we're back at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego where the Chargers in the Seahawks are deadlocked at 3-3 we only really had three scoring opportunities in the first half all field goals 203 were made Mike Patrick along with Joe Theismann welcome back to San Diego everybody we told you at the top of the telecast that the Chargers wanted to try to run the ball we were able to do that but they were really relying on their defense in their defense showed very well in the first day their defense has done very well they're putting a lot of pressure on Dave Craig Leslie O'Neil is the man that they count on here you see him come off the ball when we talked to Andy heck he was concerned about O'Neal getting on his corner that's that left shoulder see how he gets to the left shoulder leans into him manages to force Craig up into the pocket where he's put the ball in the ground a few times now along with pressure talk about good secondary coverage you see the two men at the top one down on the bottom look at him stay man-to-man they're running the routes for the receivers this is just an excellent job O'Neal comes in and forces the fumble we mentioned at the beginning that Seattle had always been able to force turnovers on defense and always been able to get special teams play big plays out of special teams they hadn't done it much this year but they have done it tonight well they haven't done it in a noticeable way I think the thing that you have to take into consideration is the Seahawks have had a couple of bad plays go their way it makes them look like they're not doing so very well their special teams have performed pretty good tonight their defenses it did get the turnover look in the second half same kind of football San Diego will run Marian butts there's no question about it in Seattle we'll throw the football three-three San Diego in Seattle as we prepare to begin the third quarter of play from Jack Murphy Stadium let's take a look at the halftime statistics Seattle 116 yards passing to 16th the rushing just what you would expect set by Marian butts 83 yards for the Chargers 21 for Seattle and the penalty situation the charges in trouble again with six penalties [Applause] Nate Lewis and the number one special teams in the NFL this time only managed to get back out to the 21 yard line any time a guy runs a kick back on you the coach makes special special emphasis to his team and say listen don't let this guy beat us or hurt us again so you can bet they're going to close on Nate Lewis big shot after that punt return in the first game Chargers start from their own 21 Billy Joe Tolliver only threw ten times in the first half completed six for sixty yards bucks was the big record and they will start with Marion Butz he gets five brought down by Jacob green let's take a look at some of the individual performances in the first half but with 55 yards to regain the rushing lead in the NFL Harmon came in late get 28 on four carries Miller the leading receiver for this club only had two and Byrd and say our the leading tackler for the Charter Marion butts has been spelled a lot by rod Bernstein throughout the course of the season to this point he's out now so question is can the guy go to distance that without being spelled something left to find out you may see more of Harmon tonight but we're just driving forward got a couple of extra yards from his own momentum it'll be third and one Harper and Wyman made the tackle the senior citizen to that offensive line out there leaving him Broderick Thompson six years the oldest guy on the offensive line he and Joel patent number 78 both up to six years in the league yeah you've been with a Chargers for six years you're ready for social security everybody else's first second or third year and to Toliver with time and grow short intended from Miller off his fingertips Robinson on the coverage Billy Joe Tolliver told me he said you know the one thing that I wasn't concerned with has been my biggest problem and it's my accuracy that was the one thing he wasn't worried about when he got into the things he said I think I can throw the ball at but now it's been his biggest problem John kid who has not kicked the ball very well tonight will punt to Chris Warren he waits at his own 26 yard line [Applause] big rush dropping back to her the return kid drill that way warm back to the 25 to make the fair catch 45 yard puddle on a hang time and no return Seahawks in the first half did not rush the ball much Chuck Knox told us he didn't think they'd be able to run it a whole lot Williams the leading receiver as he is for the club for the year five catches 36 yards and Robinson from a safety spot had to make six tackles this is an offense that has to do cute things little reverses little hitches and just keep the other team off-balance they can't line up and go toe to toe or something [Applause] Fenner gets the first flight center across the 32 that's a 31 and playing football must seem like a piece of cake to this young man all the problems he's had when he was a sophomore at North Carolina State one of the leading rushers in college twelve hundred yards but he was arrested on charges carrying drug paraphernalia he was in jail for 45 days misidentified as as a murderer indicted for that it just had all sorts of problems and his career has been resurrected here [Applause] Center across the 35 to the 36 he said he used to be so hyper get so upset at anything that went wrong it's a a lot of things have gone wrong in this chain to help him change his attitude well in this game you just could you couldn't survive and do the job that he's doing and be that type of an individual if you do you're gonna be out of the game in a hurry he's really got a hold of himself got his life squared away and deserves a big pat on the back eight rushing kiddies this season last year Seahawks running backs only had five and that in itself speaks for the job he's done and in the days of big money he in pro sports Derek Fenner is making $75,000 this year that's less than Jarnell Williams got as a bonus for coming to camp unselfish he's a starter I'm sure Ken Behring and Tom flurries that the owner and GM of the franchise will take care of them as long as he keeps on doing his job where's the big bucks lay at the end of the line if you keep doing what he's doing right now third down and literally inches [Music] Williams and Fenner are the backs behind Dave pray [Applause] venner on the toss got a nice on the outside could we turn the corner went down lost the ball and the linesman says it's down ground kid caused the fumble he reached out for that extra yard when the ball hits the ground it's down what a play by Gilbert and I don't like the call when you've got 13 inches and you start a tailback from seven yards deep in the backfield you allow the defense way too much penetration there's the job by Gilbert coming up now later the ball goes out right there Brown can't cause a fumble right there the ball is down and he's short Fenner 12 yards on eight carries and Rick Donnelly will have to come on to the Montague to see us you'll be kicking to Nate Lewis special teams may decide this one before it's over Donnelly good hi floating kick Louis at the nineteen no fair catch and no returns Boise Seattle is pumped up on special teams they've been burned a couple of times 46 yard punt no return big hit by Melvin Jenkins ESPN Sunday night NFL is brought to you by Cadillac and your local Cadillac dealer discover why the only way to travel is Cadillac style and by GE crystal clear cordless telephone so static free you have to not hear it to believe it even the County Administration Building in downtown San Diego is something to see most cities it isn't diego takes over at the 18-yard line play action by Tolliver a lot of time in the pocket that's the killing and he fumbles and Seattle couldn't get to it big break for the Chargers McEwen coughed it up Duane Harford caused the fumble and that baby was that their free for a long time Bob Hazen if I'm Billy Joe Tolliver I'm going to get in a huddle rookie no matter what I'm gonna let these guys know they can't keep doing this if we're gonna win this football game you got to hang on to the football McEwen just runs through the middle of the defense he's got it Harford does a good job of stripping him from behind Chargers just darn lucky the ball bounced out of bounds Robinson and Porter were after it couldn't get their two first down San Diego [Applause] hammering forward to the 37 as a part of San Diego's offense the HVAC is a guy who plays a very big part he's the back who's like a fullback area is right there and what he does is he does a lot of different things one you see he comes in and blocks the defensive tackles the next thing he does he moves along and blocks a linebacker in the formation or the third thing he'll go out as a receiver as we saw McEwen do on that last one second and seven give Butz a game once again outside Glasgow went for the shoe tops Lascaux has been in the lake 12 years he's no dummy on that particular play he'd get a chance to see what an h-back does there he is Arthur the h-back he's lined up in the wing position and just takes on the linebacker little face to face romance good job of blocking in Glasgow outweighed by 70 pounds sees nothing but ankles on that tackle you get butts up around the shoulders you're not gonna get him down from over five yards [Music] Walker Lyman get somebody's very close to another first down well one thing about these H backs and tight ends I mean you look at the weight of these guys Derek Walker six five to forty four but Bernstein's out he's 238 Arthur to 77 McHugh and 225 these guys are just a load once they get their hands on the ball and it's punishing especially when you get to the fourth quarter after you've taken that kind of a pounding that can really start to wear you down second and a yard [Applause] but for Seattle 37 yard line this is very reminiscent of the first half thrive of 90 yards well what it basically is is just Marian but we're coming at you I mean there's no mystery like coach Henning said this is basic football there there you see the H back McEwan come in motion flocks up on Joe King and buts just follows them through there it is again tight in leading through H back locked up get a little seen go let me find somebody to hit nice block by Walker [Applause] 20th time got into Nate Lewis the rookie out of Oregon Tech he's brought down by Wyman and Joe King our coverage of the NFL starts every Sunday at noon with gameday Chris Tom feet in the whole gang and at 7 o'clock back with a complete wrap-up of all the action that's on the primetime show at 7:00 Eastern then an 8 o'clock next Sunday night Joe and I will be in Minneapolis in a game three weeks ago that I don't think either one of us would have wanted to watch the Packers and the Vikings but look what they've done most one today Green Bay six to five Minnesota back from the dead at five and six and hearses back to but [Applause] down to the 12 he's just not - the one that about Robinson's going to have to count the cleat marks in his jersey I mean Marion putz was just in no way going to go out of bounds miss Nesbit Glasgow has got him on the sidelines widen in the middle season he tries to slide out but now putz turns the middle good job by Derek Walker that tied in now look he gets the handout gives way to Robinson said I'm not going out of bounds who else is there for being here 17 carries a hundred two yards to Marion Bucks the league leader in rushing not this time maybe a yard Glasgow from his safety spot was standing at the line of scrimmage we talked about this area before this is called the red area and some coaches they call it the green area but it's where teams have a tendency to play more man-to-man coverage and lock the linebackers up on running backs makes it a lot tougher to run the football they're going to give marrying a little bit of a blow now give them a chance to get least catch his breath for a little bit of time they just don't lose a lot Briony Ronnie Harmon that's the fourth 100-yard game for Butz this year the fifth of his career and Harmon is the deep man the formation you'll get to carry trying to go outside cuts it back still on his feet inside the ten to the nine good tough running by Harmon when you get a running back or a couple running backs having to move up the field look at this job Nate Lewis is going to try and block look at the job by the defense of that that's just super defensive play Patrick hunter just being a real strong strong guy on the outside block me man 6:08 to go in the third quarter we'll check on their injury when we come back we're tied at three lower left side of the screen the CEO he gets his knee just bent over fifteen third and six Robinson also out of the ballgame so Seattle uses two starters on one [Applause] with only his six catch of the year and his first touchdown Arthur carnie will go for the Boyd after and he's got it [Applause] [Music] quite a target that's where you get the matchup begin a linebacker on something like that all he has to do is get his body in the way somebody and we've had a chance to get him the football [Music] [Applause] [Music] outside on the defense well been on the field on the defense the penalties are declined kick is good timeout Butz got thirty nine yards on that drive and San Diego goes up by a touchdown Cox makes the touchdown catch and San Diego takes a 10-3 lead on Seattle was live 43 to go third quarter and carnies set to kickoff as a mystic game in eighth year that's what you that's what's called coming to play and that's the kind of guys you want on a ballclub guys in lineup in practice one of the things they talked about regarding Marian but the guys hurt but you never know it I talked to kyoki Kemal the trainer he says he gets nicked please Phil goes out in practices in place one will build deep to receive two yards deep in the end zone and bring it out special teams Ronni Harmon the first man down they stuff him in the 12 yard line after that mugging get a chance to see the touchdown that's Erin Cox right there he's going to push out on Jo Cade and just run a little angle into the end zone to get open they clear it out he releases starts outside gets the one-on-one coverage we talked about they do down around the goal line makes a nice diving catch in the end zone good angle Billy Jo Tolliver's got the big gun there goes that tight spiral nice catch by Erin Cox something going on Williams Leslie O'Neal waiting for him at the 16 yard line San Diego's got to be patient here Mike they can't get away from their game plan I was talking to Ken Behring their owner excuse me Seattle I was talking to Ken Behring the game they lost last week was a heartbreaker form they felt like that was tough and then of course with the Raiders losing today their chances for the playoffs became quite dim this is these guys are playing for pride right now San Diego is not going to give up a lot of yardage on the ground only three opponents have Seattle has about 25 what Jarnell never had a chance Junior Seau was coming hard you talk about Junior say out being one of those young guns here he is on the outside of Leslie O'Neal they bring O'Neal down inside and he gets there almost the same time as Jarnell gets the football this is really what he did in college so well he timed the snap count perfect and made the tackle four yards deep in the backfield third and six now for Seattle and their own 13 back dragged under pressure [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the speed of Sam's [Applause] wait a 60-yard never was a more evident of the speed of a quarterback to close on somebody there's a touchdown saving tackle but what a great job by John L same play they ran before the end of the half Dave Craig finds a little zone little help from the official and John L breaks a few tackles now he's offering there comes Sammy seal from nowhere tries to knock the ball out of John Hills he longest reception of the year hey you seen boba trying tomahawk the ball down [Applause] [Music] Williams [Music] [Music] you can pat les builder on the back but you got to give a lot of credit to Sammy steel for saving the touchdown and scenting this up this is an option play to the right great does the right thing but you know he he's got the ball in one hand me when you're that close to those guys there's no sense of trying to strain on somebody luck so trying straight on somebody it's not gonna happen back to live action and the San Diego up to the 33 [Applause] Gregg has coughed it up three times tonight [Applause] and I have to wonder about the option play from a guy who is never going to leave the league in rushing well you figure with the pressure remember they play the eight guys up front I'm sure they were hoping that somebody took Dave great it's not designed necessarily for him to keep the football it's designed to pitch it out in that case he was forced to keep it like you say he's put it on the ground three times tonight second and two after bucks got eight but tripped up in the backfield that time good job by John Nash the nine-year veteran sliced through and got him before he could get up a head of steam remember also Michael Seattle is in really a transitionary stage they changed their defensive philosophy from a three for which it had been for four or five years now they're playing the 4-3 the guy they changed it for is not playing a lot cortez kennedy because he in this training camp is a football team that's still going to continue to grow and get better defensively although once the seahawks are turning the ball over something they for Buck's trying to get it on the ground he needed to get Souza 35 and I think he's short 11 o'clock Eastern tonight SportsCenter Bob Lee and Dan Patrick all the sports news including a conversation with Dan Hampton I think you'll really enjoy that one of the class acts and football then at midnight tonight NFL primetime Chris Berman and the guys will talk about week 12 in the NFL and then at 1:00 a.m. Eastern live from Hawaii the championship game from the Maui Invitational Indiana and Syracuse to top 20 teams that should be a good one did they put on a show last night who knows game they did not make the first down length of a football short discipline of Indiana against the shoe box final Syracuse Chris Warren waits at his 20 pretty kick his bare chest NASA study unmanned Sunday that with the whistle had brought this the problem the whistle blew [Music] get the ball Donald Frank who's been involved with some big plays you could hear the whistle blow after it popped loose from the arms of Warren why good question why the whistled evil bald head on the field first on Seattle there's the whip freeze embarassed this yes is an embarrassed man right now we'll talk about this after we from our sponsor Joe Theismann Mike Patrick from San Diego Seattle trailing San Diego 10 3 now on this last play there's an inadvertent whistle that blows to stop the play now I want you to listen to this here Derek Warner going over whistle they can review this they can I don't know why they're bothering talking about it upstairs unless they say well let's negate the whistle but then you go against all the things that the principles that you've established once the whistle blows instant replay is out of it this ball was never caught it - muff and you can listen to the whistle [Applause] now you ran some reducing point the ball will be placed at the 30-yard line all right they're reviewing it for the these people have a right to be booing [Applause] creig the Williams that in the backfield plumber makes the stop of the 39 plumber leads this club in tackles Dave Craig did the right thing there Mike whenever the fans are booing and screaming get up under center run the play in this case complete the ball then he gets some sense of organization and communication back to your team [Applause] [Music] walked it from Center got it to center back her line of scrimmage plumber got him again okay and it doesn't look like they'll get a playoff walk winds down at the end of the third quarter and Seattle will be faced with a third and one when we come back to San Diego the Chargers leading the Seahawks to start the fourth quarter in San Diego are the charges lead at ten three Seattle facing a third one the last time they had short yardage you were critical of them for trying to go outside what about this time I think this time it's a great opportunity for play-action pass Seattle is a play-action team they multi I if you go boom third down from the I that's a great way to do it [Applause] Trenor sliced these forward it has the first down at the 31 that was my second option don't pitch it outside but running up inside there they did here's a comparisons between the quarterbacks great 12 for 20 but when you look down 12 student 14 for 20 Tolliver use only 15 passes that's what Annie wants him to do yardage is different and they will be in this offense the percents as a fake difference as well I've never heard a quarterback didn't say for third and one great time to pass first down at your own one-yard line great [Applause] Gregg unloads complete across midfield blades makes the tackle with the 49 about a half yard flag down on the play San Diego involving jr. sale a lot more blitzes giving him a chance to do what he did well holding number 54 the white repeat first down grant fizzled the center [Applause] okay he's got a load up front to handle les Miller first Les Miller playing for Joe Phillips who with a little bit of luck and hopefully the charges feel maybe back in a couple of weeks after that unfortunate incident that happened to him there's the penalty situation [Applause] first and 20 now for Seattle [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Gregg almost picked off by bird as he was covering Tommy cane and ferd already with seven interceptions this year number one in the NFL they covered it beautiful that's not the kind of guy you want to go up again it's one-on-one as you mentioned Mike leading the league seven interceptions here's San Diego they're 10 guys at the line of scrimmage what they're going to do is try and run him all the way across the field but as long as I got that guy in center field you're not going to be able to go down the middle they come off the ball David Craig rolls to his left now he just hangs lit up he told me that he studies receivers eyes and when they get big that's in timing time but that's exactly what he did [Music] [Applause] Rainn Williams is out there along with Donnie elder that play has been successful tonight for Seattle but they sniffed it at that time Goodyear blimp is with us tonight to Columbia out of carson california piloted by captain charles russell on a beautiful night to fly in san diego Columbia with us tonight glad to have you with us with 13 minutes to go in the game [Applause] [Music] preg under pressure O'Neil [Applause] he's put a lot of pressure on Dave Craig he's a relentless Russian feels like he's getting back to the floor and he had a couple of years ago before the injury and he had doing everything he can you certainly can't blame him he keeps Leslie on the other way Gate creaks cream a mile for first down can't get it off and DHEC did a great job Donnelly has to commend upon fourth and 20 waiting for fair catch signal makes it just inside the 40-yard line a punt of 39 and no return 12:23 to go in the game from San Diego it's the charges by a touchdown ESPN's Sunday night NFL is brought to you by BMW the ultimate driving machine to arrange a thorough test drive simply phone your nearest BMW dealer and buy Bud Light everything else is just the light in the background the Whorton important also here the wave here now this is something home fans get this all confused you don't do to wave when your offense is on the team and the quarterback hamper all the signals you see there the players trying to tell a home team or home fans be a little bit quiet but lost his footing went down at the 43 yard line Rufus Porter who was shaken up earlier in the ballgame makes the stop and what San Diego would like to do more than anything else right now there's another grinded out 50 yard drive Seattle cannot afford to allow them to do that right now Tom Catlin the defensive coordinator of the Seahawks is going to have to make a decision I think he's going to have to start bringing some people he's going to have to play an eight-man front and for San Diego to beat him throwing the football you saw the rushing graphic with Seattle only four yards tonight that's 115 yards Toliver over the middle the Cox Cox splits two defenders gets the midfield may have another first down tomorrow's headlines brought to you by Levi's Dockers the Giants lose for the first time but Philadelphia has beaten New York five straight the Vikings crushed the Bears the Colts upset the Bengals Dickerson at 143 yards the Packers had another fine game behind Anthony dill wig the rams knocked off the 49ers so the two unbeaten teams went down Kansas City now tied actually in the lead over the way through let's refine women but order closing from his right linebacker spot made the tackle order used to be a pass rush specialist now he is a full-time linebacker as they have gone to that for 301 it's taken a little toll on him he still is on some special teams course paid the Pro Bowl last year as a special team player and by the fourth quarter it gets a little tiring that time he plays the outside linebacker position and he chose to run the Blitz and that's I think the only way that Seattle is going to be able to stop merry and busting that offensive line still plenty of time 10:27 to go in the game but that Seattle defense is going to have to gamble and force something [Applause] war man rush on Tolliver and overthrown Robinson Willie interception run down the far side walk to the Toliver made the tackle after a return of 30 we talked about it before I mean then you know that San Diego wants to run Marion but you make them throw the football no and that's not the strength of their football team and Billy Joe walking off questioning himself [Music] we talked about it before accuracy has been his problem there's somebody in his face he told me he said he throws better with people in his face that wasn't even close if that was a Barney to hit the haystack his second touched interception of the game 12 for the year Cortez Kennedy was the moment venner [Applause] or not much darris henry rolling number 57 stepped up in the hole not an unusual situation for the san diego defense for the last couple of years they've been the only bright spot around here Ron Lind the defensive coordinator again they have to load on their shoulders to shut down that Hawks offense Seattle came in with only four interceptions all year they've made two tonight a jump of Billy Joe [Applause] charges show blitz and drop out of it Craig deep over the middle end complete through the hands of his tight end Travis McNeil who made the all-rookie team a year ago Martin Bayless was there but a catchable ball gotta make catches like this David Cray treats the defense perfect they're in a double zone there you see McNeil down the middle and he just I mean he closes his fingers before the ball gets there David knows he's ready right now he can't see he jumps up and go cien only 3 of 11 on third down I'm here Gregg the blades to get to the six and does of the 29-yard line fencing when did everything he could to keep him shorten the first down [Applause] blades comes up limping a little bit the motion from the left side of your screen they put pressure all you do is just dump it really under the armpit or the rushing defensive linemen here's the he knows T how he looked to the left to see where the first time America was just got the ball out past spotted at the 29 first and [Applause] picking this way to the 18 yard line Junior Seau grabbed him by the ankles and brought him down but it should be another first down for the single Kurt Warner being released early in the year John L Williams knew that he had to pick up the leadership roles on this football team he likes being the featured back he likes having the weight on his shoulders and he can handle it - outstanding receiver tough blocker and a fine runner New York carry that's the world she walks tonight [Applause] and centered dives forward near the 12 there's a flag down on the play here's how we got to this point Carney with a 19 yard field goal made it three nothing San Diego Seattle tied it norm Johnson hit from 26 he had missed earlier in the game and then in the third quarter Cox caught the only touchdown play from Billy Joe Tolliver illegal motion number 81 in the offense five-yard penalty repeat first time Tommy cane that'll back him up five and make it first and 15 [Applause] chain goes to the sideline they only go to one wide receiver this time that's plays to the near side get away from former who makes the tackle at the 20-yard line Dan Henning said something interesting about Plummer he said he's our Neel Alka wits just that steady guy out there who makes the plays that you have to have made and in training camp they moved him into a situation as the up back in their short yardage and so you know he's sort of like become the little fridge sort of the mini fridge already has a touchdown pass this year Jarnell Williams another fine night nine catches over a hundred yard [Applause] [Music] play action again [Music] inside the 10 the sticks are happy junior Seau's shoved him out of bounds maybe just shy of another first down he tried to lean forward his knee down on the ground they marked it where the knee is going to be good play-action pass Heller does a nice job at catching the ball with his hands got it on the outside away from the defense knees down then he reaches good spot by the official Billy Ray Smith for San Diego has a strained knee you will not return tonight excuse me a strained elbow so the veteran on defense is out there's a guy who's seen a lot around here in a lot of changes eight years he's just thrilled to have some help on defense for a change really and you know he's one of these ones with senior members of this football team [Music] third and a yard for Seattle [Applause] this of course forth down here [Applause] first down I can tell you exactly what's going on in Billy Joe's mind come on defense just stop them give me a chance to get back out there and redeem myself I have had enough thought many times in my mind that's why I know what's going through his head first and goal now Seattle up to seven yard line and that charger defense ranked fourth in the National Football League digging in they've allowed only three four dragging players with him down to the two Grossman headin but got a free ride for his trouble you and I have been talking about the job that got all offensive line and his charges have done you've got to give a lot of credit to those guys up front for the Seahawks that's heck and Bailey fees on the large that is they just blow them out there sale look at feasel grant feasel gets out pushes them all the way back to the one-yard line where the ball carrier went up second and goal inside the one [Applause] then see Glenn the safety was up there helping out it will be third and goal a lot of times you get the big pass rushers coaches will say run at him don't let him pursue Leslie O'Neal takes over the block of Fenner and sheds it off gets a little bit of help from Vince he grant actually makes the initial hit third and goal in [Applause] [Music] [Applause] drive is taking a lot of time thinner cuts down [Applause] [Music] was really a classy drive by the Seahawks they got it when they really had to have they mixed up the plays very well play-action passes what they do best didn't put a lot of pressure on Dave Craig and they let Fenner go up and over great explosion by his legs linebacker coming in just miss time to Junior Seau tries to figure out where he's coming in nice job by the offensive line just getting a piece of him that was Edwin Bailey not gonna man in the air so the center could go in the all-important extra point Norm's onsen who is missed one this year converts on this one and the 417 to go in the game we are tied in San Diego the Seahawks in the Chargers at 10:00 [Music] four minutes 17 seconds left from San Diego the charges in the Seahawks tied at 10 low line drive kick returned across the 21 there's a flag down Miller was back to return the kickoff San Diego trying to get something extra out of specialty and it will be offside against the Seahawks we'll see what Seattle will do my bet is a San Diego would make them kick it over when you got Anthony Miller back there you want to give him a chance to get his hands on the ball again offside number 88 of the kicking team five-yard penalty ree kick [Applause] the scoring drive 10 plays in 40 yards almost six minutes and Fenner went over the top to get the touchdown and they did a lot of it on the ground something they knew would be very difficult to do against this very good San Diego defense I don't know that's their offensive linemen dirty filthy sweat sweat pouring off their elbows that's when you know you're an offensive lineman you've had a day's work [Music] Chris Fowler Lee Corso and Charlene Hawks will bring you College GameDay Saturday at 11:30 they'll preview all the day's action and then our doubleheader the Saturday second ranked Miami trying to edge its way into a national championship against San Diego State out here on the coast and in Florida and Florida State Miller and Lewis are back to receive the kicks high and short Louis the 15th nice return across the 32 the 34 yard line brought down by Jeff Chadwick down on special teams 359 to go in the game we'll be back in a moment that ACC big E's challenge has become something quite special it will start on Monday on the ESPN we have 359 to go on this game 1010 Seattle and San Diego both teams with all the timeout well you know in this case I think San Diego has tried to get the ball to the wide receivers a couple of times both of them kicked off Billy Joe Oliver Oliver Marian but at throated Bolden's a Saxon tie game just control the ball Bucks has already gained 116 yards tonight going for tried to cut back in Nesby Glasgow cut his legs out from under the AFC West getting very interesting Kansas City swept the Raiders today they go to seven four so they have the advantage in any tiebreaker the Raiders have lost three of their last four ball games San Diego trying to win tonight to get to 500 they will have the division decision in their hands with the last three games Seattle they have lost four or five games in the fourth quarter trying to get within one game and Denver [Music] again this time close to the 4 yard line he'll be about four yards shy of a first down Wyman and Jeff Bryant brought him down this is a big third down for the San Diego offense and Seattle's defense and the reason is is because the Chargers can pick up a first down here they're going to have the ball out past their own 45 witchin gets them into a couple first downs for a shot at a field goal if Seattle can't stop them they're going to wind up with some pretty good field position so there's a big call my guess is is he's going to try and get the ball to either cox or one of the tie game [Applause] [Music] four-man rush [Applause] Palomar throws complete to Miller they will mark it at the 46 it will be a first down Santini Anthony Miller was lined up on the inside position next to Aires for Cox as Cox releases off he just runs a little move away it's almost like a basketball play see how he slides to the outside good tight spiral to his first out Miller looks back makes the play see I don't think Billy Joe Tolliver has the confidence to throw the ball outside to feel much let him work in at inside the numbers area these were cops almost every catch that Miller makes is for a first down coming into this game 37 of 44 have resulted moving the sticks we have reached the two-minute warning in San Diego the Seahawks and the Chargers tied at 10 Sports Center right after the game we'll have the story of this day of the Long Knives in the NFL was the Niners the Giants and the Bears learn the facts of life our conversation is with Dan Hampton of the Chicago Bears we'll also have the story of the skins game Dan Patrick and I ride after the NFL game let's get back to Mike and Joe thank you Bob two minutes to go from San Diego Chargers at their own 45 first down Toliver play-action they intended for Miller but overthrown and well covered by Patrick Hunter did not go for the pump fake neither did the Goodyear blimp Columbia they caught everything from upstairs lonely out of Carson California captained by Charles Russell security thanks for all the good shots guys [Applause] pretty stadium here in San Diego renovated when they had the Super Bowl second and 10 for Toliver minute 53 to go in the game tied at 10 [Applause] sit outside maybe two yards good pursuit by Jacob green I've got over there in Godzilla hell that first down play was not a bad try thinking maybe that the defense is going to put some pressure on to stop your running game you try and isolate somebody one-on-one PJ did a nice job of throwing it out of bounds so he doesn't wind up with the interception he is not been successful getting the ball to his wide outs all night it's got to work inside the numbers for his tight hands into the running back clock running 119 to go Toliver under pressure unloaded [Applause] San Diego calls a timeout Anthony Miller this time he brings the ball in has to had no success throwing the ball the perimeters got to work inside the numbers and that's what he does just comes down runs a little square in pattern first and ten on the 35 Miller was a Pro Bowl alternate of the year ago having another great season fifth in the conference and catches second in yardage 109 left's and San Diego with the ball just inside the 35 right now would be trying a 52-yard field goal attempt as they had to do that coming up after our contest SportsCenter Bob Lee and Dan Patrick then at midnight prime time to review all the day's action and then live at 1:00 a.m. Eastern the Maui Invitational championship the Hoosiers against the orange men but back in [Applause] and Marion putz will get the carrot for to the 31-yard line he only needs seven more yards to get to a thousand Cortez Kennedy made the tackles at Carney on the sidelines his career long last or week ten against the Broncos he has more range than that but that's what he's been called on to do I don't to me this is a sign of the inexperience of this offense because you got a minute nine seconds left you've already used one time out to come out you run a running play thing you should do is called you want to save those timeouts in case you have to throw the ball should have called two running plays in the huddle if you go to run Marian butts call the outside play called the inside play then you'll come up maybe third and two third and three but you're going to be in a better situation to utilize your timeout now they're down to one if they get stuffed here they call it again you're putting a big burden on on Carney shoulders to kick up longer field goal than he really should have to wind will not be a factor just to slight breeze blowing here in San Diego ball spotted 232 from here it would be a 49-yard account second and eight however the throw is the blitz dumps it up San Diego recovers at the 50 Jacob green holy cow head the first down and more it would have been a chip shot field goal to win it and he fumbled Patrick hunter knocked it loose they set it up perfect they cleared out that bright side brought Cox from the left side lines up making the reception really got the ball on the insider that's a cardinal that is a cardinal mistake of ball carriers you've got to keep the ball in the hand away from where the pursuit is coming Billy Joe just drops back now watch where he keeps the football he's getting pursuit from the left side he gets hit right on the ball and one hustle by Jacob Breen [Applause] [Music] Jarnell Williams on the carry out to the 17 Seattle does not want to do anything silly right here Cox had cut the touchdown pass earlier off that one up looks like Seattle would rather take this thing into another quarter if they're going to get a chance let's get a chance at some decent field position and not have to try and force the ball up in the air if I'm coach Knox the way Dave Craig has bounced that football around tonight I think this is a pretty good decision David's not had one of his best evenings this made a good choice they want to start it even up we're starting over at 10 10 the Chargers had been very good at protecting the ball in five straight games they committed only four total turnovers then last week against Kansas City they had five tonight they have four [Applause] and Craig lets the clock wind down and we will have overtime San Diego plan the way it should have been throw the ball inside don't throw it throw it outside some longer throw it's more difficult to try and block it run your running backs get it to the tight end unfortunately you can't control this again I can't emphasize enough if Heda had just the ball in the other hand it would not have been hit by the defensive player and you brought up an excellent point might be Jacobsen great hustle [Applause] man diego wins they'll receive and we'll have the kickoff in overtime when we come back to Jack Murphy Stadium almost ready to start the additional 15 minutes with Seattle and San Diego deadlocked at the end of regulation 1010 brush up on the overtime rules we've already had the coin toss won by San Diego and the three minutes break almost over two timeouts per team's a maximum of 15 minutes but it's really sudden-death first team to score its and how important is this game San Diego could hold a 500 Seattle could get the one game of 500 and 500 this year or the expanded playoff system might get you into the playoffs so this is crucial I think in 1818 at least 188 team is going to make it into the playoffs I'm almost sure out of the AFC and there's going to be a little bit different story there's one guy who would love to get his hands on the ball again and make something happen Seattle to kick it off elder and Lewis deep to receive [Applause] out across the 25 to the 28 yard line there is a flag down back at the 16 only one other overtime game in the league this year and Detroit against Washington Washington won at 41 to 38 in overtime holding number 34 the receiving team first down so San Diego pushed back how appropriate to have the overtime game with San Diego I think the best football game I ever saw was San Diego in Miami in overtime unbelievable I agree there's their record eight and six Seattle having an opportunity now to shut down this charger offense II get really good field position and that's what usually wins in overtime we'll start with butt nice job by Dave Aaron's number 50 stepped up and made the hip and there's the general manager of the San Diego Chargers Bobby better way to the Washington Redskins and this business he was upstairs he started down I'm sure when the Chargers looked like they were getting into a position to kick the winning field goal he's the most unassuming gentleman you could ever meet no pretense at all about Bobby Beverly term genius thrown around an awful lot but bowing forward across the 15 class Koston in on an awful lot of stops and he was there again one with Cortez Kennedy and Tony woods now fatigue becomes a factor too well I think Miriam butts has got to be a little bit tired we talked about it earlier as much as this guy wants to continue to play he doesn't have anybody spelling in the Bernstein house so he's had to go the full load rush for 128 yards total and been taking a lot of pounding where she's been dishing something out to who third and six Toliver dumps into [Applause] hesitance of 22 believable Arthur Cox fumbles the football again he did everything he could to protect the ball that time he covered it up with both hands and the ball winds up coming out Rufus Porter knocks it loose the fifth turnover he was going for the first down just trying to get that little bit of extra yardage they read the right he comes in and now look he covers up with both hands the ball lines up coming out it wasn't the first hit it was the second hit hit knocked it out Lascaux Jefferson hit him first then Velasco and Rufus Porter recovers 2:22 [Applause] just Falls forward trying to get the ball in the center of the field to set it up for the winning field goal [Music] every finger roll [Applause] Johnson came into this game 12 of 18 he's made one of two tonight [Applause] you know I don't necessarily agree with this this is not exactly a chip shot I think the Seahawks ought to be trying to pick up a little bit of yardage here instead of seeking Dave great would be 40 yards from where they are Williams very slowly into the line and you have to wonder if you're not going to try to pick up additional yardage why you risk handing the ball off or taking a snap from center well the first one they state's tried to sneak now they've run Jarnell now they're bringing this kicking team out they're just going to go for it the other thing you got to be careful of in this situation remember it's only third down Jeff camp is the fact of quarterback if they do try something anything so if they still get another a 40-yarder to win the game and it's good take advantage of a big turtle [Applause] [Music] go chargers 13 to 10 and get within one game of the 500 mark and stay alive in the playoffs and the bitterly disappointed Dan Henning walking off it's a tante so it's just a tough game you fight your heart out Arthur cops play those guys and lines up every week four he's doing everything he knows he put the ball in the ground last time now he's going to cover it up and it's a second hit by Glasgow that knocks the ball loose Seattle winds up with the recovery Rufus Porter making the recovery but here's a guy who made a mistake knew what he did to try and cover it up and cut and there it goes through and believe me nobody feels lower tonight than Arthur cops and norm Johnson with the winning field goal [Applause] Cox was ecstatic after scoring the touchdown the only touchdown that the Chargers put on the board but two big bumbles really hurt his club at the end Chuck Knox wins his 160th game tonight only Don Shula and Chuck Noll of active coaches have one more you've got to look down the road a little bit now the Chargers have the easier schedule Seattle still has that way outside chance probably won't make the playoffs this is going to be a big test for game hitting Jung team to bounce back against his Jets and be ready to play for an opportunity to be in the playoff our final score from San Diego the Seahawks 13 the Chargers 10 for Joe Theismann
