So I Tried Making Discord Emojis... (Big Mistake)

discord emojis we've all seen them we all hate them so today i thought i'd make some in blender and show you the process just in case you ever need to make one yourself which i can almost guarantee that you won't there are two types of discord emojis out there being the still frame kind and the abomination the animation kind let's start this with an easy one that being the simple image emoji you'll need to keep in mind that the maximum resolution you can upload in is 128 pixels so be sure that's what you set your scene to next you'll need an idea for what emoji you want to create to do this it's usually safest to pick from the available genres some notable mentions include making existing emojis out of new characters making existing emojis worse making existing emojis much worse and really anything beyond that point it's just abstraction if you want to create something original that's commendable just don't expect anyone to use them for this demonstration i'm going to go with the first category and make some existing emoji out of a rift model it turns out that you can download most models from games from this website models resource it's perfectly legal i think and it allows you to create your own custom animations out of existing characters and that's pretty cool usually these models will have different states that they switch between and game so you'll need to hide most of them from the outliner unless you want them to look like this which honestly i wouldn't be that surprised so i was originally going to keep this pretty simple for the video but then i remembered that soft body simulations exist holy mother of corrupted normals that's a complicated emotion usually when you download models they'll be made up of these three sided faces called tries which are harder to work with than quads which are four-sided thankfully there's a lazy way to get around this and that's called tries to quads it usually fixes like 90 of it which is enough for this example at least remember that emojis are supposed to convey emotion so be sure to exaggerate everything proportional editing is your friend here so be sure to enable it i'm just gonna oh yeah yeah that's terrible it'll make a great discord emoji to add your new emoji to your server just render it out head to the emoji tab in your settings and add it there at this point you can either get feedback from others or just send it to yourself if you're subconsciously ashamed of it now that i've got this anomaly you ever wonder what's worse than discord emojis animated discord emojis the abominable things that people can do with a single frame of a 32 by 32 image is absolutely insane but even that is no match for people who voluntarily purchase a discord nitro subscription for those of you who go outside nitro is discord's subscription service that allows you to post animated emojis change your user number to 69 and support your favorite servers if you happen to have purchased it been given it as a gift or actually made the conscious decision to apply for discord partnership which gives you nitro for free you're now able to spam as many animated emojis as you want these are a little bit harder to make so listen closely for demonstration i'm just gonna take the popular thinking emoji spin it around in 3d and maybe have it bounce frantically off the walls we'll just see what happens first i've got to create the model itself i'll start with a sphere easy enough and then i'll put a subdivided cube down for the hands and for these you can go as detailed as you want but remember these things are going to be scaled down pretty small so no one will be able to appreciate them same technique for the eyebrows and the mouth just make sure they're roughly aligned with the sphere to duplicate around all the sides i use an array modifier with object offset using this empty axis object which i then rotate 90 degrees depending on how many sides i want next i applied and joined everything to make sure it's easy to animate i started with the rotation using auto keyframe playing through pressing r twice which enables free rotation and then just spazzing the mouse all over the place yep the results are perfect now i just need to add laser eyes start with two shape keys one with small cylinders inside the model and one where the cylinders extend out through the eyes then the idea is you can animate the transition between these two states give it a nice red glowing material turn blue on so it's more chaotic and then turn the background to transparent put even lighting across the whole thing this can be done with very large and very bright air lights in combination with materials with no specularity and full roughness with shadows turned off you can do that from the material side all right all right wrap it up i think it's all done now now all i need to do is make it explode displacement modifier noise texture adjust the scale and the detail level animate the strength blow it all the way up towards the end now it's time to render but hold on we aren't quite done yet the process to make a transparent video is a little bit weird change the output type to png render the animation now you can make videos out of image sequences in blender using the video editor but i'm just going to skip that step entirely and go to a gif conversion site this one allows you to just upload all the images change the frame rate and export very easily and that's how you make an animated discord emoji i'm so glad i went through this to finally understand what the true heroes of our society go through on a day-to-day basis every day normal people go about their lives completely unaware of the guy that right now is making kawaii change for you to spam in your discord server
