Not to be a sore loser, but if this post doesn't get nuked like my last two on this subject I'm going to be unreasonably mad.

The good thing about the dev kit thing is that you just need to sign up as a developer for 25 dollars. After that, you are allowed to run unsigned code which these emulators are. Every retail Xbox series is it's own dev kit.

So, the mini PC with a locked down W10, can be pretty much unlocked (at least for select programs) with a 25$ fee? And shit is legal too?

Considering the state of the PC market right now, this ain't half bad

Oh God. Smash Tournaments just experienced a whole new schism of dogma.

Wonder if the mods will nuke this one too like the other times people have tried to share this.

This is legit really impressive to see and played a big role in me going for a Series X. I'm gonna play the crap out of all the Pokemon games I missed once I load up a drive with ISOs.

NGL, this is pretty dope.

Can confirm. I own an Xbox Series S and being able to emulate just about everything is awesome!

thanks to amaze for sponsoring this video more on them later no what you're seeing here is not fake this is actually super mario galaxy running straight off of my xbox honestly the series s is surprisingly great at emulation especially for the cost i believe that the series s is the best buy in tech right now you can make for 300 best part is none of this is illegal it does a voyager warranty and it's completely endorsed by microsoft themselves let me show you how it works okay so if you manage to somehow get one this tiny little drive through speaker manages to house almost every single generation of gaming want to play your old copy of need for speed underground but don't want to plug in your old ps2 you got it what about literally any of the old pokemon games sure how about playing smash bros melee in 4k with three of your friends on the same system do you hate yourself well if you do all of this and more is possible with this tiny little xbox so how does this work well microsoft has been generous enough to give any xbox the ability to have a dedicated developer sandbox if you don't know what that means it basically means you can run homebrew programs and other stuff all without having to mod or hack your xbox one of those programs that you can run on it is retroarch which if you don't know by now is a front end for a bunch of the most popular emulators to play all the retro games that you want from gamecube to ps2 to ps1 anywhere from dreamcast to meme nintendo wii pretty much anything that you want is playable using retromark so let me show you exactly what's possible with the new generation of consoles i'm gonna quickly run you through how you can do this yourself and then show you how the games run and let me tell you the results here are really impressive but first let's talk about our sponsor omaze these guys are giving you twenty thousand dollars to build your perfect pc and you can treat yourself to some of the top-of-the-line gear from monitors to cpus gpus and all the ram you could ever need whether it's for gaming graphic design or even working from home all you have to do is enter for a chance to win every omaze campaign supports a great cause and in this case it's an awesome charity called gamers outreach they provide recreation to children in hospitals through the power of video games and the gaming community being hospitalized especially at a young age can be a very lonely and a very scary experience which is why it's so great that gamers outreach helps bring joy to these kids with their medical grade gaming kiosks your donation can help ease the burdens of hospitalized children by providing equipment technology and software that helps kids with these long-term treatments to support gamers outreach and potentially win that prize worth twenty thousand dollars go to omaze.com jeff that link is gonna be in the description below once again that's omaze.com jeff and thanks again to omaze for sponsoring today's video alright so how do i get this thing set up well it's a bit of a tricky process but i'll go over the big details here first we start on the store you search up dev mode in the search bar and we click on the picture with the speaker in the fridge on it all right it's ready let's open it up you're gonna keep hitting next until you get to this screen all right write this code down somewhere on a computer let's go to the website that was on the screen that's aka dot ms slash activate xbox i'll leave it in the description for you right by the like button which i'd appreciate it if you clicked are you going to sign into your xbox slash microsoft account and scroll down to the xbox section click get started and then sign up now all right now this is where you can submit your information for a developer account now this does cost 20 i want to let you know right now but in my opinion it's totally worth it as for the company name i've noticed it literally doesn't matter what you put there just use your gamer tag plus games yeah that sounds official fill out the rest of your stuff you know what name address favorite ice cream flavor stuff like that and you're done you're officially an xbox developer all right let's go to that url one more time aka dot ms slash activate xbox now what you should see is a dashboard where you can manage your xboxes or xbox xy i don't know anyways from here you can go to the plus sign on the right then type in the code that's on your xbox and your xbox is activated cool all right go ahead and restart your xbox once it's rebooted you'll be greeted to this new developer ui that url on the bottom right we can use to start loading programs on it back to your browser type it in now some browsers might tell you the connection is unsafe just click visit website anyways alright now here is where we can install stuff remotely onto your xbox first we need to get the retroarch app so google retroarch or just go in my description and download these two files now we can go click add and start installing the program drag in the retract file hit next then drag in the microsoft dependencies then hit start at this point it'll start installing to your xbox and you should see a new icon up here ah there he is hit select on the icon and be sure to change the setting to game that way it'll know how to use all of its graphics powers alright congrats you've officially installed retroarch from here you just want to update a few things scroll down to the online updater and let's update the core info files assets and controller profiles right back all the way out then hit right on the d-pad select drivers video and then change that to d3d12 or opengl all right back to the very first menu we're going to scroll down to the configuration file then save current configuration let's quit out a retro work once you relaunch it now you should see the menu the way it's supposed to be seen and you're done retro work is pretty much ready to go kind of reminds me a bit of the ps3 xmb but what do you think from here there's various tutorials out there that can branch off too and there's usually one for whatever you want to play so if you want to play gamecube there's a tutorial for setting up gamecube if you want to play ps2 the tutorial for setting up ps2 and etc arcade's games has a bunch of tutorials on any console you could want to run and this video would not have been possible without him so i'll leave some link in the description to some of his videos to help you get started and let him know that i sent you now that we've installed retroarch and got it running properly let's take a look at some games i hope you can understand i can't tell you how to get these games yourself as there are some legality issues in the way there so right off the bat any games from nes super nintendo sega genesis era will run flawlessly you know as expected at this point i'm pretty sure these games could run on a shoe if you try hard enough for reference i found some numbers that might be useful for you in case you were wondering the entire nes library takes up about 230 megabytes the entire snes library takes about 1.5 the entire sega genesis collection takes about 750 megabytes and the entire nintendo 64 library is about four gigs but you could probably get away with less than this since i feel like not every single game from this generation is worth re-downloading and playing the emulators on this app also have really nice shaders so you can make them look extra crispy or vintage or just make it nicer to play with here's shining force running with a crt shader on one of my favorite genesis games i know some people hate this look i personally like it so i'm just glad it's an option you can also use retroarch to run rom hacks if you're into that sort of thing uh here's god of war for the nes who asked for this nintendo 64 runs 95 of the time really really well the other five percent you just get this weird artifacts like the text not looking right not much to say about the system really other than just personally i feel like this era didn't age the best it's kind of jarring to switch back to these graphics after playing new games for so long and the whole one joystick thing just really makes you appreciate modern controllers but yeah it works sega rally championship my buddy george on instagram asked me to see how sega saturn runs on this since i know it's particularly difficult for some reason for emulators to run this at full speed and i'm happy to resort it's perfect no slowdowns everything looks great i didn't have any luck upscaling this one unfortunately but at native resolution it still looks really good while on the subject since they're mostly the same era ps1 also runs flawlessly upscaling definitely helps a lot and overall it's just really good okay psp is probably my favorite console to run on this xbox because i personally feel the gains on this platform have the perfect middle point in between they're old enough for people to feel nostalgic for them but knew enough that the graphic style aged really gracefully since sony decided to pretend that their past consoles don't exist the best place to play these now is ironically on xbox here's me playing daxter i let this kid from church borrow it when i was like seven years old and i never saw it again so aaron if you're watching this don't you dare think i forgot anyway some notable things about this console is that its native resolution at the time was 272p which just does not hold up in 2021. fortunately you could boost the internal render resolution to make it look much more playable i've had luck with 5x internal resolution with 2400 by 1360 but it tends to crash any higher than that but i still think it looks really good here's a comparison it's basically a night and day difference but what do you think another quirk of the psp is that there's no dual joysticks at the time so developers would just set the camera controls to the l and the r triggers which was a bit of a wonky solution fortunately retract lets you rebind these controls on your xbox controller to the right joystick and it just makes playing these games that much more enjoyable i really think this is my favorite console to play on my xbox so that smash clip in the beginning of the video i was just making sure you were paying attention okay so let's talk gamecube so here's melee actually running on the xbox uh ninety percent of the time it runs perfectly and it looks really good upscaled but there are some hitches when you're going between menus no idea why if you're looking to play any of the old games from the sixth generation of consoles gamecube is probably going to be your best bet because of the compatibility like need for speed underground 2 just would not run on ps2 it was way way too laggy same with a couple of other games that i tried like tony hawk's pro skater 4 but gamecube get random at full speed and up res to a modern resolution also since gamecube evaluation is running off the dolphin core that means you can also run wii games i'm not gonna lie there are some compatibility issues with wii some games have slow downs and other games for no reason at all just won't launch but when it works man it is awesome some games need to be readjusted to be played with an xbox controller though like mario galaxy i have the right stick assigned to the nunchuck to pick up stars and stuff and some games will just never work on the xbox like wii sports i mean good luck playing that on an xbox controller but basically any of the good games that you want to play like metroid or wind waker or twilight princess will run perfectly fine on this thing and lastly ps2 i'll be honest ps2 at the moment isn't perfect but it's getting there and with the public release of the pcsx2 core for retrowork it's getting there much faster than i expected but it's nowhere near ready for major compatibility the weirdest thing for me is that it's inconsistent god of war 1 runs fine but god of war 2 was completely unplayable some games run ok but some games don't even boot and there are a lot of bugs with the emulator itself sometimes it'll just destroy itself for some reason it's so weird but when it works man it's a dream stuff like gran turismo 4 runs mostly at full speed with upscaling and ratchet and clank size matters runs perfectly in 16x9 at 1440p uh at the time of this video there's currently a bug where any ps2 game with vibration in it just makes the controller vibrate constantly at full strength and the solution right now is just to disable it entirely so uh there's no vibration on ps2 games right now so those are most of the major consoles but uh what else i want to say oh okay you can play ds games on here uh don't know why you'd want to do that but you could do it there's upscaling too and everything you just have to reconfigure the touchscreen to the right joystick but after that you're good also if you're worried about running out of space on your xbox for your games good news your games can be loaded up onto an external hard drive and be played from there but any games bigger than two gigabytes need to be copied onto the internal storage otherwise they won't run there's also netplay support on retroarch and from what i've heard it actually works on your xbox so you can play games like smash online with your friends but i didn't get a chance to test it in time let me know if you'd like to see a video playing retro games online also my favorite thing about this is that it's non-destructive and it doesn't affect the rest of your xbox at all since they're two completely different modes whenever you're done playing your emulated games you just hit leave dev mode and it'll boot you right back into your number one xbox you can go from playing smash playing forza halo within minutes it's awesome and because i know someone's gonna ask no it's very unlikely microsoft will ban your online account for this since you did pay for the license and that's why i feel like the xbox series s is like the most insane deal right now in gaming you get all the retro consoles you know gamecube wii psp ps1 combine that with all the next gen titles coming out and the massive library xbox one games and 360 backwards compatibility and original xbox background compatibility that's just an insane amount of value for 300 and that's not even mentioned in the massive library on game pass let me ask you what retro games are you long gonna just revisit and play again after all these years i personally love being able to play need for speed underground 2 again it was my favorite racing game as a kid leave a like on the video if you found this useful or entertaining and if your name is aaron i want my copy of daxter back you absolute freeloader i will find you
