Ultimate Garage Playroom Makeover! Our First Project As New Parents!

hello creative weirdos on today's episode we are going to attempt a really challenging makeover that doesn't look like a table to me with the help of our awesome sponsor Lowe's we're going to visit the Apple furred family who emailed us in need of some major design in their bagua space that they are currently trying to use of a playroom and homeschool room for their three-year-old son Ellis and their newborn Winnie the twist is that now we have our own kid oh okay Evan I have an angry moon but hey you can't grow if you aren't challenging yourself right or at least that's what they say well come along for this journey as we attempt to make something match let's go Joey what you ate all of my lactation cookies really Joey I just have to let you know that it says with ingredients mom brain firing what are we talking about the garage oh my gosh okay no Rancho Cucamonga garage all right so we are getting back in to ER our work is awesome we're not complaining but obviously you guys can have kids no it's a blissful time during the newborn phase our maternity leave around three months so we're just like trying to get back into things so those go and then I get back into making videos for you guys through like we really want to make sure that the families that we choose or people that we choose really need our help so there's also de sponsored by Lowe's which is submission videos for you guys and today we're going to be working with the Apple for a family we're the apple forth I'm Jenny and this is Kyle and the space we'd like for you guys to makeover is our garage aka our homeschool room our house is very small so we have to use all the space we have and this is not just a another space in our house this is the building blocks for our kids future and their education we are on a very tight budget so this would mean so much to us we're on one income kyle is a special education teacher with a passion for teaching and we just want to make a space that is so fun and creative and promotes their learning you know throughout many years and who better to do it than you guys to make our own creative weirdos [Music] we were cherish this through all of our homeschooling years and beyond thank you guys so much for this opportunity thank you okay we love that you love that family that your final challenge to make that space workable flavor and work from learning them all of that so we are going to do it we usually do set out drive to the house measure the room get to know the family what they want from the design also Julie did not input the address into the map until we got in the car and when you come to realize that it's like two hours away with traffic you like a baby in a car seat what's up guys this is our first video going out to all the lanes yeah post moon I've already got a lot of men drool on me this is Kate's party bag she packed for moving for the car trip motley fine texture bugs in here we bought like toys back forward both we bought rattles how come you don't pack one of these bags for me when we go places this looks like a lot of fun you ready to go sir let's do it all right we are off Joey's driving I've got mine here next to me I am entertaining him anything to entertain you and keep you happy for an hour and a half drive Hey all right so we got about ten minutes in to our journey and already stopped and a nurse moon could be started crying and we thought okay maybe he's hungry it was with this project we almost quit this project but yeah I have to buy nipple cream ah no use me okay update was an hour and a half later we are not going to go Scout today because moon is gotten fussy a couple of times and we're kind I'm thinking that this place might be a little bit too far to go to has a blue jay bird that we have to change we're gonna change his diaper we're gonna walk around give a change of scenery and I think head back home and try to figure out our lives and how to work with a baby this parenting stuff is next-level we did blow out cyber in the car seat we change a diaper in the car we're gonna literally get home like 9 p.m. tonight and have not gone anywhere Amy's having so much fun for you mood II thought was really funny actually we're sitting in the parking lot it's 100 degrees out and you could give a weird we didn't think this one do very well parenthood update so obviously we failed at going to that scout well I don't easier to fail yeah we feel we basically are learning as we go long story short we're not gonna give up on this project no we may not have been able to get there in person but hey it's a challenge so we're gonna face time though Ellis how old are you three oh my god this is mood I just turned three months this is a lucky opportunity for him cuz he doesn't normally get to look at FaceTime babies sort of in person yeah okay so in terms of the homes blowing stuff do you cool are you guys do it jointly we're gonna do it as a team and I'll do most of it like I'll be physically here but that Kyle will do like lesson signing with me and stuff through the weekend or nighttime who tell me how like lesson planning could be enhanced in a space well so far our table is like we had like a bigger table for us to sit at all as a family like if we're all doing art together all doing a lesson together right we don't really have any storage so homeschooling acts like group meetups and stuff like that okay would be nice to be able to like bring them over and say like here in total we have a bunch of materials and they give you like group cracks and not kind of I love that okay so we have these cabinets and they're just crammed with like crap stuff okay gotcha gotcha so of like plastic bins and stuff so what are those toys on the and the Florida it's just glittery toy stuff I don't know and then talk about the floor some of you could have like just regular concrete floor yeah it's just concrete so we just have these four area rugs that we got cover the floors gotcha okay and then show me tool world this is Tory oh is that a sensory board we're actually learning all this stuff with Ellis so we feel like it's fun yeah sort of angle but yeah you tend to do like the safer route with decorating because we're scared yes but we like everything basically you just want a space to be inviting you're gonna be in there every day we want Ellis to be excited to go in there and learn and then obviously be able to tidy it up and keep what's going on in the ceiling it's just rafters we have like Christmas up here on it like all the holiday stuff is on this side I like is there anything that you want to see on the fee your trip very cool that's a big one okay so you're you'd like some special place for your toys I would have Sam yeah yeah truck with your parking noted LSU like color you want like a lot of color in there okay let me ask about the couch so it is like a sofa or like that type of lounge seating important if we could have like a cozy little spot nice cuz that's usually where we do our story time oh oh why don't I question do you guys need like a whiteboard or blackboard or anything like that okay amazing guys we are very inspired by your story we think you're super cool family and excited to help oh she's so cute thanks so much guys okay see you later okay thank you technology for allowing us to meet and get to know that over family this is great I'm so excited to pull that room together for them I think it's a really fun challenge to take a garage and make it like an accessible playroom workroom learning room they are going to be spending like five days a week in that room so this room has to be amazing only catches because it's so far away I feel like it is just not fair to make moon commute there and it's do this install so I am going to be doing it from home designing shopping online etc and Joey is going to be going to the location to implement install everything while loon and I boss him around over FaceTime oh and I want to do an epic built in on that back wall with colorful okay so I couldn't find it mommy's gonna draw it okay so I'll just sketch both things on this because this is like giant paper so think since the garage door opens and they usually have it open I think we do a big built-in along the whole back wall of the garage since they need storage they want bookshelves [Laughter] the story of the built-in dory the built-in here's the back wall of the garage basically Florida ceiling built in half of it have base cabinet so that they have like a counter top and then above it is bookshelf shelving and then we can paint inside different colors so it's kind of like a fun like colorful patchwork as like the garage door opens along the whole back wall I want to be able to give them a big table to like do projects on homework whatever and also give them cozy seating so I think to like lounge chairs I could go here is really enjoying watching you draw yeah that's good when you're gonna be able to draw so soon as soon as you can figure out how to work your hands and then I think I'll do a DIY piece of art for right here so while you're at their house like building this and I'll be at home with moon and while you're napping or maybe even while you're awake how can we are you in a carrier I'll do a DIY piece of art for right here I think we do like some like comfy like rubber mat flooring you know but they have one that looks like wood so like that'll be such a full transformation right oh I think we paint this whole wall here whiteboard and so then oh no other piece of wall there I think we do some kind of cool like table that combines grown-up height with kid height so like half of the table is like a kind of funky shape versus like versus round okay well that doesn't look like a table to me just something that's like an interesting shape that combines like adult higher don't height and then kid height but have it actually be connected you know so the top of it like it's this OH he says gonna go back to plane are you too hot in your heart ready oh so beautiful baby look at that beautiful here okay it's playtime okay yeah oh no no yeah we're gonna take a nap um go go think a little bit more on that table Oh give me the baby okay so I am going to do some shopping for this project obviously we need a good amount of stuff we need kids chairs we need adult chairs we need like some reading nook e-type chairs lots of chairs so I'm gonna shop all this unload comic on my computer I'm just going to like browse around here with you guys start with some kids chairs oh my gosh little red chairs remember Ella super colours rad we got to make sure we're working that in because he is our most important client let's be honest okay next up I want to do orange dining chairs because I want to make sure that we have with all the colors I'm thinking kind of like a primary color palette in there oh my gosh I am obsessed with these nice and simple they look like it'll be easy to wipe down and clean which is good Moonie okay I gotta shop quickly all right adding those to cart set of two so we'll need like four those and now let's look for some lounge chairs club chairs because I'm thinking instead of like a sofa in there we don't only have room for a sofa to comfy reading chairs for like almost like a little reading corner over by the built-in so club chairs let's see what comes up oh my gosh lots of options I'm thinking maybe something patterns oh whoa look at these striped ones these look nice and big to these we will do two of these Add to Cart so obviously this is where we're spending some of our budget right we're saving budget saving by doing all the DIY with the built-in doing a DIY with just the entire white word wall like basically we're just doing whiteboard paint as opposed to find like a ton of whiteboards to put all over the wall so those are our budget seating moments in this room bean bag chair okay so we have like the table let succeeding but I also want to do a rug with some beanbag chairs because these kids are a little like their little little it's you know preschool age or they like to sit on the floor and play with toys so we want to give them a cozy spot to do that and who doesn't love me back here ooh what about another little patterned moment with this green polka dot beanbag chair let's do one of those and let's do a pink one adding to cart okay so obviously lighting is really important to me it will be very important in this room because this is a classroom so it needs to be nice and bright and light you know be teaching during the day but you know during the winter might get dusk dusk in there while they're still working so let's do and sensor sconce lighting I think maybe something with a shade so that it reads like a lamp but it's on the wall cuz we I want to put it over by the to reading chairs that's kind of like a reading nook but rather than having a table lamp cluttering up the floor space let's do a wall man oh my gosh I love this one this is like a polished nickel swingarm which is great so they can you know swivel it around this is smart lighting so there's no switch which is great with a wall sconce because sometimes it's complicated if like the switches down lower on the cord but it's not really easy to get to so this you just touch it to turn it on let's talk about flooring in there because we want to give them something like cushiony underfoot but also something that's flexible cuz it is a garage if they ever do need to convert that back into a garage we don't want to lay permanent flooring so there is this amazing floor covering that I saw yeah I'm in loves it too it's amazing so this will look so good it'll basically have like the look of wood but the feeling of a nice foam cushy floor underneath their feet they can be out there barefoot the kids can sit on it roll around on it clay on it this will be so conducive to a play yeah last but not least we are going to do some track lighting in there because on the ceiling they have a fluorescent light which just those are never okay so I think a track light is a great option there because we'll be able to get multiple sources of light shining in different areas of the room foot only need that one wiring hookup so we don't need to like get complicated with adding extra electrical oh I like this one so this one is like the brushed nickel detail which we're doing in the wall sconce as well but you know what let's get two of these because that's what's cool with track lighting is you can put multiple together to have that many more bulbs so to add to cart' ok Lowe's thank you so much it's been a pleasure working with you I've ordered all this stuff Joey's on his way to the store to get the DIY supplies and we are gonna get this project done because we are good morning guys it is early in the morning they're still doing the windows the Sun just came up I'm gonna make the trek to Rancho Cucamonga we're gonna get this installed done high five high five [Music] what's up guys we made it we're at the Apple Ford's house come on in let's talk through this project so it's a garage right it's pretty raw they have these open rafters they are using them for some storage up there normally you would probably finish this ceiling with drywall we're in a rush we don't have time to seam and dry and do all the things you got to do with drywall so we're doing beadboard so you just get it in a big 4 by 8 piece and it's got a bunch of faux tongue-and-groove planks on it so obviously we are gonna paint the walls we've already started putting on a coat of the Valspar simplicity which is that 0 vo C paint that we love on this back wall we're gonna do this giant built-in but we're gonna have half of it be a workable countertop so it's gonna be like countertop shop area over here reading area over here and then right here we're gonna have an epic DIY table that I have no idea how I'm altima gonna do it so I feel like that's a good thing that we should go do right now I'm not by myself our our team is here so we're gonna knock this out we leave a couple days there's a lot to do let's work on that table [Music] [Music] hey how are you I got a question for you so for the table you want the adult section to be bigger than the kid section four feet wide alright I'm gonna try it I I'm just making this up as I go so we'll see but as far as the shape you just want kind of like whatever your regular okay turn out the phone I'm gonna get loud and use my saw bye okay let's see here I have two pieces of plywood I'm gonna use one piece for the base for the table the other piece for the top of the table but it's gonna be a multi-level table right so you're gonna have the higher level about 30 inches for the adults and then the lower level about 18 inches for the kids this is the long horizontal base piece and I'm gonna make another sort of perpendicular piece that's gonna fit right into this notch then the tabletops are gonna go on top never done this before who knows [Music] all right guys so I'm using the Dremel multi-max tool I love this thing it's the MM 50 the reason I like is because if you've ever used a multi-tool like this they usually have like those Allen wrenches and they're usually underpowered this is a really cool plug-in model and it just has this little dial that you can screw and you can attach your various endings so I'm gonna use it today to just finish cutting out this notch and basically just works by vibrating which is really cool too so as you can see I got my notch cut out now so this is where my perpendicular piece is gonna go I'm starting to think this is gonna work all right Joey is off my dad actually just got here to spring me so he's sitting with me and playing with him and I am going to take the opportunity to start on the artwork for the garage okay I have set up my easel here it's also known as our bookshelf I also have some paint chips here from Lowe's so that I could pick the colors for the built in I want to do like blocks of color within the shelves okay so my thought process with this canvas is I want to do something plant oriented because I did hear that the Apple Ford family they are vegan and that's something that's really important to them and something they're going to teach their children etc so I thought some sort of plant inspired or maybe vegetable inspired artwork I'm gonna use pencil first to sketch it out and then I'm going to use acrylic paint on top of this with canvas so um here moon yelling in the other room he's with my dad I think he needs his diaper changed I don't know if my dad knows how to do that okay so I'm gonna go change moon diaper and then I'm going to paint [Music] [Applause] all right update on the built-in it is coming along really well we're doing the same thing that we did it over at Chinese place with her built-in we also do this in our nursery cause at our house but all you gotta do is you get this three quarter inch primed pine that they sell at Lowe's you just like basically make your vertical pieces and then we're just attaching the shelves with screws and then really you can make any shape you want and then on the top we're doing a face over this they have this sort of ductwork here I think they're running electrical maybe some plumbing in it so we're covering that with a face piece and check out this okay so we've got our base cabinets with our counter top so this is gonna be their workbench we're gonna put the pegboard in here they'll have all their tools up on the ceiling we've installed this beadboard which is just a really cool way to cover these rafters without having to drywall and then to top it off they have that fluorescent light down the center so we're adding in this awesome tract lighting from Lithonia so we'll have some of the lights pointed on the built in this is gonna be the Reading area right here we have some pointing on the work area and then we'll have this wall which you can't tell right now but that wall is now painted with whiteboard paint so they're gonna be able to go to town just drawing all over this and then the desk that we're building is gonna go right here and then the last piece which I'm so excited about is gonna be the foam flooring that we're putting in [Music] I just need to polish the notches a little bit more make them just slightly wider cuz obviously getting stuff right here but this is gonna go flush to the ground and then this piece I'm gonna cut to match this height guys you just have to wait to the reveal to find out if they this this plan will work or not so nobody's working on all the big build stuff at the add row for his house it's looking amazing and I am here at home team karat moon while simultaneously trying to create a painting for them that will be meaningful in that room something that I can also have my hands on welding at home to be stay-at-home mom slash working long [Music] all right I just finished this artwork in record time because Lewin is sleeping but I'm pretty happy with it good morning guys the Sun is rising it is a big day because it is reveal day oh my gosh it's reveal day and I'm not you have a moons glad that he doesn't have to go yeah he's been napping a lot he's a growing boy so he's gonna be eating and napping with me today oh thank Betty Bo's yeah you get hikky Joey but I am still so I'm having a lot of anxiety with the styling so you have to FaceTime you later there okay cuz those shelves need to be styled to perfect please the mail Martha Stewart okay will vase I mean her styling yeah of course and then he will talk to you and it looks so cool it's a family of four and then I know that they like to remember their one pregnancy that they lost oh I get a little butterfly oh yeah that's so sweet Kate but yeah yeah I gotta get going okay I got a long drive ahead of me reveal Keith's gonna stay here with moon and they're gonna get work done on the other two videos that we're shooting right now it's gonna be big project we're doing in here is dealing with the flooring so the floors are concrete so their solution was they just had this thin underlayment down so probably my favorite thing about this project we're getting rid of these we're bringing in these foam mats so these are from great mats I've been waiting for a reason to use these because these are foam mats with patterns printed on them so obviously this is a wood grain this particular brand is non-toxic lead-free latex free so it's perfect for like a playroom so there I love these as they come with these edge pieces and you can pretty much install these in any shape room you just build the floor goes on in minutes and anywhere you need to trim trim super easily with the box cutter [Music] sad day solo rug cuddle [Music] [Music] I'm that's not good we're good in that game look at this so they have this pig that I feel like they probably cut out during them they're like Kraft moments I feel like the kids toolkit like there and then the pig on the wall yeah the pig is you let me see if I can get you so you can see what I'm talking about so like maybe the pigs here this tool things here sensory boards here okay cool yeah that'll meet you okay so this area ooh this is like an advanced styling situation you let me take a picture and you can draw on it [Music] [Music] [Music] hey hey I'm eating lunch holding man I gotta over maybe kids down here it's so cool right perfect for crass tons of storage drawers Eisley this back wall it had that weird ductwork up there that we hid we wanted to make a functional colorful fun so we got you some cozy seating there with the little lamb you can hang out on the floor obviously the whole floor now is like it's like you can draw all over this wall it's all dry erase markers what do you think about your beanbags huh I think hanging out on beanbag is that cool yeah you can sit down on your beanbag if you want did you notice the floor okay so Kate painted that at home because she wanted to do something alright I think we should call hate cuz honestly I just sweat she designs okay this is all her so hi oh good I'm so glad yeah we can't believe it oh I painted that the like family of cactuses for you and I made sure to include a little butterfly cuz I know you guys like to have your little angel baby representing you so much that's so thoughtful I love it that's so sweet oh okay even angry man thank you you know baby's nappy my queen all right you know what I think I'm gonna leave you guys I've sweated enough and this campus the same thank you so much thank you so project because I can't do these things without mommy with me oh no like I literally just can't do I think that room turned out really cool considering the circumstances that was one of the most weird videos you ever put together just the real-life scenario that we're going through like okay how do we be working parents and still be very present with this guy so I know a lot of you guys out there know what that's like good but they loved it and it's like a colorful amazing space for them to spend all the time in yeah huge thanks to Lowe's we couldn't have done it without them obviously you can
