rebelled have not turned back i gave my back to those who beat me my cheeks to those who plucked my beard my face i did not shield from buffets and spitting the lord god is my help therefore i am not disgraced i have set my face like flint knowing that i shall not be put to shame he is near who upholds my right if anyone wishes to oppose me let us appear together who disputes my right let that man confront me see the lord god is my help who will prove me wrong the word of the lord i will walk before the lord in the land i will walk before the lord in the land [Music] i love the lord for he has heard my voice my appeal for he has turned his ear to me whenever [Music] i will walk before the lord [Music] they surrounded me the snares of death the anguish of the grave has wound me [Music] anguish and sorrow i found i called on the name of deliver my soul lord [Music] i will [Music] how gracious is the lord and a just our god has compassion the lord protects the sinful i was brought low and he saved me [Music] he has kept my soul from death my eyes from tears and my feet from stumbling i will walk in the presence of the [Music] i will walk before [Music] a reading from the letter of saint james what good is it my brothers and sisters if someone says he has faith but does not have works can that faith save him if a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day and one of you says to them go in peace keep warm and eat well but you do not give them the necessities of the body what good is it so also faith of itself if it does not have works is dead indeed someone might say you have faith and i have works demonstrate your faith to me without works and i will demonstrate my faith to you from my works the word of the lord [Music] oh [Music] through which the world has been crucified to me [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to mark [Music] [Music] jesus and his disciples set out for the villages of caesarea philippi along the way he asked his disciples who do people say that i am they said in reply john the baptist others elijah still others one of the prophets but he asked them but who do you say that i am peter said to him in reply you are the christ then he warned them not to tell anyone about him he began to teach them that the son of man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders the chief priests and the scribes and be killed and rise after three days he spoke this openly then peter took him aside and began to rebuke him at this he turned around and looking at his disciples rebuked peter and said get behind me satan you are thinking not as god does but as human beings do he summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself take up his cross and follow me for whoever wishes to save his life will lose it but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it the gospel of the lord [Music] are you afraid to be little if our society continues to move the direction it's moving further and further from god one of the consequences of that happening is that it puts a lot of pressure on us as human beings because now we have to be the source of all the answers all the solutions we have to be the source of all of our strength but when it comes to god he doesn't look at us that way he doesn't expect us to be the source of all the answers and the solutions to have enough strength he looks upon us and he sees that we are limited that we are weak in fact that we are sinful and that's part of actually what draws him to us is that he sees our needs and that we can't meet our own needs so we go back to the original question are you afraid to be little because god's not afraid afraid of our littleness in fact he's attracted to it we hear this today from the prophet isaiah he is near who upholds my right if anyone wishes to oppose me let us appear together who disputes my right let that man confront me see the lord god is my help who will prove me wrong a beautiful image of god standing right next to us being there in everything that we go through and experience in our daily lives at our right side protecting guiding sustaining [Music] that's very comforting for me and i hope that you and i can live in such a way that we can help others find that comfort that awareness of god's presence in their life also to unburden this unexpected this unbearable burden that somehow the world puts upon us lord jesus thank you that you are near the psalm goes on and continues this understanding the lord keeps the little ones i was brought low and he saved me lord thank you that you keep us you sustain us you carry us by your love and by your grace when you and i allow ourselves and give us permission give ourselves permission and others permission to struggle and to need god then we can do as james says we can overcome the fear that comes with living a life of faith what good is it my brothers and sisters if someone says he has faith but does not have works lord jesus the faith and the gift that you're giving me of yourself i want to go out and live to help the world understand to live my own understanding how much i and our world needs you saint james goes on and says faith without works is dead so also faith of itself if it does not have works is dead a society without faith will die and destroy itself and so jesus keeps inviting us individually as a church as a society to come back to him to place our faith in him not simply in our own selves secular humanism is to place all the responsibility and faith in ourselves and to dismiss and push god further and further lord jesus thank you that we are not the saviors jesus asked us to reflect on this question of who he is in our gospel today along the way he asked his disciples who do people say that i am he's taking a public poll what does society think about me who do they think that i am the apostles have some basic understanding of what they've heard from other people and so they replied to jesus jesus they think you're john the baptist others think you're elijah still others think you're one of the prophets all of the answers of who the people in the society think that jesus is are dead men john the baptist is dead elijah is dead the prophets are dead why do they think jesus is a dead man they don't understand that he's alive that he's real that he's been sent by the father and in some ways it's similar in our world do we live in such a way as if god is dead or is he living is jesus christ risen from the dead and if he is that affects everything because it means he's alive in my life he's alive in my workplace he's alive and my friendships in my family he's alive everywhere if he's a living god so then jesus brings the question to us individually but who do you say that i am and thanks be to god peter steps forward with courage not only speaking to jesus and the apostles but speaking to those that are able to hear you are the christ you are god you've been sent by the father you have a mission in my life and you have a mission for our world when i hear those words a great sigh of relief comes from within me thanks be to god i'm not the savior thanks be to god i don't have to save myself and try and save others thank you jesus that you are the savior and as he continues to teach who he is bringing them to a deeper understanding a deeper acceptance of his role in their lives and in the world he began to teach him that the son of man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders the chief priests and the scribes and be killed and rise after three days can we accept that reality of who jesus is can we accept that kind of love that's willing to suffer and die and rise for us jesus thank you for who you are what you've gone through and what you continue to do for us in the world this was hard for them to grasp that their best friend the one that they had spent three years with was going to be rejected and persecuted and eventually killed and yet jesus is very confident in who he is jesus give us that confidence in who you are and understanding and believing what you have done and continue to do for us he spoke this openly the gospel tells us he wasn't afraid to tell people who he was but peter couldn't accept it too much to hear this difficult news about his friend and so he posed jesus aside and began to rebuke jesus jesus again confident in who he is knowing the father's plan he turns to peter he turned to the apostles and he rebuked peter get behind me satan you are thinking not as god does but as human beings do lord jesus teach us to think as you think teach us to see and believe who you are lord jesus not our own concept not our own vision of who you are but what you've been teaching for two thousand years jesus help us to understand you for who you are not create you who we want you to be because if jesus if it's true that he has suffered and died and resurrected then by being his followers we're going to suffer we're going to be persecuted and rejected at times and so if we accept the truth of who he is we have to accept the truth of who we are that's a hard reality to swallow at times we can only accept this call and this ability to imitate him because he says he'll be with us and walking with us and journeying with us as we suffer as we're persecuted he promises to be with us and to help us to persevere he summoned the crowd with his disciples and he said to them whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself take up his cross and follow me we must learn not to be afraid to be little to carry our cross with jesus christ to deny those parts of ourselves that wants to stay in a place of comfort instead of a place of courage a place that doesn't want to rock the boat or go upstream lord jesus thank you for carrying the cross with us so that we can imitate you we can follow you for who you are not who we want you to be he continues on as you journey with me he says to us don't try and save your life give your life to me if we're honest with ourselves and we're truly choosing to follow jesus christ we make a daily decision to say to him to surrender to him lord my life is not my own it's yours jesus this is what he teaches us in the gospel whoever wishes to save his life will lose it but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it jesus thank you that you teach us what it means to live in relationship with you what it means to be humble and let you be god and us accept that we are not and that you as our god have a very deep desire and interest in our daily lives you want to draw near to us and you want us to draw near to you my brothers and sisters let's not be afraid to be little because our god is very big let us not be afraid to be weak because our god is strong let us not be afraid to be humble because he says he will lift up the humble oh jesus we ask throughout this mass throughout this week you will continue to teach us who you are so we can say yes to who you've made us to be i believe in one god the father almighty maker of heaven and earth all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god [Music] is in accordance with the scriptures he is your eyes [Music] forgiveness of sins [Music] and
