[Music] welcome to Arrowhead Stadium the Cincinnati Bengals and the Kansas City Chiefs on an absolutely gorgeous Sunday afternoon in Kansas City I'm Charlie Jones along with Todd Christian said the one question all week long everybody asked Adalia star with Joe Montana star Joe Montana is not gonna start he's gonna be the emergency third quarterback does not take a single snap during the week of practice but it's a good thing that they have Dave Craig more and more throughout the National Football League we're realizing the teams to be successful have to have two quarterbacks and Dave Craig last year won 10 games as the starting quarterback for Kansas City but to win in the National Football League it takes more than your quarterback you do it defensively and that is pointed out by the last five Super Bowl winners to get to the Big Dance you have to play some defense take a look at Dallas Washington Giants and San Francisco all in the top five in total defensive rank and how does that apply to the Kansas City Chiefs well the Kansas City Chiefs are second in the National Football League but you take a look at some of the other teams the Giants Minnesota Raiders Pittsburgh are they going to be in the Superbowl I'd have to say at this point Charlie we're only a fourth of the way through the season or remains to be seen those are just the early returns you might say now if the Kansas City Chiefs were to dominate they can rely on two men one of whom is one of them has to be Neal's yes four sacks last week against the Los Angeles Raiders the franchise player and of course the other guy who they looked to as Derrick Thomas their rush backer but look for Neal Smith to be dominant today he came on with a bang after having some contractual problems early season and here is Marty Schottenheimer the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs their record is three in one and Dave Shula he is still looking for his first victory of the season four the Cincinnati Bengals [Applause] whether we said it was gorgeous we weren't kidding it is 51 degrees a little t56 but this is football weather in the Midwest and the forecast is clear and more of the same Cincinnati won the toss they will be receiving that means of course at number eight Nick Lowery will be kicking off with Eric Bell and Patrick Robinson [Music] [Applause] the engine we're the touchback and Cincinnati will start from their own 20 yard line first down an offensive line for Cincinnati out in front of the young quarterback Dave wingler will be Joe Walter Moyer kazursky ray um and Jones Klinger that we talked about with green Fenner Laurie Pickens [Applause] [Music] first down [Applause] and the [Music] salia Moya is here to wrap up pick up breathe and Cincinnati would like to establish your running game but it is going to be very difficult to establish it against this front seven Oh Smith Phillips a Lemuel Thomas Rogers Simeon and the secondary Lewis Ross Whitmore and when they go to their dime package Dale Carter former starter at corner arguably the best specialty for the National Football League Bennie Thompson [Applause] making his presence at the beginning of the bargain well it wasn't coincidental the fact in the Kansas City Chiefs are first in the National Football League against the run only giving up 48 yards a game you could see Sally Ulua just comes down comes on a stunt comes over he's absolutely untouched and gets better and puts him down on the 12 let's not forget also Charlie with the sense than successful running the ball the 27th in the league in that category down in 17 and they take a straight shot at the men already well at that point 30:17 the very thing that they didn't want to do is get the crowd into the game early and that's exactly what's happened so will be kicking to the Chiefs day Oh Carter [Music] shitty accent the open for the first time in the road no score and a return on good kick [Applause] [Music] at the 40 yards 25 Cincinnati's got and the Bengals come up with it at the Ricardo McDonald knocked it loose from the old Carter by Ricardo McDonald well the wages to look on the right side watch a crushing block there that Springs him and Carter makes all the moves now the last guy there is the punter that's exactly what it is lee johnson strips him but can't hold onto himself it lays there comes the ground and their current recovery is made by leonard wheeler look at the right hand here the fighter you don't need to see him clever enough to do that Lee Johnson former BYU cutter he's able to strip the ball loose big turnover to the bank [Applause] [Music] [Applause] this time for their own 25-yard line they stay on the ground he's going to pick up a couple of yards on the right side Tracy Simeon was there for Kansas City and it's going to be second down and a pale green is somebody they've been counting on memorized you Charlie 1100 yard rusher and a Pro Bowler this year he has really struggled his average per carry is less than two yards and certainly you can blame some of that on his holdout and the shuffling in the offensive line but Harold Greene really has to get it going for the bangers side playing there steps away gets a block in the knee slides and he's going to pick up the first verse down in the ballgame forceps Amanda one of the things that Marty Schottenheimer told us about David cleaners that he was tough to knock down watch from the left of your screen Derrick Thomas is going to come in he's got the sack but he can't wrap him up 64 215 and now Cleveland takes off athletic ability after running that run and shoot there Houston you can see and he does pick up the first down excellent athletic play by the young quarterback and neo Smith came limping out of the ballgame for Kansas City first down Cincinnati no score in the ball game the ball of the Bengal 36 yard line they go back to the ground and that's where they prefer to stay and Harold Greene is he may get a yard that's going to be it it'll be says Charlie second down and nine as we mentioned at the top it's Kansas City Chiefs and how successful they have been top city stops take a look at where they rank first in all these very significant categories rush defense opponents points per game an average game per play we mentioned the fact that Joe Montana really overshadows that really the success and the defensive cell and again Cincinnati staying on the ground Harold Greene gets a call here go to the 41 he's going to pick up about three on the play so it was going to be third down insect berry interesting point here Charlie David Shula told us yesterday we're very committed to the Roger thus far that's exactly what's happened and that during they had a bye last week they made some adjustments in their running game particularly inside running game from tackle attack I think they'll acknowledge the fact that maybe they don't have quite the athletes that the teams did but they can take some time off [Applause] from the shotgun and the bass is incomplete Jeff quarry the antenna receiver we have a flag down and Lee Hamm clinger down Albert Lewis came on the corner blitz an absolutely hammered clinger and that's what the penalty was roughing the passer it came with a flanker screen to the left and Klingon really took a shot remember two weeks ago Charley we had the game against the Seattle Seahawks his head hit the turf he had a concussion then he is motionless right now [Applause] here he comes right into his face jumps up and jumps into his face and hits him in the head and hitting the into the head right there right there at the last you could gosh as he pulls his neck oh no no no that's just you know what the ball is gone that's just totally unnecessary I'm glad he's standing up and he's alright why do you have to do that alright link the hit when the ball is long gone what's the point of that no point it I'll point it off so with the penalty the var goes to the 44 yard line of Kansas City [Applause] [Music] trader came into the I mentioned the concussion did a very good job and Cincinnati continues to stay on the ground Harold Green is going to go to the 41 yard line and now Klinger is back in that's good to see inevitably when you see that Nick go back and his feet are planted his back goes back that's always frightening others yes a young neck [Applause] Kansas City is this time on the left side I means to the 39 maybe the 38 yard line Tim Newton makes the tackle for the Kansas City chief Joe Phillips is also there let's certainly test the resolve of Klinger here on third down is he well enough to be able to throw after just look at this right here now at the end of the play right here why does he have to drag his right hand across his head [Applause] at the 39-yard line [Applause] he is going they're going to the 30-yard line and pick up the first down Derek Fenner picks up the first down for Cincinnati one thing that has happened is with Neil Smith on the bench they switched sides and they had Derrick Thomas their rush backer on the left defensive end watch him come up the field number 50 and he literally takes herself out of the play you can see right there number 48 pushing Derrick Thomas out of the play enabling Center to cut upfield get the easy first down it's all well and good we have great pass rushers but they have a tendency to take themselves out of the runs that's exactly what happened [Applause] there is a stiff iron by Green he tries to get around the corner David Whitmore lose out from defensive safety to make the tackle early in the game Cleveland has a touchdown lead over Miami this is interesting we mentioned the first series three and out the crowd went crazy now after the turnover a lot less noise I noticed that's exactly what David Schuler was looking for hoping that the offensive Cincinnati early on would take the crowd out [Applause] once they get into it cause a lot of penalties the Chiefs have faced here because it's simply the opposite zero green again with a call and the running game now takes Cincinnati to the 25-yard line at Kansas City where it is going to be third down you can see that there are the graphic there in 1992 1170 yards and a Pro Bowl here 1993 only 57 yards it goes without saying that hero Breda struggle duck belfry is the field goal kicker for the Cincinnati Bengals has not been that successful as [Applause] three of seven good protection drops it first down and out of bounds is Reggie Rembert who has become mister third down for the Cincinnati Bengals excellent pass protection by the front line of Cincinnati Reggie Redbird comes across on the crossing route he'll come into your screen from the right unencumbered his man evidently got picked off remember 6 foot 5 210 pounds is a load after he catches the ball for the protection by pork Lamar in that case is outstanding so it is first down in doll we have sex [Applause] Charlie that's gotta make that's one [Music] Tony McGee wide open and he overthrew oh he really did Oh touchdown got away from Cincinnati Traci Rogers had him in man coverage and they're actually discussing this now he's going to run with what's and out and up move but he buys the outfit look at him as he goes up and clinging I just had a little bit too much on it or else you're right chalk it out have been assured touchdown but Guillen is really establishing some last game a big game against the Seattle Seahawks seven catches he's established himself as a quality pass-catching tight end checking down [Music] and here is green he'll spend - about the five where it's going to be third down and goal to go the interior defensive line of Kansas City all had a piece of that boy you know if you know we've done this enough that you know my favorite play is down here when you got a quarterback like this I really like a quarterback draw got the big tough kid you know said he 159 could run and he can run take the three steps back have the big guys come from the outside of the pass rush this is what the the Bengals have done inside the 20 [Applause] I'd like to see that [Applause] Fyers passes behind the intended receiver who is Jeff quarry and it will be fourth down and the field goal team will come in well that was ill-advised even if he catches the ball he's at the five yard line he's gonna get stuffed he had Pickens open in the middle of the field but clearly what happens with the young quarterback he rolls right and makes the decision before he looks one two three he's looking at one guy there's the throw behind even if Corey makes the catch he's gonna get stuck there at the five now normally you would think of this as a sure thing but as you mentioned earlier Pelphrey has really struggled he's hit only three of seven at two block two blocks vehicles exactly attempt 223 yards and this one is good from 23 yards away in Cincinnati moves out in front by a score of 3-2 another one NBC is brought to you by coca-cola classic always the real thing always coca-cola by Mazda Mazda it just feels right buy your Allstate agent for home auto life and business insurance you're in good hands with Allstate and by Goodyear number one in tires and the city will move on office for the first time in the VAR game from their own 36 yard line trailing by a score of three to nothing Dave Craig is the quarterback he goes to Kimble Landers and now let's go back and take a look at number 37 Leonard wheeler the Cincinnati Bengals and see if you can find something wrong it's easily explained see he came down and he bumped a guy and then this guy bumped him and that's the penalty yeah that makes a lot of sense I don't get it what are you talking about that's absolutely nuts there was not a penalty there no I don't get that at all no especially incorrectly from wrongdoing the defensive people get to be a little bit of grass I said where was that that's the strength second down and seven it's the back of a Cincinnati Bengal and it is incomplete now for an update let's go to New York City all right Charlie first possession of the day for the home team in Cleveland culminates in a 14 yard pass from Cozart of Michael Jackson as the Browns go up 7 nothing on Miami this was set up by a Jackson to Eric Metcalf in down past and it is Cleveland 7 Miami nothing back to Charlie and Todd and here the score is Cincinnati 3 in Kansas City nothing with 441 time remaining we're in the first quarter first time the Chiefs have been on offense and now they face a third and seven protection fires into a crowd and it is incomplete he goes to Mike dial the tight end the bingos had double coverage lance gun and rod Jones were there and it will be fourth down and the Chiefs will be kicking dial on the inner out after the motion you're absolutely right Craig tries the fourth system into the crowd he's very lucky he got this one back good play on top by gun Jones if he doesn't go for the hit might be able to pick it off so Kansas City 3 and out and that means that Brian Barker will be kicking malarial is the snapper and Patrick Robinson is the return man for Cincinnati pretty good kick and it turns over [Applause] now this is something that we see so many times and it is really a mistake on the player because they simply should just stay away in at no offense absolutely foolish yes he had no reason whatsoever ball pushes him in the back completely away from the play you're absolutely this is the sort of middle air we mentioned a Cincinnati one of the youngest teams if not the youngest team in the National Football League when you get out there the young people want to make an impact they want to be a part of things but you have to have the intelligence to realize that this what you're doing here has no impact whatsoever on the play except now and a negative sense to move it back to you and what quarterback David Klinger of Cincinnati to lose he said walk in the back number 42 on the return team on the run back half the distance to the goal first Allen that's on Eric ball he said eventually eventually [Applause] the officials will take your timeout will step aside Cincinnati has the lead three another costly mistakes of Cincinnati starts now [Applause] [Music] now when we talk with Dave Shula the head coach the big yesterday he said we are going to run we are my Tracy but he wasn't kidding there's a funny thing here is that you come into this game and you see okay Cincinnati 27th of May against the rush they're not going to be very effective because Kansas City is the best defense against the rush that's exactly what's happened here in the first quarter the offensive line is creating some holes and the change will come out for the measurement and Harold Greene is already picked up 25 yards rushing and we have just over four minutes left to go in the first quarter cincinnati out in front courtesy of the Doug belfry 23 yard field goal and they lead three to nothing and Shula said we're going back to the basics and they certainly are 25 yards already for healthy [Applause] 50 Scotland [Applause] pickins and of course what running all the time does this damage is a running game and it opens up the passing David absolutely there's star player Carl Pickens he's the man they feel eventual is going to be a propyl and that's exactly there it is play-action pass it sucks the linebackers up look at the gap underneath no linebackers between Rembert and clinger easy completion easy first down George brought the ball of this gemstone and a 34 yard line thus far in the ballgame the Kansas City Chiefs are offensively sweet and now [Applause] recovered and that's here is Derek Fenner off of the left side and he's going to pick up three yards on the play may be full one of the things that Cincinnati says they wanted to capitalize on is the fact that Neil Smith and Derek Thompson both great pass rushers are not that involved with the running game defensively yeah but dance Ali abullah Joe Phillips are hence the reason why they're only giving up 48 yards a game but thus far you got to give a lot of credit to the interior of the Cincinnati Bank [Applause] [Music] the plates a big first down and it is Jeff Glor once again as you mentioned Charlie the play-action faith in this time to misdirection the bootleg watch he gets everybody moving to the left thinking that it's a run he rolls out to the right here comes Corey across the middle just completely unencumbered great job a play calling in the part of Mike Pope to mix up the passes now in this series a gain of 24 yards on the play to the Kansas City 37 yard line are you are you surprised by their effectiveness yes I am stunned look at this [Applause] the three four kids [Applause] he's tricky actually hooked up with three defenders there I think you doing ah no no I think he was trying to throw the way and he trusted Korey to be able to say look if he doesn't catch the ball the other guy's not going to intercept it that's exactly what happened Carol scooped up no look at thickets good athletic play he steps back he throws enough look at how close Korey comes to getting this because if he runs with a ball right there Charlie it's a 15-yard loss Luis is lucky there he stripped the gun away right at the last minute look at this he's got it that's a catch right there Luis strips to ride off otherwise it's a touchdown for the bangle it's second down into [Applause] goes to the 25-yard line on jacket and 10 he has 12 and a purse down the point there if you get past those interior two people Joe Philips had penetration up the field but he misses green in the backfield and as soon as he misses green take a look watch 75 bust through a guard he missed there he goes misses the tackle great downfield blocking on the part of both the receivers and the tackles enabling Green to go all the way down to the 25 for the first [Applause] four seconds accounting time remaining [Music] Kansas City has done absolutely not [Applause] down and now let's take a look at the natural gas quarterback efficiency ratings and Joe Montana that does not surprise anybody not at all a little bit deceiving though as we mentioned only three games thus far with that efficiency rating I'm sure that they wouldn't mind his efficiency rating dropping a little if he would participate in a few more kids boomer esiason and look at John Elway that way having by far I think the Happy Camp yes here [Applause] green on the right side and Harrell continues to be the workhorse we've got a penalty flag dropped on the play so that will stop the clock with 57 seconds that is the time remaining in a very surprising first quarter the penalty against the Cincinnati Bing interesting point yesterday in talking with Marty Schottenheimer despite the bad average of Harold Greene Marty told us this guy can play so don't be deceived by the numbers right now we're considering go formation on the offense number 66 was on the end of the line five-yard penalty to further that point Schottenheimer was mentioning the fact that Greene is a player don't be deceived by the fact that he's averaging less than two yards a carry near to eat at least with the first quarter he's turned as me freshman so the ball just outside the 31-yard line of Ganges it is [Applause] and 16 and we have jumping in contact by the neo Smith now wait a minute that's the tight end so the tight end actually can move a little bit will be interesting to see what they decide okay they're going to collar it against Cincinnati now see that that's his point laser number 82 honey offense bribery the snap five-yard penalty fill second down all right does he go tourists Neil Smith I watch to the right ear screen there's number 82 watch what he does okay he flexes a little bit but he's at the end of the line he can actually do that he can move sideways he didn't cross the line of scrimmage today so today [Applause] second down in 21 clinger good protection fires down the middle a great reset what was inside of four defenders quarry pulls it down and Klinger nailed it I tell you he did I was about to say not just a great reception but a great throw for the young back his confidence has to be at a higher oh yeah yes and we have come to the end of a surprising first quarter Cincinnati lays it straight another 36 yard the Chiefs only through it is it too early to say on any given Sunday this is a given day home far too cliche is still too early that it is surprising [Music] third down and one surprised the heck out here's the first down Fenner goes over the tap that he loses the ball look at their scrambling boy hold on Joe Fenner will pick up the first down I tell you the big surprise here Charlie - despite the running we keep talking about is the way that the offensive line for the bangles are moving these Chiefs off very surprising to create the holes here third one jammed in there Fenner just pounds in there for nearly three yards and they're doing it against an outstanding run defense in Kansas in it the offensive line for the Cincinnati Bengals thus far has really been you've been credit here the horse [Applause] again straight ahead and he's going to pick up a couple of more yards and see where they spot the ball take a look at upfront watch the white white shirts and look where the red shirts end up they're moving backwards look at that it's just it's nothing fancy it's just that they're moving the red shirts backwards and that's a big surprise as you mentioned a lot of foam mowers on that defense big tough guys guys and reputations but again Cincinnati surprising everything [Applause] just inside [Music] and here is green this time he's going to lean to the Shevin maybe in 2007 David what floor was there for Kansas City bad cut there by Green he had it back to the middle of the field it looked like he could have gone the distance and now he's a little shaken up I have to come out here on third down they go - ride it at the Shemin and it is third down once again a reminder that it's all well and good to pile up all this yardage but has been it has been happening throughout the National Football League it seems to be between the 20s they have to get at the end zone and Cincinnati takes the timeout will be back at them over Harold Greene has already rushed for 43 yards now after this ball game stay with us don't rush away second half of the doubleheader on NBC the Jets and the Raiders for San Diego at Pittsburgh [Music] and the crowd has been taken out of the ballgame by Cincinnati Finnick everybody says they want to do it well the bingo certainly have done it and this is a very vocal crowd but not at this point now there [Applause] [Music] Klinger timing pattern in the corner to the spot [Applause] [Music] great time in Pickens did not come down with both feet inbounds swing or last dirty keep not real happy about it he says they were pushed out well we'll take a look at the replay watch the feet are both feet in no neither one whoa that's close Fisher's right there that is close so near the left foot is primarily on the chalk so you're absolutely right shot a good call by the official around 15 field goal attempt of 25 belfry is hit and he is now two for two in the ballgame and sits and he moves on top of Kansas City six to nothing mysterious masked man is Fred Jones he is the return man for Kansas Citian that mask that he is wearing is to protect a broken nose that he suffered earlier in the season and when it happened he didn't realize his broke until he blew his nose that his it's the face entire face swelled up and one of his eyes closed and they were really concerned about it but he has his mask to protect it he's back in there [Music] be sure to stay with us tonight here on NBC as we have as always an outstanding lineup for you eyewitness video Seaquest who has really been a great hit and David Wolper presents the flood you know David wall for the producer routes north and south and Thorn Birds the NBC world premiere movie of the flood and let me tell you David's a friend of mine and if he does it it's worth watching my name's Anthony Weber he's the guy [Music] 20 yard line trying to get something going they haven't done anything so far [Applause] [Music] at the first down marker Darryl Williams chasing time of possession thus far for Cincinnati almost 14 minutes 1357 for Kansas City a minute Tim now that's what happens three it out here's the man signaling in the place [Applause] interesting and talking to the players about the reaction to having Joe Montana seem to kind of like the fact that he distracts takes away all the attention from them and he brings another plus the 30-yard line what might that must be I'll tell you in a moment the plus is television when we talked to Neil Smith he said I like Joe Montana he brings national television to us and we get a show of our defense called by Marty Schottenheimer regarding Dave Craig better offensive team right now with Dave correctly reward 92 and as you pointed out they did win 10 games with him last year so with Joe Montana down certainly they're not concerned over the fact that they have somebody inexperienced for somebody that's been the job people forget Dave Craig three Pro Bowl appearances second down and nine [Music] and Craig hands off to Harvey Wayans he slips as he makes his cannoli maybe a yard on the play and that's about it now for Dave Craig this is his third offense in the last three years it's interesting he had the Seattle office he had the offense here last year this entirely drove it in a way similar to the Seattle office when I ask you about how familiar is he with this offense with everybody says this is Joe's offense and he reads so well and that he said in a high seventy so say seventy-eight percent of the offense and that is a confidence level also but it is and people forget that if you're another physician you can just learn your position who the quarterback you have to know what everybody's doing it off about that much more different third down and eight my shot is complete [Applause] as the first down first time that we've seen Marcus with a football this afternoon Tim Crum Roy makes the tack well as you know Charla there aren't too many things I'm expert at but there's one thing I know and I've seen this guy do this time and time again make a good catch out of the backfield little punk move to the last 33 years of age you can still catch it still get that first down and the numbers prove that more than likely before his career is over you'll be the second back to catch over 500 miles along with Roger great football player Super Bowl MVP League MVP 285 rushing leader in 85 is not a whole lot he has offenders and it is a first down to the left side [Applause] across the 45 around the 46 baby the 47 yard line Darrell Williams moves up and makes the stop Kimball Anders a free agent from Houston fact he was a teammate of David clink lers there at the University one of those guys struggled to make the claw but now that he's made the club he's really made a major contribution not just as a lead blocker but promoter Shawn ever told us it's also a faulty runner we've seen it now on two occasions in case you just joined us Cincinnati honor front of Kansas by a score of six to nothing duck belfry with two field goals of 23 and 25 the speedster all-timer Arkansas that's about 45 miles from Little Rock receiver itself he said when we asked about the size of his high school we'll take another look at the play he said was I was in high school there's about 1500 now there's only about a thousand how many on the football team not enough to scrimp that'll give you an idea that's such a great story though that the kids from all over the country in small towns can play go and play in college and and if they're talented enough and pay the price enough and they really wanted enough that they can make a career [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Marcus didn't get it that's a big break for the Cincinnati Bengals Ron Lind the defensive coordinator told us yesterday that he was going to come us of safety blitzes and try to confuse things much the way Dennis Smith was able to do earlier on the Monday night game and Marcus isn't happy with himself and rightly so he was all by himself to recover that fumble and he didn't get it watch the Blitz cover from the side there's Darryl Williams the free safety great blitz and watch what he does here he bats the ball away gets away from Craig but Marcus is all alone Oz who's fallen and he can't get it he can't get it they come wheeler and Williams Craig doesn't see if the ball bounces loose does a good job batting the ball away now look there's nobody there just fall on it but he can't [Applause] the Kansas City 28 yard line play-action fake into the end zone [Applause] [Music] the smile you see on Carter's because hey partner on with things we were teammates at tennis city both first round face two years ago Carter not fooled by the play-action fake it all stride for stride with Pickens thinkest tries to go up and take it at its apex but Carter's right there to bat it away that's rich and a pretty good throw in that situation with that kind of tight coverage because victims can go high that vertical leap and pull it down absolutely between 62 and 63 Tennessee teeth and it is jeca down [Applause] [Music] [Applause] back in the davargan and rightly so at this point after the big turnover if the Kansas City Chiefs can force a field goal that would be a major victory Neal Smith with a wingspan of over seven feet that's a tough guy to throw over if there's a high wind gonna take off down the bingos have converted sway of sixer down opportunities [Applause] sidearm bass on the right side - Greg Thompson the backup Titan and Klinger is NATO - yeah he's taking quite a beating today barely got that away once again Neil Smith right in his face watch the left ear screen number nine he comes underneath there's no help gets hammered how is a good catch by Thompson you see there said well big deal they didn't get the first down that extra six yards is gonna help Hillary 43 is much better than taking the shot put more in on the safety blitz knocking Cleveland 40 to 43 yards much better percentage of the fifth and it is up and it is good so Doug belfry who had been struggling as the kicker is now three for three and the bingos lead at nine another the egg dealers we are driving excitement by Siraj the document company see your documents differently you see your business differently by Hagar wrinkle-free cotton pants 100% cotton 0% wrinkles and by Budweiser fresh pure natural proud to be your by here in Kansas City Cincinnati out in front of the Chiefs by a score of - nothing Fred Jones is the return man for Kansas City and Lee Johnson kicks out [Music] before Eric ball finally runs him out of bounds and for update let's go to New York City Thank You charlie earlier we told you about Charles Barkley's collapsed at last night's Phoenix Suns practice here's the update Berkeley was looked at in Flagstaff where it was determined that he should have x-rays and an MRI in Phoenix so he'll make the short trip to Phoenix undergo those tests today however Barclays feeling much better and it's quite possible he'll be back on the court tomorrow NBA stars falling left and right charlie but we talked to Marv and he said yes about his availability Marv being available he's been available over 35 years and that's just to do your hair [Applause] good defensive way by Darrell jay-j burned the intended receiver he came over to break it up and it's going to be second down back of the Kansas City turns out this is gonna throw as you can get right here by Craig look at he puts it right on the hands but Darryl Williams anticipating your eyes at the same time as the ball as you mentioned great defensive play so spotted again at the Kansas City 37 yard line he's not a happy camper today Darryl Williams endorsed a graduate of Miami I didn't like what the results of yesterday's game against the Seminoles slide four or five yards so yesterday the Seminoles chopped down the king Atlanta Braves chop-chop has been at work at the Wales much of the chap here today well I nothing when you're down he's not like a chop about you an iron shop do you feel silly doing it yes this is a visual medium after all we are jump knotting area third down and four and crackers rock [Applause] [Music] [Applause] what are you [Applause] while you live with the Blitz and you die with the Blitz Cincinnati Bengals watch in the middle they come with the number of people the inside backer would normally have Anderson coverage is nowhere to be found absolutely nowhere in Anders does a good job running with the ball cutting back to the middle avoiding some tacklers 28 yard game first down first big offensive play from against some - Aniki blocked by wide receiver Willie Davis when he made his trek back to the inch at at the Cincinnati 30th first down for Kansas City Bengals on top by a score of mind [Music] [Applause] [Music] interesting point here the one back offense who seemed Kimba Landers be featured the spar and of course you know the running backs usually to think up here of course are Harvey Williamson first-round pick number 44 and of course Marcus Allen but the spark Kimball and ER seems to be the offensive stuff it'll be check it down into the ball of the 22 yard line six and a half minutes that is the time remaining in a very fast-moving first hand the Cincinnati Bengals with three field goals by Doug belfry of 23 25 and 42 yard [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] one of those likable guys the National Football League Jonathan a 655 248 pounds he is known for his blog you could hear the misdirection they just leave him alone he cuts across makes the catch he has a group called A's as huddle which is designed to help those people with diabetes that man right there since 5:00 250 in the National for Koli and he's a diabetic [Music] antennas still bothered by the answer [Music] Marcus out Marcus has 100 touchdowns in his career he got his 100th get his 100th last week against the Los Angeles Raiders I'm sure that that had to be sweet and it was in this into the field he's coming out now so he's not gonna get it on this 101 just like nothing not unless we have a scoop I really feel you know and you have to figure that he would be challenging the top people been relegated to this subservient role that he was there with the Raiders of the last couple of years [Music] [Applause] Kansas City [Music] 4:49 left to go in the first half a chance to pull within two of Cincinnati and Nick Lowery will attempt the point at [Music] without the ball [Applause] and it will go against Kansas City ball start on the offense number 61 the center by the iron penalty how can the have a fall star when he's trying to snap the ball it can happen a lot what he does he flexes his hands on the ball and everybody goes or a lot of cases since I snapped for puns I can tell you this you flex your buttocks a little bit all officials so this will be from the 15 extra point attempt and that makes the score Cincinnati 9 in city seven Joe Montana of all people Charlie said that Dave Craig is a better touch passer than he is whether or not that's true we see right there they've got seven points since 299 Kansas City seven 449 time remaining first [Music] outside the 30 good return close to the 34 yard line and will step aside we'll be right back to era instead break to the hardest part of the Kansas City office was getting the play from the sidelines well hearing obviously you got the right one because the zone defenses that have been so effective inside the 24 other teams the National Football League in this play are not is not for Cincinnati Barnett gets behind Lance gun for the six coming right at you we mentioned the touch pass of Dave Craig this really is a nice touch right here right to the back of the end zone unable to get both feet down easily Cincinnati leads by two and they have a first down 34 yard line cleaner for the shoulder pads and break Thompson it's incomplete Rick Thompson is a past catching tied in in fact earlier before McGee had his big game against the Seattle Seahawks he was the one that came in on third down so he had a lot of room to run you know it was behind him a little bit he should have Cana [Music] [Applause] - all right Charlie armchair critics have been saying less Mark Ingram or Tony Martin for the Dolphins but now Ingram gets his say as he takes that 13 yard touchdown pass from Dan Marino second quarter in Cleveland Dolphins go on top of the Browns 10-7 back to charlie and Todd [Applause] [Music] [Applause] is one of the chief defenders really got a running excited now look like the right tackle flack likes then he took on with him and it will go against Cincinnati as you know from tackle to tackle once you go to your three or four all I'm saying I can't move on the tackle right tackle number 66 prior to the snap five-yard penalty and we will mention the crowd noise because the crowd noise here is very loud for an open stadium and if there's any kind of a change of the offensive line or being able just hear the snap count the fact that Dan Jones is a working free with protection to play those nice bass and it is thinkable there was another outstanding defensive labor laws well he does get his hand in there but I think Pickens would tell you that that was a catchable ball and you can see the frustration on the part of Sheila's face coming right at you to the right of your screen Josh Lewis will get his hand in but the ball gets into his chest good play by Lewis [Applause] manly Johnson will be kicking for since Annette Carter had a terrific return last time the cough oh great kid it's a satellite nine yard light on the return Stefan [Applause] [Music] and get some of it back 61 yards on the kick by Leigh Johnson Alex Gordon with the tackle for the Cincinnati Bengals and next Saturday NBC Sports will present the Breeders Cup preview the final prep for horse racing's championship day in a great field of horses competing in the last tune-up and famed Belmont Park that's the Breeders Cup preview next Saturday at 4:30 Eastern Time Kansas City at their own 19 yard line trailing in the ballgame by a score of 9 to 7 and the clock will continue to move inferred Williams with the tackle Marty Schottenheimer not afraid to use his reserves as we mention you know the featured players who Williams and Allen but now but he talks he doesn't have much play time comes in with a big catch for the Chiefs and Harvey Williams and Kimball Anders will come in to that offensive set 247 and Counting time remaining this is in the second quarter his bleep scared the ball yet [Applause] a little bit of a toe injury that maybe McDonald and gun on the tackle for Cincinnati well I can tell you from personal experience having toe problems it's no fun to play on the astroturf that's something that really through the grabs can be lingering in fact I remember one year Calvin Hill in this the entire season with turf toe [Music] just got it [Music] [Applause] would have been the intended receiver we have the two-minute warning at 156 we'll be back Craig's not very happy about it either third and one why not run the ball and the clock stops at the two-minute warning anyway you can see the frustration on Craig's face what the heck were we throwing that ball downfield on third one and now we haven't and so Kansas City now with 156 left to go in the first half facing a fourth and one back at the offensive coordinator for Kansas City and should be second-guessing himself as well evidently not realizing that they have the two-minute warning then the clock would have stopped anyway and so Brian Barker will be kicking to Patrick Robinson the rookie from Tennessee State to return man for Cincinnati I did good about end over in taken on the ride stop in a reverse it returns near midfield the old Carter makes the tackle we should have stay with us and halftime we have an outstanding interview for you of course we have the usual on Domino pizzas NFL live halftime report and that's all the scores and highlights but OJ Simpson sits down and has a football visit with Boomer Esiason it's really interesting a Boomer is having an outstanding year with the New York Jets replica so stay with us for that interview the Domino beats the end of a live halftime report the reports of the demise of his left arm were yes [Applause] pick up a couple of yards on the Scramble right up the middle to 50-yard line it will be second down in it and we have a minute and a half left in the first half Derrick Thomas was there for Kansas City you have a tendency in this situation to look for number 80 Karl Pickens of Cincinnati's [Music] [Applause] [Music] with the short bastard grey-thompson the stake on the part of the young tight end does not get out of a Taliban was taking about a bounce anyway and I know he wants to get that extra yardage but yourself a chance to come back here and not have to use some time out now they're in a hurry and you don't want to be in a hurry on third down you want to get back on the huddle regroup [Applause] [Music] his bass is there and it will be the first down it is Scott by Thompson and it's at the 40-yard line and Cincinnati will take a timeout to stop the clock with 38 seconds left to go in the first half and Cincinnati on in front by a score of 9 to 7 duck belfry with three field goals at 23 25 and 42 yards and after that his third one you're watching along a sideline Morrow Whaler commercial he was like a politician running for office he was shaking hands and high-fives and congratulations from everybody as he was working the bench and certainly enjoying it and justifiably so because he has had kind of a spot a year up to this point and it's really neat for the young manda to come out hit three for three and he feels good about it the reason they hired him and her kept him rather over Jim preach was they felt that he had a little bit better lay so depending upon what the offense does here in the series they might have to test that because belfry supposedly had better range than Jim reach but there are a lot of people calling for the fans breathe breathe [Applause] lucky from Kentucky mistake [Applause] and they go back to the running attack in a Derrick dinner not a bad call thirty seconds of running you might not think so but that gives me at five yards here and also gives the defense something to think about now at the 35 yard line in check [Music] [Applause] that will stop the clock thinner the vol carrier Neal Smith may have been offside I think it was Derek Thomas whistle there and that's a big mistake because that five yards now put some right in field goal range Kansas to the offsides Derek Thomas has been frustrated because they've been double teaming your every play the left tackle Derek Fenner has come over practically every playoff side on the defense number 58 so trying to get that extra edge he's frustrated he moves just a little bit too quick and now now at the 30 yard line there within palfreys range timeouts remaining the Chiefs have three and Simpson adding one and now the Vaughn of the 30-yard line in a first down [Applause] fifteen seconds left let's the strength of david claimer he did not go all the way down he was throwing them all away saving the yardage that great was that was impressive yes was very impressive Martin Bayliss and Albert Lewis were both coming on the rest Louis is completely untouched look at that hits him right in the back there's Bayless and he gets the ball off now it was close to his knee being down but either way that was a great athletic play it superior toughness [Applause] first down just trying to pick up another yard or two thinner gets the car and Cincinnati will take the time out and they take it with five seconds left not normally they like to take it with four seconds left because sometimes with five or six time does not expire on the field goal attempt and then you have to kick off but he sprinted right to the official once again because a young quarterback he knew there's 11 seconds I he has no idea so soon as the plane was that he ran over there he's not he's not the sappy better nobody wants to get it off before but we had this earlier this year remember when they took it we had a team that took like with seven or eight seconds left there's still one play yeah and after that California Stanford game you never know never know what's going to happen that's true so now Doug belfry will have a chance to go 4 for 4 in the first half and the surprising cincinnati bengals leading Kansas City and have 46 Young's are here that's gonna be a tough kick but that would you know being up by 5 at that's big make a kid momentum heading into the second [Music] [Applause] from 47 yards away and guess what one second left we have a flag on the back of the plane there's a flag on the play they're definitely not going to take those points out four goes off the board but there is still one second left and so that means if Cincinnati will kick off the Kansas City interestingly enough last week against the Raiders that's exactly Party Schottenheimer did is that they got a penalty on a field goal you know the so called book tells you not to take points off right but that's exactly what Marty did they went in for the touchdown so in this case though this many yards are what hate him if only one sec now they're a little bit closer yeah don't be Fellini to figure out that they're gonna take that field goal nice snap here's the kick coming from the side that's Darryl Carter's foot lands and that's that's pretty ticklish ticky tack but fortunately it's inconsequential and so the 47-yard field goal comes with one second left in the first half and Cincinnati now has moved out in front by a score of 12 to 7 at a very quiet crowd yes and be sure to stay with us at halftime for all of the highlights and scores from around the National Football League and of course OJ's interview with Boomer Esiason it is very quiet interesting thought here one second left nothing's gonna happen right once I said exactly good cheer how did you know that exactly what I was thinking cuz you're in a weird mood today and you come up with something like no but I mean think about that how many times do you get in a game condition the chance to practice an onside kick mister be ideal onside kick no actually that's just a script kick it's falling on clock start soon as the ball is touched by I'll reach the member of the return team [Applause] officially at his halftime [Applause] and at the half Cincinnati out in front of Kansas City by a score of 12 to 7 and we'll be right back after these messages from your local station with the kickoff by Leigh Johnson Fred Jones will at the ball go through the end zone Kansas City will bring it out to the 20-yard line where the Chiefs will go to work but now let's check in with the Coors Light halftime statistics I think it stands out here clearly is that two to one in three major categories first downs total yards and possession events the very reason right now the bangles are up by five points Cincinnati 12 Kansas City seven and the Chiefs will move on offense from their own 20-yard line first down [Music] Joe Montana is listed as the third of the quarterback for Kansas City still bothered by the hamstring not expected to play red comes out during this passes rates in the history of the Dallas Texans and them Kansas City Chiefs this was linebacker Cheryl Hendrick and he was inducted into the Kansas City Hall of Fame 1962 1967 and his teammates were here and as you see he was in a wheelchair but with a little bit of assistance he walked out to the middle of the field and then when it came time for everybody to leave all of his teammates picked him up on his shoulder and they carried him out it'll be second down and 10 for Kansas City the island by Willie Davis and that's a great catch leaning back and low with defenders all over it it's going to be shy of the first down that is a good reception just a hook wrap to the outside you're right the ball is thrown low actually pretty good coverage there by brim with the balls where he couldn't get to it and Davis who Marty Schottenheimer calls a self-made receiver said he had two assets speed intelligence get to teach himself to catch the ball you see by the numbers there he's been the focal point of the offense third down and one [Music] [Applause] and it's Marcus Allen who picks it up [Applause] nice visit with Marcus yesterday of course you all are very close friend I notice the difference I mean he was laughing and kidding and joking and you were kind of knifing each other and a lot more fun just to visit with that he has been the last two or three years clearly animated over the last couple of years he wasn't very happy in Los Angeles and in fact that that's what he verbalize to us which was simply I didn't enjoy going to work these days couple years now I do they have clutched up to their collective breasts here in Kansas City and into the first down at the 34 yard line comes in motion [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] look at the end of that play where there was no flag should not have been apply but with Joe Montana same situation there was a flood a week ago but this is the very place of what you were talking to me about good arguing about this all week good reason to bring them well that was clearly out of bounds people Benham up and took it out of bounds take a look at where the initial contact is made that's in bounce he's trying to strip the ball but it ends up about five six yards out of bounds you contrast that with the situation last week it was a similar situation but joe Montana's Joe Montana trying to protect them second down and nine and Marcus Allen is they'll get a couple of yards Tim crumb right now let's go back to the Joe Montana play last week here's what happened last week watch it roll to the right and Aaron Wallace is right in your picture now watching the initial contact has made it still in bounds but the momentum of am outside he trips over his own man right there that still in bounds he trips over his old man bumps Montana insured it's out of bounds but there was nothing malicious about it that got the flag and that got the hamstring I must say this is extra protection necessarily for Montana when you have 76,000 people booing like crazy that certainly has to influence the officials has to look like you think it was extra protection for hunting mr. down in line you know what Lance Gunn is telling mic dial he's saying you didn't want any of that anyway you didn't want any that cuz you do you're gonna get hit he's trying to psych him out right there but this is a terrific throw by Craig right the middle of the field right in the hands you got to catch that kind of catching because then you get the reputation if you can't catch the ball in the middle of the field you say hey you know you're not a tough guy is he wearing tackle buddy go I'll be catching Steve Largent 819 catches with a hot here is the kick by Barker [Music] cuts back slips the tackle makes a couple of nice boots there's three or four yards on the return 44 yards of the kick a four yard return we've got a timeout and Cincinnati as the lead Carter authentic apparel and headwear of the NFL by Coors Light aged ice-cold for that fewer taste of the Rockies swings for the Silver Bullet the right beer now by McDonald's what you want is what you get at McDonald's today and by Mitsubishi the new thinking in automobiles [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] the ball still in the neighborhood of the 23 yard line determined to run here you can see they have the two tight end set both McGee and Thompson are in the game and now with greenback this is what they want to do they want to get him the ball they want to take some time off the clock and as you saw the 10 minute ticker that Dan Marino is out of the ballgame [Music] [Applause] [Music] well seven flags and whistles and a long play-action fake fake paper and an interesting conversation between cleaner and right now what player is doing is that he's trying to assert a little independence there he's not gonna take that guff even though he's a young quarterback watch the end of the play Smith just knocks the ball away from Cleveland says hey what are you doing that for you heard the whistle so denied no only part of that he said I don't talk trash to me either I don't care how many times you've been to the Pro Bowl but the ban on his club said knock it off [Applause] very assertive on the part of the [Applause] fires this one it is shot Charl Dickens and they'll mark it at the 27 yard line every time the crowd of the Kansas City Chiefs starts to get back in the ball game Cincinnati just quiet sit down much to the right of your screen watch Derek Thomas left tackle and [Music] [Applause] and Cincinnati will be good and that will assuage the frustration of Derrick Thomas there finally he got singled coverage but they threw the quick ball out to the running back who was supposed to block him and Thomas comes completely across the field to make the play there it is the inside move only one gone and look at the speed coming clear across the field to make the play on Feder that's something you can't teach and so Lee Johnson will be kicking Judeo Carter [Applause] a couple of bouncers picked up by [Music] [Applause] standing job and the special teams that Kansas City Chiefs at the Balkan bounce come up and he'd have enough room to get it to nearly midfield great special teams in the part of the Kansas City Chiefs shot timer and his coaching tenure has never had a losing season but you can see there he has a better be successful against the AFC Central teams of the last couple years last time they won was 1990 against the Cleveland Browns with whatever reason certainly today right now 12:7 Cincinnati Island [Music] [Applause] [Music] by Alfred William now you see right there when he looked at he went like this to wave his hands no no no that's because when you have that misdirection to make 94 is unblocked you can see he's supposed to buy into the play fake but he does not buy it at all he goes straight for Craig and gets the sack and when he gets up and goes no huh no no not gonna fool me the way I was waiting of that so it's a loss of a neat on the shack and we'll be checking down at 18 [Music] and correct the throw [Applause] we talked with offensive coordinator Ron he told us that they have two guys that have to make plays James Francis number 50 is one and Alfred Williams their outside backers the other here he comes from the right of the screen coming over the right tackle with the arm underneath he makes it by Tom rickets who is playing in place the injured rich Ricky Ziegler in fact Derek grant was one of us he was originally slated to be there attack and one thing about the Kansas City Chiefs they have a mix-and-match offensive line down and players that are playing out of position and they've been struggling with it today [Music] and he throws down [Applause] here's an interesting point there though the flag comes from the guy in front of the receiver as opposed to from behind who is the guy that would have to vanish boy I think that came from both ways today the truth I only see one flag once again then we come back to the mental mistakes on the part of the young team and the reason I say that is this but it was fast interference no but my point is this Charlie here you've got it what third and twenty third and 19 even if the guy makes the catch it's going to be fourth down you've got to be conscious so I don't know what Mike broom is complaining about they called on Darryl Williams this is what's called a waggle they put everybody to the right so he can have more time he buys time rolling to the right he throws the ball back coming over the top that's my grim adrenaline dialed it up not number 31 but again see look where he is he's at about the 44 yard line so even if brim does not make the play he makes the catches for them as choice the part of catch a knock it down think of two automatic first down the boarding [Applause] Ricardo McDonald makes the tackle Alex Gordon thought that he ant if it he slipped out of his grass so it's going to be seconded about a yard to go over the first down costly penalty for the Cincinnati Bengals because now the momentum shifts to Kansas City they go through a verse after the penalty good call on the part of Paul Hackett to shake things up and try to get something big to happen and he almost busted a victim [Music] check it down and one [Music] [Applause] [Music] she'd ask you something China regards to Marcus you felt that at age 33 you think he could still carry the ball 20 times the game is still be the featured bag yep even though Marty Schottenheimer told us that he had took into account his age and also took into the captain over the last two seasons he didn't have the wear and tear on his body yep you're saying you disagree with Martin yeah I think you could be a feature first down back I think you can feature anything on 18 to 20 times a game in this offense in this offense it's not going to be a situation where he's going to carry the ball 30 times a game like the old Kansas City off no but if they run the 49ers offense look when they had run like a Roger Gregg in the nature [Applause] [Music] [Applause] eighteen yards on the play and now the crowd into the bar game here at Arras video I mentioned earlier Kimble Anders showing his wares similar situation earlier the game will he had a 28-yard kids it looks almost identical cuts back to the middle after catching the little Flyers control makes the big yardage and makes the Cincinnati Bengals pay for that blitz you're right Dave that was a first down first down and goal to go the ball just inside the 10-yard line [Music] [Applause] [Music] Johnny touchdown number one [Applause] [Applause] I am with Frank for eighth place [Applause] there's a jump over we have that lift it will show that to you interesting point that just as you say he's good enough to be the future back in busted [Music] and for the first time of the ballgame Kansas City as the here's something you want to see something you can't teach watch the move at the three yard line right here touchdown shoes [Applause] crimson up this touchdown from Marcus Allen you recall third and 20 they had a situation where if he just makes the catch they could stuff him and there it is but Marcus Allen instead has his fellow good first touchdown as a result of mistake by this insane and now Nick Larry will be kicking off to either [Music] [Applause] and it is taking the 12-yard and the 35 in dumped at the 36 yard line the mistake by Mike Graham and then the Kansas City now we've got some pushing and shoving a little extracurricular activity going on it's broken up very quickly but the mistake by brim set up in Kansas City though immediately capitalized great job on the part of the offensive line but watch the three yard line the little subtle move Marcus Allen puts on Mike Grimm he thinks he's going right now listen watch the plant cow cuts back against the grain and goes in standing hold that graphic let's come back to that after this place so we can really [Applause] [Music] this was spotted at the 35-yard line and Harold green is going to pick up about seven yards on the play and now we'll go back to the touchdown now notice Jim Brown Walter Payton John Riggs 116 we were talking on the plane Riggins John Ricca you were talking of the plane a couple of days ago and that if you know Marcus had the three years with the Raiders but he said we didn't play that much and if you play these averaging around this 11 touched having touchdowns the game he took 11 touchdowns a season he comes down to see if you conceivably be in the top three to that every single person on this list is either a hall-of-famer or a certain hall-of-famer he's got the first down and now for an update let's go to New York City gentlemen all right Charlie we told you about the injury to Dan Marino it took place on this play in the first half against Cleveland apparently a non-contact injury before he was hit and now we have the final determination it is indeed a torn right Achilles Dan Marino has been told by doctors but after 145 consecutive non strike starts with the Dolphins he's through for the year Scott Mitchell is the new QB back to Charlie inside [Music] [Applause] 10:45 starts as amazing [Music] [Applause] Dinka blue drow Pickens the intended receiver and David Whitmore and the coverage for Kansas City I am I am stunned well I'm shut about Dan Marino so is the organization yeah here's a classic case of the ball being catchable watch Whitmore run into Pickens here before the ball arrives right there he knocks him down to the balls nowhere nowhere close and so as a result there is no interference and if it hadn't been a casual ball that it would have been check it down into that of Barry Sanders with versus more important [Applause] how that to sit down and go through what John Elway John Elway right okay immediately comes to mind I mean when you it's almost as if 145 consecutive starts you know the guy that second is somewhere in the 60s in terms of quarterbacks it's almost as if you just assume that this guy was you know he was a doctor yeah [Music] third down and nine [Music] [Applause] [Music] fanni over go and he was simply running out of time [Music] and it will be fourth down the attendance here today seventy five thousand three hundred and ninety four seven five three nine four at Aaron Stadium so Lee Johnson will be kicking the returned man is now JJ Burton for James [Applause] because the two times the eternity a Texan desert exceptionally of course not humble [Music] Oh step aside with Kansas City leading by two 14 to 12 now trailing but they have had bigger opportunities but they've only been able to convert for field goals they have yet to score a touchdown yeah if you figure in scoring opportunities they're ahead four to two but on the scoreboard is 14 to 12 and again that's the bane of a national football league right now is the inability to get it in the end zone once you're in and I say this because you said it first the green zone not the red zone because the green zone is money danza city will start now from their own 16 yard line the first down [Music] that is the time remaining [Music] [Applause] [Music] they pick up the first down in route he had an outstanding afternoon Billy has free agents in Houston Ricardo McDonald and Darryl Williams we're there for Cincinnati here's another Lord Alfred Williams cuts upfield the pass rush mode and that creates the big gap for Anders to take advantage of and the runs support by the secondary of Cincinnati's a little too late to prevent the person well Russia's 25 yards not a bad average for carry and three receptions for 55 yards [Music] [Applause] and Marcus Allen the log and don't forget to stay with us throughout the afternoon as coming up next most of you to see the George Jefferson Los Angeles Raiders from the Coliseum and also several of you to see the San Diego game at Pittsburgh John free starting at quarterback Stan Humphries still bothered by shouldering he's already admitted that that's something he doesn't think is no later was it a couple of times in priests knees before but we saw freeze of course you and I earlier San Diego to a victor pollution or some certification good defensive riot Jones makes the play on Willie Davis early in the season rod Jones took a lot of abuse because it seemed like he was getting burned constantly but today we've called Willie Davis's number once I believe with one catch for about a nine yard hook right there stride for stride before the fastest guys in the National Football League of course you'll remember the rod Jones is the one that colored Bo Jackson from behind on one of his nearly 90 yard runs there in the Coliseum in fact you and I college but forever was there you are you kidding [Music] second down into [Music] [Applause] the corner and we're going to turn the corner ahead to New York for an update prediction charlie and Todd the Dolphins can still win the AFC East if Scott Mitchell is as good as Dan Marino good enough on the first drive of the second half six plays 60 yard drive ends in that 19 yard Mitchell to Tony Martin touchdown pass first TD pass of Scott Mitchell's career Miami leads 1714 back to Kansas City [Music] well if Miami is to go on and win it will be I think more of the coaching of the head man that it will be the car for the quarterback well give the young man credit means you got a company is no damn free okay [Applause] it'll go for a gain of 16 on the blood go it's Gitmo handler you know what I don't understand charlie it's not as if he's running these really creative patterns it's not like he's running a corner or something really clever look at this it's just a flat round but for whatever reason they opted not to cover him people are running downfield Lance Gunn you saw his back turn isn't up the field and now here he's had four catches for nearly 70 yards and all it's been has been in the flat nothing special and he is a very tough runner you get him a little space time for it first down 50-yard line and here is Mark isn't so market second down and nine at the 49 yard line of the Cincinnati Bengals when we talked with Marcus we asked him why did you come to Kansas City he said well do two reasons this is what it was a good deal he said the other was a party shot timer he said he was the most persistent of everybody and he said I came here and I feel very comfortable I enjoy my teammates I love the community and I'm very comfortable here and like you said he said I'm having a lot of fun he did say deal first newsroom [Applause] [Music] how many times we see that happen when they he's argument about how his hands are so small watch here nobody hits him just slips away the arm is going forward and you could argue as the ball came out that's actually a fumble as opposed to an incomplete pass but Anders recovered it anyways no harm no foul a so it marked them all again at the Cincinnati 49 yard line and it is third down and nine [Music] whoa they came with everybody the veritable kitchen the city if crumber I was the man who got to it seven men coming look at all the people - line of scrimmage here we come he gets one man but he spins away right into the arms of crumb ride annual stops forcing the play but crumb ride picking up the garbage and will take the cat down to the end of the third quarter we'll be right back after these messages from your local station Sioux City is kicking and here is Patrick Roberts any exceptions the first catch let's go to New York City for an update Mitchell Charlie Jones keep Jackson playing for the Dolphins all hands on deck as the Dolphins try to recover without Marino and offered all the went down a little while ago but that's Keith Jackson's fourth touchdown of the year from three yards out gives Miami a 24:14 lead Charlie former University of Utah grad from Springville Utah nice fellow [Applause] lotta time remaining [Applause] and after Derek tanner another thing quickly about Mitchell which is interesting Charlie we commented earlier about Klinger in the pocket Mitchell six six and 235 that is a big bonding bill second down and seven a lot of time as you mentioned Cincinnati doesn't have to panic here and then throw down by two we established that running [Applause] Wegener's passes in Tripoli he throws behind Jeff Warren and it's going to be third down in seven and the ball of the 14 yard line so all of a sudden Cincinnati faces one of those offensive crossroads of the bargain third down examining you have a fee that they must convert here because if they kick Kansas City is going to a very good field position not only that they'll have a chance to take a lot of time off of the clock well they certainly open themselves up for second guessing there fairly effectively they're down [Applause] [Music] [Applause] three step drop pass is complete and is going to be a first down he goes to Craig Thompson the number two tight end who picks up the first down at the 23 of the 24 yard line he's the number two tight in but he is their past catcher and this is about the third time on third down he's come with a big catch to deliver the first for over 48 done it like finds a scene with his own settles down against the first and Dave Shula [Applause] at first now [Applause] [Music] you know for a team that's old [Applause] you know in fairness to them too you have to figure the Cincinnati Bengals coming in what do they have to lose Kansas City is the one that everybody's favorite and as you mentioned prohibitive favorite 16 point 18 points coming is a little yeah but there's but there's a reason for that and that is that a tremendous amount of people feel the Kansas City's are much better football team they're Cincinnati but not today I'm so far [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] well saitarn fashion it is completed Eric thinner around the 30-yard line so we'll come out it'll be third down in short Albert Louis making the tackle for Kansas City check of the ten minute if you see the Miami Cleveland store [Music] well out in front of the [Applause] it's a big surprise if [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and the sidearm fast for the first down and again at his Craig Thompson so David Klinger has picked up has picked out his favorite receiver his last name is Thompson you know it's interesting that earlier we're talking about Anders in a simple round watch the right of your screen he just takes about a 3 yard opposite band cover you got her but you gotta have tighter coverage than that on the tight end it's just that that's a gimme that Stutz that's throwing cash I believe it is that Thompson's fourth catch today all right as it is pop the ball [Applause] for the overthrows Tony McGee and will bring that one back to the 36 yard line and his second down at 10 now he's committed to the pass for the next year down and I'm surprised at throwing a first down because again they've been so successful running on first down and running and then throwing for the short one on third down touch pass serious man inframan coverage with the tight in and the linebacker of course you can see parts hitting him well after the ball is gone over top about three yards second down and 10 [Applause] [Music] probably bring it back usually when the flag has dropped it will be holding against the oven so it's going to be a face mask a face mask against Cincinnati well they shifted Derek Thomas over to the left side instead of the right they did not have the double-team and he just blew by Joel alter and once again the toughness of clinger Thomas untouched hits him and the guy stays on his feet runs for the first even though it's not going to count Burnie cuca is the referee waiting upon his car and the official decision by the officials Pakistan with 11:28 left to go penalty from the previous spot that is on Dan Jones is the rookie free agent from Maine matcha Thomas just blow by him he's never seen quite that kind of speed there it is right there he has a face mask at the end Thomas falls off a clinger good call by the official that's that's a handful they shift signs what's your choice pick your poison does not deal snip checking down [Music] [Applause] [Music] right side out to the 41 yard line he's going to pick up about ten yards on the play so be third down and either five or six years to go for the first down and Martin Bayless makes the tackle good call by Mike Pope everybody up there anticipating the pass got a little crease had some people run blocking and now a very makable third five Joe for the third time in the drive cincinnati needs to convert on third down [Music] [Applause] and this time it is Reggie River who against the Seattle Seahawks became mr. third down in that often said he comes the offensive set that he comes into second time in the bargain he's been very effective in this game remember here on the crossing route he lost the receiver he lost the defender that time this time Kevin Ross is with him makes the tackle but not before River stretches out that 65 frame and just the bank is at first though the ball of the Cincinnati 47 [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] for Al Green it'll be second down in town and remember that Doug belfry the field goal kicker for the Cincinnati Bengals who had been struggling the early part of the season is four for four in this ball game including inning for 47 yards away and the margin to boys 14 to 12 Kansas City [Applause] guys to the self-destructed I really complete to trial once again it sets up a very makable thirty short I've impressed with the composure of cleanly this is now what is ninth NFL stars yes if I'm not mistaken pleated fourteen of twenty seventh for a hundred and thirty yards the numbers though don't tell the story of how he gets with the pressure and his [Music] [Applause] and here comes neo spread the question is was he drawn off [Music] [Applause] and that is on Dan Jones a right tackle the beleaguered and Jones I mean if you talk about a bad just believe look at how far he is off the line as it is they can actually call that there is the players that win and you just cannot do it you simply cannot I'm not gonna go so far as the flight say that this is the hardest position to play in the National Football League [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] is Jeff Ward great call by microf the offensive coordinator 24a yeah the flanker screen he cuts entities watched the left of your screen he's going to throw quickly literally run right out to block Thompson gets the block Walter gets a blocking and Corey has some great speed for three five even though he's only 165 pounds big first down for the bangles and once again another huge third down conversion fourth time in the drive [Applause] [Music] [Applause] third down and seven [Applause] about the 23 now it's important here for Cincinnati and I know that this isn't the mindset of a condo setting up an Elizabeth the players cannot think she won't feel the range will okay a lot of times you get that feeling down here instead of saying look let's keep doing with what we've been doing let's see if we get into the end zone there's a natural tendency to relax is now second down [Applause] jumps to the outside he'll lean inside the 24 let's call it brother inside the 20 to the 18 yard line Lonnie Mart's and Kevin Ross make the tackle effective Harold Greene has been today was 65 yards rushing against 57 with the rest of the year now interesting two weeks ago the Cincinnati Bengals played the Seattle Seahawks they were tied for last [Applause] to be close he needed three and it is right on the mark one thing you'd have to say for the Cincinnati Bengals offensive certainly is not predictable no it is not and now we'll have the official timeout and the change will come out for the measurement to see if Cincinnati was able to convert five of five third-down opportunities on the drive and it is just shy it is going to be fourth down and inches Oh tough decision decisions made is duck belfry they'll go with the field goal to try and take a one-point lead you agree yes all those last three flags yes I tell you why I agree because they Sheila had made up his mind to go with this and to go he changed his mind and was and it is up and it is good from 34 yards away and Cincinnati moves back in front of Kansas City by one 1514 the NFL on NBC is brought to you by Budweiser fresh fewer natural proud to be your bud by Napa we keep America running by Acura who invite you to test drive the new 1994 Acura Integra and by coca-cola classic always the real thing always coca-cola [Music] five minutes in 59 seconds that is the time remaining of the ball game here at Arrowhead Stadium and the Cincinnati Bengals lead the Kansas City Chiefs 1514 and lead Johnson had a great hole that will show you on that vehicle kicks out [Music] [Applause] and down to the 33 aside for a moment we'll be back don't go away he just you can see the punty members fabulous forty eight six on four kicks a sixty yarder but here's what he did take a look at the hold here what's the snap by kazursky loops on the right he catches it picks it up comes off his hip and sets it down a lot of times you don't notice that there are two other people involved in that field goal kicking of Johnson doesn't make that great catch like it doesn't go through [Music] Kansas City first down just outside their own 32 yard line [Music] [Applause] city chiefs [Applause] the fans are back in the bargain 39 yard line of Cincinnati JJ bro to the right of your screen has a little bit of an out and up booth Willie Davis clears it out with the street route Raaj owns in the trail position definitely got fooled on that flap and very quickly a gain of 28 yards and a first down of the Cincinnati [Applause] to [Applause] don't you see not too happy about that Marcus Allen cutting the middle losing a shoe coming out Harvey Williams comes in again the offensive line creating the holes for of it I mentioned before that I thought he might have lost a step there doesn't look like his quickness is that man nice cutback there interesting to look at the shoes you see all the normal brands and that's just a little funky line I'll be props stick it down into [Music] [Applause] first down at the 27 yard line of Cincinnati check of the clock four minutes and 11 seconds and counting time remaining of the ballgame Cincinnati by one 1514 well unlike Cincinnati you know coming into this game we mentioned the problems of Calvary needless to say the kicker from the Kansas City Chiefs has no such problems and 80% career kicker a lot of times you can actually see the Kansas City out there's playing for the field goal because that and here is Marcus Allen again [Applause] that's Marcus Allen next week and don't miss the Skills Challenge presented by Enterprise rent-a-car you have goths top players will be going head-to-head and right my bunker shots trouble shots and cutting that's all next week here on NBC it's a lot of fun to watch and this is a lot of fun to watch what is going to happen the clock is stopped now with three twenty four that is the time remaining in the ballgame and Cincinnati up by one 1514 strange feeling in this game and I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that everybody just assumed society is gonna come over and just get hammered here they've been extremely competitive it's been great we'll be back in just a moment the Raiders are San Diego at Pittsburgh but right now we have three 19 and counting remaining here there ahead stadium Kansas City trailing by one they have a second insects at the 23-yard line of the vendor flags on the play [Music] and Marcus Allen good cigar you mentioned David clean ler didn't want to use the excuse of you yes outside Cincinnati the gear you know the mental errors it's uncomfortable at this point you've got a situation we got second you know and about seven white give them a free five yards at this point it's just not good just can't do that offside on the defense number 94 and so an Alfred Williams one of the things you know Kansas City has been up amongst the leaders if not the leader in penalties this season they've been trying to cut the down particularly last week they had no penalties in the first half and they have they've had very few penalties in this part well cincinnati hasn't been all that penalized David of course that one absolutely gigantic there the way they try to remember we talked to him when he asked party shot hammer but he had the numbers the numbers are this the yardage is that and they do immediately they've really been working on [Applause] checking down in a yard for the first down [Applause] and Markus is trying to slice across and pick it up and the officials want to take a look at a measurement the last time out we had call the injury timeout was Dave John in that offensive line of Kansas City and he has an injured knee will not return Reggie McElroy has replaced and we will take a commercial timeout of you back in a moment [Music] Nick Flowery on the sidelines the field goal kicker for Kansas City's been loosening up during the time that he was out he was about eight nine yards out on the field looking around coming back checking the wind kickers in history of the National Football League third down and still a yard to go for the first day is Marcus Allen and he may not have made it announced in Savannah he wants to stop the clock and that was a great job by Alfred Williams submarining underneath Marcus Allen we've seen time and time again to able to vault over the top he was famous for that in the middle eighties with the Raiders all those touchdowns he took a shot on that leg great job by Williams I think you're right I think ish was definitely showing him he may have lost about half a yard so it is fourth down and a couple of yards to go and you look for the field goal attempt from the 26 yard line @m 236 yards is heads up to on the part of David Shula to not let them bleed the clock down to the two-minute warning because now even if he does make the field goal don't be what six seconds come off the clock they'll get the ball back with about 2:30 left hopefully with a decent return plenty of time to get in field goal position to their own and they have won that day being in Cincinnati one timeout remaining the candidate Chiefs have three timeouts you mentioned 247 I wanted to make the pointer guards - Nick Lowry he has so many things that he does before the kids look look at that look at where he is how far away is you know how some kickers a little bit nervous they don't want to draw attention to themselves he's just the ATO he loves it oh man does he love you by the way he has scored at this point in his career and it is successful here [Music] [Applause] as we did with the Cincinnati Bengals let's also give credit to the punter for the Kansas City Chiefs Brian with another good catch hike bike run art is just a little bit off and he makes a nice catch and hold go by Nick Larry the Kansas City Chiefs have moved out in front of the Cincinnati bingo 17 was still a lot of time left to go let's take another look watch the catch by Barker look at that right on the ground he doesn't make that catch it skips up into his leg but Lowry knows it's good you know what 80% for his career I think it's time to do something one of two things we either narrow the goalposts now because they picked the hash marks again how about this if the kickers are gonna be this involved what do you think about a four point field goal in the 35 yard line so we don't have the addition don't have the overtimes well here's the reaction first if they that's why you called the timeout David you knew what's gonna get that one new hurry rather you do he was gonna get down I mean only long does this view goes with those couple 35 and Beyond or four points so you come down it's 22 17 you've got a great kicker so you just set yourself up with a 35 yard line and then you rolled you roll the dice so to speak go for all the marbles I mean because people are talking about now that field goals are just there's way too many of them now you know the games being decided Baltimore later George Blanda yawns dinner ooh by the way is [Applause] lady the great Jim Turner [Applause] I was about to say two of those people the Hall of Fame be instead of the only pure kicker exact [Music] eighteen yard line [Applause] and stay with us here on MBC tonight of course stay with us this afternoon for the second half of the double header and then and sequins here on in and now the defense of the Kansas City Chiefs the crowd to really become involved disrupt the off of Cincinnati as they start for their own life four left why - they need [Applause] 6% pass over the middle is generic Brenner and finner is very quickly out to the 33-yard line and that all of a sudden quiets the crowd first down Cincinnati Klinger hammered by Derrick Thomas on the play but he stood tall the pocket [Applause] it'll be second in 14 salia MOA got it that's the first time he has really been effective since very early in the ballgame because if Dan was going to take over the bargain first who plays the game he made tackles for losses but the quick swim move he's able to get by the left guard make a big play to middle warning will be back following this ball game we have another good one for it see you the New York Jets and the Los Angeles Raiders the San Diego Pittsburgh a Janson city 17 Cincinnati 52 minutes to go now that the chop is a beer yeah now sure I'll certainly invoke as you mentioned the success of the Seminoles the [Music] the success of the systematic bingo this afternoon they have played well and they have certainly quieted the ground and speaking of the Braves it's nice to have you now full time football after your baseball season oh I really enjoyed it with a holler talk about the fans I mean we almost four and a half green KY for my broadcast partner [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and now yes from the sideline that will stop the clock he couldn't find anybody open and rather than make a mistake he goes out of bounds but it's him Newton in pursuit Dave Adolf defensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs pushing all their all the right buttons at this point now third and long kitted with him yesterday about hey you're coaching genius now leading the league in all those different categories [Music] but he has a great defensive coach follow party [Music] [Applause] after a short stint velocity [Applause] it's incomplete it will be 40 and oh boy experience of the young quarterback here the blitz comes got to stand in their throat long take your chance as fourth and 14 you can't like your chances with that as even if he catches the ball it's only a four year [Applause] the pressure from the outside safety and so kids are sitting we'll take over down [Applause] inside the 24 [Applause] one of the two or three best defenses National Football League his team to victory here comes smart Bayless on the bless nobody touches him number 34 the left of your screen [Applause] Klinger is arguing about trying to comment on what he could or couldn't have done but the reality there is that he had no place to go [Applause] Zander's and now Kansas City content just to run optical [Applause] and it is now time for the Hager Rinku free cotton super play of the game I know if I go so far as to play it was say it was super but it certainly is going to be the winner for the Kansas City Chiefs Nick Lowry as he has done so many times before with a big field goal in this case to go over 1,400 points in his career number five all-time in the NFL that is our hagar wrinkle-free cotton is a super play of that put the Kansas City Chiefs out in front of Cincinnati for only the second time in the VAR game by a score of 17 to 15 we now have 138 left to go and the Cincinnati Bengals are out of timeouts and I tell you one thing this young man David clinger he's looking good he is improving like you said he hasn't really had that many starts and the reality he's still involved in what would be your rookie year with a very young ballclub and he made some excellent players yeah I think that he certainly proved himself today people were wondering whether or not he could justify making him the sixth pick of the draft but I think he's proved today that he belongs yes and now just to run out of the class our statistician sweet mom our spotters down until Woolsey thank you gentlemen is great to work with you here and don't forget coming up next here on NBC the New York Jets and the Los Angeles Raiders or San Diego and Pittsburgh the executive producer of NBC Sports is Tom Roy the coordinating producer of NFL football and NBC is John Francis today's game produced by Bill Bernal and directed by Andy Rosenberg and if a live was produced by Ricky diamond and if a live was directed by Kelly Atkinson or td's Mitch Keller and Richard Sam severe so thanks to everybody as we'll take the official countdown with one minute remaining to put it in the record book the Kansas City Chiefs defeating the Cincinnati Bengals by a score of 17 to 15 and for Kansas City the record will go to 4 and 1 in for Dame Julie the Cincinnati Bengals the record goes 200 and 5 they're still looking for that elusive first victory of that's got to be frustrating really does especially especially today it's one of those deals where as they say in baseball you get blown out you're not as upset but in this case certainly they had a lot of opportunities to win one of those five field goals turns into a touchdown they do win but coulda woulda shoulda right and you could say Kansas City wins by two however it was the the game was much closer than the score factory because Cincinnati certainly gave the Kansas City Chiefs all that they could possibly want on this Sunday afternoon so take the official countdown the officials now have the officials now have stopped the clock with nine seconds well that was Charlie that was forced down by this shows I'm so you know they didn't want to take a chance on a black field also they just decided kneel down so they'll give Cincinnati one throw at the end zone yeah I lost even Ethan so theyĆve shoot over look John and we will have one possibly two more plays remaining without going back and running through the numbers with Cincinnati only attack now they actually gave another three seconds so quite possibly depending upon where this throw goes they might have to try out so trips are three wide receivers on the near side [Applause] the shotgun and this is under a throne and intercepted with the interception [Applause] [Music] the clock is stopped on the turnover with one second left in the bargain [Applause] and so in a ballgame that 59 seconds ago we thought that Kansas City had in the bank has taken a an interminable amount of time to reach his conclusion and that man right there Marty Schottenheimer isn't very happy with himself in terms of time management you know the kneeling down if they would have actually run plays into the line they could have bled the clock completely you know I'm a guy go to the rider to the left unless I say it hasn't come back to haunt them at all but certainly he can't be too pleased that they had 12 seconds there at the end because if he just runs someplace he could have run it out completely [Applause] and show now this will make it official Kansas City 17 and Cincinnati 15 once again the final score from Arrowhead Stadium Kansas City Chiefs 17 the Cincinnati Bengals 15 coming up next on mostly22lr most you to see the Los Angeles Raiders host the New York Jets and so you see the San Diego Chargers battle the Pittsburgh Steelers South Christensen I'm Charlie Jones you've been watching NBC Sports coverage of the national footballers
