Glory to you oh Lord. - Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the spirit
into the desert for 40 days to be tempted by the devil. He ate nothing
during those days. And when they were
over, he was hungry. The devil said to him,
"If you are the son of God command this stone
to become bread." Jesus answered him,
"It is written, one does not live
on bread alone." Then he took him up and showed him all the
kingdoms of the world in a single instant. The devil said to him, "I should give to you
all this power and glory for it has been
handed over to me and I may give it
to whomever I wish. All this will be yours
if you worship me." Jesus said to him and
replied, "It is written, you should worship
the Lord, your God and him alone shall you serve." Then he led him to
Jerusalem, made him stand on the parapet of the
temple and said to him, "If you are the son of God, throw yourself down from here. For it is written, He will command his
angels concerning you, to guard you, and with their
hands, they will support you, lest you dash your
foot against a stone." Jesus said to him and replied, "It also says, "You should not put the
Lord your God to the test." When the devil had
finished every temptation he departed from him for a time. The gospel of the Lord. - [Congregation] Praise
be to Lord Jesus Christ. - There was an advice given to
me by a good friend of mine, Father Robert Michael,
may he rest in peace. He said, "Mauricio,
remember you are weaker than what you think you are." I thought it was an insult, but I thought about it,
this is coming from a priest who served the
Lord for 64 years. There has to be more to it. And when I started thinking
about it, he was right. The problem is that
when temptations come I think I'm strong
enough to handle them. I think I am strong enough on my own free will
to overcome them. And he was giving me the advice, know that by your own
strength, by your own will, you're gonna fail. You have to rely on the Lord. You have rely on him
to be your strength. He has to be your support. He has to be your own. But for that to happen, I
have to come and humble myself and realize by
myself, I am weak. By myself, I cannot
overcome temptations. By myself, I am a fallen human. But it is him who raises me up. It is him who gives
me the strength to overcome the
temptations of the devil and to come closer to himself. This is what Christ
wants from all of us. During this Lent
season, humble yourself. I want a humble and
contrived heart. I want you to know
that by yourself you are nothing, but
you need to seek me. You need to depend on me. I need to be your whole support. I have to be your hope. I have to be your faith. I have to be your God. That is the main thing
that we need to know this Lenten season, remembering
one of the first rules of the spiritual life,
you are God, I am not. You are God, I am not. Something so simple, isn't it? But so hard to
actually comprehend and to have it in the heart. Because once we
comprehend that rule we know that I depend on
him, that he is my strength. He is my faith. He is my everything. And when I put
everything on him, when I rely solely on him,
he will give me the strength, he will give me the support
to remain a child of his, because a child knows his
father, obeys him, follows him, and tries to please him. So as we go through
