guys welcome back to this week's vlog which we're in the exact same place that we were last week thanks to that cat all right so you guys remember the last video that we did last week where we're out on the island getting the excavator off of the beach right well we got the excavator off the beach but in the process we ended up leaving another dead vehicle out there which you may have seen at the very tail end of the video rip [Music] uh the clutch went out and so hunter took one of our five-ton army trucks back out there to get the subaru picked up and in the process um he basically put on boys got the call commotion what happens so i'm just telling our viewers here so last week we saw the causeway right out here at the island we grabbed the excavator like right there walked it up got it off state lands states happy states happy are you proud of me yeah hey that's this is he doesn't believe you can see it so uh this guy right here is the guy who keeps us out of prison he also keeps us out of all sorts of other legal issues this is my attorney cole and yes we're going to do a super badass intro for him right [Music] now here's the deal excavator off the beach we're good state's happy the problem is in the process hunter brought his subaru up there and trying to get up the very last hill blew it up so he went out there to pick it up because obviously we didn't want to leave another vehicle out there he took the five ton well he put the subaru on the bed of the five ton and then on his way back got stuck well dave i got the subaru loaded up from the island but i got the five ton a little stuck that's the good side let me show you the bad side she sunk down to the axles i'm going to need you to come give me a tug but uh i guess i'll start my walk back across the sandbar seven miles here we go so basically he's like right in this bay right here which sucks because he's literally right on the lake bed which is where we just got the tractor off all right guys i'm going to zoom out may i yep all right so we got a couple challenges here the state is very protected with open lands what we're dealing with here is sensitive areas where bird migration happens where water levels are very sensitive to all the neighboring ecological issues so getting one five ton stuck is better than getting two five ton stuck but we wanna make sure we're not getting two five ton stock so we want to i think in this case ask for a little bit permission and be quick and be surgical about it get get it and get out it's not going to be easy but with your history with them i think we can get something done so basically what he's saying is we can do it and we're gonna go do it and this is why we have decent relationships with these agencies is because we used to just go do it but now we decided to grow up a little bit and do some of the paperwork we like to be able to cross this uh sandbar right here we had to get three different permits and three separate insurance policies just to be able to touch this because the problem is a bunch of people in throughout history have tried to drive off this this is a paved road right here that goes to the big island remember the analog island i told you about last week well this is paved and you can access it the problem is people see this sandbar and they're like oh cool off-road trail they drive on it and instantly get stuck it takes like specialty types of vehicles which obviously we have and even those get stuck sometimes which is what we're dealing with today so as of right now hunter is out there buried to his titties in just lake bed muck and he's tall he is tall yeah so what we're gonna do is i have a wrecker five ton basically with all sorts of winches and stuff on it we're gonna take that we're going to take old jackknife jim here are you coming are you staying good you can't do this out of there just can't be done 100 agree are you going like that yeah man does he ever or anything else okay is the truck ready yeah um listen so i have a fleet of army trucks this is what we call a five-ton uh army truck right this one is the recovery truck so it's got a winch in the rear winch in the front and the big boom winch this truck was designed for basically recovering other army equipment so m936 got the cummins engine in it six wheel drive this bad boy does a really good job at recovering stuck stuff the problem that we have is well the risk that we run is getting him stuck as well so basically we have to follow this path across the sandbar so perfectly and make sure that we don't hit any soft spots the problem is those soft spots are always constantly changing so you literally kind of drive by feel if you feel the truck start you know shifting or sinking a little bit curry and move over a little bit so a little bit of a risk going out there i'm not going to tell you this truck isn't going to get stuck because there's a good chance that it could get stuck luckily it's got double winches and a big winch up top and we got a bunch of recovery gear speaking of let me show you the recovery gear so as you can see we have another anytime we go anywhere to recover equipment or on a rescue mission i've learned that you can never have too many vehicles and tools so this is going to be one of our sport vehicles that's actually a giveaway truck we're giving away right now at work so well in fact i think i'm gonna give one away soon so stay tuned for that subscribers i found that anytime i go to a heavy recovery or getting something unstuck i always end up needing way more cables and ropes than i normally plan on so right here we have a bunch of 5 8 cables this is big heavy winch cable this stuff's rated at like i don't know anywhere between 50 and 250 000 pounds the different sizes i have here i've also got these big snatch blocks this is a small snatch block this is a bigger snatch block these are our best friends when we get really stuck because by using these we can literally double triple quadruple and so on our pulling power out of a winch so the situation gets really bad you're going to see a bunch of these coming out if you see a bunch of these coming out you're also going to be hearing a bunch of efforts coming out because it means [ __ ] got bad real quick so basically you got that we've got our big sling straps which we also use as recovery ropes so this stuff is going in here and then this whole crate goes in the back of one of the recovery rigs and then we head out to the site now one thing we're uh fighting right now is daylight we do not want to be doing this recovery at night so gonna hurry and get this stuff loaded get on the road and get out to the island because like i said night time on the island not only kind of eerie but it also makes getting stuff unstuck really really difficult so i also have one more secret weapon that i want to bring with us and it's not here right now it's over my other shop it's basically it's called the yankem rope it's like this thick and the company claims that literally you can just hook the rope from one stuck vehicle to another vehicle get a bunch of slack in it get a running start and just bonk full speed ahead and supposedly it'll get it unstuck without breaking which that's the first thing i want to try anyways i'll get this loaded up and we'll get on the road okay so uh like usual we just made kind of a last-minute change of plans here's what we're gonna do originally the plan was i was gonna drive in the five-ton with people dave uh cole and the guys were going in there and well we're just gonna change that up cole's probably gonna ride with me in the helicopter now because you need to do an aerial survey right yeah and then diesel dave will drive the five ton hands will drive the support vehicle and jackknife jim will ride with them as well so basically what that allows us to do is you see when you watch the island literally it's the bermuda triangle anything can happen out there you go out there and you never know if or when you're coming back having the helicopter greatly increases the odds of being able to get home before bedtime which is what all the wives want so like i said guys this is real it's raw this is what actually happens on a daily basis around here is it not made up this is not tv um you know creativity i'm not going to say tv's fake because it's reality tv but i'm just saying this is as real as a freaking gift so plan now load up the helicopter get these guys on the road and get hunters from food because poor dude has been out there all day and i think he had like a granola bar and a coke this morning and that was it hey why'd you put the hard stuff in the fridge welcome to the wild wild west [Music] all right so just landed out here in the helicopter about oh 30 minutes ago we got hunter some food and water got him calmed down uh diesel dave just showed up with jack knight jim big rig in the five-ton record now hands luckily showed up also with the so we use the polaris ranger basically for literally any type of support obviously you can see it's got like thousands of pounds of like cables and recovery gear in the bed this thing is the king out here because it's light enough to be able to walk around the sand no big deal and it doesn't get stuck very easily when i'm ready to escape i can that's why it's nice let me show you the issue i'm ready to go what when i am ready to escape i can't so you see these tracks right here right this is where we would normally just get onto the lake bed which is the sandbar easement that we have to be able to get back to mainland well we cruise along here everything's fine no big deal we do this path all the time but recently in the last couple of months the water levels out here have gone crazy we had a big storm that blew a bunch of water in and it kind of like re-saturated the ground so what used to be stable you can see kind of goes from like sandy kind of stable to a little spongy to bam just sunk now here's the thing about being sunk that may not look that sunk to you but it's basically now sitting on the axles the only reason it hasn't sunk further is because it's sitting on the axles so as we continue to work on getting it out you'll watch it just continue to sink more and more and more you also have to realize that that truck with the car on there weighs like 25 000 pounds roughly so hunter what do you have to say for yourself buddy you know tell the people tell them what you did well i successfully got the subaru loaded up so it was rescued but then as you see i probably got the five ton stuff why'd the subaru break were you driving responsibly okay that's what i thought listen what did you learn from this this is number three by the way this is stuck number three number three you're catching up the bud yeah you realize that this is uh strike number three this is strike three and you know sparks motors you get 47 strikes okay let me show you what we're dealing with the fun fact about the great salt lake lake bed is it looks dry on top but that's all it is it's just a little crust on top once you get down in here then you get into peanut butter bills which is uh this right here that right there is i bet you it's a hundred feet deep of that below us just pure crisco so jackknife jim and i know this all too well and the problem is once this stuff gets in your tires then you basically have a slick tire just a full smoothie it doesn't matter how aggressive your tires are in fact these are better tires because they're wider they're just they're called sand trails designed for military trucks in the sand they distribute the load a little bit better but i'm telling you right now this may not look that stuck to you but just to wait because this is how the excavator started remember the excavator this one that was sunk to the roof it literally started just like this but as soon as you start doing anything it just kind of starts like smashing the water down and the water comes up you basically smash the mud down water comes up vehicle sinks full-blown quicksand so since we're here we're going to take this as an opportunity to show some of the recovery techniques that we've learned over the years right number one we're going to try just basically doing the old snatch and pull with a big recovery rope this company claims that these ropes can like pull hundreds of thousands of pounds from like a dead like snap so that might work um if it doesn't then we're gonna have to rig up a snatch block and pulley system off of the winches of the recovery truck so gonna get interesting bro we're not the court room anymore look at this guy this is this is what i love about my journey you want the law father i want the law i want the law are you guys ready for the law father oh you're not ready for the water for him you get him gandalf ain't got [ __ ] on the wall father [Music] [Applause] recovering a stuck vehicle there's a million different ways you can do it the most common way is to take a rope or a chain and go from the recovery vehicle to the stuck vehicle and just tug now there's a couple different types of ropes right there's your regular old yellow tow rope from autozone that if you try to tug with slack in it it's going to break instantly then there's what's called kinetic ropes which is what this bad boy is this red rope right here is made by yankum ropes it's two and a half inches diameter it's rated about 201 thousand pounds and it's kinetic which means you can basically get it this close to itself and then just get a running start with a recovery vehicle and yank on it and just yank all the slack right out of it and there's enough energy in that rope that it absorbs it and then it kind of like bungees the stuck vehicle out now i have not used this brand of rope before so it might break it might not it might work i don't know the issue that we have is when you do this type of recovery you need like good solid ground for the recovery vehicle to be on which we don't really have if you see this it's a sandy beach so we're only going to give this one or two shots because the problem is once you do this it's really hard on the recovery vehicle and the recovery vehicle starts to spin this tires it'll sink then we got two stuck trucks and that my friend is a bad day we've been there so step one we're gonna give the old rope a test run here uh by pulling the subaru off the bed so that we can you know basically get as much weight off the truck as possible but you'll see that i've got the recovery rig here and not any further because this right here is where it starts to get real spongy and soft so i might come as far back to here but that's about it because if i come any further this bad boy is going to start to sink and like i said then we got a real problem on our hands because even though this truck has winches there's not even anything to anchor to so cross our fingers this works if this doesn't work then we're gonna go to the next recovery strategy which is using the winch system with cables and pulleys that's a lot more work a lot more effective but it's kind of a worse case scenario so test number one of this rope is we're gonna jerk the subaru off the bed of the five ton and we're gonna use the kinetic force of this rope to literally slingshot it off to see how much it puts up with if it yanks the super off no problem then we'll hook it to the army truck and then try another round but this should be interesting we're gonna get a running start just super's gonna [Applause] all right well if he worked for that granted super only weighs a couple thousand pounds so now doing it with a 20 000 pound military truck could be a little bit more interesting but here's the deal anytime you do a snatch recovery like this like pulling the slack out really fast it's a lot of stress on a lot of different components and something usually fails whether it be a shackle a d-ring which is some of these metal components the one of the ropes one of the hook points on the recovery vehicle there's so many different pieces right now to this puzzle that could potentially fail and usually believe it or not it's the metal like the chains chains fail before anything when it comes to recovery then well chains and ropes are kind of in the same category and then cables but then the kinetic rope is usually the last thing to fail but i'm not saying it's not breakable because it definitely is so basically what we're going to do is same thing we just did with subaru but now with the truck [Music] chained up ready to go that's ready to yank this thing out or what here's where things get interesting like i said once you start snatching vehicles this heavy this stuck either works or it goes really bad did that really just happen that was our first successful slingshot probably ever first try holy sh that doesn't happen tell you what that rope is impressive i didn't get me one of those dude that was how much that was probably a 15-foot running start right yeah yeah straight to dead weight yanked out look at this now look at this come here how's your whiplash let me show you this because you remember how i told you how it didn't look that bad well it's just soup it literally it's just it's just all soup so if we had to sit here and try to recover this thing any longer all that peanut butter mud was just coming straight up and the truck was going straight down i've never had an island recovery go that successfully that was what do we do what are we going to do now we just heard him go home as quick as we can what we're going to do here we're going to take that hook that took to that boom on that very record hook into his chain and hooked up the hunters pride and joy we're going to lift her up into the air and set her gently back onto that other five times so she can ride smoothly into the sunset back home like a pegasus of sort of like a pegasus of sorts smooth riding all the way into the sunset as far as the eye can see hunter's mullet just blowing gloriously in the in the wind that's what it is blowing gloriously in the wind well super ride safely on the back happy ending to the happy story [Music] a little wild as soon as we set the car down on the bed of the five ton there's no brakes no park brake no transmission to hold it so it started rolling off so i heard you had to pick it back up and it just made everything go freaking whiskey it was actually pretty smooth though i'm not gonna lie to you right now normally this type of recovery for us it turns into like a three or four day affair the fact that we're in and out of here in a couple of hours i'm not gonna lie i was i was kind of hoping that i had a little bit more to show you guys because normally like i said it gets it takes a lot of creativity to get out of some of these situations but the equipment function the way it's supposed to that big ass rope i'm really impressed like really impressed i've heard i've dealt with a lot of rope over the years and i've heard all sorts of these different manufacturers i've used their product and the product has failed me miserably that bad boy this is not a paid advertisement this is not a paid deal that yankum rope is the real deal i'm pumped on that i can't wait to see if i can break it i guarantee i will i just don't know how they've been trying to kill me for years he can't kill me i wish i had a video clip of all the times dave tried to kill me from the time he lifted me up in a bobcat and bashed my head on the bottom of a deck when we barrel rolled a snow cat off the top of farmington canyon we've had a lot of fun and he has not been able to kill me we'd have a pretty good show on it our first before dark recovery ever sun's down though if we normally we'll start a recovery at like before the sun even comes up in the morning and we are here well through the wee hours the next morning that's it for the recovery for the day right we got the vehicle unstuck but so yeah so here's the deal and i finally got my turn to get stuck yeah oh is this your first that's my first time this is how we do that oh you know what i should have i got enough of those uh we're stuck again but i just did a real sentimental rap out too walk off into the sunset said last trip on the island that's jk right is the most dave thing you'll ever see in the world he does not want the party to be over no and as you can see now our wrecker our recovery truck is buried and the thing is look at this we had been driving over this for years this was all this is tractor tracks like the lake bed and the water level is changing it's shifting and it always is and uh i was going one mile an hour right here we almost stopped and it broke through and just went you could just feel i was like we're gonna tip over i'm pretty sure it's still sinking yeah oh yeah it really is definitely quicksand so so now this is probably going to be even a more complex recovery than the last one am i mad no i'm actually kind of excited we're we're gonna use the old snatch block rope here and tug straight up hold on hunter i'm gonna go basically we're gonna go more at an angle i think we can just use the red rope okay i'm gonna stay up high and just tuck sideways i mean it started getting soft right here party's not over yet [Music] we thought we were safe it was super dry over here and then i just went and then just just sunk down i was in the helicopter i had some crazy idea that i might actually go home before sundown lo and behold here we are it's not murphy's law it's spark's law it must be this way there's no easy way there's no shortcuts it's this so here we go again all right so this is right here is where we almost always make all of our mistakes we get a frantic hurry to like get out of here or you know move on everybody's tired and this is where situations go from bad to like really bad so we're gonna take a second just like evaluate make sure everything's good that's why i moved the boom out over there basically trying to get some of the weight off this side of the truck for some reason when trucks sink out here they sink one side first and then all the way to the truck goes to that one side so they always you know go off kilter pad so we've got the big recovery rope hooked to the truck that we just recovered so now the recovered becomes the recovery it's a life lesson there is a life lesson now for sure what's the first thing you do reach down i hope this isn't a crap in the bucket situation crabs so here's the deal we're going to keep the the miracle rope another massive tug but this is you know i'll be honest this is stuff worse than it was over there because we don't have a straight shot pulling it out and it is already deeper it's sitting on the fuel tanks you might you're probably about to witness what actually happens when we do this what are you trying to say about the first thing we did well that was too easy this this is the fun part i actually live for moments like this but it also gets super frustrating hans is always the first to get super frustrated he starts stomping he don't stop he starts making he makes he starts blowing his right whistle it's weird that's why i brought the helicopter the rape whistle yeah sorry i brought it into it no no no you you brought the helicopter you made me ride in the ranger yeah but i brought the helicopter for ubereats again it's not easy this time but we'll get it [Music] [Music] um last time that happened we were here for four or five hours had the excavator had a bobcat tugging pushing pulling all digging dirt all we needed was this fancy yankem rope that is dude i'm never leaving i'm literally going to put that in my cargo pocket everywhere i go i'm never leaving home without that that was wild we got unstuck and then we got stuck again and then we got unstuck so hopefully we're not going to go for the third strike tonight because then everybody just gets frustrated so we're good both trucks are running all the recovery gear is good we didn't break anything yet so we're going to slowly tiptoe our way off this island because this is where things get weird this is when the ghost of jean baptiste comes out dave hey you seen jack no jim any sign of mr baptiste all right you guys ready for this as soon as the sun comes down jean-baptiste comes out yeah it's it's every night without fail out here so back in the 1800s long story short there was a grave robber in downtown salt lake city he was literally going to the graves digging up the bodies and taking their clothes and their jewelry so the authorities at the time said all right mr grave robbers jean baptiste we're going to banish you and they didn't send him to prison they sent him to fremont island which was known as disappointment island disappointment island mr john baptist out here all by himself and back then you couldn't walk across the lake because the lake was much higher so what happened they used to come out every month and bring them food well they came out to bring him food one time couldn't find him all they found was a slaughtered cow and basically some some remnants of like something that he tried to build so he either a built himself a raft and floated away or b something much more gruesome happened to him but they never saw or heard from him ever again see he's still here which is what we believe that mr bautista is still here i'm telling you at night time by yourself electronics stop working your lights usually go out there's just we we've actually fun fact never spent a night on the island yet we've spent nights working like two three four five in the morning but as far as sleeping on the island we have never slept on the island so it's terrifying it's a goosebumps story it's the worst kind of goosebumps story so we're trying to get the hell out of here who sleeps here tonight that's it for a big chapter of my life which was this island you know this island was a project that man i fell in love with this place years ago when i first came out here and i just had to have it and so i worked together with a couple of really cool partners we bought it and we had you know all sorts of different visions and goals for what we wanted to do out here and as we started to explore we found water we found you know different different ways to work out here but i'll tell you what what we're doing now by selling it and then having it donated back to the state it feels like the right move um just because it's it's it's still one of the very few pieces of the wild west that's just kind of left untouched and you know maybe that's there's a reason why we had issues with the water rights maybe there's a reason we had issues uh with access i will tell you this the state of utah davis county the different agencies that we worked with were super cool considering all the stuff that we wanted to do out here they were really flexible with us and ultimately you know gave me memories that me and my family are never gonna forget it's definitely gonna be the last time that i come out here but this is definitely but this is for sure probably the last time that i come out here you know uh in an ownership capacity meaning i've got vehicles i've got equipment out here so uh in picking up hunter's broken down subaru and pulling out that stuck army truck that's the last of the vehicles we had out here the last of the equipment and now as we leave tonight we're pretty much i mean if you look around we're leaving it just like this place was hundreds of years ago so i'm pretty proud of that i can definitely say that we left it probably a better place than we found it because we were able to find some of the wells uh improve some of the wells get the water pump and get the water flowing and uh definitely definitely cleaned up some of the stuff that the ranchers and stuff had had out here over the last you know 50 60 years and now it's just kind of paradise i mean look at this this nighttime out here golden hour out here there's nothing better so fremont island will always be a big part of my heart but i'm also super excited to move on to the next chapter which you guys are not going to believe some of the stuff i've got working on right now let me just tell you this the next project it will be bigger and better just like i always do
