it is indeed a rivalry for the ages [Music] to call them great would be an understatement today - quarterback really you really need to hear all this the big announcer the big Music Hall the big hype - you ready for this one come on now no one needs to tell you what this about what this means what this is but let me make sure you got the quick facts all right there we go you know they met 16 times before right you know they're saying this might be the last time right even though they said it before and of course you know the winner goes to Super Bowl 50 which will probably be the most watched event in television history but let me just tell you one more thing this is Brady and man Brady and man two greatest quarterbacks football is playing to prove football mortality you put on hold by sheer will banning going D 15 10 5 down no it's about the box right I played it gets both these guys there's nothing better the greatness going against Greeks imagine everyone this is enormous leave it just cue to music Tom Brady Peyton Manning this it's the AFC Championship game from Eddie George on Broadway to the Mile High City and Peyton Manning getting ready to take the field for the AFC championship game Tom Brady's already taken the field here trying to take the Patriots back to the Super Bowl it's a gorgeous day here in Denver approaching 50 sunny skies for New England and Denver with the winner to advance to Super Bowl 50 in two weeks time Arizona and Carolina coming up later today on Fox hello friends Jim Nantz along with the Super Bowl MVP quarterback Phil Simms one more time one more time we've seen it now to be the eighth time we watch Brady Manning there's a lot of excitement right around this game right now no question this rivalry it's been great if this is the last one what I say to you at home sit back and enjoy it's going to be great to show you some of the numbers a little deeper layer into the numbers if you will in the regular season decisive edge for Brady's won nine out of 12 matches but at the postseason the guy playing at home has won every time it's 2-2 in the last two matchups in the AFC title game Manning's side one we've done hundreds of games with these two players you know them well what's this rivalry like for them it's personal of course it is it always is between cornerback so just magnified because of these two what they have accomplished nothing craters in the window game against the cutter quarterback and walk out the midfield and go good game it's first loss of the season was here back on November the 29th but no Amendola no Edelman what's New England gonna look like today look we know they're gonna throw it over 40 times most likely it's about protecting Tom Brady they're smart they have a lot of ways to do over to Evan Washburn well Tracy the Patriots came into this game with 14 players listed as questionable all 14 are active and available but a group worth monitoring are the linebackers Jerrod Mayo was lost for the season last week and all three current starters were limited in practice most notably Jamie Collins who's managing a back injury Bill Belichick told us a game of this magnitude everyone's going to go the question is how long were they last Jim Evan Thank You Phil what do you expect out of the Denver defense today well when you look at the differed offense a couple things they've got to do number one you've got to find a way to make sure they know where Rob Gronkowski Julian Edelman are they're going to be all over the field covering them is going to be the most important thing for the Denver defense and how about the approach for the Broncos offense well the Broncos offense we saw it last week Peyton Manning he knows he has a Super Bowl defense he's going to be conservative not take chances and see if they can win it by being tough and doing the right thing well the winner of this Brady Manning showdown will just add to the legacy Phil you know you got Brady trying to continue the quest to do what no quarterback has ever done that's to win five Super Bowls he's tied with Bradshaw in Montana right now was for while Payton today if he's the winner here he would continue what is most likely his last chase for a championship and would give him the opportunity to do if these is in fact if he decides this is it a chance to go out as a winner like what we saw L will do and Benison Michael Strahan you all received which direction do you want to kick just the way they're set up New England is one of the trough and Hockley is the referee the the 40s getting ready now to find the first team headed to Santa Clara and the Super Bowl this game being broadcast in Spanish were available using the NSA people who bought your television back here for you Phil David right back in the 70s and 80s a lot of folks growing up watching the championship games and sunshine it's gonna be that way by the way at the start of the Super Bowl as well have to see that a long time well it sounds great and you know you look at this crowd everybody in orange this is about as close to a college atmosphere you can get with the pro football game so pretty cool to watch it than to be here unlikely to seem McManus is kicked returned but Patrick Chung and yes indeed of the begin with a touchback New England decides to take the football at the start after winning the toss thought Shabazz surprised a little bit but that gives Tom Brady maybe one more position Lin Denver well 10th time he stepped on the surface for an AFC title game the most championship Denver defense five away number one in the league this year first time in the history of the franchise that Denver's defense ever led the league is the number one defense well no surprise we knew New England this is what they do Wade Phillips was surprised the first time they played he goes my gosh they threw it almost every down so New England this offense the way it's been built Tom Brady very diverse they love to throw the ball second and five to Adelman and he's thrown down by Harris after a first down but you'll see the penalty marker in the secondary and that's giving a matchup to watch today Chris Harris jr. on Edelman the play went for eight let's see what the Hockley crew has ear well gonna be holding against Denver to holding defense number 21 the penalty is declined the play results in a first down they match up to watch we just saw it Julian Edelman back from the entry looked I thought sharp last week going against a defender and Chris Harris who Wade Phillips says is a special defender for guys just like Julian Edelman this is a tough matchup I think for Chris Harris just because of formations at movement by intamin he's not healthy either sore shoulder for Harris there's a handoff to white and it's a gain of two so first two plays pass plays then they go to the ground they went pass plays the first 9 plays in the game back here December November the 29th against the Broncos and last week they open up with 14 passes against Kansas City and the floor rush nothing surprises me Josh McDaniels what he'll do on the offensive side I think the difference between this game and they played late the year 3d twist terrified receivers I think Haley trusted about tool 6db Zen for temper on a second date play for the pass intended for Emily a trophy on a mat time Bradley Roby the former first rounder out of Ohio State who came up with the big horse bumble last Sunday against Pittsburgh as a little different that time Bradley Roby went across the formation with Julian Edelman we got to have a lot of different ways to attack this doing one offense Philips has shown diversity especially gets Pittsburgh [Applause] a third and eight here New England best in the league on opening drive touchdowns they did to seven times plus they did it last week against Kansas City he went room is almost intercepted and they will be forced to punt that was Darian Stewart ooh got a hand on it that sure makes you throw the football before you ready what's the in cut coming from the left and that football if it was going to be up it was gonna be intercepted Tom Brady tries to get rid of it fast when he get it so fast he lost control of the football and really a good break for Tom Brady there Ryan that matchup couple of months ago fair catch when he's tripped up right away that was king on the tackle after a 47-yard punt and alum peyton manning trots onto the field his 5th AFC championship game appearance the Broncos now set for their first snap from the 17 with Ronnie Hillman the running back in Manning under center [Applause] - tightens it got Vernon Davis on the field he played all of one snap man his first pass was intended for Hillman now last week Payton did not commit a turnover in the game that's the first time that's happened all season Phil but the football did not come out of his hand with a whole lot of velocity well do you expect from him today listen just like that be careful with the football let's just remember this is not the Peyton Manning of old through the injuries now he wins the game with his girls his function he wants to outsmart you they got a good running game they want to out tough you different defense different offense for dinner this year over last as ticked away nice play by McCourty it was intended for Vernon Davis Devin McCourty ex corner playing against the tight in on the outside Vernon Davis expect to see a little more of him this week or in this game because he is a fast tight in praise been invisible really in recent weeks at 11 snaps total over the last two weeks to Vernon Davis and again only one last week against the Steelers saw him alot in practice so anytime you practice a lot of thought he tells me to close the game third straight [Applause] for a gain of 11 I mean was good it's soft coverage at the top look how far Malcolm Butler is off he Manuel Sanders and the one thing we saw last week early in the game date man he can read it easily quickly got his body underneath him made a good throw not exactly what you expected though to see the Bronco has come out with free pass plays you know I do they like to start out trying to go fast to make you think they're going to do that then they settle in to the running game by Jamie Collins who was not here in that first batch up dexon for a loss of one he's just a modern-day linebacker number 91 coming around and what I mean by that he's big he could be a defensive bin he can cover guys really good Blitzer of course pretty good against the run game as we saw on that play he was out with an illness in the regular season manager and he was troubled all week with a back injury that kept him limited in practice this week CJ Anderson comes in for a second and 11 for Denver to the 40 this one is caught by Norwood for a gain of 13 well usually you see this New England offense they get up and challenge wide receivers but not so far here today couple throws where the off coverage good foot movement by Peyton Manning and then hey not dealing with the wind this week his confidence has already got to be up this is how he feels and how he's on the football here the early going first and ten the give to Anderson and a huge game against the Patriots including the overtime winner from 48 yards out that's a gain of two for CJ Anderson here's a look at the Broncos on the field at the moment including Jordan Norwood who made that catch a moment ago they've already played four different wideouts on this first drive including early in the game against the Broncos and he's such a great one stopper well one thing they've done Jim this doing the defense surprised a lot of people they lost Darrelle Revis Brandon browner oh it's going to be different no bigger up front the corners have really come through and played well so far this year in center [Music] [Applause] Thomas and then it's tossed in there the yellow marker on Logan Ryan Ryan who had such a good go of it the last time they met he held Thomas to only one catch on 13 targets but he can be fault here for the push-off pass interference defense first town and that spot is at the 42 of the Patriots yep Marbury our one-on-one and we've seen some off coverage but a definite foul there grabbed Demaryius Thomas Logan Rhine very aggressive likes to stay close to the receiver they're not afraid to take chances if he gets a chance they'll go for the interception and he's - about the 35 and it's sheared on the tackle after the 7 yard game postseason for banning the good stuff second all-time passing yards behind Brady has got his Super Bowl win and an MVP performance it was against the Bears the bad side of things the most losses the most home losses and that detractors will always talk about how he's got all the record for the regular seasons but the postseason that didn't match up the same listen he's had great regular-season you know a lot of those times he played on teams that weren't they good the 28th before he's twisted down by Justin Coleman pickup of 15 the drive to started all the way back at their own seventeen has now advanced to the redzone all the way across but Peyton Manning on the bootleg this is something I guarantee you caught this New England defense by a surprise they thought Peyton Manning would be behind the center game and I mentioned going to break that Peyton had thrown only the one touchdown pass all season at home it was a one yarder to Daniel's this one went for 21 was hurt that's part of the reason why but still the numbers were alarming when you say it about his home starts but how about that drive a little bit of everything couple runs that did okay but he threw the ball outside he ran the bootleg and then they confused the defense with Owen Daniels down the middle everything you would want for your offense to get players involved and they get confidence in your quarterback on that drive McManus so far in the playoffs seven kickoff seven touch backs against the Steelers he's got another touch back here was an 83 yard drive put together by the Broncos and out brady and company come out the Brady from pecan and that was intended for Gronkowski TJ Ward on the coverage those two go back to their pack 12 days in Arizona and Oregon and Gronkowski's looking everywhere for some help from the officials it doesn't get it yep one on one TJ Ward you sent it they've had many encounters very physical you can do all that within five yards I think it was a good play by TJ Ward well it forces comes out up 7 nothing what are you seeing out of Brady here at the start oh you know crowd noise he knows they got a good pass rush they kind of pressured him that first series so I think he's still trying to fill us way into the game get comfortable so you can make good decisions and good clothes to Thomas and in traffic he stripped up by Coleman and a gain of five and again the next-gen stats presented by mercedes-benz and back to Gronkowski and those who defended him in their matchup week 12 you see thwart only had two times it he was on if he got injured in the first quarter with an played four full games and have some tumors by Coleman defending on Fowler and now the Broncos will bring out Colquitt they got what they wanted a couple times Coleman in the slot and they love these type of patterns the Denver Broncos going straight up the field with four receivers New England knows it Coleman is ready knocked to death Britton Colquitt in a seventh year from Tennessee he's going to send it down to Danny M [Applause] and the dollar second in the league this year - Broncos gantry trapped at the great return by a band dole out to about the forty and it was Colquitt in on the tackle the punter makes the hit after a 28 yard run back the Walter Payton Man of the Year award presented by nationwide honors players who have significantly impacted both the game and their communities we coming up at halftime of announced the three finalists for this great award from the 40 after the big return by Amendola Patriots go to the ground we've got Stephen Jackson in the game then we know what to do and it's just about beating one guy but so far Wade Phillips just like he did against Pittsburgh last week Jim it's really mixed the coverages up and Josh McDaniels and Tom Brady not in sync with the right place the go against this defense so far is Wade Phillips co assistant coach of the year this year along with Hugh Jackson the offensive coordinator at Cincinnati now the head coach of the Browns third and 14 ladies going to look down the field looking for options behind they get to I'm it's Derek wolf again [Music] and a loss of one in the bunt for the third time here in the opening quarter well watch it's going to be three deep it's a really simple coverage I guarantee you they were not expecting this they had a man round trying to get people across the field you make Tom Brady hold it for an extra second that was one of the big keys for this Denver defense he holds it defensive pressure we'll get there to returners for the Broncos Omar Bolden who was their return this week with Annie he had put up a big return against the Steelers last week and his season's over that's a fair catch after a 45-yard punt catch by in Norwood you know - might be a flag on the field they're talking but Wade Phillips instead with his said with astonishment to us I just can't believe they came out that last game and threw it every down against this I think there's a lot of assistant coaches and coordinators who have that I can't believe they did this because they change it up so much week to week game plan by the way remember the kicking team was down field by Phillips and aggressive defense will did complete him want to make sure it wasn't a live ball am I right Jim they win a lot of close games Gary Kubiak said look we did been in those we're comfortable with it then we don't panic at the end look at this pass very close it's got to be full word in that miss Perez Hillman didn't at least try to go after it you saw Jonathan trini pick it up no champion campus flag is out Patriots have challenged it it's such a big play then it might be worth the challenge the big point is did anybody recover the football every knee did Brady picked it up New England is changing the ruling in the field that it was a forward pass so Edie Hockley to take another look at this one all right the challenge on the field here bring my carrion to tell us exactly what they're looking for right now in this sequence of replays so remember the ruling on the field is a forward pass incomplete in order to reverse you look for where it's released from the quarterbacks hand to where its first touch and from these angles we don't really have a clear shot at it so in my estimation they're gonna leave this stay on the field you saw Freeney pick it up and trot to the endzone there wouldn't be a touchdown it would be a point where he recovered it if the Patriots do in fact win the challenge and the Patriot benches showing signs of celebration pass was backward therefore the recovery by New England the question is the point from which the ball is released to the point that the ball his first touched or touched the ground that was backward been doing this ball the talk stays the same there are no time outs charged additionally the defender did not touch the pass in the air [Applause] so that's the first Bronco giveaway and a23 drived stretch because you look 22 and a half and here Hillman's got to go after it just because it's so close I mean watching it live you had to think ooh you don't want to leave that up to any second-guessing well you know he yeah he saw Freeney in front of him that's why he pulled off then it was good tight defense it made Peyton Manning go from one side to the other cause that back for Pat a winning challenge by Belichick has the Patriots now set up at the 22 the pass is complete and staying on his feet is golden with any spirit he's going to be Frank for that as Ward Miller hey contact tripped him up what a one-on-one and really what always catches my attention Bolden had a big game against this Denver defense when they played out here a couple of weeks ago after the winner was down but the catch is how hard Tom Brady throws he's short passes over the middle and outside that is a good call going down to the field he's down by contact and TJ more takes the extra hit david andrews is brought in to the patriots lining up as a fullback stephen jackson is the tailback here on a first and goal to go it's Jackson man Jackson picks up the cross for the touchdown and David Andrews the rookie from Georgia started the year at center comes in plays as a fullback on that occasion and helps lead the way Jackson to the endzone he does watch cannon number 61 he's in the end zone against his guy the linebacker Von Miller so that in Andrews those two blocks were enough to get it in the end zone how about Stephen Jackson it wasn't even signed until December 27th the all-time leading rusher I mentioned with the Rams he wasn't even written following the game said he watched one game the whole season of Thanksgiving Day game next thing you know here on the patriot roster and you're a game away from going to the Super Bowl he's a power and that situation was perfect the plant is no good this dowse key had not missed all year long he was one of only five place kickers who were perfect and he had a streak of 520 three consecutive makes until this one Broncos seven New England six Gustav ski over 500 consecutive makes jay Feely is a kickin expert what happened there Jay you know it looked like his plant foot was pointed in he didn't follow through like he normally does his hips and a square is interesting he lined up on the right hash then warm-ups cooking the extra point and he put it in the middle on that one I think there was something that was wrong in his mind and didn't follow through and do what he normally doesn't make the kick good point if you saw his left foot the liquors say touch back on this kickoff by the way just an observation by me is jay Feely the most jack pitcher you've everything not the questions but he could still be out there playing I think he's one of those who know any number of positions once you kick it off and make the tackle yep Sampson the whole dude look good watch the line footage chief even said good shot the last time he had missed the p80 was back in 2006 at Tennessee it's only the second effort of his career has been a big career first attempt on the short side only a couple Coleman there Chung there may be three Wednesday on first matchup but the run game going nowhere so remembered New England stopped a run game they get these obvious passing situations that's what they want to get paid Andersen's bumped out my Ryan of course you want to get any quarterback in those situations but they're going off of what they saw last week Tim and what we saw last week from Peyton Manning his first start in a long time but also pressing the wide receivers not playing soft open its third and four he's going deep down [Applause] manual Sanders in a gain of 34 it's a jump ball Malcom Butler did a great job in their first meeting and he just misplaced the ball Manuel Sanders beats him to it playing his feet went up attacked the football makes a tough catch [Applause] balls at the 40 of New England I thought it was going to be tight coverage but it wasn't they jumped out of it the game three releases citywide receive last play of the quarter as a gift to Hill them and he backs in for maybe one and after one it's games we've seen he's the difference maker when you need it he wasn't crying on those back-to-back plays he was not he was not in the game two years ago when we had the same matchup and the same Broncos the potential double-double with you well the last possession first half plus receiving the second half kickoff making sure they just want to give up the field goal chop second Sanders was the target they had exactly what day one they change up watch the little stutter by Emmanuel Sanders that little stuck there Oh fact I thought he did it on purpose I think he got caught by surprise but Peyton Manning goes if you didn't slow down that football might have been right on target you give him those looks he loves nothing more Peyton Manning then thrown those passes down the sava well not it might as well be the kicker actually jay Feely I think that's something that you rather enjoy doing that time today right he was never afraid to mix it up nope make a tackle or to see that more and more from kickers in the league don't make tackles the Patriots at the 20 with 33 seconds to go me if I was the Patriots I'd take a knee but if they do anything on offense or try something you think it's a scream draw whatever but why even take that chance you know you think about this first half Brady has been under fire the whole time by that Denver defense but here they are down only one score and it dominated they've won that challenge that was a huge thing for the Patriots led to their touchdown but again it's an eight point margin at the intermission one score game two touchdowns by Owen Daniels [Applause] and Owen wasn't so sure about things he's the last to leave the bench area the sideline Manning hits to the locker room after throwing for 128 yards and a couple of touchdowns who's thought that's right you know the Denver defense so good one of seven on third downs for New England always part of the story but you talk about Denver all right the Super Bowl halftime show the Pepsi with Peyton's performance in the first half but he said we could not give up on the run 39 yards very happy with the defense as well he said we need to put two halves together something they haven't been able to do is final words he's taken down at the 5-yard line Jamie Collins with that quick burst across again as well as Malcolm Brown and they deca meant the five well what happens Jamie Collins number 91 just reading the place he's the back go inside it frees him up but Peyton Manning initially had time to throw the ball nobody open tight coverage takes the sack they spotted somehow up at the defenses are just dominating the pace of play New England some struggles but they've had some moments where you see physically especially up front they have a chance to overpower that Denver offensive line and he's down it's Latimer Latimer the backup wideouts with the tackle after the 53-yard punt Brady looking for some protection from the line of this AB back for the Patriots first play of the third quarter Edelman is on the field Edelman and Gronkowski 39 yards combined in the first half rady coming out going for Gronkowski who was covered by Trevathan and you said at these two quarterbacks have been taking a pounding faint Manning couple big shots one low Tom Brady boy take as many big hits here today as you've seen him take all year and I don't care for your younger old then hurts hard to get the football down the field for Tom Brady doesn't have the time - look get that second look the fire one deep downfield Brady one of his last six [Applause] it takes it all the way to about the 35 he did get a block a little help from Keshawn Martin and it's a gain of 30 June and he's got speed here he comes across the field Trevathan just the end cut so sharp good timing by Tom Brady and you can see once he gets the football his head man he is tough to deal with so fast cover so much ground with those strides Gronkowski went to the sideline after the 31 yard play the longest of the day for the Patriots came in with back and knee issues scott Chandler's on the field for him complete to element at the 30 really good job temple that time Denver was not ready for that plane but then finally rob gronkowski somebody clearly beat a defender where they made a big play to get this offense back on track and the offense quickly advancing to the Denver 30 where it's a second and four - it is Amendola Stewart for the second time in this game comes in and delivers a vicious blow but again the Patriot receiver holds on gain of 10 nobody on him by he bit a mixup in coverage they let him go and Tom Brady just a couple throws but those feet give him in the ground no it's going to be rough driving the football down and the Dovan got fine last week for a head during a punt return when he tried to hit a Kansas City player he might want to tell him oblique what about that one [Applause] and it's incomplete White was the receiver and a Brady had a half a second longer to throw it it might have been a touchdown wait a bit of touchdowns everybody came inside Vance Walker 96 gets in there and Tom Brady hung in there as long as he could but not able to get they're gonna double-team to tighten Rob Gronkowski looked out the bottom of your screen easy to say now but that was your one on one and as we said all day long pressure mate Brady mood to leave was the one who tipped it Roby who has a nose for the football we've seen that over the course of his two years he ended up making the pick and Brady season which has been a remarkable season so under man across the whole offense to get unto this point and Peyton Manning begins the celebration here as now his house key will get set for an onside kick off watching Manning through that last series reminded me so much of nine years ago when we were at the AFC Championship at game in Indianapolis and he was sitting on that sideline and could barely watch came back from the twenty-one and three deficit the Patriots have a high number of different onside kicks you always got to be alert for the one right down the middle where the kicker tries to become they have actually had two successful seed bought a panel was the first time in history that two quarterbacks spent for the fifth time in postseason history and in all five occasions the quarterback who's playing at home you know let's go back to what we said started the game I think he did it once again Payton when you saw how he played he knows the team they're tough it's about the defense you got to go out there and compliment it when the offense did all day long [Applause] everyone around the Patriots will tell you they had never seen if it was possible to have more motivation or a bigger chip on your shoulder they had never seen Tom Brady so laser focused like he was this season well it could have been focused Tom Brady always finds something to trapped whatever it is discount them to drive himself in the football team but they ran up against a Super Bowl defense of the different Broncos but they just couldn't make enough play so they don't win the game Denver is a franchise is going to the Super Bowl for the eighth time that's tied for the most in history along with the Patriots the Cowboys and the Steelers all of them with eight trips Gary Kubiak in his first year as the head coach of the Broncos takes the team
