Things movies and games get wrong about gas masks

before I'd do a video about all the things movies and games get wrong about gas masks I want to say all the things this is just gonna be a few things this will go on and on and on and on but this is like when you watch your film or play a game when there's somebody wearing a gas mask the things or respirator the things the films get wrong a lot the time so the first one is this is obviously exclusive to games or like non live-action things because we've live-action they might realize they're doing a mistake it's when the filter is sealed at the bottom and somebody's wearing it and they're apparently breathing absolutely fine I know in Call of Duty 4 that happened where the Russian guys when you play multiplayer and singleplayer if you look too closely at a model you'll see the GP fives got a plug in it at the bottom the only guy who's breathing from it fine so just to quickly demonstrate what happens if you try and use a gas mask with a plug on the filter I can't breathe so happens you suffocate to death because no air can get into the mask so that's one thing now this is one you see most commonly on movies and it's one the ones that really really irritates me somebody's wearing a gas mask especially if it's in a contaminated environment and there's no filter on the masks in a mask you know does nothing except physically protect your face but it won't do anything to stop gas getting in but you're watching a movie some guy the gas masks on no filter on the mask is done there's clouds of gas everywhere Ivor there's no filter on so how was it filtering gas it can't so that's probably the most common one I see in loads of movies if those guys are gas masks if you look carefully you'll notice a I'm got filter on it or whatever else people keep saying to me where do they get prop filters for movies they normally don't if you just don't have filters on the mask or they're using the real filter and sometimes this is really stupid like you have a thing well let's not believe an industrial mask on and it's like it was a free I'm dust mask but they can even be bothered to get particular filters so you end up you know having films are you meant to take it seriously but obviously it'd be like if you're watching a war film basically and there with no magazines and anybody's guns but they had all the shooting effects and you think I'll they're shootin there's the Maguire's empty is the exact same thing but of a gas mask mostly they do not function if you don't have the filter on it another one I don't know if I can really show this on video but I want to try and do it if you get a first-person scene in a movie where somebody's wearing a gas mask and it looks coming to like that where you see through the lenses let me see if I can just pull any strap back but the problem is the human eye does not see like that when you are a gas mask so as much as it's a camera effect it probably looks cool it's not a realistic portrayal of what a gas mask looks like for the simple reason that there we go so that's like in your film you're looking for the gas mask and it looks like that because they're like all doesn't it look cool showing the ice mask on the camera you know if it looks something like that that's how you see me through it if that was in the film um so yeah the problem is that the human eye if you look for a gas mask does not see like that you are I'm sure you can you can do this experiment yourself even if you have a gas mask what you need to do is get your hand and hold in front of your face now if you put in front of one eye so you close one eye you can't see you can you see your hand if you do if they ever I can obviously see fine but your hand takes at that part your vision if you have both eyes open your hand sort of a phantom hand because you can partially see through it because one eye is seeing you know through it the ever risen so the brain can corrects it so when you're in a gas mask and it's got like a thing between the eyes you don't actually see that you kind of see a ghost of it and the only game I think I've played which has first-person gas smells gonna did it correctly as further done and that's the world one shooter when you're wearing that around the outside you can't see anything around the Alpha CDI pieces you can see fine and then dab it in the middle like that you actually have like the ghosting effect is completely realistic of what it actually looks like to look for a gas mask that's another thing that you know how many times you see a first person thing in a film or a game so we have gas mostly for the castle or something all their visions like this are looking for binoculars that how many Zuma limits like that's not how it works because your eyes can see more than just you know if one ice blocks the other eyes open you get a ghost image of what's behind the other right your brain is very good at doing stuff like that so there's lots of other things like that the other ones as well sort of this is more like a chemical weapon finger say there's a nerve gas or something in a film or game somebody's wearing a gas mask of an NBC salon they're absolutely fine maybe don't even have a filter on it either because you know the laziness of these things but you know they often are absolutely fine if there's been a chemical weapon thing well or not another one this is kind of something that's really irritates me is if you're watching a disaster film where there's an airborne virus and they know it's an airborne virus how often the scientists or soldiers not wearing gas masks what you think that would completely stop the outbreak spreading because if they go into a contaminated area and they've got all the NBC gear on the gas mask they'd be absolutely fine but they're normally just you know in their normal sort of soldier uniforms and then like oh no somebody got infected blood on me or I breathe something in now we're spreading and that's a plot convenience point miss another irritating thing you think if you had a thing like that it would be done you know I watched a film I can't remember his cordon this is going to irritate me it was a kind of a crappy 80s film but in some ways it was good because it was like when those horror films are characters to all the right decisions so they send you know guys hazmat suits in and contain the area and then they get killed by let people wielding axes and things but after that they're basically like always sealing off and basically gonna kill everyone inside and it surprised me because you know it seemed right you know most those films they always do everything possible to spread the contamination this one they didn't know if I think about I'll mention it at some point but I'm sure I'm gonna forget now but yeah in general that's a lot of the things that they get wrong about gas loss there's more if I think I work harder that I remember but the one with even no filters or clogged filters really irritates me and I said once where people are in an environment where the gas masks even would or wouldn't work and they're not using it simply because I think the one that noise when a soldiers aren't wearing gas masks is you know nearly all soldiers that issued of gas masks as part of their equipment and then you have some sort of outbreak his neo contamination pandemic movie and the soldiers aren't wearing it you think if they're issued of gas masks with NBC or CBN and to be being biological they would think to wear the gas masks to protect themselves but no they never do so there you go that's the stupid things movies get wrong about gas masks you
