tough week all of you we we hold one another in these ways even though we don't actually know one another necessarily we hold one another in heart in prayer and that's what this is all about today well we're going to hear some heavy duty stuff today in the readings i really haven't been looking forward to the homily so anybody who wants to give the guest homily please come up and you cannot talk but you'll hear about that in a few minutes but in the meantime we joined together in celebration and joy as we invoke the one who brings us together and loves us into life in the name of the father the son and the holy spirit amen the lord be with you let's settle our spirits now take a breath let's relax let's place ourselves in each other's presence and in the presence of mercy forgiveness and understanding lord jesus you meet us where we're at you know the complexities of life and relationship lord have mercy christ jesus you come to soften the hardness of our hearts christ have mercy and lord jesus you remind us that we're not to be letter of the law people but spirit of the law people lord have mercy so may our good and loving god then have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to new and eternal life [Music] glory to god in the highest [Music] we adore you we glorify you we give you thanks for your great glory lord god heavenly king o god almighty father glory to god in the highest [Music] lord jesus christ [Music] take away the sins of the world have mercy on us you take away the sins of the world receive our [Music] have mercy on us [Music] [Music] jesus christ in the glory of the father amen [Music] [Applause] so let us pray almighty and ever-loving god creator of every living thing who in abundance of your kindness and love surpass the merits and even the desires of all those who entreat you we ask you to pour out your mercy upon us to pardon us and to give what prayer does not even dare to ask all through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever as we listen to this first reading it's one we've heard a gazillion times but let's listen on the deeper levels is it meant to be taken factually or is it trying to tell us about a deeper truth a reading from the book of genesis the lord god said it is not good for the man to be alone i will make a suitable partner for him so the lord god formed out of the ground various wild animals and various birds of the air and he brought them to the man to see what he would call them whatever the man called each of them would be its name the man gave names to all the cattle all the birds of the air and all wild animals but none proved to be a suitable partner for the man so the lord god cast a deep sleep on the man and while he was asleep he took out one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh the lord god then built up into a woman the rib that he had taken from the man when he brought her to the man the man said this one at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh this one shall be called woman for out of her man this one has been taken that is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife and the two become one flesh the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] lord bless the days of our lives [Music] may the lord all bless days of our lives [Music] blessed all those who fear the lord and walk in his ways by the labor of your hands you shall eat you will be blessed [Music] [Applause] [Music] us for the day your wife like a fruitful vine in the heart of your house your children like shoots of thee all live around your table [Music] us all the days may the lord bless us [Music] lord bless you from may you see jerusalem all the days of your life lord bless us [Music] [Music] may you see your children's children on israel [Laughter] [Music] [Applause] of our lives [Music] a reading from the letter to the hebrews brothers and sisters he for a little while was made lower than the angels that by the grace of god he might taste death for everyone for it was fitting that he for whom and through whom all things exist in bringing many children to glory should make the leader to their salvation perfect through suffering he who consecrates and those who are being consecrated all have one origin therefore he is not ashamed to call them brothers the word of the lord wow [Music] oh [Music] foreign [Music] you have the words of everlasting life [Music] [Music] will the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to mark so the pharisees approached jesus and they asked is it lawful for a husband to divorce his wife you see they were testing him so he said to them in reply what did moses command you and they replied moses permitted a husband to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her but jesus told them it's because of the hardness of your hearts that he wrote this commandment from the beginning of creation god made them male and female and for this reason a man leaves his father and mother to be joined to his wife and the two they become one flesh they're no longer two but they're one flesh therefore what god has joined together no human being must separate so in the house the disciples again questioned jesus about this and he said to them whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her and if she divorces her husband and marries another she commits adultery and people were bringing children to him that he might touch them but those disciples rebuked them and then when jesus saw this he became indignant and he said to them let the children come to me don't prevent them for the kingdom of god belongs to such as these and amen i'm telling you whoever does not accept the kingdom of god like a child will not enter it and then he embraced them and he blessed them placing his hands on them the gospel of the lord you know my spirit should be up you know we got all these animals in here today you know we're gonna bless them and it's a pets always bring such joy and comfort and it's really uh it's great but i don't know i've just been wrestling with this this gospel all week and it's it's better for a real theologian to kind of unpack it for what it's about because it's a multi-layered thing and my fear is that we'll hear it and listen to it just on a surface level and then actually unconsciously will make all these judgments on others it i really believe it happens like in a split-second way and it happens unconsciously that we make these judgments divorce bad bad bad broken failed blah blah it creates shame it's just that's what it did in me you know what i mean and i know better like i'm like wow how quickly does that happen because i think it's ingrained in us i want to say as catholics but as christians and as people who follow the gospel i don't know did you do what did you think what did you feel what did you experience hearing that and then when you listen to people's stories in my business huh or all of our business when we when we know so many people whose marriages have been so difficult and so challenging with those ruptures and repairs ruptures and finally the rupture wins out over the repair happens there's something that goes on in the family things change but what goes on beneath the surface in our own hearts and i think that's what jesus is getting at today don't let that judgment that narrow letter of the law thinking don't let that rule when things go sideways and go awry for whatever reason don't become a letter of the law person when it comes to this because it's too easy to say it's a black and white issue you stay this way or not and if you don't then you're in deep trouble what about the complexities and the nuances of relationships even me the unmarried guy guess what i get a little window in the complexities nuances of marriages so this can't be just taken on a surface level so buckle up i'll have you out before the game starts at 8 20 tonight and we're going to go through no guilt no shame any of you who are divorced no guilt no shame no guilt no shame things fall apart again even there there are nuances and complexities as to why things fall apart and we all know the part that we play in relationships the success of our relationships the success of our marriages the breakup of our marriages in our relationships we all have to work out that stuff but i want to say there is no shame no guilt i know people who come to church who've been divorced and have remarried and they've never come to communion again because that's the church rule and i go back to pope francis who says the church in coming to communion is not for the perfect it's the field hospital it's a place where we go to commune with the one who heals us helps us to regroup and go forward who nourishes us on the deeper level i always want to err on that side because i don't think it's an errance i think that's the way jesus was and i think that's what he's saying here today at the same time this is not me standing up here saying anything goes who cares about marriage who cares about rules and reagan not even close there's something profound to two people coming together committing their lives to each other loving each other on the heart level and going forward that's what god's interested in this reading today i believe has to be taken in the proper context of what was happening back then two thousand years ago we can't just excise it from then and plop it into today october third twenty twenty one and try to fit it into our complex lives it doesn't happen easily or neatly first of all the interaction with the pharisees it wasn't an honest interaction was it were they having friendly conversation no were they in a classroom trying to learn from him and him from them no what was the line after they asked the question they were testing him so they weren't using that interaction to really get to the heart of the matter and get to a deeper understanding of marriage and the law and divorce and all of that they were using that using other people and particularly women but let's say everybody to prove a point they were dishonest they happened to be law yours and i'm not casting a wide blanket 2 000 years later on the entire profession you're with me they were scholars of the law they were lawyers they knew the rules they knew the rigs they knew the loopholes they posed that question to test him they weren't interested in the spirit of it all they were interested in in tripping him up and in the process they trip so many of us up in this guilt and the shame two thousand years later look at genesis it's not good for the man to be alone gonna find a suitable partner well we tried this we tried that nothing worked nothing was a suitable partner then a deep sleep and then out comes the rib you got man and now whoa man you know not too funny all right well anyway is that meant to be taken literally women folk you're just a piece of chip a rib up the old block come on i'm off the card can you tell right now here but think about it we're of the same substance we're human beings suitable partners for each other human to human i think the spirit of that first reading is just about that not a literal rib and now you're the lesser but suitable partner for the men and by the way how has that continued on over the millennia huh another the whole other issue to talk about huh but genesis not being a literal story a rib story what's the spirit of it i would say and again this is just on a surface level we need each other we need one another married or not it's about mutuality i said it we have a ton of weddings uh this month we have like 21 23 weddings september and october now some of that these beautiful couples were scheduled and the rest you know post covered and then baptisms as i said last week people were not bored during the covet crisis huh unbelievable i feel like you know i'm sprinkling water and putting rings it's humble it's fantastic huh but i said in the in in the wedding yesterday because this was the reading the healthiest marriages the healthiest relationships sibling relationships friendships marriages are the ones where there's mutuality and not one person's dominating that relationship mutuality in other words it's not just about us and i think the genesis reading says that you know we've heard so often and for so long me first us first the gospel is about others first take care of other people we're the needs of others the healthiest marriages i see now these friendships i know are when people look at the needs of others it's not just a self-centered way of being it's mutual that's the spirit of these laws moses permitted the law jesus said because you were such thick heads you were hot-hearted you had arteriosclerosis of the spirit the reality in life is that things go awry for whatever reason sometimes necessary reasons sometimes good reasons other times for bad reasons listen to that language moses permitted the bill of divorce to be written by the who by the man to what dismiss his wife women didn't have equal status it's the rib thing you're over there yeah kind of the same but you know i'll use who moses permitted men to write this bill of divorce like you can throw away something that you're tired of an old chasm an old cloak worn out clothing the lawyers stayed on that level they wanted to trip him up with the legal questions but he wouldn't bite he wanted them to go deeper he wasn't interested in legality he was interested in the hardness of their hearts that they were then inflicting on all these poor people that led to more guilt and more shame and more alienation jesus is always interested in softening our hearts in the complexities of life in the gray areas where things are not always nice and neat jesus is always interested in having us be there for each other to the best degree that we can jesus always remind us you don't just discard another person for the sake of discarding inconvenience and self-centeredness but then as we all know there are all these other crazy things that go on in our lives jesus wants us to focus i think on the original plan of genesis and not on the laws that create loopholes for hardened hearts the ones that the pharisees were interested in so i'm going to leave us with a couple of questions just to think about with this stuff as we're thinking about our own lives our own marriages that have ended in divorce whether it's the parts that we've played in them or the part that somebody else played or even somebody else played in our marriages if they're healthy and for all of us in our relationships with each other where the pharisees were interested in the loopholes and the rules and the letter of the law i ask ourselves what are you and i interested in are we judgmental on that level even subconsciously and unconsciously do you and i judge people in these ways do we know what it is to be them do we know what it is to walk in another person's shoes before we judge them i think jesus said in fact i know he said judge not what lest you be judged but we got to slow it down it just happened so quickly number two do you and i assess that there's a difference between just divorcing like throwing some somebody away for unhealthy reasons and then divorcing for safety or psychological emotional or physical well-being do we assess the the nuances that go on there again not standing up here encouraging or condoning but being a realist because i think this church is filled with realistic and smart and well-intended trying people do we do all we can do to preserve our marriages and for those who are not married our friendships with our siblings our friends even me do i do all i can do to preserve my vows my promises what i've been about are you and i hot-hearted and self-centered in our relationships that's a good one to think about for me are you and i caught up more in the letter of the law being judgmental especially in this area or the spirit of the law which means softened hearts and being more and more in relationship and then lastly are you and i like the little children at the end of this gospel today who accept the kingdom of god as little kids do they don't get caught up in all the rules and regulations right away they just plainly operate on that hot level and like them do you and i try our best in our own lives marriages and families our relationships do we have our hearts softened to the complexities and the work of relationships but also the joys and the benefits are you and i working with the failures rejoicing in the successes as we go forward each day loving one another with no guilt and no shame so shall we stand and profess what it is that we believe i was kind of looking for a nice light healing gospel you know uplifting all this kind of stuff but every once in a while we got to think about this stuff you know and what i do want is that guilt and that shame and that judgment to dissipate what do we believe in one god the father the almighty and the maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible and i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made but consubstantial with the father through him all things remain for us and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became human for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and he rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no enemy i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets and i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen you know as we make our prayers known maybe we keep in mind all those who have wrestled with and suffered through divorce or are in relationships and marriages that are very difficult that all people will know how loved they are by god loved and supported they are by us for us as church that we may be a sign of communion between god and humanity not judgment and as a means of reconciliation among all people we pray lord hear our prayer for the grace of fidelity that we may each be faithful to our promises and commitments to spouses children parents communities and friends we pray lord hear our prayer for all married or engaged couples that they may recognize christ in each other grow into true oneness of life and bring god's love to others we pray lord hear our prayer for all who are in lonely or troubled marriages that they may find support in the christian community and receive strength and courage to work to renew their relationships and for all who have experienced divorce that god will heal their pain renew their sense of self and help them find peace we pray for greater respect for human life that all human life from conception to natural death will be respected as god's gift and a blessing to humanity we pray lord hear our prayer for the work of the united nations that their conversations will promote peace and cooperation develop shared understandings of the challenges that exist and give them the courage to confront the evils that plague the human family we pray lord hear our prayer for the sick and suffering among us bernhard klaus john rood anastasia toomey barbara and rafael santoro bill again for your participation in the i give you can just take your phone onto the flow code on the worship aid or at home on your screen and we really encourage you to join the i give i can't stand asking for money and plain english but it's part of the role of the pastor here and it keeps things going and you have kept this parish going over this past year and a half i'd like to ask you today every october we we renew our i give campaign but the good news is i'm not asking for any more money this is not about that but what i'm asking is if you'd be interested in joining the group of 868 parishioners both uh online and in person who are contributing through the i give and not just putting the money in the basket you know made a made a commitment we're asking if you could possibly do that so we can get our number to a thousand people it helps us on so many different levels um it gives us consistent recurring uh predictable uh offertory which helps us to run the ship in the way that we do here it most importantly will help us to open up our programs as we open up downstairs and we're going to invite you downstairs for coffee afterwards which is going to be great but the space is getting more and more use so that's all because of you watching and all of us in the pews i think it's a big goal to get from 868 to a thousand but i think we can do it um i think we're reaching about 8 000 screens every sunday and they say there's an algorithm of two to three sets of eyes per device watching so that's pretty darn good that's the work of the spirit if you ask me because as you know i don't talk for six minutes you know what i mean but you guys can have coffee you know we can't right now we have to wait so anyway we'd love to have you join the i give and get to about a thousand participants again just check out the uh the i give flow code and thank you again for your generosity [Music] [Applause] [Music] i have called you and you are [Music] he will bring its setting a pure sacrifice might be offered to your name and so lord we humbly implore you by the same spirit graciously make holy these gifts of bread and wine that they may become for us the body and the blood of your son our lord jesus christ on the very night that he was betrayed he took bread and giving you thanks he broke it he said the blessing and then he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice once more giving you thanks he gave it to his disciples he said take this all of you drink from it this is the chalice of my blood it's the blood of the new the eternal covenant it will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins so do this
