part of the season andre coleman is back to receive number 83 for san diego he's been brilliant on punt returns and average on kick returns and the former kansas state star coleman takes it after one and behind a phalanx of blockers takes it up to the 27-yard line tackled there by danan hughes stan humphreys originally selected in 1988 by washington when bobby beathard was the gm there and bedford then brought him west guided the chargers to the super bowl last season natron means the big back they start with two tight ends capuno and young and two wide outs martin and jefferson and then the guys up front swain molten coming back after what figured to be career-ending injuries paul davis and the veteran brock from the 27-yard line the fake the means and then humphreys goes to the air and the pass is incomplete dan salimua came charging through to deck humphreys the pass intended for sean jefferson now defensively the 4-3 for kansas city the great neil smith phillips an ex-charger sally yamuah and darren mikel and then the linebackers jameson simeon and the key man derek thomas on the outside revamped secondary they've done a nice job carter and hasty at the corners washington and collins the safeties mark moving from corner to free safety means on second and ten for three over right guard up to the 30-yard line third down and seven for san diego in the opening minute of the game [Applause] well you talked about that secondary it is revamped alan is one of the real pluses for kansas city mark collins with cornerback to safety they took dale carter from the right side moved him over to the left side they brought in a couple of ex-jets brian washington a former mvp for the jets he's playing the strong safety and james hastie is over in the corner and they've already had a major impact for the chiefs this season third and seven that means ronnie harmon is in the game their third down back number 33 they send him out into the pattern humphrey swings it over the middle and the pass is caught for a first down by mark say up at the 37 yard line or at least very close to a first down let's see where they spot it they marked it back just a little bit it's going to be very close actually when you look at the spot it looks like it's short a lot of pressure on these charger wide receivers this evening they had seven drops in their loss last week at pittsburgh you will see this almost came it almost came out that time you will see them looking it into the hands tonight say almost lost control of that ball lost control and they've got it by a couple inches on the football a charger first down but bobby ross he kicked some major butt this weekend you know what he did how to do it real smart last night he set them down and he showed them the two kansas city games a year ago how they played as compared to what they did the last week or two and it seems to have quite an impact on the players a couple that i've talked to and he gave him a taste of that southern country first down at the 37-yard line [Music] takes it back inside and then is wrestled back by anthony davis number 50 and his friends abc's monday night football is being brought to you by cadillac and your cadillac dealer creating a higher standard at magnavox we make technology people want magnavox smart very smart and miller lite when you've got the great taste of an ice cold miller lite life is good second and eight opening drive of the game san diego at its own 39-yard line that's pakuno in motion humphreys was looking that way but the puna is covered so he sends it over the middle to natron memes and he is tackled at the 43-yard line it'll be third down and three that's means his first catch of the season [Applause] he's been getting it done on the ground with over 500 yards rushing but he has not really normally isn't a big factor in the san diego passing game although he has had success in the past against kansas city they utilize him against the chiefs in the passing game more than any other team in the league he certainly wasn't the prime receiver there either he caught 39 balls last season that's number one in game six tonight on third and three the catch is made by fupuno and he picks up a first down he's out of bounds up at the 48-yard line a former kansas city chief they tried to slide him through to uh an injured player two years ago and speaking of an injured player is that dan sally mua who is slow getting up now limping to the sidelines well dan's been having a marvelous year for kansas city admittedly an off year last year but he has been playing outstanding football for the chiefs this year already three sacks and that is a loss up front that they can ill a fourth looking at his lower right leg his spot is taken by keith traylor third year tackle out of central oklahoma and san diego takes a time out before a first and ten at the 48. three minutes two seconds into the game at arrowhead stadium he's gonna kick dan sally amuah bang right there in the right ankle that's what hurts sally mill now watch this neil smith is going to step right there on stan brock's hand with him now that's nonchalant covering for a teammate there luckily for the chief sally mua back in the game first down san diego at the 48-yard line it's a tough business down here in the fifth that's it that's a a deal you get away with on a regional telecast yeah not with all these cameras and that's martin who had it he had to turn and look over the other shoulder and dropped it almost that was a very very tough catch and for tony martin it's been a tough time he dropped another ball last week that would have made a major difference for the san diego charger he dropped a couple last years the reputation is following for a long time but this would if he would have caught this one it would have been a great catch it's hard for a receiver to spin that head you lose focus on it one he could have caught but you understand when he doesn't second down and 10 at the 48-yard line fake to means flag is thrown deep downfield in the secondary and it's caught out of bounds howard rowe is the referee tonight flag is way up field that could indicate it had something to do with the passing game either against the chief secondary or and it will work against the chiefs [Music] illegal contact number 34 defense five yard penalty first down dale carter over the left corner who is overly zealous at times sometimes and turned into a fine pro bowl cornerback working against tony martin let's take a look at it you're allowed this hit at five yards you're not allowed to take off his hat doesn't work you can use your hands to chuck the receiver but you can't do it to the face chargers now have a first down at the 47 opening drive of the game means cuts it back to the outside and is brought down at the 42-yard line james hasty made the stop alfred popuno through the block well they kind of kind of made the stop uh taking you on a natron means is a little difficult he goes about 245 pounds sally moe there frank back on the sideline but when you see you're a cornerback and you get means in the open field you get him down any way you can keith trailer back in the game for sally amore second and five wien to the short side of the field and first through for a first down to the 34 yard line george jameson making the stop so again on this drive the chargers picked up a first down by about two inches on what would have been a fourth and one and they're trying to capitalize on that this is the worst nightmare though for marty schottenheimer and there's dr cunningham the new defensive coordinator of the kansas city chiefs came over from the raiders but if natan means it does handle that ball 18 20 times tonight maybe even more kansas city is going to be in trouble 10th play of this drive humphreys to the 25-yard line so stan scrambling simeon and jamison finally stop him and he turns good coverage by the secondary into a nice gain on the ground oh he is one tough quarterback now most quarterbacks would have did a hook slide at about the 27 far short of the first down stan really was trying to get that first down he was not going to hook he thought about it but if you know him you know he is just one tough kind of a linebacker mentality quarterback and instead of hook sliding he took quite a shot who knows where that first down marker is he's going to try to get there he's going to be a little short but he paid for that second one three first string linemen are out of the game for kansas city but you'd never know it on that play that's keith traylor who is spelling sally moore who makes the tackle neil smith was on the sideline for that play and darren mickel was out as well has struggled and he has been replaced a couple of times by vaughn and booker and brian from rookie out of arizona state as they tried to motivate michael to step his game up over on the right side right now he's out of it third down and three 12th play of the drive comfrey's open man over the middle is tony martin and that's another first down so they've converted three successive third downs and they've taken it to the 17 brian washington makes the tackle and the drive that has not consumed the first six minutes of the contest boy this has been a beautifully called drive here by ralph reagan the offensive coordinator of the chargers he's utilized both sides of the field in the passing game he's done it over the middle and he's got natron means running the ball effectively this has been a beautifully called drive here for the san diego chargers early in this contest neal smith back in the game at defensive end memes to the outside and carter stops him after a gain of three jimmy's been with bobby ross for 15 years came with him from georgia tech but just became the offensive coordinator a year ago and of course he's calling the plays and means it while he goes 245 he probably is a the niftiest dan 245 ever he's like a ballet dancer he has very light feed he's very quick breaks to the outside instead of losing yardage he picks up a couple well most big men like that's a good illustration there when they're when they're stymied in the middle won't try to bounce it outside he now he tries to bounce outside he's effective doing it on second and seven humphreys under pressure and the pass is too far intended for jefferson the pressure that dale carter on the coverage was applied by keith traylor and jefferson had dale carter and perhaps if stan hadn't had all that pressure that forced him out of the pocket a little bit that would have been an easy six because he was there well carter's locked in on man coverage all the way he's got to trail him all the way across the field and he was trailing all right by about two steps third down and seven the drive has consumed almost half the first quarter 15th play and san diego has to take another timeout they've burned two on this drive [Music] [Applause] kansas city [Applause] providing the scenic san diego has taken its second time out on the game's opening drive that's the bad news the good news is they've moved down to the 15-yard line but a third and seven here as humphreys throws and it's caught at the two and that's a first and goal mark say holds it in marks a coming into tonight with only 12 receptions was tied with ronnie harmon as the leading receiver a year ago he is the third receiver but he made a good move across the middle and stan humphries hit him right in the numbers hard to protect that and this is just a classic illustration of a drive that has a defense completely off balance utilizing all of the field every players involved and right now the chiefs are unsure of what's coming at them and go to mark collins 16th play of the drive and natron means [Applause] bobby ross has to be pleased that his team is opening this game up a little better than last week they were pummeled early by pittsburgh down 21-nothing 24-0 31-6 i think at halftime it was just horrible much better start the 17th play coming up shannon mitchell provides the blocking but there's a flag down there's no play there is no play whistle before the snap [Applause] i think we've got a false start it looks like maybe prior to the snap we got a false start on number 70 offense five-yard penalty repeat second down von parker a backup offensive lineman playing a tight end position and he flinched right before there he is right there the closest man to us number 70. and we're going to see him rock forward a little bit here before the snap there it is that's all it takes big bond an ineligible man has to report every time he goes in to play that tight in position probably right now trying to hide from bobby ross on the sideline they love crossing patterns down here second and goal means on a draw doesn't fool neil smith he's right there to wrap him up at the 10. kansas city so quick on the corners neil smith on the left side derrick thomas on the right [Applause] that was really a slow developing draw play frank smith has time to go all the way around the corner and get in on this pretty slow developing play by the charger granted he's quick but you got to hit that baby faster than that third and goal 18th play of a drive that is now more than nine minutes old and the passing the area of nobody i was waiting to see how you were going to finish that the pass intended for oh boy jefferson and stan humphreys he may have been held up by james hastings jefferson had that look he was looking around for a flag but even then you got to continue your route and then you'll draw the flag well he was either going to do an out on him and uh and stan was not expecting it well it's a 10 18 or 19 play drive and you end up settling for three that's a very good break for kansas city they've moved the ball 63 yards on this drive they've taken almost two-thirds of the period now john carney with a 28-yard field goal attempt and he makes it pay off for three but still a major break for kansas city san diego's field position dictated a touchdown and they didn't get it chiefs will finally get the ball nine don't see those numbers very often 19 plays 63 yards nine minutes 11 seconds five third downs and two timeouts taken by san diego on one three points then considering where they were three points is a very disappointing conclusion to that drive for the charge john carney to kick off and this is a brilliant rookie to marrick van over who gets it up to the 29-yard line spent two years in college and then went to the canadian football league to play with the vegas team last year we'll talk about him quite a bit tonight 5 41. let's sing the opening period the kansas city chiefs running the offense for the first time in the game the chiefs have the ball at their own 29 yard line 541 left first quarter three nothing san diego [Applause] [Music] with a play fake under pressure then throws cash made by derrick walker the tight end and that's a gain of close to eight and the rest of the offense behind bono right now kimball anders the fullback who catches a lot of passes marcus allen the great one davis and dawson are the wide outs and walker just bought that last pass the starting tight end up front alt zot gronhardt shields and ziggler [Applause] second and three junior seau with that full hamstring but making the start tonight and melissa wins the play before it starts howard rowe the ref reuben davis losing his helmet prior to the snap we got a false start on number 80 offense five-yard penalty repeat second down blake dawson defensively now for san diego and they've been very tough this year on that side of the ball men's lead davis and o'neal the linebacking with bush gibson and seau they've had a problem in bush's spot harper and shaw the rookie with gail and orlando the two new safeties sean the former bear orlando the former oiler greg hill in the game at running back and greg hill he's immediate action and hill fights his way for a first down so the penalty pushes them back but then hill picks up the first down taking it out to the 41-yard line behind a marcus allen block and greg hill what a contrast he is to marcus allen he is so quick and so swift marcus allen really doing it with his head at this point in his career but this youngster has a brilliant career ahead of him uh boy you know our texas a m all-american first round draft pick a year ago and another thing we saw at the end of that play you could see junior seau yelling and screaming at his defensive teammates this guy's trying to inject some enthusiasm into this charger defense he's pumped playing through an injury and he's going to play tough allen swings to the outside and he's run down by dennis gibson but not until he angles to the right and picks up about three yards a word now from lynne swann lin alexa san diego kicked that field goal the defense came in and immediately ran to the bench to sit down to get something to drink they were exhausted now we know they're in good enough shape to play this whole game but not 10 minutes of every quarter if they've got to be on the football field this is where the offense not just has to get something on the scoreboard but give this defense a chance to rest so they can be stronger in this ball game and right now 3 45 to go in the opening quarter greg hill is back in the game and hill takes the swing pass at the 42-yard line nice move there to get by seau and takes it across the 50 and that'll be a first down tackled by shawn gibson that's greg hill's second reception the one thing he did not pick up at texas a m and you understand why when he rushed for over 3 400 yards is that they did not use him as much of a receiver it's been a little slow coming to him but once he gets his hands on the ball keep it simple and this west coast offense will do that getting the ball out in the flat then let him do what he does best run the he's football good player first and ten at the 49. three minutes to go in the quarter san diego up three to nothing buys time and sends it out to kimball anders and he's forced out of bounds after a gain of seven that's anders 27th catch of the season he leads the team in receptions and a very nice job by steve bono of taking a look downfield the first one then to a second receiver and then finally coming back down the passing tree to kimball anders well that's the familiar in this offense isn't it certainly is trying to go downfield he's looking to the outside looks to the middle he's afforded excellent pass protection which allows him the opportunity to find anders that's a key to it all but a well-oiled offensive machine performing on that play second down and three and this is marcus allen he may be 35 but he looks like he's about 24. and i think he's going to be close to getting that first down and there is shea junior sayo hurt his hamstring last week he did not play in the second half of the ball game we saw him miss the tackle early in this drive against greg hill who juked him and put junior to the ground and there is a real question as to whether or not playing on emotion alone is going to get junior say out through this ballgame he's hurting well he had a hamstring we had the san diego charge and then in pre-season and he came back and he's pulled it again he's still trying to go and marcus is that much short just short we saw a fake to make that tackle he got hit he got hit on the leg as he's flying through the air hopefully for charger fans that's that's just a painful injury that's not related to the hamstring [Applause] i think he just got hit i don't think that would be anything to affect the hamstring well you hope so you need this man if you're a san diego charger fan you need this man in your defense third and inches just inside the 40-yard line and it's marcus allen over the top first down kansas city at the 37. how many yards marcus allen has gained in his career 14-year career seau again struggling in the air i mean he has scored so many touchdowns 121 in all over 10 000 yards rushing almost 5 000 yards now receiving no nfl player has ever done that he was putting up some incredible numbers on the way to canton ohio seau again in the middle and again he is the key story tonight and boy he misses marcus allen makes him miss but right now there's a question mark as to whether junior's going to make it [Applause] to the sideline and a catches made but he was out of bounds he didn't have possession did dawson as he bobbles it and he goes out of bounds before he gains possession of it the two officials are right there to call it you have to control that ball before you come down in bounds he may have come down inbounds but he was bobbling the ball when he got out let's take a look at again they go right to work on terrence shaw the rookie cornerback who had troubles last week well he doesn't handle the ball good call and as you mentioned al perfect positioning by the officials they did have him bracketed on both sides here's marcus now taking it to the 36 yard line a yard or two on the carrie dennis gibson makes the tackle marcus before this night is done in all probability will be in eighth place on the all-time list supplanting otis anderson came in needing just 32 yards to go past him i'm wearing that excuse me now that windshield because he got jammed in the eye early in the season and look you can see he looks like he's taking been in a street fight or something but he is taking some heavy hammering around the face third and nine final minute of the first quarter bono and he finds the open man kendall anders and he's chased down by junior seau on guts alone inside the tag that is that is because kansas city had awesome pass protection for steve bono that was supposed to be an out pattern by anders he breaks it off and heads up field and because bono has so much time given to him by art shell's offensive line he's able to find his back who made the adjustment he made a heady move there's a turn up right there but that's an adjustment frank wouldn't you agree oh absolutely but a good move on bono too he just thought about running the football it took so long but not pressured at all is what made that play happen there's archelle former raider coach great job san diego leads three nothing into the first quarter back we come with monday night football first of all the chargers come with four guys they don't get there and then steve bono does a good job of finding the guy the junior seau is trying to cover it's a tough business seahawks injured and if he's going to be locked up with a back 20 yards downfield i'm not sure he can keep up here is kim landers taking the ball on first down and tackled by louis bush good play by bush who actually was pinched last week and came back out on the field and performed well and really earned his starting job for dave adolf the defensive coordinator right there again after he had lost it last week adolph giving us the dual tom matties he's he's got he's got so many defenses he's got him on both wrists still working on the terminology that changed when he came here second and goal fake to anders dump off to derek walker making a second catch and junior seau playing through all the pain makes the tackle third down and goal at the 12-yard line he said that were we saying that in the super bowl last year and junior he's gonna find a new game he's got to keep playing all the paint well he makes a fine open field tackle because he is out here and if he doesn't make that play on walker walker picks up a first down easily junior is the only charger defender in the area and he did what he had to do and that ben's neck of course all last year but a davis emotional third down goal oh no looks that way he throws davis makes the catch but he's rolled out of bounds at the four-yard line by karen shore it'll be fourth down and goal and then comes the field goals i'll tell you what a great throw bono looking deep trying to get it into the end zone but he had to check off and he really fired that football and a nice play by taryn shaw wouldn't you say because he knows he's got to make this hit in a hurry on willie davis look at him close and drives him forward and keeps him from picking up the first down that was a great throw the rookie knows they're coming at him and he made a nice play lynn elliott now for a little more than an extra point in terms of distance 22 yards and he boots it through so pretty much mirror image drives a 14-play drive for kansas city's italian a minute and 36 into the second quarter 3-3 in k.c [Applause] [Music] vanelli is [Music] and then gets a block and was not knocked down by anybody so he's able to get up and turn it into an even better return inside the 40-yard line to about the 38th it took a fraction for him to remember that he could get up i think andre coleman he ran two kickoffs back for touchdowns a year ago and he just came so close right there 54-yard run back [Music] do you like that al would edgar martinez be the mayor of seattle could he go for governor what do you want to be on the 37-yard line it's natron memes picking up three to the 34-yard line joe phillips makes the stop and randy johnson would be his his vice mayor i know one thing john cruck had the right idea when randy johnson's throwing the ball big time bailing out i admire anybody can stand in there and face that heat second down and seven at the 34 12 35 left in the half the game is tied [Applause] past natron means first down a nice floater mark collins right over neal smith neal smith dropped onto the flap for the coverage and stan humphries floated that ball beautifully over his outstretched hands dan humphries can throw the ball on a mile but he has got a wonderful touch to it neil smith dropping off and just lays it right over into the arms of means perfectly and many respects the most difficult of all passes for a quarterback to throw that soft little floater you're right couldn't have been better first and 10 at the 19-yard line play fake everybody going left and humphreys goes to the right and the pace complete the flag comes in for an appearance on dale carter i think you're gonna get carter for the left hand pass intended for tony martin [Applause] you can make contact with that left hand as long as it in the view of the official that it doesn't in any way move the receiver or interfere with his catching the ball let's check it out he grabbed him right around the waist fishing right on top of it and again credit stan humphries he was lucky to even get that ball in the area where it was even catchable he was being pursued by neal smith he was fortunate to get it off 16-yard penalty first and goal shannon mitchell provides the blocking for natron memes who takes it about halfway to the goal line second and goal from about the two and a half [Applause] [Music] him at right end second down goal means the tailback natron behind blocking oh is he tough to bring down and nature means he's in touchdown william white hits him at about the two or the three yard line but i'm not sure william white at 205 pounds isn't just going to be along for the ride when natron's coming out on one too yeah hey the surprise kansas city didn't slip into the short yardage or the goal line defense they went with their 4-3 and and a good block over the left side by moat and no one to stop means a pounder but william white harry swain the left tackle gets a good block courtney hall the center you mentioned moton good lead block and then the big man comes in he uh he is redefined the term a load natron with his fourth touchdown of the season john carney with the point after 11 24 left in the half the san diego chargers in a vital game lead by [Music] right here on abc san diego leading ten to three al michaels frank gifford david bierdorff binge swan in kansas city as the kick comes down to van over and the rookie advance to 20 to the 26-yard line to merrick van over and the chiefs now in the first down of the 26. monday night football is being brought to you by cold filtered miller genuine draft and he's had one making the world a very cool place the united states marine corps when you become a marine the change is forever and the all-new ford taurus a look you've never seen from a name you know well this is a red stadium almost 80 000 fans very few of them not in red lamar hunt and carl peterson have a pretty good deal going here in kansas city from the 27-yard line oh no play fake throws and it's incomplete lily davis looks for a flag there is none good tight coverage by blaine harper you talk about kansas city changing their secondary so too did san diego last year two new safety men they brought in both their hitters sean gayle and beau orlando this is dwayne harper who was on the other corner number 28 making this play timed it out just about well we looked at a slow motion you could have called that but that was very well played by dwayne harper i think in that instance frank every time the benefits should go to the defensive guy he's getting the job darn right second and ten at the 27 great hill is the running back in this set hill gets the football and junior makes the tackle juniors say allen we watched him struggle through the first quarter but all of a sudden he looks like he's 100 healthy again well they should have considered blocking somebody on the inside i think sean lee number 98 is about three yards up field he's the guy that really disrupts this play and feeds it to the outside and you're right a good reaction by junior to get back in it boy he comes up barking at his teammates you gotta love and admire a guy who loves the game and plays it the way he does third down 10 from the 27 yard line hello reuben davis easing into the backfield yeah that was reuben found himself sandwiched between a couple chief offensive linemen encroachment number 98 defense contact prior to the snap five yard penalty repeat third down exactly sean lee 93 98 yeah they run together fool both of us they've got a flip-flop there defensively too well they do flip to both sides that doesn't of course absolve the wrong you're playing trying to get out of it you know there's a penalty you and i won't speak for three plays third down and five from the 32 yard line bono throws and the cash is made by leroy thompson much traveled utility back used to be with the pittsburgh steelers in fact had a huge night in a monday night game a couple of years ago and played some barry foster last year went to new england he had 65 receptions for bill parcells up there so you can understand why they like to use him in this type of offense he comes out of the backfield you need a good back to come out of the backfield a little pressure on bono but again a good flip to the man who works so well out of that backfield leroy thompson first down at the 38-yard line 44 left in the half san diego leading 10 to three time and then the pass is too high trying to throw it out to the flat to kimball anders up at the 40-yard line incomplete the first bad toss by bono he had a man open anders classic part of the offense where you put three men into the pattern on the same side and the quarterback just makes three depicts the open man what a shot arrowhead stadium great foresight i mean this this stadium uh was built in the early 70s which meant it was designed in the late 60s and 1972 it opened looks like it could have been built two years ago [Music] [Applause] anders on second and ten up to the 41-yard line this guy played in the very first game ever played here at arrowhead a pre-season game between the cardinals and the chiefs and never forget the first time we came along i-70 on our buses to see this harris truman complex where right next door is royal stadium it is the most impressive sporting complex anywhere in america these two stadiums sitting side by side and they went to grass thankfully finally they went to grass fields to make it completely perfect in both stadiums third down six bono in a row bono comes back to a wide open receiver and the catch is made by webster slaughter at the 20-yard line eric castle makes the tackle oh no again pressuring as if he was going to run on the right side and the defenders left the receivers it's a pattern that takes a long time to develop because slaughter works the middle of the field makes a break to the inside like he's running a post right here but now he's going to go back to the outside and take my word for it that takes an awfully long time to happen the quarterback has to hold the ball for five seconds and again not much of a charge or pass rush 38-yard gain flip marcus allen to the 15-yard line gain of five maybe 35 years old but he still does not mind putting that head in there when you get down inside that red zone you take every yard you can get how is it that some people are just able to defy time why why do some people if i couldn't even fathom playing at 35 years old and yet you see somebody like marcus allen who not only is playing but he's extremely effective in their running back position nobody takes a pounding in this game like the running back i agree second and five and leroy thompson picks up about three as marcus loves to point out and naturally i know what's coming well his deal with the raiders as well chronicle we don't have to get into that but he felt because of the way he was used by the raiders he gets an extra couple of years at the end and these are those years he had a couple years there where his odometer wasn't spinning very fast they used him so much at usc and when he was used with the raiders uh it was a lot more than an ordinary back would you like to be a fly on the wall when marcus allen and art shell got together for a couple beers third down and two better than l davis on the wall the 10-yard line goes leroy thompson and that should be enough for a first down chris mims makes the tackle had to get to the 10 and a half and he gets to about the 10 and a quarter we think they got it first down this has been a game of drives if you have been with us earlier the second possession for kansas city third now what are you going to call this al first down at the 10.25 yard i'll tell you what it's enough to make it first and ten because they can get a first down without getting a touchdown that's if they get to the point two four yards [Applause] marcus allen he gets to the 9.9 yard line [Music] junior seau and reuben davis make the tackle with six minutes to go in the opening half i'm not sure he made it to the 9.9 i believe he's still at a ten point something right you know this is where the kansas city she's really missed their tight end keith cash with the good hands he was unable to play tonight he has a sore knee missed last week in juvenile in cleveland they really miss him down here because he can put the pressure on the secondary where you can't so you don't double cover the outside man allen in motion on second and ten everybody in the pattern and it is in complete and the line judge says no flag the umpire no flag allen the intended receiver sean gale of the coverage the ex bear boy if he would have just let that develop a little bit longer kimball anders was going to be wide open anders is moving towards the outside allen to the inside bono lets that thing go in a hurry but anders was going to be the i think the receiver who is going to be able to make a big play take a look at this from behind there look at kimball anders standing by himself off to the left of your screen and you just saw downfield number 82 as the tight end replacing keith cash covered by the linebacker junior sayo they're going to do that with kaiser that's derek walker third down and 10. and it's incomplete as he tried to jam it into anders inside four white shirts headed by eric castle who crowned him that's good he tried to remove his crowns that looked like a decision where steve bono made up his mind that that's where he was going to go right into the heart of the charger coverage this will be a 28-yard attempt for elliot who earlier made a 21-yard field goal louis aguiar to hold and that one is good [Music] 523 left in the half it is now 10 6. [Music] goal and then their next drive just four plays and then the kansas city drives have been of 14 and 13 play durations and resulting in a pair of field goals now lynn elliott to send this kick down to coleman who gets in behind five blockers with a nice job and bayless with the recovery from kansas city martin bayless recovery he may have been losing the football even before contact and ross is livid he thinks back to last week with all those turnovers and coleman when he tried to make a move to the outside looked like he just lost it take a look he tries to get to the outside no there's the hand coming in there bayless hands sticking in knocking the ball loose and recovering it as well that's a pretty big time play by martin bayless just recently signed here by the chiefs marty scheinheimer brought him back and boy there's some big dividends coming back for that he's a great special teams player in his 12th season first down at the 23-yard line inside the 10. the catch is made by boston he's sort of one and a half first and goal former notre damert can run after he gets the football in his hands he's the big receiver he's 6-1 207 pounds and he just carried defenders down to the two yard line too big a cushion by terence shaw the cornerback to that side and no help from the inside by bowl orlando until way too late you can't give a receiver that much cushion by both the safety and the corner that close to your own goal line first and goal tony richardson the fullback marcus allen is the tailback marcus to the one-yard line with 4 28 to go in the half lewis bush with the tackle andre coleman thinking well i did this it hurts new running back to kickoff we took a look at a slow motion the contact is almost unbelievable and you're going to give them up once in a while well he he was helped in giving it up by a real all-star play by martin bayless both knocking it out and recovering it himself second and goal fake demarcus pass touchdown fought by kimball i don't think anyone fakes the ball better than bono and mark is out everyone buys marcus allen down there because he's been doing it for years now going over the top of the goal line but he does a continuous thing he just doesn't do a little thing he just carries through with it and the defense bought it this man hides it well also watch allen after the fake well look how nicely was set up by greg hill i mean by anders rather getting in there and faking like he's blocking he actually makes contact on the wing they sold out by all the way anders leads the team and catches that's his first touchdown reception of the season chiefs have the lead for the first time tonight 353 left and a half [Music] fumbling the kick return kansas city cashing in first he's capable of taking it all the way this time that would have toned you know he wants to holmen from the 10. back out to the 26 yard line loose again but they retain possession so a three-point game right now if you look at that afc west next week we'll see the raiders in denver you've got the defending champions here you've got the kansas city of course four teams that could win the division title and four teams that could advance seattle's not that shabby either way what do you think of this huh we've been wearing blue blazers for so long let's let's step out and try a little something different i like that you know you look at the browns who kind of stumbled a little bit the dolphins now facing life without dan marino at least for this coming weekend and who knows uh for the next couple of weeks we've got a chance to see some new teams here in the afc kind of take that step to the front of the pack the raiders are certainly there and the chiefs or the chargers i think have a chance to join that group tonight and the irony is that three of the teams that a lot of people thought might be there cleveland pittsburgh and in particular new england are really having their problems right now of course everybody wrote buffalo off buffalo's back yeah they're four and one yeah derek thomas still down on the ground and there are a lot of rapidly beating hearts here in kansas city right now five sacks on the year so far for this perennial pro bowler and boy can't recall him ever being hurt [Applause] he sure looks like he's all right they're not even looking at it over on the bench san diego's play resumed second down in a yard from the 35-yard line and ronnie harmon with his first carry of the night that's a first down a little bit more than three minutes to go in the half talking about the best records right now in the conference oakland five and one and they played one more game than buffalo because the raiders haven't had their bye week yet chiefs come in here four and one miami the loss yesterday all of a sudden the colts are three and two with two big comeback wins against the jets and miami and san diego three and two at the outset tonight rodney harmon is taken out of bounds up at the 42-yard line time is important right now because san diego keep in mind took two time outs on that long first drive and they only have one left and the benefit of the two minute warning coming up shortly natron means joins the huddle and the man staying in there is number 33 ronnie harmon who can play in the slot he can play wide receiver just a very talented all-around football player and natron who came into the game without a catch has been a part of it tonight second and six ronnie harmon it's taken down nice tackle at the 44 yard line anthony davis third year man out of utah well played by davis taking derek thomas's spot davis came into the game when thomas went out so we'll come up to the two-minute warning it'll be third and four for san diego when we come back chiefs by three for 67. watch these guys go at it here's an excellent example of what it's like in the pits smith gets a shot there from dwayne young the tight end here comes brock back after a little more he's got here comes eric moton in this has been going on since the first drive dan brock's been in this game for 16 years i think he's a competitor it's the pitch in the pitch isn't it you've got hey you better play neal smith like that he's too good to play otherwise third and four and humphrey's going for and it is not cool he was not in possession or he was out of bounds the ball made by the official right at the spot well if he was he would have been arguing a little bit by george just off his fingertips take a look again plenty of time again for humphreys well this one again should have been caught and this is what driving is driving bobby ross crazy i mean they had such a terrible time last week they just dropped everything darren bennett the aussie whoa hunter who averaged 59.5 yards a punt last week sends that one on the fly into the end zone kick 58 now right but a 36-yard net 141 left in the half and let's check in with brent mussberger who's in seattle brett coming up on the tournament a minute 41 left in the half and steve bono going deep off the play fake and lays it out for webster slaughter at the san diego 43 first down so they will not leave terence shaw alone over in that right corner the rookie second-round draft pick who had a couple of problems last week with pass interference and he goes slaughter he's rapidly approaching 500 reception just right around the rookie he was staring into the backfield and transfixed by what was going on there and let slaughter get behind him and laid in there beautifully by bonnie he got no jam on him whatsoever frank when he was looking at the quarterback first of all he should have had better position as he lined up on him he's as a great athlete they expect big things of him but he really hurt them last week with a couple of past interference calls and he just heard them there you unless you're deion sanders with that type of speed you can't line up that close to a receiver and not do anything to break his stride if you're not going to make any contact with him whatsoever you're asking for big trouble and there's willie clark who's just a few deals he's coming in throw that over there well that's that's a good point willie clark next in line if if terence shaw but you know they've made the decision he's a rookie only five in completion so far for steve bono they won't leave him alone either kansas city taking his first time out they have two left at the 44 yard line first down and hill picks up two to the 42 clock ticking down to a minute 17. second down eight donald trying to speed it up [Applause] [Music] over the middle the catch is made by derek walker he's tackled at the 34-yard line that's very close to a first down maybe close enough to measure well dennis gibson makes a hit on walker but walker takes him for another three or four yards up for that you know up to the spot that's close enough to measure it's funny kansas city took its time out here though it might well it's a first down they're going to give a first down i don't even have to measure one of those plays where if you're close enough you may want to wait to see if the officials are going to bring the sticks in and save the timeout so timeout here for kansas city last week in tempe against the arizona cardinals you recall the play it was the first play of this year in the national football league for longest touchdown run yeah longest touchdown run by and it's the longest touchdown run of the year by anybody in the nfl this year i think barry sanders is next in line with a 75-yarder that he just had yesterday first down one near bono dawson reads the catch and he's out of bounds at the 19-yard line willie clark with the coverage got his feet down and got out of bounds to stop the clock and save a timeout very acrobatic move by lake dawson first of all to convince it willie clark that he was going to take it deep bono with a good strong throw and there willie clark slipped trying to come back for the coverage but he wouldn't have been in the coverage now watch the feet this is really good stuff good coverage terrific first down 19-yard line deep drop bono sack loses the football and the san diego chargers have it rayleigh johnson came charging through had a big game in the super bowl created the fumble will get the sack and shawn lee recovered well this is what the chargers needed so many things have gone against him over the past couple of weeks to get the turnover when it looked like kansas city was for sure going to put up three and maybe more rayleigh comes around the left side of the charger defense he comes from bono's right let's see if we can see him there he is number 99. leslie o'neil in there as well and right now that that ball's up for grab take it anyway you can get it ray lee johnson here coming in from the right and boy he just beats ricky siglar and knocks it loose jeff criswell out of that lineup he's injured charges in one time out left over the middle another drop mark say what can you say you can say start catching the ball because that's what you get paid to do well they've had a lot of drops not that that play would have turned into a touchdown or would have even turned into much of anything that might have added to you know the chargers field position by 20 or 30 yards but it's a confidence thing when you can't handle balls like that it's what you take with you into the locker room at halftime he did not come close to catching up 39 ticks left you saw humphries hunting those shoulders and then the three chiefs crashed the party now that that was ugly that was really ugly and that's irate his eyes get big as lanterns oh and here's carl mock the offensive line coach of san diego one of the great centers in this league and wouldn't i wouldn't want to cross him played right here at kansas city didn't he for a long time dan started we've got an unabated move toward a quarterback by the defense five yard penalty repeat second half you know they always yell at the side judge because he's the closest guy he didn't have anything to do with making this call i think a lot of abuse those poor side judges who work on the side of the field the line judge on the other side they they get verbally abused by the coaches for things they didn't do there's the headlines well ross ross ross is livid because and mark is too they want a personal foul on sally amuah and that's why they're screaming about it on the sideline because they were the beneficiary of the penalty second down and five from the 35-yard line and humphreys guns one and it's caught on the near side by martin and he is out of bounds up at the 47-yard line his own 47. one time out remaining in san diego's bank they're down by three john carney their place kicker very fine excellent place kicker his long career best is 54 yards 12 yards he'll have to move it another 10 to 12 15 yards for he'll have a legitimate shot boy could they use those wasted timeouts after these rolls throws busted up carter is right there with sean jefferson and dan salimua was the guy chasing stan humphries from inside and again the bad blood boils to the surface here between the charger offensive line and and the chiefs defense particularly neil smith but papuno cracked back on uh neil smith and he really took umbrage to it and it is certainly a way to hurt somebody and smith and fupuno got into it now watch fabulou come into your shot couldn't see exactly if pipuno hit him below the waist you got to do the crack back above the waist oh and there's neil's lucky he didn't get called for that second and 10. and that's incomplete intended for tony martin used to be you could come on that crack back block and hit a guy below the waist now you must stay away from his legs you must hit him above the waist obviously neil smith fought otherwise and it's a good rule change oh darn right you saw guys crippled who never saw it coming and a wide receiver someone would come from the outside and take a shot right at the knee that went the way of the chop block in both of those good moves by the nfl's competition committee san diego could probably get some pretty considerable yardage down the middle they're worried about their time however but kansas city is not going to or they're going to try not to give them anything to the outside third down and ten that means uh reset the play clock when the referee does that so it's back up to 25 seconds third and ten 22 ticks left first half beats up by three freeze guns it and that one is caught by mark stacy they're dropping a lot of easy ones here we go hard [Applause] dirty in the line of scrimmage that's all right that's the way it's supposed to be on the line of shroud san diego now at the 42-yard line 18 seconds remaining and they've conserved that one time out and that's caught by martin and martin tries to get out of bounds and a flag is known as a face mask he's thrown out of bounds at the 33. james has got him and that's definitely move into field goal this will be critical as to whether this is five yards or 15 yards if this is 15 this will really move them well into kearney's range well they're playing so far off martin when he broke to the inside they didn't think he would go to the inside they played it for the outside and they gave you nothing but room personal foul on number 40 defense fifteen yards baby first down [Music] field goal it moves them definitely in a field goal range and also with that one timeout left i'll get a free shot at the end zone oh he's got it and he makes the tackle fire that's absolutely that's the 15-yard variety if you get your hand on there get it off if you drag a man to the ground where you could break his neck with it and you don't even have to do it he was trying to get out of bounds he was sprinting to the sidelines and this is totally unnecessary now they're at the 18 if they don't get another yard it's a 35-yard attempt but they'll have time for at least one play from scrimmage because they have that timeout at their disposal safety blitz jailbreak humphreys off the back foot throws nobody home tony martin closest to it and the pressure put on by william white on that safety blitz seven ticks left and the chargers have to opt for a three-point attempt what a goal this has been a good first half of football hasn't it been really the imperative need for this game on the part of both teams and they both do need this game and they know that maybe san diego much more they're three and two and places four and one but there is a battle going on 36-yard attempt for kearney gail gilbert holds and they make the turnover pay off bullseye mm-hmm so they sack bono he fumbles they move down the field and get even on the board with two seconds left in the half yard again the importance of this game for san diego in particular a loss they'd be three and three they'd be two games behind two teams the raiders and the chiefs two teams they've lost two already this year as well and the chargers go home and in a short week are faced with the prospect of meeting the dallas cowboys sunday i think a good illustration tonight that from top to bottom i don't think anybody will give you much of an argument that the afc west is the most competitive division in professional football november 27th we have the chargers and the raiders in san diego on monday night football hey there's a good look from the goodyear blimp eagle which i flew on wednesday oh no did you that's right [Music] captain john who's flying it up there tonight took us for a ride and he actually uh let me hop into the left seat and yes we were headed for the moon beautiful it's a it's a wonderful scene from that left any turbulence no not bad at all and speaking of wonderful scenes it really doesn't get much better than arrowhead here in kansas city and if you could bottle a knife gentlemen wouldn't you agree that tonight is it pretty good perfect temperature and a false start [Applause] that was i believe a premature run at the ball by john carney don sasse's hair dude number 96 huh we got some flowing lock stuff he may battle randy johnson for the length of that end [Applause] [Music] kevin green bouncing ball this is valerio he knows how to score but not on kick returns he's caught four touchdown passes in his career but he ends the half with a kneel down here we're tied at 13 at the half and back we come after this message an award for stations [Music] back to receive the kick he takes it at the six yard line [Music] and back up to the 25-yard line abc's monday night football is being brought to you by the new dodge we're thinking ahead fedex for documents packages and freight worldwide [Music] 52-year-old marty schottenheimer personal foul unnecessary roughness a late hit on number 77 receiving team half the distance to the goal first down one of the one of the game's really good guys has seen a very even first half here of course that's reflected on the scoreboard at 13-13 check out the numbers for both of these ball clubs the offensive edge goes to kansas city really the big play of the first half would have to be the fumble by andre coleman of the kickoff return that led directly to a kansas city touchdown and on first down this is marcus allen picking up a couple up to the 15-yard line gain of two and let's get a word from lynn swandlin now i talked to bobby ross and he was complaining about all the calls that you guys talked about in the first half but he's really complaining about offsides by the kansas city team every time he also said the reason why there are problems on defense the young coroners keep looking back into the backfield at the quarterback instead of watching the receivers he got on him said keep your eye on the receivers look for them for a reaction for the ball but do not look into the backfield then you can make the play now that's aaron shaw got burned a couple of times in the first half and burned last week and bono off the play fake going deep and it's incomplete loaded it nearly into the arms of willie davis dwayne harper with the coverage step for step with him really frank a perfectly thrown ball by bono in the sense that if you are to air air on the side of throwing it just a wee bit too far don't under throw it where it could be an interception what i'm saying that's pretty good coverage too it sure is harper right there when the coverage is that good a good quarterback puts it in a position where the receiver if he makes a phenomenal play can get the ball the worst thing that can happen to you is an incomplete pass versus an interception third down and eight [Applause] takes him down at the 17-yard line junior wasn't buying any of that that's a good look at a linebacker holding his ground let the guy in front of you juke and juke and and think about going someplace don't you commit junior having a fine football game tonight that was a concern during the week whether he'd play at all and he doesn't seem to be hampered at all with the hamstring that forced him out of last week's game and that's what dan just mentioned he was on his feet had great balance he was ready for any move on the part of andrews louis aguiar leads the league in punting that won't help him no not much and a fair catch is called for at the 43 yard line well andre coleman is simply gun shy it's as simple as that he fumbled the kick off before nobody within 15 yards of him and he calls for a fair catch at least he caught it went to commercial with al talking about andre coleman and using the term gun shy i don't think there's any other way to describe it anthony davis the closest chief within really 14 yards or so coleman fair catches it on first down out from the 43 that's a four yard pickup as it's pulled in by alfred's pupunu of course anthony davis number 50 the the chief we showed in the picture there will go back to the kansas city sideline and tell everybody that he really scared cole he was he knew how hard i was going to hit him that's why that's why he's telling mike stock the uh the special teams coach hey i'm telling you something i'm fearsome i knew he could have done it he took one 88 for a touchdown against philadelphia earlier this year he was a great return night second down and six and ronnie harmon is able to escape a tackle in the backfield and then he's brought down by tracy simeon up at the 48-yard line setting up a third down and five good pursuit on the part of simeon harmon trying to break it back against the grain and gary thomas whom we worried about earlier is back out on the right corner that's the good news they are missing though darren mickel suffered a left shoulder ruse and has not been back in the game since early in the first half third down and five four-man rush and the catches made fingertip catch by mark say to the to drive you nuts i mean they've been dropping things right on the numbers and in the hands for the past couple of weeks and and now you throw something that shouldn't be caught and mark say makes a spectacular diving catch for the first down look at this it's a tough catch that ball had a lot on it and he had to just well you don't get to think that way you just react like the great receiver that you are to be even in this game early third quarter the game is tied deep drop play fake puts it down now throws open man is martin at the 26th and tony off to the races loses the football at the 11 yard line and kansas city has it mark collins banded loose somebody better grab on to bobby ross and tracy simeon with a recovery well the san diego chargers came into this game a minus six in their turnover ratio and they are not helping themselves at all tonight [Applause] turning this football over a great effort by martin who breaks a tackle mark collins comes in and the helmet looks like it goes right on the football [Applause] all over it and when the hat hits the football a lot of times it'll come out and you see collins coming off the field he appears to have injured himself but it's it's tough to get all over tony martin when you put a hat on the football a lot of times it comes loose from the best of them here's marcus allen and he's taken down at the seven-yard line that is louis bush that was a concussion tackle bobby when you oh well we can put that headset back in the locker i don't think it'll be it's just southern but static he cares so much and you know he's watched over the past couple of weeks they've been totally destructive you know there are a whole bunch of coaches up in the press box who were on the other end of that microphone when it hit the ground there there may be some blown out ear drums upstairs charger coaching staff you won't even see that on the shelf with crazy eddies tomorrow [Applause] second down and 13. throws it into traffic and threads the needle up at the 20-yard line willie davis tackled by the team picture up there as he guns it right in and dave is hurt [Applause] what a great fake by bono hit the ball well he and davis were in a one-on-one deal where davis if they bought the fake all the way he was going to take a deep if not he pulls up that's what he did and bono with a good look from our end zone camera he fires it in for the strike short of the first down but not by much craig janoff our illustrious director bringing you that look kenny wasn't it our producer they have many toys at their disposal for a monday night game including us third and one including crazy eddie it's tony richardson with his first carry of the night and the full back picks up a first down you got to believe in the tony richardson uh that's his fourth carry of the season and you give it to him on a critical third down situation as they look now at willie davis who made that catch just short of the first down and mark collins appears like he is going to be able to go back in the game willie davis may not getting that what zip code are you in [Music] questionnaire asking to be filled out by the kansas city doctor swing pass on first down hill picks up 11 4 34. some good blocking out in front derrick walker and marcus allen out in front of that one kind of an interesting screen he did the screen without using the linemen and and maybe a finger in the eye it looks like he's flicking that left eye [Applause] yeah he's got a finger in there with some kind of a piece of dirt or something 8 40 left third quarter game tied at 13. bono they keep running the same play left and right derrick walker makes the catch up for the 39-yard line basically you read thing you put three receivers flooded into his own and you take the open man that time it was walker you know this was a fun game for derrick walker a former san diego charger got his knee blown out back in 93 and now has found new life here with the kansas city chiefs and he's become a good size part of their passing game lines and there is cash [Music] yes little gq action on there very different thompson [Applause] might have been walker uh blocking on the big chris mims flag almost hit him in the helmet of course when you're a player on kansas city's roster with carl peterson as your gm you better be resplendent when you walk around holding number 82 on the offense 10 yard penalty repeat second down derrick walker eric walker working on a king size chris mims a 6'5 and a 290 pounds and one way to do it is tackling nothing blatant about that second and 16. other than you grabbed him around the ankles on the end of the line of scrimmage i mean it is almost hard to even fathom that you're going to get away with it well you not only have the side judge but you've got the field judge all the way in the back who's responsible for watching the tight end you you're being scrutinized from two different directions that's marcus allen in the slot to the left second and 16. and kimball anders takes it up to the 37. the fullback is normally used as a pass receiver doesn't carry that off and takes it up to the 37-yard line but he should carry more often because when he does carry he's extremely effective coming into tonight's ballgame he only carried the ball 18 times but averaging 6.8 yards per carriage now that's that's getting it done but when you run it make the most of your opportunities and kimmel anders is certainly doing that here a free agent cutting by pittsburgh a couple of three years ago and picked up by kansas city has turned into a big part of their offense third down seven very frustrated that he didn't turn around a little sooner well i'll tell you the bad news is he dropped it if you're a charger fan the good news perhaps that he did and would not have gotten involved in a sprint down the sidelines to the end zone with that hamstring [Music] it was right there it was a sidearm flip by bono that hit junior right in the hands he wasn't ready for it now louis aguiar to kick andre coleman sets up at his own 20-yard line a couple of good punters in this game very good aggie are leading the league [Applause] that's why great punt coleman backs up lets it go at the five yard line and andre's having that kind of a night takes a kansas city bounce they downed it at the seven so they don't all honestly i think maybe not a bad move he got lucky 55-yard punt game time 6 44 left in the third [Music] lin swan proud solidly behind their teams on defense and on first down natron means goes nowhere from his own seven yard line dan sally moves but then another game back in now this crowd and it really hurts the running game because an offensive lineman needs that edge of the snap when they don't hear the snap count it really does dramatically affect the way they fire off the ball a lot of the chargers wearing ear plugs this week lamar hunt right there in the middle of your screen his wife normal off to the left but this is this is the noisiest outdoor stadium in the nfl and it's a huge advantage for the chiefs second at 11. and paputo makes the catch slips the tackle picks up the first down he's out of bounds he's out at about the 27-yard line [Applause] but it was exciting he broke a dale carter tackle and that was a big play well carter went for more of a block and less of a tackle he was going to just try to cut papuni's legs out from under him weighs 265 pounds and you've got to wrestle him not try to cut him this is called a whiff [Applause] i'll tell you dale is going to be back in uh we know who's doghouse i'm speaking to marty schotneimer who has a love hate affair with his cornerback he's a great talent but he can help you dramatically he can hurt you and it's been an up and down career for dale carter alex thanos the chairman of the board the owner of the chargers watching natron memes bang his way up to the 33-yard line a pickup of five and there's the guy right now that the chargers need to get back into their offensive game plan they have been semi-effective throwing the ball inconsistent with some drops some great catches but here's the guy that can control a football game here's the hammer that you can bring to a defense especially look at the average tonight being held to only two and a half yards he's averaged 4.6 coming into tonight's game that's incredible too good job by the chiefs but you can't quit on it on second down that's complete into the hands of sean jefferson up at the 45 yard line on the san diego first down he got inside james hasty kind of fine catch by jefferson again of humphreys with time to read the defense checked off of number 81 tony martin on a crossing pattern and with an upfield of jefferson everybody in kansas city talks about the effect that gunther cunningham has had on this charger defense they are certainly playing more aggressive than we've seen in the past means and another three-yard pickup so his average still under three and we were talking about his seasonal average and every game this season means has averaged at least four yards per carry in each individual game and leads the afc in russia last year he averaged under four yards of carry so he's off to a much better start we gave what 350 yards a year ago just kind of quietly thinking of barry sanders and emmitt smith big year for means a lot of production for a second-round craft break terrell fletcher the rookie comes into the game flag is thrown humphreys goes down in the arms of phillips at the 47-yard line that'll be a holding call almost certainly when they hit the offensive lineman with the black that's a pretty good indicator it's thrown with a vengeance gotcha a tripping call against the chargers ron bachchan the umpire tossed that one into the backfield we have a tipping penalty number 77 on the offense 10 yard penalty repeat second down that's eric moton the left guard been a tremendous comeback story for the chargers that's a great story paul just completely blew his knee out a couple of years ago he has made the comeback working this time against keith's trailer there number 94. he goes down and flat on his back does a conrad dobler type move where he karate kicks him and brings him down [Applause] conrad in the stadium tonight second and 17 and humphreys gets sacked back in the 27 by george jameson but the pressure was trailer humphreys had to spin away from trader spun right in the arms of jameson boy and this time it's trailer against moton again and this time he beats moten to the inside the chargers trying to set up a screen to the far side of the field didn't happen well the chiefs are doing a fine job rotating the defensive line in and out of the lineup boy what they haven't people in there put the decibel meter to this crowd now on third and forever third and 26 at the 29-yard line three minutes to go in the third nice move well short of the first down but he takes it up to the 44-yard line and bennett will come into punt derek thomas was the chaser at that time well keep in mind even though it produced no points a very effective drive by the san diego chargers keep in mind this started back at their eight yard line they work this ball all the way up to the 43 and a half yard line so that's that's a pretty good job by their offense aaron bennett who at least statistically had the best day a punter has had in almost half a century last week and this one is a shank off the side of his foot that bounces inside the 20 or a mini shank anyway turns out to be pretty good though the flag gets thrown rolls dead at the 11 yard line down did somebody go out of bounds and come back in and touch this ball [Music] hey the mistakes continue to pile up for san diego last week 134 yards and penalties in the game in pittsburgh [Music] [Applause] 21 sports for on that infraction that is the call chuck free for the special teams coach i don't want him to kick it again well otherwise they have the ball at the 11 yard line it's not particularly advantageous for 223 left in the third quarter game tied to 13. howard rowe will tell us about it unsportsmanlike conduct on a kicking team 15-yard penalty ticking team member went out of bounds did not try and get back within a reasonable amount of time 15 yards re-kick had been knocked out and come right back onto the field and he was allowed to do that and of course the dreaded did not come back within a reasonable amount of time [Applause] we'll take a look at this let's watch the left side of our screen up around the 40. we see a couple chiefs up there oh there's a charger who's way out of bounds and yes you must make an effort to get back you must make an effort to get back onto the field of play that's willie clark i believe the cornerback number 31. where you go out you got to try to get back in so this forces another chargers punch and another mistake yes the six foot five australian who played australian rule monster kick major monster and fielded at the five yard line by van over and you're always using the term rookie mistake but here's the kid who at least played pro football last year in the canadian one you don't feel the kick at the five the law of physics does not allow a ball to go that far great guy turned green with envy [Music] from australia two punts tonight that last one 66 yards watch what he did last week this is andre hastings returning the kick in pittsburgh and here comes bennett that's rugby style too it is bobby beathard fined as a fumble out of bounds marcus allen coughed up the football but fortunately for him and the chiefs it rolls out of bounds and we've got an injured charger that's lewis bush the linebacker [Music] brought him back he was spectacular filling in for junior seau and has had a good night here tonight and that means that david brandon will come in to take his spotted outside linebacker with 205 remaining in the third in the game tied you betcha i'm just trying to stay in the town long enough to send my laundry out kansas city has it at the 17 lewis bush we have not a certain aroma bring it up there's anders taking it we can send it out for you well we're happy to report louis bush was able to walk off unaided when we went to commercial he was the injured charger and in fact he is now back in the game finally getting some stable play over in that corner david griggs the great linebacker played there for the chargers a year ago killed in an honorable black cement this past offseason and it's already missed by this team third down five with the 20. 115 left in the third the game is tied a little dump off over the middle pulled in by kimball anders and he gets taken down from behind the first is that leslie o'neil that came all the way across there no it's rayleigh johnson boy what great hustle by a defensive lineman to come all the way across the field and track a guy back down from behind rayleigh johnson the fastest of the charger defensive line boy really had a chance to demonstrate it there mentioned o'neill i mean leslie's had a pretty quiet night when you mention his name i'm thinking about how many times we pulled him i can't remember once you're right from the 26-yard line bono throws in his caught him in the 46th bike boston and he's tackled from behind by dennis gibson we said earlier once he gets the football he is dangerous one of the reasons that o'neill is quiet tonight john alt the pro bowl tackle over the left side the veteran of 12 years doing a fine job on leslie o'neill talking to art shell down on the field before the game he said hey just keep an eye on my guys and look at look at how well they're playing and he's right john all just representative of that group end of three the game time 13-13 monday night football resumes after this word for abc stations the chargers the first team since the 1935 packers to not allow a fourth quarter point through the first five games of the season as we start the fourth quarter the game is time and marcus allen takes the ball into san diego territory on a first and ten he picks up about five and junior seau makes the tackle well 13-13 here at the beginning of the fourth you have to wonder now if this game won't be decided by the first team that blinks wayne harper's still down on the ground but this is normally at that stage of the ball game where a mistake ends up being the difference between winning and losing and dwayne harper has been a rock over on the left side we've documented terence shaw and willie clark the problems they've had on the other side this could be a big blow for the chargers if harper doesn't return an injury time out here [Music] was that my imagination or was that kenny wolf singing in our ear i had my ifb down second down and six at the 47-yard line dean martin he wasn't here's a reverse says allen hands it to van over and he just does get tripped up oh louis lewis bush got a hand on him he made a good move that didn't we've heard a lot about this youngster we talked about him earlier good return man had a 99-yard kickoff return earlier in the season for a touchdown florida state two years there went to the canadian football league and then drafted when he was able to be drafted this year in the third round look at this move good job by leslie o'neil of forcing him back to the inside he was there for that reason o'neill set it up by playing his position staying home but watch this guy folks keep an eye on him he is going to be big time it's third and one and the chiefs to call the play take a city after the timeout and marcus allen picks up the first down as he takes it to the 40-yard line they call timeout run a pretty simple play give it to marcus and advance the sticks they keep a record for first downs picked up marcus allen has been used four times on third and short third and goal third and long if they do steve hurt would have it well i just sent him into shock down there i know that might take him all of 20 seconds to find it first down and 10 at the 40 yard line and the play fake good fake bonus throws and it drops kimball anders off his fingertips he does not do that there's one of those plays that could have made a difference [Applause] that could have made a difference that would have put the chiefs into scoring range they might still end up getting there but that would have done it all by itself they went double on the deep man and andrew as they hooked up with lewis bush he beat him by five yards down the sideline and after himono hitting the ball well the reverse action may fake and now andrews is beating bush down the sidelines linebacker against the back out of the backfield no match but they dropped the ball they caught the disease from san diego and marcus allen slices his way down to the 31-yard line a gain of close to nine it'll be third down in a yard or so what a great block up front by tim grunner the grenhard the center will shields the right guard they really opened a crease up in the middle [Applause] renhart that's a good name for the center reinhardt what do you got for the gold helmet or the fighting harris third down one davis oh and as he comes down he loses the football well i'm not sure did harper get a hand in there might have if he did that was one of the highlight reel plays davis had the football i think well dwayne harper i think is covering somebody else and falls back into it it's right there sean gale he's making the play and then in comes harper for the hit but really sean gale got the left hand effective work by both of those guys in the san diego secondary sean gale primarily harper's secondary 49-yard field goal attempt by lynn elliott good what a gamble by kansas city on third and one instead of moving into clear field goal range they opt for six the pass is broken up and they still come back and get it from 49 to go up by three remaining in regulation lynn elliott with a 49-yard field goal to give kansas city a three-point advantage and he sends this one down into the arms of andre coleman from the goal line behind a quick set of blockers up to the 26 yard line goes andre monday night football is being brought to you by lincoln mercury in the complete line of 1996 mercury automobiles valvoline the number one choice of america's top mechanics cannon mark collins is back in the game 1208 left in regulation san diego has it at the 27-yard line alfred's slant martin makes the catch up to the 36-yard line appears to be a little short of the first deal carter makes the tackle and he's still down [Music] out of tennessee shaken up in an injury timeout with 11 53 left in the fourth in the afternoon daryn anderson replaces dale carter at quarterback second and short and bees is taken down in the backfield a big play by vaughn booker [Applause] here in the second half the chiefs defense have been operating pretty much without derrick thomas he's been used as a spot player and i think goes back to that knee that he heard earlier in the game up to the top of your screen now here comes hooker i mean he's intentionally left unblocked the play is just supposed to happen faster than being chased down from the backside harry swain gets a gets a rub on him but that play's supposed to happen a lot quicker third and four flags are down i think you got a false start here guys the puno makes the catch i think harry swain the left tackle started out of his stance early and blame that on crowd noise and another mistake his 12 penalties last week we're going to have another one prior to the snap we got a full start on number 72 offense penalty [Applause] penalties decline brings up fourth down that's just strictly on the crowd noise as a tackle you're the guy who's farthest away from the quarterback it's the toughest for you to hear this is very interesting this fourth down is going to be fourth in about a foot san diego is on the sidelines i think they're thinking about maybe going for it [Applause] kansas city had some second thoughts about how they're going to take them and it's a good thing third down and nine terrell fletcher is in the game along with rodney harman harmon in motion [Applause] [Music] humphreys seeking the first down nice move there takes it for the 39 and gets the first down we saw him in the first half do something similar this time he knew that he had to pick up the first down it was third down to keep this drive alive and he was willing to sacrifice the old bod brian washington number 48 of the chief is one embarrassed sky watch right side with quarterbacks aren't supposed to be able to do that to strong safeties and he made washington pull a clean whip job first down up at the 39-yard line 10-10 left in regulation means joe phillips i think was the guy there andrew smith yeah [Applause] [Music] tonight it's been a very important game he tried to tell you throughout the game how important it is to both teams kansas city off the good start still trying to stay with the raiders they win the night they will dale carter back in the game at left corner bottom of the screen second down 13. a freeze and it's a low throw underneath intended for tony martin third down 13. well great afc west matchup tonight and next week efc west we go to mile high stadium always a tremendous treat on monday night the oakland raiders and the denver broncos classic rivalry next week on monday night football for the other former chief harvey williams had a great day yesterday for the raiders third down and 13. they have to get to the 49 to convert and a flag is thrown pass intended for mark says and it goes against kansas city [Applause] it might be illegal contact on cons since he also was in there locked up on manchester illegal contact number 40 defense five-yard penalty first down hey a very physical cornerback outstanding years with the jets and what he does after the five yards he makes that contact forcing the receiver out of bounds well after the five yards so a third and 13 becomes a first and ten with 9 20 left in regulation sheep's leading by three good protection swing pass means and natron takes it up to the 50-yard line there are those nimble feet that you talked about earlier frank you just wouldn't imagine that kind of dexter that nimbleness that ability to go both to the left and the right by a big big man george jameson shaking his head he thought he had him well back there almost at the line of scrimmage watch 57 jameson now this is a 245 pound running back and he's like a a little scat back making jameson missed davison hardy got a hand on him he made one guy miss and ran over another second and two means again takes the ball across the 50-yard line very close to a first down salimu and phillips in the middle of the action isn't that everything you could possibly hope for from a running back the the sweetness and the nibbleness of foot to make a guy cleanly miss and then he finishes off the play by lowering the shoulder and running right over somebody that's why they backed the bank brings truck up to his house and unloaded it yeah well bobby beathard wasn't driving it took a while yeah natron wanted to bring that up there but he held out there is bobby who has been a part of the six teams that have gone to super bowls miami washington and san diego through the years a little short boy this makes the most mistake about it this is his football team starting with stan humphries whom he drafted for the washington redskins was a sixth round draft pick back in 88. brought him out here in 92 brought in bobby ross he's brought him all in focused on defense too big vaughn parker number 70 checks in to play a tight end now we have a 300 pound tight end playing for the chargers michael cunningham the defensive coordinator looks on third and inches four chain links he's got enough first down [Music] stan humphreys to the 49-yard line under eight minutes now remaining in regulation what a nice little roll here after a couple of blowouts in our first couple of mondays games the 49ers and lions a terrific battle two weeks ago buffalo cleveland last week and a beauty tonight knock on woods yeah it's hard for after five after five games something to be quite this dramatic tonight i team to lose this is going to be in trouble in the afc west and i think both teams know it nothing new though for these guys to be playing it tight that's the tradition of this series one game last year 14-13 kansas city from the 49-yard line humphreys going deeper jefferson he makes the catch inside the 15 and is out of bounds at the four-yard line [Applause] well jefferson and carter were in a duel on the sidelines and jefferson won but credit the offensive line for san diego that took at least a count of four or count of five before he could release the football they gave him all kinds of it's a tremendous move by jefferson watch him stutter right there you see that stutter that just completely fools carter what a nice nice move by sean jefferson you're right you're right aided by the great pass protection oh that's a nifty move first and goal and stan humphries will take a timeout 6 56 left in regulation view of arrowhead stadium from the goodyear blimp eagle captain john creighton at the helm they didn't change that to like the dan deardorff uh balloon i loved it it was fun well i'm a pilot and i enjoy being up in the air a spectacular cool crisp evening here in western missouri and right now the chiefs the home team up against their own goal line nursing a three-point lead this san diego team you have got to admire their heart they have been in a real battle here tonight and just a great effort by jefferson a moment ago and by that offensive line to give humphreys a chance to put the ball up if he already put it up there perfect frank they're the afc champions they're not rolling over first and goal inside the four means the tailback humphreys rolling dumps it touchdown threw it into the arms of shannon mitchell who'd lined up as the blocking back as the fullback on that play and mitchell with a touchdown and humphries with just enough of a threat of the run on the bootleg and it pulled the linebacker up and allowed mitchell to well mitchell into the open mitchell's down on the ground you know mitchell lines up at fullback and makes a block and is in all fours no wonder the chief's defense loses track of him and there is the flip tracy rogers almost gets a hand on it but it's no wonder that he is wide open that is a brilliant job of faking by shannon mitchell going all the way to the ground mitchell's first catch of the season first touchdown of his career carney puts them up by four there's a flag down at the line of scrimmage shannon mitchell he almost had a catch last week in pittsburgh but it was one of those plays where it went through his hands and it was intercepted and run back for a touchdown defense offsides kick is good penalized five yards on a kickoff 650 remaining in the fourth quarter bobby ross who guided his team to the super bowl and we talked to him in august this year we did a pre-season game and we asked him how long did it take you to forget about that loss of the super bowl he says i still think about it every day and i'm picked off look at the right side of your screen there's shannon mitchell 89 now he's going to go in and go to the ground there he is right there on the ground and no wonder all the chief defenders lose sight of him the guy is on the ground out of the play he was the prime lieutenant receiver that was dwayne young in the back of the end zone that humphrey was looking for and shannon mitchell made a great play to keep it alive and you're just asking the impossible of the chiefs to keep track of him and a very heads-up alert play by mitchell and humphreys biggest play on that drive a penalty against james hasty it was third and 13 and hasty with the illegal contact from the 36-yard line of san diego and then jefferson made the catch down the sideline and in they go well humphrey was the man on that drive remember the third down dive for the first down that play there the past two jefferson a spectacular drive by quarterback stan humphreys barney's kick fan over at the goal line and tackled at the 16. good kick when you pin a guy into the corner like that fletcher makes the tackle yeah not very good blocking by the chief special teams van over never had a shot 16-yard return first down the bird now on the chiefs we gotta buckle it up [Applause] and they are a long way from a touchdown field goal will not get it down at this point first and ten at the 16-yard line they begin this drive with a sweep by marcus allen a little page out of the student body right days in sc except that time the chargers are right there to stop after a minimal game dwayne harper was the tackle you know the other thing to keep in mind here is is even though steve bono has been around this game forever he's not been in this situation that many times here late in the fourth quarter where his team is trailing and he's got to rally them for the winning score this is only his 17th start over the 11 years he's been in this league in many ways he's still a very young quarterback in terms of pressure experience like this second and ten a lot of factor there in a one-handed grab made by walker and walker with a terrific action comes close to picking up a first down it'll be third and very short i might point out in those 16 starts dan he's 11 and five as a winner there was really a defining moment this year when they were down 14 to nothing to the giants and he came back doing a couple touchdown passes look at this catch me by derrick walker but that was when i think they realized right here in kansas city montana was really gone bono is really the man and he did a superb job and he's doing one third in the yard from the 25. [Music] that is a tremendous stop he's just going to force him in again with seau i think well this is a huge play because they don't pick up the first down and either you're forced to go for it or to kick and if you kick san diego can start taking some time off the clock well this is sc against sc what a monster hit remember early in the game we showed it seau missed this time he didn't miss no he did not you're right gibson got there second that is junior seau there's gibson from the inside actually they both about hit him at the same time don't they what a couple of big time hits actually gibson is on him first seau comes in with the big whack and a brilliant play by the chargers defensively [Applause] and on fourth down and a short one the chiefs have to kick less than five minutes to go and now san diego has the opportunity when they get the ball back clearly to take some time off the clock and perhaps make kansas city use its remaining timeouts which number two agar the league's leading punter coming into the game coleman from his 29 drops to football and just falls on it andre coleman had the fumble before that led to the kc touchdown gun shy on a fair caption richardson he just wants to go home can't grab a plane you see him he took his eyes off the ball did not look it into his hands he did the smart thing right here lucky it didn't bounce any any further away from him than it did well he handles the ball like all good pump return man do he does it with the hands you usually won't get a big bounce off your chest or something only handle with your hands only five yards separate the two teams in total offense but extremely even in both running and passing mirror image game here's means going nowhere stopped for a loss of one back at the 28-yard line it's going to be second and 11. look at every kansas city chief trying to dig that football from out of the arms of natron means this is a this is a very critical situation here in which to pick up a first down or not because the chiefs want to conserve those timeouts but if san diego gets a first down here then kansas city is going to have to start taking their timeouts or they're just digging digging bigger trying to get that ball out of there neil smith this is time for two-handed ball coverage by the charger that's all they're talking about in the defensive handle let's second the 11. here is means going nowhere dragged down by sally amua clock ticks down to 350. the chargers going without eric moulton he is out of the game with a bruised right knee now and joe cacuzzo takes his spot at guard left forward okay for an interior alignment dan salimua at six feet tall 315 pounds is about as quick as you're going to find where is moton over on the san diego charger sideline we're told he has a bruised right knee they could use him in there right now the chiefs were forced to not force but the chiefs took a timeout right there and that leaves them with only one three minutes and 47 seconds left and they're trailing by four and they'd like to have more than one timeout now they have one and the two minute warning but it's incumbent upon the chiefs here to stop san diego on this play otherwise either a good part of the clock or the timeout will evaporate for both flash shows baby blues [Music] beautiful ball at the 28th third and 11. flag chiefs jump carmen breaks a tackle the play is still alive ronnie harmon out of bounds at the kansas city 28-yard line he broke a martin bayless tackle neal smith had come across the line i don't think he was drawn off so it's going to work against kansas city and i think harmon thought he might have been out of bounds before he wasn't and he looked down and saw that he wasn't and this is going to work against the chiefs it was neal smith number 90 defense penalties declined result of the play it's a completed pass for first down huge huge play ronnie armand i seriously think he thought he might have been out of bounds looked down and saw that he wasn't the chief kind of gave up on him right there oh look look at him yeah no oh yeah i'm still alive alive for a 44-yard game oh wow alive for a back-breaking play from his own 28 to their 28. here comes some natron [Music] what a shocker there the clock will stop at the two-minute warning just like say hello to tony depart he's a musical director guys here for the kansas city chiefs he's never missed a game since they came to kansas city he did an automobile accident this is the first game that he's missed and all the chief fans and all the players are very concerned about his recovery and he's doing well so tony enjoy it [Applause] [Music] 16-yard line at a first down [Music] mark collins makes the tackle well we have seen here in the fourth quarter and it started to happen in the third quarter you touched on it earlier frank this san diego charger offensive line huge and physical beginning to assert themselves and there was an excellent illustration of it right there monster hole in the kansas city defensive line okay that play by harm and took a lot out of the chiefs 225 clock running first down 17. harmon tackles back of the line of scrimmage by vaughn booker now kansas city takes its last timeout that'll stop the clock with 216. then the two-minute warning will stop the clock and if they hold them it will be third down and then at least hold them to a field goal attempt which would keep them very much in the game down by seven but without a timeout maybe a minute left on the clock if they get the ball back we started tonight talking about san diego and bobby ross last night telling us this game will tell us a lot about ourselves this was a critical critical game for the san diego chargers swing game in a way to stay right in the race in dallas coming up on sunday still they have made a lot of mistakes they have hurt themselves tonight if you if you if they were to play a more perfect game if you look at bobby bethler the hobby better the man who put this together if they would have not had all those penalties the drop passes even in this game this sucker might not be this close they have again continue to hurt themselves even though they're in great shape at the moment [Applause] [Music] this is the time of the game where yeah you're feeling what's been happening for the last three hours you are tired you are whipped you are sore you're in pain and you're in trouble and still you got to try to come up with a big play second down 14 from the 21-yard line humphreys is going to throw and completes it to the 10-yard line and that'll write a finish to it as dwayne young makes the tackle but humphreys gets blacked by and stan is dangling that right arm oh he's tough remember a year ago he dislocated his elbow and stand this one game but this is a she looks like it's going to be a shoulder gail gilbert is the backup quarterback we come to the two-minute warning the chargers can run the clock out oh what about state alex he falls on that elbow the worst place you can fall on behalf of the chief's organization players and coaches dan humphries i watch humphreys goes down he puts the right arm out lands on the elbow and that shock generates into the shoulder and he tried to come back out onto the field and he realized he couldn't do it and he has gone out and gail gilbert has come in and this is stan humphries on the sidelines and there has to be a lot of concern because that is his throwing arm and they have done the wise thing with gilbert in here you must cleanly handle now the center quarterback exchange but humphreys came back out he was going to try it i realized he couldn't do it well they can just run a couple of plays and run the clock out it's third down and two they can pick up the first down here as stock just short of the 10 yard line as natron means boy anthony davis gets in there i believe and makes a big tackle by anthony davis but do you kick the field goal to give you a seven point lead or do you run the ball again and get the clock started because if you come up short the clock stops at the end of the play at the 11 yard line they're going to take it all the way down to one on the play clock if they can and then stop the clock with a timeout i can't imagine that they wouldn't kick the field i can't imagine either protect yourself with a seven point lead the worst that can happen to you is is a you either go into overtime if they tie it you could lose it if they go for it the two and it's the chip shot yeah i can't put the three up there and [Music] we got one of the best kickers ever to kick in this game john carney who's made two tonight one from 28 one from 36. a minute and 16 remaining when the chiefs get the ball back they do not have a timeout john carney from 20-29 yards has missed only two of 53 in his pretty stellar career right now the chiefs wish that albert lewis was still playing it'd be great to do the great cornerback at the chiefs very adept at blocking blocking field goals alex spanos there on the right bobby beathard on the left neither winner looking mightily concerned about what happens here with this john carney field goal 29-yard attempt and that is good [Music] as he and gilbert converse he goes out on the field to administer some left-handed high-fives this is a guy playing hurt what a motion what leadership what a player he is the real deal you go back to the very beginning of tonight's game after about four or five plays it looked like he might have to come out for the rest of the night in obvious agony and there he is with a minute and 12 remaining [Applause] arrowhead pretty quiet right now it's going to get noisy in a minute though again well if the chargers if carney kicks it deep we'll get another chance to see what tamerick van over can do paul hackett the offensive coordinator what kind of what kind of plays does he have in store no timeouts to work with again the clock not the friend of the chief van over the florida state marcus allen you saw the third youngest player and there's one of the oldest in the league vanover ran a kickoff back for a touchdown against seattle on opening day for 99 yards first time he'd ever touched the ball in the nfl well he's got this one at the one does history repeat itself not even close up to the 21-yard line so we'll have to move 79 yards in 66 seconds with nary a timeout well i think the guy you got to look to in this situation is number 84 willie davis he's the fastest of the of the chiefs wide receivers van over probably is a little faster than than davis but davis has been the go-to guy [Music] they can't look to get it in one shot they're gonna have to get a lot of it in about three different pieces yeah they they need a 30-yard piece somewhere in the puzzle davis and slaughter both sent to the left and dawson to the right and it's ticked at the line of scrimmage and then complete will be second down and 10. that time obviously looking to get the ball to anders on the short pass and getting a big run after the completion [Music] and bono and rayleigh johnson and johnson he's played a great game for the charges tonight this guy has been everywhere of course what a superb athlete that covers a lot of ground i think big 6-3 about 262-65 second down 10 from the 21. finds the open man getting loose at the 45-yard line as lake dawson and fights his way to the 48-yard line first and ten at the 48. no timeouts well i think the chargers are being mighty nice getting back on the other side of the ball in a much bigger hurry than i would have and bono spikes it with 40 seconds second down i think those charger defensive lineman might have been able to milk a few more seconds out of that than they did they've ate off with his prevent defense everything keep it contained to the inside giving nothing deep where they can get it out of bounds dave adolf a year ago was walking the same side of the sidelines as marty schottenheimer well bono has sure been on the sidelines enough watching his mentor joe montana in similar situations second down and 10 from the 47-yard line and willie davis makes the catch and steps out of bounds to stop the clock at the 45 but now it's third down and three that's a give me by the chargers they'll give that up the rest of the night there isn't much of it it's only 35 seconds long unless they get in the end zone and that's why they're willing to give it [Music] this knight could go on if they get into the end zone we could overtime in all likelihood third down and three [Music] that took five seconds and no easy catch frank that that's a ball that a lot of facts could have dropped he's caught a lot of balls at a lot of backstory that's a nice play by marc gazelle they're not going to get in there five yarding the san diego defense no but they needed the first down that that's the time that they that they had to go for the short yardage play to pick up the first down had to convert now they can take four shots at the end zone in db [Applause] far side catch made slaughter he's out of bounds at the 23-yard line on the first down now that's a little more than the five or seven yards that's what they needed the chargers want to give up that's too easy they could even think over the middle for one play get it in close [Applause] this is slaughter talked about him earlier great years with cleveland and houston played for marty at cleveland bono's not thrown for 311 yards across it's a free play bono throws nothing happening in the end zone and sean lee was the guy who came across i wondered what i wonder if he made contact if he made contact they'll put the time back on the clock because it never happened as it turned out the clock only ticked down one second anyway offside advance number 98 five yard penalty repeat first down well if he didn't touch if he didn't make contact with the kansas city offensive lineman a lot more time than that should have run off the clock well exactly that it was 25 seconds at the start of that play right now it's it's 24 seconds why the the the official should change the clock exactly it should go back to 25 but why didn't it take on as that play developed well they should run some time off the clock because the clock is right cocker's right with 24 seconds oh i don't see how that could be true howard if there wasn't contact the clock should be right at 25 seconds there it is see the play starts at 25 but if he set the penalty but al if he doesn't make contact the clock continues to run well they did and they took the one second at the end obviously there's a bit of a foul bono throws into the end zone intended for slaughter and he's covered by three defenders it'll be second down and that took four seconds off the clock so i think san diego has come out on the short end of the clock here that's yeah actually they started that very late into that play that clock should have started at the snap of the football and continued [Music] what a great catch [Applause] can you believe this with joe montana derrick walker has had a huge game and now marty schottenheimer i think has a no-brainer of a decision you kick this and go to overtime and he stands the place kicker lynn elliott out onto the field with 15 seconds remaining keith cash the tight end who would be starting unable to play tonight derrick walker has turned in a fine game and this probably the crowning play of his nfl career elliott now to try to tie the game and keep in mind stan humphries may be done game is tied [Applause] and don't think that the stan humphreys injury does not come into the thinking of marty schottenheimer when he's looking at tying up this ball game with 15 seconds left boy this game was in the bank for the san diego chargers and i talked at the beginning of this drive about steve bono not having been in this situation many times before he has passed the test big time well it's going to fall to gail gilbert it appears for the charges what a strike let us try yes sir the chargers came into this game yielding the fewest yards per game and the fewest passing yards per game in the nfl this season and kansas city goes 79 yards at 57 seconds without a timeout sometimes you feel like saying take that prevent defense you know what with it that's exactly right because i think back to the one play that was completely uncontested the sideline passed to webster slaughter for about a yard that's right and set him up to be in a position to throw the ball into the end zone without it having to be some type of a hail mary pass and now the credit to the [Music] now the next the next critical call in this game will be heads or tails [Music] he's they'll flip a coin before we go to overtime kicking off for the chiefs and he says the ground ball fields it up at the 26 yard line by andre coleman and he gets it up to the line 38 clock stops at 10 seconds remaining in regulation there's regen the offensive coordinator for the charges lin swan what you got well al the story down here is that it's a sprained shoulder and i looked at stan humphries i touched my shoulder he looked at me just shook his head he is not going to go back into this ball game into overtime gail gilbert long time back up at buffalo very little experience in here now at the 37-yard line they need about 30 about 30 yards to get someplace where kearney could have a chance gilbert throws and that took five seconds incomplete and send it to tony martin now your best advisor is to kneel it down and take your chances on the coin flip well i think you could throw one down there and hope for an interference call exactly cool hail mary even though the clock would expire it can't end on a defensive penalty if if if the chiefs would get called for a defensive penalty you could run carney out there and kick it you could also have an interception run back for a touchdown something that happened to him twice last week [Music] 19-yard line that's brian washington and that'll send us to overtime well well well haven't had one of these for a while [Applause] [Music] so over time we go and back we come after this from our av four of them yesterday gary anderson's field goal won the philadelphia washington game from 35 yards it was good a field goal in miami culminating indianapolis has come back from 21 down to beat the dolphins 27-24 houston and minnesota and this one ended with a touchdown run from the 20-yard line robert smith took it into the end zone as the vikings took care of the houston oilers and the game at the meadowlands arizona against the giants also went into overtime and that one ended with a touchdown on this pass which was picked off at the 41-yard line by jesse armstead and run back for a touchdown and for the first time in the history of the national football league five games in one weekend go to ot and san diego receiving the kick lynne elliott kicking off from the 30-yard line andre coleman back deep inside the five and now a huge burden falls on all the members of the charger offensive team to help out gail gilbert gilbert started one game last year and lost that in atlanta of course he spent so many years behind jim kelly in buffalo four-yard line andre coleman [Music] pass to 25 taken down at the 28-yard line tackle made by darren anderson gail gilbert has been in the national football league since 1985. he has made three starts [Applause] last year as i mentioned against atlanta and humphreys was recovering from the dislocated elbow and so many years up at uh buffalo started out in seattle i think spent a couple years there out of the university of california this is a situation though where their line has to block better than they've blocked all day the receivers have got to catch everything everybody needs to pick it up a notch gilbert swing fast natron means picks up four tackled by neil smith [Applause] and kneel slow and rising this has been a brutal game physically [Applause] not made any easier by having to strap on natron means [Applause] natron may weigh more than neal when you can be a defensive lineman slip along the line of scrimmage and dump memes for a loss they're doing a good job second and eleven the catchers made it's tony martin taking it up to the 36 yard line james hasty makes the stop it'll be third down and two in overtime it's played with fourth quarter rules teams have two timeouts well thrown and right on the numbers this time tony martin looking it in concentrating and a fine pass by gilbert yeah he's he threw that like he's been in all day third down in the long two where they need derrick thomas to come up big if you're kansas city well dan sally lua came up too big unless he was drawn off that's going to be a first down for san diego encroachment on a defense contact by the nose guard prior to the snap five yard penalty first down first down making it way too easy from san diego up in pretty good field position here your own 40-yard line [Music] and i if i'm san diego i like what i saw on that quick slant thrown by gilbert means cuts to the outside and knifing in is tracy simeon to wrap him up after a very small game and that's how you handle a back like natron means a swarming defense slowing up with the contact and then just having great pursuit well right now if you're gunther cunningham and you're the you're the kansas city defensive team you're going to crowd the line of scrimmage you're going to play eight guys up in the vicinity of that line of scrimmage and force gail gilbert to get them into the field goal range by throwing the football second and nine lofted into the arms of memes and natron is tackled up at the 48-yard line about two and a half yards short of the first good tackle by simeon getting out from the seven yards middle linebacker position and all by himself bringing means down and that's not easy no mean people two minutes 45 seconds into overtime third down and a very short three and the play clock down to four and they take a timeout one of two you're allowed in overtime a very tense game in overtime eventually before the rules are the same as they are in the fourth quarter of the game outside of the fact the team is allowed two timeouts san diego just used one we've played two minutes and 57 seconds sudden death overtime san diego third down on a short three means on the sidelines would indicate that san diego with three in a long three and right below gonna put it in the air and ronnie harmon is into the backfield and if you're calling plays as ralph bridgen is up here at arrowhead stadium up in the press box somehow would be a good move to get the ball into the hands of ronnie harmon [Music] third down short three jefferson the motion man roll left pressure sets up throws and the catch is somehow made by jefferson he threw that in first out jefferson came down with it and a great effort on the part of gilbert just to avoid being sacked keith traylor just knocks gail gilbert forces him about seven or eight yards back off of his heels gilbert is able to make this completion to jefferson i don't know how he did it i don't think jefferson was the receiver [Applause] what a play i'm not sure that tony martin wasn't the intended receiver i think he was improvisation and a first down and one more first down we'll put them in long field goal range and again it's sally yamula this time along with well we've got a cooker coming across we've got a new quarterback in the game and gail gilbert and the kansas city defensive line used to humphrey number 97 defense and they are being victimized through the snap five yard penalty repeat first down these guys two used to stan humphreys aren't used to gail gilbert and he's killing him second time here in overtime that they've drawn this group offside he's moving around pretty good back there too gail gilbert unlike stan humphries i'm surprised they allowed it that's the second time sally moves across the ball first and five at the 40-yard line means knifes his way for a gain of a yard to the 39. so right now if they don't gain another yard it should be about a 56 yard attempt for that man kearney whose career long is 54 against seattle in 1991 and last year he was two for two from 50 plus he is not known as a long kicker you see what gilbert did that last time after drawing them offsides he comes up and goes on the quick goes on the quick snap and amazingly this is the first time in four years with the chargers if bobby ross has found himself in overtime second down four at the 39-yard line means tackled back to the line of scrimmage huge play by vaughn booker all right vaughn it was a good play choke your motor a little bit [Applause] means tackled back at the 43-yard line third down and eight that was a [Applause] stellar play right there it takes a big hit to knock natron means backwards and that's what booker was able to do but if you got him going laterally you've got him looked like booker t and the mg's at the end of that goodbye he swallowed up at the 50. neal smith and derek thomas they were big when they had to be scrambled the eggs we might be here till breakfast [Music] five and a half minutes into overtime darren bennett to kick now this is where bennett needs to show a little touch and not just launch some cannon shot into the end zone he did show some touch fair catch called for and made at the 14 yard line well done by bennett that over pulls it in and now kansas city will have the ball for the first time in overtime [Applause] well vaughn booker got it started with that hit on natron means and then the charger pockets just collapsed on that man's quarterback alex [Music] he's seen it all tonight and there is the his adversary [Applause] lamar hunt who's long time original and long time owner of the kansas city chief that's the tall man with him long-time friend associates here's allen picking up just a yard over the right side of the 15-yard line second to nine fans do not like that ball getting down to inside nine minutes in case you're wondering it could end up in a tie i think see that's why i think the fans are a little off base and booing a running play just because you're in overtime doesn't mean you you throw the ball every time that's being a little i think a little harsh [Music] had it at about the 22-yard line and couldn't handle it willie davis gave san diego its biggest break of the night and they couldn't cash in bush had a chance to win a game oh boy he'll see that ball floating down at him in slow motion for a long time to come well thrown ball right into the hands of willie davis bounced right off his face mask i believe and it's just perfect set up for bush just perfect it's coming down soft and slow almost third down nine now at the 15 yard line davis in motion here comes sam charging from the outside and it is incomplete as lake dawson almost becomes a defender on the play that's what he did harp recovering junior and the boys make quick work of kansas city's offense three and out dave adolph who used to be here naf in san diego say out blitzes very infrequently boy now the pressure's on louis aguiare is it ever he needs to come up big and here we go again andre coleman coleman's only standing at his own 40. he's averaging over 14 yards of return he has put the excitement back in the punt return hasn't he's 45 yards away from the line of scrimmage as aggie are sends one that will be fair caught at the 43-yard line by andre kim i'm not sure coleman would return a punt if every guy on the kansas city cover team fell down not tonight jack from that kickoff tumble early in the game if you were with us and he has been very cautious if you're just picking us up joining us very late in overtime after kansas city rallied down by seven in the waning moments of regulation without a timeout marching 79 yards stan humphreys hurt just prior to the two-minute warning and out for the rest of the night well marty scheinheimer's ball club right now is playing with field position fire san diego has the good field possession and in overtime that'll win you a football game gilbert guns in all kinds of contact and incomplete but they're going to rule in incidental contact with carter and jefferson well falling all over each other dale carter had great position and gilbert tried to gun it into jefferson and carter unfortunately for carter tripped over jefferson as he came back to make a play on the ball for the interception and he well could have intercepted that ball that was kind of turned about as fair play because i think jefferson fell down first they were both on the ground second and ten six minutes 45 seconds into the 15-minute overtime sudden death catch made up at the no not made up at the 49-yard line mark say couldn't handle it [Music] [Applause] collins with the coverage third down now third and ten well the pressure really on gail gilbert he'll get pressure from the kansas city chiefs defense he has to take this ball up field if he's looking for a first down as we look at say coming across the middle another one he should have had didn't have or these guys drop a lot of pass but gilbert has got to try to get the completion but also avoid the turnover third down and 10. gilbert as he goes down throws and that's dropped and incomplete neal smith i think was the guy and they're going to rule them down at the 38-yard line so they'll give neal the sack then comes oh big leg darren bennett he'll be able to kick away on this and here is neal smith who's playing a whale of a game tonight we've stan brock have been dueling all night and that's a good call by the officials neal smith knocked gilbert to his knee before he threw that ball the rookie van over boy did he lock that one he fields at the 14-yard line uh-oh that over up past the 30. he's gone van over is almost gone and now he is officially gone no flag we've been talking about him all night no flags this game's over we didn't have to wait that long dan [Applause] tomeric van
