my money went into just securing a home which is great but now I just need a little bit of help with some areas of the house that needs some improving thank you so much for the opportunity and we'll see what happens Thanks you're outside Karolina condo and we are about to go meet her and see her speak Oh [Music] [Music] yes I took it over I bought it from them and I pretty much just painted everything so you have no recess in here these are actually pretty new there used to be cabinets all up on here and yeah I took them out so your job is to put that all the way around yeah talk to me about the spacing here and this is kind of a weird placement you decided why did you decide to put the fridge here obviously your stove is older is this annoying that you don't pulls on these I guess not they have little ledges do you like that finish you're a creative weirdo right have you ever taken out what's my aesthetic please my chance yeah as my main result are you pretty much just a neutral kind again I like to light wood tones pretty like plants I want more plants pretty much neutral neutral yeah and what about the ceiling fan I was gonna change this out just to fix shirt well good to know that I went to team yesterday just yeah hi Carolyn [Applause] [Music] we are back at Carolina's home and we have kicked her out for the day because you guys know we like to surprise everybody I think that this project is gonna take us two days though because we are getting her all-new appliances which we were going to order today and she needs it because her refrigerator is way too big for the space but also the freezer doesn't work her stove and oven hood are like an unfinished thought she doesn't even have a finished oven hood and then her dishwasher is a cavernous hole which all those things are gonna make a huge difference in her space and it's so great that we're working with Lowe's because we can get all of those things plus everything else we need to transform the space for her and do it within the two days that we have kicked her out for so let's talk about Carolina's aesthetic so I chatted with her I got to know her as you guys saw I also looked at some of her inspiration images she loves those super neutral spaces she also likes plants and she also likes the element of like wicker and rattan and jute you know this really natural tone so taking a cue from that I am definitely gonna diagnose her with a whopping 70% minimalist is our first 70% minimalist space we've done we're definitely gonna be able to achieve that with what she's already started doing in her speech go to weight table she's got all the white paint going on in her kitchen the white countertops everything like that we're just gonna finish the thought for her and really finish and make this space beautiful and because she likes plants and the element of like wicker and jute and those natural tones I'm getting her 20% bohemian and also you can see on this bookshelf here she has chosen to display some sort of eclectic item so I'm gonna finish off her diagnosis with 10% vintage eclectic so final diagnosis 70% minimalist 20% bohemian and 10% vintage of eclectic so I think using that diagnosis we are set up with a good plan a good map to achieve a design that she'll love in this kitchen and dining area and obviously make it that much more functional for her in the kitchen with all those new appliances so that's the plan let me go talk to Joey and let's figure out like what exactly our whole shopping list is going to be a kiss okay okay so I have diagnosed are you feeling tired I'll do all the work you can sit down no I have a DIY project I can do but I can do some of it sitting okay if you can sand these cabinets down that would be a big help because I don't necessarily want to be in dust world yeah I've diagnosed her at 70% minimalist 20% bohemian and 10% vintage eclectic yet so she's like screaming minimalist which you can kind of see what the choices that she made in here I think we finished this thought for her since she bought the shelves her over there too and just never put them off the first thing that strikes me is that a her fridge is big it's small but deep like me right now yeah counter-depth fridge so there are counter depth refrigerators which is like so awesome in a space like this because as you can see this one sticks out so far it really kind of closes in on this entryway well the other thing is her placement of the fridge over there makes no sense I know because she does this here on the wall this is the opposite of her vibe all of this exposed pantry stuff so yeah if we can do a counter downer page and then some kind of pantry over there to almost sort of mimic this counter that's gone up here we may be go all the way up to the ceiling with a pantry I want to paint out these base cabinets like a light gray okay there's a lot of white going on up here I think if we've ground it with just a slightly darker shade it's funny that she's lived here for a year and obviously whoever owned this place before her had a dishwasher like she's using that for like storage again not minimalist I know obviously this is not nice fugly we should do one of those like more like chevy hoods more like but you know like what get one of those like stainless steel yeah like one of the TP okay well we should shop and you should show me what you're thinking okay I think we should pick up maybe some new chairs for her dining room and maybe a new light fixture because she said she want to get rid of that fan which I was happy about okay all right so here's the good thing this is actually really cool yeah is that Lowe's if they have the items in stock which you can check on the website yeah deliver them the next day for appliances yeah we wouldn't be able to pull off kitchen transformation in two days without that so no over here what I'm thinking is this shelving unit is in pretty good shape but I don't want to have like all of these high horizontal lines since I'd rather at the kitchen have those going on so I'm thinking maybe we can turn this on its side because this is the one like a vintage eclectic thing she has in her space even though she's a minimalist to display some of these like vintage teapot the other little sort of trinkets so I want to make sure there's a place for that still but then above it she has the sort of saddest herb garden I've seen in a while so I think that we take a cue from that because she does love plants which is why I gave her 20 percent bohemian and do like some kind of like installation of an herb garden here because it does get great light okay so let's look at the appliance its first because those are like the biggest change or making in the kitchen right so let's start with a counter depth refrigerator I'm gonna check available for pickup just I can see if it's in stock we should do like something like this fridge counter depth oh and it has the ice machine and the water thing yeah which we use all the time on ours okay yeah that's the car major bonus Oh Holloway my old appliance for me sure yes that freezer is actually broken so this is perfect oh my gosh yay we need a douve we want a gas range because she has a gas range there this one I think looks like that don't you Manton let's see what kind of stove hoods that have I'm excited about this yeah this is where like the design comes in especially because that's gonna be the centerpiece of that back wall that's it that's so minimal is five and then we just want a dishwasher and let's do stainless steel so that all is matching sounds nice and minimal streamlines okay so then that we just need to get paint paint I want new chairs for here Oh chairs right these these oh yeah those are cool Arnie's so gorgeous like I love how sculptural that is that's totally like the minimalist vibe because she really does like that presence of all the natural tones so that's a set of two so two of those two cards all right well you keep shopping I'm gonna go get started on the cabinet's because I have a lot to do you toss me know I'm gonna find out I'm gonna finally all right what are you getting started on cabinets oh then yeah Joey gets started on the cabinet's whoa [Music] [Applause] [Music] alright guys so we're gonna do a built-in pantry and it's gonna go next to the new counter-depth fridge one of the reasons we're doing a built-in is because we're keeping her existing cabinetry that her base counts are we're gonna paint this white well paint her cabinets gray so the I will forgive the fact that some of the molding trim doesn't match really quickly just so you can see what we're gonna do we're basically just gonna build a box that's gonna go floor-to-ceiling we have a 2 4 by 8 split in half that gives us 4 sheets of 24 inch by 8 foot why would our sides and our backs will be 24 inches our shells will be 24 inches wide first things first I got to build the frame so that we can get an installer [Music] ah this smells so good you guys fasal oh my gosh obviously I have in front of me eight gorgeous array of alive herbs ok so let's go over the supplies that I'm gonna use for this wall installation we wearing my dowels oh thank you remember we're keeping everything super neutral super minimal and then we also got these silver curtain rod brackets so the idea here is to use the curtain rod bracket the wood dowel and do a row of these along this wall so maybe three or four depending on you know how they're fitting and everything and then we will have the plants in these awesome galvanized buckets and they've got this handle here so there's two options we could either use an s hook like this and hang it like this with the plant inside and the other option is actually taking the handle off the bucket right so just using a little pliers to pry that open taking this off because then we have these hooks right here that the s hook fits right into and then this on the dowel like so and obviously we'll replant the herbs and everything like that but I think that'll look really cool with I'm kind of like spilling out a little bit but making sure we weight down the bottom by putting a few pebbles which will help with drainage as well so that's a plan with this it's you know fairly straightforward supplies wise it's just a matter of like making sure we space out the dolls right we've got the right mix of plants and all of that and then she waters them which I will go over with her no I know she's a plant lover I really do think that she'll be able to keep them alive and also she said the other reason they weren't doing too well right here on the windowsill is because her dog was like knocking them over and sniffing in them and stuff like that so this way they'll be up above this bookshelf so dog friendly herb garden wall minimalist insulation [Music] you [Music] look at this grass cloth pantry so this will be all for her food like no more exposed chip bags and all that clutter she had before and then down here she can have that trash can and her recycling stuff that she used to have in the dishwasher dishwasher GameChanger oh my god her parts already yeah peels the beauty ah oh we still gotta clean in there though we needed to us ok I need to clean it clean a lot we made a mess ok so uh I see a couple things on this yeah I'm a new style curly parsley on the end your new life where you will flourish so that's of all you guys this is our new minimalist herb garden wall rather than art we're doing natural items which is very much in line with Carolina's aesthetic so planted the different herbs put it little signs and them handwritten signs she knows which ones cuz some of them will need a little bit more water than others but what I've done is up here are succulents which those only need to be watered like once a month ish so she can just get her little stepladder step stool once a month and get those but then now on this second row and the bottom row the more accessible for us smalls although Karolina is taller than I am these are all the herbs that need a little bit more they're a little more high mean and they need water like once twice a week depending on the herb but they're all gonna be getting sunlight from this awesome window here and door over there so [Music] all right so this turned out so well I'm so obsessed with this and obviously look at how awesome this is too this was her bookshelf that was once vertical Joey just quickly who made it a horizontal piece and this is just now like a really rad sideboard and totally in line with her minimalist aesthetic like keeping the back open so I'm gonna style this with some of her vintage eclectic items that she already had on it before and yeah pretty close to being done [Music] Oh Oh my stainless steel this is such a big difference in here okay so let's just talk about the big stuff and admire and soak it in this is such an upgrade because she had just an exposed yes before the fridge looks so much better and you know what I love about this with these doors French doors the door swing is so much smaller and it just makes it that much easier to move around in here like crazy and the freezer works she's got the ice and water she can have cubed or crushed ice she has this beautiful new stove with five burners I know that's so cool there's one in the middle of dishwasher dishwasher GameChanger it was a cavernous hole before and then obviously we finished the thought for her with the shelving but then this I love this detail with the grass cloth wallpaper what's cool about this is that we didn't try to match it to the cabinet's we like very purposely mean it it's like oh yeah because the whole thing with the minimalist in here like obviously I still have to style the shelves and expose shelves can look kind of cluttered unless you keep them a really neat but that's why you need like cabinets with doors and storage like this to keep it looking like a minimalist design I love this DIY I was like one of those incorrect I know the herb garden of minimalist dreams I mean this light fixture yeah she had the ceiling fan before which she doesn't need it was super dusty and nasty so dusty nasty also she has central a/c and she wanted to do a fixture this is like so minimalist I love like the lines of the very sculptural it kind of distracts from like the card of she's stealing honestly though this might be my favorite thing in this room these chairs it's like an s-shape kind of very sculptural but still very minimalist and clean she definitely likes a little bit of those like natural textures and also the greenery of the plants but then I love it we just paired it with her super simple pedestal table so we saved money that way we save money by making this into a horizontal yeah this turned out cool I love it and I love how like the shelves are kind of offset like we have these so orderly so if this was like an actual crisscross it would've looked like too structured yeah because in minimalism you're playing with subtlety right like you have to take advantage of those textures and shapes because you don't have like art and color too so obviously we're not doing a rug in here no rug in here I do have a little kitchen rug though very moment I don't know if I can I'll get the right cuddle today okay I'll do it y'all all supervise supervise run cuddle okay yeah okay go get the wrapper [Music] ooh stainless steel bulls very minimalist okay so finishing touches are obviously very key in this kitchen because all of these finishing touches are actual functional items that she needs like her pots and pans and all the cooking and eating accoutrement and I'm just gonna basically do what she already started doing in this space and arrange them really neatly and beautifully on these shelves obviously we now have these shelves up over here so that's added storage but the key and minimalist design especially when you have exposed shelving is just being very purposeful with what you're placing so if any of this stuff starts looking a little too busy or cluttered I'm gonna tuck it into one of the cabinet so let's talk with a small stuff in here the finishing touches in here okay so this is where we get a little complicated because she loves minimalism and super clean but then she also has that vintage eclectic element where she has you know these little tea sets and all the little things that she had displayed on this shelf so I'm gonna go back and display some of these on the shelf but I'm also gonna absolute storage baskets and stuff like that to just kind of corral maybe some of the book so it's not as like stacked up looking so I've got my styling work cut out for me let's do this [Music] [Applause] [Music] I love your cute minimalist outfit oh my gosh your pants are so cute okay so this is your first home that you've owned yes and it took so much to get this place either work so hard [Music] promises you got here and you were able to save up your money to get the place in the UK you couldn't wait you could put the extra love into it to finish it yeah so that's where we came in [Music] you you like the minimalist a little bit of bohemian with some natural textures and you had a little bit of your vintage eclectic in your beautiful display shelf yeah but this is your new kitchen so on the count of three one two three oh my god [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh my gosh beautiful I know oh my god the ugly fan is gone right we took your cue from your herb garden that's so much we obviously kept your bookcase but modified as yeah we need it horizontal [Music] let's be honest kitchens were sound let's go look at steel dishwasher and the fact that you have this like the French doors it doesn't take up as much wing when it opens yeah alright crushed ice for days Joey the crushed ice I'm a cubed ice but you know you have options yes oh my gosh and I have the matching shell exactly we finished yeah your instincts were good on the shell so you just use the other shells yet in this whole situation yes so now you have a cool like chef said right isn't it so good I know I know you're so pro you're gonna be cooking up a storm I love these I know aren't they pretty pretty actually mixed metals a bit cuz we have the stainless steel appliances but then the brass pulls and then I'm obsessed with this pantry for days so yeah I put your trash can that you had before in your oh yeah and then up here can be all for your food like just kind of chaos of storage right here right we also got to a counter-depth fridge so this is actually like four inches shorter than the other four you had so it just helps that combined with the French door shuts down so much on taking up space is that free normally we don't come with like thousands of dollars worth of appliances but sometimes thank you so much like we know what it's like being a homeowner and having a complete kitchen that you can enjoy because you use it so much it's
