us and may god bless you [Music] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] us [Music] oh [Music] oh is my me [Music] in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit peace be with you [Music] brothers and sisters let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries i confess to almighty god and to you my brothers and sisters that i have greatly sent in my thoughts and in my words in what i have done and in what i have failed to do through my fault through my fault through my most grievous fault therefore i ask blessed mary ever virgin all the angels and saints and you my brothers and sisters to pray for me to the lord our god may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life [Music] [Laughter] [Music] is glory to god in the highest me lord jesus christ have mercy on us us jesus let us pray grant us lord our god that we may honor you with all our mind and love everyone in truth of heart through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god forever and ever [Music] a reading from the book of the prophet jeremiah the word of the lord came to me saying before i formed you in the womb i knew you before you were born i dedicated you a prophet to the nations i appointed you but do you gird your loins stand up and tell them all that i command you be not crushed on their account as though i would leave you crushed before them for it is i this day who have made you a fortified city a pillar of iron a wall of brass against the whole land against judah's kings and princes against its priests and people they will fight against you but not prevail over you for i am with you to deliver you says the lord the word of the lord [Music] i will sing of your salvation [Music] you let me never be put to shame in your justice rescue and deliver me incline your ear to me and save me [Music] be my walk of refuge a stronghold to give me safety for you are my rock and my father oh my god rescue me from the hand of the wicked for you are my hope o lord my trust o god from my youth on you i depend from birth from my mother's womb you are my strength [Applause] [Music] my mouth shall declare your justice [Music] o god you have taught me from my youth and till the present i proclaim your wondrous deeds [Music] a reading from the first letter of saint paul to the corinthians brothers and sisters strive eagerly for the greatest spiritual gifts but i shall show you a still more excellent way if i speak in human and angelic tongues but do not have love i am a resounding gong or a clashing symbol and if i have the prop gift of prophecy and comprehend all mysteries and all knowledge if i have all faith so as to move mountains but do not have love i am nothing if i give away everything i own and if i hand my body over so that i may boast but to have but do not have love i gain nothing love is patient love is kind it is not jealous it is not pompous it is not inflated it is not rude it does not seek its own interests it is not quick tempered it does not brood over injury it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth it bears all things all things hopes all things endures all things love never fails if there are prophecies they will be brought to nothing if tongues they will cease if knowledge it will be brought to nothing for we know partially and we prophesy partially but when the perfect comes the partial will pass away when i was a child i used to talk as a child think as a child reason as a child when i became a man i put aside childish things at present we see indistinctly as in a mirror but then face to face at present i know partially then i shall know fully as i am fully known so faith hope love remain these three but the greatest of these is love the word of the lord [Music] oh [Music] to proclaim liberty to counters [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke [Music] jesus began speaking in the synagogue saying today this scriptures passage is fulfilled in your hearing and all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth they also asked isn't this the son of joseph he said to them surely you will quote me this proverb physician cure yourself and say do here in your native place the things that we heard were done in capernaum and he said amen i say to you no prophet is accepted in his own native place indeed i tell you there were many widows in israel in the days of elijah when the sky was closed for three and a half years and a severe famine spread over the entire land it was to none of these that elijah was sent but only to a widow in zarapath in the land of sidon again there were many lepers in israel during the time of elisha the prophet yet not one of them was cleansed but only nam and the syrian when the people in the synagogue heard this they were all filled with fury they rose up drove him out of the town and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built to hurl him down headlong but jesus passed through the midst of them and went away the gospel of the lord [Music] love does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth this key teaching of god about love instructs us how to interpret the rejoicing over wrongdoing that occurred three years ago when the now disgraced former governor of new york gleefully signed an infamous abortion bill into law and led those around him in a raucous applause they applauded the fact that unborn children the most innocent and vulnerable among us no longer had any legal protection in the state of new york what should be the responsible response of the followers of jesus to that the second vatican council called abortion an unspeakable crime pope francis said that abortion is like hiring a hit man to murder the innocent my sons and daughters in christ some evils are so horrible they should sour our stomachs and move us to act but they should not rob us of our hope and should not steal our peace this was the interior struggle that the prophet jeremiah faced as we heard in today's first reading on the one hand god's love for the prophet began before he was conceived before i formed you in the womb god says i knew you a prophet to the nations i appointed you so jeremiah knew that god chose him to be his prophet out of love to be his spokesman his servant and his defender of truth on the other hand he knew that his words would not be welcomed for god also told him as found in today's first reading gird your loins stand up and tell them all that i command you be not crushed on their account as though i would leave you crushed before them jeremiah took to heart what god was asking of him and he understood why his witness to the truth was needed he would agree with the martyring bishop of el salvador blessed oscar romero who was assassinated in 1980 he said preaching that does not point out sin is not preaching the gospel a preaching that makes sinners feel good so that they become entrenched in their sinful state betrays the gospel's call but a preaching that awakens a preaching that enlightens as when a light turns on and awakens and of course annoys the sleeper that is preaching christ calling wake up be converted throughout his life jeremiah had to speak out against the kings and princes of judah who betrayed their country he had to speak out against the religious leaders too against the priests and the temple officials who sought security in material things rather than in god he would provide all that he needed however the lord assured jeremiah for it as i this day who have made you a fortified city a pillar of iron a wall of brass against the whole land against judah's princes and kings against its priests and people love rejoices with the truth writes saint paul to the corinthians in today's second reading and so does every baptized christian whom god anoints with a share in his prophetic mission in the world when jesus returned to his hometown and spoke in the synagogue as today's first reading records her gospel reading records the people rose up they drove him out of town they led him to the brow of the hill on which the town had been built to hurl him down headlong but god protected him simeon had told mary and joseph when they presented their christ child in the temple behold this child is destined for the fall and the rise of many in israel and to be assigned is contradicted and so it happened when jesus returned to nazareth his hometown after preaching and working miracles in capernaum he was contradicted and rejected but god the father supported him we're told jesus passed through their midst and walked away that jeremiah and jesus encountered opposition when they obeyed god's command alerts you and me to the likelihood of the same for us when we fulfill our mission to stand up for what is true and right but just as jeremiah and jesus were not deterred in their missions may you and i find fortitude in christ to do the same let us be prepared for opposition but never discouraged by whatever may we may encounter as saint paul wrote love rejoices with the truth it bears all things it believes all things it hopes all things it endures all things love never fails the love of christ in married couples for example never fails when they trust in the church's teaching on marital love refusing to practice contraception and remaining open to children christ is their courage and their song and should couples face a difficult pregnancy if they're advised to get an abortion god supports them to resist such bad advice to carry the baby to term and to welcome the lord's gift of a child if the in the public square the lord is calling you to speak out against what is wrong or stand up for tough truths know that you're not alone the holy spirit of truth will lead you to all truth and will give you the courage to speak it boldly and with love should you face pressure at work to compromise your conscience or to remain silent about something wrong remember god's promise to jeremiah in today's first reading they will fight against you but not prevail over you for i am with you to deliver you says the lord god is inviting you and me like jeremiah and jesus to be a sign of contradiction in our time precisely by living the truth in love this is a formidable task but when done for the sake of christ and his gospel it is prophetic and it bears fruit good fruit god could have placed us in easier circumstances he could have removed obstacles to our path he could have given us better neighbors or kids with fewer problems or better elected officials or better bishops in the church but faith believes in god's love no matter what even if you're thrown out of town as jesus was may you and i resist the temptation to doubt god's plans may we stir up our trust in his promises if we but persevere in hope we will discover this fundamental truth god is always with us if we persevere we will discover the wisdom of what saint paul wrote to the philippians chapter 4 verse 13 in god who is my source of strength i have strength for all will those who are preparing to enter into the catholic church at easter please come forward my dear friends this community now sends you forth to reflect more deeply upon the word of god which you have shared with us today be assured of our loving support and prayers for you we look forward to the day when you will share fully in the lord's table go in peace i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from life true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things remain for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sin and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen god is our stronghold in our refuge let us pray to this loving father for all our needs that our holy father pope francis may continue to guide the church with eloquence and love let us pray to the lord [Music] the christians elected to represent us may be strong in the courage of christ who was rejected by his own people let us pray to the lord that we may not rely on earthly things but place our hope in the god who never fails us let us pray to the lord that those formed in the womb may be mourned in security and love let us pray to the lord [Music] for all those who are homebound especially those who join us for this mass on television or internet let us pray to the lord [Music] that those who have passed through death may see god face to face let us pray to the lord [Music] and for all saint simon and jude parishioners for whom this mass is offered let us pray to the lord almighty father hear the prayers of the people you gathered at this altar and made one in faith hope and love we ask this through christ our lord [Music] my is is me [Music] [Applause] [Music] is [Music] is [Music] my [Music] right [Music] is is [Music] is is [Music] right [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father oh lord we bring to your altar [Music] these offerings of our service be pleased to receive them we pray and transform them into the sacrament of our redemption christ our lord [Music] the lord be with you [Music] [Music] let us give thanks to the lord our god [Music] it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god through who christ our lord for by his birth he brought renewal to humanity's fallen state and by his suffering cancelled out hold our sins by his rising from the dead he has opened the way to eternal life and by ascending to you o father he has unlocked the gates of heaven and so with the company of angels and saints we sing the hymn of your praise as without end we acclaim [Music] there foreign [Music] you are indeed holy o lord and all you have created rightly gives you praise for through your son our lord jesus christ by the power and working of the holy spirit you give life to all things and make them holy and you never cease to gather a people to yourself so that from the rising of the sun to a setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name and therefore oh lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration that they may become the body and blood of your son our lord jesus christ at whose command we celebrate these mysteries for on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was injured he took the chalice and giving you thanks he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins to this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] therefore oh lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you willed to reconcile us to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with his holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may he make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the most blessed virgin mary mother of god with blessed joseph her spouse with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs with saint simon and jude and with all the saints on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help may this sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray o lord advance the peace and salvation of all the world be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth with your servant francis our pope and me your unworthy servant eduardo my assistant the order of bishops all the clergy and the entire people you have gained for your own listen graciously to the prayers of this family whom you have summoned before you in your compassionate merciful father gather to yourself all your children scattered throughout the world to our departed brothers and sisters and to all who were pleasing to you at their passing from this life give kind abundant admittance to your kingdom there we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory through christ our lord through whom you bestow on the world all that is good through who him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation [Music] but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ [Music] lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will live and reign forever and ever [Music] the peace of the lord be with you always right [Music] let us offer each other the sign of
