# ANNOUNCER: From
the Saint Ignatius Chapel, at the Manresa Jesuit
Spiritual Renewal Centre in Pickering, Ontario, the National Catholic
Broadcasting Council presents: The Sunday TV Mass. Welcome to the celebration
of the Sunday TV Mass on the twenty-fourth
Sunday in Ordinary Time. I'm Father Henk van Meijel. The televising
of this Mass is made possible by the contribution
from two donors. The first are
Brian and Blanche D'Mello from Burlington, Ontario,
in thanksgiving to Jesus, Mother Mary,
St. Joseph, and God above all for the gift
of their first grandchild, Lauren Josephine D'Mello. For the souls of the D'Mello, Lopez, D'Arreo,
and Brooks families, and all the dearly departed
souls in purgatory. The second is an anonymous donor
from Scarborough, Ontario, in loving memory of Wilkin Wong and for all the Holy Souls. Our thanks to our donors
for the gift of this Mass. In the name of the Father, and the Son,
and the Holy Spirit. ALL: Amen. The peace
of the Lord be with you. PARISHIONERS:
And with your spirit. And as we have placed ourselves
on this Sunday before the Lord, again recalling
that we are not perfect, that every breath
belongs to God. You were sent to heal
the contrite of heart Lord, have mercy. PARISHIONERS: Lord, have mercy. FATHER:
You came to call sinners. Christ, have mercy. PARISHIONERS:
Christ, have mercy. FATHER: You are seated at
the right hand of the Father to intercede for us. Lord, have mercy. PARISHIONERS: Lord, have mercy. May Almighty God
have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us
to everlasting life. PARISHIONERS: Amen. And let us say together... Glory to God in the highest... ALL: ..and on earth,
peace to people of goodwill. We praise You.
We bless You. We adore You.
We glorify You. We give You thanks
for Your great glory. Lord God, Heavenly King, O God, Almighty Father,
Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God,
Son of the Father, You take away
the sins of the world. Have mercy on us. You take away
the sins of the world. Receive our prayer. You are seated
at the right hand of the Father. Have mercy on us.
For You alone are the Holy One. You alone are the Lord. You alone
are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit,
in the glory of God the Father. Amen. And let us pray. Look upon us, O God,
creator and ruler of all things, and that we may feel
the working of your mercy. Grant that we may
serve you with all our heart through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives
and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, forever and ever. PARISHIONERS: Amen. A reading from the book
of the Prophet Isaiah. "The Lord God has opened my ear
and I was not rebellious. I did not turn backward. I gave my back
to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those
who pulled out the beard. I did not hide my face
from insult and spitting. The Lord God helps me. Therefore,
I have not been disgraced. Therefore,
I have set my face like flint, and I know that
I shall not be put to shame. He who vindicates me is near.
Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together.
Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me.
It is the Lord God who helps me. Who will declare me guilty?" The word of the Lord. PARISHIONERS: Thanks be to God. (Organ playing) # I love the Lord
because He has heard # # My voice
and my supplications # # Because He inclined
His ear to me # # Therefore I will call on Him # # As long as I live # # The snares of death
encompassed me # # The pangs of Sheol
laid hold on me # # I suffered distress # # And anguish # # Then I called on the name # # Of the Lord # # Oh, Lord, I prayed # # Save my life # # Gracious is the Lord # # And righteous # # Our God is merciful # # The Lord protects the simple # # When I was brought low # # He saved me # A reading from
the Letter of Saint James. "'What good is it,
my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith,
but do not have works? Can faith save you? If a brother or a sister
is without clothing, and lacks daily food,
and one of you says to them, "Go in peace.
Keep warm and eat your fill." And yet you do not
supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. But someone will say, "You have faith
and I have works." Show me your faith
apart from your works, and I, by my works,
will show you my faith.'" The word of the Lord. PARISHIONERS:
Thanks be to God. (Organ playing) # Hallelujah... # # Hallelujah # # Hallelujah... # # Hallelujah # # Hallelujah... # # Hallelujah # # May I never
boast of anything # # Except the cross of the Lord # # By which the world
has been crucified to me # # And I to the world # # Hallelujah... # # Hallelujah # # Hallelujah... # The Lord be with you. PARISHIONERS:
And with your spirit. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark. PARISHIONERS:
Glory to you, Lord. "Jesus went on with His
disciples to the village of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way,
He asked His disciples, 'Who do people say that I am?' And they answered Him, 'John the Baptist;
and others, Elijah; and still others,
one of the prophets.' Jesus asked them,
'But who do you say that I am?' Peter answered Him,
'You are the Christ.' And He sternly ordered them
not to tell anyone about Him. Then, He began to teach them that the Son of Man
must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests,
and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He said all this quite openly. And Peter took Jesus aside
and began to rebuke Him. But turning
and looking at His disciples, He rebuked Peter and said,
'Get behind me, Satan! For you are thinking not as
God does, but as humans do." Jesus called the crowd with His
disciples, and said to them, 'Whoever wants
to become my follower, let him deny himself
and take up his cross and follow me. For, whoever wants
to save their life will lose it, and whoever loses
their life for my sake, and for the sake
of the gospel, will save it.'" The Gospel of the Lord. PARISHIONERS: Praise to You,
Lord Jesus Christ. I could almost
give a weekend retreat on the gospel reading. And it's so beautiful here. Jesus, He really
shows His divinity. He has to suffer.
The Suffering Servant. As the early Christians
would connect that right away to Isaiah,
the suffering servant in Isaiah, who really never was meant-- --named by name. But I always love Peter. Actually, I really--
Peter reminds me of myself. And there's that duality. "Lord, I wanna follow You. Yes, lord,
I wanna suffer with You. But--
(Wincing) I don't wanna suffer. Do I have
to make a commitment? That's too much." There's that duality
in each one of us and it is something
what we don't just overcome. Even the most committed person, when, really, things strike, it often, it is like, "Oh, oh, oh,
I don't wanna suffer!" And, really,
there are a few saints who embraced
the suffering, and readily. However, it took
for them quite a while too to come to that point to say, "Yes,
I want to suffer with Jesus. I want to suffer with Jesus." But, it's a long road. And of course,
we know that Peter, in the end, he embraced
that suffering fully, and, he was martyred in Rome. But, to overcome that duality, it is always within us. There is that desire
to become godlike, but there is also
that selfish side, and that side
of self-preservation of course. And, which is not all bad. But it is the human side of us
with the divine side. It's the flesh against the soul. And so, when we go
to the Letter of James, he really brings that together. That faith in itself is really meaningless. And it goes back
to the time of the Reformation. There was that
theological discussion between the different parties
that "I can say I have faith, and I'm saved, but it doesn't
really have to be with actions." But really, if you look
at our faith journey, the steps we take... We... There is this part
that we say "I have faith." But the works are not there. And, often, it also
depending where we grew up, in what kind of family. So many families
it is so easy to judge people and say,
"Oh, this person is no good," and "That person is no good." And of course, when we do that, then I'm saying "I'm good,
of course, and, I'm saved." And... But, we all are born
in different families. We all got different examples. And if you come
from a good family... And, we had plenty
of struggles in my own family. My mother suffered
with post traumatic from the Second World War. But she had that example of
giving totally self to the kids. It was really difficult while
she struggled with depression, and I have the privilege
to have her prayer book. It is full. It is full and she always
was praying with the saints, and, looking at the saints,
and looking at those examples, and then trying
to follow it, obviously. And this is our life journey. But, the more
we come in touch with that, the more we come in touch
with our weaknesses, the more we also look
at the examples around us. And we don't just have
to look at the saints. We, each, can think of someone,
or several, in our lives, who are really good examples on the way to move forward,
on the way to move forward. It can be religious, but it can
also be in daily practical life. And, for instance,
a good friend of mine... I used to be a little, um,
well, a little anger issue and when I got angry,
as a mechanic too, I would get... You know, I'd get
really upset and everything, got flustered and so on. A friend of mine,
if things didn't go good, he went to Tim Hortons
for a coffee, had a coffee, came back. And so, we can have,
also, examples in our lives which doesn't have to be,
you know, scripture based, or whatever. But, when
we make that commitment, God will put examples
in our lives, and it can be
all kinds of people, but, to recognize those examples, and then say, "That person
has something I wanna have." And the more we do that,
the more we grow in our faith. The more our faith also shows itself in our works, in the way we act,
in what we do in our community, the way
we treat people around us. Amen. And so, on this Sunday, let us say together
The Apostles' Creed. I believe in God,
the Father Almighty... ALL: ..creator
of Heaven and Earth, and in Jesus Christ,
His Only Son, our Lord, who was conceived
by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified,
died, and was buried. He descended into Hell. On the third day,
He rose again from the dead. He ascended into Heaven and is seated at the right hand
of God, the Father Almighty. From there He will come to judge
the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. And so, let us pray for all those
in the Daily TV Mass community who have dedicated
to the care of the sick. May they receive the grace
to continue the ministry of compassion and caring
with hope and joy. We pray to the Lord. PARISHIONERS:
Lord, hear our prayer. We pray today on the anniversary
of the Episcopal Ordination of Bishop Robert Kasun, who is the vice-chair
of the Daily TV Mass board and blesses our TV community
with so many Masses, and his wise guidance. May God bless Bishop Kasun with many more years
of reasonably good health. And for this
we pray to the Lord. PARISHIONERS:
Lord, hear our prayer. And for these prayers, and the prayers in
the silence of our own hearts, we lift them up to you, Lord. ALL: Amen. Blessed are You, Lord,
God of all creation. For through Your goodness, we have received
the bread we offer You. Fruit of the earth
and work of human hands, it will become, for us,
the bread of life. PARISHIONERS:
Blessed be God forever. By the mystery
of this water and wine, may we come to share
in the divinity of Christ, who humbled Himself
to share in our humanity. Blessed are You, Lord,
God of all creation. For through Your goodness, we have received
the wine we offer You, fruit of the vine,
and work of human hands. It will become
our spiritual drink. ALL: Blessed be God forever. With humbled spirit
and contrite heart, may we be accepted by You, O Lord, and may
our sacrifice in Your sight this day
be pleasing to You, Lord God. Wash me, O Lord,
from my inequities. Cleanse me of my sins. Pray, my sisters and brothers, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable
to God, the Almighty Father. PARISHIONERS: May the Lord accept the sacrifice
at your hands for the praise and glory
of His name, for our good, and the good
of all of His Holy Church. Look with favour
on our supplications, O Lord, and in Your kindness, accept these,
Your servants' offerings. that what each has offered
to the honour of Your name may serve the salvation of all, through Christ our Lord. PARISHIONERS: Amen. The Lord be with you. PARISHIONERS:
And with your spirit. Lift up your hearts. PARISHIONERS:
We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks
to the Lord, our God. PARISHIONERS:
It is right and just. It is truly right and just,
our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere
to give You thanks, Lord, Holy Father,
almighty and eternal God, through Christ our Lord. For out of compassion for
the waywardness that is ours, He humbled Himself
and was born of the Virgin. By the passion of the cross,
He freed us from unending death. And by rising from the dead,
He gave us life eternal. And so,
with the angels and archangels, with thrones and dominions, and with all the hosts
and powers of Heaven, we sing the hymn of your glory,
as without end we acclaim. (Organ music playing) # Holy, holy # # Holy # # Lord God of hosts # # Heaven and Earth # # Are full of your glory # # Hosanna # # In the highest # # Hosanna # # In the highest # # Blessed is he who comes # # In the name of the Lord # # Hosanna # # In the highest # # Hosanna # # In the highest # You are, indeed holy, O Lord, the fount of all holiness. Make holy,
therefore, these gifts, we pray, by sending down Your Spirit
upon them like the dewfall, so that they may become, for us, the body and blood
of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time He was betrayed and entered willingly
into His Passion, He took bread, and giving
You thanks, broke it, and gave it to His disciples, saying, "Take this,
all of you, and eat of it. For this is my body, which will be given up for you." (Chimes ringing) In a similar way
when supper was ended, He took the chalice,
and once more giving thanks, He gave it to
His disciples saying, "Take this,
all of you, and drink from it. For this is
the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new
and eternal covenant, which will be
poured out for you and for many,
for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me." (Chimes ringing) The mystery of faith. (Organ playing) # When we eat this bread # # And drink this cup # # We proclaim Your death # # O Lord # # Until You come # # Again # Therefore,
as we celebrate the memorial of His death
and resurrection we offer You, Lord,
the bread of life, and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks
that You have held us worthy to be in Your presence
and minister to You. Humbly we pray, that, partaking
of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered
into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, Your Church
spread throughout the world and bring her
to the fullness of charity, together with Francis our Pope, Thomas our bishop, Robert Kasun,
our auxiliary bishop, and all the bishops, the clergy, and the entire people
You have gained for Your own. Remember, also,
our sisters and brothers who have fallen asleep
in the hope of the Resurrection, and all who have
died in Your mercy. Welcome them
into the light of Your face. Have mercy on us all, we pray, that, with the Blessed
Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with Blessed Joseph, her spouse,
with the blessed apostles, and all the saints who have
pleased You throughout the ages, we may merit to be
coheirs to eternal life, and may praise and glorify You through Your Son, Jesus Christ. Through Him,
and with Him, and in Him, O God, Almighty Father, in the unity
of the Holy Spirit, all glory
and honour is Yours forever and ever. ALL: Amen. And at the Saviour's command, and formed
by the divine teaching, we dare to say... ALL: ...our Father,
who are in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come; thy will be done on Earth
as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those
who trespass against us, and lead us not in temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord,
we pray, from every evil. Graciously
grant peace in our days, that by the help of Your mercy,
we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress,
as we await the blessed hope, and the coming of
our Saviour, Jesus Christ. ALL: For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are Yours,
now and forever. Lord Jesus Christ,
who said to Your apostles, "Peace I leave you.
My peace I give you." Look not on our sins, but
on the faith of Your Church, and graciously
grant her peace and unity in accordance with Your will, who live and reign
forever and ever. ALL: Amen. The peace of the Lord
be with you always. PARISHIONERS:
And with your spirit. And let us offer each other
a sign of peace. (Organ playing) # Lamb of God # # You take away # # The sins of the world # # Have mercy # # On us # # Lamb of God # # You take away # # The sins of the world # # Have mercy # # On us # # Lamb of God # # You take away # # The sins of the world # # Grant us # # Peace # Behold the Lamb of God. Behold Him who takes away
the sins of the world. Blessed are those called
to the supper of the Lamb. ALL: Lord, I am not worthy that
you should enter under my roof, but only say the word,
and my soul shall be healed. And may the body of Christ
keep us safe for eternal life. (Chimes ringing) ANNOUNCER:
Please join me now in this act
of spiritual communion. Let us join together
in this prayer to Saint Joseph. # And let us pray. May the working of this
heavenly gift, O Lord, we pray, take possession
of our minds and bodies, so that His effects,
and not our own desires, may always prevail in us,
through Christ our Lord. PARISHIONERS: Amen. The Lord be with you. PARISHIONERS:
And with your spirit. And may Almighty God bless you. Father, Son, Holy Spirit. ALL: Amen. Go in peace, glorifying the Lord
by your life. ALL: Thanks be to God. ANNOUNCER:
