hi gang welcome to Free trick Friday presented by Murphy's Magic when the gang approached me about doing a trick giving away for free trick Friday I said I'd love to do it but I don't have a huge repertoire I don't I'm not a big I don't create a lot of stuff I work with the same material so I'm going to give you some business advice and a way to sell yourself to sell your show and make a little more money how about that thank you all right as a performance artist if you're making any money out there you've got to sell yourself you have to sell your tricks you have to sell you most important you gotta sell the show if you've seen the movie The Wolf of Wall Street there's a scene in there where they're trying to teach sales techniques and the idea is sell me this pen and this has done a lot in Corporate America to test how a potential salesperson would sell something as mundane as a pen in the movie It's sign your name on this napkin I don't have a pen okay it's completely wrong here's how you sell a pen Mr CEO Mr salesperson what do you use a pen for in your everyday dealings what do you do with with a pen well I write notes to my secretary I jot down some you know some things some thoughts that I have to do and I uh I sign sales contracts sales contracts that's probably the most important thing in your job when's the last time you signed a new client to a sales contract uh this morning in fact exactly okay what pen did you use I don't know depend on my desk the most important thing that you do in your work day and you can't even tell me what kind of a pen you use to do it now this pen if you have this pen on your desk and you only used it to close contracts if the only thing you use this pen for was when you had a new client sign on the dotted line for your sales every time you look at this pen every time you saw it on your desk in its little stand you'd think to yourself there's a sale I've got to make and when you picked it up you would have a sense of accomplishment knowing that you'd made your vital sale this pen I'm going to tell you the truth your competitor Mr Jones I just shipped five boxes of these pens to him for his sales team all I've got is this one left tell you what I'm going to do I'm going to give it to you use it for a week if you don't like it if it doesn't do everything if it doesn't give you that inspiration I will come personally back to your office and I'll take it back from you with no charge whatsoever what do you say and you made fail you listen to what his needs were you found out what his desires were exactly what he needed the pen for and you played on that then you got in you gave me the opportunity immediate and you closed the sale find out what your client needs not just what he thinks he wants but what he really needs what is he telling you talk and listen you're not selling pens you're selling yourself personally for me I don't want the call for a guy who's just looking for a magician I want them wanting Hannibal and you want them wanting you you find out exactly what the show is for what tell about the person that is it a special show for someone's but can you find out personal details that you can use in the show to make it absolutely unique to them you sell from yourself you give them what they need more than what they think they want and they won't forget you and you'll be the guy they call First next time sell yourself listen to your clients needs life is Magic I'm Hannibal thank you very much
