i invite you to stand when he calls on me i will answer him i will deliver him and give him glory i will grant him length of days psalm 91 verses 15 and 16. in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit the lord be with you as we uh hello everybody as i've just as we begin this this mass uh um one two things to be reminded of one is it's only almost been a year now it's almost been a year since we've had these masses and at the very beginning one of the things we just kept trying to remind each other of was that we are really worshiping we're really praying we're not simply watching mass online we're not simply watching mass on a screen we are praying we're worshiping the lord that's the first thing so just that reminder of as we have this first sunday of lent to just reboot our brains enter our hearts so that when we come here right now and this sunday morning that we are worshiping the lord second thing is we're going to hear in the gospel that jesus was baptized and went out into the wilderness to be tempted by satan which is another way of saying that jesus went out and wowed into the wilderness to do battle he was he was baptized in the jordan and he was anointed right he was anointed a priest prophet and king and what the job of kings was the job of kings was to go to battle on behalf of those who were in their kingdom which is to say that in the gospel today it'll be it'll be skipped over because it's so brief but what's happening is jesus is fighting for you he goes into the into the wilderness to fight for you and right now he steps into whatever wilderness you are in to fight for you so knowing that we have such an advocate such a warrior such the one who fights on our behalf we now come before him and his throne of mercy knowing that he is on our side and if god is for us who can be against us let us call upon his mercy now lord jesus you came to call sinners lord have mercy you came to seek and to save the lost christ have mercy you live to intercede for us at the right hand of the father lord have mercy may almighty god have mercy on us forgive us our sins and bring us to everlasting life let us pray grant almighty god through the yearly observance of holy lent that we may grow in understanding of the riches hidden in christ and by worthy conduct to pursue their effects through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit one god forever and ever i invite you to be seated as we hear from god's word [Music] a reading from the book of genesis god said to noah and to his sons with him see i am now establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you and with every living creature that was with you all the birds and the various tame and wild animals that were with you and came out of the ark i will establish my covenant with you that never again shall all bodily creatures be destroyed by the waters of a flood there shall not be another flood to devastate the earth god added this is the sign that i am giving for all ages to come of the covenant between me and you and every living creature with you i set my bow in the clouds to serve as a sign of the covenant between me and the earth when i bring clouds over the earth and the bow appears in the clouds i will recall the covenant i have made between me and you and all living beings so that the water shall never again become a flood to destroy all mortal beings the word of the lord [Music] your ways o lord are love and truth to those who keep your covenant your ways o lord our love and truth to those who keep your covenant your ways o lord make known to me teach me your paths guide me in your truth and teach me for you are god my savior your ways o lord are love and truth to those who keep your covenant remember that your compassion oh lord and your love are from of old in your kindness remember me because of your goodness oh lord in your ways o lord our love and truth to those who keep your covenant good and upright is the lord thus he shows sinners the way he guides the humble to justice and he teaches the humble his way your ways o lord our love and truth to those who keep your covenant a reading from the first letter of saint peter beloved christ suffered for sins once the righteous for the sake of the unrighteous that he might lead you to god put to death in the flesh he was brought to life in the spirit in it he also went to preach to the spirits in prison who had once been disobedient while god patiently waited in the days of noah during the building of the ark in which a few persons ate in all were saved through water this prefigured baptism which saves you now it is not a removal of dirt from the body but an appeal to god for a clear conscience through the resurrection of jesus christ who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of god with angels authorities and powers subject to him the word of the lord [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to mark chapter 1 verses 12-15 the spirit drove jesus out into the desert and he remained in the desert for 40 days tempted by satan he was among the wild beasts and the angels ministered to him after john had been arrested jesus came to galilee proclaiming the gospel of christ the gospel of god this is the time of fulfillment the kingdom of god is at hand repent and believe in the gospel the gospel of the lord let you have a seat so um i have this question like at the beginning of lent today you know the first day well first sunday of lent what would make this lent an incredible land like what would make this lent a great lent uh in the words of matthew kelly what would make this this uh lent the best lent ever uh i think there would be good things right we we fast we pray we almost gotta alms give because we want to be purifying our hearts that would be awesome to be able to at the end of this lent and 40 days to be able to have a more purified life that some of the devices that are in our lives they're gone that would be awesome that'd be great um or to become better prayers we spend more time in prayer that would be phenomenal that would be incredible or even if we you know gave alms and we grew in generosity all of those things would be really great i think all of those things would make this a really good lent but i think there's one thing that if in 40 days we grew in this it would make this lint unprecedented it would make it wouldn't just transform the next 40 days it would transform the next 40 years it would transform our eternity this one thing if in this lent we just focused on one thing this one thing would change absolutely everything but in order to know what that one thing is i think we'll go back to the first line not the very very first well let's go back to the people of israel wandering in the wilderness now we wander for 40 days right this lent is 40 days but the people of israel they wandered in the wilderness for 40 years and so i'll just call that kind of one of those primordial lens so let's give some context here's people of israel they've just been set free from slavery in egypt they've been slaves in egypt for over 400 years and they have to then spend 40 years in the wilderness big question why like why did they need to spend 40 years in the wilderness because that's going to give us a hint of why we just need to spend 40 days doing lent well because we know this we know that at one point god said okay the people is to the people of israel go up take the land of canaan take this is the promise then go up and take it i'll be with you and they went up and spotted out and they came back and they said um we can't there's too many they're too strong they're too big we can't do this and i imagine god's saying at this point yeah you're right i know that already you can't but i can it's like no we're too small and i imagine god going back over the story again and saying do you realize all that i've done for you do you realize that you were slaves again 400 years slaves under the most powerful nation on the planet at the time and i set you free not only by conquering their their gods by all the plagues and all these kind of things god's showing that he could do this without you know waving a finger but also i set you free from being slaves all you had to do was stand there eat a little bit of lamb and some unleavened bread and i took care of the rest and then you had to ask your neighbors the egyptian neighbors give us some of your jeweler give us some your gold and they gave you whatever you asked for and then you got to the red sea and it was you were stuck between the egyptian army and the red sea what did i do all you had to do was stand there and moses raised his staff i parted the waters like all these things here's god saying basically all you need to do in order to go to the promised land all you need in your hearts in order to be able to go up and take the land all you need for the rest of your life is one thing this is the one thing that i'm going to teach you over these next 40 days 40 years and that one thing is you can trust me that's the one thing that is the goal of lent that is the goal of the people wandering through the wilderness for 40 years is just to learn how to trust god imagine how different the rest of your life would be if your default again we talked about this on wednesday your default wasn't comfort your default wasn't ease your default wasn't escape but your default was god i trust you how much different would your prayer life look how much differently would your life life look if your default was god i trust you so what did god have to do with the people of israel i said okay we're going to go 40 years in the wilderness and during that time you'll have my presence you'll have my provision you'll have my protection during that time what's gonna happen is is you're gonna feel alone but i am with you during that time uh you're gonna be hungry and i will provide for you during that time you are going to be assaulted by others and i'm going to protect you all of these things is is just so powerful why because god is saying i'm being with you i'm going to feed you i'm going to i'm going to fight for you i'm going to lead you i'm going to guide you i'm going to guard you why so that you can learn this one thing at the end of these 40 years you can learn this one thing that changes everything you can trust me and so my invitation for all of us is that for flint for the next 40 days why do we pray why do we fast why do we give alms for that one purpose so we can trust god we we we pray we spend time with god so we can get to know him we fast we give up stuff so that we have a deeper sense of needing to rely upon him and we give alms so that we can become more like him again we pray as we get to know him we fast so we know that he can provide for us so we can trust him and then we give alms so knowing that we can have a heart like his because that's the great goal that is the great purpose of lent a heart that trusts god because i would say this that that this is the great wound of all of our hearts the great wound of all of our hearts is that we don't trust god that's why we started this series on ash wednesdays kind of continuing right now and it's to the heart because if we're going to get to the heart of lent we have to get to the heart of our wound the deepest heart of the deepest wound of our hearts is is not that we don't believe in god it's that we don't trust god in fact if you go back to the old testament go back to the third chapter of the very first book in the bible genesis chapter three what do you have you have adam and eve the first man and first woman and they're in relationship with god and what happens the serpent comes in and the serpent begins to attack their faith it begins to attack their trust and it's not he he begins to attack do you believe that god exists what does he say he says no can you trust him can you trust that when he said yes to you can say yes to it when he said no to you can say no to it's that attack on trust that has wounded every one of our hearts so when you and i approach god when we think about god even we think of the name god almost always our first response is i don't know if i can trust in fact the catechism says this it says it says here's the quote it says man tempted by the devil let his trust in his creator die in his heart that's what happened from the very first moment we let trust in our creator die in our heart goes on to say all subsequent sin would be disobedience toward god and a lack of trust in his goodness that every one of our sins comes from a lack of trust in his goodness and it comes back to the heart so in hebrew the biblical term heart is the hebrew word lev and what it ultimately means the catechism says this too it just goes back to the biblical source and says the heart is the hidden center of the person so we're talking about going getting to the heart we're talking about getting to the hidden center of any any one of us the place where we desire the place where we fear place where we experience joy the place where we make decisions in fact the catechism says the heart is the place of covenant it's the place of relationship and it's that relationship that is so full of distrust for so many of us so the big question i think is is if we have to get to the heart um how do you get to the heart and i think one of the ways we get to the heart is through stories i think i think our something about stories that just circumnavigates our brains and our obstacles and our objections and just gets to our hearts so i've been thinking a little bit lately about c.s lewis who wrote some of my favorite stories in fact um one of the series you probably know that c.s lewis wrote was the chronicles chronicles of narnia if you know this he wrote it for his goddaughter named lucy and at one point he he rec it's one of the four words he says that unfortunately lucy unfortunately you are growing faster than i can write these stories and so i fear that by the time i'm finished you will have outgrown them but i hope that you continue to grow long enough that you can come back to these stories and reread them and they can touch your heart so the stories um if you know the story this is gonna be review if you don't this is the spoiler so um here's chronicles narnia here's four children uh they're all they're all siblings and two girls two boys one is lucy like his goddaughter and they they go through this wardrobe and the line which in their wardrobe into this land that is encased in ice and snow it's called uh northern minnesota it's called narnia and um it's it's in case an isis know by this woman uh who's the white witch and she has cast a spell over the entire land and at one point this boy one of the boys his name's edmund he betrays his siblings and he betrays the king the li he's a lion his name is aslan and he betrays everybody and at one point then the story kind of crescendos with aslan the lion who's the jesus figure in the in the book he allows himself to be handed over he allows himself to be humiliated this incredibly powerful lion allows himself to be tortured he allows himself to be killed for edmond and to set to set this whole this whole land free and and obviously for us reading this you know knowing c.s lewis as a christian you can see that aslan is meant to be jesus in fact i i've talked to so many people who read the chronicles of narnia as kids and they had no connection they made no no connection between this is what the lion did for his these children and this is what jesus has done for us and yet even in the book at one point lucy has to leave and she says we have to go back to our our land our home but what we see there and aslan says this he says i am in your world but there i have another name and you must learn to know me by that name in fact this was the very reason why you were brought to narnia that by knowing me here for a little while you may know me better there and the idea is by seeing me here and hearing this story and living this you actually can trust in my love and lewis wrote that so that lucy could learn to trust in god's mercy you know that's that's such a such a challenge for so many of us right to trust in god's mercy to trust that he actually loves us in fact we talked about this i don't know maybe almost a year ago where the mercy of god is the most incredible love of god because god gives us his mercy the most when we deserve it the least that god gives us his mercy the most when we need it the most and all he's saying in that is he's just saying if you do this you know that you can actually trust me the great wound of our hearts is that we don't trust god and so he gives us his mercy in the deepest moment of our need because it's such a struggle for so many people to trust in the lord's mercy so lewis had to write a children's story in order to break past that i'm thinking still thinking of children's stories and i think about the first reading today the first reading today is know of the ark noah and the ark and for a lot of us if you grew up reading the bible or group having your parents read you the bible one of the first stories they read you was probably noah and the ark when you were a kid you probably listened to that story and said oh i love it noah's ark this is a great story there's there's a boat there's animals there's rain there's a rainbow it's awesome and then as an adult you say wait all those people got killed like it's one of those situations in fact we've been doing this bible in ear podcast and for the last time i'll not reference it again at least today um but so many people have emailed me or written letters to me and said oh my gosh i never realized so god destroyed the entire world with a flood that means everyone died right i'm kind of like yeah i guess that's what it means it's kind of like there was a there was a tv show back in the day that this husband and wife were talking about this and she was referring to star wars and at one point she said uh yeah no stormtroopers they're all robots right must kill will luke skywalker and uh he said no those those were those aren't robots they're people and she said oh my gosh all those people died when that big thing blew up the death star blew up and he and her husband looks at her and says honey they were working on the death star they knew what they were getting involved in which i thought was really funny but this is the reality the reality is that we are called to not only trust god's mercy but when we hear stories like the first reading from today we're also called to trust in god's justice i think god makes it very clear um that he's not like the ancient pagan gods right the ancient pagan gods uh like zeus and hera and poseidon and and hades and all those that they were powerful and they were immortal and they were at times beautiful and there were times very charming but they were also incredibly erratic and they were unpredictable and they were volatile what god is saying in the entire bible what god is saying is i am not erratic i am not unpredictable i'm not volatile what he's saying is i'm just that i am just and again that that justice can fear it can scare us can arise you know fear in our hearts and yet just after this story we're going to get to the story of abraham and at one point you know the story that abraham was looking out over the city of cities of sodom and gomorrah and god says i'm going to destroy those because of the wickedness of the people who live there and then abraham does this whole like you know auctioneer thing where he's like what about 50 50 people there no hold up 40 40 people 30 20. and god says if there are even if there's even one righteous person there i will not destroy it for the sake of the righteous person that god is establishing i am absolutely just i'm absolutely basically you can trust me for the sake of even one person i will not destroy it so the question is do we trust that like do we trust him do we trust even the fact that god needs to be just i think sometimes we don't like thinking about the reality that god is just but without justice god ceases to be good without justice god ceases to be good because without justice mercy is simply nothing more than permissiveness someone who's willing to look the other way which we're okay with when it's us who might be in trouble but we're definitely not okay with if there was a judge who was giving a ruling on someone who had hurt or killed one of your family members and they decided we're just going to look the other way would that be a good judge or a bad judge that would be an incredibly bad judge a good judge is one who always has to take into account justice and god doesn't cease to be just when he also reveals himself to be merciful because he's both because he's good and so even the story of the people people who died in noah the flood with noah it reminds us a number of things one is there's more to life than just this life that even if there was a person that was swept away by the flood who was righteous and just they would be vindicated as our lin our lens is too small our god is too small that's the crazy thing our god is too small we like a god who's tame like we're right we like a god who is who is safe and god isn't tame we're gonna get to the heart of god the heart of god is not tame the heart of god is not safe and i know it's still the objections come up like but what if the people in you know in genesis what if they just needed more time what if they just just give them another chance here's the reality if more time would have helped them god would have given them more time like so anyone in our lives but maybe they just needed another chance if another chance would have helped them we know this about the heart of god getting to the heart of god we know that god would have given them one more chance how do we know this because of the of the second reading today so in in first peter i mean actually even let's go to this second peter what does st peter say he says this he says he says that the lord does not delay his promise meaning he's not deland coming back some might consider delay but he's patient with you not wishing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance so god is patient with you meaning he's patient with me he's not wishing that anyone should perish but that all should come to repentance and if giving us another day would help he's going to give us another day giving us another shot would help he would give us another shot giving giving us another chance would help he would give us another chance and first peter the reading for today demonstrates that there is no length no depth to which jesus christ is not willing to go in the gospel he goes to the jordan river by the by the dead sea that is literally the lowest spot on the planet but in first peter peter describes that jesus doesn't stop there he dies and then it says he descended to hell essentially he descended to the place of sheol the abode of the dead why to preach to the souls there basically saying if anyone wants i mean there's this ancient sermon that talks about this jesus descending to hell where he's basically preaching and saying if anyone wants to come with me come with me there is no length to which jesus christ our god is not willing to go and so we can trust him what if at the end of this lent you trusted him what if at the end of this night you trusted that how much would it change everything you know i would say i would think this to the heart that doesn't trust no explanation is sufficient but to the heart that does trust no explanation is necessary and this is the last thing let's get to the heart of god today we read from after the flood here's something before the flood in genesis chapter 6 it says when the lord god saw all the brokenness he says the wickedness that was in the heart of human beings he says it grieved him to the heart when he saw the brokenness in you and in me it grieved him to the heart because god has chosen to love us so much that our choices matter to him he's chosen to love us so much that our choices matter to him and he's made his heart in a certain sense woundable because of how deeply he has taken us to his heart and what kind of heart an untamed and untamable heart when lucy and narnia was going to meet aslyn at one point uh she found out that he was a lion and she says wait uh ah i thought he was a man is he quite safe i shall feel rather nervous about meeting a lion and in response she gets safe who said anything about safe of course he isn't safe but he's good later on the line says the line is that aslan he comes and goes as he pleases because he's not a tame lion again but he's good and what we're called to do is we're called to get to the heart the heart of god is heart that is not safe that the heart of god is not tame and is not tameable but we can trust him because his heart is untamed and his heart is untamable but he is good i invite you to stand as we profess our faith i believe in one god the father the almighty maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and invisible i believe in one lord jesus christ the only begotten son of god born of the father before all ages god from god light from light true god from true god begotten not made consubstantial with the father through him all things were made for us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the holy spirit was incarnate of the virgin mary and became man for our sake he was crucified under pontius pilate he suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father he will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end i believe in the holy spirit the lord the giver of life who proceeds from the father and the son who with the father and the son is adored and glorified who has spoken through the prophets i believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church i confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and i look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come amen confident in the good confident in the goodness of god we now turn to him with our needs that the church may show the world the way to god through repentance and prayer we pray to the lord hear our prayer that world leaders may work saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended he took the chalice and once more giving thanks he gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith we proclaim your death o lord and profess your resurrection until you come again therefore oh lord as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your son his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven and as we look forward to his second coming we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice look we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you will to reconcile us into your soul to yourself grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your son and filled with this holy spirit may become one body one spirit in christ may he make of us an eternal offering to you so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect especially with the most blessed
