today's the day we are going to get Jen a new car time for an upgrade we have made it over to potown and by new I mean older a 1998 first generation Toyota Rav 4 check this thing out I'd still say it's an upgrade yeah this popped up on Marketplace for only $1,100 he says it needs a head gasket but I'm wondering you know maybe it might be something more simple look at that look how clean it is in here I know so let's pop the hood on it yes it has a little bit of you know peeling clear coat but you could probably get this reshot actually with clear coat this paint buff that out easily no problem um these are great cars you want to grab that hood prop bab back when I was working full-time at the shop I would see these come in they never needed anything just a topnotch little compact SUV so we got a newer belt new alternator a little bit of valve cover leaking this is the 2.0 basically same as the 2.2 more known in the the Camry get the two coil packs there yep fresh oil filter feels like he had this running before we got here not a big deal see it's got a newer red in it yeah it's actually got pink Toyota cooling too how about it and it's up to level so I don't know I'm going to just drive it home see if it needs an egg gasket or not it does have the Toyota battery from 2020 uh one of the biggest nicest things is the fresh tires these are uh dot January 2023 0123 little bit of Feathering on the edge but tons of meat Blackhawks got good tread I love on these two that they have the the plastic all on the bottom so even if it starts rotting on the bottoms of these doors which I'm sure they're not yeah like these look fine but even if they do um you're not going to see it for a long time you got the VIN number on all the body panels too spacewise I mean this is like about the same size as your Civic but you got plenty more overhead and it smells so good in here it really does comes Factory with the CD player um one complaint I'll say these these cup holders look at them they're tiny and your shifter's in the way you're not going to put much there got one back here though so that's sweet oh yeah let's see if the AC works and if everything else works but just kind of finishing the the tour underneath yeah fresh fresh tires all around and underneath I don't know if you can even see but she's not Rusty and crusty at all it's actually got the factory exhaust it looks like drum brakes in the back probably use a new side marker that's all faded and ugly um what is this here oh you got a hitch baby we can get you yeah we can get you a Jet Ski trailer behind this thing one feature I don't absolutely love about these is that the the back open sideways seems like it'd be convenient but let's say you have something long you fold these seats down they they don't go flush but they do go down I mean would get drive down with the something sticking out the door all the way open I don't know or if you're having a buddy help you load you know it's it's going to be it's going to be in the way so that'd be nice if it opened wider or above but I mean it's cool if you're like out picnicking or something fire this and uh just had some coffee too 181,000 miles There She Goes hitting all four no smoke out of the exhaust yet nice and Whisper quiet these do have a timing belt it's one avable downside but you know not a ton of space to get in there either now the engine light is on he said it's for an EVAP code which I'll just take his word on it you know not a big deal if it needs something I mean at the price you can't really lose you see this is uh duct taped I mean the parts alone we could part this thing out if we had to for for more money and check it out fresh inspection January 2025 exempt on the emissions We are following the current owner to the auto Tag's place and I I'm really excited we stopped over here at Ed Joe Auto and uh I got quite a little place in here very uh snazzy we got the wood paneling and the old school Magnavox he said this thing just you know won't kick works yeah all right oh he going fired up which turned into support for I love it I love how he have to wait for it to fire up I haven't seen one years the picture great pict nothing it's amazing you're missing some RAB I also loved he's got his little notes Here went to WWA be back soon please wait pretty on [Applause] there yes ni scripts do it every time they do vice grips and a silicone for a win we are driving home with uh no plate because we forgot to bring a plate but we got paperwork we'll be I'll just snug up real close to him see how far this seat goes oh look at that tons of leg room 6'3 tons of space it's a vintage Toyota we can actually put uh classic tags on this thing or even maybe antique tags I mean this thing was so clean and he was so nice that we bought it without even driving it like I didn't even have to look at it ship's good nice and quiet fuel economy is a a big priority okay the passenger window doesn't work unless the Lock's on it doesn't work it's okay I can fix that all the other ones do little bit of thumping on braking I saw there was some Rust patches on the rotors though 1,00 bucks great deal for this car can't wait to give her a little TLC this was just a sin ah the worst duct tape it's the worst just needs a new clip you know or just let it flop in the wind yeah just got to stick with mediums can't get large now this does have the electronically controlled transmission button right now it's on normal let put it on power mode powerful sport shifting baby handles nice in the turns oh this thing is great the rated fuel mileage in these 24 29 Highway smooth and quiet as can be we're at like 2500 rpm doing 65 see if she overheats it all or eats any cool ones on the way home AC SE blows cold about the Heat Heat's working but kind of just mild you can see a limmer power plant all from the distance there an hour later all highway we've made it back and cooling temp never came up on this I actually hooked up the scanner and we're only up getting up to 145° fah no heat so first thing we're going to start with is a thermostat now he said that he brought it to his mechanic about the no heat and she said that it needed a head gasket for that which does not seem to be the case so I think we got lucky on this one cuz coolant up to level you might see 145 if the coolant low and the temperature sensor is not getting the right reading but not the case here and we've only got one code it's actually a p401 exhaust gas recirculation flow insufficient flow detected so not evaporated thermostats on the bottom hose on these and doesn't look like that's been messed with at all rad I mean I can hold my hand on hose and rad this thing just never got up to Temp at all into our heater core hoses same deal I mean they're getting warm but not hot start with getting a th St guys what do you think of the car got to do your your sniff inspections Goose man what do you think this is your new ride oh yeah he likes it there was a cat in here though boy you might smell that says I don't mind cats come on all right he loves it sniff sniff sniff W this is tight back here when I'm all the way can you still sit there when the seat's all the way back I think so kind of oh yeah not bad not bad I give it to dock in approval SP Tire stuff we have a [Applause] jack we got a Garin how about that don't see a jack turns out it's actually under the passenger seat okay Jen's first time driving go got to get back buddy it's so cute lots of glass uhuh like a fishbowl owner's manual G is that you that stinks he did just poop oh I just love this yeah yeah all right guys this is your new rig then it's official so on all these Plastics we can hit this with like uh we could hit with a heat gun or a ceramic coating or lots lots of options even a silicone spray but that'll that'll you know take some of the Gray Away the problem is just hitting it with this this this won't last that long but what do you think pretty yeah this thing would shine up really nice oh let's just do a quick one Sil on it shake down take a peek of the brakes and maybe we'll go get that thermostat too tire tread you got 9 30 seconds on the front no play at all some Feathering on the edges like 10 30 seconds on the back these are basically new no play Anywhere we'll do a rotation and nine a little feathered no play real [Music] tight these are definitely aftermarket rotors and you can see it was parked for some period of time it's got uh nice brake pad Mark there I did feel a little bit of vibration going down the road these are real skinny rotors for what they are but yeah I mean on the pads we're like brand new about 133 seconds and uh not too rusty or crusty in here you know normal Pennsylvania stuff but sway bar links tight bushings are tight you got a torn inner boot on the TV axle you see that man uh-huh so that's allowing dirt to get in there um You probably just replace the whole axle with new boots or we can get your OEM Toyota boot kit if you want brake hoses should probably be replaced too you got some some dry rot on the the sheathing but I mean they're fine for now they're original dated July 1998 on them [Music] needs a adjustment on the back on the back shoes we a little bit low maybe 4 30 seconds and then like 3 30 seconds over here they're getting a little bit low on the wheel cylinders you pull back this Dust Boot and got no brake fluid spilling out on either side you see inside of your spring the little uh limiter damper whatever you want to call it that rusted kind of fell just sitting in there it's fine there not hurting anything same deal over on the passenger side still got some life in them you do have uh Fair bit of rust on these backing plates but you know they're okay you got same deal over here these brake pad marks or rust marks that's what we're feeling when we break but the caliper pins aren't jammed up and St you see how this this brake hose see how the weather stripping is all kind of coming apart we'll get new ones of those if you want to keep this you know that's good cuz the next layer start it's rotten and yeah just normal crusty rust and the inner boot is torn on this side s bar bushing on this side you can see is totally shot but they ain't making noise yet Link's tight no leaks at all completely dry oh we do again have the Pennsylvania rust these back in place are shot it's just what you deal with out here I can see somebody did one new brake line on it and they just put a union ran it back over here whatever you know I mean the rest of them look pretty good overall I see some spots you know this this vehicle is worthy of getting the under hitting it with some surface Shield or oil on the bottom because you know it's not terrible yet but it's it's going to just get worse and worse and people out west that watch these videos it's like Just Close Your Eyes cuz uh you guys are lucky you don't have to deal with it uh it appear somebody you know welded a new hanger on here painted that up and this is a new pipe that was welded in re differential not leaking I'll check all these fluids over these are original CV axles 1998 no tears on the boots see that back hitch stainless look beautiful you go underneath though and it's Rusty but not the structural stuff yet these are the deals you're looking for somebody you know first question I asked when I talked to him on the phone is how long have you owned it for said 14 years that's that's what you want to hear you know if you said oh only 6 months or a year that's when people might be trying to hide stuff or they had issues and they're trying to get rid of it and most importantly just get a good deal so you have cushion for if things go wrong you're not going to lose your shirt you know if we paid five grand for this thing yeah you better pick it apart and make sure it's a good rig but at 1100 you just there not a lot of room to lose you can literally Park this out and make make money right now if if say the trans was blown or whatever he been sitting for maybe a half hour now let's pop this off see if we're still up to level I mean I see the recovery tanks all the way up this little bit it's going to spill out if it is yeah we're right up to the top head gasket appears to be totally fine the other thing is how long was this car driven without it getting up to Temp cuz that will wreak havoc inside the engine I once had an 89 Toyota pick up and I drove it home about 2 hours after buying it and it never got up to Temp never got hot and when I pulled the valve cover off that engine to do a valve adjustment you couldn't even see the valve springs there was just so much sludge the moisture will never boil out of the uh evaporate out of the engine if it doesn't get up to operating temperature it's really really bad and uh of course all that sludge going through the engine all the bearing surfaces were completely scored like the uh where the Rockers right on the rails through the heads those were just all gouged up it was it was bad did a full rebuild on it uh so no it's not stuck open odd but you know I mean based on what I would have was seeing going down the road I would have thought it would have been stuck open but it's probably just worn out as these Springs wear out I mean they can open too quick so we'll go get a new one of these toss in and see if that takes care of it actually upon closer inspection and shine a light behind it I I can see some light behind this little seal it has a Rubber seal that has gotten hard but this is an 82° C thermostat and I just looked it up 179 de Fahrenheit is what that equates to so I don't know if somebody threw that in there trying to mask an issue or who knows maybe this is what it takes Jen's going to go get that thermostat a seal and a gallon of antifreeze and she just got back with a motorad Ultra stat which is made in Israel and these actually do take a 180 step from the factory which makes sense cuz it's on the bottom of the engine you s a little bit yeah yeah this is her first car so get it cleaned out and listed we have to mention all the fun issues it has all right new stats installed let's put our fun Lo to easily burp out all the air see on these new bottles though you don't have to pour them the old way like like this cuz it actually has a vent going through oh look it's shooting out of the vent now how about that to work on cars daily a spill free funnel is the way to go [Music] let that burp out see if she gets up the temp all right 10 minutes Island and we have hot heat temperature gauge is more around the Midway which is where it should be and our cooling temperature 183° that is what I'd like to see now I'm going to raise the engine R pm to about 2500 let it run until the radiator fan comes [Applause] on and they are both fans kicked on at 208 they are flowing good here load put on the alternator temp gaug still in the middle can hear the evap purge solenoid cycling down there oh actually oh you hear that got a torn hose okay wonder it was so loud yeah big old tear in it we'll get a new one you other than that this thing uh Jen's going to just drive it and I'm sure it's going to be fine I don't know why somebody said it needed a head gasket Dy apparently they said that because it wasn't getting warmed up I mean my best guess is seeing this newer radiator the old one may have blown the top off cuz these old Toyota radiators can get dry the plastic and and pop and maybe that happened and they said hey there's no other reason besides a head gasket but I know time will tell Jen put some miles on it and I think it's going to be a good rig something else I like to do on a new car is go over each Fastener with uh some kind of lubricant in this case you know surface Shield hitting it up that'll soak in and keep the rust from spreading it and then that also make it so you can get those nuts and bolts off in the future also go over the battery disconnect the cables take them off clean any corrosion and then I like to use uh b r waterproof grease on the terminals but anything will do you you know any grease surface Shield just get it on there you know like that hose clamp you want to be able to take that off in the future hit it hit it [Applause] down she looks real happy I do have to say shame on you whoever put these new terminals on completely dry I mean I always take the Boldt out and hit them with grease or again whatever you got otherwise you're going to have issues and also these terminals you know hit that grease on the bottom that's where it really matters uh because the battery acid will kind of evaporate or Wick through where the lead goes through the the casing and that's that's what causes the corrosion and I'm sure there's some guys out there that'll argue oh you can't do that because of I don't know you're messing up the contact between the lead and the lead no been doing this way my whole life I suppose if you were using a winch or something and pulling huge loads and you had these terminals heat up enough to where the the uh grease C on fire or something I maybe that and these terminals alone are another example of why I love these cars like use a marine terminal uh unlike some Modern cars they don't have this style and some special terminal that's very hard to get you can't put some generic off the shelf stuff or you get thermostats you can't even replace the thermostat you got to replace the whole housing that's like only available from the dealership or something on these new vehicles it's ridiculous ridiculous take your hold down off too clean all the rust and luud that up Blaker yep yep high beams all right you actually got a headlight out too yeah pop the head real quick let's let's put that in she got a third brake light out in the uh headlight got a 921 bulb should have one up in the Lucy there's a 912 same difference really there's 921 brakes all right Hood pop there it is oh actually it was just the the wire off in here right connector tab wasn't locked okay the Great Wall of water probably its first and last car wash is not its first car wash make a wash selection and enter your method of what do you want Super Wash I think that's the cheapest you have selected the super you have selected the wash and rinse car wash that's it no dry for you you got sure the budget [Music] wash Jen has been out here for hours vacuuming this thing and cleaning it all up she's she's getting her supplies and tool kit ready got her tent and I just think it's so cute what she doing down there now baby I'm bringing tools to my car yeah oh look at this she's getting her tool kit ready you getting your emergency supplies together tool box basic the basic stuff oh we are next evening and Jen said the car is not running very well she went around the block it's very sluggish no you can guys hear that it's a dead mess oh yeah probably just a you spark plug wire or ignition coil hopefully not any kind of engine issue like a broken valve or something that actually happened to our Civic it uh busted an exhaust valve had a dead M so oh by the way uh timing belt does have a sticker on there I didn't see it before 134,000 Mi that was done it uh so so this has got two coils down there and wires let's do a quick cylinder balance test don't do this at home you could zap yourself but we're looking for a change you see how it has a little bit of a shake right now we're going to see if it stays the same so okay now that one changes and you can hear the spark oh there it is see it doesn't change I don't hear any spark coming from that either so I don't really have to go any further but let's see yep yep shakes more sparking same deal so now we know it's either the wire or the coil coil would be definitely the more likely culprit it's pretty rare that a wire goes bad but let's uh do some swapsies real quick I just crossed the two and three wires over so now we can if it's long enough uh yeah we can squeeze that over see if the misfire follows along and if it does then it's a bad wire oh still bad so bad ignition coil or wiring or ignition coil driver but of course we're going to just go get a coil for it and the local parts store had a coil in stock and we get some plugs and wires as well you I'd love to go OEM on this but uh rather get this done tonight I'll pop the airbox off and that's it right there just get this connector off and then it's two 10 mm as you can see right there but they're on the back it's a little tighter and new coil in you can see the one that came out of there definitely an aftermarket I'm not surprised to see that they just don't tend to last as long and all the spark plugs you know they they're pretty worn out see all the tips are kind of like ovaled and skinnier the gap's pretty big well there's a brand new plug a nice round electrode and let's some that perfect like a kitten nice and smooth what are the odds that the coil goes out next day after buying this thing and luckily very easy to diagnose and replace everything on this car nice got a mechanical throttle instead of uh fly by wire drive by wire to wrap this up we're now a few weeks and over 500 mil later it has not ate a drop of coolant we're good there running like a top Jen's new daily she does plan to do some videos shine it up with plastic doing the CVX I did diagnose the p0401 to be a bad EGR switching valve which is all the way down on the bottom kind of hard to get to so not really a priority right now now we were able to sell her Civic for 1,600 bucks too so I think I consider this an upgrade too I mean hopefully she has better luck with this than she did her Civic CU that thing you know had some problems over over the years so appreciate you guys tuning in that's her new ride if you see it in videos and we'll see you again soon dou n kh2 overall
