so so [Music] um so remember your mercies o lord and with your eternal protection sanctify your servants for whom christ your son by the shedding of his blood established the paschal mystery who lives and reigns forever and ever [Music] a reading from the book of the prophet isaiah see my servant shall prosper he shall be raised high and greatly exalted even as many were amazed at him so mard was his look beyond human semblance and his appearance beyond that of the sons of man so shall he startle many nations because of him kings shall stand speechless for those who have not been told shall see those who have not heard shall ponder it who would believe what we have heard to whom has the arm of the lord been revealed he grew up like a sapling before him like a shoot from the parched earth there was in him no stately bearing to make us look at him nor appearance that would attract us to him he was spurned and avoided by people a man of suffering accustomed to infirmity one of those from whom people hid their faces spurned and we held him in no esteem yet it was our infirmities that he bore our sufferings that he endured while we thought of him as stricken as one smitten by god and afflicted but he was pierced for our offenses crushed for our sins upon him was the chastisement that makes us whole by his stripes we were healed we had all gone astray like sheep each following his own way but the lord laid upon him the guilt of us all though he was harshly treated he submitted and opened not his mouth like a lamb led to the slaughter or a sheep before the shearers he was silent and open not his mouth oppressed and condemned he was taken away and who would have thought any more of his destiny when he was cut off from the land of the living and smitten for the sin of his people a grave was assigned him among the wicked in a burial place with evil doers though he had done no wrong nor spoken any falsehood but the lord was pleased to crush him in infirmity if he gives his life as an offering for sin he shall see his descendants in a long life and he and the will of the lord shall be accomplished through him because of his affliction he shall see the light in fullness of days through his suffering my servant shall justify many and their guilt he shall bear therefore i will give him his portion among the great and he shall divide the spoils with the mighty because he surrendered himself to death and was counted among the wicked and he shall take away the sins of many and win pardon for their offenses the word of the lord thanks be to god [Music] oh [Music] i command my spirit for [Music] in you o lord i take refuge let me never be put to shame in your justice rescue me into your hands i command my spirit you will redeem me o lord o faithful god [Music] for all my foes i am object of reproach a laughing stock to my neighbors and a dread to my friends they who see me abroad flee from me i am forgotten like the unremembered dead i am like a dish that is [Music] but my trust is in you o lord i say you are my god in your hands is my destiny rescue me from the clutches of my enemies and my persecutors [Music] let your face shine upon your servant save me in your kindness take courage and be stronghearted all you who hope in the lord my spirit a reading from the letter to the hebrews brothers and sisters since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens jesus the son of god let us hold fast to our confession for we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses but one who has similarly been tested in every way yet without sin so let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help in the days when christ was in the flesh he offered prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to the one who was able to save him from death and he was heard because of his reverence son though he was he learned obedience from what he suffered and when he was made perfect he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him the word of the lord [Music] praise to you lord jesus christ king of endless glory [Music] praise to you lord jesus [Music] christ glory christ became obedient to the point of death even death on a cross because of this god greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every other name praise to you by jesus christ [Music] the passion of our lord jesus christ according to john jesus went out with his disciples across the kidron valley to where there was a garden into which he and his disciples entered judas his betrayer also knew the place because jesus had often met there with his disciples so judas got a band of soldiers and guards from the chief priests and the pharisees and went there with lanterns tortures and weapons jesus knowing everything that was going to happen to him went out and said to them whom are you looking for they answered him he said to them i am judas his betrayer was also with them when he said to them i am they turned away and fell to the ground so we again asked them whom are you looking for they said [Music] jesus answered i told you that i am so if you are looking for me let these men go this was to fulfill what he has said i have not lost any of those you gave me then simon peter who had a sword drew it struck the high priest slave and cut off his right ear the slave's name was malcus jesus said to peter put your sword into his scabbard shall i not drink the cup that the father gave me so the band of soldiers the tribune and the jewish guard seized jesus bound him and brought him to anna's first he was the father-in-law of caiaphas who was high priest that year it was caiaphas who had counseled the jews that it was better that one man should die rather than the people simon peter and another disciple followed jesus now the other disciple was known to the high priest and he entered the courtyard of the high priest with jesus but peter stood at the gate outside so the other disciple the acquaintance of the high priest went out and spoke to the gatekeeper and brought peter in then the maid who was the gatekeeper said to peter [Music] he said i am not now the slaves and the guards were standing around a charcoal fire that they had made because it was cold and were warming themselves peter was also standing there keeping warm the high priest questioned jesus about his disciples and about his doctrine jesus answered him i have spoken publicly to the world i have always taught in a synagogue or in the temple area where all the jews gather and in secret i have said nothing why ask me ask those who heard me what i said to them they know what i said when he had said this one of the temple guards standing there struck jesus and said is this the way you answer the high priest jesus answered him if i have spoken wrongly testify to the wrong but if i have spoken rightly why do you strike me then anna sent him bound to caiaphas the high priest now simon peter was standing there keeping warm and they said to him you are not one of his disciples he denied it and said i am not one of the slaves of the high priest a relative of the one whose ear peter had cut off said [Music] again peter denied it and immediately the crowed then they brought jesus from caiaphas to the praetorium it was morning and they themselves did not enter the praetorium in order not to be defiled so that they could eat the passover so pilate came out to them and said what charge do you bring against this man they answered and said to him if you were not a said to them take him yourselves and judge him according to your law the jews answered him in order that the word of jesus might be fulfilled that he said indicating the kind of death he would die so pilate went back into the praetorium and summoned jesus and said to him are you the king of the jews jesus answered do you say this on your own or have others told you about me pilate answered i am not a jew am i your own nation and the chief priest handed you over to me what have you done jesus answered my kingdom does not belong to this world if my kingdom did belong to this world my attendance would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the jews but as is my kingdom is not here so pilate said to him then you are a king jesus answered you say i am a king for this i was born and for this i came into the world to testify to the truth everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice pilate said to him what is truth when he handed this he again went out to the jews and said to them i find no guilt in him but you have accustomed that i release one prisoner to you at passover do you want me to release to you the king of the jews they cried out again now this one [Music] now barabbas was a revolutionary then pilate took jesus and had him scourged and the soldiers wove a crown out of thorns and placed it on his head and clothed him in purple cloak and they came to him and said and they struck him repeatedly once more pilate went out and said to them look i am bringing him out to you so that you may know that i find no guilt in him so jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple cloak and pilate said to them behold the man when the chief priests and the guards saw him they cried out said to them take him yourselves and crucify him i find no guilt in him the jews answered and according to that law he ought to now when pilate heard this statement he became even more afraid and went back into the praetorium and said to jesus where are you from jesus did not answer him so pilate said to him do you not speak to me do you not know that i have power to release you and i have power to crucify you jesus answered him you would have no power over me if it had not been given to you from above for this reason the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin consequently pilate tried to release him but the jews cried out [Music] when pilate heard these words he brought jesus out and seated him on the judge's bench in the place called stone pavement in hebrew gabatha it was preparation day for passover and it was about noon and he said to the jews behold your king they cried out take him away take him away crucify him pilate said to them shall i crucify your king the chief priests answered [Music] that he handed him over to them to be crucified so they took jesus and carrying the cross himself he went out to what is called the place of the skull in hebrew golgotha there they crucified him and with him two others one on either side with jesus in the middle pilate also had an inscription written and put on the cross it read jesus the nazarene the king of the jews now many of the jews read this inscription because the place where jesus was crucified was near the city and it was written in hebrew land and greek so the chief priests of the jews said to pilate what i have written i have written when the soldiers had crucified jesus they took his clothes and divided them into four shares a share for each soldier they also took his tunic but the tunic was seamless woven in one piece from the top down so they said to one another let's not tarry but cast gods for it to see whose it will be in order that the passage of scripture might be fulfilled that says they divided my garments among them and for my vesture they cast lot this is what the soldiers did standing by the cross of jesus were his mother and his mother's sister mary the wife of clopas and mary of magdala when jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved he said to his mother woman behold your son then he said to the disciple behold your mother and from that hour the disciple took her into his home after this aware that everything was now finished in order that the scripture might be fulfilled jesus said i thirst there was a vessel filled with common wine so they put a sponge soaked in wine on a sprig of hyssop and put it up to his mouth when jesus had taken the wine he said it is finished and bowing his head he handed over his spirit now since it was preparation day an order that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath for the sabbath day of that week was a solemn one the jews asked pilate that their legs be broken and that they be taken down so the the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and then of the other one who was crucified with jesus but when they came to jesus and saw that he was already dead they did not break his legs but one soldier thrust his lance into his side and immediately blood and water flowed out an eyewitness has testified and his testimony is true he knows that he is speaking the truth so that you also may come to believe for this happened so that the scripture passage might be fulfilled not a bone of it will be broken and again another passage says they will look upon him whom they have pierced after this joseph of arimathia secretly a disciple of jesus for fear of the jews asked pilate if he could remove the body of jesus and pilate permitted it so he came and took his body nicodemus the one who had first come to him at night also came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes weighing about 100 pounds they took the body of jesus and bound it with burial club cloths along with the spices according to the jewish burial custom now in the place where he had been crucified there was a garden and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been buried so they laid jesus there because of the jewish preparation day for the duke the tomb was close by the gospel of the lord praise you lord jesus christ [Music] on behalf of all of our marian priests and brothers god bless all of you it's such a joy to have people back into our little shrine we have been having masses over in the faustina center but what a joy to have all of you with us and all of you who are joining us by live stream may god bless you on this very good friday you know when i was in seventh grade we didn't have class on good friday so sister dorothy was teaching us to do stations of the cross on thursday thinking that god would accept being the day early and as she was explaining what we just read that our lord went through in his passion i remember one of the girls michelle said sister what is good about this and i remember sitting there thinking that's a good question what is good about this because we were talking about good friday even though it was going to be the next day and i'll never forget sister dorothy answered hold that question so she kind of looked and went okay about an hour later we went into the church and we did stations of the cross and we had our little booklet and we got to the first station jesus is condemned to death and we knelt down and said we adore you o christ and we praise you because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world and sister dorothy said that is why it is good friday you know you have those little things that stick with you for your whole life god bless the nuns right because that made perfect sense to me why it is good friday because it is our redemption now somebody might say well what's good about it if it's good why is there no mass well we have a situation where we have a liturgy you're part of it right now we even have communion but there's no consecration so this is not actually a mass why st thomas aquinas tells us a beautiful answer because the mass is a re-presentation of what happens at calvary every day that we do mass 364 days of the year notice i said 364. it's a re-presentation but on this day we have the reality of christ crucified for our redemption not a re-presentation so we don't consecrate the blessed or the host on the day that the event actually happened it's powerful in this way we have the reality of jesus's passion right now without celebrating it as a representation even though that is real it takes us every mass you are at the foot of calvary you are there as christ is paying you've heard me all say before why did jesus die on the cross that's another thing i learned from sister dorothy god rest her soul paul tells us the wage of sin is death when you sin or i sin we deserve to die yet someone took our place jesus christ today continues from last night as brother jason pointed out it's a continuation of the liturgy that we celebrated or i should say the mass that we celebrated yesterday of the last supper our lord's supper and in it christ instituted the priesthood and the eucharist i have a friend who still talks about father bob's homily from years ago where he got fired up and he says without a priest we don't have the eucharist and father bob was getting all fired up it was beautiful and that's so true and christ gave it both at the last supper last night people don't realize that do you know washing of the feet yes it's it's in service that god was giving jesus was giving but it's also in the aaronic priesthood part of ordination jesus was washing the feet ordaining the first priests and those priests has handed down an apostolic succession ever since this is beautiful so we have a continuation of this last night when the church mother holy mother church entered into the upper room now at that point the lord washed feet and it ended with a procession so if any of you watched last night you saw the procession now the procession what was that it was a distinct movement like going from the upper room to the garden and so the place of reposition as we call it where the host is resting on our second floor chapel is a place of representation like the garden a place for us to watch with the lord so now good friday continues this easter triduum people don't realize that the easter triduum is actually its own liturgical season do you know that we don't go immediately from lent to easter we have something in between called the truth and this is what we celebrate now in the passion death and resurrection coming in easter of our lord this is why we have a day today of strict fasting and penance few people realize that the easter fast and the church only requires that we fast on friday today but traditionally the fast has gone all the way to saturday and we fast because the bridegroom has been taken away we fast because the tabernacle is empty people ask why is the tabernacle tabernacle empty because remember as i just said jesus said when the groom is not present they will fast we shouldn't get discouraged you know this morning of all days good friday i i went to father kaz and there was something heavy on my heart and father cass could see it was weighing heavily on my heart and thank you father kaz for being a jesus for us being christ-like for us and after i spilled my guts to father cass i said i got to go talk to jesus and i went up to the chapel and i opened the chat i'm like jesus you're not even here you're not even here yes he is more than ever right now and this is the beauty of what is happening in our faith the beautiful gift that we have our lord on the cross said my god my god why have you forsaken me this is psalm 22 and it describes the agony of the suffering servant now to these words my god my god why have you forsaken me mean that god the father abandoned the son no he allowed him in his humanity in jesus humanity to experience the sense of divine abandonment that we humans often feel in times of need and especially sin just as we often feel that god has abandoned us when we are suffering which is never the case god doesn't abandon us so the son of god in his humanity experienced that aspect of human suffering once i was in walmart and it was my first day in north carolina moving down there to start a business and i had a benedict cross around my neck and the corpus of christ was on that cross and a woman god bless her saw me and she says you must be catholic now there's a couple things that came from that conversation that were rememberable and i've told a couple of them but one of the things was she said my jesus is risen my jesus ain't on that cross no more praise god for my faith because my faith says jesus is risen and he ain't on that cross no more he says well our faith does as well say jesus is risen but ma'am in any way do you suffer in any way do you have heartache in any way do you have pains piercing your heart of course then in a way jesus is still on that cross but with us this is a powerful image i think because he died for our sins and the weight of those sins must have been heavy a feeling of abandonment and it must have been very difficult on our lord now jesus though quotes that psalm and if you know why read the rest of psalm 22. it has a triumphant ending it ends in glory we just hear the first line and we don't hear any more but that triumph that our lord fulfills is showing that he's going through good friday leading to the glory of easter sunday there is hope because the resurrection is coming we will be with him in glory just not yet right now we are going through this valley of tears you know i have a bunch of notes here but i'm not going to read them there's a lot of things i wanted to talk about about fasting and the beauty of what it is but i think i'm not going to read them because what struck me in listening to that passion was that they went to break our lord's bones why did they break the bones of the man of a man on a cross and the reason why it was because when you were crucified you were affixiated and they would push up on their leg to try to gras gain a breath so if you broke the legs of the man on the cross he couldn't lift up to get a breath and he would die sooner why did they want them to die sooner in this reading because the sabbath was coming the passover was coming and they didn't want them on the cross so they wanted to hasten the death and they went to jesus to break his legs but they didn't why because he was already dead and i know this is not church teaching but i would imagine that that's one of the reasons why our lord died a little bit earlier than some people had on the cross was because he had to be an unblemished lamb and if you were to break the bones this lamb would not be unblemished so our lord did not have his bones broken what did they do instead did you just read it they speared his side and that's where i want to finish because dr stackpole who works with our marian community did a beautiful study if you will and said that the roman executioners were very skilled they knew exactly where to slide a spear between what two ribs to slide through the rib cage to kill a criminal on the cross now one of you might ask why did the blood and water come out of his side when the divine mercy image oh sorry our divine mercy image is covered when the divine mercy image shows it coming from his heart the reason is because that spear that slid through the side actually punctured our lord's heart the blood and the water that came out of the side was actually from his heart i remember i did a couple classes towards my life sentient at john paul down in washington dc and i was in a class with all secular students i was the only religious in the class and the teacher was a secular instructor and it was a class that had to do with some biblical themes and i remember the teacher drawing a picture of the temple and the picture of the temple that he was drawing on the board showed that when they would execute the ant or excuse me sacrifice the animals the blood from the animals would go into a trough and the blood would be in the trough and then at the end of the day they would come with buckets of water and they would splash into the troughs to clean out the blood in the water and he's standing up there and he says on the board the blood in the water would come out a hole on the right side of the temple and the students are just looking writing and he says so the blood and the water would come out the right side of the temple i'm like does anybody see this this is what it is jesus the temple the blood in the water coming out of his side for our redemption satan's only two tools are sin and death the result of sin is death and what sin what wipes away sin the cleansing waters of baptism and confession the pale ray what wipes out death life and what was life to the jews blood blood was what gave life to the jews so death is wiped out by life and what is life to the jews blood this is the sacred heart of jesus that is clamoring to pour that divine mercy onto the whole world in the form of his blood and water brother jason yesterday read the passage 177 in the diary where jesus says i am clamoring to pour out upon the whole world my mercy why can't he god can do anything well wait a minute doesn't it say in scriptures that he couldn't even work a miracle in the town he went to of his own hometown why because of the lack of the faith of the people now tonight tonight we invite you to join us at seven o'clock we will begin the divine mercy novena tonight brother jason will give a reflection and as part of that be forced between seven o'clock and the eight o'clock tenebrae which tenebrae is talking about the seven last words of christ in that time period we are going to do our first fridays we are going to do what our lord asked us to do which is to make reparation to the sacred heart of jesus why can't that heart from which divine mercy pours out on the world according to 177 of the diary why can't that heart just pour out that mercy on the world that we are so desperately in need of because he's clamoring to do it because that heart is wounded and we need to make reparation what greater day than good friday what greater day today to say lord on this day you poured it out on the cross you gave us everything the least we can do is make reparation to that sacred heart that is so wounded by the sin and ingratitude of mankind today is a day of penitential father you're giving us kind of a gloomy sermon here today is a day of penance today is a day of reparation today is a day to say to our lord let me console you as saint faustina did in the garden what do you mean father she lived 1900 years after jesus passion yeah but if you read the novena which we're going to begin tonight jesus said that it was the souls of priests and religious that got me through the agony in the garden including faustina specifically god is outside of time and our prayers we can be there with him tonight we could be with him right now at the three o'clock hour with him on the cross making reparation for the sins and ingratitude of mankind so invite you as we finish this beautiful liturgy today not a mass we will receive holy communion and then we come back tonight to start the novena and then tenebree at eight but in between we are doing our first fridays and we're going to continue tomorrow with our first saturday at three as we make reparation to the immaculate heart for the blasphemies against her heart god bless all of you and this is our faith this is divine mercy
