see how that goes though you see how i kind of came down here for a couple different reasons friends i want to explain the way you're gonna save your axe out splitting your wood you see what i'm saying here like this i just want to do a quick little demonstration of that was the perfect swing right there to to explain what i'm talking about the outside of the wood see that there's a prime example i'm just i'm trying to give you these tips so you don't bust up your axis friends especially if you buy an ice axe you know what i'm saying [Music] so [Music] so [Music] man it's beautiful out today friends how we doing everybody uh i'm just looking outside at the sun rays just blasting through the trees it's looking good today i want to get out there but i want to get this video out to you friends these are some techniques on the axe swinging thing we've all know how to swing an axe let's be honest but i'll tell you something and this goes for me and anybody else who's willing to listen to it friends as soon as you think that your techniques are the best and you know and you're done learning that you you know what i mean and and there's nothing more for you to learn is the day you may as well just check out because i'm 52 and i've been swinging an axe around in my hands to the point where it almost feels like a third arm to me now i've been doing it for so long but i'm learning different things different techniques as i age to just morph into my world now and into my life i make nicer axes than i ever have now i i'm i'm more conscious about my edge so i use a chopping block a little more now than i ever used to so friends in this video i show some techniques that help me personally save my axe handles out it's the nature of the beast you're throwing steel at wood with a wood handle on it it's gonna get scuffed here and there let's be honest it is i've seen some pretty bad action under the head there the overstrike scenario there's some techniques in here that you may not have thought of if you're a new guy that's just getting into it or a gal that's just getting into splitting huh little charlie little charlie tazz this is for you girl keep an eye on this stuff it will help you save your axe have an axe and you go oh i love this axe oh i hit it i hate hitting it like that no this will help a ton friends watch enjoy and be kind to one another enjoy all right friends so i just thought i'd pop down just because there's some wood to split here and it's a little mixed bag but i wanted to bring down those shorter little axes that i that i make you know the 28 28 inchers like for instance the one i just made you know friends sometimes i get going in the bunker all by myself in here and it's funny you know it's one of those things friends you just kind of get going and you don't really think about nobody but yourself kind of selfish really if you think about it the incense is burning today but friends sometimes what happens is i get going on something on a project and i i get done i almost be done and it's like bye boy you've just you've completed the the task without sharing it with your friends oh molly that's a wee bit selfish isn't it bully oh friends i just want to take a minute and show you this calendar handle with a a plum tazzy on it the plum tazzy only weighs three and a quarter pound but the thing about it a birthday is spectacular absolutely spectacular friends you know what i mean you could see the incense burning in here and to try it it is a an elm it's an elm handle friends okay look at this thing and if you've ever dealt with red elm it is not it's not super strong it's a good handle um not not the handle to make a real slender handle and kick the livin knaches out of but it's they're gorgeous red elm i've had pretty good luck with the red elm i'll be honest i have but you gotta you know it'll scar up like if you hit the side of it or something or overstrike you're gonna you're gonna destroy it you will it's not like hickory at all but this is a plum with three pounds maybe three and a quarter but i got a great profile really nice profile for splitting it in my opinion uh but it's lovely france the lovely little ax i just put some over strike protection on it today actually myrtle's back in town loving it i don't do a lot of axe builds on the channel anymore but when i'm into an axe that is amazing i've made a few over the last few days i just finished this one red elm it was on a different handle before it was a wedge banger but it didn't it just it wasn't right and now it's right and so i've made a bunch of axis friends with the killinger 28 inch handle i love these handles i just put another one together oh it's lovely oh i'm gonna take oh my see i haven't had this in my hands for a couple hours oh dear friends it's a tazzy it's a plum tazzy the whole unit with a 28 inch handle remember now uh is probably a four and a half it's a four and a quarter pound tool four and a quarter pounds tool the whole tool you see what i'm talking about you see this right here that's called the rock and a sock baby okay all your force is right out at the tips i want you to know that you don't need a ginormous axe to to get this to get this job done you know but it's nice to have your good morning friends so i'm not just gonna sit here and and swing on the axe i'm actually gonna talk about some techniques and i'm gonna bring the camera in really close and show you what i'm talking about like i i get fairly you know descriptive here and i go in and i show you not just talk about it and swing an axe around stick in here because i know this will help you with your with your nice axe handles that you're swinging around or if you're making them and you're scared to swing them this will help and also friends watch where i hit the wood like watch where my axe contacts the wood you know what i'm saying like like what just watch what i do lots of folks pick up stuff just as watch and i'm kind of a visual learner it's not just willy nilly there's a method to the madness see how that goes though you see how i kind of came down here for a couple different reasons friends i want to explain the way you're going to save your axe out splitting your wood you see what i'm saying here like this i just want to do a quick little demonstration of that was the perfect swing right there to to explain what i'm talking about i just want to make sure you guys can see it yes you can lovely okay see the axe do you see what i'm saying there friends how it's see how it's on the outside of the wood and even if i did i think you know what i'm talking about the wood's not traveling through the the split wood it's not traveling through it okay so let's watch instead of instead of going hitting the wood like this in the middle you'll see what i'm talking about see look at that now so if i swing for the middle guess what that would is going to go through my act through the wood and bark it up you see that's why that over strike stuff you see right here this is what i'm talking about so if i hit there it's going through but if i hit out here look at friends this is the way to do it you want to save your save your axe do this okay here's another piece watch watch what i do okay instead of hitting out here it's going to go through and smash this just like that see i hope this makes sense to you friends because it has saved so many axes of mine walk i think see that i split the wood and it ended up now i don't know about the cedar i don't think the cedar is going to split is easy some people think it does but but i'm telling you and i'm here to tell you that it doesn't like it doesn't that's why a guy brings out i i don't even think i'll try this this is when you grab either the wood bullet or something a little more skookum so i i can try it but it probably nope it's just it's not that ordeal nope it's not going to happen wood bullet bamboo handle here we go needed some more stink friends gotta go beside the knots so you guys you got what i'm putting down look at this friends cedar that's why the wood bullet is such a treat because it never gets stuck you can look at this not going right through this way this can be tough one friends see that i literally hit right on the outside of the wood it busted the wood and saved out the handle huge huge like i'm talking right on the outside friends like literally out on the cambium like right out here like that see see where my axe ended up take the time friends take the time to you know what i mean get your get your wood where it should be or you're gonna bust up your axes out of laziness and it's going to be sad ordeal there's no there's no reason for it especially if you're buying nice axes take the time to do it here's that little 28er again okay so so this little 28 inch axe with the right profile friends is lovely it really is lovely look at this guy see it's just dance around the knots okay i think what i'm gonna do is bust this open there we go that's why that flick comes in handy too friends look at how soft that ground is holy cow that was a flick by the way hmm let's put a couple of these under get us level there we go not bad not bad at all and you know what i like about this chopping block it's short front this coming up this little thing coming up right here is one of the main reasons you don't see my handles all barked up friends this is one of the main reasons absolutely you see again what i'm talking about i need to show you this i'm going to show you this because it is very very important well you can see it this is what i'm talking about right there just watch my placement of my axe right now i'm going to zoom in so you guys just watch my placement of acts of my axe right now just for a little bit just for a few minutes you're going over an outlet nice [Applause] all right friends let's do this see what happened you see again friends there's my axe right there the wood didn't even go through the wood like this so i'm just saying if it's something you run into where you're starting to scuff up your axes change your program change it up see you again so i'm telling you look at friends look half the axe that's why i like these big blades it's another reason i like these it's not about just smacking the axe smacking the piece of wood friends hit the bark to you remember i always talk about bark at you so you can see what's going on is there any knots in there right hey again here we are outside there it is it's stuck in the wood right there in the chopping block so it's just when you do something for so long you start thinking of ways to make it better right this is actually a really nice tool oh my goodness friends another good little tip is where you place your block on the chopping block put it at the back of the chopping block so that when you go through it you're not at the front and going through into the dirt or your that can still happen i i sometimes will miss the chopping block after splitting the wood because my wood's too close to me if you put it at the back of the chopping block and leave yourself four five six inches of wood to hit into after especially when you're swinging at the outside of the wood that you're hitting it makes more sense try and get it to the back of the chopping block before you swing does that make sense daniel daniel then you always hunt that's an axe now i actually didn't swing this one yet this is not one i just made it's craziness oh it's lovely oh i'm gonna take oh my see i haven't had this in my hands for a couple hours oh dear friends it's a tazzy it's a plum tazzy the whole unit with a 28 inch handle remember now uh is probably a four and a half it's a four and a quarter pound tool four and a quarter pounds tool the whole tool you see what i'm talking about you see this right here that's called the rock and a sock baby okay all your forces right out at the tips boom absolutely craziness oh yeah it's beautiful friends i can tell right now that pitch boy you get that pitch on you oh yeah see instantly wow so this is all i do friends this you don't need to have use the tool that your axe that your wood needs you to so here is a fairly good size round right friends pretty good size round smaller locks so a guy could swing right now over there but he's gonna split it and he's gonna go through and he's gonna smash his handle up that's what he's gonna do so just make it right for yourself we go you guys with me okay it's amazing what those knots will do to you wood bullet it's all about hitting it in the right spot wood bullet friends notice this ergonomy here it's not good see how i'm not getting full swing this is why i don't like one reason i don't like chopping blocks dropping blocks need to be short you lose your swing i get this now but it i'm not getting full swing i'm probably losing about 10 12 inches of inertia power right okay keep them short amazing see okay now that wood bullet is something else friends i'm not joking yes you guys see what i'm saying there you see the axe i get a good sweat on now yeah you can see it okay good that's kind of what i'm talking about friends plus the outer rings of the of the of the wood it's it it's like how can i explain it it just it's hard to explain like this but the outer rings it pops it but now that now that you've got this like this you think to yourself well now maybe now i'll reach across and and split and i do it sometimes but if i reach across now and shoot for that far end i don't just go all nuggets to the wall i don't do it i will do a slight flick and and lighten up just like like that because i do not want this axe all this wood trying to cram its way through this thing i just won't do it or i will do this you know what i'm saying friends it's split anyway see i i don't know what's over here why am i even hitting it like this i don't know what's here let's look hey i'm way outside of the wood my axe will be mint for as long as i want it to be friends okay see i gave it a flick and there we go el dunski's okay see them sparks that's it we're done actually no we're not we're not done i got one more nice profile a little high so i lose my ump friends you know what i mean like you know what i mean i'm losing i'm losing power i just am if i was up higher that would be cool but i'm not so i got to gather strength somehow so that's when i start flicking my legs around see that i knew it wasn't gonna split so i give it a couple pokes on the outside there this is a beautiful little ax this one just beautiful wow this has got a gorgeous profile and see that knot kind of grows that way see that right to the bottom look at that friends look at you see that again i hope so right through now i can shank the other side off and we're done this party's over there it is done here that's it that's what they should look like when they're done you're sure you're gonna bump it of course you're gonna bump it down again it's the nature of the beast but you can save them out i'll put a little protector on that sucker i like axes peace out see at the house [Music] so [Music] this little axe friend seriously listen it's a lightweight little hickory 28-inch handle um i had a guy actually um send me his killinger handles he bought i think two or three and they were just too thin for him he sent them to me he said they're a little thinner than for what i use they're thin friends the killinger's not joking when he says they're thin they're not for every person out there they're they're for either somebody that wants to make a beautiful beautiful axe sexy little axe um or or or qualified axeman to be frank honestly because i throw four and five pounds head heads on them and i use them and you know i there's a certain way to do it i mean i'm just right okay nothing there just showing you the axes that i just finished using here's another view just a freaking beauty this plum turned out amazing i just finished this wrap today uh and again lightweight axe straight gray just nice split knocks to for for smaller easier wood i can split big wood with it but it's lightweight friends all the weight is out at the end okay now you always have a couple axes with you when you're going to the wood pile don't don't just take your your one little tool with you now i'm gonna i'm gonna be quite frank friends we just made this daddy dong dan dandy nall okay we just made it um wow wow i mean i i've i've swung better profiles um this one is very wedged there's no real convexness to it a little bit do i get my glasses a little bit of convexinus not a ton okay let's look yeah yeah there is a little bit there is yeah but not a ton so uh as far as getting stuck not bad but there's better axes better profiles but that's a lovely lovely splitting tool and i would grab it any any day any day now this thing i didn't even use it because i i know what it's all about this is that one i made on the live feed friends you can feel it in your hands you can feel it you can feel this okay we know about this right but this profile is ridiculous i love it i want to check something out actually um here let's let's just check something out this one matter of fact yeah beauty beauty good yeah now what else ah oh in freaking credible incredible just mind-blowing little laser beam axe so every strike you've seen me take friends has been on the outside of the wood not let's take a little chunk off the outside there and then we'll see which way it's growing oh yeah i see that's why it's growing through this way so i need to hit like this here we go okay again right friends you see that you see that did you just see what happened see sap pitch all over it look at honestly friends just keep an eye out for good profile this might surprise you just telling you okay it's down oh my goodness i'm so freaking happy right now look at this friends this is a nice axe
