[Music] [Music] [Music] do [Music] well you're gonna need to sit closer [Applause] so all right well good morning everyone all right we can do better good morning all right i love it it is a beautiful day and uh i wore my texan shirt last week and they won so i was really really tempted to wear it again this week but i thought someone might catch me on that so um but if they get to the playoffs you might be seeing it a lot i know everybody's thinking that's not gonna happen so that's okay um all right so just a couple of reminders uh out in the foyer first of all if you're a visitor with us this morning we are so glad to have you super excited that you are here with us and joining us for everyone who is worshiping with us online as well we're so glad you're here for those of you who are visiting here in person there's uh bags as you right outside by the main entrance if you would grab one of those on your way out that's our thank you for coming and visiting with us this morning just a couple of ways of reminder the men's day is still coming up in october guys so please sign up just there's only a handful of guys have signed up so far so please get on and register you can do that through with bill out in the lobby and the foyer there or you can do it on the on the church center app um if you want to pay by credit card or whatever you need to do that on the app though so that's the easiest way to do that is register on the app and pay that way otherwise bill can take take your fifteen dollars also for those of you who took boxes for haiti um please get those back to us by the third of october so a couple more weeks to get those in um and and get those collected so so uh oh man i'm just overwhelmed with the res the response that the congregation had i'm not surprised at all by your generosity but i am very overwhelmed by it i appreciate it so much um and when ron and i were talking about numbers like well this is the first time we're doing this how many boxes should we get and uh you know we we kind of settled on 100 thinking that was a good somewhere in the middle kind of range we should have gone a lot higher i think so next year we'll we'll try to break that by a lot but please bring those back by october 3rd this morning david is going to talk to us about our eastern european missions we are still continuing obviously our missions month talking about the different various missions that we are involved in as a church and he's going to talk to us about how we partner in missions and as i was thinking about that i i the ver the passage that came to my mind was john 17. it's one of my favorite chapters in all of scripture where jesus has this amazing prayer to god and and the prayer i mean it is a prayer to god but it really it's a prayer for his followers to hear right it's a prayer for us for those who are there with him in person and for us to overhear what he's saying to god because he talks a lot about who we are as individuals who believe in him and believe in god and so i just picked a few verses here for us to kind of focus us as we think about jesus what he's saying about who we are as a people so john chapter 17 we'll read verses 13 through 21 so jesus says i am coming to you now but i say these things while i am still in the world so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them i have given them your word and the world has hated them for they are not of the world any more than i am of the world that that passage that phrase right there has meant so much to me in my life they are not of this world any more than i am of this world my prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one they are not of the world even as i am not of it so sanctify them by the truth and your word is truth as you sent me into the world i have sent them into the world you hear that as god has sent jesus in the world i have sent them into the world for them i sanctify myself that they too may be truly sanctified and my prayer is not for them alone i pray also for those who will believe those who will believe that is us in me through their message that all of them may be one father just as you are in me and i am in you that is jesus's prayer for us there is a mission in that and it's something that we need to be serious about as christians let us worship our god thank you let's all stand as we prepare to worship this morning we're going to sing [Music] how the savior came from glory how he gave his life jesus my savior forever [Applause] [Music] is [Music] [Music] we have this month to focus on missions both globally and here in our congregation and we just pray heavenly father that you're giving us a heart uh to be engaged in that in all sorts of different ways father we pray that you're with us as we continue in our worship now in christ's name amen please be seated in just a moment thin green is going to lead our communion time together and if you haven't done this at all just a reminder that there is we're going to sing you are holy as we prepare our hearts and minds for this [Music] you are [Music] worthy of praise [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] i will love you all of my days [Music] [Applause] [Music] is [Music] [Applause] [Music] good morning uh we need god in our lives i caught myself getting ready to say the phrase now more than ever but the truth is i've always needed god through every moment every step every joy and every grief that's never changed maybe only my reluctance or misunderstanding of how much i have needed him and realization that i need still need him all the time i remember growing up singing the old hymnal i need thee oh i need thee every hour i need thee oh bless me now my savior i come to thee and now there's a little bit newer version of the song where sin runs deep your grace is more where grace is found is where you are and where you are lord i am free holiness is christ in me this message storing is true and clear how much we need god and jesus to cleanse us of our sins and inequities let's please take this time of communion to remember what jesus did for us and how much we need him in our lives let's pray for the bread dear heavenly father thank you so much for your love and kindness throughout the ages now and forever you have blessed us beyond belief thank you for your son jesus and the love you have shown us all by enabling him to be the pathway to your grace please brush this bread as a reminder of him amen okay let's pray for the cup dear heavenly father please bless this cup and thank you for the memory of your son and your love for us jesus and we pray amen so now comes a time in our service where we have a plethora and a variety of ways to give back to what god has blessed us with so let us pray for the offering dear heavenly father thank you for all the mean blessings you've given to us throughout this year and through our lives everything we have please because of you and thank you for the opportunity that we have right now to give back the things you've given to us jesus let me pray amen good morning church it's so good to be here with you to worship our god our awesome and loving god who blesses us each and every day i do want to share a couple announcements with you this morning and i want to piggyback on len's announcement about the haiti a hope for haiti haiti's children boxes that are due here at the building on the third of october which is two sundays from now uh i've thought about this a lot and i remember when ron came and talked to us about this uh program what an awesome blessing in us for us to be able to help these little children who have very little and we can bless them by helping out also just a reminder this past week we had our men's and ladies bible class on tuesday morning at ten o'clock and men met on at the annex and the ladies met in here in the family room i just would like to encourage you if you have time to come to that that you do that that you join us we have a great great time of fellowship and an awesome time on uh discussing and sharing god's word so i really would encourage you if you can to be there also we ask that you be in prayer for the next few weeks about our search for the specific needs of this church and if and also if it is god's will that we have a certain men who are qualified to fill a duty of deacon and we do ask uh if you have any input that you would like to give to us we'd like to hear from you also one other announcement the adult class has sent out a email on a questionnaire it only takes a few moments to fill it out it's only about six questions and so if you would look online and fill out that questionnaire about the adult classes it's an opportunity for you to express what you would like to study so we asked that you would look at that and just fill that out today is the third sunday of our missionary journey this month this morning david will share with us the good works of the eastern european missions which we have supported for a number of years their mission is to supply people with bibles in their own language what a wonderful blessing to know that we are helping with an opportunity to for others to read and study god's word in their own language something that we don't even have to worry about what it came to serve we all know that and we are also called to serve when the needs of others is known you stepped forward saying father use us as an instrument of righteousness in your hands to touch the lives of the needy in a powerful way and this church here does that and that with this type of attitude doors through which the good news may pass are opened in matthew chapter 25 verses 31-46 jesus proclaims to his followers that they must be a people who allow their hearts to be touched by the needs of others they are to feed the hungry give drink to the thirsty clothe the naked show hospitality to the stranger in need and visit the sick and prisoners this is not a checklist but it's an attitude jesus longs for his followers to develop the ultimate object of of supporting missions must always be the furtherance of the gospel what was jesus attitude philippians chapter 2 tells us the attitude of jesus was that he looked out for the interest of others an old cliche proclaims people don't care how much you know until they know how much you care and i believe that completely many have come to know christ soon after their physical or emotional needs have been taken care of i think of the photo last week that david showed of the friend of his being baptized there was a worker at the water facility so helping those people there in haiti help this man to come to christ one of the greatest responsibilities is remembering why jesus purchased us with his precious blood titus chapter 2 verse 14 says who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and purify for himself a people that are his very own we are jesus very own eager to do what is good god knows the sincere love and commitment to doing good that this body here has embraced over the years you are you are so generous in supporting the missions work here and in caring about those who are less fortunate these four mission organizations the hope for haiti's children water missions the eastern european missions and next week the southeastern children's home has blessed us to partner with them so that more can be helped and more can come to know jesus as a collective effort you can give at any time during this month by noting on your contribution that is specifically for mission work next sunday the 26th of september the entire contribution will be dedicated to the missions god has blessed us with this opportunity to do so much good for so many who are poor and in need i would like to close with this scripture in second corinthians chapter 2 chapter 2 corinthians chapter 9 verses 8 and 9 and god is able to bless you abundantly so that in all things at all times having all that you need you will abound in every good work as it is written they have freely scattered their gifts to the poor their righteousness endures forever thank you so we're going to sing thy word and then we'll hear from david this morning about eastern european missions [Music] still you're there [Music] as long as you are [Music] is [Music] is [Music] i will love is [Applause] [Music] is [Music] good morning i get the great opportunity to speak to you today about eastern european missions and this is the 60th year that they're celebrating their work it's a great mission work and you can tell if you go back 60 years that you're in 1961. so the whole purpose of eastern european missions is to provide free bibles to those who request them and this has been their mission from day one and so you say why was that so important in 1961 well some of you weren't alive in 1961 or you're too young to remember it but many of you do in 1961 was a time which we called the cold war and that cold war the next slide had really heated up next slide it had really heated up during that time and there's great tension in our world there is that mutualist assurance destruction treaties that were involved there were skirmishes throughout the world arms build up a great deal of worry and fear the united states some people were building bomb shelters remember and how to survive a nuclear threat um very fearful time been going on for some period of time world war one go back to the other slide takes like the other world war one some 17 million people had died followed by almost 50 million had died of the virus the spanish flu and then you went right into world war ii and 54 million most of them were civilians were slaughtered during world war ii and all through that period of time you had in soviet union in communist china some 80 million people are slaughtered from that period of time until 1970s so i mean you're looking almost 200 million people in the 20th century during that period of time who are just slaughtered there's fear there's demoralization there's worry as that soviet union continues to spread its communist bloc there's also the purging that begins with lenin and then stalin purges lenin's people and stalin continues that purge and the purging involved labor camps and persecution and confiscations of property and they turned their attention on christianity churches were destroyed churches were divided up leading members of the church were slaughtered or put in labor camps books were banned bibles were banned you could be have your property prop confiscated if you had a bible if you owned the bible if you had a church group meeting you could be put in a labor camp you'd be persecuted you could be shot in front of your family your family would be shot afterwards this person that took place all to try to destroy the church behind the iron curtain the soviet union the amazing thing about that was that the church went underground and continued to grow during that time and the plea was we need bibles we need material and there are people in the united states and throughout the world during that time that were writing out in letter form parts of the gospel on sheets sending them in the mail hoping not to get caught they couldn't type it up because they typed it up communist party would take down your name and your address and they were fearful that if one day the soviet union took over that they would be the first ones purge so if they wrote it by hand they noticed that they could get it through and they're doing very thin sheets trying to do everything they could if you go next slide you notice that after world war ii germany had lost their head germany is divided up into four sections the four zones and you'll see the red zone to my uh to my left and that was the soviet union block the rest were the western allies and all of germany was divided up to be taken care of and in that red zone and throughout stalin created what was called the iron curtain shut everything out of democracy of western influence everything that he could and so they put this block on now if you notice in the red zone go to the next slide there's a city called berlin which was the capital of germany and right in the very heart of that soviet union was this city of berlin and the treaty after world war ii was that berlin would be divided up into four zones just like all of germany ones so you can imagine right there in the heart of that soviet occupation you have western allies you have the soviet part and this is creating a problem for stalin because he's trying to purge and continue to destroy anything that was against him fearful of the westerners coming in as well and so he begins a blockade in 1948. i'm not giving you a history course giving the background as to or but 48's the blockade to try to starve out the western allies and there the western allies had the berlin airlift tons of food and fuel and supply and broke the siege of the soviet union and that created then in 1949 for a while some free movement back and forth between east and west you could take a trained subway you could eat theaters do whatever you wanted to visit relatives and that went on for a period of time but as more and more more happen as stalls become even more restrictive the east germans that are going over are not coming back and this is absolutely uns so that he cannot tolerate and so the restrictions become tighter and tighter and so from 1948 to 1960 some three million east germans and people who get out of the soviet union just walked through east germany to west germany and there they were having their freedom most of them were professionals they were doctors they were educated engineers people at stalin needed for his plan of growth in his plan that he had and so by 1958 after stalin's gone and the new premier's in there is tremendous tension in berlin particularly that east west opening into the soviet union used to be three checkpoints and one checkpoint checkpoint charlie was where all the tension used to be but after that they now incorporate 12 checkpoints and slow it down considerably to make sure people cannot get out and yet there continue to be that desire as tensions creating more and more and more closing of that area the need to get materials and helping the underground church in those areas in the soviet soviet union and so by 1961 june of 1961 19 000 people left in july 30 000 people left and then in august 12 18 000 on that single day left august 12th it was during that period of time six young couples came from vienna you'll see the next slide and there you have as you said the young couples yes okay the six young couples they don't look young because the old picture they're very young back then they had come from vienna there was a missionary minister in that berlin area called bob hare who needed help it was becoming overwhelming the work that needed to be done these six couples in vienna applied for a student visa and they were going to go as students they got their visa and never went to school they walked right into this situation that's going on in 1961 and all the tension all the stress that's there and the closing down and the panic and the fear between the two cities about what would occur and in fact what happens is they begin to say we're going to work the network of the underground churches and they need bibles there's bible requests what can we do to get bibles to them and that was what they particularly began to focus upon and then august 13th 1961 happened and on august 13th 1961 overnight soviet union created the berlin wall separating east from west berlin and now you had east germany and west germany and now the mission was clear to this group now called eastern european missions we have to get bibles smuggled in into soviet union through east germany and elsewhere so the church can thrive and whatever request we ever receive we're going to do everything we can to get those bibles to them and they smuggled bibles in so many ways you cannot imagine just unbelievable ways that they were doing it to smuggle in with the risk of getting caught either themselves or the people on the other side who were helping them when they gave the bibles to of imprisonment of labor camps torture or death and they continued to do so i always thought it was interesting that during that time as people are hungry for the word here in the united states we are taking the word of god out of our public doing more and more during the same period of time in 1962 one year later texas church provided the money for a printing office machine put in vienna that now was able to print bibles in different languages that they could get at the time by 1972 10 years later a group in florida bought a modern printing press and there they were able to use that and even be able to distribute more bibles and print in greater languages by 1985 if you know the soviet union history there becomes more of an openness they begin to accept more of western ideas and trying to become more open to the western way and so by the spring of 1989 soviet union has opened up more and more go back the next slide for a second i'm sorry it's my fault not yours she's trying to follow me she has no idea where i'm going so so eastern european missions has an invitation in the spring of 1989 by moscow would you please send us 50 000 bibles in russian what a difference right they kept working with them distributing those bibles to the moscow there's still tremendous amount of pressure revolutions in 1989 if you know your history and you lived through it there were revolutions breaking out all behind the iron curtain all over the place hungary romania everywhere czechoslovakia and as those are breaking open it's now allowing people from east germany to flee in and they're able to now get out and so there's a greater restriction taking place the church is coming under more persecution but by finally now the next slide 11 989 the berlin wall falls east germans see their opportunity and the wall falls and now greater opportunities than ever before with that opening existing eastern european gets more and more requests for bibles and more and more involved in that in fact in 1990 one year later from this they put one ad in a russian newspaper if you would like to free bible let us know that single day they had 170 000 requests in 1990 for that can you imagine 1990 and that request just started going an eastern european mission said our mission's not over there's still so many and from 1990 to 2002 the public schools throughout russia and other countries in the eastern european missions or eastern european area began to implement the bible into their public education curriculum now think about what we were doing in 1990 to 2002 in our country we're making sure it's not being taught in our curriculum it's being taken out of our school system we've become more and more secular or even worse today than we were back then but during this same period time god is working in this period of time for example in 1996 the russian minister of education requested for eastern european missions to provide them the newcomers guide to the bible along with as many russian bibles that they could have translated and sent to them in 1998 in altai russia every public school implemented the bible in russian as part of their education curriculum in the 2000s as more and more missionaries and worked had have been focusing more upon getting the doors open had left to go to other areas eastern european mission made a decision that they would just focus just on eastern europe and soviet union and not spread out any further and so by 2002 many of the schools throughout all those former soviet blocs are using the bible in their public schools in their languages for example in the russian state of tomsk all public schools by 2002 were using it as their part of their curriculum the ukraine in that period of time around 2005 50 they now had a request to have it in their language from eastern european missions and 50 percent of those public schools now use them from 2005 to 2016 everything changed they had stopped smuggling some time ago but long gone were the days you had to smuggle them in now you have requests from the states you have warehouses you have truckloads you have all sorts of infrastructures now that is now set up to get bibles to wherever they need to go this is just one shipment to croatia back in 2018 just one shipment there's been many more since then one area in particular and this is what when we support them in our work this is what it's doing all across that period of time smuggling's gone there's open distribution eastern europe is becoming more and more part of this as well i want to talk to you about one guy named guntas guntes is now 76 years old he's from the ukraine when he was a young man he got involved became a christian through eastern european missions bible distribution he then devoted himself so when they would send bibles that he could smuggle them in as a teenager and a young man into those areas and he did that today he still is a distributor of bibles and he's still working with the church and he lives and his grandson lives with him and his grandson of course is now an open time is able to distribute as well the bibles that are part of that in 2005 ukraine mission did a national broadcast of the gospel of jesus christ churches of christ were involved in that and from that one broadcast hundreds of churches were planted all throughout the ukraine supported the church of christ throughout the area bible's distributed people untold numbers baptized hundreds of churches planted and today goon distills works with church leaders but no longer in secret this is one group of church leaders at a open conference where they meet regularly about the church plantings throughout and what they need to do and the distributions of the bible most public schools in ukraine today also have the bible as their curriculum and i said church conferences are meeting everywhere and the church is growing in that area so today in eastern european missions here we are and if you notice that now it's not just being printed in one area notice that it's being printed in most countries you'll notice how many countries are involved now it's now printed it's in 30 countries in that area printed in 20 different languages this is what they're doing even today in 2016 if you remember the syrian refugee crisis they made sure as that was going on that they printed in arabic and farsi the new testament and they met those refugees coming out of those areas in greece and they gave them bibles and established congregations to work for those groups that were coming out as refugees that's what they're doing another thing i want to talk to you about is what's called the pioneer youth camps now the pioneer youth camps on my right that was under stalin every youth during the summer for a certain period of time had to go to their youth camp where they were indoctrinated in the communistic ideas there is absolutely nothing that goes with communism or marxism that has to do a freedom or a buildup of any individual it's absolutely anti-christian anti-freedom and absolutely destroys and slaughters wherever it goes it's a shame today our young people don't know that or many people in our country today don't know that i'm about to preach better stop so but that's a shame because that's exactly what happens we need to know that they were indoctrinated year after year to become that now ukraine went to the eastern european mission several years ago about 15 years ago i think at this point now and said would you take over those camps for us and would you teach our children the bible every summer 500 former indoctrination camps became 500 christian camps for children do you think that's made a difference absolutely still does untold stories of the number of those that have gone through that are now missionaries christian men and women christian homes distribution just great christians all part part of that it's a beautiful story that's there today the staff is no longer that couple those six young couples one of the ladies is still involved in teachers but this is the staff there are 12 full-time staff workers in the united states very low when you think about what they're doing the guy in the middle right here that's daryl daryl was a youth minister at the washington street church christ when i was there back in the 80s and daryl has been involved with him for several years now and he's he's the one that works with us on this but all those are involved in it 12 full time one part time in eastern europe they have 10 part-time staff so when you think about what they do and the good they do the overhead is very very low they have tremendous amount of work very busy they have hundreds and hundreds of volunteers that help throughout the year what's going on so here's what they need they need our help what can i do so the next slide is they need our support they need our support 2nd corinthians 9 verse 6 says remember this whoever sow sparingly will also reap sparingly and whoever sows generously will also reap generously they have more requests even today than they have money and the number one thing that we can do as christians supporting christians is to be very generous to give them what they need so when those requests come in they can be met and i hope that you'll consider doing that and you will do that next sunday is our mission sunday you don't have to wait the next sunday you can go online and give specify its mission you can give by mail or check or today whatever see one of the elders give them a check if you want to but next sunday everything that's given is going towards missions and one of those that we'll be supporting this year like we have since 2016 is the eastern european missions and i hope that you'll keep that in mind now what's beautiful about this is the number of baptisms that have occurred over the years through this unnumbered baptisms taking place there is a brochure out in the lobby where the visitors baskets are and if you'd like to pick one up you can read some of those stories about conversions and baptism i encourage you to do that if you'd like to find out more about that because they are fulfilling the mission that jesus gave us and that is to go into all the world and make disciples of all nations baptize the name of the father the son and of the holy spirit and making disciples of them and that's what we're going to do now we're going to close by showing a video and after that video we're going to sing a song and then we get to see sydney get baptized that's going to be cool is it so let's let's go ahead and watch the video so so [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] me [Music] [Applause] [Music] is [Music] [Applause] oh [Music] [Music] house there's a place [Music] [Music] jesus died for me [Music] is [Music] there's a place for me i [Music] i am you are for me god against me i am who you say i am i am chosen not forsaken i am who you say i am you are for me not against me i am who you say i am [Music] set free always free yes i am [Music] [Music] [Music] there's [Music] [Music] amen thank god that we can be children of god and that there is room for us um can someone make sure that the kids are coming i want the the the children if someone hasn't gone back there yet with someone please grab them um so uh many of you know that it was just a few weeks ago that i was i had the honor and pleasure of baptizing two of my children and um the gillespies reached out to us and said hey you know we've got a couple of kids who are thinking about it and want to talk about that too can we you know how can we study with them and so kara uh reached out and and i know talked with kristin quite a bit and they've been going through a study and sydney has decided to be baptized and if you don't know sydney you will not meet a sweeter girl than miss sydney she is such a sweetheart she gives me a hug every time i see her and i appreciate it she's such a beautiful young girl so cindy i'm going to ask you the same question i ask everybody when they get baptized do you believe that jesus christ is the son of god yes and do you want him to be the lord of your life yes amen that's such a wonderful decision that you've made we're going to baptize you now [Applause] that lay between us how high the mountains i could not find in desperation i turned to heaven and spoke your name into the night [Music] then through the darkness your loving kindness tore through the shadows [Music] jesus christ [Music] such boundless grace [Music] [Applause] [Music] i'm yours forever [Music] praise the one who set me free [Music] i want a new thing i know jesus christ [Music] [Applause] [Music] you have broken every chain there's salvation in your name jesus christ [Music] all right so can i see sydney [Music] [Laughter] we did not build this baptism in with short people in mind all right so sydney because you have confessed your faith in jesus christ and because you want him to be not only your savior but the lord of your life we're going to now baptize you in the name of the father the son and the holy spirit for the salvation of your soul for the forgiveness of your sins so that grace can be a part of your life and you can belong to this church in a very real way and not just this congregation but the church around the world all right all right [Applause] [Music] i [Applause] go to the baptism folder for just a second i think there's a song in there we can sing sometimes technology fails us let's all stand we're gonna um actually you know what we've got all to us there in the last song do we have that available all right here we go we'll sing this song and cindy and uh prepares to come out then we'll gather around here bill will lead us in a closing prayer and we can welcome sydney to the family of god precious [Music] jesus [Music] you're the problem [Music]
