trust in you in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen we will also close with the optional closing prayer a prayer for divine mercy on page 15 of our marian 3 o'clock our prayer book o greatly merciful god infinite goodness today all mankind calls out from the abyss of its misery to your mercy to your compassion o god and it is with its mighty voice of misery that it cries out gracious god do not reject the prayer of this earth's exiles o lord goodness beyond our understanding who are acquainted with our misery through and through and know that by our own power we cannot ascend to you we implore you anticipate us with your grace and keep on increasing your mercy in us that we may faithfully do your holy will with all through our life and at death's hour let the omnipotence of your mercy shield us from the darts of our salvation's enemies that we may with confidence as your children await your final coming that day known to you alone and we expect to obtain everything promised us by jesus in spite of all our wretchedness for jesus is our hope through his merciful heart as through an open gate we pass through to heaven amen before we begin the reflection of brother patrick on the immaculate heart and first saturdays and mother mary let us take but a moment to spend just a brief amount of time adoring our lord in the most blessed sacrament at this time let us listen to the words of brother patrick as we open our minds and our hearts for this grace on first saturday so good afternoon everyone and welcome especially to all those joining us via live stream here at the national shrine as father chris said my name is brother patrick i'm one of the marion seminarians and this year i'm actually stationed here at the shrine in stock bridge on my apostolic year this is actually my first time ever giving a reflection like this so i'm a little nervous but i'm very grateful for this opportunity to be able to share a little bit of my heart with you all and what i want to speak about is the topic of reparation obviously that's part of what we talk about on first fridays and first saturdays but i want to talk about what that word actually means and then what the heart of it is what the heart of reparation is so first the word itself reparation means the act of preparing something of restoring something of amending something and so in relation to the spiritual life in the lord what that means is i think two general things first whenever sin is committed there's an injustice done to the lord or to our lady their hearts are wounded by sin and so when we make reparation to them for example on today first saturday it's as if we go to our lady and we say mom i'm sorry for how you're hurting for your heart is broken by sin but here's my little heart to dry your tears and to console you on the first friday when our lord appeared to saint margaret mary he appeared with his heart pierced and bleeding and he said behold this heart which loves men so ardently but is so little loved in return and so what we do on first friday it's as if just like the prophet isaiah when the lord looked over the whole earth looking for someone to send isaiah said lord send me here i am and so we go to jesus and say lord here i am to love you so many may offend you may break your heart but i will love you and i will be faithful and so that's kind of the first part of reparation that we try to console the hearts of jesus and mary but then the second part is that souls who don't know the goodness of god and who offend him by sin they lose his grace and they don't ask for his mercy and so part of what we try to repair is we try to give them by our own prayers and sacrifices what they've lost because they don't in many cases know to ask for it and so for example that's why our lady of fatima should always tell the children sacrifice for sinners who go to hell because they have no one to offer for them no one to ask for them what they don't ask for themselves and so again as part of our reparation we offer our own love in our own prayers to ask for what they don't ask for themselves but so what's really the heart of reparation what's at its deepest center i think that to understand that we should look at jesus because in his offering of himself to the father he gives us the perfect example of reparation the perfect and complete gift to god that we all should strive to imitate and in terms of what was the heart of his offering i want to share what two saints say about it the first is saint thomas and the second is saint faustina and it's very interesting that they both say the same thing because in one sense it's very different say thomas is a great theologian very educated and wise and saint faustina is just a little humble nun but they had the same teacher the lord so they say the same thing so when saint thomas writes about christ's passion he says that what it was about the passion that actually redeemed us was not simply suffering it wasn't just that christ was mutilated and died upon the cross and suffered incredibly for our sins he says that what redeemed us was actually christ's love that he loved the father in our place as we should have and so he kind of filled the gap that our sin had left with his own love and that's what accomplished redemption which was then carried out in his suffering and then i want to read a passage from saint faustina where she essentially says the same thing but she shares a very beautiful vision the lord gave her of the last supper and this is what she writes holy hour on thursday during this hour of prayer jesus allowed me to enter the cynical and i was a witness to what happened there however i was most deeply moved before the consecration jesus raised his eyes to heaven and entered a mysterious conversation with his father it is only an eternity that we shall really understand that moment his eyes were like two flames his face was radiant white as snow his whole personage full of majesty his soul full of longing at the moment of consecration love rested satiated the sacrifice fully consummated now only the external ceremony of death will be carried out external destruction the essence of it is in the cynical never in my whole life had i understood this mystery so profoundly as during that hour of adoration oh how ardently i desire that the whole world would come to know this unfathomable mystery so that's just a beautiful passage but i want to point attention to one line that she says she says at the moment of consecration love rested and so what does she mean there i think that one way to think about it is going back to the beginning in the garden when the lord created adam and eve he breathed into them his own breath to give them life and created in his image they were to breathe back their love to him just like the father and the son breathed to each other in the trinity and that's the holy spirit the holy breath but what happened that they turned away in sin and they didn't stand and return that breath so what jesus essentially does here in the cynical is offering himself in the eucharist and drawing all of us to him he stands in our place and breathes to the father with the fullness of his gift of love and so that's why faustina writes love rested satiated and that was the act of redemption and then his death she says was the external ceremony of death will be carried out the external destruction it's as if that was the sacrifice laid on the altar and the flames of the passion consumed it and then so we take that and we think about what does that mean for our life what is this idea of love being the heart of reparation how does that play out and i want to read something else from faustina which i think is where she kind of shows us how to enter into that offering of jesus what that looks like and that's passage 923 in the diary which is one of my favorites faustina writes february 7th 1937 today the lord said to me i demand of you a perfect and whole burnt offering an offering of the will no other sacrifice can compare with this one i myself am directing your life and arranging things in such a way that you will be for me continual sacrifice and will always do my will and for the accomplishment of this offering you will unite yourself with me on the cross and there's more but i just want to stop there because when the lord says i demanded you a whole and a whole burnt offering the word there is a holocaust and what a holocaust is a sacrifice given to god that is fully consumed by fire in the old testament the jews would completely consume whatever laid on the altar till it was just ash's left so for us what does that mean when jesus says he wants of us a holocaust what's the consuming fire that consumes us it's not a physical fire but it's the fire of the holy spirit which is the gift that he gave us by his redemption he gave us his breath to breathe to the father and so what he asks faustina and i think he we could say that he invites each of us to is that by cooperating with the gifts of his holy spirit we can live as he did and we can breathe in each one of the things we do each day to him with love so that not only when we pray the rosary or the chaplet or fast are we making reparation but by every breath that we take in every beat of our heart we offer to god the gift of love which is the heart of reparation and we can walk as faustina did and then he continues though he says i myself will accomplish this directly in your soul and in the most hidden depths of your soul a perfect holocaust will be carried out not just for a while but know my daughter that this offering will last until your death but there is time so that i the lord will fulfill all your wishes i delight in you as in a living host that nothing terrify you i am with you and so this kind of offering to the lord of the entirety of ourselves in our breath and our love that's really what the heart of holiness is not just reparation but also of holiness and it's obviously not something we can do of ourselves it's not just that we have to will it hard enough and it'll happen he says i myself will accomplish this in you it's his gift but we have to be open to receive it and so that's where as he says in matthew 7 7 ask and you shall receive pray for the gifts of the holy spirit one of the things i love about being a marian is that we begin each day at the morning prayer and end each evening prayer with we have special mary and prayer as we say and at the start of each of those prayers we ask for the gift of the holy spirit because that's the only way that we can walk as the lord jesus did by his breath in us and so in closing i just want to offer a prayer praying for that gift of the holy spirit so i'd ask you all to join me in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen heavenly father we ask in the name of your beloved son jesus that you would pour out on each one of us the gift of your holy spirit the perfect consuming fire of love's breath and we ask that united by that spirit to the perfect offering of jesus to you our entire life and everything we do will become an offering of love that would console your heart and draw down mercy and grace for your children who don't know you and who don't ask for it themselves so that we can walk as saint faustina did a perfect holocaust of love in your sight and we ask all of this through the intercession of our lady and in the name of jesus amen in the name of the father and the son and the holy spirit uh lord jesus we give thank you for the words of brother patrick to open our minds and hearts to purpose of this day to be one of reparation one of bringing forth to you our sinfulness our brokenness and all of the areas that we need to say that we are sorry be it a lack of forgiveness forgiving ourselves and all those times that we have wounded the immaculate heart of mary continuing from our first friday devotion and making reparation to the sacred heart of jesus we now continue to make reparation to her immaculate heart what we will do to fulfill the request of our lady at fatima as we'll recite the fatima prayers then we will make a spiritual act of contrition saying we are sorry for our sins through the confitior then we will make an act of spiritual communion because two of the requirements are to receive holy communion on five first saturdays of five consecutive months then we will meditate on the mysteries of the rosary i will guide you through a meditation that fulfills our lady's request to meditate on one or more of the mysteries today we will meditate on the first three sorrowful mysteries after that meditation we will have a moment of silence and reflection and then finish with the rosary and benediction if you are able to stay with us you will completely fulfill the request of our lady for the first saturday's devotion let us begin now and you can follow on your screen with the prayers as brother mark places we will be doing the pardon prayer the angel's prayer the eucharistic prayer the sacrifice prayer and the decade prayer let us begin in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit amen my god i believe i adore i hope and i love thee i beg pardon for those who do not believe do not adore do not hope and do not love thee my god i believe i adore i hope and i love thee and i beg pardon for those who do not believe do not adore do not hope and do not love thee my god i believe i adore i hope and i love thee and i beg pardon for those who do not believe do not adore do not hope and do not love thee let us let that pardoned prayer sink into our soul as that is true reparation to our lord's sacred heart and let us extend it to the immaculate heart next pray with us the angel's prayer o most holy trinity father son and holy spirit i adore thee profoundly i offer thee the most precious body blood soul and divinity of jesus christ present in all the tabernacles of the world in reparation for the outrages the sacrileges and indifference by which he is offended by the infinite merits of the sacred heart of jesus and the immaculate heart of mary i beg the conversion of poor sinners now let us pray the eucharistic prayer most holy trinity i adore thee my god my god i love thee in the most blessed sacrament the sacrifice prayer jesus it is for love of you for the conversion of sinners and in reparation for the sins committed against the immaculate heart of mary and finally the decade prayer o my jesus forgive us our sins save us from the fires of hell and lead all souls to heaven especially those in most need of thy mercy let us now fulfill the requests that our lady gave us at fatima if you would like to download the summary of one page explanation of what you need to do to fulfill the first friday obligation and the first saturday please visit shopmercy.org saturday at the top of the page you can now see is for one page pdf that i've installed for you for free to read download or pass along to fulfill the requirements in a simple and concise way let us turn to that and explain to you the first saturdays that i have put on that website for you our lady's heart is sorrowful and wounded by blasphemies that are committed against her immaculate heart these blasphemies these five blasphemies are what we come today to make reparation for they include those blasphemies against her immaculate conception against her perpetual virginity against her divine maternity and those who instill hatred against her in children and hatred from those who revile her sacred images these five blasphemies o lord wounded your most sacred heart let us make reparation to this gift of the immaculate heart for these blasphemies and sin and ingratitude in order to make reparation for these wounds to her immaculate heart our lord jesus christ established the five first saturday's devotion so what is the purpose the purpose is to make reparation to mary for these blasphemies against her heart what do we do we go to confession this is the first requirement if you have been able to go to sacramental confession you have already begun the fulfillment of this devotion if you have not please be at peace catechism 1452 tells us that if you are unable to receive the sacrament of confession due to closed churches or quarantines or whatever it might be your own health reasons you can make an act of contrition asking god to simply free us and forgive us of our sins join me now as we pray an act of contrition to fill this first request of our lady oh my god i am heartily sorry for having offended thee and i detest all my sins because of your just punishments but most of all because they offend you my lord who are all good and deserving of all my love i firmly resolve with the help of your grace to sin no more to do my penance and to avoid the near occasion of sin amen the next requirement from our lady is to receive holy communion we do know that there are on people unable to receive most holy communion and therefore we are going to give you the opportunity to join us in saying on your screen the act of holy or spiritual act excuse me of the spiritual act of holy communion on your screen please join us as the act of spiritual communion and thanksgiving my dearest jesus i believe that you are present in the most holy sacrament i love you above all things and i desire to receive you into my soul since i cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally come at me spiritually into my heart i embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself holy to you never permit me to be separated from you amen that second requirement of our lady to receive holy communion is best fulfilled if possible sacramentally at your parish if you are able to receive our lord in the physical sacrament of holy communion please do so please go to mass you can even make your vigil mass or massive anticipation tonight if your churches are open and you are not at risk we invite you to attend your parish mass to receive the most blessed sacrament but again if you are unable that spiritual act of communion that we read is said by the church to suffice the next requirement of our lady is to recite the rosary which we will be doing shortly and then finally to meditate on one or more of the mysteries for 15 minutes or more to keep mary company with this comes a promise from our blessed mother she tells us tell them that i promise to assist at the hour of death with the graces necessary for salvation all those who in order to make reparation to me do the above conditions on the first saturday of five consecutive months brothers and sisters we have an incredible opportunity and obligation to fulfill these requests of our lady through confession or an act of contrition through communion or a spiritual act of communion we prepare ourselves sacramentally to be united with our lord then reciting the rosary and meditating 15 or more minutes upon one or more of the mysteries do not be fearful i will lead you in that meditation all you have to do is open your heart to listen and receive the words of the scriptures and the mysteries of the rosary before we do that let us finish before we begin our meditation with a prayer that in this year the year of saint joseph he will guide us through his spouse to his foster son jesus on your screen you may follow us as we pray the prayer to saint joseph as many of you are preparing for your consecration this prayer will help prepare us to consecrate to saint joseph as the head of the family pray for your family do you have estranged members is there any unforgiveness within your family is there any estrangement is there a lack of love and charity is there any ideas that you can bring forward through this prayer and the most blessed sacrament that will improve the holiness and sanctity of your family ask the lord to open your heart to receive the grace through his gift of saint joseph and let us pray the prayer that you may follow with us on your screen the prayer to saint joseph to you o blessed joseph do we come in our tribulation and having implored the help of your most holy spouse we confidently invoke your patronage also through that charity which bond you bound you to the immaculate virgin mother of god and through the paternal love with which you embrace the child jesus we humbly beg you graciously to regard the inheritance which jesus christ has purchased by his blood and with your power and strength to aid us in our necessities o most watchful guardian of the holy family defend the chosen children of jesus christ o most loving father ward off from us every contagion of error and corrupting influence oh our most mighty protector be kind to us and from heaven assist us in our struggle with the power of darkness as once you rescued the child jesus from deadly peril shall now protect god's holy church from the snares of the enemy and from all adversity shield to each one of us by your constant protection so that supported by your example and your aid we may be able to live piously to die in holiness and to obtain eternal happiness in heaven amen let us now take a moment to adore our lord in the most blessed sacrament at this time we will begin the meditation prior to the rosary so we can reflect on the mysteries and give the opportunity to open our hearts to receive and unite with our lord through the biblical description of the mysteries of the rosary we will begin our meditation on the sorrowful mysteries with our blessed mother the first mystery is the agony of our lord jesus in the garden when mary presented her child in the temple she heard a sad and mournful prophecy it was the word of the holy old man simeon a sword shall pierce your heart the prophecy is already fulfilled mary suffered bitter anguish when she carried her child to a foreign land to escape the persecution of herod again when sorrowing she sought him after she had lost him again when during his public life she saw him living on the bread of charity and having no place to lie his head she suffered keenly when the prophecies of the savior announcing his passion and cruel death recalled to her mind the oracle she had read in the temple but now the day of her greatest sorrow is come jesus rises from the supper table she well knows whether here he is going and although she is not near the scene of his agony she receives into her heart its mysterious rebounds while the chosen disciples sleep and forget their master mary watches and prays her maternal presentment represents to her in all its horror the agony in the garden like jesus she is seized with a mortal langur a strange sadness and fear with him she cries out my soul is sorrowful even unto death at the same time prostrating herself upon the earth like him she cries out to the father in heaven o my father let this chalice pass from me can you imagine here is our blessed mother saying the same words that our lord did in the agony in the garden and yet they are so united am i not mistaken do i not rather hear her say give this chalice to me with all its dollars but spare my beloved child she is his mother more tender and more loving than any other mother o father of my well beloved she would say why strike an innocent victim even better than i know this sweet lamb in heaven he is the splendor of your substance the image of your glory and i from the moment in which i first felt the signs of maternity until this sad hour have always seen him full of grace and of wisdom and and of goodness these words of our blessed mother are timeless she continues he was submissive to your sacred laws his food was to do your will he went about doing good take pity oh take pity on him now strike sinners whose likeness he has assumed strike me his unworthy mother but lift your chastising chastising hand from him do not subject me to bitter grief for having pronounced his death warrant when to the glorious promises made i said be it done unto me according to thy word oh father take this chalice from his lips is it that god will not allow himself to be moved by the touching appeal of a mother ah no it is that his inexorable and infinite justice that must be satisfied divinely enlightened by grace mary clearly sees what is exacted of him she knows that the salvation of mankind depends on the merciful substitution of the innocent for the guilty with jesus she submits to the will of her heavenly father with jesus she is in agony with jesus she would die if she had not been like him sustained by a power from on high oh sorrowful mother not content with having taken part of the doleful conflict which the child of your womb sustained in the garden of olives you also wish to engage in the conflicts of your children by adoption these combats are renewed every day yes every instant there are so many enemies within us and around us and we are assailed so often by the contradictions infirmities and miseries of this earthly life and sometimes the contest rages in such a way that we too feel a mortal sadness and our souls are so burdened with the weariness of battle and so cast down by fear that they are almost ready to fall from discouragement into despair this is where we need trust trust not despair this is where we know that god's grace is with us and mary is that perfect example jesus has well commanded us to watch and pray that we enter not into temptation for the spirit is indeed willing but the flesh is weak but are we stronger than the apostles to resist the unhappy sleep which must assure the triumph of temptation alas too often we are had we have had experience of our weakness we have need of feeling the presence and of hearing the voice of our mother health of the weak refuge of sinners comforter of the afflicted help of christians watch and pray for us that we may come forth victorious from the combats of this life victorious by the deep resolve never to offend god whatever else may happen victorious by patience and resignation to the will of god in all our misfortunes that first mystery gives us an inspiration in our blessed mother to know that she is with us she is suffering with us she is there through the trial and tribulations that we experience to give us the grace to persevere let us now enter into the second mystery the scourging of our lord of jesus at the pillar this is a wonderful meditation scourging at the pillar if we are suffering for sins of impurity or the flesh if you are struggling in this way ask god through this meditation to give you the grace to be holy and chaste the meditation begins it is a pious tradition that during the days of our lord's passion mary felt an invincible attraction to the places in which he suffered when she heard that he had fallen into the hands of his enemies she desired to verify with her own eyes the events of foreknowledge of which she had obtained from her reading of the sacred scriptures and through the con confidential revelations of her beloved son [Music] thus was she in the near vicinity of the praetorium supported by the arms of holy women during the scourging of jesus you know the scourging of jesus happened for our sins of the flesh just like the crowning of thorns happened for our pride let us not contribute to any more scourges that our lord must endure for our sins of the flesh but bringing to him our woundedness our brokenness and our weakness the meditation continues she saw the sinister yet unmistakable preparations for the execution of that cruel sentence she heard the strokes of the thongs and lashes which fell by the thousand on the sacred body of the savior she heard the executioners robust soldiers encouraging one another in their cruel work she heard their cynical and barbarious justs and the deep sweet groans of their victim it was flesh of her flesh that was thus torn it was blood of her blood that ran upon the ground true her virginal body was not reached by these cruel strokes but her mother's heart was torn to pieces so great was her sympathy in her son's suffering it was by tears her heartbreaking anguish was expressed tears as well as blood wear away the life death results from too great a loss of blood and from too much weeping as well that is what we would refer to as death from a broken heart mary is bathed in tears in the spiritual death of a broken heart and they run down to the ground to be mingled in her son's blood what an object of pity o christian soul you cannot turn your eyes from jesus all covered with blood without turning them to mary also bathed in tears let your soul penetrated with shame and sorrow carry you blushing and humble to the feet of christ in his scourging and to his mother in tears one of the things that pained our lord the most especially when receiving holy communion are souls that are lukewarm and do not engage at all into the sorrow of his passion jesus told saint faustina that the three o'clock hour the hour of his passion is the hour that we are to engage into these mysteries we now continue in these mysteries knowing that our lord just asks us to join him in his passion when we do so we put our sufferings upon the cross with him on the cross to be united as paul said i must complete what is lacking in the sufferings of christ what possibly could be lacking in the sufferings of christ our sufferings this is what mary showed us this is what mary led us by example what is she doing here she is uniting her sufferings her tears her sorrow her anguish with the blood of her son let us to do this let us continue the meditation that says it is the sin of the flesh they together expiate in this flagellation in the beginning of the world's history we know that its impurities were washed out by a deluge that was noah's ark in the flood another was required to wash away the impurities of pagan nations yes even of christian nations as well sanctified by the grace of god incorporated in christ we do not seem to know how to respect the flesh in which a purified soul should dwell as in a tabernacle do not forget your bodies are the temple of the holy spirit when we when we desecrate our bodies through promiscuity or self-abuse we are not just painting our lord but we are hurting our own temples of the holy spirit the gift of the sexual act the marital act is the renewal of the covenant to be within marriage and for it to be given to one another and the full commitment of one's very being let us ask reparation to the immaculate heart of mary and the sacred heart of jesus for all these sexual sins of the flesh and our culture that has turned a blind eye to the moral decadence that has been so pervasive in our society but let us ask through the virgin mary and her perpetual virginity and her chastity to lead us by example the meditation continues and too often in contempt of the sacrament by which we receive a new life we carry our contingent contingent of infection to the collected mass of shameful sins that dishonor the world thus it is that another deluge is required to wash away these crimes we see it in the mystery of our lord scourging in the old testament we know that noah and his family had to endure the deluge the cleansing in the waters that would precursor that of baptism now our lord here is paying that price for our sins of the flesh let us thank him let us unite to him let us be sorrowful with him it is the deluge of blood shed by our savior it is the deluge of tears that flow from the eyes of mary these saving floods greater than that of noah these have called forth so many others the saints understood them as well and not content with purifying themselves in the blood of jesus or in the tears of mary they made executioners of themselves in regard to their own flesh chastising it without pity imprisoning it in their instruments and opening wounds through which flowed generous blood and we do not have to take this only as literal we take this as a death to ourself a sacrifice of our will or our desires to engage in inordinate desire we give death to ourselves when we say yes to the lord's grace to remain chaste this is doing the will of god they have been prodigal in blood and tears and have exhausted their lives therein to prevent or to expiate the disorders of the flesh read their history and you will tremble at the recital that they have done and been through and endured worldlings of easy life and found of pleasure effect to be scandalized they cry out barbarism extravagance folly let us rather admire their heroism let us beg of jesus and marry the grace to chastise the sins of the flesh by its voluntary martyrdom but no many times we are afraid we are told that our flesh is something sacred the pleasures which the world offers may indeed be cast off but we fortify ourselves with wise precautions care is taken that nothing hurts our health weakness and inabilities of various kinds are brought forward to excuse us from the penances imposed or asked of us by the church the hard stones would injure our knees if we knelt on them in a word the evil forces of the body seem to be carefully preserved as if it was determined to drag down the soul to in unhappy faults again how well it would be if you knew how to weep if you knew how to save your tears from for the mysterious baptism of penance you weep over the affections which providence has broken just in time perhaps to prevent them from becoming disastrous you weep on account of your conflicting prices over broken fortune over fallen ambition over lying reports and imaginary evils what this meditation is telling us here is there are many things that cause us to shed tears let us truly reflect on what should cause us to shed tears is the suffering our lord endured on behalf of us in expiation for our sins there are tears of tenderness ill-regulated tears of vexation tears of wrath tears of discouragement and of despair tears of ridiculous sensibility but tears of shame and repentance for sin tears that strengthen and purify thy soul i seldom see in your eyes christians i conjure you shake off this cowardice correct this folly if in the presence of christ we are scourged you have not strength to punish on the flesh the sins of the flesh say at least with the prophet in presence of the sorrowing blessed mother who will give water to my head and a fountain of tears to my eyes that i may mourn night and day for those whom the flesh has destroyed in the house of my god we finish with the third mystery the crowning of thorns of our lord jesus christ these are for the sins of pride with the crown of thorns we ask our lord in humility to help us put forth humility set back pride let us now meditate on what our lord endured during this crowning this crowning with thorns through the eyes of the blessed mother mary oh sweetest mother is your heart not yet broken by the doleful emotions resulting from the scourging of your son retire from the awful scene of his delores suffice it to follow in spirit the horrible drama which can only end by his infamous death on the cross your heart will have suffered more than the heart of any other mother if it confines itself to meditate on solitude on the oracles now almost accomplished and which alas you know too well a mother of tender compassion come away but she will not she will see him again when the soldiers after having loaded him with insults clothed him as a mock king and crown him with thorns thus presenting him to the people at a distance mary witnesses the horrible scene expressed in the immortal words behold the man it is the word of pilate it is taken up with cruel derision by the crowd not a word of pity is heard on the contrary shouts full of contempt and anger fill the air oh his grief-stricken mother how she must suffer every thorn that pierces the head of her son pierces her heart every blasphemous word she hears grossly insults her love the thorns she accepts with resignation but she repels the blasphemies by acts of profound and sublime adoration oh my jesus she would say true king of wisdom true solomon indeed you have called me and i have i am come like the daughter of your zion of zion to behold the diadem with which your cruel stepmother the jewish synagogue has in circled her brow she endeavors to turn into mockery your eternal royalty but in spite of her jealous fury in spite of your deep humiliations you will always be king of angels and of men king of all true israelites king of the entire world king of my heart more than ever do i wish in the words of the angel who in the name of the eternal father promised you the throne of david your father and a kingdom that shall have no end ave rex hail o king these are the protestations of his holy mother let us unite in them with our whole heart if grinding care and bitter anguish and deep disgrace should be our lot let us accept them joyfully as the thorns of our lives sent us by the hand of god but above all things let us protest with all the force of our christian love against the blasphemies which insult our divine master jesus christ in this our day there seems to be no obstacle to the blasphemies of impious men no fear of god no human law no revolt of public opinion we see them shamelessly spread abroad in our daily papers which a morbid curiosity literally devours it is one of the greatest sins of the day yet our rulers and our lawmakers of whom repression is demanded tell us they see it in it no crime no crime o my savior to treat thee as thou were treated by thy executioners at the time of thy passion no crime publicly to insult the supreme majesty of god when the reputation of the most obscure or even of the meanest of men is protected by human law what a sad reversal of all order what in infamy let us never through indifference or insensibility be accomplices of the scandalous indulgence of which modern rulers and legislators are guilty when they refuse to avenge the outrage honor of god and in honor to atone as far as we can for the public blasphemies that daily offend the divine majesty let us with our holy mother protest against them by heartfelt and profound acts of adoration and reparation let us say to jesus our holy savior listen o lord to the str to the strong cry of our faith and of our love rising high above the contempt and injuries of a senseless multitude hail o king ave rex hail in our eyes humiliation takes nothing from thy glory to us thou wilt always be the word of god the splendor of his glory the mirror of his eternal perfections the gift of his infinite love our own heavenly king we will ever be thy humble and faithful subjects so much the more respectful and submissive as thou hast been more grievously offended let us not content ourselves even with this general protestation but every time we hear or read of a blasphemy offered to god let us answer by words of adoration and praise may the name of the lord be blessed from henceforth now and forever to the ain't king of ages immortal and invisible the only god be honoring glory forever and ever amen may jesus our king put into our hearts and on our lips as many words of praise and benediction as there are words of male diction on the lips of the mps we thank you mary immaculate for calling us to this time of meditation and to keep you company and console your heart for the many sins and gratitude and blasphemies uttered against you please help us to love jesus more every day and to fulfill god's plans for each of our lives thank you blessed mother we love you next month will be holy saturday we
