Top 10 Games of 2019 (And Goodbye to Sam)

[Music] yes time battle I'm Z Guercio Thank You Lee welcome back folks you are in for tubby big list I'd read it's a tree but well though you say that cuz the trees in the video for us so look we got Sam's shoulder out as each one goes by well cut a little bit more dang that's nice tough day where you go man no come back oh all right hey folks were talking about our top ten games of the Year 2019 now there's a couple things first of all it's December 13th so I guess a game could be released tomorrow but it won't be and there's also games that we did not get a chance to play it's to play all the game oh I'm playing them in 2020 I'm playing every game from 2016 can you imagine like if you made that year go up whatever game that would be I don't think it's due experience I get hear what he said I ignored the dumb joke about the wrong year in 2020 loose every game from 2016 that's that's about how long it takes to probably catch up let's be realistic that's true I wasn't being dumb I was being mathematical there is a pedra I mean technically those games that come out yeah so right but yeah so I I was counting through and for this list there was about 200 possibilities of games I played and then there's still I would say it was about 5 maybe 10 games at most of where I was like that might have had a chance I don't know you know but there's a lot of games that came out 2019 like I'm like probably not but you never know and we always talk about these things 5 10 years later and things may have changed they go overall this was a really strong year for me not because I liked 200 games from it but because there are 10 15 20 games that I really like from it I think I have two crossovers with you absolutely at least maybe four no way three just let's settle on three three I think it's due and I think I've won crossover with Sam you got to probably that's right have you been looking at my list no I'm just saying you probably good I'm pretty sure that that one's gonna be under list I'm pretty sure that one's gonna be on your list and even that one might possibly be on your list so there's a possibility I'm 11 that's this 11 all right here we go let's start with number 10 oh I forgot a gimmick all right here we go you don't giving it's a top 10 of the year Tom what is that no I wrote 10 on my arm you can't say that stop it got you you're writing it stop writing yourself high school come on stop writing yourself okay stop writing on yourself yeah you get it you get it okay pictionary no I actually debated whether or not I was gonna put this on my top ten of the year because it's actually a second edition oh your list if it's not your number one or two some things are for something is afoot not just the things at the end of our legs go my number 10 Atlantis rising 2nd edition this is going to be on your list of garbage a so this is a a the reason I put a top 10 that's what surprised me no I like cooperative games no I'm not saying that I'm just saying it surprised me let's make your top has more just like opponents it has is you - all this Magni components it has great artwork and they made a lot of really cool changes from the original edition and if you look really closely there might even be Vikings in that article there isn't there isn't but there's a Viking expansion 11 out of 10 I actually really struggled with this because I didn't want to put something that will has already been produced from the from another year on this list okay didn't want to do that boy this feels like Omo it's not a new game but it's at least 1.5 oh for sure yes I think it's a clear second edition I don't think I was gonna prove what my hammer bit strong second edition it is not a reproof which is what kind of I kind of convinced myself I talked myself I'm saying go ahead you were arguing with yourself yeah kind of but that is my number 10 this is a tremendously good game you need to go check it out if you have not yet already great components great gameplay Elena strides in second edition is my number 10 correct I believe Z mentioned number 10 when he reviewed this game my 10 you said the number 10 at least in your review I remember that yeah yeah yeah he put a 10 out of 10 oh what I rated the game yes that game I do rate a 10 out of 10 all right well if it doesn't make this list and this is the best year ever yes that's true but no crossover no my number 10 pick is a rolling right there are a ton of these and most of them feel repetitive a lot of them are tiny changes on something we've seen ad nauseam sometimes this one feels different to me I really enjoyed it and it's a good-looking game two trails of tukana from one of my favorite companies out there to be honest a porter games just puts out great game after grey game my opinion not to say they don't have some I don't enjoy or misses this was a good year for them and this was a great game I love that buff weird-looking cat and I things and islands warts again right how'd we cut you will be bird dovey up meow in there yeah this one is a flip cards and right kind of game the cool thing is you flip over two cards and you must draw a connecting line between those two types of terrains that are adjacent somewhere on your board and you build a network so it kind of feels like a network building game really you're connecting different islands or villages to each other getting bonus points me it's not a lot going on but a really fun thinkI little game and I've had a blast with it so I really like this one trails of to con if you're a fan of the genre at all or want to jump into it and have them play one of these this is a great jumping on point wait my number 10 is a decent game but a great experience and that trumped I like the game but I love the experience and that is the King's dilemma yeah this is a legacy style game and I don't know it's like 20 games of it you play or so where you are a group of people trying to control the king and you go through these story cards and you make decisions so you'll find a pile metal that's a lot and we turn this into weapons or do we turn it into medical things help people well oh I chose weapons right and it's that this there's some pretty tough decisions in this game though and occasionally you will find yourself decision though it is right but they have harder decisions like has to be based on context though right your situations they gave me I'm sure but what the game has though is it has ufd your goals and so sometimes you pick the goal that helps you and inside them like well I wouldn't actually have voted for that like you maybe like will you meet a woman no she's a witch should we execute her or not yes because I'm like the stronghold religious set you know and the Empire does she float well it's not that funny in fact the games that but the stories are really well written two really neat concept as it goes through it is a one-time playthrough but get a lot of games out of it yeah so the King's dilemma my number 10 [Music] right my number nine is from a company known as come on limited and this is in the don't think we've ever called them come on limited we're also the diced our LLC no one ever says that true well we are whoops that I've been saying it wrong this whole time this is an aside family it is the new installment zombicide invader really I really like what they've done with this when they've kept a lot of the other rules that are like I really like the addition of concentrated fire now I really thought oh great sure made it feel more thematic it definitely made it feel more music and when that abomination pops out on the first round you don't have to spend the rest of the game running away from him as you look for something that can actually kill him yeah you can actually have a chance to knock out that abomination on the first round with concentrated fire and I like that because what other of games I enjoy zombicide black playing is my favorite but that's one of the hitches of it is when if that abomination pops out right next to you you're gonna spend the rest of your time practically running away from it as you search for fire dragon fire and which we call it uh or what have you so that took away from the experience but when you we have the about the opportunity now to have concentrated fire now it's like okay target rich environment let's rock you know and you could still fail don't get me wrong so there's a there's a risk reward there but the opportunity the feeling that it gives you to have the chance and you don't have to just turn tail and run I love that I love that addition I also liked the the having to go and get oxygen before you go outside I like that I don't know what you would call it the steps that you know you just can't run outside and start blasting away you procedural I guess you have you have to go get oxygen take before you go outside I just like that little cool thing I don't know I'm very cinematic good like favorite of the zombies for action yeah good job of the zombie sighs yeah I'm not a huge dump inside fan but it's not a mindless zombie site invader my number nine is one of the bigger games of the year one of the more complex games I played this year and I really enjoyed it it took a couple of plays to grow on me but grow on me it did because in space everyone can hear you scream everyone can hear you float this is black angel yeah I knew you like this one black angel is technically sort of kind of a successor to Selenia but Selenia was actually developed as a Knopf brand from France that's like an offshoot it didn't drink an offshoot from black angel while black angel was in development for many years so lenio came out using one of the mechanisms from it because this game is huge black angel is a huge involved game and I liked Selenia so I went into this thinking I'm hoping I like this sort of bigger bulkier experience and I did I think it's a it's a dice driven game in which you're using those dice to take actions you are on this black angel spaceship floating towards a distant planet and you have to deal with all sorts of things mechanically it's really clever and this is kind of using the systems in tois which came out many years ago but this theme is so much better in my opinion it's just richer it's more engaging it's interesting the game looks really good if even if there are a lot of things and icons and stuff you got to figure out but if you give it the time and you don't trust that first play experience which is sometimes gonna be really rough in this game because of the overwhelming amount of things I think you'll find a game that is very rewarding so Black Angel if you want something robust my number 9 pick Sam was pointing at me I don't know why because just he was threatening you know I was gonna say something but but I was on a roll yeah you kind of filled the filled space you're talking was almost interesting so we didn't interrupt thank you I was going to say didn't you call Selenia Salim eeeh no I don't dislike it sure you did oh it sounds like something I would say though yeah something Sharky yes pretty sure you said that I don't think I did I didn't mind black angel look like I use a little goodbye yeah it's it's really heavy there's a lot going on yeah but you know you got a bind up another wine hopefully one of my jams smart one of my jams these days is those card games you can play and do combos and things and let assume that would be funny no it's a wonderful world really I really like this game whoa we were to solve out today cuz copies keep showing up it's a wonderful world is a game in which you you're playing cards you're drafting cards and I'm like drafting and then you use these guards to get resources or then you use the resources to build the cards which give you more resources a little engine building game and I really enjoy it this is a small game that looks bigger right it's in a big ticket to ride sized box it's not that big it's it's probably smaller than let's say race for the galaxy but that's what it's similar to and I really enjoy this one I play so smoothly it's fun and I mean the kicks are version has all these modules and stuff I didn't care about any of that the base game itself really solid game I don't know where this one will end up as the years go by but for right now I'm really liking it so yeah we did a top 10 list of anticipated games at at Essen this was on that list this is one of the few on that list that has survived that I was very bad at my anticipation I'm a bad anticipate err I think it's a thing right sure winner this is one of the ones that got away this year for me I did not get a chance to play this yet but I'd like to try it and I don't like that cover I stopped on with that Cup I think it looks boring and I don't like that title how do you really don't like that time do you think that cover looks boring it's interesting hi my see that cover I think to myself wow it looks the cover looks like a chair for a park I don't want to go to no I think it looks great I think it's a great I mean front cover I'm gonna play the game I don't know if I like those I don't know if you would like it but yeah I want to play to get you terrible terrible idea the point is I want to play a little weird he's good he's we're the best one for all right my number AIDS I never ate almost made my my top ten surprises because I didn't know if I was going to like it I got introduced to it at origins not this year but last year and I think the last time we did in origins preview 2018 game yeah no it's not I don't know no no it was published this this year okay but it was being I guess marketed and coming to Kickstarter you know that type of stuff it's called Rurik dawn of Kiev oh this one I enjoy a lot because it is a hybrid yeah my I'm really enjoying coops and hybrids a lot right now and abstracts if they look good there are no abstracts on my list so anyway what I saw that he slapped his head yes Lesley I did like this yeah we all doing it yes but rue Oregon of Kiev is is a hybrid game there's a lot of resource management you're trading on your boat and that's really kind of abstracted even you're not even really trading with anybody you're just filling up columns on your boat so that you can get more money to spend during the course of the action selection or where you have to kind of bid on these different places with either the number of guys that you have it's a really neat game and the reason I call it hybrid is because there's a lot of you're already feeling mechanisms that are going on but there's also a lot of conflict you don't have to battle but often battling at the right time in the right area against the right person is really advantageous for you to do so so and that's what I liked about it it took those two camps and really brought them together well yeah and I I like hybrid games I think probably more than one camp or the other right now go ahead small point of winter I don't know when we do this but Rainer says that that if it has something to do with the stupid licorice things no it doesn't okay how's work fine no he said that Berwick is his favorite abstract strategy game from 29 ok he's a weirdo brainers a weirdo I love him but he's a weirdo who tried to peddle this licorice candy that looked like it came out of a grease can with everybody no I did not have one it wasn't I took one smell of it no yeah many people have the same reaction that Roy is is mimicking over there and it was disgusting did you have one it was amazing amazing but I was all right you know these guys dislike it the better I mean I'm I have affectionately called it evil infused demon candy that's that's what it is as opposed to the non evil people an ice demon candy yeah that's my number eight Rurik and Dawn of Kieth alright my number eight is Azul summer Pavillion yet another Azul feel free to put it up there anytime you want to one of mine that got away thank you really wanted to play this well you haven't played this no you guys kept playing it without me yeah recurring thing yeah we keep sitting in the room and then we know you're about to walk in we like cover it up real quick what are you guys doing I'm loving math general math arithmetic I pull it up board hey Bob this one is the third in the line of Azul games I like the first one still only I thought the second one was better is Azul stained glass of syndrome this better than that I would say you know what it's available yeah I don't very rarely agree perfectly with you but that's exactly how I feel second better at first I'm not sure if this one's better than the second year of a sidestep thing but it's up there it's better than the first thing yes okay cool yes one is has it still keeps that robust drafting part of it it's really engaging that's the one thing that's survived through all of them the unifying thing then after you've done all that you're going to then take turns around the table just placing the pieces you've collected onto your own board you're building these patterns and how you do it what bonuses you shoot for there's a really cool new thing which has a central board with bonus tiles and if you put down a specific combination on your board surrounding a spot that gives you bonuses you go to that central board and plug some bonuses and so that's really cool knowing ooh I need those two yellow tiles that are out there in the center I'd better trigger this bonus before somebody else does because I want to get those boom and then you add them to your pool you can use them immediately it's really fun stuff components of course are great the the the tower that they include to hold the discarded tiles better than the second printing that's better they stuffed one chancy thing about agreed agreed and this one's better cool so yeah it's a great game you got to give it a try super dull summer Pavillion is it like a thing for the Azul tout it does the same thing the cincher one yeah maybe yeah you could maybe I could just make that myself if you're a genius well I guess I'm out all right my ability is my mechanical belly a second two men I'm a kindergartner it it would be second to a kindergartner you are correct my wife helps me fix stuff she does oh my number eight is heavier euro game that I really enjoy and that is the sequel to game McMahon last year that we all really liked I think I like the sequel the best of us and that's Cowan's of the West Kingdom yeah you guys really like the architects of the West Kingdom I think no I don't think so no paladin's is heavier yes yeah I think I like architects there is less interaction a lot less interaction sure well I mean it's worker placement it's as much interaction as any worker placement if I do this and then you can't well how the worker placement is on your own board but you're drafting the workers at the beginning of the game you are I think I like this game because as time goes by even though I mocked it for many years I feel like I am kind of points out kind of guy and that's what this is pick your poison pick your strategy and as it's really neat three color system where when you don't have no poison you spend stuff on one color it will make your other colors go up some and you have to kind of figure out this seesaw action on how to do that there's a lot of neat things involved in this it's definitely heavier I almost like twice as happy that's the first one but and I like them both but this one is really enjoyable to me paladin's of the West Kingdom good year for euro games yes no kidding in fact I'll be doing a top ten on that very subject number seven all right the next couple of games are gonna be Viking games just get that out there in the middle yeah no one is surprised no one was sitting down to spit at the screen with their soda I'm just telling you the next two or Viking games well I don't know we'll talk about it when we get there my number 7 is definitely a Viking games called rivers of Midgard this one is something that I was introduced to not last year at PAX or this year pax but last year at PAX and a really too old games have had a good time oh it just got released this any game that I played before November doesn't make the list wrong absolutely wrong I really enjoy champions in Midgard this takes and makes it more of a Euro style champions of Midgard is very hybrid between a marathon gyro you're rolling on a lot of dice yes but you're also doing a lot of work replacement type stuff Reavers kind of takes less dice rolling out of the out of the you're still rolling dice but they just kind of sit there and they'd only do anything else but there's a whole lot of that it kind of they up the game on the euro-style part of it they're coming out with another one I think in the third installment where is nothing but a matter of thrush so I'm really looking forward to that one because I've liked these two I still like champions better but Reavers is a really fun game and I really do enjoy it now I love the artwork I love the components everything about the game I really enjoy and that's why I've made a list but also even though it's a heavy Vikings huh as it but also Viking sure sure that's that's that's a boon it's always a boon that's good as my number seven rivers am it my number seven is a drafting game a little bit of a lighter game than then you know paladins or black angel and this is a game called Hodari and Hodari is a very neat as much endings the one that got away from me yeah but it it's a neat game it feels a bit like the very famous seven wonders in which you are going to be drafting cards and building up your own here it goes tab below cards one of those words as we were saying Tom that nobody uses how much they're talking about board games and I didn't even know that word existed yeah nobody's like extra letters today it's fancier table table it's a golden table right they're adding a AMSO table in my building okay golden table that's a stupid joke I don't get it Oh like the symbol for coal Wow see ya anyway super nerd anyway this one is really neat because not only because of everything you are trying to keep up in the air right you have all these spinning plates you're trying to continue you don't want to fall behind in any one area or it'll start affecting the other ones but it's also neat because every round has two parts and the first half you are drafting one card or possibly chucking it for money right but you're doing one from each of the different colors which are types of cards during the second half of each round some of those have become discarded and you can take from any of them and that's where things start to fall out of out of sync with the other players so if I really want to invest I'm gonna get one blue card but for the second half of the round I might pluck a couple more whereas you get none and on my tableau starts to develop very differently than yours I really enjoyed it it's fairly simple but it's engaging quick quick turns and it's a it's a good-looking game too it reminded me of all those little things I like in drafting games and it was one that keeps coming to the table for me and I keep enjoying it so Hodari my number 7 pig of the year my number 7 is a game that when I played it even after I was I'm playing it I didn't occur to me it would make my top 10 it's a pretty small list game although leaders recently released an expansion but it plays so elegantly and so clean it's fantastic and that would be the name just fell out of my head I do have read that here whereas Arkana yes this game which this won't be the only time you hear about this today I'm sure whereas Arcana which I like best with - although you can't play it with multiple players each person's magician and you are essentially you have a small deck of cards a really small deck of cards which will be different every game and then a special character and then there are different cards that are available on the table and you were trying to figure out some combination between all these to get an engine going to get enough victory points to win and it's so bare bones and feel and yet you were trying to figure out the best combinations I really would like it it - Dominion in a sense when I played Dominion I put 10 decks of cards in the table and I figure out how those cards go together that's how this feels you have a hand of cards and I look at these cards I look at what's available on the table and look a little bit what my opponents are doing because that will affect me too because I don't want to go for the same things they are and it just it's a machine but it's also different every game which is really cool it's easy to teach easy to play really nice components and another winner for Tom lemon really you know after race for the galaxy and all that I was really surprised that much I liked this one whereas Arkana it's really great and I saw them played the expansion yet which I hear is good yeah it's good it is good yes got away from me this one that's cuz we you mentioned that yesterday we talked about best experiences you kept playing to silver and gold I was playing Razer can oh you were yeah okay that's cool [Music] all right my number six it is a IP it's a game that is based on a popular IP video game of the same name and that is God of War the card game is Wow yes I really do enjoy this game and it is another cooperative game that I really enjoyed now I had my I had my beeps with it as we were playing through it we did a row and I did a live stream of it one day on one of our testing Tuesdays and we we got a lot of stuff wrong and there's some some of the problem with that was found in the rulebook fortunately I was able to talk to the design always playing the robo cover myself no I don't do that at all be yes and I was able to contact the designer well I was taught how to play the game it at come on Expo this year and so I had that connection that I was able to draw up on to ask him what we were misunderstanding what we were missing and with his explanation the game just kind of opened up for me and it really is a streamlined game I've never actually played the video game so I can't really talk about how closely it matches but I just watched the come-ons trailer for the card game that they made and they spliced into it a lot of video game gameplay and how that gameplay matches what you're doing in the card game and so I think it it is a good board game adaptation of the video game but I've never played it so I can't say but according to the trailer that looks really really like they just you know tit-for-tat almost so I really do enjoy this game and it was a lot of fun so go check it out my number-6 got a war the card games I like the video game a lot really isn't amazing then I bet that's your number six then nope because I haven't played the board game yeah but the video game I thought about putting it on my list but I thought you know it's boy every time we do one of these there's a comment it's like I I thought this was video games alright my number six is a two-player only game that a much like Sam actually I did play this some time ago in prototype form and I was excited to see what it was gonna look like finally hmm the components were already pretty good but the final product is gorgeous and a really engaging pusher love kind of game called Naga Raja Naga Raja it's from Huracan games I tend to like their games quite a bit this one looks fantastic and it is a game in which you are building up your own temple with tiles that you are winning from the center and from your three entrances there you are trying to touch those different relics around the outside you get to a certain number of victory points you win the game but these dice are really cool we're gonna be playing some cards from your hand to take dice roll them and try to have the most coins gold coins represent it some sides don't show coins instead you can catch to that side in and play a card for an ability that's cool and it's mess with each other and whoever has the most coins wins the tile places it it's really it's got a really fun flow to it back and forth as I build up mine you are maybe getting more cards if I'm taking more towels you're getting more cards it's got this nice push and pull you also have the ability the best tiles around my board are sixes it goes like three threes fours fives and sixes there are three sixes so they're eaten they're great I want them because they're gonna help me get to 25 or whatever I need but if I reveal all three I immediately lose the game yeah as his number the beast that's right I want to reveal too however if I'm getting close the opponent has a bunch of cards where they get to look at some and I'm switch them you get to manipulate stuff so I've won and lost by having that happen where you can mess with the opponent be like oh you're winning boom you have all three sixes you just lost I want to play that's not really fun that reminds me of a movie clip from a Michael J Fox movie yeah number of the beast teen werewolf no no it's uh I can't remember the neighborhood I felt a little like future Tudor all that is an orphan I feature three dog Hollywood Hollywood less orange vanilla soda for you boy but anyways at some point in movie he I think he's like a social worker or something like that he's dealing with this orphan girl trying to get her into a home okay holidays or something like that and she's a little bit of a character I always put it that way and at one point in the movie he says no I wish it's okay I checked their head there's only two sixes we're fine okay but usually only two yeah no yeah no I was great I need to now look up this movie I'll never watch anyway my number six not Raja my number six is not on Sam's list I know you know because was on a surprise list what about on my list is it on my low I think you played this one yet you don't know me what is Aquatica nope never played a Kuwata cast he's the other one that got away he's said on he said when we were talking about her not my surprises list he's never played it yet well maybe he say this is the main one that got away this really want to play this game cuz I think I'm gonna like it I think you are well you you this is for some reason this is like one of your favorite themes I think I do like the underwater thing I do too though and this has that cool artwork ins up I the thing I like about is what Sam likes about it is that you have that hand of cards you play them one at a time but you can play one it lets you pick them up and you have to figure out the best time to do that but this game also lets you buy other cards but the neatest thing about the game is that you have this virtual currency that you get by playing a card but also by sliding these cards and you have to figure them out in flipping mantas and as the game goes by you me like I'm gonna do I just conquered us Kingdom it's really neat and it's at it it's all mechanisms they made a little so anyway huh the theme is their bit I guess but it's mostly the mechanisms of the sliding and the plaintiff cards it doesn't hurt that has those cool plastic mantas that are buzzards nice learn me this is a very cool game I don't know how it's coming to America yet but I do know someone's bringing it over because that's inevitably people like how many get it yeah but cosmic drone has two strong hits now you know that smartphone now there this one that's 40 solid tools in a row so Aquatica my number six nice very cool all right my number five my number five and I'm thinking this is going to be one of the crossovers with you me yep pretty I don't know I can't remember you've already talked I guess I know no matter what um anyway it's Clank legacy acquisitions incorporation no I told you say no no matter what uh-huh it's gonna be on there I'm pretty sure pretty sure on your ankle over this is on your experiences list right oh wait no stop so sorry I should get a fight over right now because I I do like legacy adaptations of games that have already been like for example pandemic legacy is my favorite way to play pandemic risk legacy is your favorite way to play blood rage sure okay I remember yeah that's fine you said it I did oh not so the legacy aspect is what really kind of brings us to the forefront I'm not a big fan of the base game of Clank I like Clank in space much better as a core game but the acquisition is incorporated a kind of story that gets thrown on top of Clank and this one is what really rose it to the top four for me I not that big of a deck builder fan but the story and how something new gets added to every single game that you play sometimes both before the game and after the game that was really intriguing as well so that's all of that kind of mixed together is what really kind of put this on my list I really enjoyed it so that's my number 5 Clank legacy acquisitions incorporated pretty sure all right we are up to 5 my number 5 and and 5 and up for me are absolute slam dunks this is like 99.5 tens that's it well it's been an amazing year for you these games are like they're sticking around you know and even this one and that's saying something because this game will run out it's got limited content this game called detective City of Angels detective City of Angels you puts you in the shoes of a detective surprisingly enough of a gumshoe you know and you are going to be investigating something that happened in the city usually a miter the game is really interesting because while you can all play without someone running the game you can do that that's really the way it was primarily meant to be and that is having one person who is kind of running the session a la role-playing game this kind of what this feels like in some ways this feels like a role-playing detective game yeah I agree you know everybody is on their own you're not cooperating unless you want to there's a mode for that too and I'll slip in a caveat here and say this is one of the few games where this works where you can have you can pick up you play full co-op and that's fine you play solitaire two-player co-op without the the guy who runs and I forget the title they use a word for that but doing it with that person holding all the cards so to speak is an immersive experience totally feels like a role play they're gonna you're gonna ask queries of the suspects tied to something else like oh you really knew clue I'm gonna go back over here move around town go back over here and ask this person about this knife I just found and the person running the game will give you an answer a little car that says some text they give it to you and you have to read that of course but I also figure out are they lying to me almost for certain is there a better response that I'm not getting yes over you would not do that really cool system you've got to play this thing so detective City of Angels so good my number five my number five is a game that I definitely like more than both these guys I like the original game in this series and the this is the second in this universe and that is lockup the full name I guess is lockup a role players tale oh wow yes I really love this worker placement game Z is less enamored with it than myself although you also played it at like 1:00 in the morning right you did I did remember you played it live with the 24-hour marathon anyway Wow I like this worker placement game because it feels extremely tense I it's uh I know people don't like to use when we use the terms this kills another game but this kills Aladdin's dragons for me it has that similar feel where does a little bit of blind bidding because you can put a couple years I sound and you can only go to each place once so if I go somewhere and Sam put something there and I know he's clearly beating me there I can't go back so that first time I go to a spot I need them to say what am i committing to that area other than that it's basically collect the resources tournament for cards that's the kind of the outside of the game for that worker placement thing is so well done it feels so streamlined so good that even people who aren't normally prone to analysis paralysis will sit there and think about their choices because it's that cutthroat I very rarely leave this game without being slightly annoyed with how someone else played Wow not because they're bad player just because you're like yeah and I really enjoyed this one pretty sure it lends dren Aladdin's dragons it's safe to say that that's the right one I'm thinking about it probably could have just died of old age anyway well that's that's that's quite true yeah cuz the older games are no longer worth while some of them that's right some yeah that's what I thought you're promoting game no look seriously okay yeah if you own any games pre-2000 you need to throw them away or see it may not be generally reflected by the views of the dice that's not a 5 ok 2005 the 4 2005 I'm still good on that thing all right my number four is another one that kind of got promoted from when I was going through looking at the games of 2019 I was kinda I kind of had two columns on my pad of paper one of them was surprised as one of them was was top games of 2019 and this one got promoted because it was not only it was a surprise but I enjoy the game so much it made the promotion over to this list and that is the funcle' verse strategy game oh yeah no I you like this more I thought I like this the most in I grew Oh what you think vocals are stupid you've said this they are nice I can't get the word out they look stupid they're not stupid they just because all they do is I don't like hold on they're not stupid all you do is look at them they're decent they look stupid then they are pop figures okay sure say they're stupid say it no all right the strategy I mean honestly when I was when I first heard about this game I was like okay sure I get a Batman and Robin going up against the Joker and Voldemort know Harley Quinn Harley Quinn thank you I get that okay they harry potter is really really popular so they made a thing about that what threw me off and I was like man this is jumping the shark the Golden Girls and I was like in a arena battle game you're gonna throw a couple of very pleasant but ladies wait very blessing its back and he watched and Rob yeah sometimes they're nasty yeah Sheldon Ark that's their sweet shower yeah that's snark I saw it was just like whatever and then we played the game and then we played the game some more and then we played skit and I really do enjoy the game it's it's a great fun little system and just having the opportunity to say Blanche just took out Batman that's just amazing to me that's just really cool it's funny on a date it's I was gonna say to dinner but no she talked him into do it after she kicked his butt that's right but anyway Matt's my number four funk / strategy game it's really fun it's a great time I'm excited because I know the game has done well that this is not a one-shot thing that will see expansions for it that's anime I mean they're already announced Jurassic Park we better see the rest of the Golden Girls you know right so this is a big surprise yeah for me and for you too I think yeah I liked it a lot I mean it's probably my top 20 I just surprised it it's fine yes I get it so anyway alright my number four pick is a reworking of an older game and I thought they completely and absolutely knocked it out of the park with the reworking this is claustrophobia 16:43 oh I didn't even consider this but like I figured it says isn't it the same game almost they reworked some stuff okay yeah it's a cool cup it's not a pure reprint it is much like several other second editions that might or might not show up on my list this has reworked you didn't use just the picture of the dice this time I'm in conversation with Roy yeah yeah you like it look at that that's good anyway this one is going to be a two player only game with one side playing condemned criminals kind of I mean like a bunch of humans basically humans going down into these caverns to battle the the forces of darkness absolutely Neil and so the fighting games gonna be a clash it's gonna be a real now dungeon crawl but it's one that is very manageable for me one that I find both thematic it checks off that box for me the mechanisms are clever they are contained it's not a game that feels like as they were putting it together sprawled out of their hands I find that in a lot of these kinds of games like look you could have left all this on the cutting room floor and I find those things to track for me this one does not feel that way what's there is well done it's robust it's there for a reason I like that this one and it's a fairly short game you play about an hour 90 minutes you know so I really really like this game this was a nice upgrade to the previous version of claustrophobia and I was very happy to get my hands on it so very good stuff that's good that's a good pig if you played that with me you enjoy yeah it's good it's it has that tension where cuz I remember when we when we played it on on the live stream that's right I was so I was way too deep into together you were like searching for an exit hit a tenon and then there was a bunch of stuff coming behind me and I was like so you gotta like it's got some exploration too and I died so but I mean it's just the way it is there you go claustrophobia 16:43 my number four pick now in the studio we have this thing in a sense where a game will come in and I might be slightly interested in but if it's one of the other guys jams and like okay it's theirs and I just like going on the letter Jim touch it no but like if it's Warhammer you know Sam will grab it so this game I would never have touched probably just because I'm busy doing other games but because of that Essen I mentioned is yesterday where Ignasi came and taught me the game imperial settlers Empire's to the north I want to touch it because I like it pure settlers Wow I didn't feel like it needed to be done again but holy cow do I like this game it is so fun this is blowing my mind ah okay so blew my mind right because I didn't think I would like it that much publishers if you want time to put your game on his top ten you got to get them and teach them how to play the game live at Essen yeah no it's the the thing is I wouldn't have touched it otherwise because I was just under the impression it's similar to imperil set where's it doesn't feel like a pyramid all right and was already I know they're gonna come out with ten factions I'm like all right he got that you know and then I played it and I wanted to keep playing it I'm gonna you know this Japanese expansion let me play the new factions because it has that thing I like which is that whole you know moving all these different levers that I have and as the game goes by again more and more levers and I also thought the difference between the factions here was pretty pretty strong cool yeah it's also and I don't mean this as a derogatory against game it's not that hard to figure out the game mm-hmm and I like that because there's a lot of times you'll play a game and like hoof how am I gonna win with this and right well listen you play it 20 times you'll figure it out here I look at the deck I'm like okay I know what I'm supposed to do right and I mean there's still exploration and stuff to be done but man I it's gonna get confused with Imperial settlers I still almost wish that they hadn't put that name on it at all they just announced did you see they nest reinfection the Romans Tom - Roman factions take it announced anything they could announce the most the Pennsylvanians and what I would be excited about that but your woods nobody else chick strategy iowans and I would still be like I'm kidding Iowa I love you but yeah I really really like this game my top for the year the Texans needs to be there next expansion yeah but they wouldn't get along with anyone they would think they're better than everyone and be so big it won't be the finiman the the Rhode Islanders he didn't hear any of my insults that I thought it was really good I was waiting for him to react but he didn't know there are some things that just aren't on the radar number three oh hello my number 3 fantasy flight game is it is a fantasy flight game I'm sorry I didn't said that kind of strangely but it is a fantasy fight game and they have another game that they put out that I've always referred to as Star Wars in a box and if you want the episode 4 5 & 6 feeling of the Star Wars universe Star Wars rebellion is is your go-to but if you're more interested in the fringe of that universe to fill things bounty hunters that kind of stuff Star Wars out of rim is your Star Wars in a box and that's my number 3 Star Wars outer rim there you go i I just really enjoy the fact that if you really really want to you can have now you don't start off with this but you got to work to get it you can have Han with Chewie in the Falcon with quad laser cannons and modifications and all this kind of stuff and that's just really cool to me and but beyond that you you don't have you can't play all of the characters in the Star Wars universe you play it from the the aspect of being those bounty hunters that are in the Outer Rim Charlie just trying to make a living and so you're gonna run into Leia you're gonna run into boss you're gonna run into all of these other people at these different locations but it's from the perspective of being a bounty hunter trying to make your way in the galaxy you're not part of the rebellion you're not part of the empire you are trying to balance your reputation with all these different things so that you can make yourself better and that's what I really like about it it just took a different advantage point a different vantage point then you would expect and it still feels very much like a Star Wars game and I really enjoyed it number three Star Wars outer rim that's one eye I want to play it's um yeah I think I would like to you alright my number three is a cross over oh oh the next three of yours that crossovers yes who's that one who's this one one that's home to me which one I don't know which one I'm gonna go with Reds that's right okay res Arcana is my number three pick for everything Thomas said it's this feeling of doing so much with very little it's a combo lover's absolute dream if it's about if you like that feeling of I need to use this power to turn that into gold use the gold to buy this and then with that power I can make more of that which lets me finally build it it's amazing it's like everything has been condensed to absolute minimums really I mean that's right what you need 10 victory points to win yeah that's it right it's a given what you have a deck of eight cards you know it's like it's it's unbelievable one and and it does so much with that that I truly find it fascinating and because the game includes so many cards not that it's an outrageous number but you're using eight that means you'll be use seeing different things all the time the expansion gives you more cards more powers so if you really are playing at tons and get the expansion you inject some new life in there it's it's an astounding game I really have been loving it and it's not even a theme I like yeah I don't even like I even find that I mean it seems super generic but the gameplay is where it's at and it's truly captivating so rezar kana yeah my number three very cool for number nine number three I joined the people this is the most popular game that came out in 2019 I think hands down up gamer games indeed it is we wait fan which is weird because it doesn't you're like wait 2019 yeah it came out like the first week of January or something that was really early this year but this game yes it's got a lot of hype and yes there's just I just like it I mean every time I play it I find myself again I'm drawn by these engine building games about Birds he hats it's always gonna be a pub it's gonna be about do any of them have magic powers waterfowl no this is one I def we like more than you for sure actually I need to play this again I have I haven't played very much of it so I need to just play some more to see what I think of it but I liked it I did not dislike it it was just sort of getting so much love that I went into a thinking alright game impress me you know sure I never a good way to tackle going into a game as you were beginning it so and that is always a problem right when there's that much hype but this happened to stake Myers games twice the second time this happened was with tapestry yes and so people just were like wow this game's amazing and it was good but it didn't make my top ten and some people even had negative reactions to tapestry because of this so my number 3 3 as we reboot our systems here is this beautiful town next to the mountain just imagine that but letter with birds the birds that's the horror expansion that's coming Oh speak of which Sam someone mention is two comments do you think for outer rim they will make a Mandalorian expansion and would you want it well here's the thing you can already played bubble fed mando I believe is his name yes ma'am and okay Rosie no I said there's already Boba Fett in the game wait up at one point Mandalorian and I want his cargo mando right two different people have called a man yeah I think that hand for Mandalore in the lorry that guy did not know his name he just said hey mandola gave Mandalorian right yeah it's not his name his name people are calling him mando though his last name is call rezian those boys mando Calrissian let's put it there I already said that joke twice actually if you heard it the first time I apologize alright so anyway back to wings man fantastic to answer your question yes I think it would be a great expansion for outer room one of the ourd work matches I would hate for it to be like chlorine tabs of course yeah no no no all right that would be cool wait spell number three yeah yeah that's how you stretch all right my number two this is a 1 versus No yeah and it's a cooperative game with a traitor element traitor element and that is obscure you coming up from lewd this here's a tremendously fun game and it could actually replace I did replace a couple of other games for me kind of it didn't really replace mysterium it definitely replace it replaced of that one hands-down that one is dead to me now I don't write I don't want to play that game anymore because you buried it I remember you went outside and buried it no I raised weird you know that we have that shed which we haven't shown for like a year and a half now with the carcasses of dead games yes and birds I deception murder in Hong Kong replaced mr. mysterion for me obscure yo hasn't really replaced deception murder in Hong Kong for me because it is threatening to know it's not threatening I think I can own both of these no yes I can't who's gonna allow that I can own when we back that truck tomorrow I find that there's a little bit too much space of it like I know what no obscurity oh it was just a great game and the the the reason that it differentiates itself from from deception burner Hong Kong is the art aspect you're doing basically the same thing with with deception but in obscurity oh it's artwork it's not you know words on a column right its artwork and that's what really differentiates it for me I don't like both of them and I think in different settings both will rise to the occasion and that's why I think you know both of them obscurity Oh was a great looking game and it has those magnetic little butterflies that are super cool and super I mean just basic I mean it's like one of those small changes to a game that just elevates it and it's great I really enjoyed this game a lot that's my number two real nice all right my number two is Tom said the rest of these are crossovers and my number two crossover is with Sam no really a plant system rising no I thought this was his number one I really did gonna be one or two I knew I was gonna be well I could my might have been the other way ten this is your number two yes that means your number one is no less yes my mind is blown a good year Atlantis rising second edition is one of the absolute well I mean it's one of my favorite games ever and that's obvious because it's a Santa boat and I have a lot of those and I think it takes a game I already enjoyed and improves on it every everywhere every aspect that touches that somehow changed was an improvement it's good I can't deny that that that's just the way it was so and then the artwork was better everything was just better and I really liked it so those in water on Sam Sam I already talked about it quite a bit it's just fantastic Ricky this is one of them be hanging on to for a long time and I'm gonna enjoy showing it off to two new folks coming into the Hobby or visiting and playing it and cooperating getting into it very such a cool theme to chase so my number two Atlantis rising second edition good pick my number two is the biggest most grandiose game on my list bigger than Kingston dilemma yeah and you've not played this and Sam played it for like a very short time tainted Grail Thank You grill yeah this is again I'm a huge fan of storytelling and the storytelling in this game is amazing I was not so sold on it because of the whole it's dark King Arthur Aryan legends and I prefer you know more shiny Excalibur style fluffy stuff but man the story is so good in this one and as you go through there's an interesting combat system and diplomacy system but as you go through and you find stuff and you get this choose your own adventure style makes what combat it's just a solid thing all around I really like it a lot it gets spooky in parts in a sense it has a neat I can't explain it had some music with some tab fools in it yes I like it this is a game that's gonna that's gotten a lot of buzz I mean everything from awakened realms does at this point time but I just I've really enjoyed this this might be my favorite game that they've made I have saved this one Wow yeah I like there I like all this stuff but this one is good and it feels as big as it is there's some streamlined it feels it use three mondays mm huh yeah I do and I like Ward's else a lot so it's cool tainted Grail my number two nice week finally number one yeah yeah I'm curious is this number one wonder if chat will be able to pick what my number one is you think alright Jack go ahead and guess I wonder I'm pretty sure they should but it's this has been in the making for some time now it's better not be the third edition of that warhammer miniature game right you can put in your list two years in a row and the third one came out this year No okay because I was sitting I was like he can't do that three years in a row I don't know what this could be this year what is he playing on you're gonna get attacks come up this year no or whatever that's called is in that brass for game no is it a miniatures game oh I know it is I know this know what it is well think about I can't say if I gave you the ghoul I was gonna get on no games that well from companies I don't follow that much oh the chat the chat has guessed it by a mile so has by a mile alright well I I was introduced to this game I think through I want to say almost between two and three years ago Top Gun strategy I played it and I was amazed by it we played the werewolf scenario of time of legends Joan of Arc that was my first introduction to it and I was just blown away by it I love the fact that they were taking this fantastical setting but it's based upon actual historical reports that the garrisons were getting from the peasantry of the of the Age about the legends and lore that they were spreading in amongst themselves and so the first scenario that we go into that's not a picture of the right scenario that's a screencap from the live play that we did when Sean Lukey was here and it was just an amazing I love this this the system of ordering it was just streamlined I loved everything about the game from the first time I played it and I got to play it a lot more after that you just at conventions because there wasn't a copy out and then I then was able to get a own copy of it and it's it's just great fun really enjoy this game a lot and I have been doing so for some time now so that's my number one time of Legends Joan of Arc nice all right what's my number one you know people want to guess now I guess not not anymore Empire's good you're good yes my number one is Imperial cellars empires of the North which I also read a 10 out of 10 I didn't I realize that again they might switch any other week because I really like both yeah there's also empires of the north is getting support past what's in the box those things keep a game fresh and coming back to the table you know so the Japanese factions great more content the Roman factions are coming out that's fantastic I'm sure things will continue to salsa no deck building in this one right no deck building just grab a deck and play and I like that a lot it is like tom said and he was not even expecting to like it no I was expecting like it I wasn't expecting to like it that much yeah sure it's a game that just feels like an evolution of something that I already really enjoyed with new concepts and it seems like like they took a long hard look at what was there and decided what to keep well not to keep what to change and those changes all feel very informed and smart I you know some of the main little tweaks to a system are just logical you know in the original game you would gather resources at the end of your turn anything you did not use would vanish why because mechanically that's what it was you needed it to be that way well now it doesn't now you keep stuff from one round to the next you also don't automatically mix too you need to go out and farm it or gather it those things just make the logical leap a little easier to deal with so good it's just absolutely fantastic I played this a ton this year taught it several times and it just works well I really have been having a blast with it so like I said a really good year imperial settlers empires of the north alrighty what do you got my number one is also a crossover you guys Sam called it much earlier and that is Clank legacy he called my top three I'm like yeah yeah they're all blank legacy I love legacy games in general this one is my favorite legacy game I've ever played I know I I've been a big fan of Clank anyway you like this better than pandemic I do you need to shut the front door that was almost racy that yeah I just I eat revenge I like the storyline which was really well-written I like the mechanisms I like the fact that now that we're done with the game I can still play it in fact I'd pick it over Clank yeah you know yeah it is and it's very playable it's like Clank with a couple expansions to run that at this point and it just it's fun it's it's a neat system and I just had a really great experience doing it throughout the year and it's that's why I think Penn demmick legacy I can't play again sure you guys wanna go back and play through it but I can't just sit there and play afterwards I know Rattus as you can but he's wrong so there's that in your face so there's a lot here's the thing folks there's a lot of great games that came out over the course of this year that we simply can't play a whole you know we can't play all these games or we can't put them all the top ten there's a lot of great games yeah Maracaibo I really liked it just didn't hit my top ten that's all but it doesn't mean it's bad right one game that a lot of people have been asking about my number 11 before you say last bastion yes some people ask about that but the one people ask about that they thought we would make a big deal back over this year and we barely mentioned is Batman huge Kickstarter came in so the answer that's pretty simple the rule book about it also we weren't sent it as a review copy so I mean I I backed it on the kick-starts how I got it so I didn't feel like we had to review it and everybody says that rule book is just that beast and a bear and then I went through it and lower than indeed it was so I just haven't got to it that's what I heard it's really fun if you can muddle through it the problem is we had hundreds of other games that were I didn't have to muddle through yeah sorry yeah if a game is hard to digest messy rule books badly laid out or formatted I'll pick one that isn't and play that and review that Oh awkward guests yeah I guess technically that came out last year it's always hard to determine wow that was reprinted but it was only in Spanish before I think much rule book yeah it's problem I didn't even think about that that's a problem we do these lists sometimes they have older day that feels like I'm not like a last year game but it's a very good game right you really like it death may die is the other one death may die is easy z played is gonna play it again I've played guys yeah we're playing next week as well so you want to come back Tuesday for that actually I've played it several times already so while I'm not gonna spoil necessarily everything I think about it yet I'm waiting to do a review of that it would not have made the top 10 list of the year there you go cloud spire I haven't played yet Marvel champions I'd like just not in my top 10 no tiny town same I mean really I could keep saying it for lots of different things fall of Rome people asked about Penn in it does that come up this year you were playing now you played it at PAX last year so had that come out and that's why did nobody let me come out this year no no no yes Rapid Response technically appendant top ten no no Rapid Response is fine my tapenade rapid response is a fine game for what it is but it's not a pandemic Oh journeys a middle-earth I liked a lot just to make my top ten yeah it was probably my top 20 I think it's a really fun game but we'll have a lot of good stuff this year a lot of games and a lot of well finalized games games that felt like they were coming from a mature industry at the top of its game you know what I mean which is why it makes that batman kickstarter look even worse there's tons of people out there no matter how big the in the company is or how small putting out games that are quality man they are whether you like them or not they are well finalized a lot of thought ones of the artwork the mechanisms the rule books well laid out put it on the table you can tell if a small company or a bit come funk company put this out so you know you got a sloppy rule book it's gonna hurt even more yeah all right well that's our top 10 from 2019 that's our last top 10 list this week in fact that's our last group top 10 list this year actually though it's Sam's last top-10 list for a while yep if you haven't caught the news on the 6,000 different times we've announced it Sam is leaving the dice now he's backing up a truck on tomorrow yeah-ha tomorrow so we got to integral part of it we've seen you since West Texas con so many years ago and you're just a bright spot and since you're already long distance well we just have another excuse to try to find you and think about Sam Healy he's become a very close friend of mine in the past couple of years I also want to thank Tom if not for the dice tower I wouldn't have met Sam Haley he would and I wouldn't have become fast friends it wouldn't be in the massive amount of that I'm in but all joking aside on a more serious note for Sam to be leaving it's like it's like Voltron you know missing an arm I love your brother I hate that you're leaving but really you're never really gone hello Sam I wanted to let you know that well you will be missed you won't be forgotten the beautiful thing about this hobby and about this community is being able to share a table and a love for gaming and generate long lasting memories and you've been able to do that with thousands of people the world over and myself realized with the same interest in gaming and then he followed me I remember logging time on your computers in your room because that's what he did he had the only like fast computer on the entire hall and he said that you could come use his computer but you had to log your time playing Star Wars oh whatever it was I set it up so I don't want anyone to hog the computer so you got like a limit of like it 2 hours a day or something so I like there's a say I'm Hailie button you want to use my computer the most so huh wasn't me it wasn't you but you were second um Matt Matt Matt was the most yes no but look Sam was there in Korea Sam has been with me for a long time our kids have known each other their whole lives practically well no not practically they have definitely um Sam was there you know as he mentioned through our dark times through yeah some really dark times for me and so there's things you don't know about Sam okay Sam is the nicest guy here when it comes to meeting people outside you know I might meet somebody and I'm like whatever this person's a pain in neck and Sam will be nice to them when the rest of us may not Sam will stop and talk to people and like we have to to move and Sam will be really nice people he will he doesn't talk to people and give to people that the rest of us will not and by the rest of us I mean people yeah yeah you know he's a very caring person now no ever pretend just like any group of people that everything is always peaches and cream all the way through right but I will say that when the cameras turn off here and we're done if we don't instantly go no in fact I'm kind of glad the cameras were off before we start here we were talking about using the force we have a lot of goofy laughs around here so yeah it's gonna be weird right now but it's not a bad thing right I don't want people to ever think that like we're not you know force exam to go at all this is he's in the other corner of the country literally the other corner of the country wanted he is far away from you you can went to Alaska I know that's true I could have he actually seems glad to be going to cold weather I do I do not like hot weather I do not like it at all I want my seasons so and which is weird because I grew up in Texas and there's not really seasons there I mean more than here but sure I think when living in Germany is what really This illustrates why the dice Tower is good, particularly with the three of them. Very diverse range of opinions and games with very little overlap in top games. A lot of other channels seem to be more of an echo chamber of narrower similar interests and sometimes is harder to tell how it will appeal to those of different mindsets.

I used to think my gaming tastes aligned more with Zee, but really I like most games that Sam picks. So I'm bummed he's leaving.
