- Practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice... - Practice... Did you guys hear a series of quick practice or a long practice? This is a sound illusion. - You should be doing both of them. - Eddy: Whoa! Whoa! Today, we're going to be watching different sound illusions. It's basically like that, um, - is this dress blue or yellow thing - Yeah, yeah, yeah. but for sound, right? It's pretty cool, actually. We found a few different ones and wanted to get tripped out together with you guys. Okay so, the first one is called I've actually heard about this before, but it's pretty cool. - Let's listen to it. - "Video and audio can have psychological effects." - Oh, there's a warning, dude. - Dude, am I ready for this? I don't know if I want to. I'm so confused. - Whoa! - Dude! Alright, I'm getting dizzy now. - That's so weird. - Yeah. It just doesn't stop, like the tone just keeps rising and it never comes down. But obviously, it's an illusion. - Because your ears can't keep going in the frequency. - Yeah. If it keeps going higher, you're not going to hear it. - Yes. - Yeah. So, I believe the way it's, like, achieved is like, there's different octaves, right? As it climbs up, the higher pitch gets softer and then the lower pitch gets louder so it's like it's transitioning. And so it's this kind of... Your ears get the illusion that it keeps going up. Apparently, they used it in, um, Dunkirk. - Hans Zimmer. - I can kind of imagine that. The soundtrack had this feeling of like... It's like, this never-ending suspense. It makes you feel anxious too. I reckon it would drive someone crazy. Like imagine you put someone in a room and they're forced to listen to that 24/7. - Oh, no way. - Eddy: Dude, that would... - You'd go crazy. You'll go crazy. - You will go insane. Yeah. Alright, the next one is called the Not the reset rhythm. The Risset. It's a similar concept to Shepard tone, except with rhythm. So it's like it always keeps getting faster. That's going to be so trippy. Ben Lee was like, "If you can play it slowly, you can play it quickly." Well, Risset Rhythm's like, if you can play it quickly, you can keep playing more quickly. - And even more quickly and it never... Yeah. - It never ends. Two, three, four. One, two, three, four. But doesn't it stop? Eddy: One, two, three, four. One, two, three, four. Brett: One, two, three, four. One, two, three, four. - One, two, three... It's getting faster! - One, two, three, four. One, two, three, four. (Both) One, two, three, four. It is getting faster. One, two, three, four. Ooh! That's so trippy! - Ooh, you just reset, right? - Yeah. Maybe that's why it's the Reset Rhythm. It gets so fast and then before you notice it, it kind of just... You just double your time, like your subdivisions. So, you can literally start anywhere in this. One, two, three, four. One, two, three, four. One... One, two, three, four. One, two, three, four. - Aw, that's so trippy. - One, two... So you just need a break - Yeah. - and your tempo changes straight away. Next one is Try to guess the melodies from the scrambled notes. You're going to hear a mysterious melody. A well-known tune where all of the notes are correct, but they've been scattered randomly across three different octaves. See if you can identify what these well-known tunes are before hearing the normal version. Here we go. Ode to Joy. It's quite tricky, isn't it? - Nah. It wasn't tricky. - "Here is an unscrambled version of the same melody." Wait, is that Ode to Joy? I forgot. - Yeah. Yeah, yeah. - Okay, it is. Freaked out for a second there. And now if we listen to the scrambled version again, it will be actually quite obvious what the tune is. - Nah, it was already obvious, bro. - Dude. - Was it obvious for you? - Yeah, like... I think it does help once you play the - Ode to Joy melody then you show the scrambled. - Yeah. But it's... I mean it wasn't that tricky. Yeah. But it seems like it was more obvious for you. - We're musically educated. - Yeah, so. - So we're different. We're built different. - You ain't fooling us. Yeah, we're built different. - All those aural lessons weren't for nothing. - Yeah. - Let's see if there's another one. - Okay. - "And now." - Ooh. What is that again? It's like some folk song. Practice and if you don't go... Nah. I think that's what it was, right? I don't know, I got lost. - Actually, can we play it again? - Yeah. - Yeah. - Yeah. - I can see why it would throw you off though. - "And for the" - Yeah. That was harder. - "unscrambled version." - That was hard. - I think so. Once again, it's Diana Deutsch who has done research into this auditory illusion. She draws an analogy with the brain's visual system. - When you first see this picture- - Oh. What do you think this picture is? Okay. I don't see anything. It looks like a garden with leaves. - And then... Yeah. - That's what... A bunch of leaves, right? A tree and... - Yeah, like a tree there. - There's like a tree there. Yeah. - Okay, are they going to make it trippy now? - It seems... meaningless. Just a lot of black blobs on a white background. But once I suggest what the picture is of - your brain will start to fill in the gaps and it will- - Oh. What if it's a cheetah? Nah, it's not a cheetah. Wait, let me try and figure out what he's gonna say. There's a dog. - Yeah, I wanna guess it before he says it. - There's a dog, there's a dog! - Is it? Where's the dog? - It's a dog sniffing. I can see the dog. - Oh yeah, there's a dog, you're right. The dog's... - Do you see the dog? There's a dog sniffing. - sniffing in the garden. - Yeah, yeah. There's a dog. Yeah. - We're built different. - Yeah. - It's called the sight-reading skills. - Yeah. TwoSet Violin built different. We'll be able to recognize it for what it really is. - Tell me what it is. - It is a dog. Here's the moment of truth. The picture is of a dalmatian dog. Yeah, of course. Illusion my a**, man. We see through sh**. Yeah, it was alright. I'm more impressed by the first two. - They mess with your head. - Yeah. - The Shepard tone and the Risset Rhythm. - The Risset's a bit crazy. - Alright, we need earphones for this one, apparently. - Oh, my god, earphones. The octave illusion, let's go. What's supposed to happen? I'm going first, by the way. Alright, 'cause we need earphones so we're just gonna... Brett's gonna listen to it first and then I'll listen to it. - What's happening? - "Welcome to auditory illusion." Wow, I can't hear it. It's just... It's not playing. This illusion's called the Bluetooth doesn't work. You're going to need a pair of headphones. I'm going to play you thirty seconds of audio and as you listen think carefully about how you would describe the sounds that you're hearing. After the audio is finished, I'll tell you what the seven most common responses are, that is descriptions of the sound. I have to describe it and he's going to tell me the seven most common ways of describing it. I'm hearing octaves. Okay. Now what? - Yeah, I get it. - So, there we go. - That was the audio. - Yeah. How would you describe the pattern that you just heard? - Octaves. - "The most common description" is that there's a high tone in one ear going on and off and there's a low tone in the other ear going off and then on. - Following on from this - Yeah. right-handed people tend to place the high-pitched tone - in their right ear no matter which- - Oh, that's messed up. Wait, actually? Alright, and then? Left-handed people won't have a consensus on which side the high tone appears to be. I want to listen. - Okay. Okay, okay. You listen to it now. - I need to listen. I have no idea what you're talking about. - Yeah. - I can't tell what I'm listening to. - But you hear octaves, right? - Yeah, but is it... (hums) Or is it... (hums) I heard... (hums) That slow? Yeah. I don't hear that. I just hear... (hums) I don't hear... - Yo... That is trippy. Yeah, I hear that. - Do you actually... No, no, do you actually hear that? Do you hear (hums) Well, I hear (high note) and (low note) but sometimes it switches ears. I just hear, like, octaves going... I can hear... tell something switching but I don't hear either ear being higher or lower. It's like... But it's not obvious which one is high, which is low, at what time. The effect is just I'm hearing octaves, repeated. So, what do you hear? I hear... I hear it higher in my right ear. - Moreso on this ear. - And the higher one you only hear on the offbeats. Yes. So then on the downbeat, your right ear doesn't hear much at all. It's your left ear. Bro, I don't have that. What the f***? It's definitely moving. Yeah. - You hear the moving, right? Okay, no, I... I'm... - I can hear it moving. I don't know. I'm thinking if I can sync it up now. Yeah? I can hear it move but I can hear a... Yeah, I don't hear any of that... - Really? - Nah. - Dude, my ears are messed up. - If anything... It sounds like G and a flat G, like... - If anything, it... - Dude... That's trippy. Dude, what...? I'm just built different. Perfect pitch people hear it as it is. Apparently, the tritone paradox is some people hear it going up and some people going down. Now, apparently, how you hear it will be the same as your father and mother. Oh la la, I don't know, It's some crazy, like, nature/nurture hereditary thing, I don't know. But let's hear. Up. Up. - Oh, you heard up as well, right? - Yeah. Oi, Vanya, do you hear up or down? - Yeah, yeah. It went up. - Yeah, it went up. Dude, this isn't a paradox. - There's no paradox here. - No paradox here. Alright, nah, next. Let's go. Whoa! Bro... Dude... - Holy sh... - That's freaky. - It's like some alien AI talking to us - Dude. through a piano. AI pianos are taking over, oh, my god. Wait. But I wanna like... See, if you close your eyes, right? You don't hear the words anymore. - Yeah, it's just like... - It sounds like a lot of notes. You can hear the keys and they're moving up and down. But if you look at the words. - You can hear the words. - A hundred percent. That's insane. - So the eyes and ears needs to come in sync somehow. Yeah. - Yeah. Vanya, what do you...? Can you hear the words, Vanya? - Were you listening? - Yeah, he wasn't... - He said nope, in case you guys didn't hear it. - Yeah. Yeah, no, you can't. No, I don't believe you. I mean, maybe, if you're like, uh... - Maybe, yeah. - Maybe it's like the Matrix, - Yeah, yeah. We're in an illusion right now. - and this person's just hacking the system. Dude... Dude, that's... What if this real world is an illusion? What if we live in a simulation and this is all fake? - Are you guys real? - Can we... Yeah, touch... Hello. Can you touch us? It doesn't matter because I don't care if it's an illusion or not. You're not practicing. Illusions don't save your intonation. Yeah. It's like, if I'm in a simulation, can't my simulation at least play in tune? So tragic. Alright, cool. That's enough illusions for today. - Bye. - Bye-bye.
