[Music] hey what's up everyone welcome to found flicks on this ending explain we'll be looking in depth at the new Netflix series the haunting of Hill House following the crane family whose lives are forever altered by their time living there the latest from Mike Flanagan Hill House is more than your average ghost story delving deeper into the characters and as a result making it feel like a much more personal impactful experience which is helped by exceptional work from the entire cast especially the kids the story is filled with many mysteries and questions that it slowly unravels over the course of the season told in a complicated time jump fashion which can also make things difficult to follow and as the show is 10 episodes I can't possibly address every aspect to the story in one video so I'll be focusing on the bigger story at play in both timelines I've also had some people asking for a guide to all of the hidden ghosts that hide throughout the house so let me know if you'd like to see that video all right let's dig into the haunting of Hill House breaking down the story answering the biggest of the many mysteries introduced including the ever-present locked Red Room and explaining the ending at its core the show explores the idea of grief and the many forms that it can take the ghosts of Hill House aren't you specters or spirits but also stand-ins for any personal grief and how the human mind creates ghosts or really hangs onto memories of those we've lost to cope with them being gone this concept is explored over much of the first season story seeing through the eyes of the crane family and up to a point it seems that all the ghosts are merely these memories or ways to cope but late in the season it's clear that some of these ghosts are real and are in fact victims of the hill house well it might appear like your average creepy mansion in the middle of nowhere as Olivia states a house is a living thing she means it metaphorically but the Hill House is indeed a living entity and source of evil and anyone unlucky enough to enter its doors are targeted by the house feeding on them before influencing them to take their own lives and becoming another Spectre doomed to roam the houses halls for eternity all of these factors are seen through the crane family's experiences at Hill House through two different timelines following the family parents Hugh and Olivia along with their five children Stephen Theodora Shirley Luke and Eleanor phew they've been busy moving in in 1992 with the idea of fixing up and selling the house and it's not long after that signs of the paranormal start to seep into their lives subtly at first via things like cold spots in the house or phantom dogs barking every night then soon increasing in intensity the kids seen ghostly apparitions mostly of the hill family and mother Olivia becoming more and more emotionally unstable leading to in the middle of the night hue dragging the kids and leaving the house in a hurry leaving Olivia behind to the children's confusion only later learning that their mother had somehow died in the house hue refused to ever tell the children any specifics of what happened and what he saw and we learned that these childhood experiences have had a dramatic impact on each member of the family picking up 26 years after their mother's death unable to truly move on from the loss of their mother as well as the various supernatural activity they witnessed we see that each has tried to deal with their pain and trauma in different ways Stephen turned his trauma into cash writing bestselling novels about his time at Hill House and then telling other people's stories of ghostly encounters though he never has believed in the paranormal surely who as a kid was terrified to see her mother's body at the funeral faced her fears and went on to opening a funeral home providing embalming services in her mind to help preserve the person's memory in a positive way Theo who has a kind of psychic connection to anything she touches puts up emotional walls around her never letting anything in after Hill House and even became a therapist helping others like her in order to understand her own trauma Luke continued being haunted by visions in his later life mostly that of mr. Hill himself and turned to drugs to cope with reality though they never truly left him and in the process has become a hopeless junkie that has burned his family to the point that no one believes in him ever getting better then there's Luke's twin Eleanor or now to her family whose connection with her brother is very strong even feeling the physical effects of his withdrawals at times she also has been struggling with her own problems especially the ghosts she calls the bit neck lady that haunted her as a child and the fear of her is so much that when seeing her she becomes completely frozen unable to move a disorder known as sleep paralysis luckily she meets a Sleep technician Arthur who is able to help her with this and the to fall in love and get married and for a while she's seen genuinely happy and no longer sees the bent neck lady but after a period of peace she returns along with Nell sleep paralysis and when suffering an episode arthur tragically has an aneurysm and dies this is what sets our story in motion as now believes that arthur was in fact killed by the bit neck lady and decides she has no choice but to return to Hill House to confront her past and try to put a stop to it once and for all unfortunately when she returns the house claims her influencing her to hang herself and it's her death that drags the scattered family back together though they only think that she committed suicide as a result of not being able to stand the pain of the past any longer it's not until they're secretive father Hugh re-enters the picture in present day that thing's taking a more supernatural turn telling the others that it was in fact the house that killed her a determined and sober Luke decides to take matters into his own hands going off on his own to burn the house to the ground and in their misery of course the house doesn't allow this immediately putting out the fire when he lights it and Luke is taken by a spirit before delving further it's important to establish that time does not move linearly within the walls of Hill House with the past and future all occurring at once a much more fluid kind of time allowing crossovers between moments even if separated by years this is first established with Nellie learning that she was the same bent neck lady that terrified her all these years seen after her death dragged almost like in an elevator through time and space appearing to Nell over and over all the houses doing and it was these visions that brought her back there and how it was finally able to take her as an adult kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy with all this weird time stuff how the house claims its victims is by influencing their behavior more or less driving them mad before convincing them to take their own lives this is the faith that befell Olivia it's mentioned that all of her family line including her girls are all psychically sensitive and this is why Olivia was more susceptible to the house's influence she's presented with terrible visions of the twins as adults both death and it's one ghosts urging that drives her into madness a previous resident poppy who lived in the house before murdering her own children convincing Olivia that her children are asleep and a horrible nightmare and it's up to her to wake them up by killing them witch poppy leads her to believe will in fact set them free it was that night that she was finally driven to do so cooking up a special batch of poison tea for the twins along with Luke's real not imaginary friend Abigail daughter to the caretakers of the house she has a perfect setting for their tea party to their for the first time opened Red Room here looking all dark and decrepit serving the kids the tea Abigail drink some quickly affected by the poison and dies before anything worse can happen Hugh shows up dragging the kids away from her and knocking Olivia unconscious waking up alone she's had her worse emotional state imaginable seeing what she's done to Abigail making it even easier for poppy to convince her to take her own life getting her to believe that this all must be a dream and desperate to wake up poppy urges her to walk off the side of the staircase the fall killing her back in present-day the rest of the family follows after Luke Stephen and Hugh are the first to arrive and Stephen has his own supernatural encounter with mr. Hill urged by his father to not give in to his fear and the spirit moves on after this Stephen has no choice but to be a believer in his father's long-held beliefs about ghosts in the house Stephen finds Luke unconscious on the red room floor with a needle in his arm but winds up trapped inside eventually he's joined by his sisters the house holding them captivity turns his attention to each of them creating a nightmarish hallucination that forced them to confront their respective deepest fears for Stephen who has separated from his wife he's seen reconciled with a pregnant Lee only for her stomach to branch out and blackness and vines Stephen has believed that the problems that follow his family are actually a hereditary disorder and dusty was afraid to have kids and got a vasectomy lying to his wife about it and that's what caused them to separate Shirley had been plagued by random visions of a suited man offering a hearty Cheers and now we're presented with the full context of what must be a huge mistake that she hasn't reconciled she meets a man at a bar at a convention buying her a drink she turns him down showing her wedding ring but the man is undeterred offering they can still have a nice friendly chat even if Mary unsurprisingly his intentions aren't so innocent as he is also married it turns out and despite all of this surely has a one-night stand with a stranger and never revealed it to her husband Kevin this is made even more egregious because of how self-righteous she is to everyone now seeming almost as a defense to her own mistake to make her feel better by rubbing in everyone else's mistakes Luke's is both failing to help his rehab friend and potential love interest as well as his drug use finally killing him picking up back with him on the streets after escaping the sitter in search of her and getting mugged whereas we know she took his money and ran off or not as she in the fantasy returns saying she in a hotel room urging him to join her and shooting up he refuses but she says it's already too late seeing a needle sticking in his arms and her eyes promptly melts tying back to a story from a soldier told in their group sessions Theo's is about her inability to feel as a result of building up her emotional walls and whit her girlfriends standing in for the house asked her to touch her skin Theo says she feels nothing though she may have built up walls these walls actually kept grief and fear inside with her making it even worse because of her emotional distance she then tries to seduce Theo the same as her mother and sister before that if she wakes up all those bad feelings will go away as ghostly hands reach out and cover her face but here as in each of the siblings experiences the spirit of Nellie is able to save them touching them and whisking them out of their nightmares into safety thanks to their strong familial love the siblings all reunited the spirit of Nell is there who has come to understand what the Red Room is calling back to her mother's description of the Living House the Red Room acts as its stomach there it slowly feeds on its victims by presenting a false sense of security as such the Red Room can actually take various forms one for each of the family members like Olivia's reading room Luke's treehouse Theo's dance studio and Steve's game room in each case the room changed its appearance to suit each of the kids these rooms were a place of comfort and security for them where each spent the majority of their time which it took advantage of to slowly feet from them as there are no truly safe rooms in this house and since time in the house moves fluidly this allowed each room to exist in a sense in its own time and space at one point Theo in her dance studio getting interrupted by her sisters trying to break into the room on the other side she was in fact already inside as they have all been at various points but were never aware that the house was digesting them the whole time the siblings emotionally apologized to Nellie for missing her call the night she died but she assures them it wouldn't have made a difference and all that matters is the love they feel for each other and that will never go away and will always be a part of them even if she is gone outside the Red Room the ghost of Olivia talks to Hugh telling him she's excited all of their children are finally home but he pleads with her that they're dying not waking up like she keeps insisting he comes to realize that by trying to hide the truth from the kids the secrecy is what caused them to have their respective issues offers himself in place of the kids to the house asking to open the door for them and he will stay here forever wanting to fix this his ever-present motto the house accepts the red rooms door opening and allowing the kids to escape we didn't see the final moments of hue in 1992 when he returned to the house later that night finding Olivia debt and wants to burn the house to the ground but Dudley begs him not to house their daughter Abigail spirit is now attached to the house the parents can still see their daughter there definitely agrees to keep everything a secret as long as hue keeps them on and leaves the house alone explaining why hue holds on to the house all these years but refuses to ever sell it for the Dudley's it's actually a positive place where they can see Abigail and in the present time when mrs. Dudley passes she too becomes one of the spirits along with their stillborn baby all nicely reunited in the afterlife for them the power of the house is a thing of comfort as long as it's still there these memories and ghosts are never truly gone for that reason hue leaves it alone before staying behind he passes on the house and the promise to Steven joining Olivia and Nellie in the red room the door closing them inside leaving Stephen on his own well not quite as there are suddenly hordes of spirits in every corner of the house though he remains untouched on the way outside even though Olivia Nellie and Hugh were lost to the house the surviving crane family after their recent experiences are finally able to move on and have happy lives each overcoming the pain that had been destroying them for so long and a house is left alone empty and decrepit unable to claim any more victims under its spell while also serving as a memorial to the past and all of the spirits that still inhabit its walls I'm just glad the family has a more or less happy ending after dealing with so watch over the season and if there is a season to witch creator Mike Flanagan doesn't seem opposed to it would not feature the return of the cranes according to him they've been through enough and the end of the season is also the end of this story which definitely feels like it comes to a satisfying conclusion so if there is a season two which seems probable considering what I hit the show is it will feature all new characters encountering Hill House and act more as an anthology kind of series rather than any old characters returning know what be cool if they did bring back some of the dead cranes as spirits since they are still at the house as kind of a way to bridge the stories and keep some series continuity in an interesting way like I said there's no way I can cover the entirety of a show like this in one video so if you still have any questions I didn't cover leave them down in the comments and maybe I'll do a follow-up also let me know if you want to see a video covering all the hidden ghosts that show up they are all over the place and make sure to send me a video request for any movies or TV shows you'd like to see me explain by sending them to me on any of my social media accounts at conflicts what did you guys think of hunting of Hill House and it's ending what would you like to see in a potential season to let me know your thoughts in the comments below make sure to LIKE subscribe and follow thanks for watching found flicks DX
