Hello, welcome back to another episode of TwoSet Violin. There you go. Recently we did a video where we reviewed some adult violin beginners, and their progress, and it was very impressive. But today, we are going to be reviewing the progress videos of... ...young kid beginners. Young. Yeah. How young? Like fetus prodigy level young. I mean, it does seem like... ...these Ling Lings are being created younger and younger these days, but let's have a look. I'm guessing it means the first two years of her learning the violin, and not that she was playing the violin at 0 years old. - Yeah.
- That'll be pretty messed up. But, let's see. She started at 2 years and 8 months old. Wow...! Oh my god, she's tiny. Wow... And that's a 1/16 violin. The cutest, small little thing I've seen in my life. Dude, her rhythm is like on point already. - Yeah, she's got rhythm!
- Yeah. It's hard to teach rhythm. - Trying to explain it to people, with young...beginners.
- Uh-huh. She's not getting shaky bow. - She's not nervous at all.
- She's not... - So comfortable on stage.
- She's like, "Don't know what's going on, but I learned this." Yeah. Dude! She was three?! Yeah, 3 years old. But, she could play so... ...comfortably. And like the fact that she's looking around, - that's how comfortable she is with it.
- Yeah. Fourth finger!!! (both) Ohh...!!! - Dude, that's more solid than my fourth finger.
- Yeah...! Now slurs. Oh, she did it! And she's playing by memory! Oh yeah...! I just loved how she's using like her whole bow, - Yeah.
- and then she's able to like, adjust when she hits a neighbouring string. - You can see her like, adjust.
- Mm-hmm. I can't wait to see what she sounds like - on a bigger violin.
- Yeah. Because 1/16 violins can't really make a good sound - anyway, right?
- Yeah. - You can hear like, it's just limited by the instrument.
- Yeah. You should check out our video, - where we played on like 1/16 or 32 violins.
- Oh, yeah. - Oh, yeah! Yeah!!!
- You'll see what we mean, yeah. Double up bows...! Slurs... Dude, she's three, I haven't even started learning violin at that point. I didn't even have a consciousness when I was three! - I probably couldn't even like walk or talk.
- Yeah I was like, - "Wahhhh! I'm hungry!"
- So I was like— (both) Ohh!!! What a flex! The Witch's Dance! Dude! It's your favourite piece. That bow technique though! She's learned the, the hook stroke. Down, down up, up down, up. She's like, "It's so easy!" I love how she's smiling, - She's enjoying it.
- She's just like... It's so like...carefree, - Yeah.
- not an ounce of stress. It's like, "This is fun, I'm enjoying it." That's awesome. Dude, I'm so happy for her. And also her um, her pinky is bent, which is very good. - And she can move around with her violin quite well.
- Yes. I guess the one thing I'm impressed with, is like the bow's straight. - That motion, that she gets with the whole bow.
- Yeah. Most people kind of draw— - don't move their elbows,
- Yeah. and their bow goes crooked. She's like, "A-pow-pow-pow-pow-pow!" Dude, she's laughing! - Dude, her rhythm and intonation's like...
- Whoa...! She's playing with the piano, so she's really understanding and hearing the piano part as well, how it fits in with her playing. Dude, this is like just s***ting over every America's Got Talent, Britain's Got Talent. There's so much more rhythm and intonation than any performer on those TV shows. I love also like in the back, - there's some like kindergarten animal poster,
- I know! and she's just like... ...playing Humoresque. Dude, looks like she only has one fine tuner. She's more pro than me. - God...
- I was on two. You were on two for like your whole life! Her slurs have improved a lot, her legato... Oh no! Seitz! Double stops! Dude, she's still three!!! This whole thing is within one year of each other. This took me like three, four, five— Three, four years to get! From like five to nine, you know! Rhythm. She knows. - She can count, she can hear.
- The bars rest... She can count. That's...that sounded easier than—but it's hard, like... Try explaining to a three-year-old. When to come in. When to come in! Dude, I remember even in youth orchestra, and the school orchestras, people didn't know when to come in. (both) Ohhhhh!!!!!! Dude...! Dude, that's actually messed up. She's three, still! Slur, separate separate, do! The coordination. It's actually impressive, like there's a lot going on here, guys. The thing I'm still the most impressed about is she's playing everything in time, in tune, and with like a confident tone. Oh!!! She's still three years old. She hasn't changed...! - It's like, she should be like six already or something?
- I know! Dude, her scale! Shift... She literally crammed in a year of what I did in like five years. - It's not an easy rhythm to understand.
- Yeah. 'Cause it's off the... - Off the tie.
- Tie. And she nailed it. How do you explain it to a young kid? You don't. She's a prodigy. I don't know. "So the tied note, you wait till the beats... - ...drop,
- Yeah. and you go off the beat." If they don't get it from there on, they're not a prodigy! This is 2016, how old would she be now? She'd be eight! She playing Paganini now? Probably. Probably, yeah. She's looking at the camera...! Yeah...! She's like, "This is too easy!" Ohh! Phrasing! I can start to hear a little bit of phrasing! Oh, dude, you can hear that - musical side coming out now.
- Yeah... At age four, wow. Okay. She in front of all these books too. - She's like, "I'm so intellectual."
- Yeah...! I know...! "I read all of it." Oh wow. I remember these kind of like, - Eisteddfod competitions,
- Yeah. we used to do them. I don't recall seeing a four-year-old though. Yeah, nah...! - Usually the youngest is like, ten. Nine or ten.
- Yeah, I don't see a four... Oh my god. Chords...! You can see her wrist started becoming more... - Mm-hmm.
- Um... ...flexible now. Allows her to do more... - ...better bow distribution as well.
- Yeah, exactly. - Do you know what Suzuki book this is?
- What? - Like seven?
- Yeah. At age four, bro. That crescendo... Alright, I'm out. I'm done. Guys, that is not easy. You gotta do such a quick down bow and catch up with everything else. - She did vibrato?!
- Ahhh!!! I just heard that! I learnt vibrato at like... ...I think, nine. Yeah, nine or ten. It was like at least...I... - At least three years... of playing.
- Yeah. I guess this is around the two-year mark for her. - But her two years is like our five years.
- Shhhhh. - I'm curious to see how her tone develops.
- Yeah. Yeah. Oh...! There's so much technique going on here, guys. Yeah, it's tricky. It's like you're doing five down, and then you have up down up, but your up down up has to... - Catch going back.
- ...catch up to there, but it...it can't sound like... - ...you know.
- Yeah, but she made it. Yeah. - Did you see that? Did you see that?
- That bow speed! Did you see— Did you guys see that catch up? Ohh...! You don't hear it, but you see it. You're like, "Whoa...!" Dude, you talking about tone? Dude, she has... - She has better vibrato than me, dude!
- Bah... I don't think people that don't play violin or strings will realise how hard it is to - sustain a long note like that.
- Yeah. - This is incredibly hard.
- Yeah, without going... Did you notice? There's less and less stickers on the bow now? - Yeah...!
- There was three, now there's one! Wow... Wow...! I quit. I resign. How do you even communicate all of this to a...two/three-year-old? Just going off... ...like how we used to teach, right? - It's not easy to explain it to a kid.
- It's not easy! Especially when they don't get rhythm. It's like, "This is one, and two." And they're like... You're like, "Oh my god." Nah, this is what my students were like. Okay, I mean...not my students. But hypothetically, - this is what my students might have been like.
- Okay. They're like... "Oh, what are you thinking?" It's like, "My brother's playing football outside." - You're non-existent! They're like...
- Yeah! Then they will be like this. You be like, "Can you play this?" "You know, my mommy made cookies today!" - Yeah!
- And then I was like, "Ohhhh!!" "Just play the piece!" "Argh!!!" Alright guys, accent the like button, and remember to practice.
