the problem is too that alot of chemical weapons and Nerve agents are skin reactive. so you would need they whole MOPP suit. which is only good for so long once its removed from packaging. not to mention the filters need to be changed out often in contaminated environments.

I thought I'd make a video as a gas mask collector about the types of masks on the surplus market, and what would be useful against NBC threats as well as tear gas etc. There seems to be a lot of misinformation around with all masks being equal/ as well as misinformation on certain masks not working.

Hopefully, this video is helpful to anyone thinking of getting a gas mask.

I bought myself 2 GSR gasmasks with nato filters. I have older GS 10 ones but I really don't trust em enough.

My problem with these tests/recommendations is always that the filters take a backseat.

For teargas you obviously don't need a full blown gas mask, yet that's about the only thing the filters will stop after their shelf-life ended.

Just get an n95 or better disposable mask. It is much less ridiculous looking and blends in with the crowds. Because anything worse, you'll discover you're still contaminated due to skin and clothes exposure.

N95 mask and get to high ground. Most gas agents are heavier than O2. Hiding in your basement will get you killed in a gas attack. Lessons from WW1.

this is a video for all the Preppers out there because there's a lot of misinformation regarding gas masks and it's about what sort of gas masks to get and what thought to avoid so we'll start off with the ones to avoid and needs a cheek filter mask now the problem with cheek filter mask is that it's sort of an outdated design so nowhere makes new filters for them as far as I'm aware and you can't change the filters easily so you have to take the mask off to do it breaking the seal which could be dangerous and like I said you can't get new good filters for it so the Russian TBF on the left and a check M 10m on the right which is sort of a clone different version of the USM 17 basically most the mask will look similar to that because that's what the USM 17 look like and what these marks are clone from the idea is that you have two filters that sit in each cheek the idea being with two filters you can breathe more easily and they're more compact in a canister filter the problem is you can't change the filter easily you have to take the mask off to change the filter which obviously using good news if you're in and sort of a gas sort of scenario and because these masks are sort of a discontinued design it means that you can't get new filters for them so you can't get you know anything that would actually protect you or has a good chance protecting you the next type of mask to avoid although there are some exceptions are sixty millimeter masks we have on the left a Canadian c3 on the right of Finnish m61 which is a clone of the American m9 mask now 16 millimeter filters look like this they've got big wide filter ports there's a filter on the right but sealed you can still buy lots of these very cheaply sealed as you can see on that one this was one pound fifty to buy from an army surplus for a sealed filter dated in the 80s not too bad however that probably from it's a draw protects against I think more than teargas lots of these masks are still functional and still make airtight seal from everything but the issue is that the 16 millimeter filters nobody actually makes anymore as far as I'm aware so once you go beyond a certain date probably about 1990 you can't get the filters that fit these masks so you're basically limited to all filters stock so what you can do has two things you can do you can either all see not use one of these masks or what you can get is a sixty to forty millimeter converter which is a bit of plastic or metal that screws in there one end being sixty millimeter be around being a narrower forty millimeter port and that will let you put modern filters on it so what Mar should you get them well this type so the type of mask I'd recommend of forty millimeter masks that's the modern standard type on the right left we have a Russian mask on the right we have a NATO mask now there's a slight difference I use a slightly different 40 millimeter filter port but you should be able to get both types of filters to fit on both masks of a bit of effort the Russian ones known as Goths filters or gos t the nato type is known as stanag i believe but basically it's just the filter screws are slightly different we should be able to get both filters into both masks that being said that the NATO filter i've got fitted to GP v the reason that is is up until probably the fall of the soviet union there are questions raised about how safe the russian filters are they stopped officially using asbestos in the small canister filters after I think it was 1972 however there can be traced of asbestos in them some filters are still confirmed type of asbestos after that and some it sort of like there might be some in there due to manufacturing defects factory quotas all that sort of stuff so best not to use Russian filters that are modern so that's a 40 millimeter c2 filters some people consider them unsafe I personally don't so that's an old Soviet gp5 very primitive mask very cheap mask forget however as long as the seals are in fact I let the mask will still work for a modern philtrum and it will filter gas properly very primitive but it works here we have an Avon FM 12 or CT 12 I would say very very good masks one of the favourite masks I have in my collection you can swap the filter to either side by taking a secondary diaphragm sort of plug off and you can see install till today so 40 millimeter filters here's a sealed Israeli wonders if it doesn't sit on my shelf and then sealed see it that sealed I think there is a date on here yep 2008 so filters have a shelf life of about 10 years when the sealed same as a mask in theory for military use and so this filter should in theory still be good to go obviously I'd get more than one spare filter but when a filter expires it doesn't immediately stop working and expired still so basically just won't necessarily give you a full Mountain protection however I found things like tear gas gets stopped by even really old sort of filters sort of the same as an industrial mask would stop it filters have two layers activated charcoal which you can't have shaking in this because it's also nice in tacks and compressed you have one layer that the activated charcoal that neutralizes some of the gases through adsorption where the sort of poison particles will stick to the charcoal clean air carries on through and a particulate filter that can be anything like fiberglass asbestos from older masks and that sort of stuff and that's just designed to lonely let small molecules freak through so basically oxygen can get through but lots of other masks you things can't so because the some of the bits the filter lasts longer than other bits even old filters can give you some protection from some things but not other things so that's my advice if you're a propagating a mask don't spend loads and loads of money don't you know believe all these cons what you should do is ideally get yourself a 40 millimeter mask or if there's a 16 millimeter mask you really like get one with a converter and then stack up on loads of in good condition forty millimeter canisters get some filters to open and you know try out using the masks with checkles seals are working and then use some obviously keep some filters sealed so that you've got one in case of anything bad happening but in general 40 millimeter masks are the best because of the fact that you can still get new filters to them very easily and they just simply screw on to a section of the mask which is very simple to obviously put them on my cheek filters
