double n KH here again now you guys are used to seeing mostly junk on this channel like this junk hauling junk but today we're going to deviate from that a little bit because we got something that's not So Much Junk it's actually the most expensive car that has been on the channel I think this is a 1971 base model Mustang convertible and my buddy Carl has dropped it off because he wants to add some more power and a manual transmission along with a boatload of other stuff and I'm mean a boatload the heart of it is going to be this ATK 347 Stroker with dart heads Dino at 450 horsepower you got new leaf springs sway bar kit axle housing axles posy differential radiator I mean a just a ton of stuff that I got to get unboxed and go through well before we dive into all that let me give you the quick backstory on this uh he picked this up as it is except uh it needed a new top new interior and he actually did a lot of other upgrades too but like paint wise beautiful car I mean just look at that and uh wanted something to take his family out on Sundays cruise around quickly realized that the factory 302 just does not have enough get up and go and the automatic transmission it's just a real Vibe killer so here's how we're looking under the hood I think he put a new power steering pump new steering box he did new master cylinder I think a disc brake conversion and he actually has a channel where he does a lot of motorcycle videos I think a few on this too I'll plug a link to it over here Carl solder and so Carl did the right thing spent a bunch of money buying all these parts and then figured out you know I don't have time to put this together so he hit me up we worked out a deal and we're going to make it happen brand new seats he put in check those out very very nice and uh you know interior wise I mean this thing is just beautiful compared to everything that I'm used to working on so engine actually uh starts up and runs pretty good warm right I had it run a little bit ago actually goes got a real healthy sounding idle almost sounds like there's a cam in there uh he said when this sits for a while it does blow a little cloud of smoke but otherwise the engine's really healthy did a compression check 180 PSI across the board probably just need valve seals dried out but uh when you accelerate on this like listen I mean right there sounds great but if you go past half throttle listen it's misfiring really bad so I think this has got more power in it probably I can see why he was not liking how much power that cuz it's running like a turd let's try and address that first cuz planing to actually take this car for a little ride today with Jen uh he gave me my blessings to drive it as much as need be it almost sounds like it's restricted or something like or or it's just not jetted right we got a holway two barrel points [Music] ignition yeah the jetting is just not right on this I think or it might be clogged up from sitting I check the points got verified the timing 8° base 20,000 points but let's take for a little ride and see how it does underload guess you might as well put the top down right oh yeah let the sunshine in I was just turning the idle up and I just found a a slight problem check this out the positive wire on the coil it is just barely on there squeeze that down a touch little better I don't know if that'll fix all our issues but that certainly is a problem when it as it vibrates losing connection oh my gosh old throttle is just missing really bad gets up there though boy this thing is quiet and smooth even with the top down this is unbelievable I got to stop driving junk and Full Throttle acceleration now okay well I've seen enough we got to take that carb apart I know we're throwing a 347 in but I'd like to get this running better before we pull it that way you know it can be sold as a good running engine oh W's going to have to wait well because it is Easter Sunday this is our Easter ride yeah I'm take my lady out to dinner in this oh yeah I guess you need a little more room that's all it goes back it'll do a little tight for such a big car [Music] huh still runs a little rough but should get us there it will it'll be fine trust me so what do you think we've gone two feet so far but I like it pretty smooth right yeah what year is this 71 straight down the highway look at that it's actually really quiet in here too with it's top down he a few days later ready to jump back on this I got the green Mustang all torn down motor apart and dropped that off over at Peterson Restorations he's doing some much needed rust repair on it then I got all the parts for the 71 unboxed and accounted for the last thing we have to do before we tear this apart is get it running well so let's pull the carburetor off see what that looks like inside or maybe we'll just throw our known good carb off of the 67 on there yeah I think that's what we'll do and original carp in throttle's not hooked up but good enough to run it it's still you know Full Throttle it just bogs so maybe we'll throw some more fuel at it see what it does I figured maybe this Holly was just clogged up inside but sweet gasket didn't tear she's actually spicing span it's got 74 jets in it I don't really have many Automotive Jets I think these are these are all motorcycle Jets and they're not going to fit a holly I mean it seems odd the jetting would be the issue anyway but you know got nothing to lose so let's punch it out one drill size and my next drill bit is 92,000 switch I read online that's about an 80 jet so let's do that see what happens Precision rejetted Holly on oh yeah already what a difference [Music] check this float [Music] height yep we're right up to the threads we are a little low on vacuum I'm 13 at idle kind of bouncing around a little bit but and slight oscillation there [Music] well it runs a whole lot better now so I'm good with that good running 302 she rips a little bit better now take a glance under this car wow really nice looking as far as rust goes compared to mine anyway but I think the the attack plan is going to be doing the rear first we'll do leaf springs axle housing you know upgrading to that 9 in believe this is an 8 in right and then we'll do the transmission and all that stuff up there but man I he wants to keep these super quiet Mufflers I would love to ditch those and hear this thing but we'll keep them uh see where have to cut the exhaust it's only got a bolt bolted collector on the one side leaking good amount of transmission fluid from sitting in here here's all his new suspension work you upper lower control arms new sway bar strut rods calipers brake lines hoses beautiful let's get going on it get these brake lines off of here forget if I already mentioned it but not a big fan of these wheels hopefully you'll he'll get something different moment at some point [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] does this have a posy both spinning now open diff this will be a nice spare to have and in fact I think these leaf springs will even fit mine which mine rusted through just about so now I can try to figure out how all this goes together [Music] using the old washer and coupling nut technique to get these studs in actually ended up using the C frame press on a couple because they were just so tight and I didn't want to stretch them out or strip the threads little cating of the right stuff will do you thing will never leak for the center section we got 13 pinion teeth 39 ring gear teeth equals a 3.25 gear ratio oh boy she's heavy let's get just picked up one of these icon hammers from Harbor Freight it's always made in USA I was like heck yeah like to see so far liking it see how it holds up cuz you know they're orange uh dead blows they're just garbage they fall right apart like this stand you just spin it around as you're working on it a trans jack it that is the only thing I don't like about this is you know it pumps up good but if you're trying to use both hands you can't release it without reaching down for the release lever I used to use one that had a foot pedal for releasing way more convenient we got an issue with these seals I was just rubbing a dab grease on the lips and I looked inside and noticed since I was hitting it I guess a little too hard metal on metal the spring popped off and flew down there on both sides okay I was able to roll it back on that have been terrible if uh that went undetected all right that's all done took a little bit longer than expected it's kind of tight getting these nuts and washers in here they do give you an access port but you're like using magnets and such I used red Loctite on those nuts to that's in but pretty smooth most timec consuming part was getting these old poly bushings out of the frame for the uh Lea Springs I had to break out pretty much every tool you know a torch and drill I ended up uh heating a pick and using it but got the new bushings in there before I go any further we should probably fill this up with gear oil has the fill on the back and then it has the level check down here on the side I'm going to get a bottle of the Motorcraft friction modif fire for the py and then some super tech 8 w90 I like this fill up top and exactly 3 qus with the modifier brings us right up to the bottom of the threads our we next day now for my night cap though I put the drive shaft back in and took this out we're a good spin make sure the differential sounded okay it did I also wanted to start breaking it in before we swap the manual and the bigger engine in uh with these differentials you usually got to run them through you know three to five heat Cycles or 500 miles before beating on it and doing long trips and such but on that test drive I did have a noise uh so this backing plate I had to beat this back a little bit cuz it's just a little bent up however the rotor is actually skimming on a few other areas too on both sides so these rotors I got to cut this lip down grind it I was also I let this sit overnight with the Springs up to to kind of break those in a touch and then I marked the location for the sway bar bushings where they're going to go in on the frame essentially we got to use these U bolts drill a couple holes Slide the uball through and that'll be done that's a look where that mounts up on the in front of the leaf springs front of the axle and I'll have to grind this rotor down too you see it's rubbing up on the top and all around too kind of annoying you know brand new parts and you got to go grinding stuff and that should do it grind it down the whole lip and then chain for the edge no more rubbing you can see this frame already had quite a few holes in it I don't like drilling more but uh I actually I got a elongate this one because they want you to slide the ubolt through and I think get it around the bend and over yeah that's going to have to get elongated now we can drop this ubolt all the way around hopefully there It Is Tag that up a little surface Shield speaking of surface Shield you guys know Blaster sponsors the channel and this is one of my my favorite products I use it all the time on all my vehicles including the CJ7 the Rhino the king turd quad the kabod the 71 chevel the k30 rollback the 96 RAM and of course the 2004 Tundra you know surface Shield has kept this truck on the road these frames are notorious for rotten out and check out mine I usually hit this once a year and it stays all gooey the dirt sticks to it but it prevents it from getting all rusty and crusty I mean some people like to paint stuff but I'm all about preservation over restoration and like look at this rear differential the cast iron I mean you if you painted that it just be flaking off this kind of soaks into it and gives you just a real nice coating this stuff protects All Metals it's a len oilbased formula it has extreme moisture wicking action and it's a darn Breeze to apply look at that we are all protected if you do an open entire vehicle you can get this in 5 gallon buckets too over here on the C30 recer you might remember we had to weld the frame and that was back in 2020 to when we slapped a bunch of plate steel on here ran a bunch of beads and I hit it with surface Shield everybody was like oh you should have painted that and you also shouldn't have welded vertically but look no cracks and no rust on both sides I might add so if you want to fight Rost and corrosion and then consider checking out surface Shield thank you blaster for sponsoring the channel now let's dive back into the video and with this lowered all the way to the ground off the lift on jack stands that puts the sway bar right up where it's supposed to be and I did try jacking the differential up in the center with my my post Jack and it it just didn't do it at all bar was still all the way over here now we can just drop this on with some washers look at that nice installation and of course rub these up with some some grease first that should be a stiff rear [Applause] [Music] it's beautiful weather today and my goal is to run it through the rest of the break-in cycles and get it up the temp and let it cool for 15 20 minutes and drive it again see this guy staring at us what are you doing over here waiting for the sun to appear we go for a car ride boy oh what's that where did roof [Music] go that breeze nice you get some good sniffs you know I never been a big fan of convertibles just by looks but every time I drive one I'm like all right I get it it's pretty sweet it's uh I can see why top goes down price goes up that's this old farmhouse on the left somebody's redoing it so beautiful now I'm being cautious with doing the break-in on this diff but like I don't think this stock 302 is going to hurt nothing I think it's more with people throwing these boosted cars and big horsepower Big Blocks that maybe it's a good idea to break it in but better safe than sorry right come on boy let's go they say you can't go out here own the baseball field we say no that's what's great about being out weak day nobody here have a good 15-minute rest and break well she's officially broken in it's uh been through all five Cycles cooled down want to go for one last ride and do a 0 to 60 test before we pull this engine since we got it running much better now I was reading Factory time on this is like 7.9 seconds 0 to 60 all right I got this app called dragger so you hit start measurement and it'll start recording once we get rolling or rough 0 to 60 here goes oh dog off the line there but and there's 60 we'll do one more for a good measure here we go it's really sluggish off the line feel that trans though ship's real good all right that's it so on the first test 0 to 60 9.34 seconds the second test 8.83 seconds on their 0 to 60 and that was with no power break in it I mean this is not running perfect off the line could probably turn up the timing more but those are the base numbers let's go pull the engine now it's SC that we got the differential broken in now too and there's uh there's no noise coming out of there no howling cuz you never know with aftermarket parts what you're going to get well at this point I'm going to let her cool down and out with the O A little movie Magic here let's VOA how about an hour later I got pretty much everything off just got to take this crossmember I got a strap holding that I'll probably take this header off too because it's just really tight with those long tubes but these are uh these are kind of sweet they're actually made by headman headers made in USA right on that tag so I mean I'm not always a big fan of long tube long tubes just because they take up a lot of space but yeah she's ready to pluck all right guys we're back for the moment we're about to pull this 289 out of this 1971 Ford Mustang 289 cubic Ines coming out serves its purpose but we're going to replace it with a 347 stroker we might have to move the hood but I think I think we got how look back there buddy get in the [Music] [Music] back back a little bit [Music] keep going all right we just got the engine out things are going smooth it's spewing all over the place but it's no big problem we can clean this up sure [Music] the [Music] [Music] here's a look at our brand new clutch always make sure to wipe off the pressure plate with some brake clean and the fly wheel you see made in USA stamped in there too some deep holes for balancing but she's looking peachy it's got the dowels in there we got our clutch alignment tool pilot bearing some egg ARP bolts and a premium looking disc got some ARP pressure plate bolts and washers all good unfortunately I forgot to put the steel plate in oh come on killing me that's a little better Molly grease in there and on the pivot we can drop the bell housing on now next is the water pump cuz this one has the outlet on the opposite side actually I think we'll leave that off till we get the engine in swap out these original motor mounts for some energy units poly get you a little bit more vibration but got the mini starter bolted up went to check the oil level and he gave me a brand new dip stick with it you can see this was shipped dry it's just a smidge on the bottom uh but look at this thing instead of being a one piece like the factory this is actually brazed or soldered together on the bottom it's a steel tube and really tight fit but once I got it down toward the bottom it broke right off junk luckily I was able to use this dent puller to thread in and pop it out that means we'll be going with the original dipstick which yeah I think this is just a flared end it's not like two [Music] pieces well at this point I'm going to continue getting stuff ready on the car like do the rest of these stainless steel brake lines he's got this big long line to go down the the tunnel cuz that one roted off and he had replaced it with the cpro nickel one man can't imagine doing that with the engine in I got the trans bolted on all the new stainless lines in my brother's on his way over he's going to give me a hand drop in the engine in and uh you know just wrenching having a good time the this evening and taking this automatic trans shifter out get the clutch pedal going and it's funny you had this uh center console I'm like how the heck does this come up cuz it was in the way ended up just being velcro to the floor there only really rigid too kind of a convenient design you know here it is best thing that ever happened to this car I really just want to Wing this across the driveway but I suppose it's probably worth something and don't let it drop okay once it's out now get those hands on up up what up what a little heavy yeah it is a little heavy yeah kick him on the front kick it on the front right sub H the steering bar much easier with the hood off next question is are these long tubes going to fit without hitting that uh steering box I don't know these are pretty though wow Patriot exhaust well next day and I think we're ready to test fire this thing up uh pretty excited but there is still a laundry list of things that need to be done just to Breeze through that real quick I'm still waiting on rear brake hoses got to add power steering fluid but we have no belts yet because the uh pulley on the bottom I just had to order another spacer for that 78s to get the alignment proper on these we got shifter install parking brake cable kit that's a big one uh it's like this custom Universal kit and requires a little bit of fabrication to make it work the clutch pedal that's probably the biggest thing left so you got to pull the whole uh clutch pedal bracket out of there I drop the steering column to get at it and then Scott Drake sells this little kit here to be able to retrofit it I think we'll have to take the seat out to get a little bit more space because I was already looking at it and well that doesn't look like a fun job you got the speedo cable neutral safety switch has been bypassed for now drive shaft got to get a drive shaft made for this uh to weld the exhaust still these bolt onto the collectors then weld to the existing exhaust but uh these are 2 and 1 half outlet and his whole pipes are only a 2in real kind of puny little quiet exhaust so maybe you know that should be my opinion upgraded to something a little bit bigger so since I'm waiting on parts all that will be in a separate video but I'm thinking let's fire this up real quick see if it runs right because uh if it doesn't then we'll have more diagnosing in this video I think I got the the firing order all proper of course we have no colant I did pop the distributor out and prime the the system oil system we got a Motorcraft filter on there trans has been filled up it's a neutral I did Prime the carburetor too we got full choke I still have to run a wire for that electric choke too but should fire right off yeah R's pretty good ah that sounds really healthy okay well sure my neighbors hate me now but uh that thing is dialed I can't wait to drive it did you hear this I think we'll have to leave the exhaust off uh for the first test drive too that thing sounds Rowdy with those long tubes open oh yeah so anyway uh that's I think that wraps this one up guys I have a lot of hours invested into this just everything was like I had to massage these parts into place nothing I mean with the rear end that all bolted right up no no problems there but as I started putting all this together it's like everything's just not I mean for example oh look there you go we have a fuel leak already so that plugs got to come out I know that's tight though but this uh fuel hose adapter I had to you know cut it down it wasn't the right length uh for he gave me a a steel fuel line that I was hoping was going to fit but that didn't so right now we just ran a rubber down to the pump I didn't come with the fittings for the pump so I had to go get something for that all that kind of stuff really uh you know it I'm not trying to sound like I'm complaining I'm just saying when you're doing a large job like this if you don't have everything dialed in exactly what you have and bolt on Parts it takes a lot of time to go get everything you need and keep running out and all that stuff even as simple as like oh I need an oil filter all right let me go get that versus having having a whole laundry list of everything you need and covering all the angles I'm not good at that I just work like piece by piece by piece and at the end everything hopefully goes together good but wanted to show the build sheet on this engine in case anybody's curious about the specs it's by ATK it's their port number hp100 c and they sell for about $8,000 on Summit Racing or uh Jags or what have you the horsepower 450 torque 450 it's got a seasoned OE roll block here's your borin Stroke 4.040 by 3.4 it's got a scat nodular iron crankshaft that is 28 o externally balanced scat forged ibeam rods with ARP bolts forged 10 to1 compression ratio Pistons by icon it's got total seal Molly piston rings hydraulic roller cam by comp and here is the specs on that double roller timing chain Dart Pro one aluminum cylinder heads with 58cc combustion Chambers 202 and a 160 exhaust valve aluminum 1.6 roller rockers a front sump pan with a meling high volume oil pump it's got that scat external balancer and I guess if you guys want to check this out for any anything else like the elro intake but yeah we'll see maybe we can get this thing on the dyno and see what it puts down at the wheels most importantly we'll see if it holds up and if it was built properly I'm happy that fired right up because if it did didn't then you know more labor more labor so she sounds really good and I appreciate you guys watching so see you in another one hopefully I get it out within a week or so see how long the parts take thanks so much for watching see you guys soon I'm over here at my storage yard and got the 74 Torino elite under the cover but look this is is a great example of where a cover is super necessary you got uh massive amounts of sap coming down off the tree it's crazy looking looks like you know water be droplets but yeah without that o that would be uh ugly I know some people aren't fans of covers cuz they say it traps all the moisture in but you know I don't think so I think in this case it's keeps keeps it good looking you know
