- It looks like the diver
is just about suited up. - As we mentioned earlier, we do have confirmation
that Antonio is in the car. - [Elizabeth] The 57 year old Portland man was driving a Subaru Tribeca during the winter storm, Sunday night, when witnesses say, it went over the guard rail
on the Glenn Jackson Bridge. - A private search crew that travels the country
solving underwater mysteries tells us they spotted an
image of a vehicle underwater in the Columbia river yesterday after searching for less than an hour. - A bittersweet day for sure, as we are here with Antonio
Lopez's family here on the boat. We have the Multnomah
County Sheriff's Office and the dive team are actually in the water recovering
Mr. Lopez right now. This day started off at
nine o'clock this morning. - River patrol headquarters,
Doug Chamelick Towing, tell us why we're here. - We are here today in the search for Mr. Antonio Lopez. A very dedicated, hard working man. We were in the midst of
a very horrible storm. Mr. Lopez's daughter
tried to encourage him to stay home, take the day off. But as dedicated as he was
to taking care of his family, he proceeded to go to work. Shortly thereafter witnesses described what they thought to be a purple SUV careening off the Glenn
Jackson Memorial Bridge into the Columbia river. So we're here today to hopefully
find Mr. Lopez's vehicle and also bring them closure
to this horrible tragedy. (somber music) - All right, a few things I want to bring everybody up to speed on. One is the location. So we're currently between where we took off from the boat launch to the 205 bridge. And there's an Island right
here called Government Island. We've been told that the car went in on the main channel side. So the Washington side is the main channel where the boats go up
and down for the barges. And there's going to be some marks that we're looking for up there. We need to also point
out a few other things. One is, we have no drone footage today. We're right next to the
International Airport up here in Portland. The water also is the calmest. That pretty much we could not
have asked for a better day Because we do have Scott, Tacoma Apollo King, who you've seen in a
couple of our videos before is going to be out
here, searching with us. The Coast Guard is going
to be back out here as well as the river patrol. So, today we've got four
boats helping the family. See if we can find Antonio (boat engine revving) - All right. So here's my take on all of this Doug. So right above where the boat is at there. So the Sheriff's boat, we just have here, they have much bigger motor, but right above them, you can see right there and right there on the bridge, two orange marks. And that's where the tires
went over the railing. He's coming from the Washington side, careens, hits that ramp, in fact, we'll flash your footage
that you just took yesterday with what the ice still
looked like there yesterday or the snow Bay. So he was able to just go up and over and then you have a
trajectory of him coming you know, to the South, comes flying over and I'm going to put him right about so where the pillars at my guess right now is you have that, that first light pole there to the right of the boat right now. - Yep. - I'm going to say that we're our search
pattern needs to be right in that area. Good morning Scott! Should be
an easy search today, 15 feet. So yeah, we'll just kind
of loop and stay out of their way, but kind of
run a pattern right there. If you've never been with us
before, this is our sonar. This one's going to be our life scope. So we can actually see
things in real time. So if a car pops up, we're
going to see it here. This is a picture in time. So this is down-imaging. So we're at 14 feet right here. So everything black is
from the top of the boat to the bottom of the river, pointing straight down. This one is side imaging. We're catching 75 feet to the right, 75 feet the left. Anything, this is our
boat, so anything from the boat to the bottom there is going to correlate with
this depth right here. So 1836, 54, 75 is what we're casting. But this is the bottom of the river. - Back off! You need to leave is what I'm saying! We are going to be coming
around right in there. - Yeah, I understand. We're going to be out of your pattern. We're going to help. We're helping you today. Let me come chat with you. (soft music) So they've really questioned
500 feet at this point in time, they gave, uh, they don't want any assistance is what I'm saying. So we're just going to hang on this Island right here for a minute, until they decide to
have lunch or whatever it is they decide to do. - I mean, that's their job. They're there. they don't need something it's too bad. They don't want help. - It's been two days for them already. And they're under a lot of pressure and they pretty much
just basically told us without telling us that
they want to be the ones to find the boat. They're going to be the
only ones in that area. They don't want anybody to outdo them when we're just here to help. - So we're not going to
take witness testimony on their word. And we're just going to keep working the entire bridge here and do our thing. You never know. - Oh oh oh. What the? Camera
on. Camera on. Camera on! They just picked something
up. We got to double check it over here. - I have no idea what
that is. Look at that. - Yeah. Zero. Six feet tall. Like it's almost like it was a body down there. Hey, I want you to scan something. Tell her if we found a body. Just scan right here and tell me what you're seeing. - Something right there. - Yep. - Let's try to snag it. - All right. Yeah. We'll try to snag it. You should be snagging right now. Pull it up, pull up nice and slow. Yep. Pull it up. Like it looks like you have, it looks like you have it. Like it's coming off the bottom with you right now. Slow. Like you have you have it. Don't yeah. Don't don't drop it. Like you hear it at 20 feet right now. Alright I'm going into neutral. Yeah. You're you're snagged on it. Holy frick Doug. Okay you're at 16 feet now with it. We have it. Whatever it is. We have it. - Really? - Yep. - I have bubbles coming up. Lots of bubbles. - Holy frick. - Is it? - It should be there. (engine rumbling) You're within four feet. - You have it. - What is it? Is it? - I can't see it. I can't tell. - Anything in it? That thing had my heart racing, Scott. - Me too. That was pretty impressive. - Holy crap. I mean, you should've seen
it coming up on sonar. - That was dramatic because
the bubbles were coming - I was like, waiting for the carcass or something to come up - I thought for sure he had something more than a tarp. Good work team. Are they going to take lunch yet? So we can go over there and find the car. - They're totally protecting it. They sent the, uh, guy in the red jacket out, you know, he sped
off with the other two. (somber music) - Boom. I found it right here. I found it. There's your orange marks. It comes flying, - Carrying it a little bit. - Yep, momentum. And I'm going to show you on life scope right here. It's going to be coming up. There it is. Let's put the um grappling hook down. Yeah go ahead and drop it Oh we're so close to it too. We're coming over the top of it. Okay so I saw you on the bottom there. You know it's right here? It's right here. - Yeah we know. - All right. You want me to move out of your way? See what we could to offer any assistance from here. You know we
have all the reading stuff. We have all the diving gear. I don't know if they want
to pull up the bridge or they do, they do have an incredible dive team here.
So, I'll give them that. - I don't think they can find it. - I don't think so either. I think they already lost it Well for kicks or we just go tie off over here, hang out. All right. So to bring you up to speed now, what the Sheriff's team is doing is they have now identified
that they know right where it's at. They've put their own eyes on it with their own sonar to confirm. So that's, uh, good news. And then what they're doing right now is they're actually dragging
their magnet as well. So they can mark the
location for the dive team to come in and dive on the, on the vehicle as well. So that's where we're at in the process right now. So where we're at in the process now is this is the Multnomah County Sheriff's office dive team. I think that's, who's coming out. Also just a few minutes ago, a lady by the name of Samantha is up in Camus and she went down to the boat that we launched this morning to go pick up Antonio's brother. So there's a pontoon boat. There's going to be coming up that we'll be able to talk to the family and they'll actually be here on scene to watch the area first, today. So, all right, so you got the first diver in the water. (water splash) That line is coming up. So I believe that the, a diver is getting ready to surface. So there he is. He just surface down at the other boat. Alright, second diver is in the water, you can kind of see
the bubbles right there in front of the boat. See the bubbles right in the right spot. So I'm hoping this time they've been able to look at the car. [Inaudible] - I appreciate it. - Thank you for coming. Nice to meet you. - So to bring you up to speed. I know they started their search here by the pillar this morning. Yeah. They just kept kind of circling around it. We came into follow in behind them. They kicked us off. We ended up doing a search over here, just waiting for them to go to lunch. When they went to the lunch today, to give you an idea of where the car is at pretty much right in front of the boat, is where the car is at right now. - Mhm. - And so they put one diver in so far, the first diver was not, not able to locate it. They have a second diver in right now. I think just from a visual, I think the second diver
is on it right now. What should have happened, We actually marked it. And then they told us to get out of the way. So they made us take our, our marker off of it. So we actually had a mark. So from there they then tried to locate it. They did see it on sonar
with their own sonar. So that way two of us or the three of us today saw it from
three different sonars, three different boats. So right now once they get a diver on it, they should be able to mark it And then they'll be able to tell, whether Antonio's inside of it or not. With diver number two up I'm unclear on whether not they actually have eyes on the car And the reason why I'm saying that, because in my opinion, we should be marking it
at this point in time, whether it's a surface marker or we would have had a line.
That part I don't know. - Were you the ones out on
the blue boat? You were? - Yeah, yeah. I had it marked. Do you want me to mark it again? - Yeah, if you can mark it in there, that'd be perfect. - We're right here on it. Okay drop it. (engine rumbling) You should be snagging it right now. Yep, got it. And then just, hand it straight to him. - This is what I was thinking too. Like you know, 100 feet, 50 mph. - Yeah. - About 50 feet. - Yep. So I have the grappling hook he's on the upstream side. So you can just put a diver right on it and just send him straight down. You'll be right on the car. - Okay. - Diver in. This is third diver. should be just heading straight down. So second diver heading in and normally a second, diver's not going to go in unless they normally, he would be waiting for the other ones to come out. They're moving quick now. What I'm going to say is recovery. At this point, now they need to have
them to cut the seatbelt and pull him out through
the window because the car is upside down. That's what I think. Now I have not spoken with them and that's only my speculation. And then they have that third diver up on the boat, ready to go to rescue one of the other two divers. If anything happens. Right now, if they go back in, I feel confident that they feel that they can pull him out
of a window this evening, that they're not trying
to get a crane truck in here to lift the
car up into position in order to do anything different. So did they give the family the okay? - Uh, They went to the, they went to the sheriff and he confirmed that his car is there. So they're going to get it out tonight. - Okay. Can you check the diver
is just about suited up As we mentioned earlier, we do have confirmation that Antonio is in the car. They are going to make sure they do recover him this evening. The divers look like they're
just about ready to get in. And I'm going to say 20, 30 minutes. We should have a we should have Mr. Lopez back up to the surface. If all goes well. (somber music) [Inaudible] - They just pulled him in. - Yeah, that's definitely bittersweet, let's get ourselves back to the ramp. (engine revving) [Inaudible] [Inaudible] Definitely been a bittersweet
day today, for sure. Thank you, Doug, for being behind the camera in front of it and being out there with
us today and thank you to each and every one of you
for your tips without you, none of this would be possible for us to be sharing these stories,
for us to be out helping these families in the way that we are. So with that, please do keep
Mr. Lopez and their family in your prayers tonight. On that note, we'll see you next time. Bye bye. - [Elizabeth] The medical
examiner identified the remains of Antonio Amaro Lopez earlier today. He leaves behind his wife of 35 years, three daughters, and three grandchildren. (somber music)
