walk by faith and not by sight no gracious [Music] name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen the grace of our lord jesus christ the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all and with your spirit today the church remembers uh saint cornelius and saint cyprian one was pope the other was bishop tremendous leaders they witnessed by with their lives to the the power of faith but at the same time they were also tremendous witnesses and examples of god's mercy and forgiveness so it's in that spirit as we remember our sins and ask for god's mercy we invoke their intercession you were sent to heal the contrite of heart lord have mercy lord have mercy you came to call sinners christ have mercy christ have mercy you are seated at the right hand of the father to intercede for us lord have mercy lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life amen let us pray o god who gave saints cornelius and cyprian to your people as diligent shepherds and valiant martyrs grant that through their intercession we may be strengthened in faith and constancy and mercy and spend ourselves without reserve for the unity of the church through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god ever and ever amen a reading from the first letter of saint paul to timothy beloved let no one have contempt for your youth but set an example for those who believe in speech conduct love faith and purity until i arrive attend to the reading exhortation and teaching do not neglect the gift you have which was conferred on you through the prophetic word with the imposition of hands by the presbyteriate be diligent in these matters be absorbed in them so that your progress may be evident to everyone attend to yourself into your teaching persevere in both tasks for by doing so you will save both yourself and those who listen to you the word of the lord how great are the works of the lord the works of his hands are faithful and just sure are all his precepts reliable forever and ever wrought in truth and equity how great are the works of the lord he has sent deliverance to his people he has ratified the covenant forever holy and awesome in his name how great are the works of the lord the fear of the lord is the beginning of wisdom prudent are all who live by it his praise endures forever how great are the works of the lord [Music] is [Music] [Music] come to me all you who labor and are burdened and i will give you rest says the lord [Music] we are [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to luke a certain pharisee invited jesus to dine with him and he entered the pharisee's house and reclined a table now there was a sinful woman in the city who learned that he was at table in the house of the pharisee bringing an alabaster flask of ointment she stood behind him at his feet weeping and began to bathe his feet with her tears then she wiped them with her hair kissed them and anointed them with the ointment when the pharisee who had invited him saw this he said to himself if this man were a prophet he would know who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him that she is a sinner jesus said to him in reply simon i have something to say to you tell me teacher simon said two people were in debt to a certain creditor one owed 500 days wages and the other owed 50. since they were unable to repay the debt he forgave it for both which of them will love him more simon said in reply the one i suppose whose larger debt was forgiven jesus said to him you have judged rightly then he turned to the woman and said to simon do you see this woman when i entered your house you did not give me water for my feet but she has bathed them with her tears and wiped them with her hair you did not give me a kiss but she has not ceased kissing my feet since the time i entered you did not anoint my head with oil but she has anointed my feet with ointment so i tell you her many sins have been forgiven hence she has shown great love but the one to whom little is forgiven loves little he said to her your sins are forgiven the others at table said to themselves who is this who even forgives sins but he said to the woman your faith has saved you go in peace the gospel of the lord i read a fine commentary by a woman a spiritual writer melissa nussbaum which i thought i would share today uh it incorporates cyprian cornelius and cyprian and also the gospel it's called one in mercy it says when the roman emperor decius released an empire-wide persecution against the early christians they were ordered the christians were ordered to surrender sacred text and to offer sacrifice to him refusal meant arrest and often death when the persecution ended the church faced a reckoning with those christians who had lied about or denied their faith and now sought forgiveness and restoration some bishops argued that even deathbed absolution should be denied the penitent but pope cornelius and bishop cyprian were united in mercy toward those whose fear had led them far from home they agreed on a way to reunite the divided church and to restore its unity they were one in forgiveness and remain one in our memory in today's gospel we see the actions of jesus in which cornelius and cyprian surely found inspiration and resolve a sinful woman enters the house of simon where jesus is at table she weeps at jesus's feet bathing them with her tears she wipes his feet dry with her hair this spectacle confirms what simon knows that her sin is an impassable barrier between them she has no place at jesus table it confirms what he suspects jesus then is no prophet or he would recognize her as a sinner and reject her but jesus knows her sin and still receives her he acts out of mercy not ignorance he knows that her extravagant display is one of gratitude for extravagant forgiveness of those whose debts are forgiven one small and one large jesus asked simon which of them will love the creditor more simon answers the one whose larger debt was forgiven cornelius and cyprian encountered pentetence carrying large debts like jesus they said your sins are forgiven and so we are called to imitate cornelius and cyprian to meet the penitent with mercy and to forgive their debts only then can we recognize our own debt and know with what abundance the mercy of christ is poured out upon us [Music] that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to god the almighty father amen receive we pray oh lord the offerings of your people in honor of the passion of your holy martyrs saints cornelius and cyprian and may the gifts that gave them courage under persecution make us too steadfast in all trials through christ our lord amen the lord be with you and with your spirit lift up your hearts you lift them up to the lord let us give thanks to the lord our god it is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for the blood of your blessed martyrs cornelius and cyprian poured out like christ to glorify your name and it shows forth your marvelous works by which in our weakness you perfect your power and on the feeble bestow strength to bear you witness through christ our lord and so with the powers of heaven we worship you constantly on earth and before your majesty without end we acclaim [Music] is [Music] you are indeed holy o lord the fount of all holiness make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall so that they may become for us the body and blood of our lord jesus christ at the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion he took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you [Music] in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me [Music] the mystery of faith [Music] when we eat this bread and drink this cup we proclaim your death [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection we offer you lord the bread of life and the chalice of salvation giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of christ we may be gathered into one by the holy spirit remember lord your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity together with francis our pope timothy our bishop and all the clergy remember your servant stephen thoreau whom you have called from this world to yourself grant that he who was united with your son and a death like his may also be one with him in his resurrection remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face have mercy on us all we pray with the blessed virgin mary mother of god blessed joseph her spouse with the blessed apostles with saints cornelius and cyprian and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your son jesus christ through him and with him and in him oh god almighty father in the unity of the holy spirit all glory and honor is yours forever and [Music] at the savior's command and formed by divine teaching we dare to say our father father who art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven give us this day our daily bread and forgive us of our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil deliver us lord we pray from every evil graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our savior jesus christ for the kingdom and the power and the glory are yours now and forever lord jesus christ who said to your apostles peace i leave you my peace i give you look not on our sins but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will who live and reign for ever and ever amen the peace of the lord be with you [Music] always of god you take away thy sins of the world
