of that source of mercy forgiveness and compassion lord jesus you show us how to lead lord have mercy christ jesus you remind us if we want to be number one if we want to be the greatest if we want to be ali we have to serve one another christ have mercy and lord jesus you put us in touch with our selfish ambitions lord have mercy may our good and loving god then have mercy on us forgive us our world have mercy on us [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] us [Applause] [Music] you with the holy [Music] of spirit the father [Music] [Applause] so let us pray a god who founded all the commands of your sacred laws upon love of you and love of neighbor grant that by keeping your precepts and your ways each one of us may merit to attain eternal life all through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever as we listen to the readings today first reading from wisdom you know it's it seems like it's it's the foreshadowing of jesus and it is in some way but it's also about anybody who leads with integrity and authenticity with anyone who speaks truth to power and the price that is paid and then that second reading where we hear about what it is that goes on within us that makes us that way so let's stay open and see where that stuff resides within us a reading from the book of wisdom the wicked say let us beset the just one because he is obnoxious to us he sets himself against our doings reproaches us for transgressions of the law and charges us with violations of our training let us see whether his words be true let us find out what will happen to him for if the just one be the son of god god will defend him and deliver him from the hand of his foes with revilement and torture let us put the just one to the test that we may have proof of his gentleness and try his patience let us condemn him to a shameful death for according to his own words god will take care of him the word of the lord [Music] the lord upholds my life [Music] lord upholds my life [Music] oh god save me by your name [Music] by your power defend my cause o god hear my [Music] of my mouth [Music] r [Music] seek my life [Music] god [Music] my soul i will sacrifice to you with a willing heart and praise your name for it is good [Music] a reading from the letter of saint james beloved where jealousy and selfish ambition exist there is disorder and every foul practice but the wisdom from above is first of all pure then peaceable gentle compliant full of mercy and good fruits without inconstancy or insincerity and the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace where do the wars and where do the conflicts among you come from is it not from your passions that make war within your members you covet but do not possess you kill and envy but you cannot obtain you fight and wage war you do not possess because you do not ask you ask but do not receive because you ask wrongly to spend it on your passions the word of the lord so [Music] oh [Music] who you are [Music] are spirit and life [Music] oh the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to mark so jesus and his disciples left from there and they began a journey through galilee but he didn't wish for anyone to know about it you see he was teaching his disciples and he was telling them that the son of man is to be handed over to other men and they will kill him and three days after his death the son of man will rise [Music] but they didn't understand what he was saying and they were afraid to question him so they came to capernaum and once inside the house he began to ask them what were you guys talking about along the way what were you arguing about on the way but they remained silent you see they had been discussing among themselves on the way who was number one who was the greatest so then he sat down and he called the twelve and he said to them if anyone wishes to be number one if anyone wishes to be first you shall be the last of all in the servant of all and then taking a child he placed it in their midst and then putting his arms around it he said to them whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me and whoever receives me receives not me but the one who sent me the gospel the good news of the lord maureen it's so nice to see you with your family your uncle kevin from indianapolis indianapolis glad you guys the chicago crew is here maureen has been uh singing with us for the past few years and you're heading out back to where back to chicago so we love you we miss you we have this great compliment here uh and it's just good for you to be with us and for us to be with you today so and cece i can't believe how tall you're getting what happened over a year and a half huh geez you're taller than i am almost it's great i gotta be honest with you every time this gospel comes up it's on a three year cycle i immediately go back to like 1972 1973 ford country squire station wagon with the paneling on the side you with me anyone the three boys the three uni boys in the back seat and we'd be messing around and my mother all 411 however you know that little head that kind of came over the steering wheel she'd be like hey knock it off i'm like how did she see that you know i said mom how do you know this she says i have eyes in the back of my head i said oh i'm looking that's when i realized what a rear view mirror in a car was really for huh to keep an eye on those guys in the back seat see what they're arguing about and what they're thinking about and what they're doing it reminds me of the gospel today these guys are arguing along the way who's going to be number one who's the greatest i put in my little ali reference but again i can tell that i'm aging myself as i use these old references huh the greatest today's about leadership you want to be the greatest stop arguing about it who's number one who's number two who's number three you want to be the greatest you want to be a success you want to be number one serve do something good for somebody else jesus was interested in leadership in that way not a leadership that dominated and it squashed others so that he could be propped up we see that leadership demonstrated all the time in the church in politics corporations just in the world it's a worldly leadership but jesus says you want to be number one in my corporation you're going to serve you've got to take care of those kids and when he takes the child and puts the child in their midst he's basically saying because remember this a child was vulnerable a child had no status take care of people who are vulnerable who need our help who have no status who have a voice but maybe that voice doesn't get heard step up for them lead in this way so he pulls them aside and he starts to hammer into them what's going to happen now think about this here we are in 2021 we've got 2 000 years of tradition behind us religious faith background and tradition look up in these beautiful stained glass windows where the sun's kind of coming in we got people who've gone before us who've kind of modeled for us a way to be you know we read their stories and you're like huh they were regular people just like us but they somehow connected with jesus in a way that their lives shifted and they made a difference in the world so we venerate them we uphold them we put them into the who's who of sanctuary stained glass windows huh but they have stories to tell because they were about servant leadership they probably didn't use those words but that's what they were about so jesus tries to tell the crew that he was with the twelve this is how it's got to be remember last week the son of man must be what rejected suffer be killed and rise on the last day he hammers it again today guys listen the son of man must suffer he will be killed but after three days he will rise what did peter say last week no way lord we're not gonna let this happen to you he rebukes jesus well then jesus turns around like mom and dad in the car with the rear-view mirror and rebukes us right and he says get behind me satan remember that from last week no wonder this week these guys were afraid to ask him anything remember that's what we just heard you know they were they were jockeying back and forth but they were afraid to ask him what this dying and rising meant because they saw what happened to peter it's like when the older brother gets in trouble the two younger brothers have a have a a leg up you know they they know well he's already gone through that so we have to find another way i think i can't see through the mask the are these landing anywhere and all right that might just be my family you know he's trying to get it into their heads that this is going to happen and so i'm imagining that they're thinking like well if he's saying this who's going to carry on the organization who's going to be in the top spot so they were arguing who's going to be the greatest it's human ambition isn't it in fact didn't james and john have their mother kind of come in and do a little bidding for them at some point doesn't she kind of sidle up to jesus at one point pull him aside and she says hey listen when you go your way can you make sure my sons are the two senior vice presidents you know in other words she says can one be sitting at your left and at your right and she he says that's not that's not mine to give you know what is that ambition in all of us to be in those places with our 2000 years of tradition telling us this is the example to follow come out of yourself don't be so self-centered we still have a tough time with it so to be the greatest we got to be the last that's true leadership now every single one of us in this church i think is in a leadership position just by the virtue of the fact of who we are as human beings we can all lead and many of us are followers right we listen huh there's some but we all have leadership capabilities we all have the ability to welcome somebody into our midst who's vulnerable who needs protection somebody who's homeless and not just homeless because they don't have a domicile but somebody who might not be at home with themselves who've lost a sense of their goodness their beauty their dignity and their worth somebody who's hurting in our leadership then comes into play in the way that we interact with them and jesus goes if you receive me you're not receive them you're receiving me and you're not just receiving me you're receiving the one who sent me so there is always an opportunity to receive god when we take care of somebody else when we use our leadership in that way that's true leadership servant leadership and that's what he's telling all of us today two thousand years later to strive for remember as i said we've got this two thousand year tradition that tells us we believe that there's something more after the last breath they did not have that back then they had to be scratching their heads saying what's he talking about rise on the third day look at us with our tradition we still wrestle with that trust me just because we're all in this church today that doesn't mean we're all set sure and confident that there's something after the last breath i'm telling you i'm in the business i listen to people and those fears exist and i want to be like you know what if anything trust in that believe in that not my words his words there's something more there's a gospel i think in john he goes do you think i ever would have told you that i was going to go and prepare a place for you if i wasn't that's jesus saying that to us and to them he says and if i go and prepare a place for you know that i'll come back i'll take you with me so that where i am you also may be i believe those words do you and in believing those words does that somehow mitigate our fears lessen our fears even if we don't see exactly what it's going to be like guess what it's part of the journey don't we all like excitement and surprises but then people like yeah yeah but i don't know if i'm going up but going down and i want to say this chill out on that man you're a good person we're good people even though we have messed up in life but if we believe what we did at the beginning of the mass lord have mercy christ have mercy lord have mercy if we believe in the infinite mercy and understanding love and forgiveness of god does that begin to wash away and dilute those fears i know i'm off the card but i really want you to think about that stuff what is it that you and i believe they had no tradition behind them we have 2 000 years like thomas he's saying to us stop unbelieving believe all right back to the cat now while we are still here on this earth what about how we live our leadership what is it to be number one those who strive to be the greatest in number one ready where mo their motivation is only their own gain with their advancement and self-ambition are paramount that is not healthy leadership in the way that jesus models for us and those kind of people or that ready in all of us that that stuff in all of us including in this guy doesn't like it when servant leaders real true selfless servant leaders are in their midst in fact it's threatening at their core those who wield dominating power know their own weakness if you played sports you know the best defense is a good what you become offensive you take the offensive track those who wield dominating power not servant leadership power they know they intuit their own weakness it's from an insecure place it's from an empty place they know that they're susceptible to anyone who has greater power so therefore they have to hold tight to their own fragile supremacy and deep down they understand that their control is only limited to the effectiveness of the threat that they can muster and then people like that again in corporations and politics in the church society they gain a following by inspiring fear which doesn't generate true loyalty i found that really interesting it's the opposite of servant leadership people who lead like that are threatened by servant leaders just think about it in light of that first reading from wisdom and this is thousands of years old the same dynamic let us beset the just one because he's obnoxious to us he's a pain in the you know what he sets himself against our doings he's reproaching us for our transgressions of the law what are you kidding me let's find out what will happen to him and then with revilement and torture they try his patience they condemn him [Music] to a shameful death and then they say yeah let god take care of you said god's going to be with you or even james in that second reading where jealousy and selfish ambition exist this disorder in every foul practice but then he says true leadership the jesus leadership in life the wisdom from above isn't jealous it isn't insecure envious or ruthless in fact it's healthily self-confident it's peaceable it's gentle and compliant full of mercy and good fruits it's constant insincere and then james dials down just a little bit more and he says so where do those wars within you and me come from where do those conflicts come from jealousies rivalries animosities insecurities what's all that about you covet you want things because you don't have them and so you got to take them you fight new wage the same stuff was going on back then that goes on now what happens with those insecurities that you and i have trust me i have them we all have them do we ever observe what it is that propels us from those places of insecurity i can't stand it when i see it myself in fact i don't even want to see it like most of us don't but that's the stuff to see and then i think right there invite jesus call on the holy spirit the wisdom from above to illuminate to come into that place something as simple as like come holy spirit i know i'm being envious right now i know i'm being jealous i know i'm insecure i know i'm feeling threatened whatever it is that we're feeling come holy spirit it's literally like breathing the spirit into that place try it experiment with it all right because then i think it helps us as we go forward but jesus with the eyes in the back of his head the rear-view mirror huh knows our selfish ambitions that's why i say call on the spirit he knows our inclinations he knows what we argue about within ourselves and with others especially about being the greatest and number one egocentric moves so this week i'll leave us with a couple of things tap into jesus and don't just tap in to jesus or the spirit but tap in and then develop the relationship with him like the disciples did in the gospel and vice versa he wants to be in relationship with you and me i think jesus desires this deeply first question where are you and i in the back seat of the car regarding our own selfish ambition in life how do you and i see ourselves as leaders authoritarian dominating dictatorial my way the highway this is challenging stuff especially if you've you know it's worked for you or me and now what is it to look at ourselves as servant leaders to be number one as we take care of each other what is our style of individual leadership look like in life are we peaceable are we effective clear but not dominating and then lastly where can you and i lead this week at work at school at home in church wherever we might be and receive someone in jesus name and serve them that's being number one in the organization real quick i was just thinking i was reading the paper this morning about uh the marriott the copley and how you know they're becoming more efficient business-wise as so many places are and the hospi the hotel industry in boston took such a hit as it did throughout the country but i started reading the stories of these people who've been working there for 17 years 23 years with their plans and hoping to work in overtime and doing doing more that the bosses asked and then they've just been cut loose and i know there's always two sides to a story but i i thought to myself for all these people who have served us that we've taken for granted stayed in those hotel rooms trashed those hotel rooms never left a tip maybe these people who now have no jobs and they're like hot i don't know how i'm getting my mortgage paid i don't know how i'm going to do this i had four more years and then i was able to get free marriott stays for the rest of my life and i've been there for i just hear those stories so let's keep in mind those who have served us on so many levels and who are now on the short end of the stick uh just with the economy and all of that it's it's important to think about that stuff because all these hotels and places are right in our midst and uh there are real people who are affected there so just thinking about that but that's another homily let's stand let's profess our faith huh what do we believe in i believe in one god the father the almighty and the maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible and i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begone not made but consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became human for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and he rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets and i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen hey the disciples the apostles needed help along the way we're the modern day disciples right we need help along the way and it's through our prayer that we ask the lord to continue to guide us in his ways so let's come before god now with our needs for us as church that we may lead as jesus does and be servants of one another particularly of those in need we pray lord hear our prayer for spiritual freedom that god will awaken us to our insecurities jealousies selfishness and desires that distract us and help us choose ways to be instruments of god's peaceable mercy and compassion we pray lord hear our prayer for clearer recognition of healthy and unhealthy ambitions that we may be aware of the motivations that steer in our hearts and respond to those that lead us closer to god and towards greater wholeness we pray lord hear our prayer for the members of congress that god will give them wisdom and insight as they address the budgetary and infrastructure issues before them we pray lord hear our prayer for greater recognition of the harm being done to the earth that world leaders and each of us may take meaningful steps to curtail the environmental damage of the planet and work to protect the poor and vulnerable from its effects we pray lord hear our prayer for all who are ill particularly those with take this all of you and eat of it this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving you thanks he gave it to his disciples he said take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood it's the blood of the new the eternal covenant it will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins years right when i think back to ordination and when you just sit in the pews and you listen to those words that you had no clue about when you were actually going through it you know like when you get married you make those vows and promises it's a whole different story then than it is now right 30 years later and he's like oh i know what that means now and all in good ways right yeah it was so
